Leaching characteristics of fly ash   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The disposal of fly ash as a byproduct of thermic power stations, results in significant environmental problems. The leaching of coal fly ash during disposal is of concern for possible contamination, especially for the aquatic environment when ash is in contact with water. The aim of this study was to investigate the leaching behaviour of fly ashes currently disposed in Kemerkoy Power Plant (Turkey) fly-ash-holding pond. The studies were conducted with fly ashes from the electrostatic precipitators (fresh fly ash) and from the fly ash pond (pre-leached fly ash). The fly ashes has alkaline in nature and pH ranges between 11.9 to 12.2. The pre-leached fly ash exhibited lower EC values (7,400 µS) than the fresh fly ash (10,300 µS). In contrast to Fe and Pb, the elements such as Cr, Cd, Cu and Co did not leach from the fly ash. The Ca and Mn concentrations decreased with increasing temperature whereas, Na and K concentrations increased. The results showed that the most important effects of fly ash leaching were pH, Na, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Mn and Pb.  相似文献

To evaluate muck sediments as a potential soil amendment, total and Mehlich III-extractable concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Co in 59 muck sediment samples from the St. Lucie Estuary were analyzed. A seven-step chemical fractionation procedure was used to assess the potential mobility of heavy metals. Except for Cd, the average total concentrations of the metals are lower than the reported average concentrations of these elements in municipal composts in the U.S.A. The concentrations were also below critical levels for the safe use of wastes and byproducts in agriculture, as established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn and Co in the sediments were predominantly associated with silicate minerals in the residual form. Most metals in the muck sediments occur predominantly in weakly mobile or nonbioavailable forms. Use of mucks in neutral pH upland soils should not pose any significant hazards or risk to the environment. However, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Co, especially Zn, Cu, and Pb, could be more readily released from the muck sediments under acidic soil conditions.  相似文献

Variations in As, Ba, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, Th, Tl, U, W, and Zn uptake were evaluated in young, middle-aged, and mature basil, tomato, zucchini, and sunflower plants grown in soils amended with 5, 10, and 20% by weight fly ash. Elements susceptible to uptake with increasing fly ash were As and Tl, with As exceeding potentially toxic levels in basil and zucchini. Temporal variations in element uptake included (1) increasing Ba and Cd concentrations in tomato and As, Ba, Cd, and Tl in zucchini, (2) decreasing Co concentrations in tomato, zucchini, and sunflower, Ni in zucchini, and Tl in basil, and (3) increasing As and Ni concentrations in basil and Pb in zucchini and sunflower during early growth followed by decreasing concentrations at maturity. Although most of the trace elements were below reported toxic levels, the elevated concentrations of As in plant tissue suggests that fly ash treatment programs can lead to potentially toxic accumulations of As, and thus, should be carefully monitored.  相似文献

Seyitömer power plant comprises 4.8% of Turkey's total energy production. The fly ash produced has been deposited in the area, since the 1960s, by a dry disposal technique. In 1997, wet disposal was improperly exercised in the area causing ash flow over agricultural fields. This study is concerned with the chemical analysis of ash, soil and water samples collected in the area following ash-removal studies after the ash flow in 1997. The results reveal that Na, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Fe, Co, and Cr contents of soil and water are governed by basement lithology in the area, whereas Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu contents are determined by fly ash from disposal sites. Although lithogenic Cr and Co contents are exceedingly high, comparison with the regulatory standards for drinking water, irrigation water and agricultural soils reveals no pollution pertinent to solid waste production in waters, whereas there is moderate pollution by Pb and Cu in soils.  相似文献

