A digital television complex, equipped with an original slitless spectrograph with transpaarent diffraction gratings, and operating on the 0.5-meter telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, was used for spectrophotometric observations of the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies. The absolute energy distributions in the spectra of the nuclei of the Seyfert galaxies NGC 4501, NGC 7469, and NGC 1275 in the wavelength range 4000–7000 Å were obtained. Synthetic stellar magnitudes in the V band were calculated. The apparatus can be used to investigate the spectral variability of emission from the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies on a time scale of tens of minutes or more.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 39, No. 1, pp. 101–110, January–March, 1996.  相似文献

We present spectra of six type 1 and two type 2 Seyfert galaxies, a starburst galaxy and a compact narrow-line radio galaxy, taken in two spectral ranges centred around the near-infrared Ca  ii triplet (∼8600 Å), and the Mgb stellar feature at 5180 Å. We measured the equivalent widths (EWs) of these features and the Fe52 and Fe53 spectral indices.
We found that the strength of the infrared Ca  ii triplet (CaT) in type 1 Seyfert galaxies with prominent central point sources is larger than what would be expected from the observed strength of the blue indices. This could be explained by the presence of red supergiants in the nuclei of Seyfert 1 galaxies. On the other hand, the blue indices of these galaxies could also be diluted by the strong Fe  ii multiplets that can be seen in their spectra.
We have also measured the stellar‐ and gas-velocity dispersions of the galaxies in the sample. The stellar velocity dispersions were measured using both the Mgb and CaT stellar features. The velocity dispersion of the gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) was measured using the strong emission lines [O  iii ] λλ 5007, 4959 and [S  iii ] λ 9069. We compare the gas- and star-velocity dispersions and find that the magnitudes of both are correlated in Seyfert galaxies.
Most of the Seyfert 1 galaxies that we observe have stellar‐velocity dispersions somewhat greater than that of the gas in the NLR.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a modest redshift survey carried out, at generally low Galactic latitudes, in the vicinity of the South Celestial Pole. Target galaxies were selected as a 'representative' sample of underlying large-scale structures. Dimensions, approximate magnitudes and radial velocity measurements, are reported for 336 galaxies. Two obvious Seyfert 1 galaxies, one probably Seyfert 1 and three Seyfert 2 galaxies have been discovered. The redshifts are used to supplement existing data and serve to map southern voids and features out to 25 000 km s−1 in the region  270° < l < 330°, 0° > b > −45°  . Three distinct superclusters and twenty apparent voids are tentatively identified. One Void, at   l = 300°, b =−20°, cz = 16 000 km s−1  , with a diameter of 6000 km s−1, is as large as any yet mapped. It appears as part of a general underdense region.  相似文献

The relationships between the monochromatic luminosity of Seyfert galaxies at frequencies of 0.408, 1.49, and 4.85 GHz and the integrated luminosity in the far infrared (IR) range are investigated. At all radio frequencies they are linear and equally close. Some Seyfert galaxies, of morphological types S0/a, E, and S0, have a far higher radio luminosity than Seyfert spiral galaxies with the same IR luminosity. Most of them are found to have compact central radio components. Seyfert spiral galaxies follow the same relationship between radio and IR emission as non-Seyfert spiral galaxies. The relationships between radio and IR luminosity for the individual groups of galaxies of spectral types Sy 1-Sy 1.5 and Sy 1.8-Sy 2 are also linear.  相似文献

We investigate the relationship between the present-day optical luminosity function of galaxies and the X-ray luminosity function of Seyfert 1s to determine the fraction of galaxies that host Seyfert 1 nuclei and their Eddington ratios. The local type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) X-ray luminosity function is well reproduced if ∼1 per cent of all galaxies are type 1 Seyferts which have Eddington ratios of ∼10−3. However, in such a model the X-ray luminosity function is completely dominated by AGN in E and S0 galaxies, contrary to the observed mix of Seyfert host galaxies. To obtain a plausible mix of AGN host galaxy morphologies requires that the most massive black holes in E and S0 galaxies accrete with lower Eddington ratios, or have a lower incidence of Seyfert activity, than the central black holes of later-type galaxies.  相似文献

Results are presented from CCD BVRI observations of comparison stars in the neighborhoods of 22 galaxies with active nuclei having right ascensions ranging from 0 to 12 hours, of which 19 are Seyfert galaxies. The observed stars have magnitudes ranging from V=11 to V=17. For stars brighter than V=14 the typical photometic error is 0.01m. The B, V, Rc, and Ic magnitudes of most of these stars were not known previously. 14′×14′ finding charts are included. These results can be used for differential photometry of the AGNs in the B, V, Rc, and Ic bands.__________Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 2, pp. 191–211 (May 2005).  相似文献

The relevance of interaction to the presence of Seyfert or starburst activity in the nuclei of galaxies is examined. We focus the attention on the close environments of spectroscopically selected samples of Seyfert-1, Seyfert-2 and starburst galaxies. In particular the results of a statistical procedure aimed at finding physical pairs are tested with redshift measurements of the identified pairs. Seyfert and starburts galaxies show an excess of physical companions compared to normal galaxies. This excess tends to increase as one moves from Seyfert to starburst galaxies.  相似文献

