We present 21-cm H  i line observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 1705. Previous optical observations show a strong outflow powered by an ongoing starburst dominating the H  ii morphology and kinematics. In contrast, most of the H  i lies in a rotating disc. An extraplanar H  i spur accounts for ∼8 per cent of the total H  i mass, and is possibly associated with the H  ii outflow. The inferred mass loss rate out of the core of the galaxy is significant, ∼0.2 − 2 M yr−1, but does not dominate the H  i dynamics. Mass model fits to the rotation curve show that the dark matter (DM) halo is dominant at nearly all radii and has a central density ρ0 ≈ 0.1 M pc−3: ten times higher than typically found in dwarf irregular galaxies, but similar to the only other mass-modelled blue compact dwarf, NGC 2915. This large difference strongly indicates that there is little evolution between dwarf irregular and blue compact dwarf types. Instead, dominant DM haloes may regulate the morphology of dwarf galaxies by setting the critical surface density for disc star formation. Neither our data nor catalogue searches reveal any likely external trigger to the starburst in NGC 1705.  相似文献

We use the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey to construct a small, but purely X-ray flux-limited sample of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). The sample includes only four systems, two of which (RX J1715.6+6856 and RX J1831.7+6511) are new discoveries. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the new CVs and measure orbital periods of 1.64 ± 0.02 and 4.01 ± 0.03 h for RX J1715.6+6856 and RX J1831.7+6511, respectively. We also estimate distances for all the CVs in our sample, based mainly on their apparent brightness in the infrared. The space density of the CV population represented by our small sample is  1.1+2.3−0.7× 10−5 pc−3  . We can also place upper limits on the space density of any subpopulation of CVs too faint to be included in the NEP survey. In particular, we show that if the overall space density of CVs is as high as  2 × 10−4 pc−3  (as has been predicted theoretically), the vast majority of CVs must be fainter than   L X≃ 2 × 1029 erg s−1  .  相似文献

We show how the continuity equation can be used to determine pattern speeds in the Milky Way Galaxy (MWG). This method, first discussed by Tremaine & Weinberg in the context of external galaxies, requires projected positions, ( l , b ), and line-of-sight velocities for a spatially complete sample of relaxed tracers. If the local standard of rest (LSR) has a zero velocity in the radial direction ( u LSR), then the quantity that is measured is  Δ V ≡Ωp R 0- V LSR  , where Ωp is the pattern speed of the non-axisymmetric feature, R 0 is the distance of the Sun from the Galactic centre and V LSR is the tangential motion of the LSR, including the circular velocity. We use simple models to assess the reliability of the method for measuring a single, constant pattern speed of either a bar or spiral in the inner MWG. We then apply the method to the OH/IR stars in the ATCA/VLA OH 1612-MHz survey of Sevenster et al., finding  Δ V =252±41 km s-1,  if   u LSR=0  . Assuming further that   R 0=8 kpc  and   V LSR=220 km s-1,  this gives  Ωp=59±5 km s-1 kpc-1  with a possible systematic error of perhaps 10 km s−1 kpc−1. The non-axisymmetric feature for which we measure this pattern speed must be in the disc of the MWG.  相似文献

We use proper motions and parallaxes from the new reduction of Hipparcos data and Geneva–Copenhagen radial velocities for a complete sample of  ∼15 000  main-sequence and subgiant stars, and new Padova isochrones to constrain the kinematics and star formation history of the solar neighbourhood. We rederive the solar motion and the structure of the local velocity ellipsoids. When the principal velocity dispersions are assumed to increase with time as   t β  , the index β is larger for  σ W W ≈ 0.45  ) than for  σ U U ≈ 0.31)  . For the three-dimensional velocity dispersion, we obtain  β= 0.35  . We exclude saturation of disc heating after  ∼3 Gyr  as proposed by Quillen & Garnett. Saturation after  ≳4 Gyr  combined with an abrupt increase in velocity dispersion for the oldest stars cannot be excluded. For all our models, the star formation rate (SFR) is declining, being a factor of 2–7 lower now than it was at the beginning. Models in which the SFR declines exponentially favour very high disc ages between 11.5 and 13 Gyr and exclude ages below  ∼10.5 Gyr  as they yield worse fits to the number density and velocity dispersion of red stars. Models in which the SFR is the sum of two declining exponentials representing the thin and thick discs favour ages between 10.5 and 12 Gyr with a lower limit of  ∼10.0 Gyr  . Although in our models the SFR peaked surprisingly early, the mean formation time of solar-neighbourhood stars is later than in ab initio models of galaxy formation, probably on account of weaknesses in such models.  相似文献