Abstract. Municipal solid waste combustion leads to concentration of various metals in the solid residue (fly ash) remaining after combustion. These metals pose serious environmental hazard and require proper handling and monitoring in order to control their harmful effects. Leachability of some metals from fly ash was examined in fly ash and Milli-Q water mixture (liquid-to-solid ratio, 100) under various temperature and pH conditions in the laboratory. The leaching experiments conducted for 24 hours showed that pH was generally more important than temperature in controlling the amount of metals leached out of the fly ash. However, at a given pH, rise in temperature led to different degree of (usually one to two fold) enhanced or reduced leaching of metals. Owing to amphoteric nature of oxides of Al, Cr, Pb and Zn, these metals often yielded typical pattern of increase and decrease in their concentrations with change in pH. The extent of leaching of Cr and Pb in our experiments suggests that decrease of pH to acidic range in the case of Pb and to neutral to acidic range for Cr over a long period of storage of fly ash at solid waste dumping site may facilitate leaching of these metals from fly ash, leading to contamination of groundwater to the level that exceeds beyond the level permitted by the environmental laws.  相似文献

The effects of injecting oxic water from the New York city (NYC) drinking-water supply and distribution system into a nearby anoxic coastal plain aquifer for later recovery during periods of water shortage (aquifer storage and recovery, or ASR) were simulated by a 3-dimensional, reactive-solute transport model. The Cretaceous aquifer system in the NYC area of New York and New Jersey, USA contains pyrite, goethite, locally occurring siderite, lignite, and locally varying amounts of dissolved Fe and salinity. Sediment from cores drilled on Staten Island and western Long Island had high extractable concentrations of Fe, Mn, and acid volatile sulfides (AVS) plus chromium-reducible sulfides (CRS) and low concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and U. Similarly, water samples from the Lloyd aquifer (Cretaceous) in western Long Island generally contained high concentrations of Fe and Mn and low concentrations of other trace elements such as As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and U, all of which were below US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and NY maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). In such aquifer settings, ASR operations can be complicated by the oxidative dissolution of pyrite, low pH, and high concentrations of dissolved Fe in extracted water.  相似文献

The ash yield and concentrations of twenty-four minor and trace elements, including twelve potentially hazardous trace elements were determined in Mukah coal from Sarawak, Malaysia. Comparisons made to the Clarke values show that Mukah coal is depleted in Ag, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Se, U, and V. On the other hand, it is enriched in As, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb, Th, and Zn. Among the trace elements studied, V and Ba are associated predominantly with the clay minerals. Manganese, Cr, Cu, Th, and Ni are mostly bound within the aluminosilicate, sulphide and/or carbonate minerals in varying proportions, though a portion of these elements are also organically bound. Arsenic, Pb and Sb are mostly organically bound, though some of these elements are also associated with the sulphide minerals. Zinc is associated with both the organic and inorganic contents of the coal. Among the potentially hazardous trace elements, Be, Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, Se, and U may be of little or no health and environmental concerns, whereas As, Cr, Pb, Sb and Th require further examination for their potential health and environmental concerns. Of particular concern are the elements As, Pb and Sb, which are mostly organically bound and hence cannot be removed by physical cleaning technologies. They escape during coal combustion, either released as vapours to the atmosphere or are adsorbed onto the fine fly ash particles.  相似文献

