A lunar occultation (LO) technique in the near-infrared (NIR) provides angular resolution down to milliarcseconds for an occulted source, even with ground- based 1 m class telescopes. LO observations are limited to brighter objects because they require a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ~40) for proper extraction of angular diameter values. Hence, methods to improve the S/N ratio by reducing noise using Fourier and wavelet transforms have been explored in this study. A sample of 54 NIR LO light curves observed with the IR camera at Mt Abu Observatory has been used. It is seen that both Fourier and wavelet methods have shown an improvement in S/N compared to the original data. However, the application of wavelet transforms causes a slight smoothing of the fringes and results in a higher value for angular diameter. Fourier transforms which reduce discrete noise frequencies do not distort the fringe. The Fourier transform method seems to be effective in improving the S/N, as well as improving the model fit, particularly in the fainter regime of our sample. These methods also provide a better model fit for brighter sources in some cases, though there may not be a significant imorovement in S/N.  相似文献

A program of lunar infrared radiometry which uses large area scanning is described. Procedures for atmospheric attenuation correction and data reduction to temperature by relative radiometry are outlined. The scan data of the waning Moon taken during ten evenings in the 10- to 12-µm window are presented as isothermal contour maps of the lunar disc. More than 160 areas of anomalous thermal emission have been found in the lunar darkside data. These are tabulated and are also shown on an accompanying map. An error analysis, derived from accuracy estimates of the independent parameters, is included.  相似文献

The near-IR spectral properties of minerals, meteorites, and lunar soil vary with temperature. The manner in which these materials vary is diagnostic of aspects of their composition. We quantify the spectral dependence on temperature by reporting the change in relative reflectance with temperature as a function of wavelength. We call this quantity, ΔRT (in units of K−1), as a function of temperature the “thermo-reflectance spectrum.” The thermo-reflectance spectra of olivine and pyroxene are distinct, and most of the observable structure in thermo-reflectance spectra of the ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites can be understood in terms of a mixture of the thermo-reflectance spectra of olivine and pyroxene. The magnitude of thermo-reflectance spectra of meteorites and lunar soils is much less than that of pure minerals. Lunar soils are particularly subdued. While conventional analysis of remotely obtained spectra of the Moon can neglect temperature effects, spatially resolved measurements of the surface of the asteroid Vesta will likely have a strong temperature-dependent component based on measurements of a eucrite and a howardite.  相似文献

The thermal emission of the lunar surface has been mapped by an infrared scanner from lunar orbit. Samples from approximately 2.5 × 105 scans reveal the full range of lunar temperatures from 80 K to 400 K. The temperature resolution was 1 K with about ± 2 K absolute precision. Spatial resolution was approximately 2 km over most of the horizon-to-horizon scan. The total mapped area amounted to approximately 30% of the lunar surface. The data currently available confirms the large population of nighttime thermal anomalies in western Oceanus Procellarum predicted by Earthbased observations. Most of these ‘hot spots’ are associated with fresh impact features or boulder fields. Also seen in the data are ‘cold spots’ where  相似文献

Remote infrared spectroscopic measurements have recently re-opened the possibility that water is present on the surface of the Moon. Analyses of infrared absorption spectra obtained by three independent space instruments have identified water and hydroxyl (-OH) absorption bands at ∼3 μm within the lunar surface. These reports are surprising since there are many mechanisms that can remove water but no clear mechanism for replenishment. One hypothesis, based on the spatial distribution of the -OH signal, is that water is formed by the interaction of the solar wind with silicates and other oxides in the lunar basalt. To test this hypothesis, we have performed a series of laboratory simulations that examine the effect of proton irradiation on two minerals: anorthite and ilmenite. Bi-directional infrared reflection absorption spectra do not show any discernable enhancement of infrared absorption in the 3 μm spectral region following 1 or 100 keV proton irradiation at fluences between 1016 and 1018 ions cm−2. In fact, the post-irradiation spectra are characterized by a decrease in the residual O-H band within both minerals. Similarly, secondary ion mass spectrometry shows a decrease rather than an increase of the water group ions following proton bombardment of ilmenite. The absence of significant formation of either -OH or H2O is ascribed to the preferential depletion of oxygen by sputtering during proton irradiation, which is confirmed by post-irradiation surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Our results provide no evidence to support the formation of H2O in the lunar regolith via implantation of solar wind protons as a mechanism responsible for the significant O-H absorption in recent spacecraft data. We determine an upper limit for the production of surficial -OH on the lunar surface by solar wind irradiation to be 0.5% (absorption depth).  相似文献

