Surface sediments from intertidal Bohai Bay were sampled for the geochemical and environmental assessment of six trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn). Results indicate that sediment grain size plays an important role in controlling the distribution and fractionation of them. Metal concentrations in clayey silt sediments are all clearly higher than in sand and silty sand ones. Cd and Pb in clayey silt sediments are more mobile than in sand and silty sand ones. Two sediment quality guidelines and two geochemical normalization methods (index of geoaccumulation and enrichment factor) were used to judge the potential risk and accumulation of metals. According to the mean probable effects level quotient, the combination of studied metals may have a 21% probability of being toxic. The sediments with high fraction of clay and silt have been contaminated by trace metals to various degrees, among which Cr contributes the most to contamination.  相似文献

The sediment load of the Yangtze River (China) is decreasing because of construction of dams, of which the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) is the best known example. The rate of the decline in sediment load is well known, but changes in the sediment grain size distribution have not been given much attention. The TGD mostly traps sand and silt while clay is flushed through the reservoir. A large amount of sand is available in the Yangtze River downstream of the reservoir, and therefore the pre-dam sand concentration is not substantially reduced. The availability of silt on the Yangtze River bed is limited, and it is expected that most silt will be removed from the riverbed within one to two decades. In order to evaluate the impact of the change in grain size distribution on the tidal flats of the Yangtze Estuary, a highly schematized tidal flat model is setup. This model broadly reveals that the observed deposition rates are exceptionally large because of the high sediment concentration, the abundance of silt, the seasonal dominance of waves (shaping a concave profile), and the offshore tidal asymmetry. The model further suggests that deposition rates will be limitedly influenced by reductions in clay or fine silt but strongly impacted by reductions in median to coarse silt. The response of the downstream morphology to reservoir sedimentation therefore strongly depends on the type of trapped sediment. As a consequence, silt-dominated rivers, such as the Yangtze River and the Yellow River may be more strongly impacted than sand-dominated systems.  相似文献

Dredged spoil (DS) was used as a silt and clay additive in the construction of artificial tidal flats from mountain sand (MS). As the ratio of DS in the sediment media increased, the number of emerging macrobenthos increased. The composition of the macrobenthic community was also affected by the addition of DS, and the changes might be dependent on the ratio of DS to MS. In addition, the macrobenthos in the artificial tidal flats was more abundant than that in the control tidal flat, which was constructed with natural tidal flat sediment. With a silt and clay content of 25%, polychaetes Ceratonereis erythraeensis and Capitella sp. and the gastropod Batillaria cumingii were dominant, whereas no bivalves were present. With less silt and clay (5% and 10%), the bivalves Ruditapes philippinarum and Musculista senhousia were observed in the artificial flats, while their numbers in the control tidal flat were lower.  相似文献

