GD 552 is a high proper motion star with the strong, double-peaked emission lines characteristic of the dwarf nova class of cataclysmic variable (CV) star, and yet no outburst has been detected during the past 12 yr of monitoring. We present spectroscopy taken with the aim of detecting emission from the mass donor in this system. We fail to do so at a level which allows us to rule out the presence of a near-main-sequence star donor. Given GD 552's orbital period of 103 min, this suggests that it is either a system that has evolved through the ∼80-minute orbital period minimum of CV stars and now has a brown dwarf mass donor, or that has formed with a brown dwarf donor in the first place. This model explains the low observed orbital velocity of the white dwarf and GD 552's low luminosity. It is also consistent with the absence of outbursts from the system.  相似文献

We present simultaneous X-ray ( RXTE ) and optical (ULTRACAM) narrow-band (Bowen blend/He  ii and nearby continuum) observations of Sco X-1 at 2–10 Hz time resolution. We find that the Bowen/He  ii emission lags the X-ray light curves with a light traveltime of     s which is consistent with reprocessing in the companion star. The echo from the donor is detected at orbital phase ∼0.5 when Sco X-1 is at the top of the flaring branch (FB). Evidence of echoes is also seen at the bottom of the FB but with time-lags of 5–10 s which are consistent with reprocessing in an accretion disc with a radial temperature profile. We discuss the implication of our results for the orbital parameters of Sco X-1.  相似文献

We present high-time-resolution multicolour observations of the quiescent soft X-ray transient V404 Cyg obtained with ULTRACAM. Superimposed on the ellipsoidal modulation of the secondary star are large flares on time-scales of a few hours, as well as several distinct rapid flares on time-scales of tens of minutes. The rapid flares, most of which show further variability and unresolved peaks, cover shorter time-scales than those reported in previous observations. The power density spectrum of the 5-s time-resolution data shows a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature at 0.78 mHz (=21.5 min). Assuming this periodicity represents the Keplerian period at the transition between the thin and advective disc regions, we determine the transition radius. We discuss the possible origins for the QPO feature in the context of the advection-dominated accretion flow model.
We determine the colour of the large flares and find that the i '-band flux per unit frequency interval is larger than that in the g ' band. The colour is consistent with optically thin gas with a temperature of ∼8000 K arising from a region with an equivalent blackbody radius of at least  2 R  , which covers 3 per cent of the surface of the accretion disc. Our timing and spectral analysis results support the idea that the rapid flares (i.e. the QPO feature) most likely arise from regions near the transition radius.  相似文献

We present a multiwavelength study of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg in quiescence, focusing upon the spectral energy distribution (SED). Radio, optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray coverage is simultaneous. We supplement the SED with additional non-simultaneous data in the optical through infrared where necessary. The compiled SED is the most complete available for this, the X-ray and radio brightest quiescent black hole system. We find no need for a substantial contribution from accretion light from the near-UV to the near-IR, and in particular the weak UV emission constrains published spectral models for V404 Cyg. We confirm that no plausible companion spectrum and interstellar extinction can fully explain the mid-IR, however, and an infrared (IR) excess from a jet or cool disc appears to be required. The X-ray spectrum is consistent with a  Γ∼ 2  power law as found by all other studies to date. There is no evidence for any variation in the hardness over a range of a factor of 10 in luminosity. The radio flux is consistent with a flat spectrum (in   f ν  ). The break frequency between a flat and optically thin spectrum most likely occurs in the mid or far-IR, but is not strongly constrained by these data. We find the radio to be substantially variable but with no clear correlation with X-ray variability.  相似文献

We argue that the quiescent value of the viscosity parameter of the accretion disc in WZ Sge may be  αcold∼ 0.01  , in agreement with estimates of αcold for other dwarf novae. Assuming the white dwarf in WZ Sge to be magnetic, we show that, in quiescence, material close to the white dwarf can be propelled to larger radii, depleting the inner accretion disc. The propeller therefore has the effect of stabilizing the inner disc and allowing the outer disc to accumulate mass. The outbursts of WZ Sge are then regulated by the (magnetically determined) evolution of the surface density of the outer disc at a radius close to the tidal limit. Numerical models confirm that the recurrence time can be significantly extended in this way. The outbursts are expected to be superoutbursts since the outer disc radius is forced to exceed the tidal (3:1 resonance) radius. The large, quiescent disc is expected to be massive, and to be able to supply the observed mass accretion rate during outburst. We predict that the long-term spin evolution of the white dwarf spin will involve a long cycle of spin-up and spin-down phases.  相似文献

