The lipid biomarkers of hopanoids in cold seep carbonates from the South China Sea continental slope were investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer (GC–MS) and gas chromatography-isotope ratio-mass spectrometer (GC-ir-MS). The distribution of hopanes/hopenes shows a preference for the ‘biological’ 17β(H), 21β(H)-over the ‘geological’ 17α(H), 21β(H)-configuration. This interpretation is in agreement with the strong odd–even preference of long-chain n-alkanes in those samples, suggesting that the ββ hopanes may be the early diagenetic products of biohopanoids and the αβ, βα configurations of hopanes were mainly derived from allochthonous sources contributing to the organic matter of the carbonates. In terms of hopanoid acids, the C30 to C33 17β(H), 21β(H)-hopanoid acids were detected with C32 17β(H), 21β(H)-hopanoid acid being the most abundant. However, there is a significant difference in stable carbon isotopic compostions of the C32 17β(H), 21β(H)-hopanoic acid among samples (−30.7‰ to −69.8‰). The δ13C values match well with the carbon isotopic compositions of SRB-derived iso-/anteiso-C15:0 fatty acids in the samples, which strongly depend on the carbon utilization types by microbe. The most abundant compound of hopanols detected in the samples, C30-17β(H), 21β(H)-hopanol, may be a good indicator of diagenetic product of type I methanotrophs. The molecular and carbon isotopic compositions of hopanoids demonstrate clearly that there is a combination contribution of both SRB and type I or type X methanotrophs to the source organism in the seep carbonates from the South China Sea continental slope.  相似文献

We investigated the latitudinal changes in atmospheric transport of organic matter to the western Pacific and Southern Ocean (27.58°N-64.70°S). Molecular distributions of lipid compound classes (homologous series of C15 to C35n-alkanes, C8 to C34n-alkanoic acids, C12 to C30n-alkanols) and compound-specific stable isotopes (δ13C of C29 and C31n-alkanes) were measured in marine aerosol filter samples collected during a cruise by the R/V Hakuho Maru. The geographical source areas for each sample were estimated from air-mass back-trajectory computations. Concentrations of TC and lipid compound classes were several orders of magnitude lower than observations from urban sites in Asia. A stronger signature of terrestrial higher plant inputs was apparent in three samples collected under conditions of strong terrestrial winds. Unresolved complex mixtures (UCM) showed increasing values in the North Pacific, highlighting the influence of the plume of polluted air exported from East Asia. n-Alkane average chain length (ACL) distribution had two clusters, with samples showing a relation to latitude between 28°N and 47°S (highest ACL values in the tropics), whilst a subset of southern samples had anomalously high ACL values. Compound-specific carbon isotopic analysis of the C29 (−25.6‰ to −34.5‰) and C31n-alkanes (−28.3‰ to −37‰) revealed heavier δ13C values in the northern latitudes with a transition to lighter values in the Southern Ocean. By comparing the isotopic measurements with back-trajectory analysis it was generally possible to discriminate between different source areas. The terrestrial vegetation source for a subset of the southernmost Southern Ocean is enigmatic; the back-trajectories indicate eastern Antarctica as the only intercepted terrestrial source area. These samples may represent a southern hemisphere background of well mixed and very long range transported higher plant organic material.  相似文献

Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system was studied for the separation and enrichment of steroid and hopanoid hydrocarbons from crude oil for stable carbon isotope analysis. A crude oil sample was pretreated using silica gel chromatography and 5A molecular sieve to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and n-alkanes. The GPC behavior of both the pretreated saturated hydrocarbon fraction of the oil and standard steroid [5α(H), 14α(H), 17α(H) C27–C29 steranes], hopanoid [17α(H) C27 trisnorhopane, 17α(H), 21β(H) C29–C32 hopanes] and triterpenoid [18α(H)-oleanane, gammacerane] mixtures were examined. The results indicate that 17α(H), 21β(H) hopanes as well as steranes could be enriched efficiently using GPC and that they could be obtained without removing n-alkanes from the oil saturated hydrocarbon fraction. The GPC behavior of steroid and triterpenoid hydrocarbons was controlled by molecular size and shape.  相似文献

