The geochemical history of Lake Lisan, the Pleistocene precursor of the Dead Sea, has been studied by geological, chemical and isotopic methods.Aragonite laminae from the Lisan Formation yielded (equivalent) Sr/Ca ratios in the range 0.5 × 10?2?1 × 10?2, Na/Ca ratios from 3.6 × 10?3 to 9.2 × 10?3, δ18OPDB values between 1.5 and 7%. and δ13CPDB from ?7.7 to 3.4%..The distribution coefficient of Na+ between aragonite and aqueous solutions, λANa, is experimentally shown to be very sensitive to salinity and nearly temperature independent. Thus, Na/Ca in aragonite serves as a paleosalinity indicator.Sr/Ca ratios and δ18O values in aragonite provide good long-term monitors of a lake's evolution. They show Lake Lisan to be well mixed, highly evaporated and saline. Except for a diluted surface layer, the salinity of the lake was half that of the present Dead Sea (15 vs 31%).Lake Lisan evolved from a small, yet deep, hypersaline Dead Sea-like, water body. This initial lake was rapidly filled-up to its highest stand by fresh waters and existed for about 40,000 yr before shrinking back to the present Dead Sea. The chemistry of Lake Lisan at its stable stand represented a material balance between a Jordan-like input, an original large mass of salts and a chemical removal of aragonite. The weighted average depth of Lake Lisan is calculated, on a geochemical basis, to have been at least 400, preferably 600 m.The oxygen isotopic composition of Lake Lisan water, which was higher by at least 3%. than that of the Dead Sea, was probably dictated by a higher rate of evaporation.Na/Ca ratios in aragonite, which correlate well with δ13C values, but change frequently in time, reflect the existence of a short lived upper water layer of varying salinity in Lake Lisan.  相似文献

87Sr86Sr ratios have been determined in fifteen volcanic rocks from the northwestern part of the Hellenic arc. They range from 0.7041 to 0.7134. There is no apparent correlation of strontium isotope values with any major chemical component or with Rb/Sr ratios. The 87Sr86Sr ratios appear to increase in a general way with increasing depth to the Benioff zone. The strontium isotope ratios are higher than from most island arcs; this is believed to be due to contamination.  相似文献

Speleothem from West Virginia, ranging in age from 2000 to 200,000 yr B.P. contains uranium with U234U238 ratios significantly greater than unity. This ratio varies from one speleothem to another, as does average U content. Initial ratios, corrected for age, are remarkably constant for a given speleothem. By contrast, U234U238 ratios in seepage waters vary significantly from month to month at a given drip site, and their average values differ from that of the speleothem which they are depositing. This discrepancy is attributed either to long-term averaging-out of fluctuations, or fractional precipitation on the speleothem of a chemical species of uranium with a more constant ratio. Constancy of initial U234U238 ratios from Th230U234. datable portions of speleothems should permit U234U238-dating of older portions of the same speleothem, back to about 106 yr B.P., with estimated precision of ±5 per cent.  相似文献

We have determined 87Sr86Sr ratios of the Tethys Sea by analyzing limestones of Permian to Late Cretaceous age from the overthrusted sequence of central and northern Euboea. The results are in satisfactory agreement with ratios obtained by other investigators on unreplaced fossil shells of similar age collected elsewhere. The 87Sr86Sr ratios of Mesozoic marbles from the autochtone metamorphic rocks of southern Euboea are more variable, perhaps because of increases in this ratio during regional metamorphism. Nevertheless, the lowest values of suites of isochronous samples may approach the correct ratio. Four samples of the Argyron Marble taken at different localities in southern Euboea and on the Attic peninsula have a concordant 87Sr86Sr ratio of 0.70688±0.00006 (1 \?gs), relative to 0.7080 for the Eimer and Amend isotope standard. This value indicates a Jurassic age for this formation even though the fragmentary fossil evidence favors a Late Cretaceous (Turonian) age.  相似文献

