Summary. Palaeomagnetic results are presented from the c . 160 km2 Caledonian synorogenic layered Fongen-Hyllingen gabbro complex (of probable late Silurian age) located about 75 km SE of Trondheim, Norway, in the allochthonous Seve-Kdli Nappe Complex. A total of 80 oriented samples from eight sites in the northern part of the gabbro were investigated. After detailed af demagnetization two stable high coercivity components emerge: one with a well defined NW direction with D =325°, I =−21° (α95=8°, N =8), and another, less well defined, probably younger, SW direction with D = 237°, I = 6° (α95= 9°, N = 8). Correction for dip of these two directions gives D = 329°, I =−7° (α95= 10°) and D = 238°, I =−11° (α95= 12°), respectively. The corresponding pole positions are P 1 : 19° N, 225° E and P 2: 19° S, 308° E, respectively. The reversed pole -P 2 of the SW direction lies close to other NW European palaeomagnetic poles of Caledonian, Upper Silurian-Lower Devonian age. However, the dominant pole PI is far away from these, and could be due to a late Caledonian geomagnetic excursion of considerable duration; or it could record a c . 90° rotation around a vertical axis of a crustal block within the Scandinavian Caledonides. Block rotation could have been related to nappe translation, although geological observations do not at present appear to support the occurrence of such an event.  相似文献

Measurement of samples from 154 sites in the continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line yielded six palaeomagnetic poles, at 243.6°E, 84.6°N, α 95 = 6.8°; 224.3°E, 81.2°N, α 95 = 8.4°; 176.1°E, 82.0°N, α 95 = 8.5°; 164.3°E, 86.4°N, α 95 = 3.4°; 169.4°E, 82.6°N, α 95 = 4.6° and 174.7°E, 72.8°N, α 95 = 9.5°, belonging to rocks which have been dated by the K–Ar method at 0.4–0.9  Ma, 2.6  Ma, 6.5–11  Ma, 12–17  Ma, 20–24  Ma and 28–31  Ma, respectively. The results are in general agreement with other palaeomagnetic poles from Oligocene to Recent formations in Africa.
  The first three poles for rocks formed between 0.4 and 11  Ma are not significantly different from the present geographical pole. Together with other African poles for the same period, this suggests that the African continent has moved very little relative to the pole since 11  Ma. The other three poles for rocks dated between 12 and 31  Ma are significantly different from the present geographical pole, showing a 5° polar deviation from the present pole in the Miocene and 13° in the Middle Oligocene.  相似文献

The tidal dynamics of the Irish and Celtic Seas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary. Current meter data collected over periods of more than 14 day from the Irish and Celtic Seas are harmonically analysed and presented in maps of tidal stream information. Making use of the analysed current data, and by constructing time series of frictional and inertial stresses which are also harmonically analysed, harmonic constituents of the surface tidal slopes at current meter stations are obtained. Using these with data collected from offshore tide gauges, and in conjunction with coastal tide data, cotidal maps are drawn with some confidence for M 2, S 2, O 1 and K 1, the M 2 chart resolving the discrepancy which exists between the different charts of the Celtic Sea already produced. Cotidal maps for M 3 and M 4 are also presented.
The mean over a tidal cycle of the energy flux for M 2, S 2 and O 1 is also presented in the form of the total energy flux in these constituents which crosses different sectional lines. A flux of 44 × 106 kW is observed to enter the Celtic Sea from the Atlantic and this is compared with previous estimates. An energy budget is also performed for M 2, including all the effects of astronomical forcing and Earth tides to enable comparison to be made between the true energy inflow and the estimated frictional dissipation. Finally, comparison is made between the mean of the instantaneous energy flux and the sum of the energy fluxes associated with the major harmonics.  相似文献

Summary. The statistical capability of the m b: M s discriminant for the discrimination of earthquake and explosion populations is examined by application of discriminant functions to a group of 83 explosions and 72 earthquakes in Eurasia. Equations are derived for the probability that an event is an earthquake or an explosion. The positive sign of DIS in the decision index equation, DIS i = 34.3383 – 11.9569 mb t + 7.1161 M si , indicates that the event i is an earthquake. Its negative sign indicates that event i is an explosion. The probability of correct classification for an event, P i , is related to its DIS i value, by P i = [1-exp (DIS i )]−1, where a large, positive DIS indicates a high probability that an event is an earthquake and a large, negative DIS indicates a high probability that an event is an explosion. The discrimination line M s = 1.680 m b– 4.825, or m b= 0.595 M s+ 2.872 very successfully separates the explosion population from the earthquake population. The points on this line have an equal chance of being an earthquake or an explosion; moreover, for any event, the distance parallel to the M s-axis from the point representing that event in the m b: M s plane to this line is a measure of the probability for the correct classification of that event.  相似文献

