We examine the H I kinematics of the “Bluedisk” ensemble of 48 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and observed in H I with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The sample consists of 25 galaxies with a high H I mass fraction and a comparatively large control sample comprising 23 galaxies of comparable stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, redshift, and inclination. By studying the H I velocity fields of these galaxies, we investigate whether there are signatures of ongoing gas accretion: i.e. global asymmetries and indications for warping and kinematical lopsidedness. We find no enhanced kinematical asymmetries between the H I‐rich sample and the control sample galaxies, indicating no significant difference in kinematical signatures such as warping and lopsidedness. Furthermore, we find no difference in position angle and systemic velocity offset with respect to the optical between both sub‐samples. We therefore do not find compelling evidence for enhanced global asymmetry of the H I‐excess galaxies ensemble properties in comparison to the control sample galaxies. We present deep, multi-Very Large Array configuration radio images for a set of 18 quasars, having redshifts between 0.36 and 2.5, from the 7C quasar survey. Approximately one quarter of these quasars have Fanaroff–Riley type I (FR I) type twin-jet structures and the remainder are a broad range of wide angle tail, fat double, classical double, core-jet and hybrid sources. These images demonstrate that FR I quasars are prevalent in the Universe, rather than non-existent as had been suggested in the literature prior to the serendipitous discovery of the first FR I quasar a few years ago, the optically powerful 'radio-quiet' quasar E 1821+643.
Some of the FR I quasars have radio luminosities exceeding the traditional FR I/FR II break luminosity; however, we find no evidence for FR II quasars with luminosities significantly below the break. We consider whether the existence of such high-luminosity FR I structures is due to the increasingly inhomogeneous environments in the higher redshift Universe.  相似文献

Giant gaseous layers(termed “superdisks”) have been hypothesized in the past to account for the strip-like radio emission gap(or straight-edged central brightness depression) observed between twin radio lobes, in over a dozen relatively nearby powerful Fanaroff-Riley Class II radio galaxies. They could also provide a plausible alternative explanation for a range of observations. Although a number of explanations have been proposed for the origin of the superdisks, little is known about their material content. Some X-ray observations of superdisk candidates indicate the presence of hot gas, but a cool dusty medium also seems to be common. If they are entirely or partly composed of neutral gas, then it may be directly detectable and we report here a first attempt to detect/image any neutral hydrogen gas present in the superdisks that are inferred to be present in four nearby radio galaxies. We have not found a positive H I signal in any of the four sources, resulting in tight upper limits on the H I number density in the postulated superdisks, estimated directly from the central rms noise values of the final radio continuum subtracted image. The estimated ranges of the upper limit on neutral hydrogen number density and column density are 10^-4-10^-3 atoms per cm3 and 10^19-10^20 atoms per cm^2, respectively. No positive H I signal is detected even after combining all the four available H I images(with inverse variance weighting). This clearly rules out an H I dominated superdisk as a viable model to explain these structures, however, the possibility of a superdisk being composed of warm/hot gas still remains open.  相似文献

I had the privilege, many years ago, to be supervised by Alfonso Cavaliere in my Master thesis work. I remember the great patience and enthusiasm with which, in a warm summer day, he presented to me a score of exciting astrophysical problems. We finally determined to study the relationship of QSOs and BL Lacs—then considered rather exotic object—with normal galaxies. In the years I have continued on this line of research, reacting far too slowly to the wealth of new ideas that Alfonso has been continuously injecting in our conversations. As examples I will report two recent results on the chemical abundances of QSO host galaxies and on the space density of high-z QSOs, which are closely related to our shared interest on AGN.  相似文献

With the goal of identifying high-redshift radio galaxies with Fanaroff–Riley class I (FR I) classification, here are presented high-resolution, wide-field radio observations, near-infrared and optical imaging and multi-object spectroscopy of two fields of the Leiden–Berkeley Deep Survey. These fields, Hercules.1 and Lynx.2, contain a complete sample of 81 radio sources with   S 1.4 GHz > 0.5 mJy  within 0.6 deg2. This sample will form the basis for a study of the population and cosmic evolution of high-redshift, low-power, FR I radio sources which will be presented in Paper II. Currently, the host galaxy identification fraction is 86 per cent with 11 sources remaining unidentified at a level of   r '≥ 25.2 mag  (Hercules; four sources) or   r '≥ 24.4 mag  (Lynx; seven sources) or   K ≳ 20 mag  . Spectroscopic redshifts have been determined for 49 per cent of the sample and photometric redshift estimates are presented for the remainder of the sample.  相似文献

