In this contribution we examine the problem of inferring ages and initial cluster masses from synthesis models at the limit of low-mass clusters (M≤ a few ×104 M). We show that it is not possible to apply directly synthesis models using standard methods to such clusters, since the basic hypothesis implicit in the models (a fixed proportionality between the number of stars in different evolutionary phases) is not fulfilled due to an insufficient number of stars for a reliable sampling of the stellar initial mass function. The consequence of this incomplete sampling is a non-Gaussian distribution of the mass–luminosity relation for clusters that share the same evolutionary conditions (age, metallicity and stellar initial mass distribution function). We review some tests, that can be performed before the start of the analysis, to estimate if the observed cluster can be analyzed with synthesis models following traditional procedures (like χ 2 minimization) or if it is necessary make use of synthesis models in a probabilistic framework. Finally, we show the implications of these results for estimating the low-mass tail in the initial cluster mass distribution function.  相似文献

To evaluate possible effects of solar flares on the brightness of the inner zodiacal light, it is necessary to consider the brightness contribution along the line of sight and as a function of Sun-particle distance. For this purpose, models of the brightness contribution along the line of sight are presented for both dielectric and metallic particles with a spatial distribution of the form r?ν, ν = 0, 1, 2. These models are discussed in terms of the geometry of shock front interaction. A reported zodiacal light enhancement following a solar flare (Blackwell and Ingham, 1961) is analyzed on the basis of the shock front geometry.  相似文献

Electric currents, generated by thermospheric winds, flow along the geomagnetic field lines linking the E-and F-regions. Their effects on the electric field distribution are investigated by solving the electrical and dynamical equations. The input data include appropriate models of the F-region tidal winds, the thermospheric pressure distribution and the E-and F-layer concentrations. At the magnetic equator, the calculated neutral air wind at 240 km height has a prevailling eastward component of 55 m sec-1 and the west-east and vertical ion drifts agree in their general form with incoherent scatter data from Jicamarca  相似文献

A method for deriving a planetary interior model which exactly satisfies a set of N gravitational constraints is implemented. For Jupiter, recent spacecraft measurements provide the mass, radius at a standard pressure level, rotation law, multipole moments of the internal mass distribution, and constraints on the internal composition and temperature distribution. By appropriate iterations, interior models are found which exactly satisfy these constraints. The models are assumed to have constant chemical composition and constant specific entropy in the hydrogenic envelope. The derived pressure-density relation in the outer envelope depends sensitively on the observational uncertainty in the mass multipole moment J4. Models are not forced to fit the more indirectly derived constraints, which are instead used as consistency checks. For a helium mass fraction in the envelope (Y) equal to 0.20, the inferred pressure at a mass density ≈ 0.2 g/cm3 is about a factor of 2 higher than would be indicated by experimental hydrogen shock compression data in the relevant pressure range of 105 to 106 bar. The inferred pressure distribution is in much better agreement with the shock data for a nominal Y = 0.30 ± 0.05. This value of Y is interpreted in terms of an enhancement in the envelope, by a factor of order 5 over solar abundance, of species primarily consisting of CH4, NH3, and possibly H2O. The same method is applied to Saturn, but existing uncertainties in Saturn's gravitational parameters are still too large to allow useful conclusions about the composition of its envelope.  相似文献

Images of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field are analyzed to obtain a catalog of galaxies for which the angular sizes, surface brightness, photometric redshifts, and absolute magnitudes are found. The catalog contains a total of about 4000 galaxies identified at a high signal-to-noise ratio, which allows the cosmological relations angular size—redshift and surface brightness-redshift to be analyzed. The parameters of the evolution of linear sizes and surface brightness of distant galaxies in the redshift interval 0.5–6.5 are estimated in terms of a grid of cosmological models with different density parameters (Ω V ; Ω m ). The distribution of photometric redshifts of galaxies is analyzed and possible superlarge inhomogeneities in the radial distribution of galaxies are found with scale lengths as large as 2000 Mpc.  相似文献

