At present, there is growing interest in using low cost, commercially available materials for the adsorption of heavy metals. The major advantages of adsorption technologies are its effectiveness in reducing the concentration of heavy metal ions to very low levels and the use of inexpensive adsorbent materials. In this review, agricultural and forest waste adsorbents were used to remove Pb2+ ions in wastewater treatment, and their technical feasibilities were reviewed in studies mainly from 2000 to 2010. They all were compared with each other by metal binding capacities, metal removal performances, sorbent dose, optimum pH, temperature, initial concentration and contact time. Although commercial activated carbon is widely used in wastewater treatment applications, it has high costs. The use of agricultural by-products as adsorbent material to purify heavy metal contaminated water has become increasingly popular through the past decade because they are less expensive, biodegradable, abundant and efficient. Instead of activated carbon, this study was focused on the inexpensive materials such as agricultural and forest waste. It was shown that these alternative adsorbents had sufficient binding capacity to remove Pb2+ ions from wastewater.  相似文献

In the present research, the removal of lead(II) and copper(II) from aqueous solutions is studied, using SnO2 nanowires as new adsorbent on solid-phase extraction disk and compared with pine core and buttonwood as biosorbents. Batch adsorption experiments were performed as a function of pH, adsorption time, solute concentration and adsorbent dose for biosorbents. Also, the pH, transfer rate of solution and metal concentration were selected as experimental parameters for the removal of heavy metals by SnO2 nanowires. All of the parameters were optimized by experimental design method for sorbents. The experimental equilibrium adsorption data are tested for the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Results indicate the following order to fit the isotherms: Langmuir > Freundlich, in case of lead and copper ions. The removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was performed by selected sorbents in the presence of interferences ions. This led to no remarkable decrease in the removal efficiency of SnO2 nanowires. Using the SnO2 nanowires in the wastewater treatment indicated 96.8 and 85.28% removal efficiency in only 7 min for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. SnO2 nanowires were found as reusable sorbent. Therefore, SnO2 nanowires have a good potential for application in environmental protection.  相似文献

This research work explores the potential of modified agricultural waste for the sorption of quinoline from aqueous media. A quinoline removal efficiency of around 97 % and sorption capacities of ~20 (batch) and ~35 mg g?1 (fixed-bed) were achieved. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Temkin isotherm best represented the equilibrium sorption data. The sorption of quinoline is exothermic and spontaneous in nature with a slight increase in the system entropy. The quinoline sorption mechanism is controlled by H-bonding, π–π dispersive interactions, boundary layer, and intraparticle diffusion. Microwave–chemical integrated regeneration technique retrieves the sorption capacity of the exhausted sorbent with 99.15, 97.64, and 95.55 % of the original, in three sorption–regeneration cycles. Energy recovery (19.365 MJ kg?1) from the quinoline-loaded sorbent and the potential utilization of left-over ash materials enhanced the prospective of the sorbent for the remediation of pollutants for a clean and green environment.  相似文献

This study focuses on the performance of nanostructured banana peels in lanthanide-laden mine water treatment. Specifically, nanostructure formation via mechanical milling, characterization in detail and application of this sorbent media in rare earth elements (REEs) removal from synthetic and real mine water are thoroughly investigated. The sorbent samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared analyses, while the amount of REEs adsorbed was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Results revealed that the particle and crystallite sizes were reduced from <65,000 to <25 nm and 108 to 12 nm, respectively, as the milling progressed. Furthermore, the fracture of particles resulted in a surface area increment from 1.07 to 4.55 m2 g?1. Through Fourier transform infrared analysis, the functional groups responsible for the coordination and removal of metal ions were found to be carboxylic group (at absorption bands of 1730 cm?1) and amine groups (889 cm?1). The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity was 47.8 mg g?1 for lanthanum and 52.6 mg g?1 for gadolinium. Meanwhile, results revealed that banana peels have a high affinity for Sm, Eu, Nd, Pr, Gd, Tb and Lu compared to other lanthanides present in the mine water samples. The results obtained so far indicate that nanostructured banana peel is a potential adsorbent for REEs removal from mine water. However, for any application, the water matrix to be treated substantially influences the choice of the sorbent material.  相似文献

