Morphological features of whistlers recorded at low latitude ground station Gulmarg (geomag. lat., 24 26N) are studied to deduce information about ducts. The morphological characteristics of low latitude whistlers are discussed and compared with the characteristics of middle and high latitude whistlers. The maximum electron density (N m ) at the height of the ionosphere obtained from whistler dispersion comes out to be higher than that of the background, which is in accordance with the characteristics of the whistler duct. The equivalent width of the whistler duct at the maximum height of its path is found to be close to the value obtained from satellite observations. The characteristics of whistler ducts in low latitude ionosphere are similar to those in middle and high latitude ionosphere. The width of ducts estimated from the diffuseness of the whistler track observed during magnetic storm is found to lie in the range of 50–200 km.  相似文献

The propagationmechanism of low latitude daytime whistlers is investigated on the basis of ground measurements made continuously during daytime in North India at Jammu (geomag. lat. 22°26°N;L = 1.17). On February 14, 1998 extremely small dispersion (ESD) whistlers with dispersion varying from 5–10 sec1/2 in surprisingly large numbers were recorded at Jammu during daytime in the late afternoon. The results of a study of the characteristics of ESD whistlers are presented and the discussion indicates that ESD whistlers recorded are the VLF waves radiated from the return stroke of the lightning discharge launched at the ionosphere with different initial wave normal angles, propagated upwards under eitherquasi-longitudinal conditions or pro-longitudinal whistler mode, turned around at different heights due to quasi-transverse propagation and received at Jammu with the dispersion of the order of 5–10 sec1/2. The validity of this suggestion has been tested by performing actualray-tracing computations in thepresence of equatorial anomaly model. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A transistorized wide-band (0.5–11 kHz) VLF goniometer has been developed for the study of whistlers and ELF/VLF emissions. It consists of two crossed vertical loops from which a single loop aerial, rotating about a vertical axis at a frequency of 25 sec?1, is synthesized electronically. During periods of high whistler activity, when the same propagation paths may be identified in successive whistler groups, it is possible to determine the bearing of the exit point of such a magnetospheric path with an error, typically, of ± 10–20°.  相似文献

The effect of ions on whistler dispersion characteristics has been studied. It is shown that the significant changes in the dispersion characteristics of low-latitude whistlers are brought about by the presence of ions. The dispersions for Nainital (geomagnetic lat. 19°1'N) and Gulmarg (geomagnetic lat. 24°10'N) are found to peak around 800 Hz. The short whistler sonograms recorded at Nainital and Gulmarg have been analysed, using the complete dispersion equation and the effect of ions has been shown. At higher frequencies the dispersion is found to decrease steadily and becomes independent of ions. Some examples of short whistlers have been found whose characteristics do not conform to the general trend of low-latitude whistlers, and, on the other hand, these whistlers show a constant dispersion unaffected by ions up to a fairly low frequency and thereafter decrease sharply at lower frequencies.  相似文献

In this paper, the nonlinear dispersion relation for whistlers in the ionosphere has been derived and then the group travel time for an ion-cyclotron whistler from its source to an observer at the satellite has been theoretically calculated. It is seen that the nonlinear effect has some important contribution in the expression of group travel time. Our present analysis gives a more correct result than that obtained by Gurnett and others. From numerical estimations, it is found that the group travel time of whistler may be changed reasonably due to nonlinear interaction of the wave and the plasma of ionosphere.  相似文献

The expression for nonlinear shift of a wave number of a whistler wave propagating through the ionosphere has been derived and the results have been discussed. It is seen that nonlinear shift of a wave number of a whistler is significant in some physical situations. From numerical estimations it is observed that wave number shifts of a whistler for both the LCP and RCP waves become significant when the frequency of the waves are nearly equal to the ion-cyclotron frequency.  相似文献

