Emplacement of the Fen central complex (603-565 Ma) within the Fennoscandian Shield in southeast Norway was preceded by the emplacement of numerous minor alkaline intrusions into the surrounding gneisses. A palaeomagnetic sample of 28 of these bodies has identified a predominant SSE negative remanence carried by magnetite in some bodies and hematite in others. A sporadic high blocking temperature component appears to record localised effects associated with the development of the Oslo rift and igneous province to the east, but no major magnetic overprinting by post-emplacement events is recognised. The stable magnetisation vectors for twenty sites comprise a coherent population with those for two sites reversed with respect to the remainder; they yield a mean direction ofD = 210°,I = 44° (95 = 6.4°) and a palaeomagnetic pole at 324°E, 50°S (dpdm=4.9°7.9°). The difference between the pole position for this early phase of the Fen magmatism and that for the late metasomatic rødberg (322°E, 63°S) in the interior of the complex is interpreted in terms of continental movement during the late Vendian-earliest Cambrian interval of alkaline activity here. The defined direction of APW movement continues a motion recognised from other Vendian data but subsequent movements during Lower Cambrian times are unclear.  相似文献

The Builth Volcanic Series of Llanvirnian age in Llanelwedd Quarries, mid-Wales, carries three components of natural remanent magnetisation. Component P, regarded as primary, is a thermochemical remanence directed at D = 181.7°, I = +54.5°, α95 = 4.4° relative to bedding. Component S is a secondary component with in situ D = 178.7°, I = ?6.7°, α95 = 5.4° and is believed to be a low-temperature chemical remanence (CRM) of Permo-Carboniferous age. Component R is directed close to the present geomagnetic field and is believed to be a recent viscous remanence (VRM).The results are of interest for three reasons. First, they are an unusually good example of multi-component NRM analysis, the three components being so clearly discriminated by thermal demagnetisation because they have almost completely separate blocking temperature ranges. Second, they provide evidence of a Permo-Carboniferous event (possibly a mild thermal or hydrothermal pulse promoting CRM acquisition) some 40 km north of the Hercynian orogenic front. Third, they illustrate very clearly the importance of detailed demagnetisation: this work revises the pole position for these rocks by ~ 10° and removes an obstacle to the palaeomagnetic recognition of the ~ 1000 km wide Iapetus Ocean cutting Britain in Ordovician time.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic investigation has been carried out at 13 sites of Jurassic age in the Iberian Range (northern Spain). Two components of remanent magnetisation have been found at each site. A primary high-temperature component shows an average counterclockwise rotation with respect to the north of 33±2° clockwise about a vertical axis corresponding to the absolute rotation of the Iberian plate since the Jurassic. A secondary low-temperature component shows a systematic declination difference of 16±4° with respect to the primary component. This indicates that a rotation of Iberia must have occurred between the two acquisition times. Comparison of the magnetisation directions with previous palaeomagnetic data and with sea-floor spreading data, constrains the age of the remagnetisation between 95 and 125 Ma. The remagnetisation may be associated with the extensional phases in the Iberian Basin in the Early Cretaceous (Barremian–early Albian) or Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian). A principal characteristic of the remagnetisation is its widespread character in the Iberian Range.  相似文献

Detailed alternating field demagnetisation of Upper Llandovery volcanics of the Mendip Hills and Gloucestershire has isolated remanence directions interpreted as primary from each of five sites. Well-defined high-coercivity secondary magnetisation is present in six samples of one site and low-coercivity secondary remanence is present in all samples from another site; the former component was apparently acquired in Permo-Triassic times. Primary directions of magnetisation show marked improvement in precision after correction for penecontemporaneous folding, and show a late Llandovery reversal in the sense R → N.The group mean directions of magnetisation isD = 243.5°,I = 47.5° (precision parameterk = 29). Petrographic examination confirms observations from magnetic properties that relict titanomagnetite (oxidation classes 3 to 5) is the remanence carrier in most samples. Hematite, probably mostly late magmatic in origin, is widely developed in all samples, but only the principal remanence carrier where it has thoroughly replaced the titanomagnetite. Low-coercivity remanence is apparently caused by weathering effects but there is no clear visible cause for secondary high-coercivity remanence carried by some samples. The mean virtual geomagnetic pole position is close to Upper Silurian/Lower Devonian pole positions from other parts of Britain and defines a minimum apparent polar shift of 60° between late Ordovician and Upper Llandovery times. Reference to absolute age dates suggests that this shift took place between ca. 447 and 434 m.y. followed by slight polar movement between ca. 434 and 394 m.y.  相似文献

