Summary The global distribution of the lunar barometric tideL 2 is investigated by spherical harmonic analysis, based on 104 stations for the annual mean, and on 85 stations for the three seasons. The main wave ofL 2 is the one with wave number 2, but for a detailed study of the irregularities of the global distribution ofL 2, waves with other wave numbers have also to be considered. Even the main wave ofL 2 is asymmetric to the equator with the two lunar-daily pressure maxima occurring earlier in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere. The amplitudes at the same distances from the equator are greater in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere. These hemispheric differences are most pronounced during the D season. As found in earlier investigations the phase consiant ofL 2 is always greater during the J season than during the D season. But the amplitudes are greatest during the J season only north of 30oS. Summary Origin ofP waves detected earlier in microseisms of very quiet locations in the USSR is discussed in detail. It appears that the most pronounced sources ofP waves are tropical cyclones over the Pacific. The amplitude of the force in the source for a medium power typhoon is found to be of the order of 1016 dynes. The effective source area is estimated as 104–105 km2 approximately. The shape of the amplitude spectrum ofP wave corrected for the absorption in the mantle does not contradict with the standing wave theory of microseisms generation. Results of observations at various epicentral distances give strong evidences of the predominant attenuation of the fundamental Rayleigh mode as compared with higher Rayleigh modes andP waves in the frequency band of 0.3–0.15 cps.  相似文献

Events from the December 1982 Huairou County, Beijing, and the July 1982 Jianchuan, Yunnan earthquake series were recorded at one station in Beijing City and at four stations in Eryuan area, Yunnan, respectively. Dividing the spectra (for P and S waves) from the smaller events in the series by spectra (for corresponding P and S waves) from the larger events in cach region, we have determined the high frequency source spectral decay rate to be ω−1in both cases. Through trial and error method, we are able to determine the appropriate constantQ P andQ S that corrects the individual spectra to the proper high frequency decay rate. It is found that aQ P of 800 and aQ S of 550 can adequately compensate for the attenuation of the waves in Beijing area. For Jianchuan, Yunnan area the corresponding values are 900 and 400. A series of Hokkaido events, recorded by the FBV Broadband Seismograph System at the KHC Seismic Station, is used to study the structure of the earthquake magnitude scale on the basis of maximum velocity amplitudesA vmax of teleseismicPwaves in different period bands. Amplitude-periodband (APB) diagrams are constructed for each event. According to the shape of the APB diagrams the events investigated can be divided into three types: (a) events with largestA vmax values in the intermediate period range (periods ofA vmax from 2.2 to 23 sec), (b) events with largestA vmax values in the short-period range (periods ofA vmax from 1 to 2 sec), (c) events exhibiting anomalous APB diagrams. Type (a) events seem to represent the process of wave generation that prevails for shallow earthquakes. Type (b) events approach to explosive-like generation of seismic waves. The nature of the exceptionally occurring type (c) events must be clarified in further investigations. The influence of the type of earthquake on the magnitude values estimated on the basis of standard class A and B (short-period and intermediate-band) seismograms is demonstrated. It appears that for estimating correct values of earthquake magnitudes complementary information on the process of seismic wave generation in the focus is necessary. At teleseismic distances this information can be obtained from either APB diagrams or amplitude spectra ofP waves recorded, e.g., by broadband velocity sensing instruments.  相似文献