Summary. A method that enables the objective resolution of almost parallel multi-component magnetizations is described and demonstrated. A feature distinguishing this method from others is its simultaneous analysis of demagnetization data from a group of specimens, rather than the analysis of data from one specimen at a time. The only prerequisite is that the specimens are derived from a homogeneous source. Thus for a formation carrying a simple single component magnetization, all specimens from the formation may be simultaneously reduced. For a more complicated two component magnetization it is shown that only specimens from a particular site can be considered homogeneous, and for a complex three component system each sample often requires undivided attention. Thus the workload is proportionally increased to achieve analyses of comparable reliability from data of variable quality.
New pole positions from Mesozoic intrusions of the Sydney Basin, NSW are: from the Marsden Park Breccia pipe 48°S, 127°E ( A 95= 6°); the St Marys Breccia pipe 46°S, 150°E ( A 95= 8°); the Prospect Dolerite 60°S, 142°E ( A 95= 13°) and 53°S, 180°E ( A 95= 6°); and from the Dundas Breccia pipe 58°S, 162°E ( A 95= 36°) and 31°S, 195°E ( A 95= 16°). The last two formations possess multi-component magnetizations. These pole positions are consistent with previous results from south-eastern Australia.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption by rotifers Macrotrachela musculosa and Trichotria truncata from Spitsbergen tundra (77°N) was measured using the method of Cartesian divers. The metabolic rate of M. musculosa was: 0.205 10−3mm3 02 per g 10−6 per hour at 2°C, 0.201 10−6mm3 at 6°C and 0.616 10−3mm3 02 per g 10−6 per hour at 10°C. The metabolic rate of Trichotria truncata at 6° was 0.103 10−3mm3 per g 10−6 per hour. The relation between body weight and oxygen consumption by M. musculosa at 2°C is expressed with the equation R = 0.18W0.67, with R – oxygen consumption in mm310−3 per individual per hour and W – wet weight of an animal in g 10−6.  相似文献

We evaluate the seismic moment–frequency relation for the Harvard catalogue in the period 1977–1994. This catalogue is composed of about 12 000 earthquakes. After selection of events in terms of depth and energy, we retain about 8000 data points. We estimate two parameters of the seismic moment distribution: the power exponent β and the cut-off value M m . The method used is a least-squares linear fit on a log–log scale performed over a range selected on the basis of the standard deviation from the histogram. The analysis is carried out for different subdivisions of the Earth in square grids of different sizes. Neither parameter exhibits a dependence on cell size, suggesting the universality of their values and the interpretation of the existence of a cut-off as a finite size effect linked to a finite catalogue length. The variations of the parameters are investigated as a function of time (duration of the catalogue) and versus the number of events used for building up the distribution. Again, β and M m do not depend on time, but M m depends on the number of events, reaching a stable value for N ≈ 1000. The only significant change in the parameters is observed for different values of M 0upper in the catalogue, revealing the existence of universality classes.  相似文献

Rocks from the Massif de la Serre in the French Jura (latitude: 47.3°N longitude: 5.6°E) belonging to an ignimbritic assemblage dominated by vitrophyric rhyolites, and whose age of formation is probably Permian (Autunian to Saxonian) have been studied by applying thermal and alternating field demagnetization. the characteristic magnetization has a mean direction derived from 89 samples of D= 170°, I = - 16°, k = 26.2°, α95= 3° and a corresponding north palaeopole at 41°N, 172°E, A 95= 5°. the pole, which is very close to the Permian European poles, can thus be considered as a new contribution. Some samples are found to carry a unique normal polarity magnetization, others carry both normal and reverse polarities. It therefore seems that, similar to Permian series in the USSR, these west European rocks have registered a normal event in the Kiaman interval. From a structural point of view, we may conclude that during the Alpine tectonic phases the Massif de la Serre has not been subjected to substantial rotation.  相似文献