Due to its harmful impact on human health, the presence of heavy metals, metalloids and other toxic pollutants in drinking or irrigation water is a major concern. Recent studies have proved that nanosized adsorbents are significantly more effective than their microsized counterparts. Particular attention has been given to nanocomposites with nanoadsorbents embedded in matrixes that could provide stability to the material and contribute to eliminating problems that may appear when using conventional granular systems. This study presents the preparation of a novel hybrid filter from a commercially available polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric matrix modified with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and iron oxy(hydroxide) nanoparticles, and its use in the removal of As(III). A Box–Behnken statistical experimental design has been chosen to explore relevant variables affecting the filter performance: (1) As(III) concentration, (2) pH and (3) sorbent dose. From an As(III) concentration of 10 mg L?1, at pH 6.5 and with a sorbent dose of 5 g L?1, the PP filter modified with MWCNT removes 10% of the initial metalloid concentration, reaching a capacity of 0.27 mg g?1. After modification with iron oxy(hydroxide), the performance of the material is largely enhanced. The filter, under the same conditions, removes 90% of the initial As(III) concentration, reaching a capacity almost tenfold higher (2.54 mg g?1). This work demonstrates that the developed hybrid filter is effective toward the removal of As(III) in a wide range of pHs. A cubic regression model to compute the removal of the filter as a function of pH and sorbent dose is provided.  相似文献

This study presents the results of chromate adsorption upon organically modified clinoptilolite obtained by the treatment of Bigadic clinoptilolite with surfactants in primary amine structure, namely 1-dodecylamine, 1-hexadecylamine and oleylamine. Natural and organo-clinoptilolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry which proved the integration of amine groups followed by the order oleylamine > 1-hexadecylamine > 1-dodecylamine. Organo-clinoptilolites were tested for their efficacy in chromate removal under base case conditions which implied 100 ppm initial concentration, pH 4.0, 10 g l?1 adsorbent dose and at 298 K. Results showed that amine loading induced chromate removal reaching up to 90 % for oleylamine-modified clinoptilolite. Experimentation was continued to determine the effects of pH, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration on chromate adsorption. Accordingly, maximum removal of 94.0 % was attained with 14 g l?1 of oleylamine-modified clinoptilolite, from Cr(VI) solution of 100 ppm initially at pH 3.0. Langmuir isotherm described the adsorption of chromate on oleylamine-modified clinoptilolite with 96.4 % consistency. Maximum theoretical uptake capacity was calculated as 6.72 mg g?1. Kinetic data were consistent with pseudo-second-order model with the controlling steps being film and pore diffusions.  相似文献

Heavy metal ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) were biosorbed by brown seaweed (Hizikia fusiformis), which was collected from Jeju Island of South Korea. The metal adsorption capacity of H. fusiformis improved significantly by washing with water or by base or acid treatments. The maximum sorption by NaOH-pretreated biomass was observed near a slightly acidic pH (pH 4?6) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+. This result suggests that the treatment of H. fusiformis biomass with NaOH helped increase the functional forms of carboxylate ester units. Kinetic data showed that the biosorption occurred rapidly during the first 60 min, and most of the heavy metals were bound to the seaweed within 180 min. The maximum metal adsorption capacities assumed by a Langmuir model were on the order of Pb2+ > Cd2+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+. Equilibrium adsorption data for the heavy metal ions could fit well in the Langmuir model with regression coefficients R 2 > 0.97.  相似文献

The chemistry of the rainwater indirectly reflects the composition of the ions in the atmosphere. The study of the rainwater gains its own importance as it forms the basis for the agricultural, domestic and drinking water. Twelve rainwater samples were collected along the southeastern coast of India during southwest monsoon. The samples were analyzed for the major anions (Cl?, SO4 2?, PO4 3? and HCO3 ?) and cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+). The majority of the samples reflect acidic pH. The general dominance of the cations is in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > K+ > Mg2+ and that of anions is HCO3 ? > Cl? > SO4 2? > PO4 3?. The water is classified as calcium bicarbonate to sodium bicarbonate type. The decrease of pH value also increases the pCO2. In order to study the impact of acidic and alkaline species on rainwater, correlation coefficients were determined for establishing the relationship between different ions. Good correlation was established between cations, and sulfate has no correlation with other ions and pH. Factor analysis reveals that land use pattern, marine source and methanogenesis from the tidal influenced mangroves play a major role in determining the rainwater chemistry of the region.  相似文献

