Energy distributions of the thermal electrons in the ionospheric plasma were measured on 16 January 1974 and 16 September 1976 by two Japanese rockets, K-9M-45 and K-9M-55 respectively near the focus of Sq current vortex. The main effort was to investigate the energy state of the thermal electrons in a localized hot electron layer which occurs at a height of around 105 km in winter. The results obtained on 16 January 1974 showed that the thermal electrons in the hot electron layer had not a pure Maxwell distribution. While on 16 September 1976, the energy distribution of the electrons was found to be almost Maxwellian in the dynamo region as well as the F-region.  相似文献

The thermal response of the Earth's ionospheric plasma is calculated for various suddenly applied electron and ion heat sources. The time-dependent coupled electron and ion energy equations are solved by a semi-automatic computational scheme that employs Newton's method for coupled vector systems of non-linear parabolic (second order) partial differential equations in one spatial dimension. First, the electron and composite ion energy equations along a geomagnetic field line are solved with respect to a variety of ionospheric heat sources that include: thermal conduction in the daytime ionosphere; heating by electric fields acting perpendicular to the geomagnetic field line; and heating within a stable auroral red are (SAR-arc). The energy equations are then extended to resolve differential temperature profiles, first for two separate ion species (H+, O+) and then for four separate ion species (H+, He+, N+, O+) in addition to the electron temperature. The electron and individual ion temperatures are calculated for conditions within a night-time SAR-arc excited by heat flowing from the magnetosphere into the ionosphere, and also for typical midlatitude daytime ionospheric conditions. It is shown that in the lower ionosphere all ion species have the same temperature; however, in the topside ionosphere above about 400 km, ion species can display differential temperatures depending upon the balance between thermal conduction, heating by collision with electrons, cooling by collisions with the neutrals, and energy transfer by inter-ion collisions. Both the time evolution and steady-state distribution of such ion temperature differentials are discussed. The results show that below 300km both the electrons and ions respond rapidly (<30s) to variations in direct thermal forcing. Above 600 km the electrons and ions display quite different times to reach steady state, depending on the electron density: when the electron density is low the electrons reach steady state temperatures in 30 s, but typically require 700 s when the density is high; the ions, on the other hand, reach steady state in 700 s when the density is high, and 1500–2500 s when the density is low. Between 300 and 600 km, a variety of thermal structures can exist, depending upon the electron density and the type of thermal forcing; however steady state is generally reached in 200–1000 s.  相似文献

The POLAR 5 sounding rocket, launched from Andøya, Norway, on February 1, 1976, was of the “mother-daughter” configuration.A rocket-borne electron accelerator, mounted on the “daughter,” produced a pulsed electron beam with a maximum current of 130 mA and electron energies up to 10 kev.Using a photometer the luminescence at 391.4nm produced by electrons colliding with ambient nitrogen molecules was studied. The observed light at 391.4 nm consisted of low background, with occasional flashes due to the natural auroral excitations, and intense sparkles when the electron beam was emitted.Below 130 km the light observed during beam injection can be explained by excitations of ambient N2 due to high energy beam electrons. In the altitude range from 150 km to apogee at 220 km, the observed light level during beam emission is fairly constant and much larger than that produced by the high energy beam electrons. A possible source of this light is the excitation of ambient N2 by an enhanced population of low energy electrons, created by the presence of a beam plasma discharge in the vicinity of the “daughter” payload.  相似文献

Calculations are presented of energy spectra and angular and spatial distributions of electron fluxes in the ionosphere resulting from precipitation ofmonoenergetic (E = 25, 50 and 100 eV) electrons. The incident electrons are assumed to be isotropic over the downward direction. It is found that the resulting steady-state electron fluxes above ca. 300 km are highly anisotropic, and that the pitch angle distribution is energy dependent. About 15 per cent of the incident electrons are backscattered elastically to the protonosphere. A much larger number of electrons escape after they have deposited a part of their energy in the atmosphere. The mean energy of the escaping electrons is about half that of the incident electrons. About 50% of the incident energy is absorbed in the atmosphere, the remainder being returned to the protonosphere. The rate of absorption of energy is a maximum at heights between 300 and 400 km. Most of the energy is absorbed in ionization and excitation of atomic oxygen. An appreciable amount of energy is, however, absorbed as heat by the ambient electron gas. Altitude profiles are presented of the rates of ionization, excitation, and electron heating caused by soft electron precipitation.  相似文献

