The time-integrated slip rate in fault zones can be determined if the deformed deposits are reliably dated. Here, we report optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of Late Pleistocene fluvial deposits cut by the Wangsan fault, southeastern Korea, which displaces a hanging wall block of about 28 m. Five sandy samples of the deformed Quaternary deposits were dated by quartz OSL using the single aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol. Three samples taken from the footwall block show stratigraphically consistent OSL ages of 54±7, 76±5 and 90±6 ka, from top to bottom. Two samples collected from the same layer in the hanging wall block show reproducible OSL ages of 81±5 and 82±5 ka, which are also in good agreement with the stratigraphic relationships. Our OSL ages yield an average sedimentation rate of the Quaternary deposits as around 0.04 mm a−1, and a minimum value of time-integrated slip rate as 0.52 mm a−1. This minimum slip rate is considerably higher than those reported earlier for Quaternary faults in southeastern Korea. The youngest OSL age (54±7 ka) constrains the maximum value of the recurrence interval of the fault movement.  相似文献

The Wangsan fault is exposed at Kyeongju, Korea. The andesite is unconformably covered by Quaternary alternating conglomerate and sandstone deposits. The unconformity is cut by the thrust fault which displaces a hanging wall block of about 30 m. Exposed at the surface of this fault is a light gray and brown fault gouge, about 40–120 cm thick. In order to test the consistency of ESR ages from a single fault gouge zone, we collected six gouge samples systematically along and across the Wangsan fault. We found that six samples collected from the same gouge zone show consistent ESR date estimates (average 550 ka). Because fault rock is rare along faults in unconsolidated sediments due to low confining stress near the surface, we consider that this fault gouge has been moved up with the hanging wall block along the fault. The estimated average uplift rate of the hanging wall block is about 0.04 cm/year based on the age of the displaced Quaternary deposits (vertical separation; about 20 m) dated by OSL dating methods. The depth of the fault gouge at the time of reactivation, which was estimated from uplift rate and the ESR ages, is about 220 m. Therefore, we conclude that the results of ESR age estimates represent the time of reactivation of the fault gouge at a depth of 220 m in the past during fault movement, because later movements which occurred during uplift near the surface may not have zeroed ESR signals significantly for ESR dating of fault movements.  相似文献

The Quaternary overburden of Bełchatów outcrop contains five glaciolacustrine units. The three most widespread are presented. They originated during the advance of the Sanian (= Elsterian), Odranian (= Drenthian) and Wartanian (= Warthian) ice sheets. The following lake environments are distinguished: lake-bottom plain, tectonically active subaqueous slope, subaqueous fan, terminoglacial subaqueous fan and prodelta fan. The lakes formed under changing conditions; the most significant tectonic activity of the graben took place during the Odranian and the lake deposits from this glaciation represent terminoglacial conditions. The Wartanian lake deposits are the only ones that show a shallow-water facies that has not been eroded, because it has not been overridden by an ice sheet.Sedimentation conditions changed during the succeeding glaciations. Endogenic factors affecting sedimentation (i.e. tectonic activity of the graben) complemented some exogenic controls, such as the distance from the ice sheet, the thermal conditions of the lake, and the type of sediment supply. Tectonics changed the style of deposition so much that the lakes, although situated in a lowland area, displayed characteristics of deep valleys.  相似文献

China's largest gold resource is located in the highly endowed northwestern part of the Jiaodong gold province. Most gold deposits in this area are associated with the NE- to NNE-trending shear zones on the margins of the 130–126 Ma Guojialing granite. These deposits collectively formed at ca. 120 ± 5 Ma during rapid uplift of the granite. The Dayingezhuang deposit is a large (> 120 t Au) orogenic gold deposit in the same area, but located along the eastern margin of the Late Jurassic Linglong Metamorphic Core Complex. New 40Ar/39Ar geochronology on hydrothermal sericite and muscovite from the Dayingezhuang deposit indicate the gold event is related to evolution of the core complex at 130 ± 4 Ma and is the earliest important gold event that is well-documented in the province. The Dayingezhuang deposit occurs along the Linglong detachment fault, which defines the eastern edge of the ca. 160–150 Ma Linglong granite–granodiorite massif. The anatectic rocks of the massif were rapidly uplifted, at rates of at least 1 km/m.y. from depths of 25–30 km, to form the metamorphic core complex. The detachment fault, with Precambrian metamorphic basement rocks in the hangingwall and the Linglong granitoids and migmatites in the footwall, is characterized by early mylonitization and a local brittle overprinting in the footwall. Gold is associated with quartz–sericite–pyrite–K-feldspar altered footwall cataclasites at the southernmost area of the brittle deformation along the detachment fault. Our results indicate that there were two successive, yet distinct gold-forming tectonic episodes in northwestern Jiaodong. One event first reactivated the detachment fault along the edge of the Linglong massif between 134 and 126 Ma, and then a second reactivated the shears along the margins of the Guojialing granite. Both events may relate to a component of northwest compression after a middle Early Cretaceous shift from regional NW–SE extension to a NE–SW extensional regime.  相似文献