We present a spectrophotometric study of short-term optical variability in the quiescent black hole X-ray transient V404 Cyg. This includes two nights of high-time-resolution H α spectroscopy with which we resolve much of the time variability, and a further six nights of archival spectroscopy with lower time resolution but higher spectral resolution. We find significant variability in most of the data considered, with both the H α line and the continuum often varying in a correlated way. This includes both dramatic flares lasting a few hours in which the line flux nearly doubles and lower-level flickering. The strongest flares involve development of asymmetry in the line profile, with the red wing usually strongest independent of orbital phase. It is unclear why this is the case, but we discuss several possible explanations. We consider the energetics of the flares and compare with plausible models including chromospheric activity on the companion star, local magnetic reconnection events within the disc and varying irradiation from close to the black hole. Based on the line profile changes during the flares, we conclude that the most likely origin for the variability is variable photoionization by the central source, although local flares within the disc cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

We study the soft X-ray variability of Cygnus X-3. By combining data from the All-Sky Monitor and Proportional Counter Array instruments on the RXTE satellite with EXOSAT /Medium Energy (ME) detector observations, we are able to analyse the power density spectrum (PDS) of the source from 10−9 to 0.1 Hz, thus covering time-scales from seconds to years. As the data on the longer time-scales are unevenly sampled, we combine traditional power spectral techniques with simulations to analyse the variability in this range. The PDS at higher frequencies  (≳10−3 Hz)  are for the first time compared for all states of this source. We find that it is for all states well described by a power law, with index  ∼−2  in the soft states and a tendency for a less steep power law in the hard state. At longer time-scales, we study the effect of the state transitions on the PDS, and find that the variability below  ∼10−7 Hz  is dominated by the transitions. Furthermore, we find no correlation between the length of a high/soft-state episode and the time since the previous high/soft state. On intermediate time-scales, we find evidence for a break in the PDS at time-scales of the order of the orbital period. This may be interpreted as evidence for the existence of a tidal resonance in the accretion disc around the compact object, and constraining the mass ratio to   M 2/ M 1≲ 0.3  .  相似文献

We present epoch 1996, high-quality radial velocity data for HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of Cygnus X-1. Combining our results with all published historical data, we have derived a new ephemeris for the system of HJD 245 0235.29 + n  × 5.5998, which allows accurate orbital phase calculations to be made for any X-ray observations over the last 30 years. We find no evidence for any period change such as that suggested by Ninkov, Walker &38; Yang. We discuss the shortcomings of previous work in establishing the period and orbital elements.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that β Lyrae is a massive mass-transfer system in which the more massive gainer is embedded in a thick accretion disc. No detailed, quantitative accretion disc model of the system, which fits both the available photometric and spectroscopic data, has been published.
This paper considers a thick accretion disc model. An empirical two-temperature model for the accretion disc rim produces an accurate fit to the UBV and OAO2 photometry. The two-temperature rim model leads to synthetic spectra with a much larger Balmer jump than is present in spectrophotometric scans. The same model fails to produce IR light curves with the 0.5p eclipse deeper than the 0.0p eclipse, as shown in the observations of Jameson & Longmore.
The paper next reports initial results for a model in which an extra source of continuum radiation arises from Thomson scattering of radiation from the gainer, which is hidden from the observer by the thick accretion disc.
The adopted rate of mass transfer cannot supply the energy radiated by the accretion disc rim, nor can any credible larger rate. The most likely energy source is the mass gainer.  相似文献

The UBV light curves of the early-type eclipsing binary V448 Cygni, obtained at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory from 1964 to 1967, are re-analysed here. The analysis was made assuming the presence of an accretion disc in the system, as inferred from the light-curve shape and spectroscopic characteristics of the system. The Roche model of a binary was used, containing a geometrically and optically thick accretion disc around the hotter and more massive star. By solving the inverse problem, the orbital elements and the physical parameters of the system components and of the accretion disc were estimated. This result is important for understanding the star formation and evolution processes in the systems with massive components.  相似文献