A detailed assessment of elements was carried out at a power plant rated at approximately 760 MW of electricity using western Canadian subbituminous coal. The concentrations of elements of environmental concern (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Pb) in milled coals, ashes, stack-emitted materials. Speciation of As, Cr, and Ni were determined. The polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from the stack were also measured. The rates of input of elemental input for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Pb were 28, 0.94, 230, 0.44, 44, and 88 kg/day, respectively; of which only 0.16, 0.01, 0.40, 0.27, 0.15, and 0.04 kg/day, respectively, were stack emitted. The total stack emission of toxic elements is 1.02 kg/day, with Cr being the highest contributor to this group with 0.4 kg/day. However, Hg at 0.27 kg/day has the highest percentage rate of emission at about 60%, while Cd has the lowest at about 1%. The electrostatic precipitator (ESP) removes a significant portion of the elements indicated by their relative enrichment (RE) ratios greater than 0.7. The results show that most of the elements in milled coal are low compared to world coals and other Canadian milled coals.Mercury is mostly ( 81%) emitted as gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), with 19% as reactive gaseous mercury (RGM). Particulate mercury is very low and averages about 0.1% of the total mercury at this station. Most of the arsenic in the milled coal is primarily associated with pyrite or as arsenate in its less toxic form of As+5 (> 95%). In both bottom and fly ashes, more than 95% of the total arsenic is present as As+5. Chromium in the milled coal and bottom ash is mostly non-toxic (Cr+3). The more toxic Cr+6 comprise less than 5% of the total Cr in the ESP fly ash and the stack-emitted ash. Nickel in milled coal and ashes is in the form of non-toxic Ni+2, predominantly in coordination with oxygen. The emitted PAHs include acenapthene, fluorene, 2-methyl-fluorene, phenathrene, anthracene, fluoanthene, and pyrene; which are emitted from stack at the combined rate of 3.6 g/day. The concentrations of elements of environmental concern (As, Cd, Hg, Ni, and Pb) emitted to the atmosphere by the power plant in the zone of maximum impact at ground level are lower than those listed in the Health Guidelines of the USEPA and Canadian National Air Pollution Surveillance. This is based on stable meteorological conditions, down wind from the power plant for a maximum distance of 3 km.  相似文献

Concentrations of seventeen hazardous trace elements including As, Pb, Hg, Se, Cd, Cr, Co, Mo, Mn, Ni, U, V, Th, Be, Sb, Br and Zn in the No.ll coal seam, Antaibao surface mine, Shanxi Province were determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), Cold-Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CV-AAS) and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GF-AAS). Comparisons with average concentrations of trace elements in Chinese coal show that the concentrations of Hg and Cd in the No. 11 coal seam, Antaibao surface mine are much higher. They may be harmful to the environment in the process of utilization. The variations of the trace elements contents and pyritic suffur in vertical section indicated that: (a) the concentrations of As, Pb, Mn, and pyritic sulfur decrease from roof to floor; (b) the concentrations of Cr, Zn and Mo are higher in roof, floor and lower in coal seam; (c) the concentration of Br, Sb, and Hg are higher in coal seam and lower in roof and floor; (d) the concentrations of Mo, V, Th and AI vary consistently with the ash yield. Cluster analysis of trace elements, pyritic sulfur, ash yield and major elements, such as AI, Fe, P, Ca shows that: (a) pyritic sulfur, Fe, As, Mn, Ni, Be are closely associated and reflect the influence of pyrite; (b) Mo, Se, Pb, Cr, Th, Co, Ca and A! are related to clay mineral, which is the main source of ash; (c) U, Zn, V, Na, P maybe controlled by phosphate or halite; (d) Hg, Br, Sb and Cd may be mainly organic-associated elements which fall outside the three main groups. The concentration distribution characteristics of trace elements in coal seam and the cluster analysis of major and trace elements showed that the contents of trace elements in the No. 11 coal seam, Antaibao surface mine, are mainly controlled by detrital input and migration from roof and floor.  相似文献

The concentration, distribution and modes of occurrence of trace elements in thirty coals, four floors and two roofs from Northern China were studied. The samples were collected from the major coalfields of Shanxi Province, Shaanxi Province, Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The concentrations of seventeen potential hazardous trace elements, including Hg, As, Se, Pb, Cd, Br, Ni, Cr, Co, Mo, Mn, Be, Sb, Th, V, U, Zn, and five major elements P, Na, Fe, Al, and Ca in coals were determined.Compared with average concentration of trace elements in Chinese coal, the coals from Northern China contain a higher concentration of Hg, Se, Cd, Mn, and Zn. They may be harmful to the environment in the process of combustion and utilization. Vertical variations of trace elements in three coal seams indicated the distributions of most elements in coal seam are heterogeneous. Based on statistical analyses, trace elements including Mo, Cr, Se, Th, Pb, Sb, V, Be and major elements including Al, P shows an affinity to ash content. In contrast, Br is generally associated with organic matter. Elements As, Ni, Be, Mo, and Fe appear to be associated with pyrite. The concentrations of trace elements weakly correlate either to coal rank or to maceral compositions.