Reactivation of cratonic basement involves a number of processes including extension, compression, and/or lithospheric delamination. The northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), adjacent to the Inner Mongolian Orogenic Belt, was reactivated in the Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic. During this period, the northern margin of the NCC underwent magmatism, N–S compression, regional exhumation, and uplift, including the formation of E–W-trending thick-skinned and thin-skinned south-verging folds and south-verging ductile shear zones. zircon U–Pb SHRIMP ages for mylonite protoliths in shear zones which show ages of 310–290 Ma (mid Carboniferous–Early Permian), constraining the earliest possible age of deformation. Muscovite within carbonate and quartz–feldspar–muscovite mylonites from the Kangbao–Weichang and Fengning–Longhua shear zones defines a stretching lineation and gives 40Ar/39Ar ages of 270–250 Ma, 250–230 Ma, 230–210 Ma, and 210–190 Ma. Deformation developed progressively from north to south between the Late Paleozoic and Triassic. Exhumation of lower crustal gneisses, high-pressure granulites, and granites occurred at the cratonic margin during post-ductile shearing (~ 220–210 Ma). An undeformed Early Jurassic (190–180 Ma) conglomerate overlies the deformed rocks and provides an upper age limit for reactivation and orogenesis. Deformation was induced by convergence between the southern Mongolia and North China cratonic blocks, and the location of this convergent belt controlled later deformation in the Yanshan Tectonic Province. This province formed as older E–W-trending Archean–Proterozoic sequences were reactivated along the northern margin of the NCC. This reactivation has features typical of cratonic basement reactivation: compression, crustal thickening, remelting of the mid to lower crust, and subsequent orogenesis adjacent to the orogenic belt.  相似文献

The crystalline basement of the Sierra de San Luis, which belongs to the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas in central Argentina, consists of three main units: (1) Conlara, (2) Pringles, and (3) Nogolí metamorphic complexes. In the Pringles Metamorphic Complex, mafic–ultramafic bodies occur as discontinuous lenses along a narrow central belt concordant with the general NNE–SSW structural trend. A metamorphic gradient from granulite to greenschist facies is apparent on both sides of the mafic–ultramafic bodies. This work focuses on the characteristics of the mylonitization overprinted on the mafic–ultramafic intrusives in the Pringles Metamorphic Complex and their gneissic–migmatitic surroundings, both previously metamorphosed within the granulite facies. Petrogenetic grid and geothermobarometry applied to the paragenesis equilibrated during the mylonitic event, together with mineral deformation mechanisms, indicate that mafic and adjacent basement mylonites developed under upper amphibolite transitional to granulite facies metamorphic conditions at intermediate pressures (668–764 °C, 6.3–6.9 kbar, 0.3 < XCO2 < 0.7). However, the following mylonitic assemblages can be distinguished from the external limits of the Pringles Metamorphic Complex to its center: lower amphibolite facies  middle amphibolite facies  upper amphibolite transitional to granulite facies. Geothermobarometry applied to mylonitic assemblages indicate a temperature gradient from 555 °C to 764 °C and pressures of 6–7 kbar for the mylonitic event. This event is considered to have developed on a preexisting temperature gradient attributed to the intrusion of mafic–ultramafic bodies. The concentration of sulfides in mylonitic bands and textural relationships provide evidence of remobilization of primary magmatic sulfides of the mafic–ultramafic rocks (+PGM) during the mylonitic event. A lower-temperature final overprint produced brittle fracturing and localized retrogression on mafic–ultramafic minerals and ores by means of a water-rich fluid phase, which gave rise to a serpentine + magnetite ± actinolite association. Concordantly in the adjacent country rocks, fluids channeled along preexisting mylonitic foliation planes produced local obliteration of the mylonitic texture by a randomly oriented replacement of the mylonite mineralogy by a chlorite + sericite/muscovite + magnetite assemblage. Observed mineral reactions combined with structural data and geothermobarometry suggest a succession of tectonometamorphic events for the evolution of the Pringles Metamorphic Complex of Sierra de San Luis, developed in association with a counterclockwise PTd path. The most likely geological setting for this type of evolution is a backarc basin, associated with east-directed Famatinian subduction initiated in Mid-Cambrian times and closed during the collision of the allochthonous Precordillera terrane in Mid-Ordovician times.  相似文献