Data on the thermal structure of the nightside middle atmosphere of Venus, from 84 to 137 km altitude, have been obtained from analysis of deceleration measurements from the third Pioneer Venus small probe, the night probe, which entered the atmosphere near the midnight meridian at 27°S latitude. Comparison of the midnight sounding with the morning sounding at 31°S latitude indicates that the temperature structure is essentially diurnally invariant up to 100 km, above which the nightside structure diverges sharply from the dayside toward lower temperatures. Very large diurnal pressure differences develop above 100 km with dayside pressure ten times that on the nightside at 126 km altitude. This has major implications for upper atmospheric dynamics. The data are compared with the measurements of G. M. Keating, J. Y. Nicholson, and L. R. Lake (1980, J. Geophys. Res., 85, 7941–7956) above 140 km with theoretical thermal structure models of Dickinson, and with data obtained by Russian Venera spacecraft below 100 km. Midnight temperatures are ~ 130°K, somewhat warmer than those reported by Keating et al.  相似文献

The thermal balance of the plasma in the night-time mid-latitude F2-region is examined using solutions of the steady-state O+ and electron heat balance equations. The required concentrations and field-aligned velocities are obtained from a simultaneous solution of the time-dependent O+ continuity and momentum equations. The results demonstrate the systematic trend for the O+ temperature to be 10–20 K greater than the electron temperature during the night at around 300 km, as observed at St. Santin by Bauer and Mazaudier. It is shown that frictional heating between the O+ and neutral gases is the cause of the O+ temperature being greater than the electron temperature; the greater the importance of frictional heating in the thermal balance the greater is the difference in the O+ and electron temperatures. A study is made of the roles played in the thermal balance of the plasma by the thermal conductivity of the O+ and electron gases; collisional heat transfer between O+ electrons and neutrals; frictional heating between the O+ and neutral gases; and advection and convection due to field-aligned O+ and electron motions. The results of the study show that, at around 300 km, electron cooling by excitation of the fine structure of the ground state of atomic oxygen plays a major role in the thermal balance of the electrons and, since the temperature of the ions is little affected by this electron cooling process, in determining the difference between the ion and electron temperatures.  相似文献

Results of measurements of the energy distribution of thermal electrons below 1 eV in a midlatitude upper atmosphere are presented and compared with some recent measurements at other places. Measurements are based on the Druyvesteyn method using Langmuir probes. In the periods without solar light, distribution does not depart much from Maxwellian above 0.3 eV. Below 0.2 eV, depletion and sometimes double humps are seen. In the periods with solar light, bumps are sometimes observed on the high energy tail at altitudes between 100 and 160 km. Energy distribution in the F layer above 180 km fits the Maxwellian distribution rather well. The reason for the appearance of such non-thermal electrons at lower altitudes may be due to super-elastic collisions with vibrationally excited nitrogens.  相似文献

The thermal balance of the plasma in the day-time equatorial F region is examined. Steady-state solutions of electron and ion temperatures are obtained, assuming the ions are O+ and H+. The theoretical concentrations of O+ and H+ and the field-aligned velocity were obtained following Moffett and Hanson (1973), while theoretical photoelectron heating rates of the electron gas were taken from Swartz et al. (1975).The results demonstrate the gross features in the electron and ion temperatures as observed at the Jicamarca Observatory and in the ion temperatures observed on the OGO-6 satellite. The rapid increase in electron temperature above 500 km at the magnetic equator is due to heating by photoelectrons created at higher latitudes and travelling up along the field lines. The rapid increase in ion temperature is due to good thermal contact with the electrons rather than the neutrals. It is shown that field-aligned interhemispheric thermal plasma flows appreciably affect these temperatures, and that, with a net plasma flow from the summer hemisphere to the winter hemisphere, the temperatures are higher in the winter hemisphere. These effects are related to the character of the ion temperature minimum observed by OGO-6 near the magnetic equator.  相似文献

The discovery of large volcanic eruptions on Io suggests that Io is one of the most geologically active planetary bodies. The energy source of this geologic activity is believed to be tidal heating induced by Jupiter. A number of thermal history calculations were done to investigate the effect of tidal heating on the thermal history of Io taking into account solid state convection and advective heat transfer. These simulations show that the total tidal heating energy in Io is almost equal to the advectively transferred heat, indicating that the observed heat flow from Io is nearly equal to the total tidal heating energy. Since total tidal heating energy is dependent on the radius of the liquid mantle and the internal dissipation factor (Q), the radius of the liquid mantle can be estimated for a given value of Q. Some reasonable thermal history models of Io were obtained using a model with Q ≈ 25–50 in which the magma source of Ionian volcanism is at a depth of 100–300 km. The models satisfy the heat flow data and the existence of a thick lithosphere. Using a model with Q = 25 and L = 300 km (thickness of the advective region) as the standard model (model II), we then studied the effect of convective heat transfer and the initial temperature distribution on the Ionian thermal history. In these calculations, the other parameters are the same as in the standard model (model II). These calculations show that although the temperature distribution in the central region reflects the difference in the efficiency of convective heat transfer and initial temperature distribution, the temperature distribution in the outer region does not changes appreciably.  相似文献