A photoelectric observation in the near infrared of the 10 February 1977 lunar occultation of Uranus is described and analyzed in terms of planetary radius, limb darkening, and polar brightening. Contact timings, corrected for lunar limb effects, indicate an equatorial radius of 25,700 ± 500km for the visible disk. A modified Minnaert function is used to model limb darkening and polar brightening. Least-squares fits to the observed light curve indicate that Uranus is slightly limb darkened in the passband of the observation (450 ÅA FWHM centered near 6900 ÅA) and that polar brightening is present.  相似文献

Observations have been made of the unlit limb of the Moon at infrared wavelengths, and detailed apparent temperature charts for the entire limb are presented. A number of thermal anomalies lying close to the limb have been discovered. Evidence is presented that there are sufficient large boulders near the lunar limb to invalidate temperatures determined at a single infrared wavelength during the night or at eclipse. The possibility that thermal anomalies are produced by local variations in the area density of boulders is discussed.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging techniques, combined with electron microprobe analyses, have been used to determine the physical state of feldspathic phases that have been subject to varying levels of shock in the grouped lunar meteorites Miller Range 090034, 090070, and 090075. Six feldspathic phases have been identified based on spectral, textural, and chemical properties. A specific infrared wavelength band ratio (1064/932 cm?1 equivalent to 9.40/10.73 μm), chosen because it can distinguish between some of the feldspathic phases, can be used to estimate the pressure regimes experienced by these phases. In addition, FTIR spatial mapping capabilities allow for visual comparison of variably shocked phases within the samples. By comparing spectral and compositional data, the origin and shock history of this lunar meteorite group has been determined, with each of the shocked feldspathic phases being related to events in its geological evolution. As such, we highlight that FTIR spectroscopy can be easily employed to identify shocked feldspathic phases in lunar samples; estimate peak shock pressures; and when compared with chemical data, can be used to investigate their shock histories.  相似文献

A theory of the directional characteristics of the lunar infrared radiation measured by Saari and Shorthill has been derived. This theory is in excellent agreement with experiment at all angles of observation and at all phase angles. The radiation law used to describe the angular dependence of the infrared radiation emitted by a flat element of the lunar surface is 0.85 cos + 0.22 cos2, where is the angle between the surface normal and the direction of observation. This radiation law is subsequently modified by taking into account lunar surface roughness. We assume a surface covered in part with spherical craters of various depth to diameter ratios as a model for the lunar soil. Re-radiation within the craters has been accounted for. Extensive use is made of group theoretical and invariant tensor methods which enable us to show that most of the details of the radiation pattern do not depend on the detailed nature of the surface features assumed, but only on the average surface slope. A best fit to the Saari-Shorthill data has been obtained by assuming 50% of the lunar surface to be covered with craters with a depth to diameter ratio of 1:3, while the remainder of the surface is essentially flat. Abstract— Concentrations of adsorbed water in single mineral grains of Antarctic lunar meteorites were determined with micro infrared (IR) spectroscopy. A relationship was found between the mineral's ability to adsorb water and the extent of Ce anomaly in rare earth element (REE) patterns precisely determined by the isotope dilution method using a thermal ionization mass spectrometer. Asuka (A) 881757, a lunar meteorite from the mare basalt without Ce anomaly, showed no trace of IR absorption due to adsorbed water. On the contrary, Yamato (Y) 791197-109, Y-86032-98, Y-86032-95, Y-791197-115 and Y-82192-55A from the lunar highland exhibiting positive Ce anomaly showed IR absorption due to adsorbed water in some of their minerals. The detected water would be of terrestrial origin, because it was not structurally bound and easy to exchange judging from the spectral band shape. The contrast in concentration of adsorbed water between the lunar highland and the mare basalt is derived from a difference in the density of microfractures in mineral grains. Average concentrations of adsorbed water in the lunar highland meteorites were 3.8 mg/cm3 for pyroxene and olivine, and 1.7 mg/cm3 for plagioclase. This contrast between minerals is noteworthy because it has been known that Ce anomaly of pyroxene and olivine is larger than that of plagioclase both for Antarctic lunar meteorites and some lunar rocks. Furthermore, more adsorbed water was detected for minerals in meteorites that exhibit larger Ce anomaly. The present observations demonstrate that the extent of Ce anomaly correlated with the concentration of adsorbed water, which suggests that active mineral surface resulting in adsorption of water could be a trace of interaction forming Ce anomaly. Terrestrial weathering on Antarctica and REE fractionation on the Moon are discussed for possible origins of the Ce anomaly.  相似文献