Sediment fences are often used to monitor hillslope erosion, but these can underestimate sediment yields due to overtopping of runoff and associated sediment. We modified four sediment fences to collect and measure the runoff and sediment that overtopped the fence in addition to the sediment deposited behind the fence. Specific objectives were to: (1) determine the catch efficiency of sediment fences measuring post-fire hillslope erosion; (2) assess particle sorting of sand, silt/clay, and organic matter from each hillslope through the sediment fence and subsequent runoff collection barrels; (3) evaluate how catch efficiency and particle size sorting relate to site and rainfall-runoff event characteristics; and (4) use runoff simulations to estimate sediment fence volumes for future post-fire monitoring. Catch efficiency ranged from 28 to 100% for events and 38 to 94% per site for the entire sampling season, indicating a relatively large underestimation of sediment yields by sediment fences. Most of the eroded sediment had similar proportions of sand and silt/clay as the hillslope soils, but the sediment behind the fence was significantly enriched in sand while the sediment that overtopped the fence was more strongly enriched in silt/clay. The sediment fences had capacities of 3 m3 for hillslopes of 0.19–0.43 ha, but simulations of runoff for 2- to 100-year storms indicate that the sediment fences would need a capacity of up to 240 m3 to store all of the runoff and associated sediment. More accurate measurements of sediment yields with sediment fences require either increasing the storage capacity of the sediment fence(s) to accommodate the expected volume of runoff and sediment, reducing the size of the contributing area, or directly measuring the runoff and sediment that overtop the fence. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A method for collecting suspended sediment samples has been developed that pumps a discharge-weighted volume of water from fixed depths at four to 40 locations across a river and separates the suspended sediment in the sample using a continuous-flow centrifuge. The efficacy of the method is evaluated by comparing the particle size distributions of sediment collected by the discharge-weighted pumping method with the particle size distributions of sediment collected by depth integration and separated by gravitational settling. The pumping method was found to undersample the suspended sand sized particles (> 63 μm) but to collect a representative sample of the suspended silt and clay sized particles (< 63 μm). The centrifuge separated the silt and clay sized particles (< 63 μm) into three fractions. Based on the average results of processing 17 samples from the Mississippi River and several of its large tributaries in 1990, about 10% of the silt and clay sized material was trapped in a centrifuge bowl-bottom sealing unit containing the nozzle and consisted of mostly medium and coarse silt from 16 to 63 μm. About 74% was retained on a Teflon liner in the centrifuge bowl and consisted of sizes from 0–1 to 63 μm. About 9% was discharged from the centrifuge in the effluent and was finer than 0–1 μm. About 7% was lost during the processes of removing the wet sediment fractions from the centrifuge, drying and weighing. The success of the discharge-weighted pumping method depends on how homogeneously the silt and clay sized particles (< 63 μm) are distributed in the vertical direction in the river. The degree of homogeneity depends on the composition and degree of aggregation of the suspended sediment particles.  相似文献

Wind erosion measurements were carried out in Nellis Dunes Recreation Area, southern Nevada, USA. Gross erosion (the total mass of sediment effectively blown away from a surface), gross deposition (the total mass of sediment effectively depositing on a surface) and net erosion (the difference in sediment mass before and after an event) were measured for 1 year, on 17 different types of surfaces developed on loose dune sand, compacted sand, loose silt, compacted and/or aggregated silt, rock‐covered sands and silts, mixtures of sand, silt and clay, exposed petrocalcic horizons, gravelly substrata and bedrock. Results showed that net erosion, which is the type of erosion measured in field and laboratory experiments, strongly differs from gross erosion. Activity on a surface is much higher than classic net erosion measurements suggest. Future studies on wind erosion should better acknowledge the distinction between the two types of process. Also, a grain diameter of maximum susceptibility to wind erosion (‘optimum deflation diameter’) near 70 µm as proposed by the aeolian literature only exists for net wind erosion. No such optimum diameter was found for gross wind erosion within the particle range 0–100 µm delineating the transport modes of suspension and modified saltation. In addition, desert surfaces predominantly composed of sand did not show an optimum deflation diameter (for net erosion) around 70 µm. Instead, there was a preferential grain size around 15 µm at which particles were most vulnerable to net emission. Desert surfaces poor in sand showed the classic value of 70 µm. This suggests that interactions exist between the type of surface and the susceptibility of particles to wind erosion. This study is solely based on field data. Although results are supported by two previous wind tunnel studies, more wind tunnel experiments documenting the interactions between gross erosion and gross deposition are necessary. Total organic carbon(TOC) and grain size distribution(sand, silt, and clay) in the ephemeral Mahi River(western India) sediments were measured to look at their effectiveness in understanding the late Quaternary monsoon conditions.Four sites spread across the alluvial zone and three sites from the estuarine zone were sampled.TOC concentration in the sediments of the alluvial and estuarine zone sites ranged between 0.04 and 0.39%and 0.04 and 0.23%,respectively.It was observed that grain size differed significantly at the alluvial zone sites, whereas an uniform trend was found in the estuarine zone sites. The study indicated that low concentration of TOC and coarse size fractions(sand) in sediments were well correlated with available records of arid/weaker palaeomonsoon periods, whereas higher concentration of TOC and fine grain size fractions(silt + clay) in sediments were well correlated with available records of enhanced palaeomonsoon periods of the ephemeral Mahi River.Uniform concentrations of TOC and fine grain size particles in sediments at the estuarine zone sites are attributed to the backwater in the system, deeper sedimentation,and/or greater decomposition processes. It is concluded that,TOC and grain size distributions in the ephemeraL river sediments are simple and effective parameters to develop an understanding about late Quaternary monsoon conditions in ephemeral rivers.  相似文献