The carbon geochemistry of serpentinized peridotites and gabbroic rocks recovered at the Lost City Hydrothermal Field (LCHF) and drilled at IODP Hole 1309D at the central dome of the Atlantis Massif (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 30°N) was examined to characterize carbon sources and speciation in oceanic basement rocks affected by long-lived hydrothermal alteration. Our study presents new data on the geochemistry of organic carbon in the oceanic lithosphere and provides constraints on the fate of dissolved organic carbon in seawater during serpentinization. The basement rocks of the Atlantis Massif are characterized by total carbon (TC) contents of 59 ppm to 1.6 wt% and δ13CTC values ranging from −28.7‰ to +2.3‰. In contrast, total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations and isotopic compositions are relatively constant (δ13CTOC: −28.9‰ to −21.5‰) and variations in δ13CTC reflect mixing of organic carbon with carbonates of marine origin. Saturated hydrocarbons extracted from serpentinites beneath the LCHF consist of n-alkanes ranging from C15 to C30. Longer-chain hydrocarbons (up to C40) are observed in olivine-rich samples from the central dome (IODP Hole 1309D). Occurrences of isoprenoids (pristane, phytane and squalane), polycyclic compounds (hopanes and steranes) and higher relative abundances of n-C16 to n-C20 alkanes in the serpentinites of the southern wall suggest a marine organic input. The vent fluids are characterized by high concentrations of methane and hydrogen, with a putative abiotic origin of hydrocarbons; however, evidence for an inorganic source of n-alkanes in the basement rocks remains equivocal. We propose that high seawater fluxes in the southern part of the Atlantis Massif likely favor the transport and incorporation of marine dissolved organic carbon and overprints possible abiotic geochemical signatures. The presence of pristane, phytane and squalane biomarkers in olivine-rich samples associated with local faults at the central dome implies fracture-controlled seawater circulation deep into the gabbroic core of the massif. Thus, our study indicates that hydrocarbons account for an important proportion of the total carbon stored in the Atlantis Massif basement and suggests that serpentinites may represent an important—as yet unidentified—reservoir for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from seawater.  相似文献

Neptunium is one of the few radioactive elements that are of great concern in the disposal of nuclear wastes in the geological repository, due to its hazards and the long half-life of the isotope, 237Np (t1/2 = 2.14 × 106 years). To understand and predict the migration behavior of neptunium in the geological media, it is of importance to study its hydrolysis at elevated temperatures, because the temperature in the waste package and the vicinity of the repository could be high. Moreover, the chemical analogy between neptunium(V) and plutonium(V) adds even greater value to this investigation, because the latter could exist at tracer levels in neutral and slightly oxidizing waters but is difficult to study due to its rather labile redox behavior. In this work, the hydrolysis of neptunium(V) was studied at variable temperatures (10 to 85°C) in tetramethylammonium chloride (1.12 mol kg−1). Two hydrolyzed species of neptunium(V), NpO2OH(aq) and NpO2(OH)2, were identified by potentiometry and Near-IR absorption spectroscopy. The hydrolysis constants (*βn) and enthalpy of hydrolysis (ΔHn) for the reaction NpO2+ + nH2O = NpO2(OH)n(1−n)+ + nH+ (n = 1 and 2) were determined by titration potentiometry and microcalorimetry. The hydrolysis constants, *β1 and *β2, increased by 0.8 and 3.4 orders of magnitude, respectively, as the temperature was increased from 10 to 85°C. The enhancement of hydrolysis at elevated temperatures is mainly due to the significant increase of the degree of ionization of water as the temperature is increased. The hydrolysis reactions are endothermic but become less endothermic as the temperature is increased. The heat capacities of hydrolysis, ΔCp1 and ΔCp2, are calculated to be −(71 ± 17) J K−1 mol−1 and −(127 ± 17) J K−1 mol−1, respectively. Approximation approaches to predict the effect of temperature, including the constant enthalpy approach, the constant heat capacity approach and the DQUANT equation, have been tested with the data.  相似文献

