The results of the photometric and polarimetric observation of the Moon's surface with high resolution from October 1969 to March 1971 are discussed. It is found that, for a wide part of the Moon's illuminated surface, the brightnessm, expressed by visual magnitude per square second of arc, can be expressed as $$m = 5.0 - 2.5\log H + 2.5\log \{ {{P_v } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{P_v } P}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} P}(\alpha )\} ,$$ whereH is the variable part of Hapke's formula,P v is the observed polarization degree, andP(α) is a function of the phase angleα. The color shows a tendency to reddening at the enhancement of the lunar brightness, and this is expressed by the relation $$B - V = - 0.2\Delta m + 1.7,$$ where Δm =m + 2.5 logH which is a sort of residual from the brightness calculated by Hapke's formula. Remarkable enhancements of the lunar brightness correspond to solar flares which appeared just before the observations. Because of this the above formula for the observed brightness can be interpreted by assuming the luminescence on the lunar surface stimulated by the solar activity.  相似文献

From the results of photometric and polarimetric observations in three colors of small areas of the Moon's illuminated surface, taking stars as the photometric standards, it is concluded that the Moon's surface brightness often fluctuates from the luminosity calculated by Hapke's formula. It seems that the Moon's light is composed of a part which is completely ruled by Hapke's law and has a uniform polarization degree over the entire illuminated surface, and a part which is quite nonpolarized. The brightness fluctuation is due to the variation of the latter part. The enhancement of the brightness is more remarkable in red color than in yellow and blue colors.  相似文献

We review the photometric work on eclipse reappearances of Io. New observations of eclipse reappearances of Io confirm the post-eclipse brightness anomaly reported by Binder and Cruikshank (1964) but testify to its intermittent nature. A post-eclipse anomaly of approximately 0.07 mag was observed on two occasions in 1972, while observations of Europa and Ganymede showed no brightness anomaly greater than 0.01 mag. The atmospheric condensation model for the anomaly on Io is reviewed in terms of the quantity of frost required to produce the effect and the corresponding amount of gas liberated to the atmosphere upon sublimation. The observational data and the results from a stellar occultation are in general accord with the theoretical predictions of the stability of heavy gases on Io, while both observational and theoretical criteria are satisfied by a tenuous atmosphere of a heavy gas such as methane or ammonia having a surface pressure ~10?7 bar.  相似文献

The flash spectra of the partial Sun and the chromosphere were obtained at the total solar eclipse on 7 March, 1970. We studied the distributions of the surface brightness of the continuum at six wavelengths in the visual region to compare them with the previous observations and the existing model atmospheres. All of the distributions show a shallow dip and a small hump similar to those of Heintze's observation at the 1954 eclipse. But the hump in our results is of quite a different type from that given by Heintze's revised model. It was found that none of the existing model atmospheres can reproduce this hump. The intensity distribution in the low chromosphere was also examined.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of night sky brightness at different zenith distances in blue, yellow and red colours have been carried out at Abu-Simbel site. Variations in the night sky brightness and (B-V) colour index with time are detected. These variations have been explained by the change of the galactic latitude of the observed point with time. The deduced results of night sky brightness have been compared with that obtained before at other sites. It has been found for both blue and yellow colours, that Abu-Simbel is the darkest site especially for zenith distances equal or greater than 60°. The present values of night sky brightness and colour have been obtained for the first time at Abu-Simbel site. The average night sky brightness at the galactic plane is 22.58 mag/arc sec2 for blue and 21.66 mag/arc sec2 for yellow. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present results of multicolor photometric and polarimetric observations of the binary system V1696 CYG obtained in the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in 2006. It is shown that observed variations of the linear polarization of the V1696 Cyg light are well correlated with the orbital period phase. We also found brightness variations (~0.1 m ) in the UBVRI bands. The brightness variations are weakly correlated with the orbital period phase. A rapid photometric variability was found.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations have been carried out during maximum solar activity in order to investigate the variation of the brightness of the lunar surface with the solar cycle and to detect the possiblity of existing colour anomaly. The brightness data, using a wide-passband filter, do not show any evidence of variation with the solar cycle. No colour anomaly is found for the investigated lunar regions, and the doubt that has been felt by some investigators about the nonexistence of certain colour indices' variation with phase is not confirmed.  相似文献