We report new helium isotope results for 49 basalt glass samples from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 1°N and 47°S.3He/4He in South Atlantic mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) varies between 6.5 and 9.0 RA (RA is the atmospheric ratio of1.39 × 10−6), encompassing the range of previously reported values for MORB erupted away from high3He/4He hotspots such as Iceland. He, Sr and Pb isotopes show systematic relationships along the ridge axis. The ridge axis is segmented with respect to geochemical variations, and local spike-like anomalies in3He/4He, Pb and Sr isotopes, and trace element ratios such as(La/Sm)N are prevalent at the latitudes of the islands of St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha and Gough to the east of the ridge. The isotope systematics are consistent with injection beneath the ridge of mantle “blobs” enriched in radiogenic He, Pb and Sr, derived from off-axis hotspot sources. The variability in3He/4He along the ridge can be used to refine the hotspot source-migrating-ridge sink model.

MORB from the 2–7°S segment are systematically the least radiogenic samples found along the mid-ocean ridge system to date. Here the depleted mantle source is characterized by87Sr/86Sr of 0.7022, Pb isotopes close to the geochron and with206Pb/204Pb of 17.7, and3He/4He of 8.6–8.9 RA. The “background contamination” of the subridge mantle, by radiogenic helium derived from off-ridge hotspots, displays a maximum between 20 and 24°S. The HePb and HeSr isotope relations along the ridge indicate that the3He/4He ratios are lower for the hotspot sources of St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha and Gough than for the MORB source, consistent with direct measurements of3He/4He ratios in the island lavas. Details of the HeSrPb isotope systematics between 12 and 22°S are consistent with early, widespread dispersion of the St. Helena plume into the asthenosphere, probably during flattening of the plume head beneath the thick lithosphere prior to continental breakup. The geographical variation in theHe/Pbratio deduced from the isotope systematics suggests only minor degassing of the plume during this stage. Subsequently, it appears that the plume component reaching the mid-Atlantic ridge was partially outgassed of He during off-ridge hotspot volcanism and related melting activity.

Overall, the similar behavior of He and Pb isotopes along the ridge indicates that the respective mantle sources have evolved under conditions which produced related He and Pb isotope variations.  相似文献

Collections of Early Triassic rocks sampled from three outcrops on the SW slope of the Pai-Khoi Ridge are studied. The magnetic polarity succession r-n-r is established from the prefolding characteristic component of natural remanence in sedimentary rocks and a basaltic nappe. According to stratigraphic data and isotopic dating of the basaltic nappe, the studied parts of the lower subformation of the Lestanshorskaya Formation correlate with the central part of magnetic zone R 1 T 1 of the European Russia magnetostratigraphic time scale. The angles of rotation in the horizontal plane are estimated for the studied Early Triassic Pai-Khoi structures with respect to the East European platform.