Coercive force of single crystals of magnetite at low temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The temperature dependence of coercive force H c was studied on well-characterized and stoichiometric millimetre-sized single crystals of magnetite at a series of 16 temperatures from 300 to 10 K using a SQUID magnetometer. H c decreases gradually with cooling to the isotropic temperature, T i = 130 K, where the first magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K 1 becomes zero. H c exhibits a sharp increase at the Verwey transition, T v = 120 K, where the structure changes from cubic to monoclinic. In crossing the Verwey transition, H c increases by more than two orders of magnitude, from 20 μT to 2.4 mT, and the shape of the hysteresis loops becomes wasp-waisted.
Observed coercivity between 300 K and 170 K varies with temperature as λ s / M s , where λ s is the magnetostriction constant and M s is the saturation magnetization, indicating that the coercivity in MD magnetite is controlled mainly by internal stress associated with dislocations or other crystal defects. It seems likely that the stable single-domain-like magnetic memory observed in large MD magnetite crystals is due to magnetoelastically pinned domain walls. The discontinuous change in H c at the Verwey transition is controlled by abrupt changes in magnetocrystalline and magnetostriction constants due to crystal deformation from cubic to monoclinic structure.  相似文献

Summary. In cases where directional data, such as palaeomagnetic directions, lie nearly along a great circle, a good approximation to the maximum likelihood estimate of the intermediate concentration parameter k 2 in the Bingham probability distribution is given by: 2( t 2/ N ) – 1 = I 1(1/2 k 2)/ I 0(1/2 k 2), where t 2 is the intermediate eigenvalue, N is the number of samples, and the Ii are the appropriate modified Bessel functions of the first kind. This estimate, the asymptotic limit as the smallest eigenvalue t 1→ 0, corresponds to restricting all points to lie on a great circle. The limit is also useful as an endpoint for interpolation, especially since numerical calculation in this region is difficult.  相似文献

Summary. The asymptotic properties of spheroidal mode dispersion at high frequency for fixed phase velocity are related to the intercept times τβ( p ) for P and S waves. If the mode eigenfrequency and the ratio of horizontal to vertical displacement at the surface for the mode are known τα( p ) and τβ( p ) may be separately estimated. If discontinuities exist in the velocity model then 'solotone' effects occur, in frequency at fixed slowness, and in τα( p ), τβ( p ) estimated from the mode dispersion as a function of slowness. The coupling of P and S waves in the spheroidal modes means that the interaction of P waves with upper-mantle discontinuities affects also the estimates of the S wave τβ( p ) values for which the corresponding turning points lie in the lower mantle. The asymptotic formalism also shows that sharp pulses formed by superposition of spheroidal modes correspond to multiple PS reflections.
A study of τα( p ), τβ( p ) estimates derived from spheroidal modes with periods from 45–50s, calculated for model 1066B, shows that even in the presence of strong upper-mantle discontinuities the errors in intercept time are only about one-tenth of a period. The asymptotic properties may there-for provide a useful means of estimating intercept times from modes with a few seconds period as a supplement to travel-time methods.  相似文献

Summary The single channel scalar deconvolution method presented by Oldenburg has been extended to include N channels of data and vector models of the form     ( t ) = ( m 1( t ), m 2( t ), …, m α( t ))T. The solution has its foundation in the linear inverse theory of Backus & Gilbert and is effected by computing a set of N filters, which, when convolved with the data, yield unique averages of one of the scalar functions of the model. Those averages are the summation of the scalar model convolved with a primary averaging function plus contamination from secondary averaging functions convolved with other model components. It is shown how a set of suitably selected weights can annihilate these secondary averaging functions and thereby greatly simplify the interpretation. The computations are efficiently carried out in the frequency domain and require the inversion of an N × N Hermitian matrix at each frequency. As a type example, we have shown how the time varying elements of a seismic moment tensor might be computed from a set of seismograms.  相似文献

