We present 0.15-arcsec (25-pc) resolution MERLIN observations of neutral hydrogen absorption detected towards the nuclear region of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5929. Absorption is detected only towards the north-eastern radio component with a column density of (6.5 ± 0.6) × 1021 cm−2. Based on comparison with an HST WFPC2 continuum image, we propose that the absorption is caused by a 1.5-arcsec structure of neutral gas and dust offset 0.3 arcsec south-east of the nucleus and running NE–SW. A separate cloud of dust is apparent 1.5 arcsec to the south-west of the nucleus in the HST image. A comparison of the centroid velocity (2358 ± 5 km s−1) and full width at half-maximum (43 ± 6 km s−1) of the absorbing gas with previous [O  III ] observations suggests that both the neutral and ionized gas are undergoing galactic rotation towards the observer in the north-east and away from the observer in the south-west. The main structure is consistent with an inclined ring of gas and dust encircling the active galactic nucleus (AGN); alternatively it may be a bar or inner spiral arm. We do not detect neutral hydrogen absorption or dust obscuration against the radio nucleus (column density < 3.1 × 1021 cm−2) expected by a torus of neutral gas and dust in unified models of AGNs for a type 2 Seyfert galaxy.  相似文献

We analyse new integral-field spectroscopy of the inner region (central 2.5 kpc) of the spiral galaxy NGC 4321 to study the peculiar kinematics of this region. Fourier analysis of the velocity residuals obtained by subtracting an axisymmetric rotation model from the Hα velocity field indicates that the distortions are global features generated by an   m = 2  perturbation of the gravitational potential which can be explained by the nuclear bar. This bar has been previously observed in the near-infrared but not in the optical continuum dominated by star formation. We detect the optical counterpart of this bar in the 2D distribution of the old stellar population (inferred from the equivalent width map of the stellar absorption lines). We apply the Tremaine–Weinberg method to the stellar velocity field to calculate the pattern speed of the inner bar, obtaining a value of  Ωb= 160 ± 70 km s−1 kpc−1  . This value is considerably larger than the one obtained when a simple bar model is considered. However, the uncertainties in the pattern speed determination prevent us from giving support to alternative scenarios.  相似文献

NGC 3783 is a nearby SBa, type 1 Seyfert galaxy. We present H  i and radio continuum images of the galaxy made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We find that NGC 3783 has an H  i mass of 8.4×109 M, an H  i diameter of 1.9 D 0 ( D 0=37 kpc for h =0.5), and a nuclear depression in the H  i surface density. The H  i rotation curve is dominated by differential rotation, with little evidence of warping. The rotation curve suggests a mass-to-light ratio M L B =7.2 and a bar-pattern speed of 19±7 km s−1 kpc−1. The total mass of gas in the inner 50 arcsec is ≳10 per cent of the dynamical mass, and consistent with models that require significant gas content to fuel the Seyfert nucleus. There is no evidence that the nuclear activity in NGC 3783 is being stimulated by an interaction or merger: it may be a self-generated, perhaps bar-driven, process.  相似文献

We present an analysis of 3D spectra of Mrk 533, observed with the integral-field spectrograph MultiPupil Fiber Spectrograph (MPFS) and using the Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) 6-m telescope. We found emissions of gas from the active type 2 Seyfert nucleus in the centre and also from the H  ii regions in a spiral structure and a circumnuclear region. The gas kinematics shows regular non-circular motions in the wide range of galactocentric distances from 500 pc up to 15 kpc. The maps of inward and outward radial motions of the ionized gas were constructed. We found that the narrow-line region (NLR) is composed of at least two (probably three) kinematically separated regions. We detect a stratification in the NLR of Mrk 533 with the outflow velocity ranging from 20–50 km s−1 to 600–700 km s−1, respectively, on the radial distances of ∼2.5 and ∼1.5 kpc. The maximal outflow velocity comes from the nucleus and corresponds to the position of the observed radio structure, which is assumed to be created in an approaching jet. We suggest that these ionized gas outflows are triggered by the radio jet intrusion in an ambient medium.  相似文献

