The gravitational radiation from millisecond pulsars owing to glitches in their angular velocity is examined. It is assumed that the energy transferred from interior superfluid regions to the crust of a neutron star is converted into gravitational wave energy by damping oscillations of the matter in the star. The gravitational wave intensity and amplitude are calculated for fourteen millisecond pulsars. Gravitational radiation can explain the observed spin-down of millisecond pulsars and an estimate is given for the magnetic field at which the proposed mechanism predominates in the spin-down of these pulsars. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 3, pp. 479–486 (August 2008).  相似文献

In this paper we give general relativistic expressions for the angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy of slowly rotating stars. These expressions contain contributions from the presure, gravitational red shift, and Doppler shift, and the motion of inertial frames. These contributions are not negligible, e.g., there are stable neutron star models for which the angular velocity of inertial frames at the center is about 70% the angular velocity of the star. These expressions are useful in the study of pulsars if pulsars are rotating neutron stars.  相似文献

The nature of the asymmetry that gives rise to Type I X-ray burst oscillations on accreting neutron stars remains a matter of debate. Of particular interest is whether the burst oscillation mechanism differs between the bursting millisecond pulsars and the non-pulsing systems. One means to diagnose this is to study the energy dependence of the burst oscillations: here we present an analysis of oscillations from 28 bursts observed during the 2003 outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814−338. We find that the fractional amplitude of the burst oscillations falls with energy, in contrast to the behaviour found by Muno et al. in the burst oscillations from a set of non-pulsing systems. The drop with energy mirrors that seen in the accretion-powered pulsations; in this respect XTE J1814−338 behaves like the other accreting millisecond pulsars. The burst oscillations show no evidence for either hard or soft lags, in contrast to the persistent pulsations, which show soft lags of up to 50 μs. The fall in amplitude with energy is inconsistent with current surface-mode and simple hotspot models of burst oscillations. We discuss improvements to the models and uncertainties in the physics that might resolve these issues.  相似文献

We present results of our pulsar population synthesis of normal and millisecond pulsars in the Galactic plane. Over the past several years, a program has been developed to simulate pulsar birth, evolution and emission using Monte Carlo techniques. We have added to the program the capability to simulate millisecond pulsars, which are old, recycled pulsars with extremely short periods. We model the spatial distribution of the simulated pulsars by assuming that they start with a random kick velocity and then evolve through the Galactic potential. We use a polar cap/slot gap model for γ-ray emission from both millisecond and normal pulsars. From our studies of radio pulsars that have clearly identifiable core and cone components, in which we fit the polarization sweep as well as the pulse profiles in order to constrain the viewing geometry, we develop a model describing the ratio of radio core-to-cone peak fluxes. In this model, short period pulsars are more cone-dominated than in our previous studies. We present the preliminary results of our recent study and the implications for observing these pulsars with GLAST and AGILE.   相似文献

We give an expression for the radiation produced by a uniformly charged particle when it traverses normally a semi-infinite boundary between two media, both of the same constant; refractive indexn, measured in the appropriate rest frames of the media. The media are taken to slip relative to each other with constant velocity parallel to the boundary. We compute the differential power output and show that (a) the emitted radiation has a flat spectrum up to a frequency such thatn can no longer be considered constant; (b) the angular dependence of the emitted radiation is peaked at an angle to the direction of motion of the particle; (c) there is a back-scattered component to the radiation. in view of the complexity of the analytic formulae for the differential power output we give some numerical examples forn>1 andn<1 to illustrate the different angular dependences of the power output in both cases.Since high energy charged particles are currently thought to be produced in the magnetospheres of pulsars, and since such particles must then escape from the environment of the pulsar by traversing the differentially shearing magnetosphere, it would seem that the simple calculations reported here illustrate a new mechanism for radiation production which is of astrophysical interest.  相似文献

Earlier work on the oscillations of an ellipsoid is extended to investigate the behaviour of a nonequilibrium compressible homogeneous rotating gaseous ellipsoid, with the components of the velocity field as linear functions of the coordinates, and with parallel angular velocity and uniform vorticity. The dynamical behaviour of the ellipsoid is obtained by numerically integrating the relevant differential equations for different values of the initial angular velocity and vorticity. This behaviour is displayed by the (a 1,a 2) and (a 1,a 3) phase plots, where thea i's (i = 1, 2, 3) are the semi-diameters, and by the graphs ofa 1,a 2,a 3, the volume, and the angular velocity as functions of time. The dynamical behaviour of the nonequilibrium ellipsoid depends on the deviation of the angular momentum from its equilibrium value; for larger deviations, the oscillations are more nonperiodic with larger amplitudes. An initially ellipsoidal configuration always remains ellipsoidal, but it cannot become spheroidal about its rotation axis, though it may become spheroidal instantaneously about either one of the other two principal axes. For an ellipsoid approaching axisymmetry about its axis of rotation, the angular velocity can suddenly increase by a large amount. Thus if an astrophysical object can be modelled by a nonequilibrium ellipsoid, it may occasionally undergo sudden large increases of angular velocity.  相似文献