Bulk and molecular stable C isotopic compositions and biomarker distributions provide evidence for a diverse community of algal and bacterial organisms in the sedimentary organic matter of a carbonate section throughout the Permian–Triassic (P/Tr) transition at the Idrijca Valley, Western Slovenia. The input of algae and bacteria in all the Upper Permian and Lower Scythian samples is represented by the predominance of C15–C22 n-alkanes, odd C-number alkylcyclohexanes, C27 steranes and substantial contents of C21–C30 acyclic isoprenoids. The occurrence of odd long-chain n-alkanes (C22–C30) and C29 steranes in all the samples indicate a contribution of continental material. The decrease of Corg and Ccarb contents, increase of Rock-Eval oxygen indices, and 13C-enrichment of the kerogen suggest a decrease in anoxia of the uppermost Permian bottom water. The predominance of odd C-number alkylcycloalkanes, C27 steranes, and C17 n-alkanes with δ13C values ∼−30‰, and 13C-enrichment of the kerogens in the lowermost Scythian samples are evidence of greater algal productivity. This increased productivity was probably sustained by a high nutrient availability and changes of dissolved CO2 speciation associated to the earliest Triassic transgression. A decrease of Corg content in the uppermost Scythian samples, associated to a 13C-depletetion in the carbonates (up to 4‰) and individual n-alkanes (up to 3.4‰) compared to the Upper Permian samples, indicate lowering of the primary productivity (algae, cyanobacteria) and/or higher degradation of the organic matter.  相似文献

The behavior of strontium during the replacement of aragonite by calcite, in a closed system between 40°C and 98°C, has been experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted in CaCl2 solutions, with and without NaCl. The distribution coefficient of strontium in calcite (λSr2+C) was found to be affected only slightly by temperature changes, and almost insignificantly by the presence of NaCl. λSr2+C values at 0.01 mCa2+ (its concentration in normal sea water) are: 0.055 at 40°C and 0.058 at 98°C. These results indicate that the low (around 500 ppm) concentration of strontium in ancient limestones could have been brought about by aragonite-to-calcite transformation in a system open to sea water, and are not necessarily indicative of replacement in fresh waters.  相似文献

We measured molecular distributions and compound-specific hydrogen (δD) and stable carbon isotopic ratios (δ13C) of mid- and long-chain n-alkanes in forest soils, wetland peats and lake sediments within the Dorokawa watershed, Hokkaido, Japan, to better understand sources and processes associate with delivery of terrestrial organic matter into the lake sediments. δ13C values of odd carbon numbered C23-C33n-alkanes ranged from −37.2‰ to −31.5‰, while δD values of these alkanes showed a large degree of variability that ranged from −244‰ to −180‰. Molecular distributions in combination with stable carbon isotopic compositions indicate a large contribution of C3 trees as the main source of n-alkanes in forested soils whereas n-alkanes in wetland soil are exclusively derived from marsh grass and/or moss. We found that the n-alkane δD values are much higher in forest soils than wetland peat. The higher δD values in forest samples could be explained by the enrichment of deuterium in leaf and soil waters due to increased evapotranspiration in the forest or differences in physiology of source plants between wetland and forest. A δ13C vs. δD diagram of n-alkanes among forest, wetland and lake samples showed that C25-C31n-alkanes deposited in lake sediments are mainly derived from tree leaves due to the preferential transport of the forest soil organic matter over the wetland or an increased contribution of atmospheric input of tree leaf wax in the offshore sites. This study demonstrates that compound-specific δD analysis provides a useful approach for better understanding source and transport of terrestrial biomarkers in a C3 plant-dominated catchment.  相似文献