A detailed dynamical analysis of the nearby rich Norma cluster (ACO 3627) is presented. From radial velocities of 296 cluster members, we find a mean velocity of 4871 ± 54 km s−1 and a velocity dispersion of 925 km s−1. The mean velocity of the E/S0 population (4979 ± 85 km s−1) is offset with respect to that of the S/Irr population (4812 ± 70 km s−1) by  Δ v = 164 km s−1  in the cluster rest frame. This offset increases towards the core of the cluster. The E/S0 population is free of any detectable substructure and appears relaxed. Its shape is clearly elongated with a position angle that is aligned along the dominant large-scale structures in this region, the so-called Norma wall. The central cD galaxy has a very large peculiar velocity of 561 km s−1 which is most probably related to an ongoing merger at the core of the cluster. The spiral/irregular galaxies reveal a large amount of substructure; two dynamically distinct subgroups within the overall spiral population have been identified, located along the Norma wall elongation. The dynamical mass of the Norma cluster within its Abell radius is  1–1.1 × 1015  h −173 M  . One of the cluster members, the spiral galaxy WKK 6176 which recently was observed to have a 70 kpc X-ray tail, reveals numerous striking low-brightness filaments pointing away from the cluster centre suggesting strong interaction with the intracluster medium.  相似文献

We have studied the velocity field of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 86 (NGC 2537) using data provided by 14 long-slit optical spectra obtained in 10 different orientations and positions. This kinematical information is complemented with narrow-band ([O  iii ]5007 Å and H α ) and broad-band ( B , V , Gunn r and K ) imaging. The analysis of the galaxy global velocity field suggests that the ionized gas could be distributed in a rotating inclined disc, with projected central angular velocity of Ω=34 km s−1 kpc−1. The comparison between the stellar, H  i and modelled dark matter density profile indicates that the total mass within its optical radius is dominated by the stellar component. Peculiarities observed in its velocity field can be explained by irregularities in the ionized gas distribution or local motions induced by star formation.
Kinematical evidences for two expanding bubbles, Mrk 86–B and Mrk 86–C, are given. They show expanding velocities of 34 and 17 km s−1, H α luminosities of 3×1038 and 1.7×1039 erg s−1, and physical radii of 374 and 120 pc, respectively. The change in the [S  ii ]/H α , [N  ii ]/H α , [O  ii ]/[O  iii ] and [O  iii ]/H β line ratios with the distance to the bubble precursor suggests a diminution in the ionization parameter and, in the case of Mrk 86–B, an enhancement of the shock-excited gas emission. The optical–near-infrared colours of the bubble precursors are characteristic of low‐metallicity star‐forming regions (∼0.2 Z) with burst strengths of about 1 per cent in mass.  相似文献

Redshifts of several galaxies thought to be associated with NGC 326 are determined. The results confirm the presence of a cluster and find a mean redshift of     and a line-of-sight velocity dispersion σ z =599 (+230,−110) km s−1. The velocity dispersion and previously measured X-ray gas temperature of kT ≃1.9 keV are consistent with the cluster σ z kT relation, and NGC 326 is seen to be a slowly moving member of the cluster.  相似文献

A catalogue of ionized gas velocity fields for a sample of 30 spiral and irregular galaxies of the Virgo cluster has been obtained by using 3D optical data. The aim of this survey is to study the influence of high-density environments on the gaseous kinematics of local cluster galaxies. Observations of the Hα line by means of Fabry–Perot interferometry have been performed at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, European Southern Observatory 3.6-m telescope, Observatoire de Haute-Provence 1.93-m telescope and Observatoire du mont Mégantic telescope at angular and spectral samplings from 0.4 to 1.6 arcsec and 7 to 16 km s−1. A recently developed, automatic and adaptive spatial binning technique is used to reach a nearly constant signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) over the whole field of view, allowing us to keep a high spatial resolution in high-S/N regions and extend the detection of signal in low-S/N regions. This paper is part of a series and presents the integrated emission-line and velocity maps of the galaxies. Both Hα morphologies and kinematics exhibit signs of perturbations in the form of, for example, external filaments, inner and nuclear spiral- and ring-like structures, inner kinematical twists, kinematical decoupling of a nuclear spiral, streaming motions along spiral arms and misalignment between kinematical and photometric orientation axes.  相似文献