The space motions of Mira variables are derived from radial velocities, Hipparcos proper motions and a period–luminosity relation. The previously known dependence of Mira kinematics on the period of pulsation is confirmed and refined. In addition, it is found that Miras with periods in the range 145–200 d in the general Solar neighbourhood have a net radial outward motion from the Galactic Centre of 75±18 km s−1. This, together with a lag behind the circular velocity of Galactic rotation of 98±19 km s−1, is interpreted as evidence for an elongation of their orbits, with their major axes aligned at an angle of ∼17° with the Sun–Galactic Centre line, towards positive Galactic longitudes. This concentration seems to be a continuation to the Solar circle and beyond of the bar-like structure of the Galactic bulge, with the orbits of some local Miras probably penetrating into the bulge. These conclusions are not sensitive to the distance scale adopted. A further analysis is given of the short-period (SP) red group of Miras discussed in companion papers in this series. In Appendix A the mean radial velocities and other data for 842 oxygen-rich Mira-like variables are tabulated. These velocities were derived from published optical and radio observations.  相似文献

The amount of mass contained in low-mass objects is investigated anew. Instead of using a mass–luminosity relation to convert a luminosity function to a mass function, I predict the mass–luminosity relation from assumed mass functions and the luminosity functions of Jahreiss & Wielen and Gould, Bahcall & Flynn. Comparison of the resulting mass–luminosity relations with data for binary stars constrains the permissible mass functions. If the mass function is assumed to be a power law, the best-fitting slope lies either side of the critical slope, α =−2, below which the mass in low-mass objects is divergent, depending on the luminosity function adopted. If these power-law mass functions are truncated at 0.001 M, the contribution to the local density from stars lies between 0.013 and 0.10 M pc−3 depending on the mass at which the mass function is normalized and the adopted value of α . Recent dynamical estimates of the local mass density rule out stellar mass densities above ∼0.05 M pc−3. Hence, power laws steeper than α =−2 that extend down to 0.001 M are allowed only if one adopts an implausible normalization of the mass function. If the mass function is generalized from a power law to a low-order polynomial in log( M ), the mass in stars with M <0.1 M is either negligible or strongly divergent, depending on the order of the polynomial adopted.  相似文献

To study the kinematics of O-B5 giant stars (luminosity class III), 290 non-Gould belt stars with proper motions taken from the Hipparcos catalogue are used, of which 107 have radial velocities taken from other sources. Semidefinite programming solves for the kinematical parameters and the coefficients of the velocity ellipsoid. The condition that both solutions must yield the same solar velocity is enforced. The results obtained are reasonable: solar velocity of 13.83 ± 0.17 km s−1; Oort's constants, in units of km s−1 kpc−1, A = 16.08 ± 0.72 and   B =−10.74 ± 0.65,  implying a rotational velocity of 228.0 ± 21.4 km s−1 if we take the distance to the Galactic Centre as 8.5 ± 1.1 kpc; velocity dispersions, in units of km s−1, of  σ x = 32.44 ± 5.04, σ y = 26.16 ± 2.75, σ z = 18.71 ± 2.39  with a vertex deviation of      相似文献

We present observations ( B, R, K , Hα and H  i ) of six nearby low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). They show an astonishing amount of variety; while some systems appear smooth and featureless, others resolve into loose assemblies of gas clouds. We have derived rotation curves, gas surface density profiles and star formation thresholds for three of the galaxies.
The results have been used to test two ideas describing their star formation: one in which star formation depends solely on the H  i gas surface density, and one that depends on differential rotation. We find that a critical H  i surface density criterion in the range  2.6–12.6 × 1020 cm−2 (2.1–10.1 M pc−2)  best describes the star-forming ability of these galaxies on local and global scales. A critical gas surface density based on the rotation of the gas is also able to describe the results on a global scale for two of the three galaxies for which we were able to derive rotation curves.  相似文献

