We determine the momentum distribution of the relativistic particles near the Crab pulsar from the observed X- and -ray spectra (103109 eV), provided that the curvature radiation is responsible for it. The power law spectrum for the relativistic electrons,f() –5, reproduces a close fit to the observed high-energy photon spectrum. The theoretically determined upper limit to the momentum (due to radiation damping), M 8×106, corresponds to the upper cut-off energy of the -ray spectrum, 109 eV. The lower limit to the momentum, m 1.8×105, is chosen such that flattening of the X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is simulated. The number density of these electrons is found to be much higher than the Goldreich-Julian density. We also discuss pulse shape and polarization of high-energy photons. The extremely high density of particles and the steep momentum spectrum are difficult to understand. This may imply that another, more efficient, mechanism is in operation.  相似文献

The RS CVn binary stellar system HR 1099 is a source of both X-ray and radio flares. We present here a model of the system in which the two types of flare are produced by the same population of mildly-relativistic ( 10) electrons, injected into a coronal loop. After reviewing possible radiation mechanisms we conclude that, given the probable conditions in the flaring region, the radio emission is gyrosynchrotron radiation and the X-ray emission is thermal bremsstrahlung. The thermal X-ray source must lie in the stellar chromosphere, but the apparent absence of plasma absorption at radio frequencies indicates that the radio source is located high in the coronal loop. Using the relationships given by Dulk and Marsh (1982) for the radio emission from a power-law electron energy spectrum,N() ( - 1), we conclude that 3 7, with 30% of the electron population trapped in the radio source. Some implications of these results for one particular version of the model are discussed.  相似文献

The Orion cloud complex in the Milky Way is a source of-rays attributable to cosmic-ray interactions with ambient thermal gas. Quantities upon which the-ray flux depends can be scaled to the QSO 3C273. This result supports the hypothesis that at least some of the-rays from this object and other QSOs may also be attributed to a similarpp-interaction scenario.  相似文献

We have examined six solar neutron events measured by satellite instruments and/or neutron monitors (NM) to understand the relationship between the intensity–time profiles of the -ray lines, the pion-related -rays, and the neutron production. In all six events the solar neutron production was clearly time-extended. We find that neutron emission as detected by NMs most closely follows the emission of pion-related -rays, whereas lower energy neutron production may follow that of nuclear -ray line emissions. Although this distinction is not unexpected, it is safe to say that the 2.223 MeV -ray line from neutron capture on hydrogen is a poor measure of the neutron production at energies >200 MeV. During the three events on 1982, June 3, 1990, May 24 and 1991, June 4 solar neutrons with energies greater than 200 MeV were recorded by NMs. The NM increases on 1982, June 3 and 1990, May 24 can be modeled using the time profile of the pion-related -rays. For the 1991, June 4 event the NM signal was small but lasted for 60 min and the high-energy -ray data available to us are insufficient to conclude unambiguously that the high-energy neutron production followed the pion-related -rays. In the other three events on 1991, June 9, 11, and 15 solar neutrons with energies 10–100 MeV were observed by the COMPTEL -ray instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The duration of the low-energy neutron production on 1991, June 9 corresponded clearly to the high-energy and not to the low-energy -ray emission.  相似文献

