Numerical modeling of extreme sea levels associated with tropical cyclones in the Indian seas has been confined to the northern part of the Bay of Bengal (north of Tamil Nadu). However, limited attempts have been made for modeling of surges along the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan coasts. Although, very rarely, cyclones form south of 10°N, there are some instances of severe cyclonic storms hitting these areas and causing widespread destruction to life and property. Keeping this in view, a suitable location-specific, high-resolution, numerical model has been developed for the prediction of storm surges in these regions with a grid resolution of 3 km. Using the model, numerical experiments are performed to simulate the storm surge associated with the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone, the 1978 Batticaloa cyclone, the 1992 Tuticorin cyclone, the 1993 Karaikal cyclone, and the 1994 Madras cyclone. During the years 1964, 1978, and 1992, the cyclones struck both Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coasts, while in 1993 and 1994, the cyclones struck only the Tamil Nadu coast. It is found that the computed sea surface elevations are in close agreement with the available observations/estimates.  相似文献

Satellite ocean-color imagery and field spectroradiometer observations are used to assess the bio-optical signatures of two mesoscale features, a cyclone C1 and an 18°-water anticyclone A4, in the Sargasso Sea. Field determinations of upper layer bio-optical properties, such as the diffuse attenuation coefficient and remote-sensing reflectance spectra, show little statistically significant variations with distance to the eddy center for either eddy. This contrasts field observations showing many-fold higher phytoplankton pigment biomass at depth (and for A4 higher primary production rates at depth) than is typical for this region. The cyclone C1 does show a significant decrease in the depth of the 1% photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) isolume with increasing distance from eddy center while the anticyclone A4 shows no coherent signal vs. distance. Vertical profiles of bio-optical properties show consistent patterns where subsurface maxima are displaced higher inside the core of the cyclone C1 than in the surrounding waters while the highest values of the diffuse attenuation coefficient at 443 nm are observed within the core of anticyclone A4. Satellite observations of near-surface bio-optical properties show signals consistent with eddy physical characteristics, although the magnitude of these variations is very small, barely detectable by typical field measurement protocols. Mean values of bio-optical properties are higher within the cyclone compared with its periphery but not for the anticyclone. For both eddies, significant inverse correlations are observed between time series of bio-optical properties and eddy center sea-level anomaly. Consistent response to wind speed is also noted: following strong wind events, bio-optical parameters are elevated inside the anticyclone and are reduced inside the cyclone. These observations demonstrate that a combination of physical processes, including vertical eddy uplift, eddy horizontal advection, and eddy-scale Ekman pumping, contribute to the bio-optical imprint of mesoscale eddies. The contributions of these forcing mechanisms change over the period of observation, illustrating the limitations of inferring eddy bio-optical dynamics from short-term, field observations. The present analyses provide insights into the potential as well as the drawbacks of bio-optical techniques for probing the biological and biogeochemical impacts of open-ocean eddies.  相似文献

通过分析福建省出现秋台年与无秋台年夏季几个物理因子的变化,得出如下结论(1)有秋台年夏季东亚500hPa高度距平场呈现“-+-”的分布特征,无秋台年东亚500hPa高度距平场呈“+-+”的分布.(2)有秋台年夏季副热带高压较活跃,北进南退的步伐较大,而无秋台年只在秋季的回跳速度快.(3)拉尼娜事件开始年份可能会出现秋台风,同时有秋台年夏、秋季海温距平分布是赤道中、东太平洋为负的海温距平,西、北太平洋为正海温距平,无秋台年份海温的分布形态与此刚好相反.  相似文献

由于热带海洋上观测资料的稀缺和热带气旋系统本身发生发展的复杂性,热带气旋生成机制的研究领域至今仍然存在很多未解之谜。半个多世纪以来,科学工作者们利用有限的船舶、探空仪、雷达、卫星、飞机等观测资料以及数值天气模式,对热带气旋生成的气候背景场、扰动源和触发机制做了大量研究。介绍了近50年来国内外热带气旋生成机制的主要研究成果,总结了该领域的研究进展及其存在的优势和不足,指出热带气旋生成机制研究中依然存在的问题,同时展望了该领域未来的发展方向。  相似文献