Local areas of fine-grained organic-rich sediments in Eckernforde and Kieler Forde Bays may experience disturbances which cause fluidization of the substrate and create a dense suspension (fluid mud) which exists temporarily as a component of the benthic boundary layer before becoming incorporated into the permanent bottom. Laboratory studies indicate this material behaves rheologically as a non-Newtonian substance, and both shear thinning (pseudoplastic) and shear thickening (dilatant) flow behavior can occur (ofien within the same sample) under low to intermediate shear stresses (2 - 40 Pa) and shear rates (0.46 - 122.49 s^-1). Detailed granulometric analyses (1/4 phi intervals) of the fraction 〈63 μm show differences in the silt/clay ratio (clay 〈2 μm) between the two environments. Little change in the silt/clay ratio is seen in the Kieler Forde sediments (from 0.74 to 0.95); however, at Eckernforde, the ratio changed from 0.73 to 2.19. Fine silt particles are lacking or were removed from the 4 to 16 μm fraction of the Eckernforde but not from the Kieler Forde sediments. Both shear thickening and shear thinning flow was observed in the Eckernforde sediments. Shear thickening flow behavior was not observed in the Kieler Forde sediments. Samples of organic-rich (10 to 20%) interface sediments from both areas were analyzed rheologically prior to, and atier removal of organic matter by H2O2 treatment. Reduction in ‘apparent' viscosity occurred through the entire range of shear rates and stresses, shear thickening behavior was reduced or became nonexistent, and yield stress decreased significantly compared to the natural samples. The differences in yield stress and flow behavior of dense suspensions result primarily from differences in grain size distributions but the role of organic matter on those properties is very significant and adds to the effects of the grain size distribution of the sediment.  相似文献

Five wetlands of temporary-shallow, temporary-deep and permanent-deep types, falling in the inland, channel or stream and riverine drainage basins were studied for their sediment, chemical and textural composition. The content of clay was maximum in the inland type as against the higher content of silt and sand at the channel and riverine sites, respectively. Among the various sediment fractions only the silt particles were distributed along depth gradients. Clay particles were positively correlated with the phosphorus content only, while the organic carbon content was correlated with the levels of calcium and nitrogen in the sediments. Calcium was also positively related to phosphorus, while correlations between all other elements were insignificant. It is concluded that the hydrolytic regime is the major factor determining the nature of wetland sediments.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of the regional flow on the streambed vertical hydraulic conductivity (Kv) within the hyporheic zone in three stream reaches of the Weihe River in July 2016. The streambed Kv with two connected depths was investigated at each test reach. Based on the sediment characteristics, the three test reaches could be divided into three categories: a sandy streambed without continuous silt and clay layer, a sandy streambed with continuous silt and clay layer, and a silt–clay streambed. The results demonstrate that the streambed Kv mainly decreases with the depth at the sandy streambed (without continuous silt and clay layer) and increases with the depth at the other two test reaches. At the sandy streambed (with continuous silt and clay layer) where streambed Kv mainly decreases with the depth, the regional upward flux can suspend fine particles and enhance the pore spacing, resulting in the elevated Kv in the upper sediment layers. At another sandy streambed, the continuous silt and clay layer is the main factor that influences the vertical distribution of fine particles and streambed Kv. An increase in streambed Kv with the depth at the silt/clay streambed is attributed to the regional downward movement of water within the sediments that may lead to more fine particles deposited in the pores in the upper sediment layers. The streambed Kv is very close to the bank in the sandy streambed without continuous silt and clay layer and the channel centre in the other two test reaches. Differences in grain size distribution of the sediments at each test reach exercise a strong controlling influence on the streambed Kv. This study promotes the understanding of dynamics influencing the interactions between groundwater and surface water and provides guidelines to scientific water resources management for rivers.  相似文献

