The electrical conductivity of the lunar interior has been determined from magnetic field step transients measured on the lunar dark side. The simplest model which best fits the data is a spherically symmetric three layer model having a nonconducting outer crust of radial thickness 0.03R moon; an intermediate layer of thicknessR0.37R moon, with electrical conductivity 1 3.5 × 10–4 mhos/m; and an inner core of radiusR 2 0.6R m with conductivity 2 10–2 mhos/m. Temperatures calculated from these conductivities in the three regions for an example of an olivine Moon are as follows: crust, < 440 K; intermediate layer, 890 K; and core, 1240 K. The whole-moon relative permeability has been calculated from the measurements to be/ 0 = 1.03 ± 0.13. Remanent magnetic fields at the landing sites are 38 ± 3 at Apollo 12, 43 ± 6 and 103 ± 5 at two Apollo 14 sites separated by 1.1 km, and 6 ± 4 at the Apollo 15 site. Measurements show that the 38 remanent field at the Apollo 12 site is compressed to 54 by a solar wind pressure increase of 7 × 10–8 dynes/cm2.National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate.  相似文献

The emission spectra and their time variations of gyro-synchrotron emission from an ensemble of energetic electrons are computed for some initial power-law distributions of the electron energies N()d= with =2 or 4. The spectra and decay curves of the emission are compared with solar microwave bursts in order to separately estimate the magnetic field H and . From a limited number of observations, we have 3 and H 103 gauss for the microwave impulsive bursts, and 2 and H (500–1000) gauss for the microwave type-IV bursts.  相似文献

The distribution of times t between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) CME catalog for the years 1996–2001 is examined. The distribution exhibits a power-law tail (t) with an index –2.36±0.11 for large waiting times (t>10 hours). The power-law index of the waiting-time distribution varies with the solar cycle: for the years 1996–1998 (a period of low activity), the power-law index is –1.86±0.14, and for the years 1999–2001 (a period of higher activity), the index is –2.98±0.20. The observed CME waiting-time distribution, and its variation with the cycle, may be understood in terms of CMEs occurring as a time-dependent Poisson process. The CME waiting-time distribution is compared with that for greater than C1 class solar flares in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) catalog for the same years. The flare and CME waiting-time distributions exhibit power-law tails with very similar indices and time variation.  相似文献

We study the effects of the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on the Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) anisotropy at solar minimum by using Global Network neutron monitor data. The hourly neutron monitor data for 1976 were averaged for the positive (+) and negative (–) IMF sectors (+ and – correspond to the antisolar and solar directions of magnetic field lines, respectively) and then processed by the global survey method. We found that the magnitude of the GCR anisotropy vector is larger in the positive IMF sector and that the phase shifts toward early hours. The derived GCR components A r, A , and A for the different + and – sectors are then used to calculate the angle ( 46°) between the IMF lines and the Sun–Earth line, the solar wind velocity U ( 420 km/s), the ratio of the perpendicular (K ) and parallel (K ||) diffusion coefficients K /K || = ( 0.33), and other parameters that characterize the GCR modulation in interplanetary space.  相似文献