Pleistocene and Recent lavas from the Sunda arc range from those showing affinities with the island arc tholeiitic series, through a spectrum of calc-alkaline to high-K alkaline rocks. The tholeiitic rocks have relatively low 87Sr86Sr ratios averaging 0–7043; the calc-alkaline rocks show a wide range (from 0.7038 to 0.7059, averaging 0.7048); the high-K alkaline rocks average 0.7045. A rhyolitic ignimbrite from Sumatra has an 87Sr86Sr ratio of 0.7139.The relationship between 87Sr86Sr and major and trace element geochemistry is variable and complex. Lavas from the same volcano sometimes show significant differences in 87Sr86Sr despite close geochemical relationships. Rocks of the calc-alkaline suite show a regular decrease in 87Sr86Sr from West Java to Bali and there is some evidence for increasing 87Sr86Sr with increasing depth to the Benioff zone. Calc-alkaline and tholeiitic rocks from the Sunda arc have significantly higher 87Sr86Sr ratios than those from other island arcs, except from those arcs where continental crustal involvement has been inferred (e.g. New Zealand).A model of 87Sr enrichment due to isotopic equilibration of oceanic crust with sea water and disequilibrium melting in the slab and/or mantle is favoured to explain the Sr isotopic composition of the tholeiitic and normal calc-alkaline lavas. Calc-alkaline lavas with high 87Sr86Sr ratios are best explained by either sialic contamination, or the presence of alkali basalt as a component of the downgoing slab. The Sr isotopic data for the high-K alkaline lavas suggest a mantle origin. The high 87Sr86Sr ratio in the Lake Toba rhyolite implies a crustal origin.  相似文献

230Th-238U disequilibrium systematics reveal several important characteristics of the mantle source regions and petrogenesis of volcanic rocks in the presumed hot spots of Hawaii, Marion Island (Prince Edward hot spot), and Samoa. The (230Th232Th) activity ratios of lavas from these three hot spots (1.06 ± 0.07, 1.04 ± 0.08, and 0.81 ± 0.06, respectively) imply that the source regions are each nearly homogeneous with ThU weight ratios of 2.9, 3.0, and 3.8. For Marion Island and Mauna Kea, Hawaii, negligible secular variation occurs in the (230Th232Th) initial ratios. This supports other evidence for very short transfer time between source and surface. Significant residence time at depth prior to eruption cannot be ruled out for the Samoan lavas we have studied; however, the data for one of these flows deviate from the proposed (230Th232Th)-87Sr86Sr correlation (Condomineset al., 1981a) in the opposite sense from that expected for such residence. If it is assumed that the measured (230Th232Th) ratios of the young lavas reflect ThU in their mantle sources, then the observed variations among these three hot spots, combined with those reported by other workers for Iceland, the Azores and Tristan de Cunha, suggest that these sources are characterized by ThU ratios ranging from values similar to that of MORB source (~2.5) to values similar to those of bulk earth (~3.8). Mixing of different proportions of depleted and enriched mantle may be responsible for the observed range.  相似文献

RbSr whole rock analyses have been performed on 2 CI and 3 CM chondrites. Four of these stones (Ivuna, Orgueil, Cold Bokkeveld and Erakot) were previously studied in this laboratory and were shown to be discordant from a 4.6 Gyr isochron. The fifth, Murchison, was not previously studied. The new data support the discordance of the first four stones, and indicate that Murchison is also discordant. Studies of Sr isotope ratios in unspiked Orgueil show that the discordance is not due to inhomogeneities in the Sr84Sr86 ratio caused by incomplete mixing of nucleosynthesis products.In order to gauge the effects of weathering, two leaching experiments were performed on fresh, interior samples of Murchison; one for a period of 1.5 hr and the other for 117 hr. The results indicate that the relative solubility of nonradiogenic Sr is approximately twice that of Rb and radiogenic Sr is more soluble than the nonradiogenic Sr. This gives the residue a lower model age than the whole rock both by increasing the RbSr ratio and by decreasing the Sr87Sr86 ratio. This result is in contrast to that expected from studies of ordinary chondrite finds, which generally show higher model ages than falls. The constancy of KRb and KSr ratios between the two leaching experiments, and their difference from the unaltered whole rock ratios suggest that the bulk ratios are produced by dissolution of a single phase, and the higher radiogenic Sr content by selective leaching of other phases.  相似文献

