If gravitational microlensing occurs in a binary source system, both source components are magnified, and the resulting light curve deviates from the standard one of a single source event. However, in most cases only one source component is highly magnified and the other component (the companion) can be treated as a simple blending source: this is a blending approximation. In this paper we show that, unlike the light curves, the astrometric curves, representing the trajectories of the source image centroid, of an important fraction of binary source events will not be sufficiently well-modelled by the blending effect alone. This is because the centroid shift induced by the source companion endures to considerable distances from the lens. Therefore, in determining the lens parameters from astrometric curves to be measured by future high-precision astrometric instruments, it will be important to take the full effect of the source companion into consideration.  相似文献

Despite the suspected binarity for a significant fraction of Galactic lenses, the current photometric surveys detected binary microlensing events only for a small fraction of the total events. The detection efficiency is especially low for non-caustic crossing events, which comprise the majority of the binary lensing events, as a result of the absence of distinctive features in their light curves combined with small deviations from the standard light curve of a single point-mass event. In addition, even if they are detected, it will be difficult to determine the solution of the binary lens parameters owing to the severe degeneracy problem. In this paper, we investigate the properties of binary lensing event expected when they are astrometrically observed by using high-precision interferometers. For this, we construct vector field maps of excess centroid shifts, which represent the deviations of the binary lensing centroid shifts from those of a single lensing event as a function of source position. From the analysis of the maps, we find that the excess centroid shifts are substantial in a considerably large area around caustics. In addition, they have characteristic sizes and directions depending strongly on the source positions with respect to the caustics and the resulting trajectories of the light centroid (astrometric trajectories) have distinctive features, which can be distinguished from the deviations caused by other reasons. We classify the types of the deviations and investigate where they occur. Because of the strong dependence of the centroid shifts on the lens system geometry combined with the distinctive features in the observed astrometric trajectories, astrometric binary lensing observations will provide an important tool that can probe the properties of the Galactic binary lens population.  相似文献

If a source star is gravitationally microlensed by a multiple lens system, the resulting light curve can have significant deviations from the standard form of a single lens event. The chance of producing significant deviations becomes important when the separations between the component lenses are equivalent to the combined angular Einstein ring radius of the system. For multiple lens systems composed of more than two lenses, however, this condition is difficult to meet because the orbits of such systems are unstable. Even if events are caused by a multiple lens system with stable orbits where a pair of lenses are closely located and the other component (a third body) has a wide separation from the pair, identifying the lens multiplicity photometrically will be difficult because the event will be identified by either a binary lens event caused by the close pair of lenses or a single lens event caused by the third body. In this paper, we show that if a seemingly binary lens event is followed up astrometrically using future high-precision interferometers, the existence of an additional third body can be identified via a repeating event. We show that the signatures of third bodies can be unambiguously identified from the characteristic distortions they make in the centroid shift trajectories. We also show that owing to the long-range astrometric effect of third bodies, the detection efficiency will be considerable even for third bodies with large separations from their close lens pairs.  相似文献

Astrometric observations of microlensing events can be used to obtain important information about lenses. During these events, the shift of the position of the multiple image centroid with respect to the source star location can be measured. This effect, which is expected to occur on scales from micro-arcseconds to milli-arcseconds, depends on the lens-source-observer system physical parameters. Here, we consider the astrometric and photometric observations by space and ground-based telescopes of microlensing events towards the Galactic bulge caused by free floating planets (FFPs). We show that the efficiency of astrometric signal on photometrically detected microlensing events tends to increase for higher FFP masses in our Galaxy. In addition, we estimate that during five years of the Gaia observations, about a dozen of microlensing events caused by FFPs are expected to be detectable.  相似文献

We consider the motion of the image of a distant radiation source microlensed by one and many point masses in the presence of an external background field, which produces a shear in the lens equation. The trajectories of the image brightness centroid (BC) in a Chang-Refsdal lens are very sensitive to the magnitude of the shear and to the direction of motion of the microlenses, allowing these parameters to be unambiguously determined from the BC motion. Stochastic motions of the BC for an extended source are simulated in a problem with a large number of randomly arranged microlenses. We derive dependences of the root-mean-square variations in BC velocity on microlense density, on external shear, and on the continuous component of the mass density, which may be related to dark matter in extragalactic lenses.  相似文献