We present kinematic parameters and absorption line strengths for three brightest cluster galaxies, NGC 6166, 6173 and 6086. We find that NGC 6166 has a velocity dispersion profile which rises beyond 20 arcsec from the nucleus, with a halo velocity dispersion in excess of 400 km s−1. All three galaxies show a positive and constant h 4 Hermite moment. The rising velocity dispersion profile in NGC 6166 thus indicates an increasing mass-to-light ratio. Rotation is low in all three galaxies, and NGC 6173 and 6086 show possible kinematically decoupled cores. All three galaxies have Mg2 gradients similar to those found in normal bright ellipticals, which are not steep enough to support simple dissipative collapse models, but these could be accompanied by dissipationless mergers which would tend to dilute the abundance gradients. The [Mg/Fe] ratios in NGC 6166 and 6086 are higher than that found in NGC 6173, and if NGC 6173 is typical of normal bright ellipticals, this suggests that cDs cannot form from late mergers of normal galaxies.  相似文献

The pattern speed is a defining parameter of any barred galaxy. A large number of model-dependent techniques have therefore been developed to derive the pattern speed. However, the only model-independent technique for measuring this quantity – the Tremaine–Weinberg method – has hitherto been applied to just one case, the SB0 galaxy NGC 936. In this paper, we apply the technique to a second system, the SBa galaxy NGC 4596. The resulting estimate for the pattern speed is Ωp=52±13 km s−1 kpc−1. This result is corroborated by a spectrum obtained along the major axis of the bar in this system. The corotation radius associated with this pattern speed lies just beyond the end of the bar indicating a fast bar. Combining the bar major-axis spectra with data obtained from a Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 image, we also find strong evidence for a nuclear disc.  相似文献

We present the results of a new H i , optical, and Hα interferometric study of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 157. Our combined C- and D-array observations with the VLA show a large-scale, ring-like structure in the neutral hydrogen underlying the optical disc, together with an extended, low surface density component going out to nearly twice the Holmberg radius. Beginning just inside the edge of the star-forming disc, the line of nodes in the gas disc commences a 60° warp, while at the same time, the rotation velocity drops by almost half its peak value of 200 km s−1, before levelling off again in the outer parts. While a flat rotation curve in NGC 157 cannot be ruled out, supportive evidence for an abrupt decline comes from the ionized gas kinematics, the optical surface photometry, and the global H i profile. A standard 'maximum-disc' mass model predicts comparable amounts of dark and luminous matter within NGC 157. Alternatively, a model employing a disc truncated at 2 disc scalelengths could equally well account for the unusual form of the rotation curve in NGC 157.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of a model for the late-type barred-spiral galaxy NGC 3359 by using both observational and numerical techniques. The results of our modelling are compared with photometric and kinematical data. The potential used is estimated directly from observations of the galaxy. It describes with a single potential function, a barred-spiral system with an extended spiral structure. Thus, the study of the dynamics in this potential has an interest by itself. We apply orbital theory and response models for the study of the stellar component, and smoothed particle hydrodynamics for modelling the gas. In particular, we examine the pattern speed of the system and the orbital character (chaotic or ordered) of the spiral arms. We conclude that the spiral pattern rotates slowly, in the sense that its corotation is close to or even beyond the end of the arms. Although a single, slow pattern speed could, under certain assumptions, characterize the whole disc, the comparison with the observational data indicates that probably the bar and the spirals have different angular velocities. In our two pattern speeds model, the best fit is obtained with a bar ending close to its 4:1 resonance and a more slowly rotating spiral. Assuming an 11 Mpc distance to the galaxy, a match of our models with the observed data indicates a pattern speed of about  39 km s−1 kpc−1  for the bar and about  15 km s−1 kpc−1  for the spiral. We do not find any indication for a chaotic character of the arms in this barred-spiral system. The flow in the region of the spirals can best be described as a regular 'precessing-ellipses flow'.  相似文献

