Near-Earth asteroids (10302) 1989 ML and (4660) Nereus have attracted much attention as candidates for the next generation of deep space explorations. In the study, the maximum Lyapunov exponent (MLE) and MEGNO (Mean Exponential Growth factor of Nearby Orbits) index are calculated after considering the effects of major objects in the Solar system, and the stabilities of these two asteroids are discussed. For each asteroid, 1000 clonal particles consistent with the observational uncertainties are generated from a multivariate normal distribution. Statistical results display probably emerging regions of each asteroid within 0.1 million years, and provide distributions of occurrence times in the phase space of semi-major axis versus eccentricity. We estimate the probability of close encounters and collisions between the asteroid and Earth or other planets. Furthermore, secular resonances, Kozai resonance, and mean motion resonances are analyzed for nominal orbits of the two asteroids. We conclude that 1989 ML is in the region dominated by mean motion resonances with terrestrial planets. The probability of close encounters with them is relatively small, therefore its orbit is relatively stable. Nereus is located in a region that can have close-encounters with the Earth, and it has an extremely unstable orbit.  相似文献

At present, approximately 1500 asteroids are known to evolve inside or sticked to the exterior 1:2 resonance with Mars at a ? 2.418 AU, being (142) Polana the largest member of this group. The effect of the forced secular modes superposed to the resonance gives rise to a complex dynamical evolution. Chaotic diffusion, collisions, close encounters with massive asteroids and mainly orbital migration due to the Yarkovsky effect generate continuous captures to and losses from the resonance, with a fraction of asteroids remaining captured over long time scales and generating a concentration in the semimajor axis distribution that exceeds by 20% the population of background asteroids. The Yarkovsky effect induces different dynamics according to the asteroid size, producing an excess of small asteroids inside the resonance. The evolution in the resonance generates a signature on the orbits, mainly in eccentricity, that depends on the time the asteroid remains captured inside the resonance and on the magnitude of the Yarkovsky effect. The greater the asteroids, the larger the time they remain captured in the resonance, allowing greater diffusion in eccentricity and inclination. The resonance generates a discontinuity and mixing in the space of proper elements producing misidentification of dynamical family members, mainly for Vesta and Nysa-Polana families. The half-life of resonant asteroids large enough for not being affected by the Yarkovsky effect is about 1 Gyr. From the point of view of taxonomic classes, the resonant population does not differ from the background population and the excess of small asteroids is confirmed.

The aim of this work is to present a systematic survey of the strength of the mean motion resonances (MMRs) in the Solar System. We know by applying simple formulas where the resonances with the planets are located but there is no indication of the strength that these resonances have. We propose a numerical method for the calculation of this strength and we present an atlas of the MMRs constructed with this method. We found there exist several resonances unexpectedly strong and we look and find in the small bodies population several bodies captured in these resonances. In particular in the inner Solar System we find one asteroid in the resonance 6:5 with Venus, five asteroids in resonance 1:2 with Venus, three asteroids in resonance 1:2 with Earth and six asteroids in resonance 2:5 with Earth. We find some new possible co-orbitals of Earth, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. We also present a discussion about the behavior of the resonant disturbing function and where the stable equilibrium points can be found at low and high inclination resonant orbits.  相似文献

The rotation states of small asteroids and meteoroids are determined primarily by their collisions, gravitational torques due to the Sun and planets (in the case of close encounters), and internal dissipative effects (that relax the free-precession energy toward the fundamental state of principal-axis rotation). Rubincam has recently pointed out that thermal reemission on irregular-shaped bodies also results in a torque that may secularly change both the rotation rate and the orientation of the spin axis (the so-called YORP effect). Here we pursue investigation of this effect. Keeping the zero thermal-relaxation approximation of Rubincam and the assumption of the principal-axis rotation, we study the YORP effect both for precisely determined shapes of near-Earth asteroids and also for a large statistical sample of automatically generated shapes by the Gaussian-sphere technique of Muinonen. We find that the asymptotic state of the YORP evolution is characterized by an arbitrary value of the obliquity, with higher but nearly equal likelihood of 0°/180° and 90° states. At the adopted approximation, the most typical feature of this end state of the YORP evolution is secular deceleration of the rotation rate, which means that at some instant collisions will randomize the rotation state. In a minority of cases, the final state of the obliquity evolution leads to a permanent acceleration of the body's rotation, eventually resulting in rotational fission. The YORP-induced slow evolution may also play an important role in driving the rotation state of small asteroids toward the resonances between the forced precession due to the solar torque and perturbations of the orbital node and inclination. We find that for small Themis asteroids these resonances are isolated in the relevant range of frequencies, and the YORP evolving rotation may be either temporarily captured or rapidly jump across these resonances. In contrast, the possible values of the forced precession for small Flora asteroids may be resonant with clustered, nonisolated lines of the orbital perturbation. The individual rotation histories of small Flora asteroids may be thus very complicated and basically unpredictable. We comment on possible astronomical consequences of these results.  相似文献