So far, six mechanisms have been proposed to account for the Galactic disc heating. Of these, the most important appear to be a combination of scattering of stars by molecular clouds and by spiral arms. We study a further mechanism, namely the repeated disc impact of the original Galactic globular cluster population up to the present. We find that globular clusters could have contributed at most a small fraction of the current vertical energy of the disc, as they could heat the whole disc to  σ z = 5.5 km s−1  (c.f. the observed 18 and 39 km s−1 for the thick and thin discs, respectively). We find that the rate of rise of disc heat (  α= 0.22  in  σ z ∼ t α  with t being time) is close to that found for scattering by molecular clouds.  相似文献

A parametrized model of the mass distribution within the Milky Way is fitted to the available observational constraints. The most important single parameter is the ratio of the scalelength R d* of the stellar disc to R 0. The disc and bulge dominate v c( R ) at R ≲ R 0 only for R d,*/ R 0≲0.3. Since the only knowledge we have of the halo derives from studies like the present one, we allow it to contribute to the density at all radii. When allowed this freedom, however, the halo causes changes in assumptions relating to R  ≪  R 0 to affect profoundly the structure of the best-fitting model at R  ≫  R 0. For example, changing the disc slightly from an exponential surface-density profile significantly changes the form of v c( R ) at R  ≫  R 0, where the disc makes a negligible contribution to v c. Moreover, minor changes in the constraints can cause the halo to develop a deep hole at its centre that is not physically plausible. These problems call into question the proposition that flat rotation curves arise because galaxies have physically distinct haloes rather than outwards-increasing mass-to-light ratios.   The mass distribution of the Galaxy and the relative importance of its various components will remain very uncertain until more observational data can be used to constrain mass models. Data that constrain the Galactic force field at z ≳ R and at R  >  R 0 are especially important.  相似文献

A survey of the entire southern sky for millisecond and low-luminosity pulsars using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope has now been completed. The survey detected 298 pulsars, of which 101 were previously unknown. The new pulsars include 17 millisecond pulsars. This is the largest sample of both normal and millisecond pulsars detected in any survey. Combining our sample with other recent surveys in the Northern Hemisphere, we present a statistical study of the populations of both normal and millisecond pulsars. We find that the improved statistics allow us to estimate the number and birth-rate of both types of pulsar down to a 400-MHz luminosity limit of 1 mJy kpc2. The local surface densities of potentially observable normal pulsars and millisecond pulsars are both about 30 kpc−2, corresponding to ∼ 30000 potentially observable pulsars of each type in the Galaxy. Once beaming effects are taken into consideration we estimate that the active population of normal pulsars is ∼ 160000. Although there is evidence for flattening of the luminosity function of normal pulsars, this is not evident for millisecond pulsars which probably have a substantial population with luminosities below 1 mJy kpc2. After correcting for beaming effects, we estimate that a normal pulsar is born with a luminosity greater than 1 mJy kpc2 between once every 60 and 330 yr in the Galaxy. The birth-rate of millisecond pulsars is at least 3 × 10−6 yr−1 above the same luminosity limit. Modelling the observed transverse speeds of millisecond pulsars using a dynamical simulation, we find their mean birth velocity to be 130 ± 30 km s−1, significantly lower than that of the normal pulsars.  相似文献

A two-dimensional velocity distribution in the UV plane has been obtained for stars in the solar neighbourhood, using Hipparcos astrometry for over 4000 'survey' stars with parallaxes greater than 10 mas and radial velocities found in the Hipparcos Input Catalogue. In addition to the already known grouping characteristics (field stars plus young moving groups), the velocity distribution seems to exhibit a more complex structure characterized by several longer branches running almost parallel to each other across the UV plane. By using the wavelet transform technique to analyse the distribution, the branches are visible at relatively high significance levels of 90 per cent or higher. They are roughly equidistant with a separation of about 15 km s−1 for early-type stars and about 20 km s−1 for late-type stars, creating an overall quasi-periodic structure which can also be detected by means of a two-dimensional Fourier transform. This branch-like velocity distribution might be caused by the Galactic spiral structure.  相似文献

