The results of experiments aimed at investigating axial plasma flows forming during the compression of a current–plasma sheath are presented. These experiments were carried out at the KPF-4-PHOENIX plasma-focus installation, as part of a program of laboratory simulations of astrophysical jets. The plasma flows were generated in a discharge when the chamber was filled with the working gas (argon) at initial pressures of 0.5–2 Torr. Experimental data obtained using a magnetic probe and optical diagnostics are compared. The data obtained can be used to determine the location of trapped magnetic field relative to regions of intense optical glow in the plasma flow.  相似文献

对均匀流动环境中的铅直二维射流进行了试验研究,得到了流动转变的条件.采用超声多普勒流速仪(ADV)对射流流场进行了测量,得到了流速矢量图和流线图,发现在射流的迎流面存在流线跌落现象.探讨了流速比对射流背流面涡心和分离点位置的影响.给出低流速比为8的射流流场的实测结果,以供数值模拟对比使用.  相似文献

Estimates of typical parameters of accretion flows in the representative intermediate polar EX Hydrae, the polar AM Herculis, and the “hot Jupiter” WASP-12b are presented. Dimensionless parameters of astrophysical systems are compared with those of laboratory experiments on laser ablation in magnetic fields. It is shown that laboratory simulations of astrophysical flows is possible in principle, provided that some adjustment to the magnetic field, plasma density, and plasma velocity are made.  相似文献

Results from experiments on the radial distribution of the magnetic fields in axial plasma flows formed during the compression of a plasma–current sheath carried out at the KPF-4-PHOENIX plasmafocus installation are presented. The plasma flows were generated in a discharge with stationary filling of the chamber with a working gas of argon or hydrogen, and also with a pulsed injection of argon. Analysis of the radial profiles of the magnetic field distribution and their time variations are used to localize regions of trappedmagnetic field, as well as regions where a return current flows at the periphery of the plasma flow. It is shown that the transverse (radial) size of the plasma flow depends on the density of the ambient medium (background gas) through which it propagates. These experiments were carried out in the framework of a project on laboratory simulations of non-relativistic jets from young stars.

This article presents a stability criterion for shallow foundations on sand for various loading conditions. By means of laboratory model tests, a behaviour called self-healing is shown. Numerical simulations of these tests prove the suitability of the employed numerical model. Based on this validation, a numerical parametric study is done to analyse the influence of loading condition and initial state of the soil on the self-healing. Main focus is on the rotational behaviour and settlement of the foundation. The observations and numerical results are discussed and an explanation is presented based on results of cyclic laboratory tests.  相似文献

This paper presents laboratory experiments and numerical simulations of effects of submerged obstacles on tsunami-like solitary wave and its run-up. This study was carried out for the breaking and non-breaking solitary waves on 1:19.85 uniform slope which contains a submerged obstacle. New laboratory experiments are performed to describe the mitigation of tsunami amplitude and run-up under the effect of submerged obstacles. We are based on experimental results obtained to validate the numerical model. The numerical modeling using COULWAVE aims essentially to show the effect of the obstacle on the shape of solitary wave and the limit of this effect. Using a multiple nonlinear regression, we have determined a model to estimate height of run-up according to the amplitude of the wave and the obstacle peak depth.  相似文献

根据计算流体动力学理论,采用Realizable k-ε紊流模型和SIMPLEC算法,考虑浮力作用,利用有限体积法来离散求解流动环境中圆孔水平热射流的流动与传热控制方程,对流动环境中圆孔水平热射流进行了三维数值模拟,比较了不同流速比和不同射流出口温度条件下的流动特性和温度分布特性,得到了热射流轨迹的速度和温度衰减规律,分析了流速比和射流出口温度对热射流轨迹温度分布的影响。  相似文献

The results of laboratory simulations of astrophysical jets are presented. Plasma flows generated in the PF-3 plasma-focus installation of the NRC “Kurchatov Institute” and propagating to distances substantially exceeding their transverse dimensions are studied. It is shown usingmagnetic probes that the plasma flow propagates with a frozen-in magnetic field. The resulting radial distribution of the azimuthal magnetic field corresponds well to the distribution created by a longitudinal current of ~10 kA flowing in a region with a radius of 1–2 cm near the axis. Structures associated with return currents are observed at the periphery of the flow. The magnetic field decays rapidly as the flow propagates along the axis. Nevertheless, the leading lobe of the plasma flow is preserved to substantial distances in a neon discharge, possibly due to radiative cooling of the plasma.  相似文献