A case study on the cyclonic eddy generated by the tropical cyclone looping over the northern South China Sea (NSCS) is presented, using TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data and AVHRR sea surface temperature (SST) data.Three cases relating to the tropical cyclone events (Typhoon Kai-Tak in July 2000, Tropical Storm Russ in June 1994and Tropical Storm Maria in August-September 2000) over the NSCS have been analyzed. For each looping tropical cyclone case, the cyclonic eddy with an obvious sea level depression appears in the sea area where the tropical cyclone takes a loop form, and lasts for about 2 weeks with a slight variation in location. The cold core with the SST difference greater than 2 ℃ against its surrounding areas is also observed by the satellite-derived SST data.  相似文献

In this paper, using Holland's method, the effect of the horizontal structure of tropical cyclones on their motion is investigated. The "characteristic radius", r0 characterized as the horizontal structure of a tropical cyclone,in which m and p are the parameters of the vortex, has been found by the author. And then it has been shown that there is but one "characteristic radius" for each cyclone with horizontal structure. Two direct analytic solutions for the uniform and non-uniform basic flows in steady situations are presented with rc Results show that the change in the horizontal structure of the tropical cyclone itself will have obvious effect on the cyclone motion, on both its direction and speed. Results of drag coefficient(CD) from field observations and laboratory wave tank experiments indicate that the operational wave model can overestimate wind energy input under high wind conditions. The wind-wave interaction source term in WAVEWATCH Ⅲ has been modified to examine its behavior with tropical cyclone wind forcing. Using high resolution wind input,numerical experiments under idealized wind field and tropical cyclone Bonnie(1998) were designed to evaluate performance of the modified models. Both experiments indicate that the modified models with reduced CD significantly decrease wind energy input into the wave model and then simulate lower significant wave height(SWH) than the original model. However,the effects on spatial distribution of SWH,mean wavelength,mean wave direction,and directional wave spectra are insignificant. Due to the reduced wind energy input,the idealized experiment shows that the modified models simulate lower SWH than the original model in all four quadrants. The decrease in the front quadrants is significantly larger than that in the rear quadrants;it is larger under higher winds than lower winds. The realistic experiment on tropical cyclone Bonnie shows that the modified model with the various downward trends of CD in high winds creates a simulation that agrees best with scanning radar altimeter observations.  相似文献

利用美国国家环境预报中心发布的FNL资料、红外卫星云图资料和船测资料,对2016年10月17-19日某船舶在东南太平洋遭遇的一次温带气旋过程进行研究,以此为大洋航线上温带气旋预报保障能力提高积累经验。结果表明:(1)温带气旋A由绕极槽北伸切断发展而来,自西向东移动过程中在南太平洋大洋中部与另一气旋B合并加强对船舶航行造成影响;(2)气旋A初生阶段,大气低层旋转程度较强;成熟发展阶段在近地面、大气上层旋转程度较强;当气旋B初生发展时,气旋A中心附近自500 hPa以下为绝对涡度小值区,其上为绝对涡度大值区,绝对涡度垂直轴线向近B一侧倾斜;(3)槽后及气旋中心附近正涡度平流与槽前随高度增强的暖平流共同促使气旋发展。  相似文献

Based on the third-generation oceanic wave prediction model (WAVEWATCH Ⅲ) ,the third-generation nearshore wave calculation model (SWAN) and the mathematical tide, tidal current and cyclone current model, which have been improved, interconnected and expanded, a coupled model of offshore wave, tide and sea current under tropical cyclone surges in the South China Sea has been established. The coupled model is driven by the tropical cyclone field containing the background wind field. In order to test the hindcasting effect of the mathematical model, a comparison has been made between the calculated results and the observational results of waves of 15 cyclone cases, water levels and current velocities of the of 7 cyclones. The results of verification indicate that the calculated and observed results are basically identical.  相似文献