Based on measurements performed by the Hydrogen Deuterium Absorption Cell (HDAC) aboard the Cassini orbiter, Titan’s atomic hydrogen exosphere is investigated. Data obtained during the T9 encounter are used to infer the distribution of atomic hydrogen throughout Titan’s exosphere, as well as the exospheric temperature. The measurements performed during the flyby are modeled by performing Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations of solar Lyman-α radiation, which is resonantly scattered on atomic hydrogen in Titan’s exosphere. Two different atomic hydrogen distribution models are applied to determine the best fitting density profile. One model is a static model that uses the Chamberlain formalism to calculate the distribution of atomic hydrogen throughout the exosphere, whereas the second model is a Particle model, which can also be applied to non-Maxwellian velocity distributions. The density distributions provided by both models are able to fit the measurements although both models differ at the exobase: best fitting exobase atomic hydrogen densities of nH = (1.5 ± 0.5) × 104 cm−3 and nH = (7 ± 1) × 104 cm−3 were found using the density distribution provided by both models, respectively. This is based on the fact that during the encounter, HDAC was sensitive to altitudes above about 3000 km, hence well above the exobase at about 1500 km. Above 3000 km, both models produce densities which are comparable, when taking into account the measurement uncertainty. The inferred exobase density using the Chamberlain profile is a factor of about 2.6 lower than the density obtained from Voyager 1 measurements and much lower than the values inferred from current photochemical models. However, when taking into account the higher solar activity during the Voyager flyby, this is consistent with the Voyager measurements. When using the density profile provided by the particle model, the best fitting exobase density is in perfect agreement with the densities inferred by current photochemical models.Furthermore, a best fitting exospheric temperature of atomic hydrogen in the range of TH = (150-175) ± 25 K was obtained when assuming an isothermal exosphere for the calculations. The required exospheric temperature depends on the density distribution chosen. This result is within the temperature range determined by different instruments aboard Cassini. The inferred temperature is close to the critical temperature for atomic hydrogen, above which it can escape hydrodynamically after it diffused through the heavier background gas.  相似文献

Globular cluster systems (GCSs) of most early-type galaxies feature two peaks in their optical colour distributions. Blue-peak globular clusters (GCs) are believed to be old and metal-poor, whereas the ages, metallicities, and the origin of the red-peak GCs are still being debated. We obtained deep K-band photometry and combined it with Hubble Space Telescope observations in g and z to yield a full spectral energy distribution from the optical to the near-infrared. This now allows us to break the age–metallicity degeneracy. We used our evolutionary synthesis models galev for star clusters to compute a large grid of models with different metallicities and a wide range of ages. Comparing these models to our observations revealed a large population of intermediate-age (1–3 Gyr) and metal-rich (≈solar-metallicity) GCs, that will give us further insights into the formation history of this galaxy.  相似文献

The distribution of large-scale field-aligned currents in the dayside sector of the auroral oval has been presented for different situations in the interplanetary space. The j distribution has been calculated on the basis of a model, each part of which is controlled by a corresponding parameter of the interplanetary space. It has been shown that the field-aligned current models, proposed by Iijima and Potemra and by McDiarmid et al. describe the planetary j distribution for only particular situations in the interplanetary space and represent some particular cases of a more general model.  相似文献

We have calculated the radar backscattering characteristics of a variety of compositional and structural models of Saturn's rings and compared them with observations of the absolute value, wavelength dependence, and degree of depolarization of the rings' radar cross section (reflectivity). In the treatment of particles of size comparable to the wavelength of observation, allowance is made for the nonspherical shape of the particles by use of a new semiempirical theory based on laboratory experiments and simple physical principles to describe the particles' single scattering behavior. The doubling method is used to calculate reflectivities for systems that are many particles thick using optical depths derived from observations at visible wavelengths. If the rings are many particles thick, irregular centimeter- to meter-sized particles composed primarily of water ice attain sufficiently high albedos and scattering efficiencies to explain the radar observations. In that case, the wavelength independence of radar reflectivity implies the existence of a broad particle size distribution that is well characterized over the range 1 cm ? r ? m by n(r)dr = n0r?3dr. A narrower size distribution with a ~ 6 cm is also a possibility. Particles of primarily silicate composition are ruled out by the radar observations. Purely metallic particles, either in the above size range and distributed within a many-particle-thick layer or very much larger in size and restricted to a monolayer, may not be ruled out on the basis of existing radar observations. A monolayer of very large ice “particle” that exhibit multiple internal scattering may not yet be ruled out. Observations of the variation of radar reflectivity with the opening angle of the rings will permit further discrimination between ring models that are many particles thick and ring models that are one “particle” thick.  相似文献