Ruppia maritima and Echinodorus amazonicus were prepared in a dehydrated powder form. The characteristics and mechanisms of adsorption of heavy metals were studied under various pH values, reaction times, and heavy metal ion concentrations. The results showed that under different pH and reaction time conditions, heavy metal adsorption was lead > cadmium > zinc > copper. The adsorption of lead increased linearly with the lead concentration. For cadmium, zinc and copper, the adsorption was saturated when metal ion concentration exceeded 200 mg/L. When a Freundlich model was applied, R 2 values for the heavy metal adsorption by the aquatic plants mostly exceeded 0.9. The adsorption of heavy metal ions by these two aquatic plant powders was better explained by the Lagergren second-order equation than the first-order equation. From the Fourier Transform Infrared spectra, there was an adsorption peak at 2,115 cm?1 for R. maritima. The peak shape did not change with metal affiliation except there was a shift of peak wavelength before adsorption. The results indicate that the mechanism of heavy metal adsorption by the two species is not simply on the mono-molecular layer level, and that intra-particulate dispersal is the dominant process. Heavy metal pollution does not affect the basic chemical components, and major substances involved in heavy metal adsorption including carbohydrates, cell wall pectin, and protein functional groups.  相似文献

Landfill leachate is a high-strength wastewater. If it is not managed properly, it can pollute surrounding environment. The aim of this study is to determine the simultaneous adsorption capacity of iron oxide-coated gravel for metals such as Cd(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in high-strength leachate sample. Different operating conditions such as pH, time, and dosages were investigated to determine the kinetics and mechanism of adsorption process. Coating with iron oxide changed the external surface of gravel. The adsorption capacities increased with increased pH, and the optimum pH was found to be 7. High removal rates were observed in a short period of time. The Freundlich model fitted reasonably well to the experimental data, indicating multilayer adsorption process and the heterogeneity of the surface (R 2 ranging 0.57–0.94). The Temkin model fitted well to the experimental data as well (R 2 ranging 0.67–0.98), indicating that the adsorption is an exothermic process. The adsorption of ions was found to obey second-order kinetics, indicating one-step, surface-only adsorption process. The degree of metal adsorption on iron oxide-coated gravel at pH 7 was in the order Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Fe(II) > Zn(II) > Ni(II).  相似文献

Groundwater is an important water source for agricultural irrigation in Penyang County. Some traditional methods such as irrigation coefficient, sodium adsorption ratio, total alkalinity, total salinity and total dissolved solids were employed to assess groundwater quality in this area. In addition, an improved technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution model was applied for comprehensive assessment. The origin of major ions and groundwater hydrogeochemical evolution was also discussed. Groundwater in Penyang County contains relative concentrations of dominant constituents in the following order: Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ for cations and HCO3 ? > SO4 2? > Cl? > CO3 2? for anions. Groundwater quality is largely excellent and/or good, suggesting general suitability for agricultural use. Calcite and dolomite are found saturated in groundwater and thus tend to precipitate out, while halite, fluorite and gypsum are unsaturated and will dissolve into groundwater during flow. Groundwater in the study area is weathering-dominated, and mineral weathering (carbonate and silicate minerals) and ion exchange are the most important factors controlling groundwater chemistry.  相似文献

This study was carried out to determine the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn) in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) produced from the co-processing with hazardous waste in comparison with OPC produced using natural raw materials. The results showed that the concentration of heavy metals in cement produced from natural raw material was in the order of Zn > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cu > Cd. Zn and Cd were the highest and the lowest concentrations, respectively, in cements produced from the co-processing activity. The difference between heavy metals concentrations in OPC produced with and without co-processing was found to be statistically significant. The concentration of heavy metals in the cement produced is generally factory dependent. The human risk assessment associated with the heavy metals for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks has been evaluated. The calculated hazard index (HI) and total lifetime cancer risks (LCR) were lower than the acceptable threshold reference values, HI < 1 and LCR < 1 × 10?4, respectively. Thus, it is anticipated that there is no potential of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for both adult and children. However, the findings indicated that there is a need for regulatory monitoring. The exposure pathway for both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks are both in the order of ingestion > dermal > inhalation.  相似文献