Extended source size effects have been detected in photometric monitoring of gravitational microlensing events. We study similar effects in the centroid motion of an extended source lensed by a point mass. We show that the centroid motion of a source with uniform surface brightness can be obtained analytically. For a source with a circularly symmetric limb-darkening profile, the centroid motion can be expressed as a one-dimensional integral, which can be evaluated numerically. We find that when the impact parameter is comparable to the source radius, the centroid motion is significantly modified by the finite source size. In particular, when the impact parameter is smaller than the source radius, the trajectories become clover-leaf like. Such astrometric motions can be detected using space interferometers such as the Space Interferometry Mission . Such measurements offer exciting possibilities for determining stellar parameters, such as stellar radius, to excellent accuracy.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the colour changes of gravitational microlensing events caused by the two different mechanisms of differential amplification for a limb-darkened extended source and blending. From this investigation, we find that the colour changes of limb-darkened extended source events (colour curves) have dramatically different characteristics depending on whether the lens transits the source star or not. We show that for a source transit event, the lens proper motion can be determined by simply measuring the turning time of the colour curve instead of fitting the overall colour or light curves. We also find that even for a very small fraction of blended light, the colour changes induced by blending are equivalent to those induced by limb darkening, causing serious distortion in the observed colour curve. Therefore, to obtain useful information about the lens and source star from the colour curve of an event, it will be essential to correct for blending. We discuss various methods of blending correction .  相似文献

We discuss the classic theorem according to which a gravitational lens always produces at least one image with a magnification greater than unity. This theorem seems to contradict the conservation of total flux from a lensed source. The standard solution to this paradox is based on the exact definition of the reference 'unlensed' situation, in which the lens mass can be either removed or smoothly redistributed.
We calculate magnifications and amplifications (in photon number and energy flux density) for general lensing scenarios not limited to regions close to the optical axis. In this way the formalism is naturally extended from tangential planes for the source and lensed images to complete spheres. We derive the lensing potential theory on the sphere and find that the Poisson equation is modified by an additional source term that is related to the mean density and to the Newtonian potential at the positions of observer and source. This new term generally reduces the magnification, to below unity far from the optical axis, and ensures conservation of the total photon number received on a sphere around the source.
This discussion does not affect the validity of the focusing theorem , in which the unlensed situation is defined to have an unchanged affine distance between source and observer. The focusing theorem does not contradict flux conservation, because the mean total magnification (or amplification) directly corresponds to different areas of the source (or observer) sphere in the lensed and unlensed situation. We argue that a constant affine distance does not define an astronomically meaningful reference.
By exchanging source and observer, we confirm that magnification and amplification differ according to Etherington's reciprocity law, so that surface brightness is no longer strictly conserved. At this level we also have to distinguish between different surface brightness definitions that are based on photon number, photon flux and energy flux.  相似文献

Detecting colour changes of a gravitational microlensing event induced by the limb-darkened extended source effect is important for obtaining useful information about both the lens and the source star. However, precise measurements of the colour changes are hampered by blending, which also causes colour changes of the event. In this paper, we show that although the colour change measured from the subtracted image by using the recently developed photometric method of the 'difference image analysis' (DIA) differs from the colour change measured by using the conventional method based on the extraction of the individual source stars' point spread functions, the curve of the colour changes (colour curve) constructed by using the DIA method enables one to obtain the same information about the lens and source star, but with significantly reduced uncertainties due to the absence of blending. We investigate the patterns of the DIA colour curves for both single lens and binary lens events by constructing colour change maps.  相似文献