Reported mode changes in δ Scuti stars can usually be explained by data insufficient to obtain multiperiodic solutions and by the effect of time-variable amplitudes. The extensive data on 4 CVn obtained by the Delta Scuti Network are used to illustrate that the large changes in the appearance of the power spectra over the years from 1966 to 1996 can be ascribed to amplitude variability. The period changes of δ Scuti stars have been collected or redetermined from the available observations and are compared with values computed from evolutionary models. For the radial pulsators of Pop. I, the observations indicate (1/P)(dP/dt) values around 10−7 yr−1 with equal distribution between period increases and decreases. The evolutionary models, on the other hand, predict that the vast majority should show increasing periods a factor of about ten smaller than observed. Arguments are given why the rate of evolution for these relatively unevolved stars cannot yet be deduced from the observed period changes.  相似文献

We propose chromospheric models of plages to explain profiles of the Ca ii H, K, λl8498, λ8542, and λ8662 lines described in Paper I. These models are consistent with boundary conditions imposed by the photosphere and the Lyman continuum. We find that increasing emission in these lines is consistent with a picture of increasing temperature gradient in the low chromosphere and the resulting increase in pressure and electron density at similar line optical depths. With this picture we suggest how to empirically determine the distribution of chromospheric parameters across the solar disk directly from Ca ii filtergrams. We also propose that the high density aspects of solar activity are produced by steep temperature gradients in the low chromosphere and thus by the enhanced heating mechanisms that steepen these gradients.  相似文献

An iterative approach is used to construct spherically symmetric equilibrium models with an anisotropic velocity distribution. The potentialities of the method have been tested on models with known distribution functions, the Osipkov-Merritt models. It is shown that models that differ significantly from the Osipkov-Merritt models can be constructed. An N-body model of a dark halo with a density distribution that approximates the results of cosmological simulations (the Navarro-Frenk-White model) has been constructed. The anisotropy profile has been taken to be similar to that yielded by cosmological simulations. The constructed models can serve as direct input data for investigating the dynamics and stability of such systems in N-body simulations.  相似文献

The martian elastic lithosphere thickness Te has recently been constrained by modeling the geodynamical response to loading at the martian polar caps and Te was found to exceed 300 km at the north pole today. Geological evidence suggests that Mars has been volcanically active in the recent past and we have reinvestigated the martian thermal evolution, identifying models which are consistent with Te>300 km and the observed recent magmatic activity. We find that although models satisfying both constraints can be constructed, special assumptions regarding the concentration and distribution of radioactive elements, the style of mantle convection and/or the mantle's volatile content need to be made. If a dry mantle rheology is assumed, strong plumes caused by, e.g., a strongly pressure dependent mantle viscosity or endothermic phase transitions near the core-mantle boundary are required to allow for decompression melting in the heads of mantle plumes. For a wet mantle, large mantle water contents of the order of 1000 ppm are required to allow for partial mantle melting. Also, for a moderate crustal enrichment of heat producing, elements the planet's bulk composition needs to be 25 and 50% sub-chondritic for dry and wet mantle rheologies, respectively. Even then, models resulting in a globally averaged elastic thicknesses of Te>300 km are difficult to reconcile with most elastic thickness estimates available for the Hesperian and Amazonian periods. It therefore seems likely that large elastic thicknesses in excess of 300 km are not representative for the bulk of the planet and that Te possibly shows a large degree of spatial heterogeneity.  相似文献