The most widely accepted origin of n-alkan-2-ones in peats is the microbial oxidation of the related n-alkanes and/or oxidative decarboxylation of fatty acids derived from plant input. The distributions of n-alkanes and n-alkan-2-ones in 48 samples from the Roñanzas 6000 cal. yr BP peat bog profile (N Spain) do not justify a single source. The n-alkan-2-ones typically dominate the n-alkanes, maximizing at C19 or C25/C27, whereas the n-alkanes maximized either at C23 or at C31/C33. The averaged δ13C values of the n-alkanes ranged from −32.3‰ to −33.1‰, but those of the n-alkan-2-ones were consistently higher (−29.2‰ to −29.9‰), suggesting a different, probably bacterial, source for the ketones.  相似文献

To constrain seasonal changes in the long-range atmospheric transport of land-derived lipid biomarker compounds, we investigated the compound-specific stable isotopic composition of marine aerosol n-alkanes collected from 1990 to 1993 at a remote island, Chichi-Jima (27°04′N, 142°13′E), in the western North Pacific. Compound-specific isotope analysis revealed, in particular, strong seasonal changes in the δ13C values of the C29 and C31n-alkanes (biomarkers for higher plants). Lighter δ13C values were observed in winter (typically −32 to −34‰), with a transition to heavier values in summer (typically −28 to −31‰). Using a mixing equation and typical end members for C3 and C4 plants, we found that this is due to relative increases in the contributions from C4 plants in the summer season. Using backward air-mass trajectory analyses, it was shown that the Asian continent was the major source region for C3 plant material during winter/spring, whereas Indonesia/Australia and possibly the Americas were the major source regions for C4 material during the summer/autumn. Also observed was an enhanced atmospheric transport of n-alkanes from C4 plants in 1991 summer/autumn during a strong El Nino event, which was associated with forest and bushfires in Indonesia and Australia. In addition to providing information on contemporary processes, this study also provides a base for future paleoclimatological work in ocean sediments.  相似文献

The aliphatic hydrocarbon composition (acyclic isoprenoids, hopanoids and steroids) of oils from the most productive fields in the southern geological Province of Cuba have been studied. This province is defined by its position with respect to the Cretaceous overthrust belt generated during the formation of oceanic crust along the axis of the proto-Caribbean Basin. The relative abundances of 18α(H)-22,29,30-trisnorneohopane, gammacerane and diasteranes suggest that Pina oils are related to the carbonate oils from the Placetas Unit in the northern province (low Ts/(Ts+Tm) and C27,29 rr/(rr+sd) ratios). The Cristales and Jatibonico oils exhibit some differentiating features such as higher Ts/(Ts+Tm) and absence of gammacerane. The oils from this province do not exhibit significant differences in either hopane, C32 22S/(S+R) and C30 αβ/(αβ+βα), or sterane, C29 αα 20S/(S+R), maturity ratios. However, the relative content of 5α(H),14β(H),17β(H)-cholestanes (C29 ββ/(ββ+αα) ratio) indicates that Pina oils are more mature than Cristales and Jatibonico oils. Several of these oils (Cristales, Jatibonico and Pina 26) are heavily biodegraded, lacking n-alkanes, norpristane, pristane and phytane (the two former oils do not contain acyclic isoprenoid hydrocarbons). Other biodegradation products, the 25-norhopanes, are found in all the oils. Their occurrence is probably due to mixing of severely biodegraded oil residues with undegraded crude oils during accumulation in the reservoir.  相似文献