本文利用尽可能多的观测资料和WRF-3.4.1模式(Weather Research and Forecasting Model)对2012年1月19日至28日发生在西南印度洋上空的1次强热带气旋进行了研究,并分析其时空结构和发展机制。对该热带气旋的移动路径、强度及内部结构的数值模拟结果与实际符合较好。分析表明,感热和凝结潜热贯串于热带气旋发展的整个过程,其中感热对气旋发展的影响较弱,凝结潜热是气旋发展的主要能量来源,CISK机制可解释该热带气旋的发展过程。  相似文献

本文利用欧洲中期天气预报中心(European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts,ECMWF)提供的0.125(°)×0.125(°)的ERA-Interim再分析资料、美国国家航空航天局(National Aeronautics and Space Administration,NASA)提供的MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)可见光云图、气象卫星合作研究所(Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies,CIMSS)提供的GOES-EAST红外卫星云图等资料以及WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting)数值模式的模拟结果,对2003年3月北大西洋上一个爆发性气旋B“吞并”另一个气旋A后快速发展机制进行了分析。气旋A和B均生成于美国东部,气旋A于2003年3月5日06 UTC生成,气旋B于6日00 UTC生成,且比气旋A向东北方向移动得更快,7日18 UTC达到最大加深率3.27 hPa·h-1。在北大西洋中部地区,从8日00 UTC开始,气旋B吞并气旋A后形成气旋C,8日12 UTC气旋C中心气压达到最低值938.3 hPa。高空急流、低空水汽输送和潜热释放为气旋A和气旋B的快速发展提供了有利的环流背景场。气旋B吞并气旋A的过程经历三个阶段:前期阶段、吞并阶段、完成阶段。利用WRF模式模拟结果的分析表明,气旋A和B之间建立水汽输运通道,水汽从气旋A向气旋B输送。气旋B吞并气旋A后形成气旋C快速发展的主要原因是暖平流的作用。  相似文献

利用气象海洋数据资料和卫星遥感图片,分析研究了2005年第16号热带气旋"韦森特"(VICENTE)的特征,从最先的初始扰动到自身环流的分裂发展重组过程,以至当时周围相对应的大气环流,发现该热带气旋活动过程具有很多特性。对其移动过程进行的综合分析表明,只要存在合适距离等一定有利的条件,弱的两个涡旋之间完全可以发生强的作用力,高空辐散场的抽气作用对气旋的发展有极好的作用,所得的结论可对今后的预报提供一些启示和参考。  相似文献

A cyclone induced storm surge and flood forecasting system that has been developed for the northern Bay of Bengal is presented. The developed system includes a cyclone forecasting model that uses statistical models for forecasting of the cyclone track and maximum wind speed, and an analytical cyclone model for generation of cyclone wind and pressure fields. A data assimilation system has been developed that allows updating of the cyclone parameters based on air pressure and wind speed observations from surface meteorological stations. The forecasted air pressure and wind fields are used as input in a 2D hydrodynamic model for forecasting storm surge levels and associated flooding. An efficient uncertainty prediction procedure based on Harr's point estimation method has been implemented as part of the forecasting system for prediction of the uncertainties of the forecasted storm surge levels and inundation areas caused by the uncertainties in the cyclone track and wind speed forecasts. The developed system is applied on a severe cyclone that hit Bangladesh in April 1991. The simulated storm surge and associated flooding are highly sensitive to the cyclone data. The cyclone data assimilation system provides a more accurate cyclone track when the cyclone approaches the coastline, which results in a significant improvement of the storm surge and flood predictions. Application of the uncertainty prediction procedure shows that the large uncertainties of the cyclone track and intensity forecasts result in large uncertainties of the forecasted storm surge levels and flood extend. The forecasting system shows very good forecasting capabilities up to 24 h before the actual landfall.  相似文献