Selenium and heavy metals content in some Mediterranean soils   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The study of metal contents in industrial, agricultural or/and polluted soils compared with natural or unpolluted soils is currently necessary to obtain reference values and to assess soil contamination. Nonetheless, very few works published appear in international journals on elements like Se, Li and Sr in Spanish soils. This study determines the total levels of Se, Li, Sr, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Fe, Mn and Ba in 14 natural (unpolluted) soils (Gypsisols, Leptosols, Arenosols and Acrisols), 14 agricultural soils (Anthrosols, Fluvisols and Luvisols), and 4 industrial–urban affected-surface soil horizons (Anthrosols and Fluvisols) of Eastern Spain. The geochemical baseline concentrations (GBC) and reference values (RV) have been established, and the relationships among elements and also between soil properties and elemental concentrations have been analysed. The RV obtained in this study were (mg kg−1): Se 2.68, Li 115, Sr 298, Cd 0.97, Co 35, Cr 217, Cu 46, Ni 50, Pb 137, V 120, Zn 246, Fe 124,472, Mn 2691, and Ba 743. The RV for Se and Li were used as a preliminary approach to assess soil contamination in Spanish soils. The results confirm human impact on Sr, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn soil concentrations, but evidence no deviation from natural Se, Li, Co, V, Fe, Mn and Ba concentrations. The results obtained from the statistical analysis reveal significant correlations between some elements and clay and soil organic matter (SOM) contents, indicating that metal concentrations are controlled by soil composition. One particularly interesting finding is the high correlation coefficients obtained between SOM and Se, Cd, Cr, V, Fe, and Mn, and between clay and Cd, Zn, V, Fe and Mn. Once again, these facts confirm the role of SOM and clay minerals in soil functions and that soil is an ecosystem element responsible for maintaining environmental quality.  相似文献

In the present study, coal from Chakwal (Pakistan) was leached with an aqueous solutions of iodine monochloride (ICl) and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DPTA) of different concentrations. The effect of stirring time, concentration and pH was studied on the leaching of different metals from coal. The physicochemical parameters indicated that the coal was of reasonably good quality. The results indicated that with increase in time duration, the extraction of metals increased. In most of the cases, metal concentration increased in the leachate with increasing the concentration of the leaching agents. DPTA was found to be the best leaching agent for most of the metals. Higher extraction of metals from coal fly ash indicated that coal organic matter has a pronounced effect on the leaching. Higher concentration of metals was extracted from virgin coal and coal fly ash at low pH (p?>?0.00) as compared to high pH. DPTA extracted metals in higher concentration from virgin coal and coal fly ash at low pH as compared to ICl. Based on the present study, the most leached metals were Fe, Cu, Mn and the least were Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr.  相似文献

To improve our understanding of As and Se leaching from fly ash it is necessary to know the underlying geochemical processes. It has been previously suggested that sorption processes may control the partitioning of these trace elements during leaching of fly ash. In natural systems, such as soils and sediments, As and Se have been shown to interact with iron oxides at acidic pH, with CaCO3 at alkaline pH and with clay-minerals at neutral pH. By analogy, we compared the leaching of As and Se from fly ash with the sorption of arsenate and selenite on hematite, portlandite and mullite. It was possible to describe the leaching of As and Se from acidic fly ash with a simplified model of surface complexation with iron oxides. The apparent adsorption constants calculated from the leaching experiments resembled those calculated from our sorption experiments with hematite and values published for amorphous iron oxide. The leaching of As and Se from alkaline fly ash was compared with the sorption of arsenate and selenite on portlandite. A Ca-phase was shown to control the leaching process. Portlandite was shown to be an important sorbent for arsenate and to a lesser extent for selenite, at pH > 12.4. The affinity of arsenate and selenite for mullite was low. Maximum sorption was reached in the neutral pH ranges, similar to the interactions of oxyanions with kaolinite. Sorption reversibility of arsenate on all three minerals considered in this study was less, or at least slower, than that of selenite. This feature may partly explain that the fraction of As available for leaching from fly ash is generally lower.  相似文献