We present high-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 24 solar-type stars in the young (15–40 Myr), open cluster NGC 2547. We use our spectra to confirm cluster membership in 23 of these stars, to determine projected equatorial velocities and chromospheric activity, and to search for the presence of accretion discs. We find examples of both fast ( v e sin  i >50 km s−1) and slow ( v e sin  i <10 km s−1) rotators, but no evidence for active accretion in any of the sample. The distribution of projected rotation velocities is indistinguishable from the slightly older IC 2391 and IC 2602 clusters, implying similar initial angular momentum distributions and circumstellar disc lifetimes. The presence of very slow rotators indicates either that long (10–40 Myr) disc lifetimes or internal differential rotation are needed, or that NGC 2547 (and IC 2391/2602) were born with more slowly rotating stars than are presently seen in even younger clusters and associations. The solar-type stars in NGC 2547 follow a similar rotation–activity relationship to that seen in older clusters. X-ray activity increases until a saturation level is reached for v e sin  i >15–20 km s−1. We are unable to explain why this saturation level, of log( L x L bol)≃−3.3, is a factor of 2 lower than in other clusters, but rule out anomalously slow rotation rates or uncertainties in X-ray flux calculations.  相似文献

We present VLA A-array 21-cm atomic hydrogen (H  i ) absorption observed against the central region of the starburst galaxy M82 with an angular resolution of ∼1.3 arcsec (≃20 pc). These observations, together with MERLIN H  i absorption measurements, are compared with the molecular (CO) and ionized ([Ne  ii ]) gas distributions and are used to constrain the dynamics and structure of the ionized, neutral and molecular gas in this starburst.
A position–velocity diagram of the H  i distribution reveals an unusual 'hole' feature which, when previously observed in CO, has been interpreted as an expanding superbubble contained within a ring of gas in solid body rotation. However, we interpret this feature as a signature of a nearly edge-on barred galaxy. In addition, we note that the CO, H  i and [Ne  ii ] position–velocity diagrams reveal two main velocity gradients, and we interpret these as gas moving on x1- and x2-orbits within a bar potential. We find the best fit to the data to be produced using a bar potential with a flat rotation curve velocity v b=140 km s−1 and a total length of 1 kpc, a non-axisymmetry parameter q =0.9, an angular velocity of the bar Ωb=217 km s−1 arcsec−1, a core radius R c=25 pc, an inclination angle i =80° and a projected angle between the bar and the major axis of the galaxy φ '=4°. We also discuss the orientation of the disc and bar in M82.  相似文献

We show how the continuity equation can be used to determine pattern speeds in the Milky Way Galaxy (MWG). This method, first discussed by Tremaine & Weinberg in the context of external galaxies, requires projected positions, ( l , b ), and line-of-sight velocities for a spatially complete sample of relaxed tracers. If the local standard of rest (LSR) has a zero velocity in the radial direction ( u LSR), then the quantity that is measured is  Δ V ≡Ωp R 0- V LSR  , where Ωp is the pattern speed of the non-axisymmetric feature, R 0 is the distance of the Sun from the Galactic centre and V LSR is the tangential motion of the LSR, including the circular velocity. We use simple models to assess the reliability of the method for measuring a single, constant pattern speed of either a bar or spiral in the inner MWG. We then apply the method to the OH/IR stars in the ATCA/VLA OH 1612-MHz survey of Sevenster et al., finding  Δ V =252±41 km s-1,  if   u LSR=0  . Assuming further that   R 0=8 kpc  and   V LSR=220 km s-1,  this gives  Ωp=59±5 km s-1 kpc-1  with a possible systematic error of perhaps 10 km s−1 kpc−1. The non-axisymmetric feature for which we measure this pattern speed must be in the disc of the MWG.  相似文献