We present and analyse the kinematics and orbits for a sample of 488 open clusters (OCs) in the Galaxy. The velocity ellipsoid for our present sample is derived as  (σ U , σ V , σ W ) = (28.7, 15.8, 11.0) km s−1  which represents a young thin-disc population. We also confirm that the velocity dispersions increase with the age of a cluster subsample. The orbits of OCs are calculated with three Galactic gravitational potential models. The errors of orbital parameters are also calculated considering the intrinsic variation of the orbital parameters and the effects of observational uncertainties. The observational uncertainties dominate the errors of derived orbital parameters. The vertical motions of clusters calculated using different Galactic disc models are rather different. The observed radial metallicity gradient of clusters is derived with a slope of   b =−0.070 ± 0.011   dex kpc−1. The radial metallicity gradient of clusters based on their apogalactic distances is also derived with a slope of   b =−0.082 ± 0.014   dex kpc−1. The distribution of derived orbital eccentricities for OCs is very similar to that derived for the field population of dwarfs and giants in the thin disc.  相似文献

We present new models for the formation of disc galaxies that improve upon previous models by following the detailed accretion and cooling of the baryonic mass, and by using realistic distributions of specific angular momentum. Under the assumption of detailed angular momentum conservation, the discs that form have density distributions that are more centrally concentrated than an exponential. We examine the influence of star formation, bulge formation, and feedback on the outcome of the surface brightness distributions of the stars. Low angular momentum haloes yield disc galaxies with a significant bulge component and with a stellar disc that is close to exponential, in good agreement with observations. High angular momentum haloes, on the other hand, produce stellar discs that are much more concentrated than an exponential, in clear conflict with observations. At large radii, the models reveal distinct truncation radii in both the stars and the cold gas. The stellar truncation radii result from our implementation of star formation threshold densities, and are in excellent agreement with observations. The truncation radii in the density distribution of the cold gas reflect the maximum specific angular momentum of the gas that has cooled. We find that these truncation radii occur at H  i surface densities of roughly 1 M pc−2, in conflict with observations. We examine various modifications to our models, including feedback, viscosity, and dark matter haloes with constant-density cores, but show that the models consistently fail to produce bulge less discs with exponential surface brightness profiles. This signals a new problem for the standard model of disc formation: if the baryonic component of the protogalaxies out of which disc galaxies form has the same angular momentum distribution as the dark matter, discs are too compact.  相似文献

We confirm and extend the recent finding that the central surface density  μ0D≡ r 0ρ0  of galaxy dark matter haloes, where r 0 and  ρ0  are the halo core radius and central density, is nearly constant and independent of galaxy luminosity. Based on the co-added rotation curves (RCs) of ∼1000 spiral galaxies, the mass models of individual dwarf irregular and spiral galaxies of late and early types with high-quality RCs, and the galaxy–galaxy weak-lensing signals from a sample of spiral and elliptical galaxies, we find that  log μ0D= 2.15 ± 0.2  in units of  log(M pc−2)  . We also show that the observed kinematics of Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies are consistent with this value. Our results are obtained for galactic systems spanning over 14 mag, belonging to different Hubble types and whose mass profiles have been determined by several independent methods. In the same objects, the approximate constancy of  μ0D  is in sharp contrast to the systematical variations, by several orders of magnitude, of galaxy properties, including  ρ0  and central stellar surface density.  相似文献

We assess the constraints imposed by the observed extragalactic background light (EBL) on the cosmic history of star formation and the stellar-mass density today. The logarithmic slope of the galaxy number–magnitude relation from the Southern Hubble Deep Field imaging survey is flatter than 0.4 in all seven UBVIJHK optical bandpasses, i.e. the light from resolved galaxies has converged from the UV to the near-IR. We find a lower limit to the surface brightness of the optical extragalactic sky of about 15 nW m−2 sr−1, comparable to the intensity of the far-IR background from COBE data. Assuming a Salpeter initial mass function with a lower cut-off consistent with observations of M subdwarf disc stars, we set a lower limit of Ωg+s h 2>0.0013  I 50 to the visible (processed gas + stars) mass density required to generate an EBL at a level of 50  I 50 nW m−2 sr−1; our 'best-guess' value is Ωg+s h 2≈0.0031  I 50. Motivated by the recent microlensing results of the MACHO collaboration, we consider the possibility that massive dark haloes around spiral galaxies are composed of faint white dwarfs, and show that only a small fraction (≲5 per cent) of the nucleosynthetic baryons can be locked in the remnants of intermediate-mass stars forming at z F≲5, as the bright early phases of such haloes would otherwise overproduce the observed EBL.  相似文献