The discovery of large volcanic eruptions on Io suggests that Io is one of the most geologically active planetary bodies. The energy source of this geologic activity is believed to be tidal heating induced by Jupiter. A number of thermal history calculations were done to investigate the effect of tidal heating on the thermal history of Io taking into account solid state convection and advective heat transfer. These simulations show that the total tidal heating energy in Io is almost equal to the advectively transferred heat, indicating that the observed heat flow from Io is nearly equal to the total tidal heating energy. Since total tidal heating energy is dependent on the radius of the liquid mantle and the internal dissipation factor (Q), the radius of the liquid mantle can be estimated for a given value of Q. Some reasonable thermal history models of Io were obtained using a model with Q ≈ 25–50 in which the magma source of Ionian volcanism is at a depth of 100–300 km. The models satisfy the heat flow data and the existence of a thick lithosphere. Using a model with Q = 25 and L = 300 km (thickness of the advective region) as the standard model (model II), we then studied the effect of convective heat transfer and the initial temperature distribution on the Ionian thermal history. In these calculations, the other parameters are the same as in the standard model (model II). These calculations show that although the temperature distribution in the central region reflects the difference in the efficiency of convective heat transfer and initial temperature distribution, the temperature distribution in the outer region does not changes appreciably.  相似文献

The paper consists of some exact solutions for a homogeneous Bianchi type VI0 universe. The material distribution is taken to be a magnetized bulk viscous fluid in presence of massive cosmological string. We assume that current is flowing along x-direction. Therefore, the magnetic field is in yz-plane. For deterministic model of the universe, we assume that shear (σ) is proportional to the expansion (θ) and ζ θ=constant=ξ where ζ the coefficient of bulk viscosity and θ the expansion in the model. The physical and kinematical parameters of the models thus formed are discussed.  相似文献

We determine the masses and radii of central regions of open star cluster (OCL) models with small or zero entropy production and estimate the masses of oscillation generation regions in clustermodels based on the data of the phase-space coordinates of stars. The radii of such regions are close to the core radii of the OCL models. We develop a new method for estimating the total OCL masses based on the cluster core mass, the cluster and cluster core radii, and radial distribution of stars. This method yields estimates of dynamical masses of Pleiades, Praesepe, and M67, which agree well with the estimates of the total masses of the corresponding clusters based on proper motions and spectroscopic data for cluster stars. We construct the spectra and dispersion curves of the oscillations of the field of azimuthal velocities v φ in OCL models. Weak, low-amplitude unstable oscillations of v φ develop in cluster models near the cluster core boundary, and weak damped oscillations of v φ often develop at frequencies close to the frequencies of more powerful oscillations, which may reduce the non-stationarity degree in OCL models. We determine the number and parameters of such oscillations near the cores boundaries of cluster models. Such oscillations points to the possible role that gradient instability near the core of cluster models plays in the decrease of the mass of the oscillation generation regions and production of entropy in the cores of OCL models with massive extended cores.  相似文献

Concerning bivariate least squares linear regression, the classical approach pursued for functional models in earlier attempts (York, 1966, York, 1969) is reviewed using a new formalism in terms of deviation (matrix) traces which, for unweighted data, reduce to usual quantities leaving aside an unessential (but dimensional) multiplicative factor. Within the framework of classical error models, the dependent variable relates to the independent variable according to the usual additive model. The classes of linear models considered are regression lines in the general case of correlated errors in X and in Y for weighted data, and in the opposite limiting situations of (i) uncorrelated errors in X and in Y, and (ii) completely correlated errors in X and in Y. The special case of (C) generalized orthogonal regression is considered in detail together with well known subcases, namely: (Y) errors in X negligible (ideally null) with respect to errors in Y; (X) errors in Y negligible (ideally null) with respect to errors in X; (O) genuine orthogonal regression; (R) reduced major-axis regression. In the limit of unweighted data, the results determined for functional models are compared with their counterparts related to extreme structural models i.e. the instrumental scatter is negligible (ideally null) with respect to the intrinsic scatter (Isobe et al., 1990, Feigelson and Babu, 1992). While regression line slope and intercept estimators for functional and structural models necessarily coincide, the contrary holds for related variance estimators even if the residuals obey a Gaussian distribution, with the exception of Y models. An example of astronomical application is considered, concerning the [O/H]–[Fe/H] empirical relations deduced from five samples related to different stars and/or different methods of oxygen abundance determination. For selected samples and assigned methods, different regression models yield consistent results within the errors (?σ) for both heteroscedastic and homoscedastic data. Conversely, samples related to different methods produce discrepant results, due to the presence of (still undetected) systematic errors, which implies no definitive statement can be made at present. A comparison is also made between different expressions of regression line slope and intercept variance estimators, where fractional discrepancies are found to be not exceeding a few percent, which grows up to about 20% in the presence of large dispersion data. An extension of the formalism to structural models is left to a forthcoming paper.  相似文献