We report our discovery of new active galaxies in a small sample of 23 sources with 2.16 m telescope at Beijing Astronomical Observatory. After wavelength and flux calibration, they are classified by their degree of nuclear activities: one Seyfert 1, three Seyfert 2s, six Seyfert 3s, Seven HII galaxies and one possible Seyfert 3.  相似文献

A sample of galaxy groups is investigated for the occurence of Seyfert objects within them. The velocity dispersion in groups with Seyfert galaxies is significantly larger than in groups without Seyfert galaxies. But there was not found any correlation between the galaxy density within the groups and the content of Seyfert galaxies.  相似文献

We present UBVRCIC magnitudes of 49 comparison stars in the fields of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 335, Mrk 79, Mrk 279, Mrk 506, 3C 382, 3C 390.3, NGC 6814, Mrk 304, Ark 564, and NGC 7469 in order to facilitate the photometric monitoring of these objects; 36 of the stars have not been calibrated before. The comparison stars are situated in 5 × 5 arcmin fields centred on the Seyfert galaxies, their V band flux ranges from 11.7 to 18.2 mag with a median value of 16.3 mag, and their BV colour index ranges from 0.4 to 1.6 mag with a median value of 0.8 mag. The median errors of the calibrated UBVRCIC magnitudes are 0.08, 0.04, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.06 mag, respectively. Comparison stars were calibrated for the first time in three of the fields (Mrk 506, 3C 382, and Mrk 304). The comparison sequences in the other fields were improved in various aspects. Extra stars were calibrated in four fields (Mrk 335, Mrk 79, NGC 6814, and NGC 7469) – most of these stars are fainter and are situated closer to the Seyfert galaxies compared to the existing comparison stars. The passband coverage of the sequences in five fields (Mrk 335, Mrk 79, Mrk 279, NGC 6814, and Ark 564) was complemented with the U band. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Using all available major samples of Seyfert galaxies and their corresponding closely matched control samples of nonactive galaxies, we find that the bar ellipticities (or axial ratios) in Seyfert galaxies are systematically different from those in nonactive galaxies. Overall, there is a deficiency of bars with large ellipticities (i.e., "thin" or "strong" bars) in Seyfert galaxies compared to nonactive galaxies. Accompanied with a large dispersion due to small number statistics, this effect is strictly speaking at the 2 sigma level. To obtain this result, the active galaxy samples of near-infrared surface photometry were matched to those of normal galaxies in type, host galaxy ellipticity, absolute magnitude, and, to some extent, redshift. We discuss possible theoretical explanations of this phenomenon within the framework of galactic evolution, and, in particular, of radial gas redistribution in barred galaxies. Our conclusions provide further evidence that Seyfert hosts differ systematically from their nonactive counterparts on scales of a few kiloparsecs.  相似文献

New XMM-Newton data of seven Seyfert 2 galaxies with optical spectropolarimet- ric observations are presented. An analysis of the 0.5 - 10 keV spectra shows that four Seyfert 2 galaxies with polarized broad lines (PBLs) are absorbed by NH < 1024 cm-2, while two of three Seyfert 2 galaxies without PBLs show evidence of Compton-thick obscuration, support- ing the conclusion that Seyfert 2 galaxies without PBLs are more obscured than those with PBLs. Adding the measured obscuration indicators (NH, T ratio, and Fe Kα line EW) of six luminous AGNs to our previous sample improves the significance level of the difference in absorption from 92.3% to 96.3% for NH, 99.1% to 99.4% for T ratio, and 95.3% to 97.4% for Fe Kα line EW. The present results support and enhance the suggestions that the absence of PBLs in Seyfert 2 galaxies can be explained by larger viewing angles of the line of sight to the putative dusty torus, which leads to the obscuration of the broad-line scattering screen, as expected in the unification model.  相似文献

Observations with a matrix photometer are reported. The stellar magnitudes in the BVRcIc bands are estimated for 80 comparison stars in the neighborhoods of 10 galaxies with active nuclei: 2 Seyfert galaxies, 4 quasars, and 4 BL Lac objects. The stellar magnitudes of the observed stars range from 11 to 19m.5. For stars with magnitudes of 14–15m the typical photometric errors are 0m.011, 0m.008, 0m.006, and 0m.007 in the B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. The BVRI magnitudes for most of these stars were not known previously. 14′ × 14′ finding charts for these stars are included. These results can be used for differential BVRI photometry of active galactic nuclei. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 1, pp. 57–72 (February 2007).  相似文献