With the launch of XMM‐Newton in 1999, two Narrow‐Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) have been detected (IRAS 13224–3809 and 1H 0707–495) showing sharp spectral drops at energies equal or above the neutral Fe K edge at 7.1 keV without any narrow Fe K reemission. In this paper I summarize our present knowledge on the observed properties of sharp high‐energy spectral drops. I list the problems presently arising from the reflection dominated and the optically thick disc models. Finally, I present an alternative solution which consists of a combination of the accretion disc model and the reflection dominated model. This might solve the problems of the standard accretion disc model. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We consider archival ROSAT and Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) observations of five FR I radio galaxies and isolate their nuclear emission from that of the host galaxy. This enables us to determine the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of their nuclei spanning the region from the radio to the X-ray band. They cannot be described as single power laws, but require the presence of an emission peak located between the infrared (IR) and soft X-ray band. We found consistency between the SED peak position and the values of the broad-band spectral indices of radio galaxies compared with those of BL Lacs, once the effects of beaming are properly taken into account. FR I SEDs are thus qualitatively similar to those of BL Lacs, supporting the identification of FR I sources as their misoriented counterparts. No dependence of the shape of the SED on the FR I orientation is found.  相似文献

Quasar evolution
I present a critical review of recent progress in the field of quasar evolution, concentrating on the methodical issues of constructing and analysing observed quasar samples. In particular, I attempt to trace the origins and shortcomings of the popular concept of ‘pure luminosity evolution’ that has dominated the discussion over the last decade. I discuss results from new surveys showing that this notion should be abandoned, and that quasar evolution is more complex than previously thought.  相似文献

Data from the H I Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) of the southern sky in the neutral hydrogen line are used to determine the radial velocities and widths of the H I line for flat spiral galaxies of the Revised Flat-Galaxy Catalog (RFGC) seen edge-on. The sample of 103 flat galaxies detected in HIPASS is characterized by a median radial velocity of +2037 km/sec and a median width of the H I line at the level of 50% of maximum of 242 km/sec. For RFGC galaxies the 50% detection level in HIPASS corresponds to an apparent magnitude B t = 14 m .5 or an angular diameter a = 2.9. The relative number of detected galaxies increases from 2% for the morphological types Sbc and Sc to 41% for the type Sm. The median value of the ratio of hydrogen mass to total mass for RFGC galaxies is 0.079. With allowance for the average internal extinction for edge-on galaxies, <B t< = 0 m .75, the median ratio of hydrogen mass to luminosity, M H I/L B = 0.74 M /L , is typical for late-type spirals. Because of its small depth, HIPASS reveals only a few RFGC galaxies with previously unknown velocities and line widths.  相似文献

We present radio observations made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to study the jets and lobes of three Fanaroff–Riley class I (FR I) radio galaxies: PKS B1234−723, 1452−517 and B2148−555. The total intensity and polarization radio images of the FR I jets are used to determine jet brightness and width variations, magnetic field structure and fractional polarization. The equipartition pressure is determined as a function of distance from the galaxies to probe the intergalactic medium.  相似文献

I present a method to deproject the observed intensity profile of an axisymmetric bulge with arbitrary flattening to derive the three-dimensional luminosity density profile, and to calculate the contribution of the bulge to the rotation curve. I show the rotation curves for a family of fiducial bulges with Sérsic surface brightness profiles and with various concentrations and intrinsic axis ratios. Both parameters have a profound impact on the shape of the rotation curve. In particular, I show how the peak rotation velocity, as well as the radius where it is reached, depends on both parameters.
I also discuss the implications of the flattening of a bulge for the decomposition of a rotation curve and use the case of NGC 5533 to show the errors that result from neglecting it. For NGC 5533, neglecting the flattening of the bulge leads to an overestimate of its mass-to-light ratio by approximately 30 per cent and an underestimate of the contributions from the stellar disc and dark matter halo in the regions outside the bulge-dominated area.  相似文献

I present 1.5- and 8.4-GHz observations with all configurations of the NRAO VLA of the wide-angle tail source 3C 130. The source has a pair of relatively symmetrical, well-collimated inner jets, one of which terminates in a compact hotspot. Archival ROSAT PSPC data confirm that the environment of 3C 130 is a luminous cluster with little sign of sub-structure in the X-ray-emitting plasma. I compare the source to other wide-angle tail objects and discuss the properties of the class as a whole. None of the currently popular models is entirely satisfactory in accounting for the disruption of the jets in 3C 130.  相似文献