The study area is situated along the Zolotica river in NW Russia, located within the Kola–Dvyna Rift System in the Baltic Shield that developed during Meso and Neoproterozoic times. A 9-m thick section made up of shallow marine sediments of Upper Ediacaran age was sampled in this locality. Two volcaniclastic levels from the middle part of the section yielded an age of 556 Ma. (U/Pb SHRIMP-II on zircons). Two magnetic components were successfully isolated, component A (Decl = 157.1, Incl = 68.0, 95 = 1.9°, N = 575 in situ) carried by magnetite and component B (Decl = 120.3, Incl = − 31.7, 95 = 3.9°, N = 57, bedding corrected), carried by haematite. While component A is thought to represent a younger overprint direction, the in situ direction for component B on the other hand, is dissimilar to any expected younger direction and is considered to be primary magnetisation in origin, acquired during or soon after deposition of the sediments in the Late Ediacaran. The corresponding palaeomagnetic pole for component A in situ is located at Lon = 55.4°E, Lat = 31°N, A95 = 2.7° and for component B at Lon = 110°E, Lat = 28.3°S, A95 = 3.8°, N = 57. Combined with other palaeomagnetic poles of the same tectonostratigraphic unit an alternative apparent polar wander path for the Late Proterozoic–Early Palaeozoic of Baltica is proposed. Such an alternative path shows that after the mid Cryogenian (750 Ma), the poles that were situated over South Africa (p.d.c.) moved to the east until they reached Australia during the Late Ediacaran (555 Ma) where they remained approximately stationary until the beginning of the Cambrian (545 Ma). Finally, they moved to the northwest until they reached the Arabian Peninsula in the Early Ordovician. Palaeolatitudes indicate that Baltica situated near the equator from the Cryogenian through to the Ediacaran moving gradually to the south at c. 1 cm/yr. During the Late Early Ediacaran, the plate suddenly began to drift northward at c. 8 cm/yr and in the boundary with the Cambrian it was positioned in low to intermediate latitudes. Finally, Baltica began to move back to the south at c. 13 cm/yr until in the Early Ordovician, reaching intermediate to high southern latitudes.  相似文献

Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic study has been conducted on the Early Triassic red beds of Liujiagou Formation from Jiaocheng, Shanxi Province. Hematite was shown as the main magnetic mineral. After eradicating an initial viscous component at room temperature to ~100°C–200°C, thermal demagnetization shows that most samples contain two remanence components, intermediate-temperature remanence component at 250°C–500°C and high-temperature component at 500°C–680°C. The intermediate-temperature component has a negative fold test at the 95% confidence level. And the pole position of the intermediate-temperature component in geographic coordinates is correlated with the Middle Jurassic reference pole of the North China Block (NCB) within the 95% confidence, suggesting that it might be a remagnetization component acquired during the Yanshanian period. The high-temperature component contains both reversal and normal polarities with positive fold test and C-level positive reversal test at the 95% confidence level, which suggests that this high-temperature component can be regarded as primary magnetization. Comparison of this newly obtained Early Triassic paleopole with the coeval mean pole of the Ordos Basin suggests that a locally relative rotation may have happened between the Ordos and the Jiaocheng area of Shanxi Province. This rotation may be related with two faults: one is Lishi big fault separating Ordos from Shanxi and the other is Jiaocheng big fault, which is situated in the southeast of sampling locality and was still in motion during the Cenozoic.  相似文献

The results of a palaeomagnetic investigation of a 27 m thick loess/palaeosol sequence in Viatovo (NE Bulgaria) are presented in this paper. The sequence consists of topsoil S0, seven loess horizons (L1–L7) and six interbedded palaeosols (S1–S6) overlying a red clay (terra rossa) complex. Magnetic viscosity experiments, IRM acquisition, AMS analysis and NRM stepwise alternating and thermal demagnetisation experiments of pilot samples were implemented for precise determination of the characteristic remanence and construction of a reliable magnetostratigraphical scheme. Analysis of IRM acquisition curves using the expectation – maximization algorithm of Heslop et al. [Heslop, D., Dekkers, M., Kruiver, P., van Oorschot, H., 2002. Analysis of isothermal remanent magnetization acquisition curves using the expectation – maximization algorithm. Geophys. J. Int., 148, 58–64] suggests that the best fitting is obtained by three coercivity components. Component 1 corresponds to SD maghemite/magnetite, while component 2 is probably related to the presence of oxidised detrital magnetites. The third component shows varying coercivities depending on the degree of pedogenic alteration of the samples and probably reflects the presence of detrital magnetite grains oxidised at different degree.