本文利用1951~1987年286个网格点太平洋月平均海温场及500hPa月平均位势高度场,分析了春季西北太平洋(不含南海)热带气旋与海温场和大气环流的关系。结果表明:前期太平洋海温场与春季热带气旋生成数有显著的相关,并以前一年夏季和前期冬季更为明显。影响春季热带气旋生成的太平洋海温场主要有两个关键区,一个位于赤道东太平洋,为负相关:一个位于北太平洋中部,为正相关。文中还从海温对大气环流影响的角度出发,分析了春季热带气旋活动特多年与特少年前期及同期500hPa大气环流的特征及两者之间的差异。最后利用逐步回归方法作了春季西北太平洋热带气旋长期趋势预报。  相似文献

利用1989~2000年现场观测的气象资料,特别是自1997年以来在南极考察船上接收的NOAA卫星极轨高分辨的卫星云图,研究了普里兹湾气旋的生消发展;提出了夏季绕极气旋进入普里兹湾内也会发展加强,在湾内东风带里也能生成气旋的新观点,修正了普里兹湾仅是气旋墓地的不全面说法,从而进一步完善了南极西风带绕极气旋和东风带上气旋生消发展的理论;研究了普里兹湾冰-气-海相互作用的机理,解释了气旋发生、发展的物理过程.用整体动力学输送法计算了进入普里兹湾980205号绕极气旋爆发性发展的能量交换,指出气旋在超过冰坝进入冰间湖可以获得巨大的热量,使气旋迅速发展成为具有南极特色的强风暴,风力达12级以上,平均风速为38m/s;瞬时最大风速达100m/s.  相似文献

In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the impact of salinity stratification on the SST during the tropical cyclone (TC) passage. In this context, a severe post monsoon cyclone, Sidr, (Category 4) that developed over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal (BoB) during 11–16 November, 2007 was chosen as a case study. Pre-existence of a thick barrier layer (BL), temperature inversions and a higher effective oceanic layer for cyclogenesis (EOLC) were noticed along the path of the Sidr cyclone. The analysis of available Argo floats along the Sidr cyclone track also revealed less cooling during as well as after its passage as was reported from satellite derived SST. The role of BL on Sidr induced sea surface cooling was investigated using a diagnostic mixed layer model. Model results also depict the reduced sea surface cooling during the passage of Sidr. This is attributed to the presence of BL which results in the inhibition of the entrainment of cool thermocline water into the shallow mixed layer. Climatological as well as in situ observations of tropical cyclone heat potential (TCHP) and EOLC shows that the Sidr cyclone propagated towards the regions of higher EOLC.  相似文献

热带气旋灾害是最严重的自然灾害之一,其影响程度主要取决于气旋的中心位置和强度。提高热带气旋中心位置及强度监测水平对于改进热带气旋分析预报精度、减少热带气旋的灾害影响具有重要意义。本文以HY-2B散射计为例,分析了散射计风场散度和旋度的分布特征,发现气旋中心附近风场的散度或旋度具有显著的分布规律,由此提出了一种新的气旋中心定位方法,并与传统的直接定位法进行比较研究。在此基础上,进一步提出了热带气旋风圈大小估计的方法,用于评估气旋的强度。最后,利用台风“范斯高”和“博罗依”的遥感数据对文中的方法进行验证,结果表明,使用新方法定位的气旋中心位置与最佳路径之间的差异小于20 km,散射计17 m/s风圈大小的变化一定程度上反映了气旋的发展规律。  相似文献

南海是热带气旋活动较为频繁的地区之一。该地区因其独特的地理环境和复杂的热带大气环流系统,在热带气旋预报工作上存在一定的困难。本文在分析一些气象图表资料的基础上,对2002年第20号热带风暴(米克拉)的形成、发展及消亡进行了探讨和研究。主要从形成的背景环流,气旋的结构等方面入手,总结出一些该气旋所具备韵特有流场,从而为以后的南海自生热带气旋预报工作积累一定经验。  相似文献