This work contains a transformation of Hill-Brown differential equations for the coordinates of the satellite to a type which can be integrated in a literal form using an analytical programming language. The differential equation for the parallax of the satellite is also established. Its use facilitates the computation of Hill's periodic intermediary orbit of the satellite and provides a good check for the expansion of the coordinates and frequencies. The knowledge of the expansion of the parallax facilitates the formation of differential equations for terms with a given characteristic. These differential equations are put into a form which favors the solution by means of iteration on the computer. As in the classical theory we obtain the expansions of the coordinates and of the parallax in the form of trigonometric series in four arguments and in powers of the constants of integration. We expand the differential operators into series in squares of the constants of integration. Only the terms of order zero in these expansions are employed in the integration of the differential equations. The remaining terms are responsible for producing the cross-effects between the perturbations of different order. By applying the averaging operator to the right sides of the differential equations we deduce the expansion of the frequencies in powers of squares of the constants of integration.Basic Notations f the gravitational constant - E the mass of the planet - M the mass of the satellite - t dynamical time - x, y, z planetocentric coordinates of the satellite - u x+y–1 - s x–y–1 - the planetocentric distance of the satellite - w 1/ - 0 the variational part of - w 0 the variational part ofw, - n the mean daily sidereal motion of the satellite - a the mean semi-major axis of the satellite defined by means of the Kepler relation:a 3 n 2=f(E+M) - a the mean semi-major axis defined as the constant factor attached to the variational solution - e the constant of the eccentricity of the satellite - the sine of one half the orbital inclination of the satellite relative to the orbit of the sun - c(n–n) the anomalistic frequency of the satellite - c 0 the part ofc independent frome,e, and - g(n–n) the draconitic frequency of the satellite, - g 0 the part ofg independent frome,e, and - exp (n–n)t–1 - D d/d - e the eccentricity of the solar planetocentric orbit - a the semi-major axis of the solar orbit - n the mean daily motion of the sun in its orbit around the planet - m n/(n–n) - a/a-the parallactic factor - the disturbing function  相似文献

The data on the spectrum of the cosmic-ray electron component near the earth, on the radio-spectra of radio-galaxies, quasars and the Crab Nebula, as well as the data pertaining to the X-ray spectrum of the cosmic background, all agree that the sources of cosmic-ray electrons (such as supernovae and galactic nuclei) inject particles characterized by a power spectrumN(E)=KE –0, with 01.5–2.5. A mechanism is known in which the source emits a proton-nuclear component of cosmic rays with a spectrumN n (E)=K n E n, n = + 2, =w cr/(ww cr), wherew cr is the cosmic-ray energy density in the source, andw=w cr+w n+w turb, the total energy density. We obtain =2.5 in agreement with observations on the natural assumption that =0.5. Within the framework of the same model with some additional assumptions, the electrons in the source, as well as those ejected by the source, are shown to have a power-spectrum characterized with 0 n = + 2. Thus the model discussed gives an adequate spectrum for both the proton-nuclear and the electron components of cosmic rays.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of the lunar interior has been determined from magnetic field step transients measured on the lunar dark side. The simplest model which best fits the data is a spherically symmetric three layer model having a nonconducting outer crust of radial thickness 0.03R moon; an intermediate layer of thicknessR0.37R moon, with electrical conductivity 1 3.5 × 10–4 mhos/m; and an inner core of radiusR 2 0.6R m with conductivity 2 10–2 mhos/m. Temperatures calculated from these conductivities in the three regions for an example of an olivine Moon are as follows: crust, < 440 K; intermediate layer, 890 K; and core, 1240 K. The whole-moon relative permeability has been calculated from the measurements to be/ 0 = 1.03 ± 0.13. Remanent magnetic fields at the landing sites are 38 ± 3 at Apollo 12, 43 ± 6 and 103 ± 5 at two Apollo 14 sites separated by 1.1 km, and 6 ± 4 at the Apollo 15 site. Measurements show that the 38 remanent field at the Apollo 12 site is compressed to 54 by a solar wind pressure increase of 7 × 10–8 dynes/cm2.National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate.  相似文献

