Inferences of subsurface flow velocities using local domain ring-diagram helioseismology depend on measuring the frequency shifts of oscillation modes seen in acoustic power spectra. Current methods for making these measurements use maximum-likelihood fitting techniques to match a model of modal power to the spectra. The model typically describes a single oscillation mode, and each mode in a given power spectrum is fit independently. We present a new method that produces measurements with higher reliability and accuracy by fitting multiple modes simultaneously. We demonstrate that this method permits measuring sub-surface flows deeper into the Sun while providing higher uniformity in data coverage and velocity response closer to the limb of the solar disk. While the previous fitting method performs better for some measurements of low phase-speed modes, we find this new method to be particularly useful for high phase-speed modes and small spatial areas.  相似文献

Oscillations of magnetic structures in the solar corona have often been interpreted in terms of magnetohydrodynamic waves. We study the adiabatic magnetoacoustic modes of a prominence plasma slab with a uniform longitudinal magnetic field, surrounded by a prominence – corona transition region (PCTR) and a coronal medium. Considering linear small-amplitude oscillations, we deduce the dispersion relation for the magnetoacoustic slow and fast modes by assuming evanescentlike perturbations in the coronal medium. In the system without PCTR, a classification of the oscillatory modes according to the polarisation of their eigenfunctions is made to distinguish modes with fastlike or slowlike properties. Internal and external slow modes are governed by the prominence and coronal properties, respectively, and fast modes are mostly dominated by prominence conditions for the observed wavelengths. In addition, the inclusion of an isothermal PCTR does not substantially influence the mode frequencies, but new solutions (PCTR slow modes) are present.  相似文献

A new statement of the eigenvalue problem of studying small perturbations in arbitrary integrable self-gravitating systems is presented. An example of such a system, a 2D stellar disc, is considered in detail. The theory, based on the general equation for disc eigenmodes, reveals mechanisms for the formation and growth of global galactic structures. This new point of view specifies the limits of the unified theory of bar-like and spiral modes that was based on the assumption that global galactic structures could be understood in terms of low-frequency disc modes.  相似文献

We present new results for pulsating neutron stars. We have calculated the eigenfrequencies of the modes that one would expect to be the most important gravitational wave sources: the fundamental fluid f mode, the first pressure p mode and the first gravitational wave w mode, for twelve realistic equations of state. From these numerical data we have inferred a set of 'empirical relations' between the mode frequencies and the parameters of the star (the radius R and the mass M ). Some of these relations prove to be surprisingly robust, and we show how they can be used to extract the details of the star from observed modes. The results indicate that, should the various pulsation modes be detected by the new generation of gravitational wave detectors that come online in a few years, the mass and the radius of neutron stars can be deduced with errors no larger than a few per cent.  相似文献

A new scheme has been devised to calculate discrete unstable global shearing spiral modes of gaseous disk models of galaxies. The scheme makes use of the Legendre expansion of eigen functions and the problem of stability analysis is reduced to an eigenvalue problem of an infinite matrix. The spiral patterns of these shearing wave solutions of linearized equations change their form in the course of time due to the differential rotation of the equilibrium disk. These shearing wave solutions are presumed to have intermediate characteristics between so-called density-waves and material arms. Comparison between these shearing modes and the non-shearing normal modes for a series of disk models is presented.  相似文献

A new theory is formulated for the analytic continuation of quasi-periodic orbits from non-linear, periodic modes of a two degree-of-freedom system in rotating coordinates. Formal solutions of the equations of motion are developed in series expansions, with the non-linear modes as reference solutions. Conditions are determined on the existence and boundedness of the time-dependent coefficients of the velocity field. Boundedness properties of the orbits are specified by an orbit function derived from the Jacobi integral.  相似文献

CCD photometry observation of a newly discovered, high amplitude Delta Scuti star GSC 1566-2802, with a visible filter, is presented. The observations were carried out at Alborz Observatory located in Mahdasht, Karaj, Iran. The main goal of this project was to update our knowledge of the periodic variations of the target star. This paper covers three analyses, first calculating a new ephemeris and plotting a new light curve based on 19 times of maxima; then a Fourier analysis of the observed data points which results in determining probable oscillation modes, as well as computing its physical parameters which guide us to its harmonics and pulsation modes.  相似文献