Undamped quasiradial fluctuations of rotating neutron stars and the gravitation radiation generated by them are discussed. Two possible sources of energy for maintaining these fluctuations are mentioned: the energy of deformation of the decelerating neutron star (spin down) and the energy released during a jump in the star's angular velocity (glitch). Expressions are derived for the intensity of the gravitational radiation and the amplitude of a plane gravitational wave for an earthbound observer. Estimates of these quantities are obtained for the Vela and Crab pulsars, for which the secular variation in the angular velocity is most often accompanied by irregular variations. It is shown that gravitational waves from these pulsars could be detected by the new generation of detectors.  相似文献

The gravitational rotation of slowly rotating neutron stars with rough surfaces is examined. The source of the gravitational waves is assumed to be the energy transferred to the crust of the star during irregular changes in its angular rotation velocity. It is shown that individual pulsars whose angular velocity regularly undergoes glitches will radiate a periodic gravitational signal that can be distinguished from noise by the latest generation of detectors. Simultaneous recording of a gravitational signal and of a glitch in the angular velocity of a pulsar will ensure reliable detection of gravitational radiation. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 221–229 (May 2006).  相似文献

We report on the numerical discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) associated with accretion through a non-axisymmetric magnetic boundary layer in the unstable regime, when two ordered equatorial streams form and rotate synchronously at approximately the angular velocity of the inner disc. The streams hit the star's surface producing hotspots. Rotation of the spots leads to high-frequency QPOs. We performed a number of simulation runs for different magnetospheric sizes from small to tiny, and observed a definite correlation between the inner disc radius and the QPO frequency: the frequency is higher when the magnetosphere is smaller. In the stable regime, a small magnetosphere forms and accretion through the usual funnel streams is observed, and the frequency of the star is expected to dominate the light curve. We performed exploratory investigations of the case in which the magnetosphere becomes negligibly small and the disc interacts with the star through an equatorial belt. We also performed investigation of somewhat larger magnetospheres where one or two ordered tongues may dominate over other chaotic tongues. In application to millisecond pulsars, we obtain QPO frequencies in the range of 350–990 Hz for one spot. The frequency associated with rotation of one spot may dominate if spots are not identical or antipodal. If the spots are similar and antipodal, then the frequencies are twice as high. We show that variation of the accretion rate leads to drift of the QPO peak.  相似文献

The time and spatial characteristics of 324 large sunspots (S50 millionths of the solar hemisphere) selected from the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory photoheliogram collection (1950–1990) have been studied. The variations of sunspot angular rotation velocity residuals and oscillations of sunspot tilt angle were analyzed. It has been shown that the differential rotation rate of selected sunspots correlates on average with the solar cycle. The deceleration of differential rotation of large sunspots begins on the ascending arm of the activity curve and ends on the descending arm reaching minimum near the epochs of solar activity maxima. This behavior disappears during the 21st cycle. The amplitudes and periods of sunspot tilt-angle oscillations correlate well with the solar activity cycle. Near the epochs of activity maximum there appear sunspots with large amplitudes and periods showing a significant scatter while the scatter near the minimum is rather low. We also found evidence of phase difference between the sunspot angular rotation velocity and the amplitudes and periods of tilt-angle oscillations.  相似文献

We explore a simple model for the representation of the observed distributions of the motions, and the characteristic ages of the local population of pulsars. The principal difference from earlier models is the introduction of a unique value,S, for the kick velocity with which pulsars are born. We consider separately the proper motion components in galactic longitude and latitude, and find that the distributions of the velocity components parallel and perpendicular to the galactic plane are represented satisfactorily byS = 200 km/sec, and leave no room for a significant fraction of much higher velocities. The successful proposition of a unique value for the kick velocity may provide an interesting tool in attempts to understand the physical process leading to the expulsion of the neutron star. This paper is an extended analysis of the talk presented by A. Blaauw at the Raman Research Institute on 20th February, 1996.  相似文献

We show that the strong correlation observed between the braking indices (n) and the slowing-down ages (Τ) of pulsars is inconsistent with counteralignment between their rotation and magnetic axes, but that the data on pulsars with positive braking indices is consistent with alignment. Alternatively, slowing-down noise can quantitatively account for the data on all pulsars except the Crab and the Vela, and so for the apparent|n| ∼ Τ2 correlation observed for the older pulsars.  相似文献

Using reasonable assumptions, we derive the distribution function of pulsar space velocities from the distribution of pulsar heights above the Galactic plane. We find that for 137 pulsars of the north Galactic hemisphere, the space velocity distribution is discrete, and forms two separate groups. We estimate the velocity ranges and the mean pulsar velocity of each group.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 2, pp. 245–254, April–June, 1994.  相似文献