New analyses of K, Rb, Sr and Ba contents and the 87Sr86Sr ratios of eight amphiboles, one phlogopite, two diopsides and one host alkalic basalt for an amphibole are reported: The samples are mostly inclusions in alkalic basalts and occur in association with peridotite inclusions. Two of the samples are from alpine-type peridotite bodies — one from the Etang de Lhers massif in the French Pyrenees and the other from the Finero massif in the Ivrea zone in northern Italy. The kaersutites come from the following localities: Hoover Dam, Arizona; Deadman Lake, California; Massif Central, France; Queensland; Spring Mountain, New South Wales.The data indicate that kaersutitic amphiboles are genetically unrelated to their host basalts. The isotopic and trace element data of these amphiboles further strengthens the suggestion of BASU and MURTHY (1977) that kaersutites play a significant role in ocean ridge basalt genesis. In addition, pargasitic amphibole with higher 87Sr86Sr ratios, if present, may be important in the source regions of alkalic basalts.The bulk amphibole lherzolite from Lherz has the KRbratio and 87Sr86Sr ratio appropriate for source material of ridge tholeiites. If the diopside and the amphibole in this rock had isotopically equilibrated under upper mantle conditions, the data show the time of last equilibration to be approximately 735 m.y., in contrast to the young emplacement age of the ultramafic massif.The coexisting phlogopite and diopside in the spinel lherzolite inclusion from Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico, show, surprisingly, isotopic equilibration under upper mantle conditions despite their drastically different RbSr ratios. The data show that the phlogopite must have formed very recently in the upper mantle. This phlogopite also has a high KRb ratio (1133), contrary to the commonly held view that mantle phlogopites have low KRb ratios. The coexisting diopside shows high K content (778 ppm) and a lower KRb ratio than the phlogopite. This phlogopite lherzolite has trace elemental and isotopic characteristics that may be adequate for the origin of alkalic basalts upon partial melting.  相似文献

143Nd144Nd ratios measured in Quaternary lavas from Java and the Banda arc of Indonesia range from 0.51242 to 0.51280 and exhibit an inverse correlation with 87Sr86Sr. Isotopically, the Indonesian samples resemble Andean rather than island arc lavas. The samples from Java plot either within, or adjacent to the mantle array, towards higher 87Sr86Sr ratios. Samples from the Banda arc and the anomalous calc-alkaline volcano Papandajan are characterized by relatively low 143Nd144Nd and high 87Sr86Sr ratios. These characteristics are consistent with the interpretation that subducted terrigenous material was involved in the genesis of these lavas. Furthermore the Banda arc samples appear to lie on a mixing line between isotopic compositions characteristic of the mantle and upper continental crust. A high-K trachyte from the alkaline volcano Muriah, Java, has isotopic characteristics of the mantle (143Nd144Nd = 0.51270, 87Sr86Sr = 0.70424), which implies that the extreme enrichment in large-ion-lithophile elements in its source must have occurred only shortly before its formation. The inferred 143Nd144Nd ratio of the unmodified mantle beneath Java and the Banda arc is lower than that observed in mid-ocean ridge basalt, which may have important implications for a better understanding of the geochemical structure of the mantle.  相似文献

We have calculated the total individual ion activity coefficients of carbonate and calcium, γTCO32? and γTCa2+, in seawater. Using the ratios of stoichiometric and thermodynamic constants of carbonic acid dissociation and total mean activity coefficient data measured in seawater, we have obtained values which differ significantly from those widely accepted in the literature. In seawater at 25°C and 35%. salinity the (molal) values of γTCO23? and γTCa2+ are 0.038 ± 0.002 and 0.173 ± 0.010, respectively. These values of γTCO32? and γTCa2+ are independent of liquid junction errors and internally consistent with the value γTCl? = 0.651. By defining γTCa2+ and γTCO32? on a common scale (γTCl?), the product γTCa2+γTCO32? is independent of the assigned value of γCl? and may be determined directly from thermodynamic measurements in seawater. Using the value γTCa2+γTCO32? = 0.0067 and new thermodynamic equilibrium constants for calcite and aragonite, we show that the apparent constants of calcite and aragonite are consistent with the thermodynamic equilibrium constants at 25°C and 35%. salinity. The demonstrated consistency between thermodynamic and apparent constants of calcite and aragonite does not support a hypothesis of stable Mg-calcite coatings on calcite or aragonite surfaces in seawater, and suggests that the calcite critical carbonate ion curve of Broecker and Takahashi (1978, Deep-Sea Research25, 65–95) defines the calcite equilibrium boundary in the oceans, within the uncertainty of the data.  相似文献