A statistical study of the initial phases of 185 solar particle events has been carried out using the data from the Goddard cosmic ray experiments on IMPs IV and V. Special emphasis is placed on the identification of the associated solar flare. The parent flare can be determined for 68 % of the events. It appears probable that most of the unidentified increases occur on the non-visible disc of the Sun. The existence of a preferred-connection longitude between 20°W and 80° W is established by examining the heliolongitude of all the flare associated events. While power law in differential kinetic energy appears to give the best representation it cannot be distinguished from exponential in rigidity over the limited range of 20–80 MeV. It is argued that for heliolongitudes = 20–80°W, p ,the spectral index determined at the time of maximum particle intensity is representative of the source spectra. For these heliolongitudes p displays a surprisingly small range with magnitudes varying mainly between 2.0 and 3.1. At lower energies p is smaller. Previous electron measurements provide almost identical average values of the source spectra over similar energy ranges. These results are discussed briefly in terms of Fermi acceleration models. For flare events located further away from the nominal field line connecting the Earth and the Sun, p becomes progressively steeper. The lower energies (4–20 MeV) do not exhibit this behavior. It is argued that this spectral steepening at the higher energies is the result of energy-dependent escape during the coronal diffusion process. The size distribution can be represented by a power law of the form dN/dI=I - where N is the number of events per unit intensity and I is the maximum particle intensity at a given energy (usually taken at 40 MeV) with 1.15 ±0.1. The same value of a applies to both eastern and western hemisphere events. The event size, on the average, appears to decrease approximately two orders of magnitude for each 60° away from the preferred connection region. Also: Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Maryland, College Park, Md., U.S.A.  相似文献

The method of obtaining the estimates of the maximalt-interval ( , +) on which the solution of theN-body problem exists and which is such that some fixed mutual distance (e. g. 12) exceeds some fixed non-negative lower bound, for allt contained in ( , +), is considered. For given masses and initial data, the increasing sequences of the numbers k , each of which provides the estimate + > k , are constructed. It appears that if + = +, then .  相似文献

The integralsJ , m were introduced by Kopal for the numerical evaluation of the light changes exhibited by eclipsing binaries when both the tidal and rotational distrotions are taken into account. This paper is a sequel to a previous one to appear in this journal and aims at ascertaining some recursion formulae for these integrals to alleviate the computational complexity of the problem.Using a relationship existing between theJ-integrals and the Appell hypergeometric series of the first kind, we have been able to obtain recursion formulae affecting all three parametersm , of these integrals. The present stage of development has also allowed for a complete enumeration of all independent recursion formulae applicable to the case of partial eclipses.Various recursion formulae, given here for the first time, generalize previous results by Kopal which were valid form=0 ory=0.  相似文献

We discuss the hypothesis suggested by Mazurek (1979) that neutrino oscillations (v e v ) could transfer leptonic zero-point energy (e -,v e ; <4/3) to baryons during the gravitational collapse of a massive star (M10M ) and that subsequently the collapse ends in a stellar explosion (>4/3). The estimation of the lengths of neutrino oscillations if occuring in vacuum or dense matter, respectively, shows, however, that vacuum oscillations can be suppressed in dense matter and, therefore, should have no influence on the neutrino emission of neutron stars.  相似文献

We determine empirical damping constants for 73 selected Fe i lines following the method of Gurtovenko and Kondrashova (1980), employing high-quality observations and the accurate list of Fe i oscillator strengths by Gurtovenko and Kostik (1980).The results show: (i) No increase of the enhancement factor to van der Waals broadening with excitation potential, as predicted by Edmunds (1975), and with the frequency of the transition (Figure 1); (ii) a substantial part of the commonly-used enhancement factor for weaker lines is not due to collisional damping (Figure 2), but to a misrepresentation of the inhomogeneous structure of the deep photosphere. This false damping effect is not seen in the stronger lines which yield an average damping constant : 1.36 1.5 6.  相似文献

The area preserving mapping x = x + a(yy 3), y = ya(xx3), for 0.3 a 2.0 has been studied to locate approximately the x-axis points bounding almost stable regions. For each value of a, these are fixed points with variational trace just greater than 2.0. Transition to chaos can occur rapidly as a increases (with n/k fixed).  相似文献

Two hyades giant stars, and Tau, have been studied from an analysis of strong line profiles. We get for Tau,T e =4750K and logg=2.7, and for Tau,T e =4700K and logg=2.8. Hydrogen-to-metal ratio for the two stars is nearly the same as that of solar value.  相似文献