The Unified Model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) predicts that the sole difference between type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies nuclei is the viewing angle with respect to an obscuring structure around the nucleus. High-energy photons above 20 keV are not affected by this absorption if the column is Compton thin, so their 30–100 keV spectra should be the same. However, the observed spectra at high energies appear to show a systematic difference, with type 1 Seyfert galaxies having Γ∼ 2.1 whereas type 2 Seyfert galaxies are harder with Γ∼ 1.9. We estimate the mass and the accretion rate of Seyferts detected in these high-energy samples, and show that they span a wide range in   L / L Edd  . Both black hole binary systems and AGN show a correlation between spectral softness and Eddington fraction, so these samples are probably heterogeneous, spanning a range of intrinsic spectral indices which are hidden in individual objects by poor signal-to-noise ratio. However, the mean Eddington fraction for the type 1 Seyfert galaxies is higher than for the type 2 Seyfert galaxies, so the samples are consistent with this being the origin of the softer spectra seen in type 1 Seyfert galaxies. We stress that high-energy spectra alone are not necessarily a clean test of Unification schemes, but that the intrinsic nuclear properties should also change with   L / L Edd  .  相似文献

The ROSAT Bright Survey (RBS) aims to completely optically identify the more than 2000 brightest sources detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey at galactic latitudes |b| > 30° (excluding LMC, SMC, Virgo cluster). This paper presents a subsample of 66 bright point-like ROSAT survey sources with almost hard PSPC spectra, the hardness ratio HR1 is > 0.5 for most of the sources. Teh subsample could be nearly completely identified by low-resolution optical spectroscopy with the following breakdown into object classes: 31 Seyfert galaxies, 22 BL Lac candidates, 5 clusters of galaxies, 1 cataclysmic variable, and 5 bright stars. Only one object remained unidentified and one X-ray source was a spurious detection. The redshift distrbution peaks around 0.06 for the Seyferts and around 0.13 for the BL Lac candidates. Observations with medium spectral resolution were obtained for most of the new Seyfert galaxies. A large fraction (20 objects) are type 1 Seyfert galaxies, the other fraction includes Seyfert galaxies of type 1.5 – 1.8 (5 objects), two LINERs, and 4 possible narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). About one third of the new Seyfert's have nearby companion galaxies displaying either emission or absorption lines at the same redshift. Among them are a couple of systems showing direct morphological evidence for interaction. The large fraction of interacting galaxies among our sample suggests a scenario where interaction is the main trigger of AGN activity.  相似文献

Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are intriguing owing to their continuum as well as emission-line properties. The observed peculiar properties of the NLS1s are believed to be as a result of an accretion rate close to the Eddington limit. As a consequence of this, for a given luminosity, NLS1s have smaller black hole (BH) masses compared with normal Seyfert galaxies. Here we argue that NLS1s might be Seyfert galaxies in their early stage of evolution and as such may be low-redshift, low-luminosity analogues of high-redshift quasars. We propose that NLS1s may reside in rejuvenated, gas-rich galaxies. We also argue in favour of collisional ionization for production of Fe  ii in active galactic nuclei.  相似文献

The excellent soft X-ray sensitivity of the PSPC detector onboard the ROSAT satellite provided the first chance to study precisely the spectral and timing properties of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies. ROSAT observations of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies have revealed (1) the existence of a giant soft X-ray excess, (2) a striking, clear correlation between the strength of the soft X-ray excess emission and the FWHM of the Hβ line, (3) the general absence of significant soft X-ray absorption by neutral hydrogen above the Galactic column, (4) short doubling time scales down to about 1000 s, (5) the existence of persistent giant (above a factor of 10), and rapid (less than 1 day) X-ray variability in extragalactic sources. The soft X-ray results on Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies indicate that their black hole regions are directly visible, further supporting the Seyfert 1 nature of these objects. The extreme X-ray properties of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies make them ideal objects for understanding many of the problems raised generally by the Seyfert phenomenon.  相似文献

In this paper, we report our preliminary results on enhanced star formation activity in Seyfert 2 galaxies. By re-analysing the Tully-Fisher relation for Whittle's (1992) sample and for a Seyfert 2s' sample selecting from Veron-Cetty and Veron (1996), we find that (1) almost all Seyfert 2 galaxies with circumnuclear star formation have a ratio of far infrared (FIR) to blue luminosities (LFIR/LB) to be larger than 1/3; (2) for Seyfert 2 galaxies with LFIR/LB > 1/3, the Tuly-Fisher relation is similar to that of the normal spiral galaxies; while for those with LFIR/LB ≥ 1/3, they are significantly different from the normal ones, which confirms Whittle's suggestion of enhanced star formation activities in the circumnuclear regions of these Seyfert 2 galaxies. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Relationships between jet physics and the evolutionary phases of radio galaxies are discussed. This includes the connection between the properties of relativistic jets and the Fanaroff–Riley classes of radio galaxies and the interaction of jets with the interstellar medium in Gigahertz Peak Spectrum and Compact Steep Spectrum Radio Sources. Jets in Seyfert galaxies are compared with those in classical radio galaxies and recent work suggesting that there are major differences between the two types of jets is summarized. The proposed major differences are principally that Seyfert jets are thermally dominated with subrelativistic speeds whereas Radio Galaxy jets are relativistic electron/positron flows. Hence, the production of jets in Seyferts and radio galaxies are fundamentally different.  相似文献
