We report here a study of various solar activity phenomena occurring in both north and south hemispheres of the Sun during solar cycles 8–23. In the study we have used sunspot data for the period 1832–1976, flare index data for the period 1936-1993, Hα flare data 1993–1998 and solar active prominences data for the period 1957–1998. Earlier Verma reported long-term cyclic period in N-S asymmetry and also that the N-S asymmetry of solar activity phenomena during solar cycles 21, 22, 23 and 24 will be south dominated and the N-S asymmetry will shift to north hemisphere in solar cycle 25. The present study shows that the N-S asymmetry during solar cycles 22 and 23 are southern dominated as suggested by Verma.  相似文献

In this article we present the results of a study of the spatial distribution and asymmetry of solar active prominences (SAP) for the period 1996 through 2007 (solar cycle 23). For more meaningful statistical analysis we analyzed the distribution and asymmetry of SAP in two subdivisions viz. Group1 (ADF, APR, DSF, CRN, CAP) and Group2 (AFS, ASR, BSD, BSL, DSD, SPY, LPS). The North – South (N – S) latitudinal distribution shows that the SAP events are most prolific in the 21° to 30° slice in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres; the East – West (E – W) longitudinal distribution study shows that the SAP events are most prolific (best observable) in the 81° to 90° slice in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. It was found that the SAP activity during this cycle is low compared to previous solar cycles. The present study indicates that during the rising phase of the cycle the number of SAP events are roughly equal in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. However, activity in the Southern Hemisphere has been dominant since 1999. Our statistical study shows that the N – S asymmetry is more significant then the E – W asymmetry.  相似文献

The analysis of the daily measurements of the coronal green line intensity, which have been extensively tested for homogeneity and freedom of trends observed at the Pic-du-Midi observatory during the period 1944–1974, has revealed some characteristic asymmetric variations. A north-south asymmetry of the green line intensity is the main feature of the period 1949–1971 while a south-north one is obvious within 1972–1974 and the minor statistical significance span 1944–1948. On the other hand a significant W-E asymmetry has been confirmed in the whole period 1944–1974. It is noteworthy that the period 1949–1971, where the N-S asymmetry takes place consists a 22-yr solar cycle which starts from the epoch of the solar magnetic field inversion of the solar cycle No. 18 and terminates in the relevant epoch of the cycle No. 20.The combination of N-S and S-N asymmetry with a W-E one makes the NW solar-quarter to appear as the most active of all in the 22-yr cycle 1949–1971, while in the periods 1944–1948 and 1972–1974 the SW quarter is the most active. Finally, from the polar distribution of the green line intensity has been derived that the maximum values of the asymmetries occur in heliocentric sectors ± 10°–20° far from the solar equator on both sides of the central meridian.Physical mechanisms which could contribute to the creation of both N-S and E-W asymmetries of the solar activity and the green line intensity as an accompanied event, like different starting time of an 11-yr solar cycle in the two solar hemispheres, the motion of the Sun towards the Apex, and short-lived active solar longitudes formed by temporal clustering of solar active centers, have been discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a study of the N-S asymmetry in sudden disappearances (SD) of solar prominences during solar cycles 18–21, obtained as a part of a more extensive research on SD and reappearances during years 1931–1985 (Ballester, 1984). As can be seen, the N-S SD asymmetry curve is not in phase with the solar cycle and peaks about the time of solar minimum, the asymmetry reverses in sign during the solar maximum, being, this change of sign, coincident with the reversal of the Sun's magnetic dipole. The SD asymmetry curve can be fitted by a sinusoidal function with a period of eleven years. On the other hand, the SD asymmetry curve shows a strong coincidence with the N-S asymmetries presented by other solar activity manifestations as studied by different authors.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of studies of the asymmetries (N-S and E-W) for different manifestations of solar activity events (sunspot groups, H flares and active prominences/filaments) during the maximum-phase (1989–1991) of solar cycle 22. During the period considered, the results obtained show the existence of a real N-S asymmetry, whereas the E-W asymmetry may exist only for H flares. There is no definite relationship between the asymmetries and the occurrence of events; however, around low activity sometimes we find enhanced asymmetry, and low asymmetry around high activity. Our study suggests a good agreement with similar studies made by others.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of a study of the asymmetry of the solar active prominences (SAP) at low (≤40°) and high (≥50°) latitudes, respectively, from 1957 through 1998 (solar cycles 19–22). A quantitative analysis of the hemispheric distribution of the SAP is given. We found that the annual hemispheric asymmetry indeed exists at low latitudes, but strangely, a similar asymmetry does not seem to occur for SAPs at high latitudes. We found that the north–south (N–S) asymmetry of the solar active prominences at high latitudes is always north dominated during solar cycles 19–22 while the N–S asymmetry of the SAPs at low latitudes is shifted to a dominance in the southern hemisphere for solar cycle 21 and remains south dominated even in cycle 22. Thus, the hemispheric asymmetry of the solar active prominences at high latitudes in a cycle appears to have little connection with the asymmetry of the solar activity at low latitudes.  相似文献