A global analysis of the surface trapping of low-frequency non-radial g modes in rotating early-type stars is undertaken within the Cowling, adiabatic and traditional approximations. The dimensionless pulsation equations governing these modes are reviewed, and the boundary conditions necessary for solution of the equations are considered; in particular, an outer mechanical boundary condition, which does not enforce complete wave trapping at the stellar surface, is derived and discussed in detail. The pulsation equations are solved for a 7-M model star over a range of rotation rates, using a numerical approach.
The results of the calculations confirm the findings of the preceding paper in the series: modes with eigenfrequencies below a cut-off cannot be fully trapped within the star, and exhibit leakage in the form of outwardly propagating waves at the surface. The damping rates resulting from leakage are calculated for such 'virtual' modes, and found to be appreciably larger than typical growth rates associated with opacity-driven pulsation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the surface perturbations generated by virtual modes are significantly changed from those caused by fully trapped modes; the latter result suggests differences in the line-profile variations exhibited by these two types of mode.
The findings are discussed in the context of the 53 Per, SPB and pulsating Be classes of variable star. Whilst wave leakage will probably not occur for overstable g modes in the 53 Per and slowly rotating SPB stars, the adoption of the new outer mechanical boundary condition may still affect the pulsational stability of these systems. Wave leakage for overstable modes remains a possibility in Be stars and the more rapidly rotating SPB stars.  相似文献

We study eigenmodes of acoustic oscillations of high multipolarity l ∼ 100–1000 and high frequency (∼100 kHz), localized in neutron star envelopes. We show that the oscillation problem is self-similar. Once the oscillation spectrum is calculated for a given equation of state (EOS) in the envelope and given stellar mass M and radius R , it can be rescaled to a star with any M and R (but the same EOS in the envelope). For l ≳ 300, the modes can be subdivided into the outer and inner ones. The outer modes are mainly localized in the outer envelope. The inner modes are mostly localized near the neutron drip point, being associated with the softening of the EOS after the neutron drip. We calculate oscillation spectra for the EOSs of cold-catalyzed and accreted matter and show that the spectra of the inner modes are essentially different. A detection and identification of high-frequency pressure modes would allow one to infer M and R and determine also the EOS in the envelope (accreted or ground state) providing a new, potentially powerful method to explore the main parameters and internal structure of neutron stars.  相似文献

Gravity modes are the best probes to infer the properties of the solar radiative zone, which represents 98% of the Sun’s total mass. It is usually assumed that high-frequency g modes give information about the structure of the solar interior whereas low-frequency g modes are more sensitive to the solar dynamics (the internal rotation). In this work, we develop a new methodology, based on the analysis of the almost constant separation of the dipole gravity modes, to introduce new constraints on the solar models. To validate this analysis procedure, several solar models – including different physical processes and either old or new chemical abundances (from, respectively, Grevesse and Noels (Origin and Evolution of the Elements 199, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 15, 1993) and Asplund, Grevesse, and Sauval (Cosmic Abundances as Records of Stellar Evolution and Nucleosynthesis CS-336, Astron. Soc. Pac., San Francisco, 25?–?38, 2005)) – have been compared to another model used as a reference. The analysis clearly shows that this methodology has enough sensitivity to distinguish among some of the models, in particular, among those with different compositions. The comparison of the models with the g-mode asymptotic signature detected in GOLF data favors the ones with old abundances. Therefore, the physics of the core – obtained through the analysis of the g-mode properties – is in agreement with the results obtained in the previous studies based on the acoustic modes, which are mostly sensitive to more external layers of the Sun.  相似文献

During the course of an ongoing CCD monitoring program to investigate low-level light variations in subdwarf B (sdB) stars, weserendipitously discovered a new class of multimode pulsators withperiods of the order of an hour. These periods are a factor of tenlonger than those of previously known multimode sdB pulsators (EC14026 stars), implying the new pulsations are due to gravity modes rather than pressure modes. The iron opacity instability that drives the short period EC 14026 stars is effective in hot sdB's. Thelong period pulsators are found only among cooler sdB stars, wherethey are surprisingly common. The mechanism responsible for excitingthe deeper g-modes in cool sdB's is currently unknown, but thetemperature and gravity range in which these stars occur must be animportant clue. We present the first observational results for thisnew class of pulsating sdB stars, and discuss some possible implications.  相似文献

We study the excitation of density and bending waves and the associated angular momentum transfer in gaseous discs with finite thickness by a rotating external potential. The disc is assumed to be isothermal in the vertical direction and has no self-gravity. The disc perturbations are decomposed into different modes, each characterized by the azimuthal index m and the vertical index n , which specifies the nodal number of the density perturbation along the disc normal direction. The   n = 0  modes correspond to the two-dimensional density waves previously studied by Goldreich & Tremaine and others. In a three-dimensional disc, waves can be excited at both Lindblad resonances (LRs; for modes with   n = 0, 1, 2, …  ) and vertical resonances (VRs; for the   n ≥ 1  modes only). The torque on the disc is positive for waves excited at outer Lindblad/vertical resonances and negative at inner Lindblad/vertical resonances. While the   n = 0  modes are evanescent around corotation, the   n ≥ 1  modes can propagate into the corotation region where they are damped and deposit their angular momenta. We have derived analytical expressions for the amplitudes of different wave modes excited at LRs and/or VRs and the resulting torques on the disc. It is found that for   n ≥ 1  , angular momentum transfer through VRs is much more efficient than LRs. This implies that in some situations (e.g. a circumstellar disc perturbed by a planet in an inclined orbit), VRs may be an important channel of angular momentum transfer between the disc and the external potential. We have also derived new formulae for the angular momentum deposition at corotation and studied wave excitations at disc boundaries.  相似文献