Sediment found in China’s Yangtze and Yellow River systems is characterized by large silt fractions. In contrast to sand and clay, sedimentation and erosion behaviour of silt and silt–clay–sand mixtures is relatively unknown. Therefore, settling and consolidation behaviour of silt-rich sediment from these river systems is analysed under laboratory conditions in specially designed settling columns. Results show that a transition in consolidation behaviour occurs around clay contents of about 10 %, which is in analogy with the transition from non-cohesive to cohesive erosion behaviour. Above this threshold, sediment mixtures consolidate in a cohesive way, whereas for smaller clay percentages only weak cohesive behaviour occurs. The settling behaviour of silt-rich sediment is found to be in analogy with granular material at concentration below 150 g/l. Above 150–200 g/l, the material settles in a hindered settling regime where segregation is limited or even prevented. The results indicate that for modelling purposes, multiple sediment fractions need to be assessed in order to produce accurate modelling results.  相似文献

Water level, sediment heterogeneity, and plant density are important factors that determine plant growth, distribution, and community structure. In the present study, we investigated the effects of these factors on the growth and root characteristics of Carex brevicuspis. We conducted an outdoor experiment to monitor biomass accumulation and allocation, relative root distribution mass ratio, longest root length, and total N and P contents of C. brevicuspis plants. We used a factorial design with two water levels (0 cm and −15 cm relative to the soil surface, named high and low water level treatments, respectively), three sediment types (sand/clay sediment with 0–15 cm of sand and 15–30 cm of clay; mixed sediment with 0–30 cm mixture of sand and clay with 1:1 volumw ratio; and clay/sand sediment with 0–15 cm of clay and 15–30 cm of sand), and three plant densities (88 plants per m2, 354 plants per m2, and 708 plants per m2). Biomass accumulation decreased with increasing plant density and was significantly higher in the low water level and the clay/sand sediment than in the high water level and the other two sediment types. The shoot:root ratio was markedly higher in the high water level than in the low water level and decreased with increasing plant density; further, in the high water level, it was significantly lower in the sand/clay sediment than in the other two sediment types. The relative root distribution mass ratio was markedly higher in the high water level treatments than in the low water level treatments. Further, in the high water level treatments, the relative root distribution mass ratio increased with increasing plant density in the clay/sand sediment and was lower in the sand/clay sediment than in the other two sediment types. The longest root length was significantly lower in the high water level than in the low water level and increased with increasing plant density in the sand/clay sediment in the high water level. Total N content in the plants was influenced only by sediment type; on the other hand, total P content was markedly higher in the high water level than in the low water level. Our data indicate that growth of C. brevicuspis was limited by higher water level, higher density and sand/clay sediment. Plants can increase shoot:root ratio and develop shallow root system to acclimate to high water level and thus could adjust shoot:root ratio and root characteristics, e.g. decrease their shoot:root ratio and allocating more root and increasing root length to the nutrient rich layer to acclimate to conditions of higher density and sediment heterogeneity.  相似文献

Sediment resuspension is an important way for shallow lake internal pollution to interact with the overlying water column, and the pollution risks are reasonably related to the retention of resuspended sediment particles in overlying water. In the current study, the settling of resuspended sediment particles was comprehensively investigated under different disturbances using five urban lake sediments. The results show that the particle size distributions of resuspended sediment from different lakes exhibited similar variations during settling with disturbance, although varied settling times were observed under static conditions.During settling with and without disturbance, sediment particle sizes were mainly within 8-63μm at the initial stage, and were<8μm in the later stages of settling.Based on these settling characteristics, the sediment particle size was divided into sand(>63μm),silt(8-63μm),and very fine silt and clay(<8μm)fractions.Kinetic analysis suggested that sediment settling for different particle sizes could be well described by the first-and second-order kinetic equations, especially when settling was disturbed(r2=0.727-0.999).The retention of resuspended sediment could be enhanced as particle sizes decreased and disturbance intensities increased.Furthermore,a water elutriation method was successfully optimized, with separation efficiencies of 56.1%-83%,to separate sediment particles into the defined three particle size fractions. The chemical compositions of sediment were found to change with different particle sizes.Typically, calcium tended to form large-size sediment, while the total contents of aluminum, iron, magnesium, and manganese showed significantly negative correlations with sediment particle sizes(p<0.01)and tended to distribute in small-size particles(e.g.,<8μm).Overall,the sediment particle size related settling dynamics and physicochemical properties suggested the necessity on determining the pollution of resuspended sediment at different particle sizes for restoration of shallow lakes.  相似文献