Two monitoring studies were carried out at four-year intervals on a power plant that uses western Canadian subbituminous coal and generates approximately 800 Mw/h of electricity. The distributions of elements of environment concern (As, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Cd) and elements of environmental interest (B, Ba, Be, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Th, Se, V, U, and Zn) in milled coals, power plant ashes, and emitted materials from the stack were determined using neutron activation analysis (NAA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy (ICPES), and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) for most elements, Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (GFAA) for Pb, and Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption (CVAA) for Hg.The concentrations of most of elements in milled coal are low as compared to world coals and other Canadian milled coals. For example, in both studies mercury is within the lower range of world coal. Bottom ashes from both studies have low concentrations of As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Zn, as well as low relative enrichment factors (RE) for the same elements, indicating that they were not enriched in the bottom ash. The ESP's remove most of the elements of environmental interest as indicated by their high RE ratios of greater than > 0.7.The rates of input of elements of environmental concern (As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Ni) for this station were 23.65, 1.24, 0.54, 98.2 and 95.2 kg/day, respectively, of which only 0.20, 0.02, 0.31, 0.48 and 0.36 kg/day were emitted from the stack. Thus only a small amount of these elements found in the milled coal was emitted while most were captured in the bottom and the ESP ashes. Nickel has the highest rate of emission (0.48 kg/day) within the elements of environmental concern group. However, the Ni emitted from this station does not belong to the toxic species. The element with the lowest rate of emission is Cd (0.02 kg/day). The total emission of elements of environmental concern is 1.37 kg/day, which is low as compared their ambient concentrations in either rural or urban air. The total rate of emission of B, Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Se, Th, U, V, and Zn is 56.51 kg/day and is mostly comprised of the total emission of Ba (21.73 kg/day) and Zn (19.14 kg/day).  相似文献

In order to investigate the factors influencing the distribution of 32 potentially toxic elements in the Ptolemais–Kozani basin, northwestern Greece, 38 soil samples were collected and analyzed. Concentrations of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Ti, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, La, Li, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sr, V, Y, and Zn were determined by ICP-AES and concentrations of As, Bi, Cd, Cs, Mo, Rb, Sb, Th, Tl, and U by ICP-MS. Bivariate analysis, principal component analysis, and geostatistical analysis were employed to investigate the factors influencing the distribution of the elements determined in the study area. The results indicate that the distribution of the majority of elements determined, especially for Cr, Ni, and associated elements, is greatly influenced by the geology and geomorphology of the study area. Principal component analysis has yielded four factors that explain over 77% of the total variance in the data. These factors are as follows: lithophilic elements that are associated with Al silicates minerals of K (factor I: 29.4%), ultramafic rocks (factor II: 20.5%), elements that are coprecipitated with Fe and Mn oxides (factor III: 18.0%), and anthropogenic activities (factor IV: 9.3%). The anthropogenic activities that influence the distribution of several potentially toxic elements (i.e., Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) are agricultural practices and the deposition of fly ash in the vicinity of the local power stations.  相似文献

The possibility of using the species Silene compacta Fischer (Caryophyllaceae) as a plant indicator for Zn, Fe and Cu is discussed in this paper. Rock and plant samples were collected from an area near Essimi, north-eastern Greece, which is known for its Cu–Pb–Zn mineralization and analyzed for their content in 14 elements (Fe, Mn, Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Zn and V). The data illustrate positive linear correlation between the concentrations of Zn, Fe and Cu in plant ash and rock samples. In particular, these correlations are 0.99 for Zn, 0.97 for Fe and 0.97 for Cu and are significant at the 99.9% confidence level. Therefore, S. compacta could be used as a plant indicator for Zn, Fe and Cu mineralization.  相似文献