Despite the same multiplicity of lenses and sources, the frequency of detection of binary source events is relatively very low compared with that of binary lens events. Dominik pointed out that the rarity of binary source events is caused mainly by the large difference in amplification between the component stars. In this paper, we determine that the fraction of events with similar source star amplifications is as large as ∼8 per cent, and thus show that the very low detection rate for binary source events cannot be explained by this effect alone. By carrying out realistic simulations of binary source events, we find that a significant number of binary source events are additionally missed from detection for various other reasons. First, if the flux ratio between the component stars is very large, the light curve of the bright star is hardly affected by the light from the faint star. Secondly, if the separation is too small, the binary source stars behave like a single star, making it difficult to separate the binary source event from a single source event. Finally, although the probability of detecting binary source events increases as the source separation increases, some fraction of binary source events will still be missed because the light curves of these events will mimic those of single source events with longer time-scales and larger values of the impact parameter.  相似文献

We consider small-scale spheroidal clusters of weakly interacting massive particles in our Galaxy as non-compact gravitational microlenses and predict the appearance of caustics in the plane of a lensed source. The crossing of these caustics by a lensed star can produce a large variety of light curves, including some observed in actual microlensing events that have been interpreted as manifestations of binary gravitational lenses. We consider also observable effects during the gravitational microlensing of stars of non-zero angular size with a given brightness distribution across their disks by such an exotic objects as natural wormholes and objects whose space-time environment is described with the NUT metric. We demonstrate that, under certain conditions, the microlensing light curves, chromatic and polarizational effects due to the properties of the lens and the star disk brightness distributions can differ considerably from those observed for a Schwarzschild gravitational lens, so that their analysis can facilitate the identification of such objects.  相似文献

Recent observations of brightness variations on the Sun during the solar cycle have motivated us to re-examine the widely held view that cool, dark starspots, covering a significant fraction of the star, are the centers of magnetic activity on BY Dra stars. We propose that the magnetic regions are better described by a bright facular network, and that the dark areas which give rise to photometric rotational modulation are actually regions where the underlying quiet photosphere is seen. This interpretation is consistent with recent observations of late-type stars that show that bright areas covering much of the star have magnetic fields with strengths of several thousand gauss. It resolves several problems with the current model, including the size, location, and stability of the starspots required to match photometric and Doppler-imaging observations. It also has interesting observational implications for the correlation of photometric rotational modulation and long term brightness variations with other surface activity, and for the positions of magnetically active stars in the H-R diagram.Hubble Fellow.  相似文献

The availability of a robust and efficient routine for calculating light curves of a finite source magnified due to bending of its light by the gravitational field of an intervening binary lens is essential for determining the characteristics of planets in such microlensing events, as well as for modelling stellar lens binaries and resolving the brightness profile of the source star. However, the presence of extended caustics, and the fact that the images of the source star cannot be determined analytically while their number depends on the source position (relative to the lens system), makes such a task difficult in general. Combining the advantages of several earlier approaches, an adaptive contouring algorithm is presented, which only relies on a small number of simple rules and operations on the adaptive search grid. By using the parametric representation of critical curves and caustics found by Erdl & Schneider, seed solutions to the adaptive grid are found, which ensures that no images or holes are missed.  相似文献

Machine learning has achieved great success in many areas today. The lifting algorithm has a strong ability to adapt to various scenarios with a high accuracy, and has played a great role in many fields. But in astronomy, the application of lifting algorithms is still rare. In response to the low classification accuracy of the dark star/galaxy source set in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), a new research result of machine learning, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), has been introduced. The complete photometric data set is obtained from the SDSS-DR7, and divided into a bright source set and a dark source set according to the star magnitude. Firstly, the ten-fold cross-validation method is used for the bright source set and the dark source set respectively, and the XGBoost algorithm is used to establish the star/galaxy classification model. Then, the grid search and other methods are used to adjust the XGBoost parameters. Finally, based on the galaxy classification accuracy and other indicators, the classification results are analyzed, by comparing with the models of function tree (FT), Adaptive boosting (Adaboost), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Stacked Denoising AutoEncoders (SDAE), and Deep Belief Nets (DBN). The experimental results show that, the XGBoost improves the classification accuracy of galaxies in the dark source classification by nearly 10% as compared to the function tree algorithm, and improves the classification accuracy of sources with the darkest magnitudes in the dark source set by nearly 5% as compared to the function tree algorithm. Compared with other traditional machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks, the XGBoost also has different degrees of improvement.  相似文献