Shemar & Lyne have previously presented observations and an analysis of 32 glitches and their subsequent relaxations observed in a total of 15 pulsars. These data are brought together in this paper with those published by other authors. We show quantitatively how glitch activity decreases linearly with decreasing rate of slow-down. As indicated previously from studies of the Vela pulsar, the analysis suggests that 1.7 per cent of the moment of inertia of a typical neutron star is normally contained in pinned superfluid which releases its excess angular momentum at the time of a glitch. There is a broad range of glitch amplitude and there is a strong indication that pulsars with large magnetic fields suffer many small glitches while others show a smaller number of large glitches. Transient effects following glitches are very marked in young pulsars and decrease linearly with decreasing rate of slow-down, suggesting that the amount of loosely pinned superfluid decreases with age. We suggest that the low braking index of the Vela and Crab pulsars cannot be caused by a decreasing moment of inertia and should be attributed to step increases in the effective magnetic moment of the neutron star at the glitches.  相似文献

Equations for the dynamics of a rotating two-component neutron star are derived in the framework of the general theory of relativity. The density of neutron vortex filaments is expressed in terms of the angular momentum density of the superfluid neutrons in the “npe” phase of the neutron star. It is shown that a theory of the relaxation of the angular velocity of pulsars must include corrections associated with the deviation of g00 from unity, which is a consequence of the curvature of space.  相似文献

We consider the kinetics of a rarefied rotating planetary atmosphere. The spatial distributions of the atmospheric-gas density and mean angular velocity were determined by analyzing the exact solution of the two-dimensional kinetic equation. We show that the angular velocity of the gas at some distance from the planet could be higher than that in the initial layer starting from which the atmosphere is rarefied. Our model calculations elucidate the superrotation mechanism under consideration.  相似文献

I show in this paper that two types of magnetic torques can appear in the interaction between an accretion disc and a magnetic accretor. There is the well-known torque resulting from the difference in angular velocity between the accretion disc and the star, but in addition there is a torque coming from the interaction between the stellar magnetic field and the disc's own magnetic field. The latter form of magnetic torque decreases in strength more slowly with increasing radius, and will therefore dominate at large radii. The direction of the disc field is not determined by the difference in angular velocity between the star and the disc as in the Ghosh &38; Lamb model, but rather is a free parameter. The magnetic torque may therefore either spin up or spin down the star, and the torque changes sign if the magnetic field in the disc reverses. I suggest that this mechanism can explain the torque reversals that have been observed in some disc-fed X-ray pulsars.  相似文献

We study possible impact of a softening of the equation of state by a phase transition, or appearance of hyperons, on the spin evolution of isolated pulsars. Numerical simulations are performed using exact 2-D simulations in general relativity. The equation of state of dense matter at supranuclear densities is poorly known. Therefore, the accent is put on the general correlations between evolution and equation of state, and mathematical strictness. General conjectures referring to the structure of the one-parameter families of stationary configurations are formulated. The interplay of the back bending phenomenon and stability with respect to axisymmetric perturbations is described. Changes of pulsar parameters in a corequake following instability are discussed, for a broad choice of phase transitions predicted by different theories of dense matter. The energy release in a corequake, at a given initial pressure, is shown to be independent of the angular momentum of collapsing configuration. This result holds for various types of phases transition, with and without metastability. We critically review observations of pulsars that could be relevant for the detection of the signatures of the phase transition in neutron star cores. We have used the “age selection methodology” (ASM) (Zappalá and Zuccarello 1991) to study the variability of the sunspot groups angular velocity during the activity cycle. The ASM allows us to separate the contribution of Young Sunspot Groups (YSG) from that of Recurrent ones (RSG) in the Ω(θ) determination and therefore to evaluate whether the increase in angular velocity during minima (reported in literature using all sunspot groups as tracers), is due to a greater statistical weight of YSG on RSG or whether it reflects a global characteristic of the Sun. The results obtained from the analysis of sunspot groups data collected during the period 1874‐1981 (Greenwich Photoheliographic Results) indicate that during minima, besides the fact that the percentage of RSG drops to ≤ 5%, both YSG and RSG show the same increase in angular velocity, i.e. 0.16 degrees/day. Comparing our results with those reported in literature and taking into account the internal angular velocity as deduced by p‐mode oscillations, it is possible to conclude that the observed higher angular velocity of the Sun during minima concerns several layers of the Sun.  相似文献

We report on results from photographic observations of photospheric oscillations as a function of depth. Using rms-values and power-spectra from shifts of entire line-profiles, we find qualitatively an increase of the velocity-amplitude with increasing height. We get more quantitative informations by comparing measured asymmetries of line-profiles with calculated ones derived from Voigt-functions containing a depth dependent velocity-field.We find the scale-height H 0 of photospheric velocity oscillations to be 930±100 km. This result is to be compared with H 0 = 1100±200 km obtained by Canfield (1976), who used velocity weighting functions of the line centres.Further, we show that a general observed line asymmetry of medium strong lines (c-shape) does not depend on the phase of oscillations.Mitt. aus dem Kiepenheuer-Institut Nr. 178.  相似文献