We experimentally determined the boron partitioning and boron isotope fractionation between coexisting liquid and vapor in the system H2O−NaCl−B2O3. Experiments were performed along the 400 and 450°C isotherms. Pressure conditions ranged from 23 to 28 MPa at 400°C and from 38 to 42 MPa at 450°C. Boron partitions preferentially into the liquid. Its overall liquid-vapor fractionation is, however, weak: Calculated boron distribution coefficients DBliquid-vapor are < 2.5 at all run conditions. With decreasing pressure (i.e. increasing opening of the solvus) DBliquid-vapor increases along the individual isotherms. Extrapolation to salt saturated conditions yields maximum boron liquid-vapor fractionations of DBliquid-vapor = 1.8 at 450°C and DBliquid-vapor = 2.7 at 400°C. 11B preferentially fractionates into the vapor. Calculated Δ11Bvapor-liquid = {[(11B/10B)vapor - (11B/10B)liquid]/(11B/10B)NBS 951}*1000 are small and range from 0.2 (± 0.7) to 0.9 (± 0.5) ‰ at 450°C and from 0.1 (± 0.6) to 0.7 (± 0.6) ‰ at 400°C. The data indicate increasing isotopic fractionation with decreasing pressure (i.e. increasing opening of the solvus). Extrapolation to salt saturated conditions yields maximum boron isotope liquid-vapor fractionations of Δ11Bvapor-liquid = 1.5 (± 0.7) ‰ at 450°C and Δ11Bvapor-liquid = 1.3 (± 0.6) ‰ at 400°C. The weak boron isotope fractionation suggests similar trigonal speciation in liquid and vapor. Although the boron and boron isotope fractionation between liquid and vapor is only weak, mass balance calculations indicate that for high degrees of fractionation liquid-vapor phase separation in an open system can significantly alter the boron and boron isotope signature of low-salinity hydrous fluids in hydrothermal systems. Comparing the model calculations with natural oceanic hydrothermal fluids, however, indicate that other processes than fluid phase separation dominate the boron geochemistry in oceanic hydrothermal fluids.  相似文献

This study sought to characterize hydrogen isotopic fractionation during biosynthesis of leaf wax n-alkanes in succulent plants capable of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM). The metabolic and physiological features of CAM represent crucial strategies for survival in hot and dry climates and have been hypothesized to impact hydrogen isotope fractionation. We measured the stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions (δ13C and δD, respectively) of individual n-alkanes in 20 species of succulent plants from a global collection of the Huntington Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California. Greenhouse conditions and irrigation with water of constant δD value enabled determination of interspecies differences in net D/H fractionation between source water and leaf wax products. Carbon isotope ratios provide constraints on the extent of CAM vs. C3 photosynthesis and indicate a wide range of CAM use, with δ13C values ranging from −33.01‰ to −18.54‰ (C27–C33 n-alkanes) and −26.66‰ to −17.64‰ (bulk tissue). Despite the controlled growth environment, we observed ca. 90‰ interspecies range in δD values from −193‰ to −107‰. A positive correlation between δ13Cbulk and δDC31 values with R2 = 0.60 (δ13CC31 and δDC31 values with R2 = 0.41) implicates a metabolic isotope effect as the dominant cause of interspecies variation in the hydrogen isotopic composition of leaf wax n-alkanes in CAM-intermediate plants.  相似文献

The carbon isotope composition (δ13C values) of long chain n-alkanes in lake sediments has been considered a reliable means of tracking changes in the terrigenous contribution of plants with C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways. A key premise is that long chain leaf wax components used for isotope analysis are derived primarily from terrigenous higher plants. The role of aquatic plants in affecting δ13C values of long chain n-alkanes in lacustrine sediments may, however, have long been underestimated. In this study, we found that a large portion of long chain n-alkanes (C27 and C29) in nearshore sediments of the Lake Qinghai catchment was contributed by submerged aquatic plants, which displayed a relatively positive carbon isotope composition (e.g. −26.7‰ to −15.7‰ for C29) similar to that of terrestrial C4 plants. Thus, the use of δ13C values of sedimentary C27 and C29 n-alkanes for tracing terrigenous vegetation composition may create a bias toward significant overestimation/underestimation of the proportion of terrestrial C4 plants. For sedimentary C31, however, the contribution from submerged plants was minor, so that the δ13C values for C31 n-alkane in surface sediments were in accord with those of the modern terrestrial vegetation in the Lake Qinghai region. Moreover, we found that changes in the δ13C values of sedimentary C27 and C29 n-alkanes were closely related to water depth variation. Downcore analysis further demonstrated the significant influence of endogenous lipids in lake sediments for the interpretation of terrestrial C4 vegetation and associated environment/climate reconstruction. In conclusion, our results suggest that the δ13C values of sedimentary long chain n-alkanes (C27, C29 and C31) may carry different environmental signals. While the δ13C values of C31 were a reliable proxy for C4/C3 terrestrial vegetation composition, the δ13C values of C27 and C29 n-alkanes may have recorded lake ecological conditions and sources of organic carbon, which might be affected by lake water depth.  相似文献