Simulations of Titan's atmospheric transmission and surface reflectivity have been developed in order to estimate how Titan's atmosphere and surface properties could affect performances of the Cassini radar experiment. In this paper we present a selection of models for Titan's haze, vertical rain distribution, and surface composition implemented in our simulations. We collected dielectric constant values for the Cassini radar wavelength (∼2.2 cm) for materials of interest for Titan: liquid methane, liquid mixture of methane-ethane, water ice, and light hydrocarbon ices. Due to the lack of permittivity values for Titan's haze particles in the microwave range, we performed dielectric constant (εr) measurements around 2.2 cm on tholins synthesized in laboratory. We obtained a real part of εr in the range of 2-2.5 and a loss tangent between 10−3 and 5×10−2. By combining aerosol distribution models (with hypothetical condensation at low altitudes) to surface models, we find the following results: (1) Aerosol-only atmospheres should cause no loss and are essentially transparent for Cassini radar, as expected by former analysis. (2) However, if clouds are present, some atmospheric models generate significant attenuation that can reach −50 dB, well below the sensitivity threshold of the receiver. In such cases, a 13.78 GHz radar would not be able to measure echoes coming from the surface. We thus warn about possible risks of misinterpretation if a “wet atmosphere” is not taken into account. (3) Rough surface scattering leads to a typical response of ∼−17 dB. These results will have important implications on future Cassini radar data analysis.  相似文献

We examine the effects of NH3 ice particle clouds in the atmosphere of Jupiter on outgoing thermal radiances. The cloud models are characterized by a number density at the cloud base, by the ratio of the scale height of the vertical distribution of particles (Hp) to the gas scale height (Hg), and by an effective particle radius. NH3 ice particle-scattering properties are scaled from laboratory measurements. The number density for the various particle radius and scale height models is inferred from the observed disk average radiance at 246 cm?1, and preliminary lower limits on particle sizes are inferred from the lack of apparent NH3 absorption features in the observed spectral radiances as well as the observed minimum flux near 2100 cm?1. We find lower limits on the particle size of 3 μm if Hp/Hg = 0.15, or 10μmif Hp/Hg = 0.50 or 0.05. NH3 ice particles are relatively dark near the far-infrared and 8.5-μm atmospheric windows, and the outgoing thermal radiances are not very sensitive to various assumptions about the particle-scattering function as opposed to radiances at 5 μm, where particles are relatively brighter. We examined observations in these three different spectral window regions which provide, in principle, complementary constraints on cloud parameters. Characterization of the cloud scale height is difficult, but a promising approach is the examination of radiances and their center-to-limb variation in spectral regions where there is significant opacity provided by gases of known vertical distribution. A blackbody cloud top model can reduce systematic errors due to clouds in temperature sounding to the level of 1K or less. The NH3 clouds provide a substantial influence on the internal infrared flux field near the 600-mbar level.  相似文献

The Sun’s polar fields play a leading role in structuring the large-scale solar atmosphere and in determining the interplanetary magnetic field. They are also believed to supply the seed field for the subsequent solar activity cycle. However, present-day synoptic observations do not have sufficient spatial resolution or sensitivity to diagnose accurately the high-latitude magnetic vector field. The high spatial resolution and sensitivity of the full-Stokes observations from the Hinode Solar Optical Telescope Spectro-Polarimeter, observing the poles long-term, allows us to build up a detailed picture of the Cycle 24 polar field reversal, including the changing latitude distribution of the high-latitude flux, and to study the effect on global coronal field models. The Hinode observations provide detailed information on the dominant facular-scale magnetic structure of the polar fields, and their field inclination and flux distribution. Hybrid synoptic magnetograms are constructed from Hinode polar measurements and full-disk magnetograms from the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM), and coronal potential field models are calculated. Loss of effective spatial resolution at the highest latitudes presents complications. Possible improvements to synoptic polar data are discussed.  相似文献