The Tan-Lu fault zone (TLFZ) is the largest of the major faults in eastern China. Many strong earthquakes have occurred on its section in North China, but no quake greater than M  6 has been documented in history at its northeastern section, the Yilan-Yitong fault (YYF) in Northeast China. It is usually considered that this fault has been inactive since late Quaternary and incapable of generating moderate-sized quakes. This conclusion is, however, questioned by our recent work based on high-resolution satellite image interpretation and field investigation. We found a 70-km-long surface scarp near Fangzheng county in Heilongjiang province (HLJP) and a 20-km-long scarp near Shulan county in Jilin province (JLP), and both are associated with the YYF. The trenches across these two scarps reveal a 14C displacement date of 1730 ± 40 years BP at Fangzheng and of 4410 ± 30 years BP at Shulan. The dextral offsets of the Songhua River and Second Songhua River and nearly horizontal fault striations indicate that the new activity of the YYF has been dominated by dextral strike slipping with a normal component. These new data suggest that, at least for partial sections, the YYF has been active since the Holocene, implying a potential seismic hazard. However, current quake-protection standards in this region are very low due to the previous view that the YYF fault has not been active since the late Quaternary. If an M  7 quake takes place on this fault, it will be a devastating event. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a detailed study on the whole YYF and to reassess its future seismic risk.  相似文献

The Kunlun Range, a reactivated orogenic belt, constitutes the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The extreme relief and major landforms of the Kunlun Range are a product of late Cenozoic tectonics and erosion. However, well-developed late Quaternary terraces that occur along the northern slope of the Kunlun Range probably resulted from climatic change rather than surface uplift. The terrace sequences formed in thick Quaternary valley fills and have total incision depths of 50–60 m. Optically stimulated luminescence dating was employed to place time controls on the valley fills and associated terraces. Dating results suggest that periods of significant aggradation were synchronous between different rivers and correspond to the last glacial stage. The abrupt change from aggradation to incision occurred between 21.9 ± 2.7 and 16 ± 2.2 ka, coincident with the last glacial–interglacial transition. Additional terraces developed during the late glacial period and early to middle Holocene. Based on a broader set of chronological data in northern Tibet, at least four regional incision periods can be recognized. Chronological data, terrace elevation profiles, and climate proxy records suggest that these terracing periods were triggered by cool and/or wet climatic conditions. A geometric survey of the riverbed longitudinal profile suggests that surface uplift serves as a potential dynamic forcing for long-term incision. A model is proposed for terrace formation as a response to climatic perturbation in an uplifted mountain range.  相似文献

The present article is the first time reporting of a paleoearthquake that occurred during Late Pleistocene time along the Nalagarh Thrust (NT) in the Pinjaur Dun in northwestern sub-Himalaya. Using CORONA satellite photographs, multi-spectral IRS satellite data, and aerial photographs, a prominent active fault has been identified at Nalagarh in Pinjaur Dun. This fault in the alluvial fan is located very close to the NT which borders the topographic front of the Tertiary rocks against Quaternary deposits. A trench excavation survey was carried out at Nalagarh for detailed paleoseismic studies across this thrust fault. Displacing all the lithologic units of the fan sequence, the fault plane has an average dip of 30° due ENE and a vertical displacement of 1.6 m and slip of ~2.5 m along the fault. The lithological units, consisting of alternating sand and gravel, show back tilting and asymmetrical tight folding. Based on Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages, the oldest litho-unit in the trench is 85.83 ± 7.2 ka and the youngest is 67.05 ± 8.4 ka. The OSL age of the sample collected from the easterly exposure of the fault shows an age of 20 ka. The faulting and associated induced deformation features suggest occurrence of a Late Pleistocene large magnitude earthquake along NT in the Nalagarh region of the Pinjaur Dun following the deposition of the Quaternary sedimentary units. The Late Pleistocene fault substantiates the seismic potential of Pinjaur Dun and calls for more exhaustive study of paleoearthquakes in this fast developing industrial belt and highly populous mountainous region.  相似文献