The relevance of the Viatovo section as a key representative sequence for the loess cover in the Danube basin is confirmed by the presence of geomagnetic polarity changes in the lower part of the sequence. The youngest one recorded in the seventh loess unit L7 can be identified as corresponding to the Matuyama/Brunhes palaeomagnetic polarity transition. Two normal magnetozones were found in the red clay complex, probably corresponding to the Jaramillo and Olduvai subchronozones of the Matuyama chron.  相似文献

Noble gas elemental and isotopic abundances have been analysed in eight samples of youthful basaltic glass dredged from three different locations within the Lau Backarc Basin: (1) the King's Triple Junction, (2) the Central Lau Spreading Centre at 18°S and (3) the Eastern Lau Spreading Centre at 19°S. Samples from the Lau central and eastern spreading centres have MORB-like helium isotopic ratios of approximately 1.2 × 10−5 (8.5 R/RA). In contrast, the samples from the King's Triple Junction yield helium isotopic ratios averaging 9.4 (±0.8) × 10−6 (6.7 ± 0.6 R/RA), systematically lower than the MORB-like value, which may be reflecting the addition of radiogenic 4He released from the descending slab. Neon isotopic ratios are enriched in 20Ne and 21Ne with respect to atmospheric ratios by as much as 23% and 62% respectively. These observations further confirm that non-atmospheric neon is a common characteristic of samples derived from the mantle. The helium and neon isotopic signatures in the samples can be explained by mixing of a primordial solar component, radiogenic and nucleogenic components produced by radioactive processes inside the Earth, and an atmospheric component. This reconnaissance survey of noble gases in a backarc basin indicates that current volcanism is dominated by magmas from the mantle wedge, a source similar to that from which MORBs are derived. The heavier noble gases (argon, krypton and xenon), however, show more atmosphere-like compositions, either indicating strong interaction of the magmas with the atmosphere or the presence of a recycled component derived from the underlying subducting slab.  相似文献

The intensity of natural remanence magnetisation (NRM) is measured along the three mutually-perpendicular directions using an astatic magnetometer. The intensity of induced magnetisation is measured using an apparatus fabricated in the laboratory. The Koenigsberger ratio has been calculated for all the samples and the ratio has been used to test the stability of NRM in the samples. The mean direction of magnetisation is determined from the three components of the NRM intensity. The palaeomagnetic pole position of the samples is determined using the direction of magnetisation and the site location. An attempt has been made to fix the geological age of the charnockites using palaeomagnetic methods.  相似文献

From a collection of 39 oriented hand-samples at 16 sites, total N.R.M. directions at 12 sites from the Elmina Sandstone (Devonian or possibly Carboniferous) of the Ghana coast fall in a group. Their in-situ mean (D = 334°, I = +1112°) is significantly divergent from the local geomagnetic field, and does not correlate with expected Palaeozoic remanence directions. A bedding-tilt test suggests that the magnetisation is secondary, and comparison with other African data suggests a Mesozoic (possibly Cretaceous) age. The remanence is only partially stable against thermal demagnetisation. The observations are consistent with a remanence originating at the time of faulting, tilting and uplift which marked the beginning of rifting of South America from Africa.  相似文献