It is the purpose of this paper to study whether the non-ducted propagation in the inner plasmasphere in the presence of the equatorial anomaly might be relevant to daytime whistlers observed on the ground at low latitudes. Realistic models of the equatorial anomaly simulating the satellite observations have been incorporated in the ray tracing computations. It is found that there are two different non-ducted modes able to penetrate through the ionosphere onto the ground; (1) whispering gallery mode around the anomaly field line which is trapped just by the outer boundary of the anomaly, and (2) pro-longitudinal (PL) mode at a latitude around 30° which is supported by the horizontal gradient in the tail of the anomaly. These modes may provide a new interpretation for some whistlers observed on the ground. The properties of these modes are examined in detail and then compared with those of ducted propagation. This study may be useful for distinguishing the propagation mode in future ground-based experiments.  相似文献

We study the scattering of low-energy cosmic rays (CRs) in a turbulent, compressive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid. We show that compressible MHD modes – fast or slow waves with wavelengths smaller than CR mean free paths induce cyclotron instability in CRs. The instability feeds the new small-scale Alfvénic wave component with wavevectors mostly along magnetic field, which is not a part of the MHD turbulence cascade. This new component gives feedback on the instability through decreasing the CR mean free path. We show that the ambient turbulence fully suppresses the instability at large scales, while wave steepening constrains the amplitude of the waves at small scales. We provide the energy spectrum of the plane-parallel Alfvénic component and calculate mean free paths of CRs as a function of their energy. We find that for the typical parameters of turbulence in the interstellar medium and in the intercluster medium the new Alfvénic component provides the scattering of the low-energy CRs that exceeds the direct resonance scattering by MHD modes. This solves the problem of insufficient scattering of low-energy CRs in the turbulent interstellar or intracluster medium that was reported in the literature.  相似文献

The coupling of Shukla-Varma (SV) and convective cell modes is discussed in the presence of non-Boltzmannian electron response and parallel equilibrium shear flow. In the linear case, a new dispersion relation is derived and analyzed. It is found that the coupled SV and convective cell modes destabilize in the presence of electron shear flow. On the other hand, in the nonlinear regime, it is shown that Shukla-Varma mode driven counter rotating vortices can be formed for the system under consideration. It is found that these vortices move slowly by comparison with the ion acoustic or electron drift-wave driven counter rotating vortices. The relevance of the present investigation with regard to space plasmas is also pointed out.  相似文献

We discuss a new type of dust acceleration mechanism that acts in a turbulent magnetized medium. The magnetohydrodynamic turbulence can accelerate grains through resonant as well as non-resonant interactions. We show that the magnetic compression provides higher velocities for super-Alfvénic turbulence and can accelerate an extended range of grains in warm media compared to gyroresonance. While fast modes dominate the acceleration for the large grains, slow modes can be important for submicron grains. We provide comprehensive discussion of all the possible grain acceleration mechanisms in interstellar medium. We show that supersonic velocities are attainable for Galactic dust grains. We discuss the consequence of the acceleration. The implications for extinction curve, grain alignment, chemical abundance etc. are provided.  相似文献

Oscillation modes of relativistic slender tori   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Accretion flows with pressure gradients permit the existence of standing waves which may be responsible for observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO's) in X-ray binaries. We present a comprehensive treatment of the linear modes of a hydrodynamic, non-self-gravitating, polytropic slender torus, with arbitrary specific angular momentum distribution, orbiting in an arbitrary axisymmetric space–time with reflection symmetry. We discuss the physical nature of the modes, present general analytic expressions and illustrations for those which are low order, and show that they can be excited in numerical simulations of relativistic tori. The mode oscillation spectrum simplifies dramatically for near Keplerian angular momentum distributions, which appear to be generic in global simulations of the magnetorotational instability. We discuss our results in light of observations of high frequency QPO's, and point out the existence of a new pair of modes which can be in an approximate 3:2 ratio for arbitrary black hole spins and angular momentum distributions, provided the torus is radiation pressure dominated. This mode pair consists of the axisymmetric vertical epicyclic mode and the lowest order axisymmetric breathing mode.  相似文献
