Luminosity and Initial Mass Functions (IMF) are determined for a sample of six Magellanic Cloud (MC) star clusters. The program objects span a large range in age (10 Myr to 2.5 Gyr), and include the possibly very metal-poor cluster NGC 330 in the SMC. The procedures involved in deriving the luminosity and mass functions are very briefly described. They key result is that the IMFs of all six clusters are consistent with a single IMF slope ofx=2.5, where the Salpeter value is 1.35. This result does not depend on the passband or on the detailed stellar evolution models that are used. A comparison is described between the present results and the few previous and ongoing studies of mass functions of MC clusters. Taken at face value, this comparison suggests that the IMF slopes of MC clusters vary over a wide range, and no apparent correlation with this slope and any global cluster properties are evident. A further comparison with results for galactic clusters (both open and globular) does not clarify the problem. Microwave burst spectra are compared with the position, within the active region, of their associated flares observed in H. The National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) are planning to buld two 8 m telescopes, one for Mauna Kea, Hawaii, the other for a site in Chile. Optical configurations, primary mirror systems, and the telescope mounting are discussed. A new optical testing method is outlined. The system imaging goal is 0.25 FWHM. It is thought that the large-scale solar-cycle magnetic field is generated in a thin region at the interface of the radiative core (RC) and solar convection zone (SCZ). We show that the bulk of the SCZ virogoursly generates a small-scale turbulent magnetic field. Rotation, while not essential, increases the generation rate of this field.Thus, fully convective stars should have significant turbulent magnetic fields generated in their lower convection zones. In these stars the absence of a radiative core, i.e., the absence of a region of weak buoyancy, precludes the generation of a large-scale magnetic field, and as a consequence the angular momentum loss is reduced. This is, in our opinion, the explanation for the rapid rotation of the M-dwarfs in the Hyades cluster.Adopting the Utrecht's group terminology, we argue that the residual chromospheric emission should have three distinctive components: the basal emission, the emission due to the large-scale field, and the emission due to the turbulent field, with the last component being particularly strong for low mass stars.In the conventional dynamo equations, the dynamo frequencies and the propagation of the dynamo wave towards the equator are based on the highly questionable assumption of a constant . Furthermore, meridional motions, a necessary consequence of the interaction of rotation with convection, are ignored. In this context we discuss Stenflo's results about the global wave pattern decomposition of the solar magnetic field and conclude that it cannot be interpreted in the framework of the conventional dynamo equations.We discuss solar dynamo theories and argue that the surface layers could be essential for the generation of the poloidal field. If this is the case an -effect would not be needed at the RC-SCZ interface (where the toroidal field is generated). A systematic study of the internal horizontal (line-of-sight) motions of quiescent prominences which were observed at the limb has been made by using fourier techniques to analyse the shift of the Ca ii K line as a function of height above the limb. The results indicate that a characteristic size for the velocity elements is present in 70% of the 13 prominences studied. This size of 4700 km is attributed to Alfvén waves induced by horizontal convective motions in the photosphere as previously suggested by Malville. The spatial distribution of rift zones of Venus, their topographic configuration, morphometric parameters, and the type of volcanism associating with rifts were analyzed. This allowed the main characteristic features of rifts to be revealed and two different types of rift-forming structures, serving for classification of rift zones as rift valleys and graben belts, to be isolated. These structural types (facies) of rift zones are differently expressed in the relief: rift valleys are individual deep (several kilometers) W-shaped canyons, while graben belts are clusters of multiple V-shaped and rather shallow (hundreds of meters) depressions. Graben belts are longer and wider, as compared to rift valleys. Rift valleys are spatially associated with dome-shaped volcanic rises and large volcanos (concentrated volcanic sources), while graben belts do not exhibit such associations. Volcanic activity in the graben belts are presented by spacious lava fields with no apparent sources of volcanism. Graben belts and rift valleys were formed during the Atlian Period of geologic history of Venus, and they characterized the tectonic style of the planet at the late stages of its geologic evolution. Formation of this or that structural facies of the rift zones of Venus were probably governed by the thickness of the lithosphere, its rheological properties, and the development degree of the mantle diapirs associating with rift zones.  相似文献

MUSICOS (for MUlti-SIte COntinuous Spectroscopy) is an international project to facilitate and organize world-wide multi-site campaigns in high resolution spectroscopy, in view of obtaining a complete time coverage of various types of variable stellar phenomena.In the framework of this project a vast spectroscopic campaign was organized in December 1992, involving 8 sites well distributed in longitude around the Earth. The observations concerned three scientific programs, among which was the study of azimuthal structures in the wind and chromosphere of the pre-Main-Sequence Herbig Ae star AB Aur.The Hei 5876 line of AB Aur, which is formed in the expanding chromosphere of this star, in the innermost parts of its wind, was monitored at a resolution of 30000, nearly continuously for about 4 days. A spectacular variability of this line was discovered, the profile changing from pure emission to a composite profile including a deep absorption component in the course of a few hours. Observations of quiescent prominences with the Zeiss Universal Birefringent Filter at Sacramento Peak show short-lived brightenings and velocity transients in H and D3. The larger events range in area from 25 to 170 square arc sec, have lifetimes of approximately 30 min, velocities of 30 km s–1, and total energy excesses up to 7 × 1027 ergs. Heights of formation