We perform an extensive linear investigation of the nonaxisymmetric disk modes referred to in the literature as P, I, and J modes in self-gravitating polytropic toroids with power law angular velocity distributions. For selected models, we also follow the development of instability from the linear regime through the quasi-linear regime to deep into the nonlinear regime. We consider modes with azimuthal dependence e imφ , where m is an integer and φ is the azimuthal angle. We find that instability sets in through m=2 barlike I modes at T/|W|∼0.16–0.18 depending upon the chosen angular velocity law where T is the rotational kinetic energy and W is the gravitational energy of the toroid. Instability in the barlike I mode peaks in strength around T/|W|=0.22–0.23 after which it weakens, eventually stabilizing around T/|W|∼0.25–0.26. One-armed modes (m=1 modes) become unstable just after instability in the m=2I modes sets in; instability in m=1 modes sets in at T/|W|∼0.19. They dominate the barlike I modes in toroids with T/|W|≳0.25. However, almost immediately after the m=1 mode overtakes the barlike I mode, higher-m J modes appear. J modes with m=2, 3, and 4 become unstable for T/|W|≳0.25–0.26, 0.23–0.25, and 0.25–0.26, respectively. m≥3J modes dominate the m=1 mode in toroids with T/|W|≳0.27. As T/|W| increases further, nonaxisymmetric instability sets in through higher and higher m modes. We find quantitative agreement between the early nonlinear behavior of the tested unstable toroids and our linear results. Quasi-linear modeling suggests that a gravitational self-interaction torque which arises early in the nonlinear regime saturates growth of the mode and leads to significant transport of mass and angular momentum. Neither I mode nor J mode instabilities produce prompt fission in toroids.  相似文献

New methods are applied to samples of classical cepheids in the galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Small Magellanic Cloud to determine the interstellar extinction law for the classical cepheids, R B:R V:R I:R J:R H:R K= 4.190:3.190:1.884:0.851:0.501:0.303, the color excesses for classical cepheids in the galaxy, E(B-V)=-0.382-0.168logP+0.766(V-I), and the color excesses for classical cepheids in the LMC and SMC, E(B-V)=-0.374-0.166logP+0.766(V-I). The dependence of the intrinsic color (B-V)0 on the metallicity of classical cepheids is discussed. The intrinsic color (V-I)0 is found to be absolutely independent of the metallicity of classical cepheids. A high precision formula is obtained for calculating the intrinsic colors of classical cepheids in the galaxy: (<B>-<V>)0=0.365(±0.011)+0.328(±0.012)logP.  相似文献

We present new laboratory data on the multiplets 2s 2 1 S -2s2p 3 P, 2s 22p 2 P - 2s2p 2 4 P, and 2s 22p 2 3 P - 2s2p 3 5 S in nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine, and discuss theZ-dependence of their wave-numbers. These multiplets are very faint in laboratory light sources, but can become prominent in astrophysical sources of low density. Our results confirm the solar identifications of the nitrogen and oxygen multiplets made by Burtonet al. Predicted positions of the corresponding multiplets in neon are given.  相似文献

The electron collision excitation rates recently calculated for transitions in Si xiii by Keenan et al. (1987) are used to derive the electron temperature sensitive ratio G(=(f + i)/r and the density sensitive ratio R(=f/i), where i, f, and r are the intercombination (1s 2 1 S – 1s2p 3 P 1, 2) forbidden (1s 2 1 S – 1s2s 3 S), and resonance (1s 2 1 S – 1s2p 1 P), transitions respectively. Also estimated are the values of R in the low-density limit (R 0) as a function of electron temperature. The theoretical G ratio at the temperature of maximum emissivity for Si xiii, G(T m) = 0.70, is in much better agreement with the observed G for the 1985, May 5 flare determined by McKenzie et al. (G = 0.60 ± 0.07) than is the earlier calculation of Pradhan, who derived G(T m) = 0.85. The error in the observed R 0 ratio is so large that both our result and Pradhan's fall within the acceptable limits of uncertainty and hence one cannot estimate which of the two is the more accurate.  相似文献