Simulated rainfall experiments were performed on bare, undecomposed litter layer and semi-decomposed litter layer slopes with litter biomasses of 0, 50, 100 and 150 g m−2, respectively, to evaluate the effect of the undecomposed layer and semi-decomposed layer of Quercus variabilis litter on the soil erosion process and the particle size distribution of eroded sediment. The undecomposed layer and semi-decomposed layer of litter reduced the runoff rate by 10.91–27.04% and 12.91–36.05%, respectively, and the erosion rate by 13.35–40.98% and 17.16–59.46%, respectively. The percentage of smaller particles (clay and fine silt particles) decreased and the percentage of larger particles (coarse silt and sand particles) increased with an increased rainfall duration on all treated slopes, while the extent of the eroded sediment particle content varied among the treated slopes with the rainfall duration, with bare slopes exhibiting the largest variability, followed by undecomposed litter layer slopes and finally semi-decomposed litter layer slopes. The clay and sand particles were transported as aggregates, and fine silt and coarse silt particles were transported as primary particles. Compared with the original soil, sediment eroded from all treated slopes was mainly enriched in smaller particles. Furthermore, the loss of the smaller particles from the undecomposed litter layer slopes was lower than that from the semi-decomposed litter layer slopes, indicating that the undecomposed litter layer alleviated soil coarsening to some extent. The findings from this study improve our understanding of how litter regulates slope erosion and provide a reference for effectively controlling soil erosion.  相似文献

To evaluate the impact of slope length on sediment yield under different rainfall intensities and land use types on low hill gentle slope, the characteristics of sediment yield process were analyzed based on the field artificial rainfall simulation. For the study, grassland and capsicum slope were taken from Anji county of Zhejiang province, China. Results indicated that rainfall intensity had stronger influence than slope length on sediment yield in south region. For capsicum slope, sediment yield increased quickly with increasing slope length when rainfall intensity greater than 90 mm h–1. The slope length had no significant effect on sediment yield when rainfall intensity less than or equaled to 90 mm h–1. For grassland, data from experiments indicated that sediment yield increased slowly with increasing slope length under rainfall intensity less than 120 mm h–1. There was a decreasing tendency of sediment yield at 6 m slope length under all rainfall events. It was concluded from particle size analysis of erosional sediment that silt and clay particles <0.02 mm were always preferentially transported on both capsicum slope (silt 47.1%, clay 40.9%) and grassland (silt 38.3%, clay 35.9%). We hope these results are useful for soil and water conservation and land management.  相似文献