A unique night-time natural electromagnetic disturbances in the VLF/ELF range received during a magnetically quite period at a low latitude Indian ground station, Jammu (geomag. lat. 19°26′ N, L=1.17) has been reported. During the routine observation of VLF waves at Jammu, whistlers and different types of VLF/ELF emissions such as whistlers of varying dispersion confined to a small band limited frequency range, hisslers, pulsing hiss, discrete chorus emissions of rising and falling tones with multiple bands, oscillating tone discrete emission, whistler-triggered hook and discrete chorus risers emissions, etc. have been observed simultaneously during the quiet period on a single night. Such type of unique simultaneous observations has never been reported from any of the low latitude ground stations and this is the first observation of its kind. The results are discussed in the light of recorded features of whistlers and emissions. Generation and propagation mechanism are discussed briefly. Plasma parameters are further derived from the dispersion analysis of nighttime whistlers and emissions recorded simultaneously during magnetically quiet periods.  相似文献

In order to estimate the path latitude of low-latitude whistlers, the measurement of the direction of arrival (bearing and elevation) and the polarization has been successfully carried out a low-latitude station at Takayama (geomag. lat. 26°), by using our newly developed electronic devices. Our system of using two crossed loops and a vertical monopole is, in principle, based on Crary's method and is effective for elliptically polarized waves. The measurements were made at a specific frequency of 4.5 kHz.The main results of our preliminary experiments are (i) the exit points of observed whistlers are located several tens of kilometers approximately north-north-east of the observing site and (ii) although a few whistlers have shown the polarization very close to circular, the polarization of most whistlers are generally elliptical, indicating the effect of multi-rays propagating in the Earth- ionosphere waveguide.  相似文献

The Voyager 1 observations of whistlers at Jupiter are summarized in order to provide a basis for further analyses of the density profile of the Io plasma torus as well as to support studies of atmospheric lightning at Jupiter. All the whistlers detected by Voyager I fell into three general regions in the torus at radial distances ranging between 5 and 6RJ. An analysis of the broadband wave amplitudes measured by the Voyager 1 plasma wave instrument and estimates of the peak whistler amplitudes imply that the grouping of whistlers was due to variations in the sensitivity of the receiver to the whistlers and not to variations in the source or propagation paths of the whistlers. The whistler dispersions are presented in statistical form for each of the three groups of events and analyzed in view of the structure of the Io plasma torus as determined by plasma measurements. The results of these analyses give source locations for the whistlers at the foot of the magnetic field lines threading the torus in both hemispheres and over a range of longitudes.  相似文献

This short report concerns a general consideration of whistler manifestations in fine structures, including possible trajectories of obliquely propagating whistlers, the role of quasilinear diffusion and an interpretation of new observations. A whistler ray tracing and kinetic whistler growth rates under arbitrary angles to the magnetic field in the solar corona were calculated. Different regimes of a whistler instability yield divers elements of fine structures: different stripes in emission and absorption or millisecond pulsations, moreover, zebra-stripes can convert into fiber bursts and inversely. A new explanation of low-frequency absorption in fibers is proposed: it is connected with an attenuation of plasma-wave instability due to the fast electron diffusion by whistlers. Rope-like chains of fiber bursts are explained by a periodic whistler instability in a magnetic reconnection region.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility of exciting whistler mode waves (WMWs) in the Earth's ionosphere, by using two high frequency beams of electromagnetic waves (f1f2) suitably orientated to the geomagnetic field Ho, so that a non-linear resonant interaction can take place in the natural ionospheric plasma, approximately at the altitude of the F2 maximum electron density. Within the limitations imposed by ionospheric inhomogeneities in the interaction region, it should be possible to excite a WMW which propagates along a predetermined direction, e.g. parallel to Ho.

If we assumef1 andf2 to be approx 30 MHz (i.e. well above the ionospheric plasma frequency), this method would make it possible to select and vary the frequency range of the excited WMW up to a few hundreds kHz without substantial alterations to the high frequency transmitting system.

Since the two beams should form an angle close to 90° to the direction of propagation of the WMW, this technique may prove particularly suitable for active wave experiments at low geomagnetic latitudes, where the geometry of the geomagnetic field limits the feasibility of direct wave injection experiments.