We report on observations of the full Moon brightness temperature covering the frequency range of 300-950 GHz, and also on observations of the lunar eclipse of July 16, 2000, though only covering the frequency range of 165-365 GHz due to poor atmospheric transmission at higher frequencies. All observations were performed from the summit of Mauna Kea (HI) using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer mounted on the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory and supplemented by measurements of the atmospheric opacity using a 183 GHz Water Vapor Monitor. The telescope was pointed to the center of the lunar disk (with a footprint of ∼45-15 km on the Moon at 300 through 900 GHz). In order to obtain the correct values of the Moon brightness temperatures at all frequencies we carefully corrected for the atmospheric absorption, which varies across the submillimeter domain. This correction is fully described. The measured pre-eclipse brightness temperature is around 337 K in the 165-365 GHz range. This temperature slightly increases with frequency to reach ∼353 K at 950 GHz, according to previous broader band data. The magnitude of the temperature drop observed during the eclipse at 265 GHz (central frequency of the band covered) was about ∼70 K, in very good agreement with previous millimeter-wave measurements of other lunar eclipses. We detected, in addition, a clear frequency trend in the temperature drop that has been compared to a thermal and microwave emission model of the lunar regolith, with the result of a good match of the relative flux drop at different frequencies between model and measurements.  相似文献

A passive and multi-channel microwave sounder onboard the Chang’e-2orbiter has successfully acquired microwave observations of the lunar surface and subsurface structure. Compared with the Chang’e-1 orbiter, the Chang’e-2 orbiter obtained more accurate and comprehensive microwave brightness temperature data, which are helpful for further research. Since there is a close relationship between microwave brightness temperature data and some related properties of the lunar regolith, such as the thickness, temperature and dielectric constant, precise and high resolution brightness temperature data are necessary for such research. However, through the detection mechanism of the microwave sounder, the brightness temperature data acquired from the microwave sounder are weighted by the antenna radiation pattern, so the data are the convolution of the antenna radiation pattern with the lunar brightness temperature. In order to obtain the real lunar brightness temperature, a deconvolution method is needed. The aim of this paper is to solve the problem associated with performing deconvolution of the lunar brightness temperature. In this study, we introduce the maximum entropy method(MEM) to process the brightness temperature data and achieve excellent results. The paper mainly includes the following aspects: first, we introduce the principle of the MEM; second, through a series of simulations, the MEM has been verified as an efficient deconvolution method; and third, the MEM is used to process the Chang’e-2 microwave data and the results are significant.  相似文献

We present simulations of interferometers in Earth orbit and on the lunar surface to guide the design and optimization of space-based ultra-long wavelength missions, such as those pioneered by China’s Chang’e Program. We choose parameters and present simulations using simulated data to identify inter-dependencies and constraints on science and engineering parameters. A regolith model is created for the lunar surface array simulation, and the results show that the lunar regolith will have an undesirable effect on the observations. We estimate data transmission requirements, calculate sensitivities for both cases, and discuss the trade-off between brightness temperature sensitivity and angular resolution for the Earth orbit array case.  相似文献