New palaeomagnetic data from the Lower and Middle Cambrian sedimentary rocks of northern Siberia are presented. During stepwise thermal demagnetization the stable characteristic remanence (ChRM) directions have been isolated for three Cambrian formations. Both polarities have been observed, and mean ChRM directions (for normal polarity) are: Kessyusa Formation (Lower Cambrian) D = 145°, I = -40°, N = 12, α95= 12.8°; pole position: φ= 38°S, A = 165°E; Erkeket Formation (Lower Cambrian, stratigraphically highly) D = 152°, I = - 47°, N = 23, α95= 6.8°; pole position: φ= 45°S, A = 159°E; Yunkyulyabit-Yuryakh Formation (Middle Cambrian) D = 166°, I = - 33°, N = 38, α95= 4.6°; pole position: φ= 36°S, L = 140°E. These poles are in good agreement with the apparent polar wander path based on the bulk of existing Cambrian palaeomagnetic data from the Siberian platform. In Cambrian times, the Siberian platform probably occupied southerly latitudes stretching from about 35° to 0°, and was oriented 'reversely' with respect to its present position. Siberia moved northwards during the Cambrian by about 10° of latitude. This movement was accompanied by anticlockwise rotation of about 30°. The magnetostratigraphic results show the predominance of reversed polarity in the Early Cambrian and an approximately equal occurrence of both polarities in the part of the Middle Cambrian studied. These results are in good agreement with the palaeomagnetic polarity timescale for the Cambrian of the Siberian platform constructed previously by Khramov et al. (1987).  相似文献

The traveltime perturbation equations for the quasi-compressional and the two quasi-shear waves propagating in a factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media are derived. The concept of FAI media simplifies considerably these equations. In the FAI medium, the density normalized elastic parameters a ijkl ( X i ) can be described by the relation a ijkl ( X i) = f 2( x i ) A ijkl, where A ijkl are constants, independent of coordinates x i and f 2( x i) is a continuous smooth function of x i . The types of anisotropy ( A ijkl ) and inhomogeneity [ f ( x i)] are not restricted. The traveltime perturbations of individual seismic body waves ( q P , qS 1 and qS 2) propagating in the FAI medium depend, of course, both on the structural pertubations [δ f 2( x i)] and on the anisotropy perturbations (δ A ijkl ), but both these effects are fully separated. The perturbation equations for the time delay between the two qS -waves propagating in the FAI medium are simplified even more. If the unperturbed (background) medium is isotropic, the perturbation of the time delay does not depend on the structural perturbations (δ f 2( x i) at all. This striking result, valid of course only in the framework of first-order perturbation theory, will simplify considerably the interpretation of the time delay between the two split qS -waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. Summary. The Cordova gabbro of southern Ontario intrudes 1300 Myr old volcanic rocks of the Hastings Lowlands in the Grenville Structural Province. Three distinct vector magnetizations (A, B and C) have been isolated, using a combination of stable endpoints, subtracted vectors from orthogonal vector plots and converging remagnetization circles. The A magnetization, with mean direction D = 294° I =– 55.5° ( k = 42, α95= 5.5°, N = 18 sites), is a high coercivity, high blocking temperature remanence recorded by 49 samples. The B magnetization was isolated in 33 samples and has a mean direction D = 305.5° I =– 1.5° ( k = 24, α95, N = 11 sites). B has lower coercivities and blocking temperatures than A where the two are superimposed. The A and B palaeopoles, 151°E, 10.5°S ( dp = 6°, dm = 8°) and 165.5°E, 24°N ( dp = 5°, dm = 9.5°), fall on the Grenville Track around 900 and 820 Ma respectively. The A and B magnetizations thus date from uplift and cooling following the Grenvillian orogeny. The third magnetization, the C component, has been isolated in 23 samples. Its mean direction is D = 180° I = 27.5° ( k = 18, α95= 10.5°, N = 12 sites). The C is a low coercivity, low blocking temperature overprint of A and B. Its palaeopole, 102°E, 31°N ( dp = 6.5°, dm = 12°), is unlike post-1300 Precambrian poles for cratonic North America but matches Silurian and late Ordovician poles. 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 446 and 447 Ma determined by Lopez-Martinez and York for plagioclases from one of the Cordova samples confirm this age assignment. The C magnetization therefore records a previously unrecognized mild thermal or hydrothermal event that occurred in Palaeozoic time, long after the Grenvillian orogeny.  相似文献