This paper examines the role played by the high energy tail of the electron distribution function on Langmuir probe characteristics. A model is developed to derive the mean energy and the density of the hyperthermal electrons from probe characteristics for two ionospheric rocket flights involving different plasma conditions. The hyperthermal electrons are shown to influence the electron temperature measurement even if they constitute only a small fraction of the total electron concentration. The influence of the geomagnetic field, the collisions and the velocity of the vehicle on the probe data are also examined.  相似文献

A gridded spherical electrostatic analyzer aboard Injun 5 has been used to measure fluxes of thermal and hyperthermal electrons at subauroral latitudes in the midnight sector of the northern ionosphere between altitudes of 2500 and 850 km. Due to the offset between the geomagnetic and geographic poles hyperthermal fluxes, consisting of energetic photoelectrons that have escaped from the sunlit southern hemisphere are observed along orbits over the Atlantic Ocean and North America but not over Asia. The ambient electron temperatures (Te) near 2500 km have their highest values at trough latitudes for all longitudes. At altitudes near 1000 km elevated electron temperatures in the trough were not a consistent feature of the data. Equatorward of the trough, in the longitude sector to which conjugate photoelectrons have access, Te ~ 4000 K at 2500 km and ~ 3000 K at 1000 km. For regions with the conjugate point in darkness Te ? 2300 K over the 1000–2500 km altitude range. The effective thermal characteristics of conjugate photoelectrons are studied as functions of altitude and latitude. The observations indicate that (1) at trough latitudes elevated electron temperatures in the topside ionosphere are mostly produced by sources other than conjugate photoelectrons, and (2) at subtrough latitudes, in the Alantic Ocean-North American longitude sector, conjugate photoelectrons contribute significantly to the heating of topside electrons. Much of the conjugate photoelectron energy is deposited at altitudes >2500 km then conducted along magnetic field lines into the ionosphere.  相似文献

Electron spectra obtained during the flight of Black Brant VB-31 on August 17, 1970 through a stable aurora to a height of 268 km have been analyzed in detail to obtain the pitch angle distributions from 25 to 155° and the electron energy distributions over an energy range of 18 keV to 20 eV through the region of atmospheric interaction down to 97 km. Backscatter ratios for 140° pitch angle range from 0.065 for 18 keV electrons to 0.22 for 1 keV electrons. Backscatter of lower energy electrons decreases with atmospheric depth below 200 km. The effect of the interactions between auroral electrons and the atmosphere is such as to give a peak in electron flux which moves progressively to higher energies with penetration depth. The secondary electron flux increases monotonically with height up to 200 km. The secondary electron spectrum can be approximated by an energy power over small energy ranges but its form is somewhat dependent on height and on the primary electron spectrum.  相似文献

It is shown by numerical simulations that enhanced current density can generate double layers, even when the electron drift speed is significantly below the electron thermal speed. The double layer potential is spontaneously produced by the space charge self-consistently developed inside the simulation domain. The particle influxes from the low-potential boundary of our simulation domain are independent of the outfluxes. The potential difference φ0 is shown increase with increasing number density of the injection current. Strong double layers with potential energy 0 ? kT0 (the electron thermal energy) are stably formed when the injection electron current much exceeds the thermal current of ambient electrons. The backscattered and mirrored electrons are found to have stabilizing effects on the current-driven double layers.  相似文献

Based on data from the SONG and SPR-N multichannel hard electromagnetic radiation detectors onboard the CORONAS-F space observatory and the X-ray monitors onboard GOES satellites, we have distinguished the thermal and nonthermal components in the X-ray spectrum of an extreme solar flare on January 20, 2005. In the impulsive flare phase determined from the time of the most efficient electron and proton acceleration, we have obtained parameters of the spectra for both components and their variations in the time interval 06:43–06:54 UT. The spectral index in the energy range 0.2–2 MeV for a single-power-law spectrum of accelerated electrons is shown to have been close to 3.4 for most of the time interval under consideration. We have determined the time dependence of the lower energy cutoff in the energy spectrum of nonthermal photons E γ0(t) at which the spectral flux densities of the thermal and nonthermal components become equal. The power deposited by accelerated electrons into the flare volume has been estimated using the thick-target model under two assumptions about the boundary energy E 0 of the electron spectrum: (i) E 0 is determined by E γ0(t) and (ii) E 0 is determined by the characteristic heated plasma energy (≈5kT (t)). The reality of the first assumption is proven by the fact that plasma cooling sets in at a time when the radiative losses begin to prevail over the power deposited by electrons only in this case. Comparison of the total energy deposited by electrons with a boundary energy E γ0(t) with the thermal energy of the emitting plasma in the time interval under consideration has shown that the total energy deposited by accelerated electrons at the beginning of the impulsive flare phase before 06:47 UT exceeds the thermal plasma energy by a factor of 1.5–2; subsequently, these energies become approximately equal and are ~(4–5) × 1030 erg under the assumption that the filling factor is 0.5–0.6.  相似文献