We have used the Very Large Array (VLA) to search for the H92α radio recombination line (RRL) in four starburst galaxies. In NGC 660, the line was detected over a 17Å‐8 arcsec2 region near its starburst nucleus. The line and continuum emission indicate that the RRL-emitting gas is most likely in the form of a cluster of H ii regions with a small filling factor. Using a simple model we find that the total ionized mass in the nuclear region is in the range 2–8Å‐104 M⊙ and the rate of production of UV photons N Lyc∼1–3Å‐1053 s−1. The ratio of H92α and Brγ line intensities in NGC 660 indicates that extinction is significant even at λ=2 μm. The velocity field of the ionized gas is consistent with a rotating disc with an average velocity gradient of ∼15 km s−1 arcsec−1. The dynamical mass within the central 500 pc is ∼4Å‐108 M⊙ and may be about ∼6Å‐107 M⊙ within the central 120 pc. No line was detected in the other galaxies (NGC 520, NGC 1614 and NGC 6946) to a 3σ limit of 300 μJy. In the starburst galaxies in which RRLs have been detected, we find that there is a rough correlation between the integrated H92α line flux density and both the total far-infrared flux density and the radio continuum emission from the central region.  相似文献

We report the detection of a bisymmetric nuclear spiral structure in the spiral galaxy NGC 5248.The two red spiral arms can be followed for about 3 arcsec, before they appear to end inside the radius of the circumnuclear starburst `ring' at about 5.5 arcsec or 400 pc distance from the nucleus. We combine our near-infrared Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope adaptive optics images with traditional near-infrared and optical images and show that spiral structure is present in this galaxy at spatial scales reaching from a hundred parsecs to 15 kpc. Comparison with a Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet image shows how the starburst ring is related to the nuclear spiral structure. We also show a two-dimensional Hα velocity field that reveals no evidence for systematic streaming motions near the nuclear spiral or the starburst ring, nor for a rapidly rising rotation curve. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We study the pattern speed of the bar in NGC 7479 by comparing observations with numerical simulations of gas flow in a two-dimensional gravitational potential, derived from observations. The best agreement between the observations and the modelling is achieved for the fast bar pattern speed of 27 km s−1 kpc−1, when the corotation radius is at 50 arcsec, i.e. 1.1 times the radial length of the bar. This result is supported by the gas and dust lane morphologies, star formation distribution, projected velocity field and overall morphology. We find that star formation is most likely to be triggered close to the large-scale shocks and dust lanes in the bar. The net gas inflow rate in the simulations at 1-kpc radius is 4–6 M⊙ yr−1 at intermediate times.  相似文献

We present optical and near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the optical Einstein ring 0047 – 2808. We detect both [O III ] lines λλ4959, 5007 near ∼ 2.3 μm, confirming the redshift of the lensed source as z  = 3.595. The Lyα line is redshifted relative to the [O III ] line by 140 ± 20 km s−1. Similar velocity shifts have been seen in nearby starburst galaxies. The [O III ] line is very narrow, 130 km s−1 FWHM. If the ring is the image of the centre of a galaxy, the one-dimensional stellar velocity dispersion σ = 55 km s−1 is considerably smaller than the value predicted by Baugh et al. for the somewhat brighter Lyman-break galaxies. The Lyα line is significantly broader than the [O III ] line, probably due to resonant scattering. The stellar central velocity dispersion of the early-type deflector galaxy at z  = 0.485 is 250 ± 30 km s−1. This value is in good agreement both with the value predicted from the radius of the Einstein ring (and a singular isothermal sphere model for the deflector), and with the value estimated from the D n −σ relation.  相似文献

We propose a model for the source of the X-ray background (XRB) in which low-luminosity active nuclei ( L  ∼ 1043 erg s−1) are obscured ( N  ∼ 1023 cm−2) by nuclear starbursts within the inner ∼ 100 pc. The obscuring material covers most of the sky as seen from the central source, rather than being distributed in a toroidal structure, and hardens the averaged X-ray spectrum by photoelectric absorption. The gas is turbulent with velocity dispersion ∼ few × 100 km s−1 and cloud–cloud collisions lead to copious star formation. Although supernovae tend to produce outflows, most of the gas is trapped in the gravity field of the star-forming cluster itself and the central black hole. A hot ( T  ∼ 106 − 107 K) virialized phase of this gas, comprising a few per cent of the total obscuring material, feeds the central engine of ∼ 107 M⊙ through Bondi accretion, at a sub-Eddington rate appropriate for the luminosity of these objects. If starburst-obscured objects give rise to the residual XRB, then only 10 per cent of the accretion in active galaxies occurs close to the Eddington limit in unabsorbed objects.  相似文献