The Yulong Mountain massif is tectonically active during Quaternary and contains the southernmost glacierized mountains in China, and all of Eurasia. Past glacial remnants remain preserved on the east and west sides of the Yulong Mountains. A ridge of moraine protruded into the Jinsha River at the Daju Basin, damming the river, and forming a lake at the head of the Jinsha River. Cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al provide exposure age dates for the moraine-based fluvial terraces left behind after the dam breached, and for moraine boulders on both the eastern and western sides of the Yulong Mountains. Our results yield exposure ages for the terraces that range from 29 ka to 8 ka, and a downcutting rate of 7.6 m/ka. The preservation of the remaining dam for over 10,000 years suggests stability of the moraine dam and gradual erosion of the dam during drainage of the dammed lake. From the relationship between exposure ages and elevations of the fluvial terraces located in different walls of the Daju fault, we obtain a late Quaternary dip-slip rate of about 5.6 m/ka for the Daju fault. The exposure ages of 10.2 ka and 47 ka for moraine boulders located in the east and west sides of the Yulong Mountains, respectively, coincide with warm periods in the late Quaternary. This implies that precipitation provides the major control for glaciations on the Yulong Mountains, a domain of the southwest Asian monsoon.  相似文献

Karstic bauxites in western Guangxi, China, comprise two subtypes: Permian bauxite and Quaternary bauxite. The Quaternary bauxite originated from the breaking up, rolling, and accumulating of Permian bauxite in karstic depressions in Quaternary. Various types of rare earth element (REE) minerals were discovered during the formation of the Permian and Quaternary bauxites from the Xinxu, Longhe, and Tianyang bauxite deposits in this study. Five types of REE minerals, including bastnäsite, parisite, cerianite, rhabdophane, and churchite, were identified. Bastnäsite and parisite are the most abundant, and they are widely developed in the Permian ore and also present in the Quaternary ore. Obvious variations in bastnäsite and parisite REE compositions were observed, which is ascribed to distinctions in the source materials in the primary weathering profile from different areas. The mode of occurrence of bastnäsite and parisite suggests they were mainly precipitated under alkaline and reducing conditions during the Permian bauxite-forming stage and underwent intensive corrosion in the Quaternary. Churchite was formed during the Permian weathering stage under acidic condition. Both cerianite and rhabdophane occur in fractures within the Permian bauxite ore, indicating that both formed during the Quaternary weathering stage. It is considered that the rhabdophane enriched in Ce have formed locally, in the process of that the Ce3 +, released from bastnäsite rapidly, entered the rhabdophane lattice before being oxidized to Ce4 +. Cerianite was mainly found in association with Mn–Al hydroxides, suggesting that the released Ce3 + was oxidized into Ce4 + and precipitated cerianite in fractures within the Permian bauxite ore. Mass balance equations reveal a depletion in nearly all REEs during the transformation from the Permian to the Quaternary bauxite ore, mainly caused by the dissolution of bastnäsite and parisite. The genesis of the REE minerals, together with the occurrence of other minerals, indicates that intensively acidic and oxidizing conditions developed before the formation of the Permian bauxite ore. Towards the end of the Permian, the conditions became reducing and alkaline, favorable for the large-scale bauxitization. The Quaternary bauxite-forming stage was characterized by variable pH and Eh conditions, with acidic (pH = 4–6) and oxidizing (Eh > 2) conditions at the surface of the exposed Permian bauxite ore.  相似文献