A new computer program (CONBAL-2) is developed for 2D numerical simulations of granular soil by random arrays of spheres. CONBAL-2 uses the discrete-element method and is based on 3D program TRUBAL, previously presented by Cundall. As in TRUBAL, the new program models a random array of elastic spheres in a periodic space. The main modification of TRUBAL is the implementation by the authors of a rigorous solution for the force–displacement relation at the interparticle contacts. This force-displacement relation is a function of the elastic constants, friction coefficient and sizes of the spheres, with the properties of quartz used to simulate sand. Other specific features of CONBAL-2 include its 2D character, the lack of particle rotation and its capability to simulate shear loading on any plane. Simulated laboratory test results are presented using CONBAL-2 and several random arrays of 531 spheres having two particle sizes. These simulations include monotonic loading drained and undrained (constant volume) ‘triaxial’ experiments, as well as a cyclic-loading, constant-volume ‘torsional shear’ test. The stress–strain curves, effective stress paths, volume changes, as well as the ‘pore water pressure’ build-up behaviour obtained in the simulations compare favourably—qualitatively and in some aspects quantitatively—with similar laboratory results on sands. However, the simulated soil is somewhat stiffer and stronger due to the perfectly rounded particles, limited range of grain sizes, lack of particle rotation and 2D character of the model.  相似文献

采用平面二维河流数学模型,系统研究概化河道的河型转化过程及其控制因素,成功模拟得到了初始比降、流量、入口含沙量增大和河岸抗冲性减弱时,河流从弯道向分汊、游荡河型转化的过程。根据模拟得到的河道平面形态、横断面形态、河床纵剖面,沿程水面线及沿程输沙率的变化,分析了河床初始比降、入口含沙量、流量和河岸抗冲性等各种因素对河型转化的影响。结果表明,模型计算得到的河型转化过程,与经典的河型成因及河型转化理论给出的趋势较为一致。  相似文献

Belgium is considering a clay formation as a possible disposal medium for the storage of conditioned radioactive waste.The clay rheology at great depth is studied by laboratory tests and in situ experiments performed from an underground laboratory build at 223 m depth in the Boom clay formation present in the N-E part of Belgium under the nuclear site Mol-Dessel. The aim of this research consists in simulating the excavation, in unfrozen clay, of large diameter galleries to be dug for the final disposal site.A finite element program using Vyalov's creep law was chosen as a first approach. The determination of the rheological parameters was made on the basis of the available laboratory experiments. Different numerical simulations were performed in order to reproduce in situ experiments, making possible a first refinement of the parameters.A shaft and gallery excavation are now being simulated, and numerical displacements will be compared to experimental observations.  相似文献

Numerical and experimental results of drying and wetting foam are presented. Foam can be wetted by wash water delivered on its top boundary, or drained by allowing the liquid to move downward in response to gravity. These processes are governed by nonlinear equations that in special cases accept exact solutions. Here we develop a numerical model that satisfies realistic boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented in conjunction with experiments conducted with coarsening foam. In addition, calculations were carried out modeling the wetting and draining of coarsened foam. From the simulations and experiments, coarsening bubbles were found responsible for accelerating drainage, or vice versa.  相似文献

The scope of this study is to numerically simulate the behaviour of Brazilian disc specimens as observed in laboratory during dynamic, high-strain rate, indirect tensile tests using an innovative combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) research code. Laboratory experiments using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus were conducted by the authors and the measured indirect tensile strength values were used to verify the FEM/DEM models. In the models the applied boundary conditions, related to the loading rate of the specimen, were matched with the experimental observations. The results of the numerical simulations, including tensile strength and failure time, are in agreement with the laboratory findings. The main failure mechanisms, i.e. tensile splitting along loading axis and shear failure close to loading platens are captured by the numerical model. A linear relationship between tensile strength and loading rate is found for the range of dynamic strain rates tested and simulated. The simulation results are in good agreement with laboratory observations and demonstrate the potential for using FEM/DEM to realistically model dynamic response of rocks.  相似文献