This study investigates the extent of post-depositional alteration of δD values of n-alkyl lipids, isoprenoids, and kerogen isolated from a continuous 450 m core that covers the transition from thermally immature to early mature sediments in the lacustrine Kissenda Formation, Lower Cretaceous, Gabon Basin. Large variations in δD values (up to 40‰ for nC17 and up to 30‰ for nC29 alkanes as well as up to 10‰ for kerogen) in closely spaced samples are evident throughout the core and remain preserved even at the bottom of the section. δD values of individual n-alkanes show a slight overall D-enrichment with depth, and a general trend of increasing δD values with increasing n-alkane chain length characterizes all samples, particularly in those below 600 m depth. Hydrogen isotopic compositions of kerogen samples overlap with those of n-alkanes throughout the section. δD values of pristane and phytane are more negative than those of nC17 alkane by as much as 120‰ at shallow depths but increase dramatically and approach δD values of nC17 alkane in the samples closest to the oil window. Integration of analytical and computational results indicates that: (1) n-alkanes and isoprenoids have the potential to preserve the original biological signal before the onset of oil generation; (2) isomeric and structural rearrangements taking place at the beginning stages of oil generation do not influence significantly the δD values of n-alkanes and kerogen. However, these processes have a major effect on the isotopic composition of isoprenoids, causing isotopic D-enrichment up to 90‰.  相似文献

Various aquatic plants from Lake Qinghai, the largest inland saline lake in China, and terrestrial plants from the surrounding area were investigated for the distribution of n-alkanes and their δD values. The n-alkanes in the samples range from C15 to C33 with C preference index (CPI) values of 4.0–29.7. The n-C23 or n-C25 alkane is the dominant compound in the aquatic submerged plants. The aquatic emergent and terrestrial plants have an abundance maximum at n-C27, n-C29 or n-C31. The average chain length (ACL) values, ranging from 26.0 to 29.6, are closely related to the plant species. The n-alkanes from the aquatic plants have mean δD values of −169‰ to −121‰ and those from the terrestrial plants values of −173‰ to −109‰. The H isotopic composition (δD) and fractionation differ significantly among the plants studied. Comparison shows that additional evaporative enrichment of the lake water associated with saline lakes and humidity influence the δD values of the n-alkanes in aquatic and terrestrial plants, respectively. The mean δD values of n-alkanes in the plants decrease with increasing ACL value. The n-alkanes from the different types of plants are more depleted in D relative to environmental water and those from aquatic plants (with a mean value of −143‰) have a greater isotopic fractionation than terrestrial plants (mean value −113‰).  相似文献

The Mundaú–Manguaba estuarine–lagoon system (MMELS) constitutes one of the most representative ecosystems in the state of Alagoas, NE Brazil. Approximately 30% or 60,000 ha of the lower surrounding drainage basin of the MMELS are covered by sugar cane and a total of 250,000 inhabitants contribute untreated effluent to the system. Short sediment cores from MMELS were collected in 2007 at three sites: Manguaba Lagoon (C03), Mundaú Lagoon (C07) and Mundaú River (C08) in order to characterize the delivery and deposition of n-alkanes over the past 40 yr. The n-alkanes ranged from C15 to C35, with total aliphatic hydrocarbon (TAH) concentration in the range 27.8–139.5 μg g−1. An unresolved complex mixture (UCM) was observed in all sediments. The terrigenous/aquatic ratio (TAR), carbon preference index (CPI) and average chain length (ACL) showed that the terrigenous input dominated. The (δ13C) values of individual n-alkanes (C16–C33) varied between −22.6‰ and −34.2‰, suggesting a dominance of 12C-enriched n-alkanes that originated from C3 plants and lacustrine algae. The data reflect how anthropogenic input (via sewage, industrial pollution and agriculture) has influenced the organic content of the system through time.  相似文献