This survey is a general overview of modern optical studies of the Moon and their diagnostic meaning. It includes three united parts: phase photometry, spectrophotometry, and polarimetry. The first one is devoted to the progress in the photometry of the Moon, which includes absolute albedo determination to refine the albedo scale (e.g., to connect lunar observations and the data of lunar sample measurements) and mapping the parameters of a lunar photometric function (e.g., the phase-angle ratios method) with the aim of making qualitative estimates of regolith structure variations. This part also includes observations of the lunar opposition effect as well as photogrammetry and photoclinometry techniques. In particular, available data show that because of the low albedo of the lunar surface, the coherent backscattering enhancement hardly influences the lunar opposition spike, with the exception of the brightest lunar areas measured in the NIR. The second part is devoted to chemical/mineral mapping of the Moon's surface using spectrophotometric measurements. This section also includes analyses related to the detection of water ice or hydroxyl, prognoses of maturity, and helium-3 abundance mapping. In particular, we examine the relationship between superficial OH/H2O compounds spectrally detected recently and bulk “water ice” found earlier by the Lunar Prospector GRS and LRO LEND, assuming that the compounds are delivered to cold traps (permanently shadowed regions) with electrostatically levitated dust saturated by solar wind hydrogen. Significant problems arise with the determination of TiO2 content, as the correlation between this parameter and the color ratio C(750/415 nm) is very non-linear and not universal for different composition types of the lunar surface; a promising way to resolve this problem is to use color ratios in the UV spectral range. The third part is devoted to mapping of polarization parameters of the lunar surface, which enable estimates of the average size of regolith particles and their optical inhomogeneity. This includes considerations of the Umov effect and results of spectropolarimetry, negative polarization imagery, and measurements of other polarimetric parameters, including the third Stokes parameter. Although these three research divisions have not been developed equally and the numbers of proper references are very different, we try to keep a balance between them, depicting a uniform picture. It should be emphasized that many results presented in this review can be applied to other atmosphereless celestial bodies as well.  相似文献

Measurements of the brightness and B-V color index of the leading and trailing hemispheres of Iapetus during the past five apparitions of Saturn are presented. The dependence of brightness on solar phase angle is determined for the two faces of the satellite. After correction for solar phase angle and distance effects, the brighter trailing hemisphere of Iapetus was found to be constant in brightness and color index throughout the interval covered by the observations. The brightness of the dark leading hemisphere, however, decreased by about 0.2 mag over the same period, and its B-V color index reddened by 0.05 mag. These changes are interpreted as evidence for the existence of a bright southern pole cap on Iapetus.  相似文献

Portions of the Moon were observed by the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photopolarimeter Experiment ( WUPPE ) on 1995 March 12, 14 and 17, and represent the first ultraviolet (UV) spectropolarimetric observations of the Moon. The polarimetric observations confirm that a change in the dominant scattering process occurs in the UV, changing from volume scattering in the near-UV to surface scattering in the far-UV. The data are investigated empirically. It is found that Umov's relationship holds when the polarization is perpendicular to the scattering plane. It is also found that the degree of polarization can be modelled by a phase-angle-dependent polarization modified by a wavelength-dependent depolarization factor. The scattering function for each observation is determined.  相似文献

The Viking Extended Mission has experienced two major dust storms that have changed the global photometric properties of Mars. Large quantities of atmospheric dust arising from the June 5, 1977, storm have been observed at very low phase angles to measure the opposition effect. These particles yield only a small increase in brightness at 0° phase angle with the least enhancement seen in violet light. The phase function is well modeled by nonspherical particles with a spectrally dependent single scattering albedo. It is doubtful, therefore, that atmospheric dust plays a significant role in the reported blue light brightness surge. Such particles as surface structure combined with a lunar photometric function could, however, produce the wavelength-dependent backscattering observed during the 1967 and 1969 oppositions under clearer conditions.  相似文献