Abundances and isotopic compositions of He, Ne, Ar, and Xe have been measured in eight recently fallen chondrites. Ratios of concentrations of cosmic ray-produced 3He, 21Ne, 22Ne and 38Ar indicate that all eight samples experienced less than average cosmic ray shielding. 3He and 21Ne exposure ages were calculated using shielding corrected chondritic production rates and the measured 22Ne21Ne. Exposure ages calculated from 22Na22Ne and 26Al21Ne ratios and constant relative production rates show a bias between the two ages due to variations in 22Na26Al. Arguments are presented that this bias is due to irradiation hardness differences, and therefore the use of constant values for both the 22Na22Ne and 26Al21Ne production ratios is not permitted. Dwaleni, Swaziland, was found to be an unusual gas-rich chondrite with high concentrations of solar-derived He and Ne and planetary-type Xe.  相似文献

The ratios of the carbon isotopes 13C and 12C of twenty-four graphite samples from Bogala Mine, Sri Lanka have been determined. Lead isotope data on late Precambrian igneous rocks from the eastern desert of Egypt are presented. Previous work has indicated that this igneous suite is characterized by uniformly low initial ratios of 37Sr86Sr (< 0.7035). The Pb data define three groups, loosely corresponding to age. An older tonalite to granodiorite (OTG) suite, with ages in the range 610–710 Ma, has Pb isotope characteristics similar to modern, mantle-derived oceanic mafic rocks. The age-corrected initial Pb isotope ratios of the OTG group lie near the “ocean regression line” in correlation diagrams of 206Pb204Pb vs. 207Pb204Pb and 203Pb204Pb. The isotope data imply an origin for the OTG group analogous to calc-alkalic igneous rocks in modern intra-oceanic island arcs.A younger suite of K-rich plutonic rocks (570–595 Ma) has similar 206Pb204Pb and 208Pb204Pb initial ratios relative to the OTG suite, but have higher 207Pb204Pb initial ratios when calculated from measured whole-rock U and Pb contents. However, K-feldspar and galena, associated with this suite, indicate initial Pb isotope ratios close to the OTG suite. We interpret this to indicate that the younger granites could have originated by anatexis of OTG-type material, but they probably experienced an episode of metasomatism after emplacement.A suite of volcanic rocks (the Dokhan Volcanics) from the central eastern desert are intermediate between the younger granites and OTG in both age (~ 610 Ma) and Pb isotope characteristics.Limited data on initial 208Pb204Pb ratios suggest that all the Egyptian samples originated from a source with anomalously low ThPb ratios.Although the relative abundance of granitic rocks in the Egyptian Shield decreases to the south, no evidence of north-south heterogeneity in the Pb isotope composition of the respective source regions is apparent in the data. However, the westernmost sample studied, from the Aswan area, contains distinctly more radiogenic Pb relative to the mean. This location may mark the boundary between the Late Precambrian ensimatic orogen now outcropping in the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian Shields, and an older sialic craton to the west.  相似文献