Using the results of theoretical calculations of the three wave coupling coefficients, it will be shown that the transmitters required to produce WMWs with field strengths comparable to that of naturally occurring strong whistlers are substantial, but feasible.  相似文献

Electrical activity in a planetary atmosphere enables chemical reactions that are not possible under conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium. In both the Venus and terrestrial atmospheres, lightning forms nitric oxide. Despite the existence of an inventory of NO at Venus like the Earth’s, and despite observations of the signals expected from lightning at optical, VLF, and ELF frequencies, the existence of Venus lightning still is met with some skepticism. The Venus Express mission was equipped with a fluxgate magnetometer gradiometer system sampling at rates as high as 128 Hz, and making measurements as low as 200 km altitude above the north polar regions of Venus. However, significant noise levels are present on the Venus Express spacecraft. Cleaning techniques have been developed to remove spacecraft interference at DC, ULF, and ELF frequencies, revealing two types of electromagnetic waves, a transverse right-handed guided mode, and a linearly polarized compressional mode. The propagation of both types of signals is sensitive to the magnetic field in ways consistent with propagation from a distant source to the spacecraft. The linearly polarized compressional waves generally are at lower frequencies than the right-handed transverse waves. They appear to be crossing the usually horizontal magnetic field. At higher frequencies above the lower hybrid frequency, waves cannot enter the ionosphere from below when the field is horizontal. The arrival of signals at the spacecraft is controlled by the orientation of the magnetic field. When the field dips into the atmosphere, the higher frequency guided mode above the lower hybrid frequency can enter the ionosphere by propagating along the magnetic field in the whistler mode. These properties are illustrated with examples from five orbits during Venus Express’ first year in orbit. These properties observed are consistent with the linearly polarized compressional waves being produced at the solar wind interface and the transverse guided waves being produced in the atmosphere.  相似文献

Comparison of the low altitude polar orbiting Injun 5 Satellite data with the ground VLF data has revealed that there is a definite scarcity of VLF/ELF emissions at the ground level compared with the extent to which they are present at or above the auroral altitudes. Reasons for this have been investigated by performing ray path computations for whistler mode VLF propagation in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic medium, such as the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. Based on wave normal computations in the lower ionosphere, it has been found that many of the near-auroral zone VLF/ELF events are frequently either reflected from, or heavily attenuated in, the lower ionosphere. Besides collisional loss, severe attenuation of VLF signals in the lower ionosphere is also caused by the divergence of ray paths from the vertical (spatial attenuation). Cone of wave normal angles for the wave, within which VLF/ ELF signals are permitted to reach the ground, has been established. Wave normals lying outside this transmission cone are reflected from the lower ionosphere and do not find exit to the Earth-ionosphere cavity. Computations for VLF signals produced at auroral zone distances in the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere indicates that these signals are more or less trapped in the magnetosphere at altitudes > 1RE.  相似文献

A ray tracing computer program for non-ducted whistler mode waves in a warm plasma in the magnetosphere is developed, where electron temperature effects are taken into account. The refractive index is calculated from the warm-plasma approximation and is used in the ray tracing after its accuracy has been checked by comparison with the hot-plasma solution without approximation. The ray paths do not depend appreciably on electron temperature. However, there are regions where the waves are heavily damped by Landau damping. By paying attention to this damping region, the electron temperature can be estimated from a satellite observation of the Doppler shift and damping of a ground-based VLF signal.  相似文献

Synoptic observations made on magnetic recording tape at Huancayo, Peru, at the magnetic dip equator, during the International Geophysical Year 1957–1958, were aurally reviewed at that time and no whistlers, hiss, or other emissions were heard. In view of the more recent observation of whistlers at geomagnetic latitudes as low as 12°, and in conjunction with a study of equatorial hiss observed in the topside ionosphere, these recordings have recently been reassessed by reducing them with modern real-time, digital spectrographic equipment. Although the observations were found to be of high quality, and to show the classical features of ground-wave and sky-wave propagation of sferics and VLF transmissions, again no evidence whatsoever of whistlers, hiss, or other emissions is found. Thus it is concluded that the whistlers observed at very low latitudes do not propagate subionospherically to the equator and it is confirmed that “hybrid” whistlers must be due to subionospheric propagation across the equator of the causative sferic rather than of the short whistler.  相似文献