The Hengshan massif is an exhumed, mid-crustal, plutonic–metamorphic dome formed during Cretaceous crustal extension in the Jiangnan orogenic belt, central South China. Multiple thermochronometers (mica 40Ar/39Ar, apatite fission track and zircon (U–Th)/He) are applied to its footwall along a slip-parallel transect to quantify its thermal history and cooling rate, and the slip magnitude, rate, initial geometry and kinematic evolution of the low-angle Hengshan detachment fault. Our thermochronological data, in conjunction with previous ages, indicate that (1) footwall rocks cooled from ~ 700 °C to ~ 60 °C in less than 60 Myr (136–80 Ma) at variable rates ranging from ~ 50 °C/Myr to ~ 13 °C/Myr, (2) the Hengshan detachment fault accommodated ~ 8–12 km of total slip at variable slip rates from 0.14 to 1 mm/yr during tectonic exhumation, (3) the footwall has been tilted ~ 26°–50° to the east since slip began, indicating that the low-angle Hengshan detachment fault initiated at a steep dip and was passively rotated to a more gentle orientation during subsequent normal slip. This study provides compelling evidence supporting that the low-angle detachment fault in the extensional dome can be generated by the reactivation and passive rotation of an initially steep reverse fault during normal slip. In addition, our thermochronological data constrain the time of extension in the Hengshan dome between 136 and 80 Ma, which implies that the back-arc extension within South China associated with the rollback of the Paleo-Pacific slab might have lasted until at least 80 Ma.  相似文献

The Bocaina Plateau, which is situated on the eastern flank of the continental rift of southeastern Brazil, is the highest part of the Serra do Mar. Topographic relief in this area is suggested to be closely related to its complex tectono-magmatic evolution since the breakup of Western Gondwana and opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. Apatite fission track ages and track length distributions from 27 basement outcrops were determined to assess these hypotheses and reconstruct the denudation history of the Bocaina Plateau. The ages range between 303 ± 32 and 46 ± 5 Ma, and are significantly younger than the stratigraphic ages. Mean track lengths vary from 13.44 ± 1.51 to 11.1 ± 1.48 μm, with standard deviations between 1.16 and 1.83 μm. Contrasting ages within a single plateau and similar ages at different altitudes indicate a complex regional tectonothermal evolution. The thermal histories inferred from these data imply three periods of accelerated cooling related to the Early Cretaceous continental breakup, Early Cretaceous alkaline magmatism, and the Paleogene evolution of the continental rift of southeastern Brazil. The oldest fission track ages (> 200 Ma) were obtained in the Serra do Mar region, suggesting that these areas were a long-lived source of sediments for the Paraná, Bauru, and Santos basins.  相似文献

Qiongdongnan Basin is a Cenozoic rift basin located on the northern passive continental margin of the South China Sea. Due to a lack of geologic observations, its evolution was not clear in the past. However, recently acquired 2-D seismic reflection data provide an opportunity to investigate its tectonic evolution. It shows that the Qiongdongnan Basin comprises a main rift zone which is 50–100 km wide and more than 400 km long. The main rift zone is arcuate in map view and its orientation changes from ENE–WSW in the west to nearly E–W in the east. It can be divided into three major segments. The generally linear fault trace shown by many border faults in map view implies that the eastern and middle segments were controlled by faults reactivated from NE to ENE trending and nearly E–W trending pre-existing fabrics, respectively. The western segment was controlled by a left-lateral strike-slip fault. The fault patterns shown by the central and eastern segments indicate that the extension direction for the opening of the rift basin was dominantly NW–SE. A semi-quantitative analysis of the fault cut-offs identifies three stages of rifting evolution: (1) 40.4–33.9 Ma, sparsely distributed NE-trending faults formed mainly in the western and the central part of the study area; (2) 33.9–28.4 Ma, the main rift zone formed and the area influenced by faulting was extended into the eastern part of the study area and (3) 28.4–20.4 Ma, the subsidence area was further enlarged but mainly extended into the flanking area of the main rift zone. In addition, Estimates of extensional strain along NW–SE-trending seismic profiles, which cross the main rift zone, vary between 15 and 39 km, which are generally comparable to the sinistral displacement on the Red River Fault Zone offshore, implying that this fault zone, in terms of sinistral motion, terminated at a location near the southern end of the Yinggehai Basin. Finally, these observations let us to favour a hybrid model for the opening of the South China Sea and probably the Qiongdongnan Basin.  相似文献