A simple method for numerical integration of the equations of motion of small bodies of the Solar System is proposed, which is especially efficient in studying the orbits with small perihelion distances. The evolution of orbits of 121 numbered asteroids with perihelion distances q < 1.2 AU is investigated over the time interval of years 2000–2100 with allowance made for the gravitational influence of nine planets and three largest asteroids. The circumstances of close encounters of asteroids with the Earth and other terrestrial planets are presented.  相似文献

Meteorites may be pieces of main-belt asteroids, derived by cratering collisions. The physical strength of an asteroid critically affects the quantity of ejecta that can be placed in orbits (probably resonant) that evolve to cross the Earth's. Asteroid strengths very widely due to initial composition and size (e.g., weak carbonaceous material or strong rock), subsequent geophysical evolution (e.g., formation of a strong iron core), and subsequent collisional evolution (e.g., conversion of a strong rocky body into a weak rubble pile). The meteorite yield on Earth further depends on meteorite strength, which affects longevity in space and survival through the atmosphere. We show that meteorites may be derived mainly by cratering rather than by disruptive fragmentation and from large main-belt asteroids rather than from small, Earth-approaching bodies. The model combines a wide variety of evidence from various disciplines to yield results consistent with meteorite statistics. However, no claim is made for uniqueness of this model, and many elements still admit considerable uncertainty.  相似文献

A great number of probable encounters of asteroid 2015 RN35 with the Earth have been found; many of them were unknown earlier. The main characteristics and properties of the corresponding trajectories have been obtained. Probable impacts of the asteroid Apophis with the Earth are also discussed. The results suggest that the multitudes of potential impacts of hazardous asteroids with the Earth can be and must be analyzed in more detail. Such an analysis is required to plan and implement the measures on preventing the asteroid impact hazard.  相似文献

The Canada‐France‐Hawaii Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) comprising about 25 000 MegaCam images was data mined to search for serendipitous encounters of known Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). A total of 143 asteroids (109 NEAs and 34 PHAs) were found on 508 candidate images which were field corrected and measured carefully, and their astrometry was reported to Minor Planet Centre. Both recoveries and precoveries (apparitions before discovery) were reported, including data for 27 precovered asteroids (20 NEAs and 7 PHAs) and 116 recovered asteroids (89 NEAs and 27 PHAs). Our data prolonged arcs for 41 orbits at first or last opposition, refined 35 orbits by fitting data taken at one new opposition, recovered 6 NEAs at their second opposition and allowed us to ameliorate most orbits and their Minimal Orbital Intersection Distance (MOID), an important parameter to monitor for potential Earth impact hazard in the future (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The search for asteroids that maintain stable motion in the zone between the Earth and Mars has been performed. The near-Earth object 2013 RB6, which has avoided close encounters with the planets for a long period of time, has been found. Integration of the equations of motion of the object shows that its dynamical lifetime in the zone between the Earth and Mars significantly exceeds 100 Myr. 2013 RB6 moves away from orbital resonances with the planets, but is in the secular resonance ν5. Solving the question of its origin requires further observations.  相似文献