This paper tries to cast additional evidence on the proposed periodic behaviour of the N-S asymmetry in sudden disappearances (SD) of solar prominences (Vizoso and Ballester, 1987). We have performed a Blackman-Tukey power spectrum of the values of the SD N-S asymmetry and the results shows a significant peak, above 95% confidence level, at 12.4 years, another peak at 2.3 years fails to be statistically significant. Moreover, power spectrum performed with the values of N-S asymmetry of flare number and flare index (Vizoso and Ballester (1987) display significant peaks, above 95% confidence level, around 3.1–3.2 years.  相似文献

We analysed the green-line coronal intensities (530.3 nm, Fexiv), both their time- latitudinal distribution as well as the coronal index of solar activity (CI) over the period 1996–2002. Maximum values of the CI (smoothed) were observed in mid-August 2001, even though the `first' peak was observed in the period January–April 2000. The maximum of the Wolf number occurred in 2000, April – July, and the `second peak' occurred in December 2001–March 2002. Both indices have a similar course in the cycle, but their maxima are shifted by 1.5 year. There was high correlation between CI and Wolf number, the 2800 MHz radio flux, the X-ray 0.1–0.8 nm flux and cosmic-ray flux. The CI values in present cycle 23 are lower than those of the two former solar cycles 21 and 22 by about 1/3. Polar branches, which separated from the principal equatorward branch at mid-latitudes in the cycle minimum, 1996, reached the poles around 2000. The new principal branch for cycle 24 split in 2001, turned over around ±60° in 2002.5 and moves to the equator, where it will end in 2019. Minimum between cycles 23 and 24 will occur around 2007.5, cycle maximum 24 around 2012.5. Poleward branches in cycle 24 will reach the solar poles in 2011.  相似文献

This paper presents the study of normalized north–south asymmetry, cumulative normalized north–south asymmetry and cumulative difference indices of sunspot areas, solar active prominences (at total, low (?40°) and high (?50°) latitudes) and Hα solar flares from 1964 to 2008 spanning the solar cycles 20–23. Three different statistical methods are used to obtain the asymmetric behavior of different solar activity features. Hemispherical distribution of activity features shows the dominance of activities in northern hemisphere for solar cycle 20 and in southern hemisphere for solar cycles 21–23 excluding solar active prominences at high latitudes. Cumulative difference index of solar activity features in each solar cycle is observed at the maximum of the respective solar cycle suggesting a cyclic behavior of approximately one solar cycle length. Asymmetric behavior of all activity features except solar active prominences at high latitudes hints at the long term periodic trend of eight solar cycles. North–south asymmetries of SAP (H) express the specific behavior of solar activity at high solar latitudes and its behavior in long-time scale is distinctly opposite to those of other activity features. Our results show that in most cases the asymmetry is statistically highly significant meaning thereby that the asymmetries are real features in the N–S distribution of solar activity features.  相似文献

Intermediate-term periodicities in solar activity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The presence of intermediate-term periodicities in solar activity, at approximately 323 and 540 days, has been claimed by different authors. In this paper, we have performed a search for them in the historical records of two main indices of solar activity, namely, the daily sunspot areas (cycles 12–21) and the daily Zürich sunspot number (cycles 6–21). Two different methods to compute power spectra have been used, one of them being especially appropriate to deal with gapped time series. The results obtained for the periodicity near 323 days indicate that it has only been present in cycle 21, while in previous cycles no significant evidence for it has been found. On the other hand, a significant periodicity at 350 days is found in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number during cycles 12–21 considered all together, also having been detected in some individual cycles. However, this last periodicity must be looked into with care due to the lack of confirmation for it coming from other features of solar activity. The periodicity around 540 days is found in cycles 12, 14, and 17 in sunspot areas, while during cycles 18 and 19 it is present, with a very high significance, in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number. It also appears at 528 days in sunspot areas during cycles 12–21. On the other hand, it is important to note the coincidence between the asymmetry, favouring the northern hemisphere, of sunspot areas and solar flares during cycle 19, and the fact that the periodicity at 540 days was only present, with high significance, in that hemisphere during that solar cycle.  相似文献