of lines that do not exhibit Zeeman splitting are calculated using an LTE, partial non-LTE, and full non-LTE approach. Non-magnetic (g=0) lines are valuable for velocity investigations in quiet-Sun magnetic field regions, and a knowledge of their formation heights is useful for obtaining three dimensional velocity profiles in these regions. We compare the observed center-to-limb distribution of 86 white-light flares (WLFs) with calculated distributions derived from five flare models, each covering different heights, temperatures, and densities in the solar atmosphere. Considering the limited statistics and the possibility of selection effects in reporting WLFs, the following results may be considered tentative: (1) WLFs cannot be modeledsolely by high-altitude optically thin sources, by optically thin chromospheric sources, or by photospheric sources located less than 150 km above the 5000 = 1 level; (2) middle photospheric sources extending somewhat higher than 150 km provide the best fit to the observed center-to-limb distribution, and (3) middle photospheric sources not exceeding 150 km altitude combined with chromospheric or higher-altitude sources are acceptable. An important feature of this work is that the methods used in the analysis are entirely independent of spectral analysis; yet spectral analysis has provided evidence for both photospheric and chromospheric components in WLFs.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. Measurements of lithium in stars of different galactic populations such as young open clusters ( Per, Pleiades, Praesepe, Coma, Hyades), very young stellar associations (Taurus-Auriga, Chamaeleon, Ophiuchus clouds), intermediate and old open clusters (NGC 752, M 67, NGC 188), old disc stars and halo stars give us the observational framework from which the galactic evolution of lithium has to be inferred. This element is produced mainly via three mechanisms: primordial nucleosynthesis, spallation reactions in the interstellar medium and thermonuclear reactions in some particular stellar evolutionary stages (novae, red giants). The complicated nucleosynthesis and the fact that astration of lithium in stars is not well understood, makes a direct interpretation of the lithium evolutionary abundance curve difficult. The constraints set by recent lithium measurements in very old open clusters and metal-deficient stars on galactic lithium production mechanisms are discussed. Current problems in the determination of the primordial lithium abundance are briefly reviewed.  相似文献

On 11 September 1973 a peculiar prominence was observed. The prominence displayed strong ( 50km s–1) systematic motions toward and away from the observer. UBV light curves obtained in 1975 for both components of ADS 9537 are presented. These light curves and the light curve of BV Dra by Yamasaki have been solved for geometrical parameters using the synthesis method under two hypotheses explaining theW-subclass light curves: (1) temperature excess of the less massive components; (2) spots on the more massive components; the results are very similar. Because of the poor determinacy of the solutions, mass-ratios have been assumed:q=0.8 for BV Dra and a range inq for BW Dra; our solutions suggest preference for smallerq in the latter system. We compare both variables and conclude that they follow the Main Sequence dependences. We give also a bried discussion of the existing information on other contact binaries in multiple (visual) systems: the contact binaries seem to follow the same statistical distributions for occurrence in multiples as found for detached binaries but severe selection effects limit detectability for multiple systems with wide orbits having semi-axes below 100 a.u.On leave from the Warsaw University Observatory.Visiting Astronomer, Kitt Peak National Observatory which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The Kitt Peak multi-channel magnetograph was used to make raster scans of the super-granulation. The region scanned was carefully selected to be quiet and was located at the center of the disk. Each point in the raster was observed twice (with a time interval of 150 sec) and averaged, thereby cancelling out effects of the 5 min oscillations. Subsequent raster scans were made over a period of 4 h and averaged, further reducing short-lived, nonperiodic modes and enhancing the long-lived super-granulation.The results clearly show vertical supergranular motions. These motions consist of relatively isolated patches of downward flowing material, or downdrafts, with a speed of approximately 0.1 km/sec. These downdrafts are highly correlated with patches of magnetic field, being not only cospatial with them but also approximately linearly proportional to the field strength. The magnetic field strength of these downdrafts is in the range from 50 to 100 G. These downdrafts are also regions of increased temperature (i.e., brighter than average) at all levels observed, from the Caii K line down to the level of the continuum.The observations show no contradiction with the hypothesis that the supergranulation is a convective phenomenon, but they do indicate that the convection would be far more complicated than previously supposed. In some quiescent prominences, areas are found where the H emission profiles are centrally reversed. By combining good spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution, the detailed behavior of these reversal regions has been investigated. Many of the regions show a growth and subsequent decay in the affected area, peak intensity, line width, and depth of the central reversal. Lifetimes of the time-varying reversal features range from 10 to more than 60 min, and they are found near the edges of the prominence fine structure. These events are similar to the impulsive events that the authors discussed in an earlier paper, and may share a common cause. The detailed behavior of the H line profiles is consistent with these reversal features being true self-reversal of the line, indicating unusually high column masses in these areas. Some models of condensation of coronal material to the prominence state predict temporary regions of high density, perhaps high enough to produce the observed reversal. Preliminary results of magnetic field measurements in small sunspots from spectrograms obtained with the aid of the McMath Solar Telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory are presented. The measured intensities are greater than or equal to about 1200 Gauss. Furthermore, a broadening of the Fei line 6302.508 Å was found in some places of intergranular space.