Summary. One hundred and fifty oriented samples were collected from 12 sites from the Tertiary basalts of Wadi Abu Tereifiya (30.0°N, 32.1° E). After alternating field demagnetization the mean direction of the natural remanent magnetization is, D = 187.9°, I = -20.8° with α95= 5.8°. This yields a palaeopole at 69.4°N, 188.3° E.
Also, 30 oriented samples were collected from two sites from Mandisha in Bahariya Oasis (28.4°N, 28.9° E). After cleaning, the mean direction of the NRM is D = 191.0°, I = 5.2° with α95= 9.9°. This yields a palaeopole position at 58.2°N, 186.7° E.
Besides, the NRM of 70 oriented samples collected from seven dioritic dykes from Wadi Abu Shihat (26.3°N, 33.2° E) was found to have a mean direction, D = 142.0°, I = -0.3°, which leads to a palaeopole position at, 44.9°N, 273.0° E. This agrees with other Mesozoic pole positions from Africa.  相似文献

A method based on the coda attenuation law: Q = Q 0( f/f 0)v leads to the determination of the lateral variation of coda- Q in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula using seismograms belonging to the seismological network of the Cartuja Observatory, located in Granada. The lateral variation of Q 0 ( Q value corresponding to a reference frequency f 0 of 1 Hz) and its frequency dependence for the 1 to 5 Hz frequency range are, in general, in agreement with coda- Q values for frequencies less than about 1 Hz, previously determined in the region under study.
To determine the coda- Q values analytical functions have been used to fit the magnification curves of the vertical component short-period seismographs belonging to the Cartuja network. The problem is solved by using least-squares techniques and non-linear inversion. The determined coda- Q 0 values and its frequency dependence correlate well with several known geophysical parameters in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

Summary. Fifty-six orientated samples were collected from 13 sites on five dolerite dykes (between lat.14°23°N, long.77°43'E and lat.14°08'N, long. 77°49'E), which adjoin the south-western margin of the Cuddapah basin in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. After af demagnetization, two dykes (five sites) striking ENE possess similar magnetic directions, (1) D = 57°, 1=-69° (K = 52, α95= 7°) and (2) D = 71°, I = -72° ( K = 260, α95= 5°). Again dykes (3) (three sites), and (4) (two sites) have similar strike (NE) and magnetic directions, D = 64°. I=-7 α( K = 142, α95 = 8°) and D = 53°, I =-8° (K = 142, α95= 6°) and dyke (5) (two sites) striking NW shows D = 320°, I = -34° ( K = 68, α95= 13°). Remanent directions estimated from total field magnetic anomaly data agree well with these results. Synthesis of these data with 10 other published palaeomagnetic studies of Precambrian dolerite dykes on the Indian peninsula, suggest that these three systems of dykes adjoining the Cuddapah basin had been emplaced prior to the basin formation perhaps representing the initial thermal event responsible for the basin development and also that there have been at least three separate periods of dyke emplacement on this shield. The radiometric data, however, are very sparse and these periods cannot be dated with confidence.  相似文献

Upper Jurassic red sandstones and red siltstones were collected from 67 layers at 12 localities in the Penglaizhen formation. This formation is in the north of Bazhong county (31.8°N, 106.7°E) in the Sichuan basin, which is located in the northern part of the Yangtze craton. Thermal demagnetization isolated a high-temperature magnetic component with a maximum unblocking temperature of about 690 °C from 45 layers. The primary nature of the magnetization acquisition is ascertained through the presence of magnetostratigraphic sequences with normal and reversed polarities, as well as positive fold and reversal tests at the 95 per cent confidence level. The tilt-corrected mean direction of 36 layers is D = 20.0°, I = 28.8° with α 95 = 5.8°. A Late Jurassic palaeomagentic pole at 64.7°N, 236.0°E with A 95 = 7.0° is calculated from the palaeomagnetic directions of 11 localities. This pole position agrees with the two other Late Jurassic poles from the northern part of the Yangtze craton. A characteristic Late Jurassic pole is calculated from the three poles (68.6°N, 236.0°E with A 95 = 8.0°) for the northern part of the Yangtze craton. This pole position is significantly different from that for the southern part of the Yangtze craton. This suggests that the southern part of the Yangtze craton was subjected to southward extrusion by 1700 ± 1000  km with respect to the northern part. Intracraton deformation occurred within the Yangtze craton.  相似文献