Summary The effective propagation ofLi, Lg andRg waves across Aegean sea was established. It shows that the basin has the continental structure and that the orogenic area of Aegean sea doesn't influence on the continental waves transmition. Summary Coda waves viz. the tail portion of an earthquake record have been observed and analysed byCarder, Macelwane and others. They showed that the periods of such waves increase with the increase of epicentral distances.Carder observed that these waves have very little transverse component so that these may be considered as of the type of Rayleigh waves. RecentlyOmote showed that the Coda waves contain three periodsT 1,T 2,T 3 of whichT 1 increases with epi-central distances as observed by previous observers. ButT 2,T 3 remain constant for all earthquakes from different epicentral distances.Omote tried to explain this phenomenon by considering that the surface of the earth consists of several layers andT 2,T 3 are free oscillation periods of the surface layers.T 1 period has been explained bySezawa and also byJeffreys which has been shown byGutenberg. The author has attempted to explain the periodsT 2,T 3 by considering passage of cracks at the focal region. We describe a fully automated seismic event detection and location system, providing for real-time estimates of the epicentral parameters of both local and distant earthquakes. The system uses 12 telemetered short-period stations, with a regional aperture of 350 km, as well as two 3-component broad-band stations. Detection and location of teleseismic events is achieved independently and concurrently on the short-period and long-period channels. The long-period data is then used to obtain an estimate of the seismic momentM 0 of the earthquake through the mantle magnitudeM m, as introduced byOkal andTalandier (1989). In turn, this estimate ofM 0 is used to infer the expected tsunami amplitude at Papeete, within 15 minutes of the recording of Rayleigh waves. The performance of the method is discussed in terms of the accuracy of the epicentral parameters and seismic moment obtained in real time, as compared to the values later published by the reporting agencies. Our estimates are usually within 3 degrees of the reported epicenter, and the standard deviation on the seismic moment only 0.19 unit of magnitude for a population of 154 teleseismic events.  相似文献

In this paper, the "spectral amplitude ratio method" (SAR), "energy method" (EN) and "coda wave method" (CW) are used to calculate theQ value variations of gneiss in the preparing rupture process. The obtained results show that the variation state ofQ values by SAR features the shape of relative stability—gradual increment to the maximum—then decrement and final rupture. The variation state ofQ values by EN is just contrary to that by SAR, i. e. with the shape of stability—decrement—increment—and final rupture. The varation state ofQ values by CW is similar to that by EN, its main frequency features the shape of relatively high value—decrement to the minimum—increment—and final rupture. But to the high frequency (higher than the main frequency), the variation state ofQ values features the shape of the stable value-increment to the maximum-decrement-and final rupture. At the same time, the results by coda wave amplitude spectrum show that, when stress reaches 70% of rupture stress, the high frequency component of S wave rapidly reduces (Q c increasing); at the time of impending the main rupture, the main frequency component reduces with a large scale (Q c increasing again), this may be the reason which causes the different variation states of two codaQ values. The result of amplitude spectra of P, S (initial wave) waves also show that with the appearance of microcracks the frequency band of S wave turn to be narrow, the high frequency component is reduced quickly, i. e. the S wave spectra have different variation states with different frequency components. That is why theQ s obtained by different methods have different variation characteristics.  相似文献

Summary The global distributions of the annual and seasonal means of the diurnal (S 1) and semidiurnal (S 2) surface pressure oscillations are investigated by spherical harmonic analysis. The main waves are,S 1 1 (with wave number 1) forS 1 andS 2 2 forS 2.S 1 1 is much less predominant among the waves ofS 1 thanS 2 2 among those ofS 2. As in the case of the lunar semidiurnal barometric tideL 2 the pressure maxima occur earlier in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere. In the case ofS 2 the standing waveS 2 0 and the waveS 2 3 are also of interest besidesS 2 2. Although the present analysis extends only from 60°N to 60°S, whileS 2 0 is largest at polar latitudes, its results show thatS 2 0 should be smaller at high southerly than at high northerly latitudes, as has been observed. Thus this observed asymmetrical distribution ofS 2 0 may be due to causes outside the polar regions rather than to their geographical differences. The best approximation to the observed distribution ofS 2 0 is obtained by including a mode representing an oscillation independent of longitude and latitude indicating a small semidiurnal variation of the mean global surface presure, which is an unlikely result on physical grounds.The seasonal variation ofS 1 1 expressed in percent of the annual mean is smaller than that ofS 2 2, and both are less than the unexplained seasonal variation ofL 2 2.The main wavesS 1 1 andS 2 2 are expressed not only by associated Legendre functions, but also by Hough functions.National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A., sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Summary Solar and lunar geomagnetic tides inH at Alibag have been determined by spectral analysis of discrete Fourier transforms following the method of Black and the well-known Chapman-Miller method. The seasonal variation inL 2(H) is opposite to that inL 2(D) with maximum in thed season and minimum in thej season. In bothH andD the enhancement due to sunspot activity is larger in lunar tide than in solar tide. Surprisingly, the enhancement due to magnetic activity is greater inL 2(H) than inS 1(H), while the contrary is true for declination. It is inferred that there is a local time component of the storm time variation contrary to the view expressed by Green and Malin. The enhancements in amplitudesL 2 andS 1 inH andD, due to sunspot activity and due to magnetic activity, have been separated. The results show that the amplitude at zero sunspot number increases with magnetic activity in all the four parameters, while the enhancement due to sunspot activity at different levels of magnetic activity decreases with increase ofK p. But if bothK p andR are increasing, whenK p increases enhancement due toR decreases and whenR increases enhancement due toK p decreases.  相似文献