Poleward migration of the magnetic neutral line on the Sun has been calculated for the periods 1945–1950 and 1955–1981 using synoptic charts based on H observations. Epochs of sign reversal of the solar magnetic field at latitudes 50° to 90° have been determined for these periods. During the cycles 19 and 20 a threefold sign reversal took place in the northern hemisphere. During all the above cycles both the solar poles were of one polarity for a period ranging from 0.5 to 1 year. The poleward drift velocity of the magnetic neutral line varies from 6 to 29 m s–1 and seems to depend on the strength of the cycle.  相似文献

It is shown that during the present solar cycle (No-20), the 5303 coronal intensity at heliographic latitudes between 15°–40° in both hemispheres had two maxima. The first maximum occurred in 1967–68 and the second in 1969–70. At lower latitudes ( ± 10°) there was only one clear maximum in 1970. These results are in good agreement with those of Gnevyshev (1967) for the previous solar cycle. The North-South asymmetry of 5303 intensity for the period 1957–1970 is studied and its implications to solar-terrestrial relationships are discussed. It is shown that during the period studied, the N-S asymmetry of 5303 intensity is negatively correlated with sunspot activity.  相似文献

A list of nearly 350 flares accompanied by type IV radio bursts by Krüger et al. (1971), which covers a period of 14 yr (1956–1969), was expanded to include all PCA and solar cosmic ray events during this entire period. This list, which includes practically all of the most energetic events during the maxima of two consecutive solar cycles, was used to investigate the latitudinal distribution of the above-mentioned flares, as well as of all PCA events, solar cosmic ray events and plage regions associated with them.Histograms of these occurences show clearly the appearance of two peaks in both solar maxima, which confirm the observations of Gnevyshev (1967). Latitudinal analysis of these histograms shows that in cycle 20 the two peaks are independent and their relative strength varies strongly with latitude. In cycle 19, however, this effect is not clearly evident, possibly because of the extremely high level of activity during this cycle. In both cycles, the second maximum shows the highest concentration of the most energetic events.During 1971–1972 visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the National University of Athens, Athens, Greece.  相似文献

A correlation analysis shows that the sunspot numbers at the peaks of the last eight solar cycles are well-correlated with the sunspot numbers in heliolatitudes 20°–40° (specially in the southern hemisphere) occurring in the solar minimum years immediately preceding the solar maximum years. On leave from Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India.  相似文献

We have developed a non-subjective technique for recording the occurrences of coronal mass ejection (CME) in data recorded by the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph experiment (LASCO) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft (SOHO). We have found evidence for, and quantified, an asymmetry in the apparent longitudes at which mass ejections occurred during the first year of LASCO synoptic observations and coinciding with the 1996–1997 solar minimum. Throughout this period the solar surface could loosely be characterized as having both an active and a quiet hemisphere and the observed mass ejection asymmetry is seen to relate closely with the longitudes of most persistent disc activity. However, our best estimate for the centroid of the CME distribution is 45 deg to the west of the brightest regions visible in Fe 195 Å emission on the disc and in an area of reduced coronal emission. This corresponds to the location of a trans-equatorial extension of the northern coronal hole which persisted to some degree throughout the year and was directly associated with the most active region on the disc. We suggest that this indicates magnetic reconnection, which is necessary at the boundaries of coronal holes to maintain their quasi-rigid rotation above the differentially rotating photosphere, could play an important role in triggering the destabilization of nearby structures and result in the observed prevalence of mass ejections. We estimate that the events included in the study could contribute around 8% to the total solar mass loss through the solar wind (which is around 1014 kg day–1) and find a scale of asymmetry indicating that close to 70% of this mass is ejected from within a single hemisphere.  相似文献