The downward propagation of ELF waves (100–700 Hz) in the ionosphere is studied by means of a generalised multiple-reflection full-wave method. It is shown that for the production of an ion cutoff whistler the incident wave-normal must point inwards (equatorwards) with respect to the vertical, the ion cutoff whistler conversion coefficient RRL being a maximum when the reflected wave normal lies close to the geomagnetic field direction at the crossover level. For a low frequency cutoff of ELF noise to exist, the incident wave-normals at the crossover level must lie outside a ‘cone of penetration’ of ~40° semi-vertical angle, whose axis coincides with the geomagnetic field line. For propagation in the magnetic meridian plane, total reflection of downgoing whistlers is obtained either for large outward (poleward) incident angles, with reflection heights generally above the crossover level and possibly even above the gyrofrequency level, or else for inward (equatorward) wave-normal directions, in which case the reflection process usually occurs below the crossover level, and involves an R to L mode conversion on the downgoing path.Analysis of a scatter plot of the lower cutoff frequencies of ELF noise as a function of altitude and latitude shows that widely varying abundances must be postulated at all latitudes in order to explain the observations.  相似文献

The possible generation of intermediate drift bursts in type IV dm continua through coupling between whistler waves, traveling along the magnetic field, and Langmuir waves, excited by a loss-cone instability in the source region, is elaborated. We investigate the generation, propagation and coupling of whistlers. It is shown that the superposition of an isotropic background plasma of 106K and a loss-cone distribution of fast electrons is unstable for whistler waves if the loss-cone aperture 2α is sufficiently large (sec α?4); a typical value of the excited frequencies is 0.1 ω ce (ω ce is the angular electron cyclotron frequency). The whistlers can travel upwards through the source region of the continuum along the magnetic field direction with velocities of 21.5–28 v A (v A is the Alfvén velocity). Coupling of the whistlers with Langmuir waves into escaping electromagnetic waves can lead to the observed intermediate drift bursts, if the Langmuir waves have phase velocities around the velocity of light. In our model the instantaneous bandwith of the fibers corresponds to a frequency of 0.1–0.5 ω ce and leads to estimates of the magnetic field strength in the source region. These estimates are in good agreement with those derived from the observed drift rate, corresponding to 21.5–28 v A, if we use a simple hydrostatic density model.  相似文献

PL whistlers
Simultaneous ground and satellite VLF observations together with raytracing studies clearly establishes the existence of ground observed PL whistlers. The dynamic spectrum (?-ν-t shape) of observed PL whistlers may be reproduced exactly by raytracing in TLG magnetospheric models consistent with lower ionosphere, topside ionosphere and equatorial density measurements. The Transition Level Gradient (TLG) model is based on the observation that the transition level altitude increases towards the plasmapause (Titheridge, 1976). PL ground whistlers (i) are observed downgoing over large latitudinal ranges, for up to 2000 km of satellite travel, by ISIS II at 1400 km altitude, (ii) have almost the same dynamic spectrum over the entire latitudinal range observed by ISIS II, (iii) are indistinguishable from ducted whistlers over the observed frequency range (i.e. linear Q for ? < 10 kHz), (iv) have nose frequencies > 16 kHz, (v) at 1400 km altitude have a lower latitudinal cutoff at L ~ 2 and a higher latitudinal cutoff between L ~ 3 and L ~ 4 and (vi) probably only occur at night-time during or immediately following disturbed magnetic activity.  相似文献

The non-ducted whistler propagation in the inner magnetosphere is discussed using the broad-band VLF measurement on board the K-9M-26 rocket launched at 1703 hr JST on 24 August 1969 from Kagoshima Space Center (geomagnetic lat 20°N). A large number of whistlers which seemed to be two-hop whistlers originating in the northern hemisphere were observed. The main features of these whistlers are summarized: (1) their dispersion value is widely scattered in the range 55–75 sec12, (2) their frequency spectra show a broad maximum in the frequency range 2–5 kHz and higher frequency components are likely to disappear. Attempts are made to interpret these properties in terms of ducted or non-ducted propagation. It is then found from the ray tracing studies that the measurements are satisfactorily explained by non-ducted propagation in the inner magnetospheric model with latitudinal density gradient such as the equatorial anomaly.  相似文献