Interplanetary dust particles from comets and asteroids pervade the Solar System and become temporarily trapped into orbital resonances with Earth, leading to a circumsolar dust ring. Using the unique vantage point of the Spitzer Space Telescope from its Earth-trailing solar orbit, we have measured for the first time the azimuthal structure of the Earth’s resonant dust ring. There is a relative paucity of particles within 0.1 AU of the Earth, followed by an enhancement in a cloud that is centered 0.2 AU behind Earth with a width of 0.08 AU along the Earth’s orbit. The North ecliptic pole is ∼3% brighter at 8 μm wavelength when viewed from inside the enhancement. The presence of azimuthal asymmetries in debris disks around other stars is considered strong evidence for planets. By measuring the properties of the Earth’s resonant ring, we can provide “ground truth” to models for interactions of planets and debris disks, possibly leading to improved predictions for detectability of life-bearing planets. The low amplitude of the azimuthal asymmetry in the Earth’s circumsolar ring suggests significant contributions to the zodiacal light from particles that are large (>30 μm) or have large orbital eccentricity that makes capture into mean motion resonances inefficient.  相似文献

Ovenden's hypothesis suggesting former existence of a planet of 90 Earth masses which supposedly filled the Titius-Bode gap in the asteroid belt and then suddenly disappeared 16 million years ago, is critically examined by the morphological method. It is shown that an explosive removal, however improbable, could have led to the formation of the asteroids from a non-explosive core (the nuclear charge being placed outside of it), but that life on Earth would have been completely destroyed by three successive blasts-one from the direct impact of the ejecta of the planet, another from the increased radiation suddenly emitted by the Sun when hit by the ejecta, and a third one (arriving, however, first) from the radiation emitted by the nuclear explosion. The geological record of the continuity of Life on Earth for the past 109 years definitely excludes the possibility of such an explosion in the late Tertiary. The other mode of removal of the planet-in a gravitational encounter with an intruder either from interstellar space or from the unexplored outskirts of the solar system, under the condition of not having disturbed the existing regularity of planetary orbits-is not only extremely improbable, to be expected once during 100 million times the age of the solar system; but it would leave no asteroids behind, all of the previously existing primaeval asteroids having been rapidly eliminated in encounters with the hypothetical planet.Whatever the merits of Ovenden's long-range calculations of the secular perturbations of coplanar circularized planetary orbits, the hypothesis of a massive planet to have existed in the asteroidal region and then recently to have suddenly disappeared, belongs to the realm of the impossible. After such a hypothetical event, either we would not be here on Earth, or there would be no asteroids in their present place between Jupiter and Mars.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May 1978.  相似文献

The 64 asteroids with reliably known rotational properties [rotation period P, magnitude B(1, 0) and maximum change of magnitude Δm] are studied. A plot of B(1,0) vs P illustrates that smaller asteroids tend to rotate faster than larger asteroids. The mean P for all 64 asteroids is 8.8 hr. The class of irregular asteroids (taken to be those with Δm >0.38, i.e., those whose axes differ by more than 40%) called group C are studied separately; they are shown to rotate much faster (mean P = 7.7 hr) than the remaining more regular asteroids (mean P = 9.2 hr). The smaller bodies are more irregular on the average. These results are interpreted in terms of a model in which collisions break asteroids into irregular fragments. Since angular momentum is transmitted in such collisions, significant increases in the mean can occur in the angular velocity of the largest fragment. The effect of interasteroid collisions on the mean orbital parameters is briefly discussed and is shown to be masked by selection effects.  相似文献

The possibility of incorporating the resonant effect and jet stream formation process into the problems of the Hilda asteroids and Kirkwood gaps is discussed qualitatively. It appears that formation of the precursor jet streams of the resonant asteroids in the main belt would be suppressed due to the collisional perturbation effect of the ambient matter in this region. Together with the biased distribution of near-resonant asteroids, the depletion across the Kirkwood gaps could be understood. Within the context of jet stream theory the existence of Hilda asteroids outside the main belt requires the original limit of the main belt to be not much more extensive than the present value of 3.5 AU. This is suggestive of a cosmogonic origin of the observed outer limit.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the dynamical evolution and orbital stability of objects in the asteroid belt. A simple physical model, including full gravitational perturbations from both giant planets, is used to compute the dynamical evolution of 1000 test particles simulating the primitive asteroids. The criterion of planet crossing (or close approach in the case of resonant objects) is used to reject particles from the simulation. 44 per cent of the particles survived for the whole time-span covered by the numerical integration (∼109 yr).
The 4:1, 3:1 and to a lesser extent the 2:1 Kirkwood gaps are formed in ∼107 yr of evolution, representing direct numerical evidence about their gravitational origin.
We found that the rms eccentricity and inclination of the sample experience a fast increase during the first 106 yr. The final rms eccentricity is 0.11, ∼60 per cent smaller than the present rms eccentricity (0.17). Nevertheless, the gravitational action of the giant planets suffices to prevent the formation of large objects, allowing catastrophic collisions and the subsequent depletion of material from this zone of the Solar system. The excited eccentricity by Jupiter and Saturn may favour mutual encounters and the further increase of the relative velocities up to their present values.  相似文献