On May 21/22, 1980 the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer aboard the SMM imaged an extensive coronal structure after the occurrence of a two-ribbon flare on May 21, 20:50 UT. The structure was observed from 22:20 UT on May 21 until its disappearence at 09:00 UT on May 22.At 22:20 UT the brightest pixel in the arch was located at a projected altitude of 95 000 km above the zero line of the longitudinal magnetic field. At 23:02 UT the maximum of brightness shifted to a neighbouring pixel with approximately the same projected altitude. This sudden shift indicates that the X-ray structure consisted of (at least) two separate arches at approximately the same altitude, one of which succeeded the other as the brightest arch in the structure at 23:02 UT.From 23:02 UT onwards the maximum of brightness did not change its position in the HXIS coarse field of view. With a spatial resolution of 32 this places an upper limit of 1.1 km s-1 on the rise velocity of the arch. Thus, contrary to a similar arch observed on November 6/7, where rise velocities of the order of 10 km s-1 were measured in the same phase of development, the May 22 arch was a stationary structure at an altitude of 145000 km.The following values were estimated for the physically relevant quantities of the May 21/22 arch at the time of its maximum brightness (23:00 UT): temperature T 6.3 × 106 K, electron density n e 1.1 × 109 cm-3, total emitting volume V 5 × 1029 cm3, energy density 2.9 erg cm–3, total energy contents E 1.4 × 1030 erg, total mass M 9 × 1014 g.The top of the arch was observed at 145 000 km altitude within 1.5 hr after the flare occurrence. Since it seems unlikely that the structure already existed prior to the flare at 20:50 UT, the arch must have risen to its stationary position with an average velocity exceeding 17 km s–1 (possibly much faster). We speculate that the arch was formed very fast at the flare onset, when (part of) the active region loop system was elevated within minutes to the observed altitude.  相似文献

Fourier analysis (DFT/CLEAN) of the international sunspot number (R) series since 1932 has revealed two long (250–500 days) and distinct episodes of solar activity exhibiting persistent 13 -day variations. The first episode lasts 500 days near the maximum of solar cycle 20, and the second, 250 days near the end of the current solar cycle 22. The solar radio flux density (F 10_7cm) series since 1947 has also been analyzed. During the first episode both solar indices exhibit distinct 27- and 13-day variations (the first report of 13-day variations in F 10_7cm). During the second episode neither index exhibits distinct 27-day variations and only R exhibits 13-day variations. Conditions affecting the appearance of 13-day variations in F 10_7cm are discussed.  相似文献

It is shown that a cylindrical plasma column supporting a longitudinal fieldB z and an azimuthal fieldB has a fastest-growing mode in whichkR 01 (k=wave number,R 0=radius of the column). If we assume that plasma is ejected from a galaxy to form a jet, filament or bridge of length 5 kpc,R 00.5 kpc, density 10–24 gm cm–3 with a dragged-out field of strengthB z 10–5 Gauss (from a parent field 10–6 Gauss), such a column must eventually fragment by the action of a hydromagnetic instability, breaking up into a number 10 of regularly-spaced condensations. It is, therefore, predicted that features like the M87 jet should show incipient nucleation with 3–10 knots, and that periodically-spaced objects of the type noted by Arp may have resulted from the action of such an instability.  相似文献

A model of 3He enrichments, which was proposed recently, is extended to study enhancements of heavy ions in high-energy particles. With weak currents parallel to the ambient magnetic field, oblique ion-acoustic waves and H cyclotron waves can become unstable. The former can have much greater growth rates at frequencies 3 He than at 4 He near the marginal states of instabilities. The latter can be unstable at 3 He for a wide region of plasma parameters. Thus they could cause 3He enrichments through cyclotron resonances. At the same time, these waves can resonate with first or higher harmonics of cyclotron frequencies of many other ions. We investigate these resonant ions for several cases of plasma temperature. This model predicts enhancements of heavy elements and of neutron-rich isotopes at T 10 MK. It shows heavy ion enhancements also at T 4 MK. Clear differences between these two temperatures, however, can be seen in charge states of ions. At T 2 MK, light ions as well as heavy ions can have cyclotron resonances with these waves, which suggests that such low temperatures are excluded.  相似文献

Very Large Array (VLA) observations of compact transient sources on the Sun at 2 cm wavelength are presented. These sources have angular sizes of 5–25, brightness temperatures of T B 1–3 × 105 K, and lifetimes ranging between a few minutes to several hours. The emission originates in regions of diffuse plage and quiet Sun, where the photospheric magnetic fields are relatively weak (H 100 G). In some cases the 2 cm radiation may be explained as the thermal bremsstrahlung of a dense (N e 1010 cm-3) plasma in the transition region. For other sources, the relatively high circular polarization ( c 40–50 %) suggests a nonthermal emission mechanism, such as the gyrosynchrotron radiation of mildly relativistic electron with a power-law spectrum.  相似文献