Owing to imperfect boundary conditions in laboratory soil tests and the possibility of water diffusion inside the soil specimen in undrained tests, the assumption of uniform stress/strain over the sample is not valid. This study presents a qualitative assessment of the effects of non‐uniformities in stresses and strains, as well as effects of water diffusion within the soil sample on the global results of undrained cyclic simple shear tests. The possible implications of those phenomena on the results of liquefaction strength assessment are also discussed. A state‐of‐the‐art finite element code for transient analysis of multi‐phase systems is used to compare results of the so‐called ‘element tests’ (numerical constitutive experiments assuming uniform stress/strain/pore pressure distribution throughout the sample) with results of actual simulations of undrained cyclic simple shear tests using a finite element mesh and realistic boundary conditions. The finite element simulations are performed under various conditions, covering the entire range of practical situations: (1) perfectly drained soil specimen with constant volume, (2) perfectly undrained specimen, and (3) undrained test with possibility of water diffusion within the sample. The results presented here are restricted to strain‐driven tests performed for a loose uniform fine sand with relative density Dr=40%. Radial–axial rock splitters are potential primary mechanical excavating tools for underground hard rock mines. In an effort to further guide the development of a working prototype, a series of laboratory, field, and numerical experiments were conducted. The results of a three-dimensional finite element analysis of a radial-axial splitter used to break intact granite blocks are presented. We present the results of numerical simulations of radiating nodes in jets outflowing from young stellar objects. The development of the fundamental and first reflection harmonics of the jet during the essentially non-linear stage is considered. We have shown for the first time the possible formation of radiating nodes with diameters smaller than the jet cross section. We describe our numerical code, which makes it possible for this class of problem to maintain a stationary equilibrium in the radial coordinate and minimize the force imbalance resulting from the transfer of stationary distributions along the meridian coordinate in the computational grid.  相似文献

This paper presents results of meticulous laboratory testing and numerical simulations on the effect of reinforcement on the low-strain stiffness and bearing capacity of shallow foundations on dry sand. The effect of the location and the number of reinforcement layers is studied in the laboratory, whereas numerical simulations are used to study the reinforcement-foundation interaction. Laboratory tests show an increase of 100, 200, and 275% not only in bearing capacity but also in low-strain stiffness (linear load–displacement behaviour) of a square foundation when one, two, and three layers of reinforcement are used, respectively. The specimen preparation technique is found to be crucial for the repeatability and reliability of the laboratory results (less than 5% variability). Numerical simulations demonstrate that if reinforcements are placed up to a depth of one footing width (B) below the foundation, better re-distribution of the load to deeper layers is achieved, thus reducing the stresses and strains underneath the foundation. Numerical simulations and experimental results clearly identify a critical zone between 0.3 and 0.5B, where maximum benefits not only on the bearing capacity but also on the low-strain stiffness of the foundation are obtained. Therefore, soil reinforcement can also be used to reduce low-strain vibrations of foundations.  相似文献

The vibrations of existing service tunnels induced by blast-excavation of adjacent tunnels have attracted much attention from both academics and engineers during recent decades in China. The blasting vibration velocity (BVV) is the most widely used controlling index for in situ monitoring and safety assessment of existing lining structures. Although numerous in situ tests and simulations had been carried out to investigate blast-induced vibrations of existing tunnels due to excavation of new tunnels (mostly by bench excavation method), research on the overall dynamical response of existing service tunnels in terms of not only BVV but also stress/strain seemed limited for new tunnels excavated by the full-section blasting method. In this paper, the impacts of blast-induced vibrations from a new tunnel on an existing railway tunnel in Xinjiang, China were comprehensively investigated by using laboratory tests, in situ monitoring and numerical simulations. The measured data from laboratory tests and in situ monitoring were used to determine the parameters needed for numerical simulations, and were compared with the calculated results. Based on the results from in situ monitoring and numerical simulations, which were consistent with each other, the original blasting design and corresponding parameters were adjusted to reduce the maximum BVV, which proved to be effective and safe. The effect of both the static stress before blasting vibrations and the dynamic stress induced by blasting on the total stresses in the existing tunnel lining is also discussed. The methods and related results presented could be applied in projects with similar ground and distance between old and new tunnels if the new tunnel is to be excavated by the full-section blasting method.  相似文献