We augment our scenario for the formation of astronomical objects from macroscopic superstrings by the assumption that the central matter keeps its identity in the fragmentation. From the condition that the angular momentum per mass squared of this matter should be less than the Kerr limit G/c, we obtain upper limits for the ratio of the mass of central black holes M(BH) to the mass M of the host object. This limit is M(BH)/M ≈ 0.001, and, expressed in observed quantities, approximately M(BH)/Mσ2/(v · c) where σ is the r.m.s. velocity, v the rotational velocity and c the velocity of light. The valuesM(BH) agree with the observed behaviour both in order of magnitude and in the variation with velocity dispersion. (© 2003 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We study the stability of motion in the 3-body Sitnikov problem, with the two equal mass primaries (m 1 = m 2 = 0.5) rotating in the x, y plane and vary the mass of the third particle, 0 ≤ m 3 < 10−3, placed initially on the z-axis. We begin by finding for the restricted problem (with m 3 = 0) an apparently infinite sequence of stability intervals on the z-axis, whose width grows and tends to a fixed non-zero value, as we move away from z = 0. We then estimate the extent of “islands” of bounded motion in x, y, z space about these intervals and show that it also increases as |z| grows. Turning to the so-called extended Sitnikov problem, where the third particle moves only along the z-axis, we find that, as m 3 increases, the domain of allowed motion grows significantly and chaotic regions in phase space appear through a series of saddle-node bifurcations. Finally, we concentrate on the general 3-body problem and demonstrate that, for very small masses, m 3 ≈ 10−6, the “islands” of bounded motion about the z-axis stability intervals are larger than the ones for m 3 = 0. Furthermore, as m 3 increases, it is the regions of bounded motion closest to z = 0 that disappear first, while the ones further away “disperse” at larger m 3 values, thus providing further evidence of an increasing stability of the motion away from the plane of the two primaries, as observed in the m 3 = 0 case.  相似文献

The recent twelve-state R-matrix calculations of electron excitation rates in Ciii by Berrington are used to derive level populations applicable to the solar transition region. Line ratios R = I(2p 2 3 P e - 2s2p 3 P °)/I(2s2p 1 P ° - 2s 2 1 S e ) and R 2=I(2p 2 1 S e - 2s2p 1 P °)/I(2p 2 3 P e - 2s2p 3 P °) deduced from these data in conjunction with the relevent transition probabilities are found to be in much better agreement with the observed quiet Sun values than those determined from the level population calculations of Keenan et al.  相似文献

We present NeV/MgV and SiVII/MgVII theoretical line intensity ratios as a function of electron densityN e and temperatureT e . These are shown in the form of ratio-ratio diagrams, which should in principle allow bothN e andT e to be deduced for the emitting region of the solar plasma. We apply these diagnostics in the solar atmosphere, and discuss the available observations made from space. In most cases, however, we deduceN e andT e from the computed absolute line intensities in a spherically symmetric model atmosphere of the Sun. Possible future applications of this investigation to spectral data from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We consider a system of nonlinear spinor and a Bianchi type I gravitational fields in presence of viscous fluid. The nonlinear term in the spinor field Lagrangian is chosen to be λ F, with λ being a self-coupling constant and F being a function of the invariants I an J constructed from bilinear spinor forms S and P. Self-consistent solutions to the spinor and BI gravitational field equations are obtained in terms of τ, where τ is the volume scale of BI universe. System of equations for τ and ε, where ε is the energy of the viscous fluid, is deduced. This system is solved numerically for some special cases.   相似文献