The two-dimensional force-free field equations are studied. The solar photosphere is considered as flat and infinitely extended and the magnetic field component perpendicular to the photosphere is prescribed as the field of a submerged line dipole, i.e. with two magnetic polarities divided by a straight infinitely long neutral line. In addition the shear of the field lines along the neutral line, i.e. the difference of the coordinate parallel to the neutral line of the two foot-points of a field line, is prescribed as a function f of the distance to the neutral line times a nonnegative constant . The function f is zero at the neutral line, goes through a maximum and drops to zero at large distances from the neutral line. The case = 0 corresponds to the current-free field. An approximate solution is obtained by a test function method. It is shown that for certain choices of the function f there exists a maximum value of beyond which a steady continuation of the solution is impossible. This forces the field to jump to a state of lower energy. The potential field, for instance, is such a lower energy state. Since the shear was prescribed as a boundary condition, the jump of the magnetic field will always be accompanied by a field line reconnection. Even though the field calculated does not closely resemble the flare geometry it is speculated that discontinuities like this one may also occur in more realistic field configurations and may actually trigger the flare. An extended version of this paper is to be published elsewhere.  相似文献

It is shown that inelastic proton collisions in extragalactic radio sources can account for their radio and -ray emissions. The proton Lorentz-factor p responsible for -ray emission is estimated to lie between 1.4 and 86. But for the radio emission (with e ~ 103-104) the estimated p values lie between 7 to 300. The estimates of total particle and magnetic energy for a typical radio source is in agreement with equipartition theory.  相似文献

A spatially homogeneous and isotropic Robertson-Walker model withzero-curvature of the universe is studied within the frame-work of Lyra'smanifold. The gauge-function in Lyra's manifold is taken to betime-dependent. Exact solutions of Einstein equations are obtained for twodifferent early phases of the universe viz. Inflationary phase andradiation-dominated phase by using `gamma-law' equation of statep = ( - 1) . The -index, describing the material content, varies continuously with cosmic time so that in the course of itsevolution, the universe goes through a transition from an inflationaryphase to a radiation-dominated phase. The physical properties of themodels are also discussed.  相似文献

The scope of the present paper is to provide analytic solutions to the problem of the attitude evolution of a symmetric gyrostat about a fixed point in a central Newtonian force field when the potential function isV (2).We assume that the center of mass and the gyrostatic moment are on the axis of symmetry and that the initial conditions are the following: (t 0)=0, (t 0)=0, (t 0)=(t 0)=0, 1(t 0)=0, 2(t 0)=0 and 3(t 0)= 3 0 .The problem is integrated when the third component of the total angular momentum is different from zero (B 1 0). There now appear equilibrium solutions that did not exist in the caseB 1=0, which can be determined in function of the value ofl 3 r (the third component of the gyrostatic momentum). The possible types of solutions (elliptic, trigonometric, stationary) depend upon the nature of the roots of the functiong(u). The solutions for Euler angles are given in terms of functions of the timet. If we cancel the third component of the gyrostatic momentum (l 3 r =0), the obtained solutions are valid for rigid bodies.  相似文献

The power in the different modes of an expansion of the solar radial magnetic field at the surface in terms of Legendre polynomials,P , is calculated with the help of a solar dynamo model studied earlier. The model is of the Babcock–Leighton type, i.e., the surface eruptions of the toroidal magnetic field – through the tilt angle, , formed by the magnetic axis of a bipolar magnetic region with the east-west line – are the sources for the poloidal field. In this paper it is assumed that the tilt angle is subject to fluctuations of the form, = ()+ <> where <> is the average value and () is a random normal fluctuation with standard deviation which is taken from Howard's observations of the distribution of tilt angles. For numerical considerations, negative values of were not allowed. If this occurred, was recalculated. The numerical integrations were started with a toroidal magnetic field antisymmetric across the equator, large enough to generate eruptions, and a negligible poloidal field. The fluctuations in the tilt angle destroy the antisymmetry as time increases. The power of the antisymmetric modes across the equator (i.e., odd values of ) is concentrated in frequencies, p, corresponding to the cycle period. The maximum power lies in the =3 mode with considerable power in the =5 mode, in broad agreement with Stenflo's results who finds a maximum power at =5. For the symmetric modes, there is considerable power in frequencies larger than p, again in broad agreement with Stenflo's power spectrum.  相似文献