A new paleomagnetic study has been carried out on sediments of middle Cambrian age in the North Sichuan Basin (Yangtze Block). Detailed stepwise thermal demagnetizations allowed us to isolate three components. Site-mean direction derived from higher temperature components is D/I=146.9°/–17.1° (95=8.3°) yielding a pole position at 51.3°S, 166.0°E. The fold and reversal tests suggest that remanence was acquired during early stage of sedimentation. Combined with the high-qualities early Sinian (748 Ma) and middle Silurian poles obtained recently from the Yangtze block, the deriving polar track demonstrates a similar loop to that of Australia. After rotating these poles from South China to fit that of Australia, the South China Block is placed against northwestern Australia. This reconstruction favors the correlations of the Jiangnan Grenville-age orogenic belt with the Rudall belt of western Australia, and subsequently the late Proterozoic Jiangnan and Officer/Adelaide rift systems. The paleobiogeographic evidence also indicates that this configuration might maintain by the middle Devonian.  相似文献

The components of the NRM in Middle Siwalik red beds are carried by two phases of hematite, a red pigment phase and a specular hematite phase. We present evidence in the form of a conglomerate test that the specularite phase carries a remanence acquired during or shortly after deposition. The red pigment, however, post-dates deposition, in many cases by at least one reversal boundary. This secondary component has a higher coercivity but a lower blocking temperature in these rocks and can therefore be selectively removed by thermal demagnetization to reveal a primary magnetization useful for magnetostratigraphic studies.  相似文献

Oolitic hematite-bearing ironstones of the Silurian Red Mountain Formation of Alabama are shown to carry a single-component remanence stable enough to have survived major folding (of probable Permian age). Nevertheless, the remanence direction (ten sites yielding a paleopole at 38.0°N, 132.4°E with dm = 3.6°, dp = 1.9°), its reverse polarity and a negative intraformational conglomerate test show that the remanence was very likely acquired during the Pennsylvanian—some 130 Ma after deposition. This remanence is likely a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) acquired during diagenesis induced by heating due to deep burial under a Pennsylvanian clastic wedge. Two possible mechanisms for acquisition of CRM during deep-burial diagenesis are considered. In hypothesis I, the oolitic hematite transformed from original geothite when heated to about 80°C, acquiring CRM. In hypothesis II, the oolitic hematite originated from ferrihydrite and was too fine-grained to acquire stable CRM until heat raised the solubility of hematite allowing grain growth. Hypothesis I explains the timing of remanence acquisition better, but there is some evidence that oolitic goethites may be stable to considerably more than 80°C. Hypothesis II has some difficulty explaining preliminary paleomagnetic results from oolitic hematite-bearing ironstones of the Silurian Clinton Group, New York State. We prefer hypothesis I but both hypotheses remain plausible. Both hypotheses warn that continental red beds may also acquire CRM during diagenesis induced by deep-burial heating, long after deposition but before folding.  相似文献

Summary Rock magnetism and magnetostratigraphy of the lower part of the Hadar Formation (Afar, Ethiopia) is presented after analysis of multiple new collection of samples from over 84 horizons. The Hadar Formation is composed of lacustrine, lake margin, fluvial and flood plain sediments and known for important Pliocene vertebrate faunas including Australopithecus afarensis. Hysteresis measurements, thermomagnetic analysis, growth and decay of isothermal remanent magnetisation are used to unravel the complex magnetic mineralogy of the different representative lithologies. Ferrimagnetic minerals of magnetite or titanomagnetite in composition, in the stable pseudo-single domain (PSD) size range are found to be the main carriers of the remanence. In most sites the characteristic remanence was isolated using stepwise thermal demagnetisation. The overall mean direction for about 72 horizons (434 samples) is D=358·6°, I=7° (k=17·9, α95=4°) implying some 14° of inclination shallowing, related to sediment compaction due to the very rapid sedimentation history of the site. Five successive polarity zones (N1-R1-N2-R2-N3) are identified and correlation with the lower Gauss chron of the astronomically calibrated geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) is proposed using the existing40Ar/39Ar ages. This implies the existence of a short normal polarity event (N2), identified on six different sites, within the reversed Mammoth subchron, called the Kada-Hadar event. The age calculated for the Kada-Hadar event, using linear interpolation of the dated horizons, assuming a constant rate of sedimentation is 3.246 Ma and its duration is about 8 kyr.  相似文献