The time variation and latitude dependence of the solar rotation are found using observational data on Hα filaments and compact magnetic features with different polarities during solar activity cycles 20 and 21 (1966–1985). Statistical analysis of the observational data shows that there is a north–south asymmetry in the rotation, both for the Hα filaments and for compact magnetic features (structures) with negative and positive polarities. The N-S asymmetry in the differential rotation of the Hα filaments and the compact magnetic features with both polarities shows up quite distinctly in solar activity cycles 20 and 21, but the asymmetry for the compact magnetic features with positive polarity is comparatively lower in cycle 21. The confidence level is lower the compact magnetic features with positive polarity than for the compact magnetic features with negative polarity.  相似文献

Time–frequency variability of the solar mean magnetic field (SMMF) was studied, based on a continuous wavelet analysis. The rotational modulation of the SMMF dominates the wavelet spectrum at 27–30 and 13.5-day time scales. The rotational variation, in turn, is amplitude-modulated by the quasi-biennial periodicity in the SMMF. This is caused by magnetic field eruptions. Rigidly rotating modes appear in the time–longitude distribution of the large-scale magnetic field that is plotted from a deconvolution of the SMMF time series with a Carrington period. These rotational modes coexist and transform into one another over an 11-yr cycle. The modes with periods of 27.8–28.0 days dominate the phase of activity rise, whereas the 27-day rotational mode dominates the declining phase of the 11-yr cycle. The rotational modes with periods of 29–30 days occurred episodically. Most of the features in the time–longitude distribution of the SMMF are identifiable with those in similar diagrams of the solar background magnetic fields. They represent a combined effect of the background magnetic fields from both hemispheres. Eruptions of magnetic fields lead to dramatic changes in the picture of solar rotation and correlate well with the polarity asymmetry in the SMMF signal. The polarity asymmetry in the SMMF time series exhibits both long-term changes and a 22-yr cyclic behaviour, depending on the reversals of the global magnetic field in cycles 20–23.  相似文献

The properties of the differential rotation of the Sun are investigated by using H filaments as tracers. Annual average angular velocities of 716 quiescent filaments are determined from H photoheliograms of the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory film collection for the years 1957–1993. The existence of north-south (N–S) asymmetry in H filaments rotation is confirmed statistically. The connection of asymmetry with the solar activity cycles is established. It is found that the northern hemisphere rotates faster during the even cycles (20 and 22) while the rotation of southern hemisphere dominates in odd ones (cycles 19 and 21). The mechanism of the solar activity should be responsible for the N–S asymmetry of the solar differential rotation. A theoretical explanation for the N–S asymmetry in the Suns rotation is offered. It is suggested that the asymmetry in the rotation of the two hemispheres of the Sun is balanced by the dynamo mechanism, which acts in parallel to the mechanism offered here. It is concluded that the N–S asymmetry of the solar rotation should cause a difference in activity level between the northern and southern hemispheres.  相似文献

Prominences, in contrast to other solar activity features, may appear at all heliographic latitudes. The position of zones where prominences are mainly concentrated depends on the cycle phase of solar activity. It is shown, for prominence observations made at Lomnický tít over the period 1967–1996, how the position of prominence zones changes over a solar cycle, and how these zones could be connected with other solar activity features. Our results obtained could be an additional source to do a better prediction of solar activity. Time-latitudinal distribution is also shown for the green corona (Fexiv, 530.3 nm). Distribution of the green coronal maxima shows that there are equator-migrating zones in the solar corona that migrate from latitudes of 45° (starting approximately 2–3 years after the cycle start) to higher latitudes 70°, and then turn (around the cycle maximum) towards the equator, reaching the equator in the next minimum (this duration lasts 18–19 years). Polar branches separate from these zones at the cycle minimum (2–3 years before above-mentioned zones) at latitudes of 50°, reaching the poles at the maximum of the present cycle. The picture becomes dim when more polar prominence zones are observed. Prominences show both the poleward and equatorward migration. Comparison between both solar activity features is also discussed.  相似文献

Long-term cyclic variations in the distribution of prominences and intensities of green (530.3 nm) and red (637.4 nm) coronal emission lines over solar cycles 18–23 are presented. Polar prominence branches will reach the poles at different epochs in cycle 23: the north branch at the beginning in 2002 and the south branch a year later (2003), respectively. The local maxima of intensities in the green line show both poleward- and equatorward-migrating branches. The poleward branches will reach the poles around cycle maxima like prominences, while the equatorward branches show a duration of 18 years and will end in cycle minima (2007). The red corona shows mostly equatorward branches. The possibility that these branches begin to develop at high latitudes in the preceding cycles cannot be excluded.  相似文献