This paper presents 14 zircon U–Pb determinations (SHRIMP and LA-MC-ICP-MS) for key geological units from the Rio Apa Cratonic Terrane (RACT), which is considered the southernmost exposed part of the Amazonian Craton in southwestern Brazil. The zircon U–Pb ages and geological data indicate that the RACT was formed by the accretion of magmatic arcs in a continental margin active from 1950 to 1720 Ma. The RACT is composed of three major terranes (Western, Eastern and Southeastern Terranes) with distinct evolution histories. The Western Terrane presents orthogneisses and granites formed at ~ 1950–1940 Ma and subduction-related granites and volcanic rocks formed at 1900–1880 Ma and 1840–1830 Ma. These basement rocks are covered by a greenschist facies metavolcano-sedimentary succession (Rio Naicata Formation) with basal volcanic rocks formed at 1813 ± 18 Ma. A gabbronoritic dyke of the Rio Perdido Suite hosted by the Rio Naitaca Formation yields an age of 1589 ± 44 Ma. The Eastern and Southeastern Terranes present deformed leucogranites generated within the intervals 1780–1720 Ma and 1810–1790 Ma, respectively. Both terranes are covered by a metavolcano-sedimentary succession (Alto Tererê Formation) dominated by Barrovian-type amphibolite facies metamorphic assemblages, suggestive of a collisional event. Available 40Ar–39Ar data (hornblende, muscovite and biotite) indicate that the proto-RACT evolved to a collisional orogen between 1310 and 1270 Ma and behaved as a cratonic mass after 1270 Ma, preceding the assembly of Rodinia. The available data allow us to interpret the RACT as a part of the Ventuari–Tapajós Province of the Amazonian Craton, which was fragmented and dispersed as a microcontinent. It was subsequently reincorporated into the SW Amazonian Craton, along the Sunsás Belt, as an allochthonous terrane. In a global perspective, the tectono-magmatic events of the RACT are consistent with a long-lived accretionary orogen possibly related to an active margin of Columbia.  相似文献

The Liwa region of the United Arab Emirates contains some of the largest and most areally extensive megabarchanoid sand dunes on a global scale. Here we present optical dating results on samples of aeolian sediment from deep drill cores extracted from the largest dune field of the Liwa area. Optical dating of these core sediments using the single aliquot regeneration protocol indicates Mid–Late Holocene phases of rapid dune deposition, the most recent period of reactivation began at ca 2.8 ka. This event was preceded by a period of deposition at ca 5 ka. These results suggest that the dune systems of the southeastern Arabian Peninsula are closely linked to changes in Late Quaternary global climate, particularly linked to the intensity and spatial extent of palaeomonsoon rainfall. Since the last precessional maxima at ca 9 ka, at which time a peak in monsoonal rainfall has been recognised, a significant environmental transition to widespread desert conditions occurred in an apparently abrupt fashion. During the initial period of aridification, large quantities of sand were transported and deposited in the form of large and very large (up to 160 m high) scale aeolian bedforms. Following the initial phase of aeolian accumulation, the system appears to have remained in stasis.  相似文献

A recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach was applied to determine the multiple events for the Chugaryeong fault belt, Korea. Each event was determined by a combined approach of the optimized illite-polytype quantification and the K–Ar age-dating of clay fractions separated from the fault clays. The Late Cretaceous to Paleogene events (76.5 ± 0.8, 69.1 ± 0.6, 59.3 ± 0.7, and 48.2 ± 0.7 Ma) were recognized by calculating the authigenic 1M/1Md illite ages on the IAA plots of the fault clays. The Early Cretaceous ages (121.7–124.7 and 112.4 ± 1.5 Ma) were also obtained from the convergent intercepts of 100% 2M1 illite on the IAA plots. The absence of the 2M1 illites in the host-rock indicates that the Early Cretaceous ages represent the timings of high-T hydrothermal events of >280 °C. The 2M1 illites in the fault clays should be pre-formed by a fluid-rock interaction under a relatively high-T subsurface condition, and be mechanically reworked into the near surface along the fault by post-tectonic events. This is the first report determining the absolute age constraints of multi-activated tectonic events from a fault. These geochronological determinations of the multiple events recorded in the Chugaryeong fault belt are crucial to establish the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula since the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