Deepawali is one of the main festivals for Hindu religion which falls in the period October–November every year with great fireworks display. In this study, we investigated the levels of water soluble ions and heavy metals—during the fireworks festival in Rajnandgaon, Central India. The chemical compositions and noise level distributions are reported from the sampling site. First time during Deepawali, air quality was studied in this area, The Aerosol samples of PM10 (particle aerodynamic diameter <10 μm) are collected in October 24–28, 2011. Aims of the present studies are (1) To describe the particulate concentrations and associated chemical species during Deepawali festival, (2) To recognize the noise level in Deepawali festival. For study, the samples were collected in glass fiber filter paper and analyzed for the major water soluble ions F?, Cl?, NO3 ?, SO4 2?, Na2+, NH4 +, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ employing ion chromatograph. Concentration of heavy metals was analyzed by ICP-MS and was observed to occur in order Fe > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. The result revels that all concentration are above the permissible limit fixed by CPCB, USPEA, and WHO standard. It is concluded that the burning of fireworks during Deepawali festival was the main source of heavy metals and ion.  相似文献

The experimental conditions for preparation of pomegranate peel carbon and Fe(III) modified pomegranate peel carbon were studied. The effects of main experimental parameters on carbon preparation such as carbonization time, carbonization temperature and Fe(III) impregnation ratio in pomegranate peel were investigated. The prepared carbons in various conditions were characterized by consideration of the production yield, ash content, iodine number, pH of zero point charge and their ability for adsorption of methylene blue. After preparation of carbons, their efficiency for removal of Cd2+ species from aqueous solution was investigated. The effect of experimental parameters such as Cd2+ initial concentration, pH of solution and contact time was studied by batch adsorption experiments. The fitting of experimental data in thermodynamic isotherms matched the linear results with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption capacity for Cd2+ species on Fe(III) modified pomegranate peel carbon was 22.72 mg/g and the adsorption kinetic presented the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.  相似文献

Major ions and important trace elements in addition to δ18O and δ2H were analysed for 43 groundwater samples sampled from the Al-Batin alluvial fan aquifer, South Iraq. The most dominant ions (with respect to molarity) were: Na+ > Cl? > SO4 2? > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > NO3 ? > HCO3 ?, with total dissolved solids (TDS) averaging 7855 mg/L. High concentrations were found for the trace elements U, Mo, V, B, Sr, and Cr. This study suggests a hydraulic connection exists near the fan apex between the uppermost part of the Al-Batin aquifer and the underlying Dammam aquifer by means of the Abu-Jir fault system. Except for the effects of extensive irrigation, fertilizer use, and poorly maintained sewers, the groundwater chemistry is mainly controlled by geological processes such as dissolution of evaporites and the enrichment of dissolved ions as a result of the high evaporation and low recharge rate. Furthermore, it is shown that the Kuwaiti fuel–oil burning during Gulf War in 1991 contributed to the enrichment of V and Mo in the studied aquifer. The spatial distribution of most ions appears to generally increase from the south-west towards the north-east, in the direction of groundwater flow. The stable isotopes show heavier values in groundwater with a gradually increasing trend in the direction of groundwater flow due to the decreasing depth to groundwater and thus increasing of evaporation from both groundwater or irrigation return water. Additionally, the stable isotope signature suggests that rainfall from sources in the Arabian Gulf and the Arabian Sea is the major source of recharge for the Al-Batin aquifer. Except for two samples of groundwater, all samples were not suitable for potable use according to the WHO standards. Most of the groundwater is suitable for some agricultural purpose and for livestock water supply. Apart from the high salinity, boron represents the most critical element in the groundwater with respect to agricultural purposes.  相似文献

In recent years, the need for safe and economical methods to eliminate heavy metals from contaminated waters has necessitated research on the production of low-cost alternatives to commercially available activated carbon. In the present work, in order to enhance the removal of heavy metals from contaminated water, Zizyphus vulgaris wastes were modified chemically to produce an adsorbent rich in carboxylic groups to enhance the removal of heavy metals from contaminated water. Adsorption of Zn(II) ions on the produced adsorbent was then optimized. The optimal ratio for esterification involved the treatment of Z. vulgaris wastes (1 g) with 0.0037 mmol malic acid in the presence of a very small amount of water for 2 h at 140 °C. The maximum values for adsorption capacity, q max, were 28.7 and 164.6 mg/g on native and modified Z. vulgaris wastes, respectively, at pH 5 and 30 °C with a contact time 2 h and an initial metal ion concentration of 400 mg/L. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models and demonstrated the significant capacity for Z. vulgaris wastes in the removal of Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