The ratios I(K 1)/I(H 1) and I(K 3)/I(H 3) were calculated from four semi-empirical models of sunspot umbra. We determined the dependencies of both ratios of such parameters as temperature gradient and atmospheric opacity. A certain influence on the expected ratios I(K 1)/I(H 1) and I(K 3)/I(H 3) can also come from the FIP effect provided it exists in the chromosphere above sunspot umbra. Theoretical and observed values of I(K 1)/I(H 1) and I(K 3)/I(H 3) are compared. It is shown that for one of the sunspots we observed, the values obtained for the ratio I(K 1)/I(H 1) cannot be explained in terms of existing umbra models.  相似文献

The equation of radiative acoustics is derived by taking into account the effect of a non-transverse magnetic field, and the solutions are schematically represented. The main results shown in Paper I and Paper II are valid even in the presence of a non-transverse magnetic field, and the only difference is that theadiabatic, isothermal, andisentropic speeds of sound and theradiation-acoustic speed in Paper I which respectively correspond to theadiabatic, isothermal, andisentropic magnetoacoustic speeds and theradiation-magnetoacoustic speed in Paper II are replaced by the sets of speeds ofadiabatic, isothermal, isentropic, andradiation-acoustic fast andslow waves, respectively.  相似文献

The stellar equilibrium equations for given surface pressureP * and temperatureT *, and in the absence of convection, are translated into a nonlinear integral equation, in which the radiusR of the star enters as an eigenvalue. We show that under broad mathematical assumptions on the constitutive equations (equation of state, opacity and energy generation) a global existence and uniqueness property can be formulated. If a valueP M is selected, which restricts the allowed pressure and temperature range |P(r)P *|+E|T(r)T *P M (E, arbitrary constant of dimensions of a pressure over temperature), thenat least one solutionP(r),T(r) exists in the pressure-temperature range chosen, for anyR<R E . This solution isunique forR<R c .R E andR c are expressed in terms of the constitutive equations, and of the pressure-temperature range adopted. A physical argument in favour of the stability of this solution is presented.  相似文献

The modified theories of gravity, especially the f(R) gravity, have attracted much attention in the last decade. In this context, we study the exact vacuum solutions of Bianchi type I, III and Kantowski-Sachs spacetimes in the metric version of f(R) gravity. The field equations are solved by taking expansion scalar θ proportional to shear scalar σ which gives A=B n , where A and B are the metric coefficients. The physical behavior of the solutions has been discussed using some physical quantities. Also, the function of the Ricci scalar is evaluated in each case.  相似文献

Relative level populations in Oiii, determined using R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates, are used to derive the theoretical emission line ratios R 1 = I(525.80 Å)/I(599.62 Å), R 2 = I(507.41 Å)/I(599.62 Å), R 3 = I(507.71 Å)/I(599.62 Å), and R 4 = I(508.18 Å)/I(599.62 Å). Electron temperatures deduced from the observed values of these ratios for several solar features obtained with the NRL S082A slitless spectrograph on board Skylab are in good agreement, and also compare favourably with that of maximum Oiii fractional abundance in ionisation equilibrium, logT max = 4.96. These results provide experimental support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the line ratio calculations.  相似文献