On the basis of the data from ground-based polarimetric, photometric, and other observations, as well as from space measurements (Mariner 10), we survey the investigations of the properties and peculiarities of Mercury's regolith in detail. We also present the results of our own observations performed during three apparitions of the planet in 2000–2002. An analysis of the published data points to essentially more intensive maturation processes in the Hermean surface regolith compared to that on the lunar surface. In addition, the orbital characteristics of Mercury allow us to suppose that the intensity of its regolith maturation and, therefore, the optical properties of its surface can noticeably depend on the planetocentric longitude. Polarimetric observations of Mercury's surface (the planetocentric longitude range was 265°–330°) carried out in 2000–2002 with a 70-cm reflector actually detected a polarization degree varying with an amplitude of about 1.5%. To ascertain the nature of these variations, additional observations of Mercury in a maximally wide range of planetocentric longitudes of the viewed surface are required.  相似文献

We present the results of photometric observations of BL Lacertae at 1 μm performed during the strong outburst that occurred in the summer of 1997. Measurements were carried out using the F99 filter of the Arizona system. Simultaneous observations in the B V bands were made with other telescopes. Large and fast variations were observed on the night of August 2 when the brightness of BL Lacertae changed by ∼ 0.5 mag in about 2 h: the variation amplitude is greater at higher frequency. Some implications of these results for the origin of the fast variations are discussed. We also report the first F99 calibration for three reference stars in the BL Lac field.  相似文献

In the present work we give the results of photometric and polarimetric observations of the star SAO 124414 simultaneously in the BVR ranges of the spectrum. The observations were made over three years at Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. Strong variations in the degree of light polarization in all three spectral ranges were recorded while the star's brightness was constant during the observations. It is confirmed that the recorded polarization has a stellar character. An analysis of the polarimetric measurements did not reveal periodicity in the variations of the degree of polarization.  相似文献

HD93044 was observed electrophotometricaly on April 21, May 1, 2 and 4, 1991 at Xinglong Station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. Combining the data with Li Zhiping's data together and a period analysis was completed using a program which consists of a combination of Fourier transforms of prewhitened data and the multifrequency least squares of brightness residuals (LSR). Three pulsation frequencies (11.90809, 16.79553, 22.44827 cycles per day) with visual amplitudes between 0.0056 and 0.0203 mag were found. The solution fits the observations to +0.0071 mag which is equal to the mean square deviation of observations. The first frequency (11.90809 cycles per day) must be the right value of the fundamental frequency of HD93044.  相似文献

We report results of telescope polarimetric imaging of the Moon with a CCD LineScan Camera at large phase angles, near 88°. This allows measurements of the polarization degree with an absolute accuracy better than 0.3% and detection of features with polarization contrast as small as 0.1%. The measurements are carried out in two spectral bands centered near 0.65 and 0.42 μm. We suggest characterizing the lunar regolith with the parameter a(Pmax)A, where Pmax,A, and a are the degree of maximum polarization, albedo, and the parameter describing the linear regression of the correlation Pmax-A. The parameter bears significant information on the particle characteristic size and packing density of the lunar regolith. We also suggest characterizing the lunar regolith with color-ratio images obtained with a polarization filter at large phase angles. We here consider the color-ratios C||(0.65/0.42 μm) and C(0.65/0.42 μm). Using light scattering model calculations we show that the color-ratio images obtained with a polarization filter at large phase angles suggest a new tool to study the lunar surface. In particular, it turns out that the color-ratios C||(0.65/0.42 μm) and C(0.65/0.42 μm) are sensitive to somewhat different thicknesses of the surfaces of regolith particles. We consider the applicability of the Hubble Space Telescope, the Very Large Telescope (ESO), and a spacecraft on a lunar polar orbit for polarimetric observations of the lunar surface.  相似文献

The solar millimeter continuum between 1 and 20 mm is recalibrated using observations of the average lunar brightness temperature at the center of lunar disk and new Moon brightness temperatures. The solar data are placed on a common scale according to the average lunar brightness temperature distribution proposed by Linsky. A least-squares parabolic regression curve is proposed for the solar millimeter continuum. A small departure from this regression curve near 8 mm may indicate the existence of an absorption feature.Staff member, Laboratory Astrophysics Division, National Bureau of Standards.  相似文献