This paper assesses the use of certified Iraqi montmorillonite clay as a potential sorbent for the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous solutions. The clay is characterized by a cation exchange capacity of 0.756 meq g?1 and a zero point charge at pH 8.7. Aqueous solutions of OTC were equilibrated with montmorillonite under various experimental conditions, such as OTC concentration, pH and clay content, for 24 h at fixed ionic strength. Two forms of montmorillonite were evaluated: regular and iron-modified form. The effect of pH was minor on OTC adsorption. Kinetic study revealed that the sorption follows a pseudo-second-order model. Sorption isotherm showed a good fit with the Freundlich model. OTC sorption onto Fe-saturated montmorillonite was analyzed statistically using a response surface design to study the effects of experimental conditions. The introduction of iron improved the adsorption characteristics of the clay due to the ability of ferric ions to make stable complexes with OTC. The most favorable operating conditions for the treatment were deemed as follows: clay content, 6.85 g L?1, oxytetracycline concentration, 1.0 mmol L?1 and pH, 5.5 for the iron-modified form.  相似文献

The objective of the present study is to evaluate the absorption efficacy of H. fusiformis biochar (HFB) for the removal of phenol and heavy metals from single and mixed solute systems of these species under different experimental conditions. The effects of contact time, pH change, initial phenol concentration, and heavy metal concentration on the adsorption capacity of HFB were investigated. The kinetics and equilibrium models of sorption of the components of the single and mixed solute systems on HFB were also studied. The experimental data were fitted to kinetic and equilibrium models. The batch experiments revealed that 360 min of contact time was sufficient to achieve equilibrium for the adsorption of both phenol and heavy metals. The adsorption of phenol and nickel by HFB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which was quite adequate for describing the adsorption mechanism. The equilibrium data for the adsorption of phenol and heavy metals fit well to the Langmuir model with regression coefficients of R 2 > 0.819. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities were 10.39, 12.13, 22.25, 2.24, 2.89, and 22.03 mg/g for phenol, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+, respectively. Moreover, HFB exhibited optimal sorption under slightly acidic conditions at pH 6. The HFB used in the present study exhibited higher adsorption capacity for the removal of phenol and heavy metals from aqueous solutions compared to documented sorbents. These results demonstrate that HFB is potentially useful for alleviating the harmful effects of phenol and heavy metal in wastewater treatment systems.  相似文献

Soil pollution in agricultural areas surrounding big cities is a major environmental problem. Tabriz is the largest city in the northwest of Iran and the fourth largest city in the country. Soil samples were taken from 46 sites in the suburbs of the Tabriz city, and separate samples were taken from control site and analyzed. The results indicated that the mean pH value of the soil samples was 9.29, while the mean EC value was 354.33 μs/cm and the amount of TOC and TOM was 0.99 and 1.7 %, respectively. The mean concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Zn in the soil were determined to be 1.61, 10.56, 101.25, 87.40, 38.73, and 98.27 mg/kg, respectively (dry weight). The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Zn), with the exception of Ni, were higher than the concentrations of the same heavy metals at the control site. Despite these elevated concentrations, the concentrations of heavy metals were lower than the toxicity threshold limit of agricultural soils. The values of the pollution index revealed that the metal pollution level was Pb > Cr > Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni, and the mean value of the integrated pollution index was determined to be 1.81, indicating moderate pollution. Nevertheless, there were some sites that were severely polluted by Cr (maximum values of 1,364 mg/kg). It was concluded that city probably has affected the surrounding agricultural area. Application of wastewater (municipal and industrial) as irrigation water, using of sludge as soil fertilizer, and atmospheric perceptions have been considered as main reasons of increased heavy metals concentrations found in the studied area.  相似文献

The adsorption behaviors of ammonium from aqueous solutions were investigated for three solid coal wastes, slag, honeycomb-cinder and coal gangue. The ammonium sorption processes were well modeled by the pseudo second-order model (R 2 > 0.99). The experimental data were fitted to both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model, with the Langmuir model better representing the data. The maximum ammonium sorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir model were 3.1, 5.0 and 6.0 mg/g for the slag, honeycomb-cinder and coal gangue samples, respectively. The pH value of the solution affected the ammonium removal, and the higher uptakes found in either neutral or alkaline conditions for the three materials. The thermodynamic parameters, ΔH, were calculated to be 29.75, 25.21 and 17.91 kJ/mol for the SL, HC and CG samples, respectively, with the positive values indicating that the ammonium sorption processes were endothermic. Based on the results, it can be concluded that coal gangue may have more potential for being used as a sorbent for the ammonium removal from wastewater among the three coal by-products.  相似文献