Calculations of the grain equilibrium temperature and of the expected infrared spectra of IC 418, BD+30° 3639, NGC 6572 and NGC 7027 have been performed using dielectric constants of lunar silicates. The results have been compared with previous work on pure graphite and ice-mantle grains. Lα heating of dust followed by thermal re-emission is consistent with the large infrared excesses detected in planetary nebulae. An extra source of heating is, nevertheless, necessary to fit correctly the experimental results. It appears from the calculations that, for each object, it is possible to define theoretically the most probable nature of the emitting dust.  相似文献

The observed infrared excess in Be stars is usually interpreted as free-free and free-bound emission from a hot gas envelope around the Be star. This hot gas should also emit H-alpha line radiation. Earlier observations had suggested that the infrared excess and Hα radiation were not consistent with models in which they arise from the same ionized region; however the observations were made at different times. We have made simultaneous observation of infrared and H-alpha line radiation. Our observations imply that either both these radiations cannot arise from the same hot gas or additional processes have to be invoked to account for the observed excess infrared radiation.  相似文献

Between 1000 and 2000 infrared (eclipse) and radar anomalies have been mapped on the nearside hemisphere of the Moon. A study of 52 of these anomalies indicates that most are related to impact craters and that the nature of the infrared and radar responses is compatible with a previously developed geologic model of crater aging processes. The youngest craters are pronounced thermal and radar anomalies; that is, they have enhanced eclipse temperatures and are strong radar scatterers. With increasing crater age, the associated thermal and radar responses become progressively less noticeable until they assume values for the average lunar surface. The last type of anomaly to disappear is radar enhancement at longer wavelengths. A few craters, however, have infrared and radar behaviors not predicted by the aging model. One previously unknown feature - a field strewn with centimeter-sized rock fragments - has been identified by this technique of comparing maps at the infrared, radar, and visual wavelengths.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for removal of the thermal component from planetary reflectance measurements and discusses the limitations involved. In less than a decade, infrared array detectors have revolutionized infrared astronomy. Most of us remember using single element photometers in the early eighties, yet today, most of us are using 256×256 pixel arrays. At this meeting we have heard of plans to fabricate 1024×1024 arrays in the near infrared. From one to one million pixels in such a short period of time is amazing. The new array technology has also stimulated the development of many varieties of infrared cameras and spectrometers. At the UCLA Infrared Imaging Detector Lab we have commissioned two near infrared imaging systems (KCam and Gemini) based on 256×256 arrays and a spectrometer design study is in progress for 1024×1024 arrays. Performance of these cameras on the telescope will be reported briefly.  相似文献

Deep infrared and optical images are presented of three proposed remnants of Thorne–Z.ytkow objects (TZ.Os). In particular, the infrared data go several infrared magnitudes deeper than previous observations, and in at least one case reveal the existence of weak objects within the error circles. It is argued, however, that none of the objects is likely to be the binary companion to the X-ray source in that region. These data present severe limits on any possible star or residual envelope at the distances of the respective X-ray objects.  相似文献

We present high resolution infrared images of the pre-main sequence star V536 Aql and polarization maps of the reflection nebula IRN Cha observed with the SHARP camera on the ESO NTT. Extended structures are observed near V536 Aql. The polarization pattern of IRN Cha is typical of a centrally illuminated source but with a central band of anomalously oriented polarization believed to occur in an optically thick disk.  相似文献

This paper presents an infrared study of thermal anomalies during the lunar night. From observations of the most intense anomalies at several wavelengths it is deduced that fields of boulders are responsible for the thermal enhancement; the cooling curves of the remainder are consistent with such a model. High resolution Lunar Orbiter photographs of some of the thermal anomalies reveal boulders to be present within them in just the right numbers. The ages and distribution of thermal anomalies are discussed in the light of this model.  相似文献