Possible orbital histories of the Sgr dwarf galaxy are explored. A special-purpose N -body code is used to construct the first models of the Milky Way–Sgr dwarf system in which both the Milky Way and the Sgr dwarf are represented by full N -body systems and followed for a Hubble time. These models are used to calibrate a semi-analytic model of the Sgr dwarf's orbit that enables us to explore a wider parameter space than is accessible to the N -body models. We conclude that the extant data on the Sgr dwarf are compatible with a wide range of orbital histories. At one extreme the Sgr dwarf initially possesses ∼1011 M and starts from a Galactocentric distance R D(0)≳200 kpc. At the other extreme the Sgr dwarf starts with ∼109 M and R D(0)∼60 kpc, similar to its present apocentric distance. In all cases the Sgr dwarf is initially dark matter dominated and the current velocity dispersion of the Sgr dwarf's dark matter is tightly constrained to be 21±2 km s−1. This number is probably compatible with the smaller measured dispersion of the Sgr dwarf's stars because of (i) the dynamical difference between dark and luminous matter, and (ii) velocity anisotropy.  相似文献

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are a viable candidate for the relic abundance of dark matter (DM) produced in the early universe. So far, WIMPs have eluded direct detection through interactions with baryonic matter. Neutrino emission from accumulated WIMP annihilations in the solar core has been proposed as a signature of DM, but has not yet been detected. These null results may be due to small-scale DM density fluctuations in the halo with the density of our local region being lower than the average  (∼0.3 GeV cm−3)  . However, the accumulated neutrino signal from WIMP annihilations in the Galactic stellar disc would be insensitive to local density variations. Inside the disc, DM can be captured by stars causing an enhanced annihilation rate and therefore a potentially higher neutrino flux than what would be observed from elsewhere in the halo. We estimate a neutrino flux from the WIMP annihilations in the stellar disc to be enhanced by more than an order of magnitude compared to the neutrino fluxes from the halo. We offer a conservative estimate for this enhanced flux, based on the WIMP–nucleon cross-sections obtained from direct-detection experiments by assuming a density of  ∼0.3 GeV cm−3  for the local DM. We also compare the detectability of these fluxes with a signal of diffuse high-energy neutrinos produced in the Milky Way by the interaction of cosmic rays with the interstellar medium. These comparative signals should be observable by large neutrino detectors.  相似文献

We present 13 CO J  = 1 − 0 line observations of the H  ii region complex W51B located in the high-velocity (HV) stream. These observations reveal a filamentary and clumpy structure in the molecular gas. The mean local standard of rest (LSR) velocity ∼ + 65 km s−1 of the molecular gas in this region is greater than the maximum velocities allowed by kinematic Galactic rotation curves. The size and mass of the molecular clouds are ∼ 48 × 17 pc2 and ∼ 2.4 × 105 M⊙ respectively. In a position–velocity diagram, molecular gas in the southern part comprises a redshifted ring structure with v LSR=+ 60 to +73 km s−1. The velocity gradient of this ring is ∼ 0.5 km s−1 pc−1, and the mass is ∼ 6.2 × 104 M⊙. If we assume that the ring is expanding with a uniform velocity, the expansion velocity, radius and kinetic energy are ∼ 7 km s−1, ∼ 13 pc and ∼ 3.0 × 10 49 erg respectively. The kinetic energy and mass spectrum of the ring could be explained by an expanding cylindrical cloud with a centrally condensed mass distribution. The locations of two compact H  ii regions, G49.0−0.3 and G48.9−0.3, coincide with the two molecular clumps in this ring. We discuss star formation, and the mechanism that produced the ring structure.  相似文献