Abstract– Micrometeoroids with 100 and 200 μm size dominate the zodiacal cloud dust. Such samples can be studied as micrometeorites, after their passage through the Earth atmosphere, or as microxenoliths, i.e., submillimetric meteorite inclusions. Microxenoliths are samples of the zodiacal cloud dust present in the asteroid Main Belt hundreds of millions years ago. Carbonaceous microxenoliths represent the majority of observed microxenoliths. They have been studied in detail in howardites and H chondrites. We investigate the role of carbonaceous asteroids and Jupiter‐family comets as carbonaceous microxenolith parent bodies. The probability of low velocity collisions of asteroidal and cometary micrometeoroids with selected asteroids is computed, starting from the micrometeoroid steady‐state orbital distributions obtained by dynamical simulations. We selected possible parent bodies of howardites (Vesta) and H chondrites (Hebe, Flora, Eunomia, Koronis, Maria) as target asteroids. Estimates of the asteroidal and cometary micrometeoroid mass between 2 and 4 AU from the Sun are used to compute the micrometeoroid mass influx on each target. The results show that all the target asteroids (except Koronis) receive the same amount (within the uncertainties) of asteroidal and cometary micrometeoroids. Therefore, both these populations should be observed among howardite and H chondrite carbonaceous microxenoliths. However, this is not the case: carbonaceous microxenoliths show differences similar to those existing among different groups of carbonaceous chondrites (e.g., CI, CM, CR) but two sharply distinct populations are not observed. Our results and the observations can be reconciled assuming the existence of a continuum of mineralogical and chemical properties between carbonaceous asteroids and comets.  相似文献

Many asteroids with a semimajor axis close to that of Mars have been discovered in the last several years. Potentially some of these could be in 1:1 resonance with Mars, much as are the classic Trojan asteroids with Jupiter, and its lesser-known horseshoe companions with Earth. In the 1990s, two Trojan companions of Mars, 5261 Eureka and 1998 VF31, were discovered, librating about the L5 Lagrange point, 60° behind Mars in its orbit. Although several other potential Mars Trojans have been identified, our orbital calculations show only one other known asteroid, 1999 UJ7, to be a Trojan, associated with the L4 Lagrange point, 60° ahead of Mars in its orbit. We further find that asteroid 36017 (1999 ND43) is a horseshoe librator, alternating with periods of Trojan motion. This asteroid makes repeated close approaches to Earth and has a chaotic orbit whose behavior can be confidently predicted for less than 3000 years. We identify two objects, 2001 HW15 and 2000 TG2, within the resonant region capable of undergoing what we designate “circulation transition”, in which objects can pass between circulation outside the orbit of Mars and circulation inside it, or vice versa. The eccentricity of the orbit of Mars appears to play an important role in circulation transition and in horseshoe motion. Based on the orbits and on spectroscopic data, the Trojan asteroids of Mars may be primordial bodies, while some co-orbital bodies may be in a temporary state of motion.  相似文献

Masses of 19 asteroids have been determined from the analysis of their gravitational effect on the motion of perturbed bodies. The following asteroids were selected as perturbed bodies: (1) those which had single close encounters with the perturbing asteroid; (2) those whose mean motion was in a 1 : 1 commensurability with that of the perturber and which had close or moderate recurrent encounters with the perturber. The perturber mass was determined from observations of several tens of perturbed asteroids that were selected from these two groups. The selection criterion was the error of the mass determined from observations of only one asteroid. Positional observations of the asteroids on the interval 1900–2002 were used. The masses were determined with errors by an order-half an order of magnitude smaller than the masses found. The results are compared with those of other authors.  相似文献