Lake Issyk-Kul occupies a large Late Mesozoic–Cenozoic intramontane basin between the mountain ranges of the Northern Kyrgyz Tien Shan. These ranges are often composed of granitoid basement that forms part of a complex mosaic assemblage of microcontinents and volcanic arcs. Several granites from the Terskey, Kungey, Trans-Ili and Zhetyzhol Ranges were dated with the zircon U/Pb method (SHRIMP, LA-ICP-MS) and yield concordant Late Ordovician–Silurian (~ 456–420 Ma) emplacement ages. These constrain the “Caledonian” accretion history of the Northern Kyrgyz Tien Shan in the amalgamated Palaeo-Kazakhstan continent. The ancestral Tien Shan orogen assembled in the Early Permian when final closure of the Turkestan Ocean ensued collision of Palaeo-Kazakhstan and Tarim. A Late Palaeozoic structural basement fabric formed and Middle–Late Permian post-collisional magmatism added to crustal growth of the Tien Shan. Permo‐Triassic cooling (~ 300–220 Ma) of the ancestral Tien Shan was unraveled using 40Ar/39Ar K-feldspar and titanite fission-track (FT) thermochronology on the Issyk-Kul granitoids. Apatite thermochronology (FT and U–Th–Sm/He) applied to the broader Issyk-Kul region elucidates the Meso-Cenozoic thermo-tectonic evolution and constrains several tectonic reactivation episodes in the Jurassic, Cretaceous and Cenozoic. Exhumation of the studied units occurred during a protracted period of intracontinental orogenesis, linked to far-field effects of Late Jurassic–Cretaceous accretion of peri-Gondwanan blocks from the Tethyan realm to Eurasian. Following a subsequent period of stability and peneplanation, incipient building of the modern Tien Shan orogen in Northern Kyrgyzstan started in the Oligocene according to our data. Intense basement cooling in distinct reactivated and fault-controlled sections of the Trans-Ili and Terskey Ranges finally pinpoint important Miocene–Pliocene (~ 22–5 Ma) exhumation of the Issyk-Kul basement. Late Cenozoic formation of the Tien Shan is associated with ongoing indentation of India into Eurasia and is a quintessential driving force for the reactivation of the entire Central Asian Orogenic Belt.  相似文献

New 40Ar/39Ar ages, based on incremental heating techniques for groundmass separates of 25 samples, are presented for the Harrat Al-Madinah volcanic field, part of Harrat Rahat in the north western part of the Arabian plate. This area is an active volcanic field characterized by the occurrence of two historical eruptions approximately in 641 and 1256 AD. Field investigations of the main volcanic landforms indicate dominantly monogenetic strombolian eruptions, in addition to local more explosive eruptions. The lavas consist mainly of olivine basalt and hawaiite flows with minor evolved rocks of mugearite, benmoreite, and trachyte that occur mainly as domes, tuff cones and occasionally as lava flows. Previous K/Ar dating shows that the Harrat Al-Madinah lava flows and associated domes comprise seven units spanning an age range of ca. 1.7 Ma–Recent. The new 40Ar/39Ar age determinations confirm, to a great extent, the previously obtained K/Ar ages in the sense that no major systematic biases were found in the general stratigraphy of the different flow units. However, the 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages show that volcanism in this area began in the Neogene (∼10 Ma) and continued to Recent, with the most voluminous eruptions occurring in the Quaternary. Neogene volcanism occurred in at least three pulses around 10, 5 and 2 Ma, whereas Quaternary volcanism produced at least seven units reflecting lava flow emplacement in the time period of 1.90 Ma–Recent. Thus, the whole duration of volcanic activity in the Harrat Al-Madinah (10 Ma–Recent) appears much longer than that previously identified. The longevity of volcanism in the same part of the moving Arabian plate and absence of evidence for uni-directional migration of volcanic activity indicate that there is no fixed plume beneath this region. The NNW-trending distribution of the volcanic vents is parallel to the Red Sea, and suggests their origin is related to periodic extensional episodes along the reactivated Red Sea fault system.  相似文献