Water depth, salinity, current, and suspended sediment concentration(SSC)were measured along with the grain size distribution of bed sediment along an estuarine longitudinal section. The floc size increased with increase in the percentage of clay and silt, while decreased with increase in the percentage of sand content of bed sediment. The turbulent shear,G,had a direct effect on floc size with its value increasing with increase in G up to a G value of 15 s-1,while an inverse relation existed between floc size and G at higher G(G>15 s-1).Further,higher turbulence enabled sand to get resuspended and cause additional shear leading to the break-up of flocs. An attempt was made to modify G to account for the combined effect of water turbulence(G)and shear imparted by sand(Ga)and the impact of the modification of G on the predictability of floc size was evaluated.A new model was developed which explains floc size in terms of sediment concentration(C),salinity gradient(S),and G for different scenarios based on the value of G.Sensitivity analysis was done for observed floc size(FS)and predicted floc size using four approaches:(I)FSαCx;(II)FSαCxS-y;(III)FSαCxS-yGz for G<15 s-1and FSαCxS-yG-z for G>15 s-1;and(IV)FSαCxS-yGm-zfor G>15 s-1and Gm=G+Ga,where x,y,and z are determined by calibration. It was observed that the predictability of the floc size improved when the turbulence was modified to account for shear imparted by sand so that the coefficient of determination was increased from 0.78 for model III to 0.89 for model IV.Further, the settling velocity was expressed as a function of suspended sediment concentration, turbulent shear, and salinity gradient. The predictability of settling velocity was improved(R2 increased from 0.77 to 0.86)when the additional turbulence created by sand was incorporated in the non-dimensional empirical equation. The study highlights the influence of sand in causing the break-up of flocs and suggests that for turbulence shear values high enough to resuspend sand, and G has to be modified to account for the additional shear imparted by sand in mixed sediment estuarine environments.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of sand transport characteristics is an important issue in aeolian research. Surface characteristics affect sand transport processes, but their effects are not yet fully understood. To provide more data on this subject, we observed sand transport in 16 field experiments above surfaces covered by fine, medium and coarse sand. The sand transport rate over relatively coarser‐grained medium and coarse surfaces could be expressed as a Gaussian peak function: q z = a + b exp (?0.5[(|z – C h|)/d ]e), where q z is the measured sediment transport at height z above the bed and a , b , C h, d , and e are regression coefficients. The measured sand transport flux peak values (H h) were linearly related to C h, and both values were significantly related to the mean surface grain size. However, for the relatively finer‐grained medium and fine sand surfaces, the sediment transport could be expressed as an exponential function. The cumulative sand transport below 0.1 m was directly related to the mean surface grain size, and the relationship could be expressed as the following exponential function: C z = f + g exp –M z/i , where C z is the cumulative sand transport at height z above the bed, M z is the mean grain size and f , g , and i are regression coefficients. Above 0.1 m, there were no significant relationships between the cumulative sand transport and the mean surface grain size. The mean grain size decreased with increasing height below the peak height and then increased with increasing height. The surface grain size distribution and proportions of the particles in different grain size categories controlled the mean grain size as a function of height. The observed changes in the sand transport rate and grain size with height will provide support for sand disaster mitigation, numerical modelling and studies of dune formation. The distribution of grain size parameters along 11 km stretch of the beach sediments between Karikal and Nagore, reveals that the mean grain size exhibits a marked decreasing trend on either side of the mouth of the Tirumalairajanar River which flow from west to east. The sediments are mainly of medium to coarse grained, moderately sorted,near-symmetrical skewed to fine skewed and leptokurtic to mesokurtic in nature.Interrelationship of various parameters shows bimodal nature of sediments having dominance of medium to coarse sand. The major part of the sediment fall in a coarse to fine grained category(sand and silt).Based on the CM(Coarser one percentile value in micron) pattern, the sediment fall in rolling and suspension field. These factors includes the sediments discharged from the river mixes with offshore sediments and with the sediments eroded from a source rock. The effect of wave sorting, and the northward drifting of sediments by littoral current are understandable. Results indicate that the Tirumalairajanar River is the most important source for modern sediments in the study area. The agitation by waves is an important sorting mechanism in the study area, and the net sediment transport in the study area is northward. The findings are based on the grain sizes and also corroborated by shortterm observations of the beach sediment dynamics and transport during the monsoon and summer seasons between Karaikal and Nagore region.  相似文献

Effects of silt loading on turbulence and sand transport   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The transport of bed material and fluid turbulence are affected by many factors, including the fine sediment load being carried in a channel.Current research has focused on sand-sized particles introduced to gravel beds, while the effect of silt load on sand transport has received less attention. Experiments on the effects of silt load,in concentrations 0-26,900 mg l-1,on sand transport were performed with a recirculating laboratory flume using three different sand bed configurations:ripples (Fr=0.24),dunes(Fr=0.34),and dunes(Fr=0.48).Three Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters were arranged to measure flow and turbulence quantities simultaneously in one vertical.Sand transport did not change in a consistent manner with increasing silt load, increasing up to 4,000 mg l-1 for dunes (Fr=0.48) and up to 2,000 mg l-1 for dunes(Fr=0.34) and then declining to near the clear water case with increasing silt concentrations.Silt addition for the ripple case caused a relatively small change in sand transport, decreasing with added silt up to approximately 2,000 mg l-1 and then increasing as silt went up to approximately 10,000 mg l-1.Dunes(Fr=0.48) decreased in length and height as silt increased, while dunes(Fr=0.34) did not show a consistent trend.A clear trend of decreasing Reynolds stress with increasing silt concentration was observed in the ripple case, with a 33% reduction in near-bed Reynolds stress caused by an 8,900 mg l-1 concentration of silt.  相似文献