A central part of the GRB 790613 field is investigated, which contains about 1/3 of the area of 99% confidence of the GRB localization. Up to V 25 no blue optical counterparts were found. This can be interpreted as the absence in the field of single compact objects of the neutron star type as a possible potential source of -burst, up to a distance of 30 pc.  相似文献

We present the analysis of spectrograms obtained during quiescence and during an ordinary outburst of the SU UMa type dwarf nova WX Hyi (ESO 3.6m telescope, B&C spectrograph with Image Disector Scanner, 171 Åmm–1, range 4000–7000 Å, time resolution 6min.). The radial velocities of these spectra have been discussed by Schoembs and Vogt (1981) who also derived the orbital elements of WX Hyi. The phasesmax refer to these elements. All velocities discussed here are with respect to the white dwarf, not to the center of mass of the binary system.Inquiescent state we did not find significant radial velocity variations. The equivalent widths W of the He I emission lines revealed periodic variations with an amplitude of 30%, maximal values of W were observed atmax=0.0...0.2. In contrast, the equivalent widths of the Balmer lines were not variable.Duringoutburst we found periodic radial velocity variations of the emission peak of H, H and He I 5875 with an amplitude of100 km s–1,max0.5. Also the broad Balmer absorption lines revealed periodic radial velocity variations, with a similar amplitude (max=0.3...0.5). The equivalent width of the H central emission peak varies with an amplitude of30%,max0.85. No variations of the equivalent width of the Balmer absorption lines were found. The outburst observations suggest that the preceeding part of the disc is brighter than the following one (in orbital motion). This is probably due to heating of the preceeding part by collisions with circumbinary matter, which seems to have an enhanced density in outburst as compared to the quiescent state. The emission lines are formed in outer layers or in a halo around the disc. The equivalent width variations can be interpreted in terms of interactions between this halo and the optically thick part of the disc.A more detailed discussion of the data is being published elsewhere.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. We report the results of the first observations of solar coronal bright points at 6 cm wavelength using the Very Large Array (VLA), with a spatial resolution of 1.2. The maximum brightness temperature of the sources observed is 3 × 104 K with a mean value of 1 × 104 K (above the quiet Sun value). The lifetime of most sources is between 5 and 20 min. The average diameter of the sources is about 5–15 arc. The sources are gaussian-like near the footpoint of miniature loops and they appear in groups. The observations indicate that significant fluctuations in the brightness temperature (sometimes quasi-periodic) and in the spatial extents of these sources can occur over periods of a few minutes. On leave from Beijing Observatory, Beijing, Peoples Republic of China.  相似文献

Surface photometry is carried out for the photometric standard galaxy NGC 3379 on the basis of two plates in the blue band taken with the Bejing Schmidt telescope. The results, including luminosity profiles, photometric parameters, integrated luminosity distribution, ellipticity and position angle variation, are presented in various forms of figures and tables. Especially our geometric profiles, i.e., ellipticity and position angle variations reach up to 5, much fainter region than that any previous study did. The accuracy of the present data is checked by comparing them with the surface photometry in the literature. We find the zero-point 0.12 mag brighter than the calibration of de Vaucouleurs and Capaccioli (1979), which agrees with the values 0.10–0.15 mag difference claimed by recent observations. The systematic differences is found to be less than 0.1 mag.  相似文献