The values of seismic moment andS-wave corner frequency from 1575 seismic events induced in South African, Canadian, Polish, and German underground mines were collected to study their scaling relations. The values ofP-wave corner frequency from 649 events were also available. Seismic moments of these events range from 5*103 to 2*1015 N·m (moment magnitude is from –3.6 to 4.1), theS-wave corner frequency ranges from 0.7 to 4438 Hz, and theP-wave corner frequency is between 5 and 4010 Hz. The slope of a regression line between the logarithm ofS- andP-wave corner frequencies is equal to one, and the corner frequencies ofP waves are higher than those ofS waves on the average by about 25 percent. In studies of large and moderate earthquakes it has been found that stress drop is approximately independent of the seismic moment, which means that seismic moment is inversely proportional to the third power of corner frequency. Such a behavior was confirmed for most of the data considered here. A breakdown in the similarity betwen large and small events seems to occur for the events with moment magnitude below –2.5. The average values of seismic moment referred to the same range of corner frequency, however, are vastly different in various mining areas.  相似文献

Summary In a recent paperHunt andTanner [3]2) investigated the waves generated by a steadily moving two-dimensional pressure distribution, which was zero ahead of the disturbance and a constantp 0, tehind it, these regions being joined smoothly by a cubic function. Only those solutions with supercritical flow in both regions were considered, these were found to lead to an asymmetric solitary wave.This result is now extended to take account of the possibility of subcritical flow in either or both the regions, that is when there is a cnoidal wave train either behind and or ahead of the main solitary wave crest.The wave profiles are determined by the iterative method employed in the previous paper. Emf measurements were made on the cell Pt|Fe,(Fe,Mg)xSi2O6,SiO2|(ZrO2)0.85(CaO)0.15|Fe,FeO|Pt at 1000 K. Using the present data, the standard free energy of formation of ferrosilite (compound FeSiO3), from the component oxides FeO and SiO2, is calculated to be −6.35 ± 0.80 kJ/mol. The activity-composition relation for pyroxene solid solution shows that it has a positive deviation from ideality at 1000 K. Three types of seismic data recorded near Coalinga, California were analyzed to study the behavior of scattered waves: 1) aftershocks of the May 2, 1983 earthquake, recorded on verticalcomponent seismometers deployed by the USGS; 2) regional refraction profiles using large explosive sources recorded on essentially the same arrays above; 3) three common-midpoint (CMP) reflection surveys recorded with vibrator sources over the same area. Records from each data set were bandpassed filtered into 5 Hz wide passbands (over the range of 1–25 Hz), corrected for geometric spreading, and fit with an exponential model of amplitude decay. Decay rates were expressed in terms of inverse codaQ (Q c –1 ).Q c –1 values for earthquake and refraction data are generally comparable and show a slight decrease with increasing frequency. Decay rates for different source types recorded on proximate receivers show similar results, with one notable exception. One set of aftershocks shows an increase ofQ c –1 with frequency.Where the amplitude decay rates of surface and buried sources are similar, the coda decay results are consistent with other studies suggesting the importance of upper crustal scattering in the formation of coda. Differences in the variation ofQ c –1 with frequency can be correlated with differences in geologic structure near the source region, as revealed by CMP-stacked reflection data. A more detailed assessment of effects such as the depth dependence of scattered contributions to the coda and the role of intrinsic attenuation requires precise control of source-receiver field geometry and the study of synthetic seismic data calculated for velocity models developed from CMP reflection data.  相似文献