Seven coal and carbonaceous mudstone samples were collected from outcropping Jurassic coal beds, on the margin of the Dingxi Basin, Northwestern China. The n-alkane distributions in all of the samples are characterised by high concentrations of the C19–C29 homologues, and very much lower amounts outside of this range. C23 or C24 are usually the most abundant n-alkanes. Straight chain n-alkanes from C23 to C29 show moderate odd-to-even C number predominances (CPI range: 1.26–2.70). Long-chain acyclic n-alkan-2-ones, n-alkan-3-ones and n-alkan-4-ones ranging from C15 to C33 with moderate odd-to-even C number predominances, were detected together with one isoprenoid methyl ketone (6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one) in all of the samples. The C number distributions of the three series of alkanones show a similar distribution to that of the n-alkanes, but the correspondence is not sufficient to substantiate a product–precursor relationship. It can be concluded that the n-alkan-2-ones are a mixture of the products of microbially-mediated β-oxidation of corresponding n-alkanes in the sediments and from the microbial oxidation of higher plant-derived n-alkanes prior to incorporation in the sediments. The n-alkan-3-ones and n-alkan-4-ones were formed from microbially mediated oxidation of the corresponding n-alkanes in the γ and δ positions, respectively. Generation of the ketones from higher plant n-fatty alcohols and n-alkanoic acids could be a possible way to form some of the ketones observed, but it can only play a minor role in the samples analysed.  相似文献

Compound-specific isotope measurements of organic compounds are increasingly important in palaeoclimate reconstruction. Searching for more accurate peat-based palaeoenvironmental proxies, compound-specific fractionation of stable C, H and O isotopes of organic compounds synthesized by Sphagnum were determined in a greenhouse study. Three Sphagnum species were grown under controlled climate conditions. Stable isotope ratios of cellulose, bulk organic matter (OM) and C21–C25 n-alkanes were measured to explore whether fractionation in Sphagnum is species-specific, as a result of either environmental conditions or genetic variation. The oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of cellulose was equal for all species and all treatments. The hydrogen isotopic composition (δD) of the n-alkanes displayed an unexpected variation among the species, with values between −154‰ for Sphagnum rubellum and −184‰ for Sphagnum fallax for the C23 n-alkane, irrespective of groundwater level. The stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of the latter also showed a species-specific pattern. The pattern was similar for the carbon isotope fractionation of bulk OM, although the C23 n-alkane was >10‰ more depleted than the bulk OM. The variation in H fractionation may originate in the lipid biosynthesis, whereas C fractionation is also related to humidity conditions. Our findings clearly emphasize the importance of species identification in palaeoclimate studies based on stable isotopes from peat cores.  相似文献

Alkane hydrocarbon and n-fatty acid distributions have been examined in cores taken over a 550 ft thickness through the lower Jurassic, largely non-marine Evergreen Shale, Surat Basin, Queensland, Australia. No depth trends in compound abundances or carbon preference indices are discernible. There is no evidence for significant generation of n-alkanes from kerogen nor for cracking of long-chain n-alkanes. The present distribution patterns of the biochemicals probably reflect closely the nature of the original organic matter. The general strong dominance of long-chain (C20+) n-alkanes; the lack of evidence for diagenetic change; and the absence of correlation between abundances of n-alkanes and n-fatty acids (among both the longer- and shorter-chain compounds), lead to the conclusion that at least the long-chain n-alkanes were largely deposited as such in the sediment, having originated in land-plant material, remains of which are abundant in the samples. In the upper 170 ft. (possibly marine), n-alkanes with chain lengths below C20 become important, suggesting greater significance of aquatic life as a source of organic matter at the time of deposition, a conclusion which is in general accord with the geological history of the basin, although this history is not well known.  相似文献