Observations of linear and circular polarization in five colour bands during a highly active state of VV Puppis in January-86 are reported. A strong linear polarization pulse with the maximum in the blue, PB22 %, is observed at the end of the bright phase when the active pole is at the limb and a weaker secondary pulse, PB7 %, is seen in the beginning of the bright phase, when the active pole reappears. Strong positive circular polarization is also observed in the blue and the ultraviolet, PUPB18 %, PV10 % during the bright phase. The circular polarization reverses the sign in the B and V bands during the faint phase and a negative polarization hump is seen when the active pole crosses the limb. The circular polarization in the V band reaches the value PV–10% at the hump, after which it remains near PV–5% during the faint phase. This is probably due to radiation coming from the second, less active pole and accretion thus takes place onto both poles. The wavelength dependences of the positive and negative parts of the circular polarization curve are different and no polarization reversal is seen in the U band. The position angle of the linear polarization is well determined during a large portion of the cycle, especially in the V band, thanks to the activity from both poles. A best fit to the position angle curve, taking into account also the duration of the positive circular polarization phase interval =0.40 (in the V band), yields the values of orbital inclination i=78°±2° and the colatitude of the active magnetic pole =146°±2°. The relatively good fit to the position angle data indicates that the simple dipole model is nearly correct in the case of VV Puppis. Some wavelength dependence is, however, seen in the position angle curves, especially in the I band where the slope / at the main pulse is considerably smaller than in the other bands. The shape of the position angle curves changes also in the blue and the ultraviolet around the middle of the bright phase. This is probably due to optical thickness effects as the side of the accretion column which is toward the observer changes near this phase.Based on observations made at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. The CrAO-WSO-network experiment was designed for detection of low-degree oscillations of the Sun representing either its normal g -modes or those driven by, e.g., rapid (hypothetical) rotation of the central solar core. The Doppler-shift measurements were made in 1974–1995 at both sites during about 13600 hr, in all. Taking into account the upper limit (0.08 m s-1) for amplitudes of potential g-modes, attention is paid to the Sun's behaviour at frequencies near the 9th daily harmonic (period P 160.The two main issues follow from analysis of the combined CrAO-WSO data: (a) in 1974–1982 the primary period of solar pulsation was P 0160.0099 ± 0.0016 ± 0.0016 min, but (b) during the last 13 yr it attained a new value, P 1 159.9654 ± 0.0010 min, which happens to be a near-annual sidelobe of P 0. We find therefore that the phase stability of the 160-min mode is no longer present: it appears to be splitted at least into a pair of oscillations,P 0 and P 1, having perhaps different physical origins. But the most striking is the fair coincidence of the strongest peaks in the two data sets: CrAO (1974–1995): P = 159.9662 ±0.0006 min, WSO (1977–1994): P = 159.9663 ± 0.0007 min. The existence of two frequencies,P -1 0 and P -1 1, with their separation corresponding to 1-yr period, seems to be difficult to explain in terms of gravity g modes.  相似文献

The 2D horizontal velocity field determined from local correlation tracking of granulation and its divergence have remarkably different appearances. The 2D horizontal velocity shows the classical 32 Mm supergranular cellular outflow bounded by the chromospheric network, whereas the divergence is dominated by distinct long-lived sources and sinks of about 7 Mm size. The 2D horizontal velocity shows no obvious evidence for 7 Mm cells, and the divergence exhibits little power with the 32 Mm scale. However, by mass continuity for a steady 3D flow in a stratified atmosphere, the divergence of the 2D horizontal component is equal to the vertical velocity divided by a height scale. Thus the 3D steady solar flow field at the bottom of the photosphere has a vertical component consisting primarily of 7 Mm sources and sinks, which define the 2D cellular-like 32 Mm continuous horizontal outflows.Simultaneous Doppler vertical velocity measurements verify the mass-continuity relation, and give a height scale equal to the density scale height in the photosphere within observational error. The observational result is consistent with our theoretical expectation. Any height scale other than the density scale height would indicate a vertical velocity thate-folds on a scale comparable to or smaller than the density scale height, which we argue is unphysical near the top of the convection zone. The continuity relation indicates that vortex-free steady horizontal velocities seen at the solar surface, i.e., the horizontal supergranular flow, must diminish with depth due to the increasing density scale height. We estimate that the horizontal supergranular flow cannot extend much more than onee-fold increase in the density scale height below the visible solar surface, about 2.4 Mm. Therefore the convection below the solar surface should be characterized by the scale of the principal steady vertical velocity component, i.e., by vertical plumes having a dimension of 7 Mm - what we have called mesogranulation - rather than closed 32 Mm cells as is widely believed.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. It is shown on the basis of analyzing the LASCO/SOHO data that the main quasi-stationary solar wind (SW), with a typical lifetime of up to 10 days, flows in the rays of the streamer belt. Depending on R, its velocity increases gradually from V3 km s–1 at R1.3 R to V170 km s–1 at R15 R . We have detected and investigated the movement of the leading edge of the main solar wind at the stage when it occupied the ray, i.e., at the formative stage of a quasi-stationary plasma flow in the ray. It is shown that the width of the leading edge of the main SW increases almost linearly with its distance from the Sun. It is further shown that the initial velocity of the inhomogeneities (`blobs') that travel in the streamer belt rays increases with the distance from the Sun at which they originate, and is approximately equal to the velocity of the main solar wind which carries them away. The characteristic width of the leading edge of the `blob' R , and remains almost unchanging as it moves away from the Sun. Estimates indicate that the main SW in the brightest rays of the streamer belt to within distances at least of order R3 R represents a flow of collisional magnetized plasma along a radial magnetic field.  相似文献