Over the past several years, the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) has acquired many broad-band images of various regions in the M31 disc. I have obtained 27 such fields from the HST data archive in order to produce colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the stellar populations contained within these areas of the disc. I have attempted to reproduce these CMDs using theoretical stellar evolution models in conjunction with statistical tools for determining the star formation history that best fits the observations. The wide range of extinction values within any given field makes the data difficult to reproduce accurately; nevertheless, I have managed to find star formation histories that roughly reproduce the data. These statistically determined star formation histories reveal that, like the disc of the Galaxy, the disc of M31 contains very few old metal-poor stars. The histories also suggest that the star formation rate of the disc as a whole has been low over the past ∼1 Gyr.  相似文献

Nearby luminous galaxies serve as templates to gain insight into the building blocks of the most luminous galaxies in the distant universe. In this conference I have shown that the most luminous galaxies in the Local Universe are mergers of evolved gas-rich galaxies that radiate the bulk of their energy in the mid and far-infrared. The most important implication for future studies on the formation of galaxies at early cosmological timescales is that they will appear as luminous sub-millimeter sources. We present an analytical model for jets in Fanaroff & Riley Class I (FR I) radio galaxies, in which an initially laminar, relativistic flow is surrounded by a shear layer. We apply the appropriate conservation laws to constrain the jet parameters, starting the model where the radio emission is observed to brighten abruptly. We assume that the laminar flow fills the jet there and that pressure balance with the surroundings is maintained from that point outwards. Entrainment continuously injects new material into the jet and forms a shear layer, which contains material from both the environment and the laminar core. The shear layer expands rapidly with distance until finally the core disappears, and all of the material is mixed into the shear layer. Beyond this point, the shear layer expands in a cone and decelerates smoothly. We apply our model to the well-observed FR I source 3C 31 and show that there is a self-consistent solution. We derive the jet power, together with the variations of mass flux and entrainment rate with distance from the nucleus. The predicted variation of bulk velocity with distance in the outer parts of the jets is in good agreement with model fits to Very Large Array observations. Our prediction for the shape of the laminar core can be tested with higher-resolution imaging.  相似文献

Active galaxies
In this paper I will review, in an unavoidably incomplete and biased way, the main results obtained by XMM‐Newton on Active Galactic Nuclei. I will then highlight the major issues still open in which XMM‐Newton can still give important contributions, expecially if the observing programs will shift in the future towards more long exposures of single objects and observations of large samples. I will also argue in favour of a legacy program consisting of good S/N observations of a flux‐limited, sizeable sample of AGN. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

I review success and failure of the hierarchical galaxy formation model. In this scenario, the morphology of galaxies is regulated by the mode of gas accretion and intimately linked to discrete accretion events. Some of the common misconceptions about hierarchical clustering are discussed. The need of a self-consistent approach that incorporates the chemical and dynamical evolution on small scalessimultaneously with the cosmological framework of structure formation on large scales is emphasized. We use Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 μm near-infrared data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), optical B, V and I and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey K s-band data to produce mass surface density maps of M81. The IRAC 3.6- and 4.5-μm data, whilst dominated by emission from old stellar populations, are corrected for small-scale contamination by young stars and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission. The I -band data are used to produce a mass surface density map by a   B − V   colour correction, following the method of Bell and de Jong. We fit a bulge and exponential disc to each mass map, and subtract these components to reveal the non-axisymmetric mass surface density. From the residual mass maps, we are able to extract the amplitude and phase of the density wave, using azimuthal profiles. The response of the gas is observed via dust emission in the 8-μm IRAC band, allowing a comparison between the phase of the stellar density wave and gas shock. The relationship between this angular offset and radius suggests that the spiral structure is reasonably long-lived and allows the position of corotation to be determined.  相似文献

We present HST /WFPC2 observations of UGC 4483, an irregular galaxy in the M81/NGC 2403 complex. Stellar photometry was carried out with HSTphot, and is complete to V ≃26.0 and I ≃24.7. We measure the red giant branch tip at I =23.56±0.10, and calculate a distance modulus of μ 0=27.53±0.12 (corresponding to a distance of 3.2±0.2 Mpc), placing UGC 4483 within the NGC 2403 subgroup. We were able to measure properties of a previously known young star cluster in UGC 4483, finding integrated magnitudes of V =18.66±0.21 and I =18.54±0.10 for the stellar contribution (integrated light minus H α and [O  iii ] contribution), corresponding to an age of ∼10–15 Myr and an initial mass of ∼104 M. This is consistent with the properties of the cluster's brightest stars, which were resolved in the data for the first time. Finally, a numerical analysis of the galaxy's stellar content yields a roughly constant star formation rate of 1.3×10−3 M yr−1 and mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=−1.3 dex from 15 Gyr ago to the present.  相似文献