Three studies of site amplification factors, based on the recorded aftershocks, and one study based on strong motion data, are compared one with another and with the observed distribution of damage from the Northridge, CA, earthquake of 17 January 1994 (ML=6.4). In the epicentral area, when the peak ground velocities are larger than vm≈15 cm/s, nonlinear response of soil begins to distort the amplification factors determined from small amplitude (linear) wave motion. Moving into the area of near-field and strong ground motion (vm>30 cm/s), the site response becomes progressively more affected by the nonlinear soil response. Based on the published results, it is concluded that site amplification factors determined from small amplitude waves (aftershocks, small earthquakes, coda waves) and their transfer-function representation may be useful for small and distant earthquake motions, where soils and structures respond to earthquake waves in a linear manner. However in San Fernando Valley, during the Northridge earthquake, the observed distribution of damage did not correlate with site amplification determined from spectra of recorded weak motions. Mapping geographical distribution of site amplification using other than very strong motion data, therefore appears to be of little use for seismic hazard analyses.  相似文献

Using simulated coda waves, the resolution of the single-scattering model to extract codaQ (Q c ) and its power law frequency dependence was tested. The back-scattering model ofAki andChouet (1975) and the single isotropic-scattering model ofSato (1977) were examined. The results indicate that: (1) The inputQ c models are reasonably well approximated by the two methods; (2) almost equalQ c values are recovered when the techniques sample the same coda windows; (3) lowQ c models are well estimated in the frequency domain from the early and late part of the coda; and (4) models with highQ c values are more accurately extracted from late code measurements.  相似文献

Evidence for a signal near 19 years is found in 51 out of 65 rain gauge records in the tri-state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, While another term with period 10 to 11 years is found in 39 instances. These are identified as the 18.6-year luni-solarM n and solar cycleS c signals in climate variability. In terms of both amplitude and phase the luni-solar wave trains are highly nonstationary; in particular, the waves commonly change phase by 180°. Examples of theM n andS c terms in corn yield for Arkansas and Missouri are presented, and the implications for economic science briefly discussed.  相似文献

We theoretically study the scattering ofP, SV andSH waves by a zonal distribution of cracks, which simulates a fault fracture zone. An investigation is conducted how the geometrical properties of the crack distribution and the frictional characteristics of the crack surface are reflected in the attenuation and dispersion of incident waves, as well as in the amplitudes of the transmitted and reflected waves from the zone. If the crack distribution within the fault zone changes temporally during the preparation process of the expected earthquake, it will be important for earthquake prediction to monitor it, utilizing the scattering-induced wave phenomena.We consider the two-dimensional problem. Aligned cracks with the same length are assumed to be randomly distributed in a zone with a finite width, on which elastic waves are assumed to be incident. The distribution of cracks is assumed to be homogeneous and sparse. The crack surface is assumed to be stress-free, or to undergo viscous friction; the latter case simulates fluid-filled cracks. The opening displacement of the crack is assumed to be negligibly small. The idea of the mean wave formalism is employed in the analysis, and Foldy's approximation is assumed.When the crack surface is stress-free, it is commonly observed for every wave mode (P, SV andSH) that the attenuation coefficientQ –1 peaks aroundka1, the phase velocity is almost independent ofk in the rangeka<1 and it increases monotonically withk in the rangeka>1, wherek is the intrinsicS wavenumber anda is the half length of the crack. The effect of the friction is to shift the peak ofQ –1 and the corner of the phase velocity curve to the low wavenumber range. The high wavenumber asymptote ofQ –1 is proportional tok –1 independently of model parameters and the wave modes. If the seismological observation thatQ –1 ofS waves has a peak at around 0.5 Hz in the earth's crust is combined with our results, the upper limit of crack size within the crust is estimated about 4 km. The information regarding the transmitted and reflected waves, such as the high wavenumber limit of the amplitude of the transmitted wave etc., allows estimation of the strength of the friction.  相似文献