Interferometers from the ground and space will be able to resolve the two images in a microlensing event. This will at least partially lift the inherent degeneracy between physical parameters in microlensing events. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio, intrinsically bright events with large magnifications will be preferentially selected as targets. These events may be influenced by finite source size effects both photometrically and astrometrically. Using observed finite source size events as examples, we show that the fringe visibility can be affected by ∼5–10 per cent, and the closure phase by a few degrees – readily detectable by ground and space interferometers. Such detections will offer unique information about the lens–source trajectory relative to the baseline of the interferometers. Combined with photometric finite source size effects, interferometry offers a way to measure the angular sizes of the source and the Einstein radius accurately. Limb-darkening changes the visibility by a small amount compared with a source with uniform surface brightness, marginally detectable with ground-based instruments. We discuss the implications of our results for the plans to make interferometric observations of future microlensing events.  相似文献

With this paper we present the mathematical background for a novel method for the deconvolution of longer exposed double star images, merged by seeing and other effects. This method, which was recently presentcd in a short paper (Müller and Geyer 1993) makes use of the autocorrelation of the odd function of the merged, and thus asymmetric two dimensional double star image profile. We give the mathematical evidence that digital filtering during the image processing does not influence the angular distance of the binary components, and that it can be determined independently of the brightness difference of the components. The brightness difference itself can be obtained without ambiguity, if it does not exceed 3 mag, and then the distance has been derived before. We further show that the information content of stellar images is generally less degraded by seeing effects as was previously supposed. Thus closer double stars can be resolved and photometrically deconvoluted by the method. By atmospheric disturbances, telescope guiding errors, optical distortions and silhouetting generally the stellar images on astrometric photographs of modern opto—electronic detectors are asymmetrically deformed. Therefore, the method yields also better accuracy and more adequate results for astrometry, photometry, and also astropspectroscopy.  相似文献

On the base of CCD-observations made with the axial meridian circle of the Nikolaev Observatory from 2008 to 2009, we compiled a catalogue for astrometric positions and proper motions for 140321 stars located in an ecliptic zone and around high proper motion stars. The root-meansquare error for a star position is 20–65 mas in right ascension and 30–70 mas in declination. The UCAC2 catalogue is used as a reference for astrometric reductions. To derive stars’ proper motion and to estimate systematic errors of the compiled catalogue, cross-identification of the obtained data with modern astronomic catalogues Tycho2, 2MASS, CMC14, LSPM, PPMX, USNO-A2, and XPM-1.0 is performed. In addition to star position and proper motion, our catalogue contains photometric values B, V, r’, J, H, and K taken from other catalogues.  相似文献

The known FU Ori-type young eruptive stars are exceedingly rare (a dozen or so confirmed objects) and 2MASS J06593158-0405277, with its 2014 outburst, is likely the latest addition to the family. All members have displayed just one such eruption in their recorded history, an event lasting for decades. To test the FU Ori nature of 2MASS J06593158-0405277, we have reconstructed its photometric history by measuring its brightness on Harvard photographic plates spanning the time interval 1899–1989. No previous large amplitude eruption similar to that initiated in 2014 has been found, as in bona fide FU Ori-type objects. The median value of the brightness in quiescence of 2MASS J06593158-0405277 is B = 15.5, with the time interval 1935–1950 characterized by a large variability ( ∼ 1 mag amplitude) that contrasts with the remarkable photometric stability displayed at later epochs. The variability during 1935–1950 can either be ascribed to some T Tau like activity of 2MASS J06593158-0405277 itself or to the also young and fainter star 2MASS J06593168-0405224 that lies 5 arcsec to the North and forms an unresolved pair at the astrometric scale of Harvard photographic plates.  相似文献