The transport of energy in space plasmas, especially in the solar wind, is far from being understood. Measuring the temperature of the electrons and their non-thermal properties is essential to understand the transport properties in collisionless plasmas. Quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy is a reliable tool for measuring the electron temperature accurately since it is less sensitive to the spacecraft perturbations than particle detectors. We apply this method to Ulysses radio data obtained during the first pole-to-pole fast latitude scan in the high-speed solar wind, using a kappa function to describe the electron velocity distribution. We deduce the variations with heliocentric distance between 1.5 and 2.3 AU in the fast solar wind at high latitude in terms of three fitting parameters: the electron density varies as n e??R ?1.96±0.08, the electron temperature as T e??R ?0.53±0.15, and the kappa index of the distribution remains constant at ??=2.0±0.2. These observations agree with the predictions of the exospheric theory.  相似文献

Langmuir waves (LWs), which are believed to play a crucial role in the plasma emission of solar radio bursts, can be excited by streaming instability of energetic electron beams. However, solar hard X-ray observations imply that the energetic flare electrons usually have a power-law energy distribution with a lower energy cutoff. In this paper, we investigate LWs driven by the power-law electrons. The results show that power-law electrons with the steepness cutoff behavior can excite LWs effectively because of the population inversion distribution below the cutoff energy (E c ). The growth rate of LWs increases with the steepness index (δ) and decreases with the power-law index (α). The wave number of the fastest growing LWs ( D ), decreases with the characteristic velocity of the power-law electrons ( \(v_{c}=\sqrt{2E_{c}/m_{e}}\) ) and increases with the thermal velocity of ambient electrons (v T ). This can be helpful for us to understand better the physics of LWs and the dynamics of energetic electron beams in space and astrophysical plasmas.  相似文献

Low and mid-latitude lower E-region electron temperature profiles which were obtained by means of an insitu probe were collected. Profiles which are discussed here cover the heights of 90–120 km and measurement reliability at these heights is discussed mainly in terms of electrode contamination and aerodynamical heating.Although measurement errors might exist in some of the electron temperature profiles, it is conclusively described that daytime electron temperature is very often much higher than the possible neutral temperature and TeTn is rarely seen.  相似文献

Energy spectra of electrons between 30 eV and 18 keV were obtained with a spectrometer on a Black Brant rocket launched from Cape Parry, N.W.T. (Λ = 75.2°) on December 6, 1974 to study the dayside magnetospheric cleft. The rocket flew to an apogee of 236 km and travelled poleward to 80° invariant latitude. The cleft was observed to extend from 76.9 to 78.4° invariant latitude. Equatorward of this electrons of a few keV energy were observed with a total energy flux of up to 2 erg/cm2 sec ster. Variable fluxes of electrons with a spectrum fitted by a Maxwellian distribution of 150 eV characteristic energy were observed through most of the cleft. One inverted V structure was crossed. In that region, the electron energy increased to 650 eV and a total energy flux of 8 erg/cm2 sec ster was measured. The event was a temporal one and only a few km in width, as deduced from optical data. Fluxes of about 10−2 erg/cm2 sec ster were recorded poleward of the cleft.  相似文献

The problem of hydrodynamic response of the solar chromosphere on impulsive heating by energetic electrons is discussed. All basic physical processes are considered in a one-dimensional approximation, due to presence of a strong magnetic field. The calculations are performed for the heating of the chromosphere by electrons having a power-law energetic spectrum. In the upper chromosphere the electron temperature rises rapidly to values of order 107 K. The ion temperature is more than the order of magnitude less than the temperature of electrons. The heated high-temperature chromospheric plasma expands into corona with a velocity up to 1500 km s–1. In more dense layers, the fast re-emission of supplied energy takes place. This process gives rise to short-lived EUV flash. Just below the flare transition layer the thermal instability produces cold plasma condensation which moves downward at a velocity exceeding the sonic one in the quiet chromosphere.  相似文献