The combination of dispersion measures of pulsars, distances from the model of Cordes & Lazio (2002) and emission measures from the WHAM survey enabled a statistical study of electron densities and filling factors of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the Milky Way. The emission measures were corrected for absorption and contributions from beyond the pulsar distance. For a sample of 157 pulsars at |b | > 5. and 60° < ℓ < 360°, located in mainly interarm regions within about 3 kpc from the Sun, we find that: (1) The average volume filling factor along the line of sight and the mean density in ionized clouds are inversely correlated: ( ) = (0.0184 ± 0.0011) –1.07 ± 0.03 for the ranges 0.03 < < 2 cm–3 and 0.8 > > 0.01. This relationship is very tight. The inverse correlation of and causes the well‐known constancy of the average electron density along the line of sight. As (z ) increases with distance from the Galactic plane |z |, the average size of the ionized clouds increases with |z |. (2) For |z| < 0.9 kpc the local density in clouds n c(z ) and local filling factor f (z ) are inversely correlated because the local electron density n e(z ) = f (z )n c(z ) is constant. We suggest that f (z ) reaches a maximum value of >0.3 near |z | = 0.9 kpc, whereas n c(z ) continues to decrease to higher |z |, thus causing the observed flattening in the distribution of dispersion measures perpendicular to the Galactic plane above this height. (3) For |z | < 0.9 kpc the local distributions n c(z ), f (z ) and (z ) have the same scale height which is in the range 250 < h ≲ 500 pc. (4) The average degree of ionization of the warm atomic gas (z ) increases towards higher |z | similarly to (z ). Towards |z | = 1 kpc, (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.05 and (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.02. Near |z | = 1 kpc most of the warm, atomic hydrogen is ionized. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We have used photometric images of ten barred galaxies in the B and I bands to infer the geometrical and dynamical parameters of their bars: Their length, (R bar), their strengths, (S b), and their corotation radii, (R CR).These parameters have been obtained studying azimuthal profiles from the B and I band images of the galaxies. We find that R CR is in all cases slightly larger than R bar, with mean values close to 1.2 R bar. We have also found a dependence of the ratio R CR/R bar on S bar. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An optical approach begins by interpreting the gravitational redshift resulting to a change in the relative velocity of light due to the medium of propagation in the gravitational field. The discussion continues by pointing out an agreement in structure between the equation for rays in geometrical optics and the geodesic equation of general relativity. From their comparison we learn that the path of rays should be written in the form ds 2=n 2(r)dr 2+r 2 2, not ds 2=dr 2+r 2 2, in a medium with spherical symmetry of refractive index n(r). The development of an optical analogy suggests introducing n 2(r) in place of g rr as an optical version of the Schwarzschild metric. In form and content, n 2(r) is different from g rr . The optical point of view replaces the general-relativity explanations in terms of time and gravitation.  相似文献

The effect of X-ray irradiation on the line-driven stellar wind in X-ray binary systems is studied. The product of the X-ray luminosityL x and the densityn in the wind is a measure to distinguish between the optically thin and thick wind regimes. For an X-ray source of the radiation temperature of 10 keV, the critical value(L x n) c , is of the order of 1037 erg s–1 cm–3; hence, most of wind-fed X-ray sources lie in the optically thick wind regime because ofL x n>(L x n) c . Then the wind structure is determined not only by the parameter =(L x /nR 2),R the distance from the X-ray source, but also by the optical thickness due to helium. The formation of fully ionized helium region depends onL x andn in a way different from that of the Strömgren sphere. In such an optically thick wind, the region behind the He II ionization boundary is little affected by X-ray irradiation and the trace elements remain to be responsible for wind acceleration. Thus, its location is important for the structure of the wind and the interpretation of various phenomena in objects such as wind-fed X-ray pulsars.  相似文献

We introduce a new approach for investigating the weak field limit of vacuum field equations in f(R) gravity and we find the weak field limit of f(R)=R+μ 4/R gravity. Furthermore, we study the strong gravity regime in R+μ 4/R model of f(R) gravity. We show the existence of strong gravitational field in vacuum for such model. We find out in the limit μ→0, the weak field limit and the strong gravitational field can be regarded as a perturbed Schwarzschild metric.  相似文献

Results are presented for several theoretical line ratios in Nev involving transitions between multiplets in the 2s 22p 2 and 2s2p 3 configurations. A comparison of these with solar data from the S082A and S-055 instruments on board Skylab reveals generally good agreement between theory and experiment, especially in the case of the high-resolution (S082A) observations. However the 2s 22p 2 1 D – 2s2p 3 1 P (365.6 Å) and 2s 22p 2 3P – 2s2p 3 3 S (359 Å) lines appear to be blended, possibly with transitions in Fex and Fexi/Fexiii, respectively. We note that the intensity ratio I(365.6 Å)/I(416.2 Å) should be a valuable calibration check for a high-resolution extreme ultraviolet instrument in the spectral range 360–420 Å.  相似文献