Two very different sets of 244Pu238U ratios have been reported for early solar system materials. One group of samples yields high (0.015–0.016) ratios (Podosek, 1970a, 1972; Drozd et al., 1977) and calculations based on another group of analyses yield low ratios (~0.004) (Marti et al., 1977). Recently measured partition coefficients for Pu and Sm are used to evaluate the data of Marti et al. and sol244Pu238U ratios from other sources are also considered. A low sol244Pu238U ratio (~0.005) is favored, and some implications of this low ratio to galactic nucleosynthesis and meteorite age dating are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Relationships among Th and Ra isotopes in nodule, sediment and water phases at MANOP Site S establish the most likely source for Th in the nodules, the frequency of nodule turning, and the similarity of micro and macro nodules. Manganese nodules and bottom waters have 230Th232Th activity ratios considerably higher than other phases at this site suggesting that sea water is the likely source of Th for the nodules. Similar 230Th232Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms and in certain cases departure from expected 226Ra230Th activity ratios in nodule tops and bottoms indicate that the nodules rotate every one to ten thousand years. The micro nodules have diffusion coefficients of Ra similar to macro nodule bottoms. I suggest that they may act as a carrier phase for transporting metals through oxic sediments to nodules.  相似文献

A black inclusion from the Krymka LL3 chondrite was analyzed for 20 trace elements and five noble gases, by radiochemical neutron activation and mass spectrometry. The trace element pattern somewhat resembles that of C1 or C2 chondrites, but with several unique features. Elements of nebular condensation T ? 1000 K (U, Re, Os, Ir, Ni, Pd, Au, Sb and Ge) are essentially undepleted, as in C1 chondrites, but ReIr is 1.49 × higher than the characteristic Cl value. Among elements condensing below 1000 K, Cs, Se, Te, and In are depleted to approximately C2 levels (~0.6 × C1), whereas Ag, Bi, Tl are enriched to ~ 1.6 × C1. Such enrichments are thought to be characteristic of late nebular condensates.The noble-gas pattern also is unique. Gas contents are higher than in C1s, by factors of 2.6 to 19 for Ne through Xe. The Ar36Xe132 ratio of 500 is higher than mean values for C1s or C2s (109 or 89) and exceeds even the highest value seen in C3Os, 420, whereas the He4Ne20 ratio of 62 is much lower than the values for C1s and C2s (200–370). The Xe129Xe132 and Xe136Xel32 ratios of 1.040 and 0.320 resemble those of C1 chondrites, and seem to imply typical proportions of radiogenic Xe129 and ‘fissiogenic’ xenon.It appears that the inclusion represents a new primitive meteorite type, similar to C-chondrites, but probably a late condensate from a region of higher nebular pressure.  相似文献

For sulfates of Miocene evaporites in the Carpathian Foredeep, the waters of crystallization of gypsum (w.c.g.) have δD = ?38 to ?113%. and δ18O = 0 to ?11%. (SMOW). The δ34S and δ18O values of the sulfates are uniform and consistent with a marine origin. It is proposed that the original w.c.g. was equilibrated with marine water. Subsequently, it re-equilibrated towards very isotopically light water (δD ~ ?100%., δ18O ~ ?14%) during a glacial or postglacial period and is now trending towards current waters circulating through the deposits (δD ~ ?50%., δ18 ~ ?7%). The extent of reequilibration increased with decreasing crystal size.  相似文献

Twelve samples of mid-Tertiary felsic volcanic rocks from Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí (both belonging to the Sierra Madre Occidental) and one sample of Lower Tertiary porphyritic andesite from Zacatecas are analyzed for 87Sr86Sr, K, Rb, and Sr. Eight selected samples are also analyzed for 143Nd144Nd. A linear regression of the present-day 87Sr86Srand87Rb86Sr of the felsic volcanic rocks in Zacatecas gives an approximate date of 30 ± 8 Ma. The initial 87Sr86Sr ratios are high and widely distributed (from 0.705 to 0.712 or higher) whereas the initial 143Nd144Nd ratios are somewhat low and show a narrow range (0.5125–0.5127). The available isotopic and trace-element data are best explained in terms of a binary mixing model in which the magmas derived from a slightly depleted-mantle fractionate and mix with varying proportions of the overlying middle/upper continental crust and undergo further shallow-level fractional crystallization before eruption. This model is also compatible with the trace-element and Sr isotopic data published from other areas of the Sierra Madre Occidental for which a purely mantle origin has been proposed.  相似文献