We have mapped two solar active regions using the VLA at three closely spaced frequencies (4496, 4716, and 4996 MHz) in an attempt to determine the origin of the steep spectra (index –5 to –8) sometimes observed with large single telescopes. One of the regions observed indeed shows an anomalously large slope ( –6) compared to the usual ( –2 to –2.5). The other region shows a similar slope ( –5) but with a larger range of statistical error. Two possible explanations for such steep edges in solar spectra are (1) transmission effects of neutral current sheets, and (2) the appearance of cyclotron lines. The internal evidence of the microwave maps and simultaneous optical observations favor an explanation in terms of cyclotron lines. On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, India.  相似文献

A numerical simulation of observations of the spatial properties of the five-minute oscillations is carried out, assuming the oscillations are internal gravity waves excited by granular convection according to the theory of Thomas et al. (1971). The simulation includes the effects of seeing and finite aperture. The details of the simulation are chosen to model the observational method of Frazier (1968a, b). The results show that the peak in the observed power spectrum of the oscillations can occur at a wavelength considerably longer than the true wavelength of the oscillations. In particular, the peak in Frazier's observed power spectra at wavelength 5000 km is consistent with the considerably shorter true wavelength 1500 km predicted by the gravity wave theory.  相似文献

Based on analyzing corona images taken by the LASCO C1, C2, and C3 instruments, a study is made of the behavior of the streamer belt spanning one half of the 1996–2001 cycle of solar activity, from minimum to maximum activity, in the absence of coronal mass ejections. It is shown that: (1) The position of the streamer belt relative to the solar equator is generally characterized by two angles: o and E, where o is the latitudinal position (near the solar surface) of the middle of the base of the helmet, the top of which gradually transforms to a ray of the streamer belt with a further distance from the Sun, and E is the latitude of this ray for R>5–6 R from the Sun's center where the ray becomes radial. (2) Only rays lying at some of the selected latitudes o retain their radial orientation (oE) throughout their extent. Namely: o0° (equator), o±90° (north and south poles), and the angle o lying in the range ±(65°–75°) in the N- and S-hemispheres. (3) A deviation of rays from their radial orientation in the direction normal to the surface of the streamer belt occurs: for latitudes o<|65°–75°| toward the equator (>0°) reaching a maximum in the N and S hemispheres, respectively, when OM40°, and OM–42° for latitudes o>|65°–75°| toward the pole (<0°). The regularities obtained here are a numerical test which can be used to assess of the validity of the theory for describing the behavior of the Sun's quasi-stationary corona over a cycle of solar activity.  相似文献
