Using an apparent-magnitude limited Main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7(SDSS DR7), we investigate the correlation between morphologies and luminosity for the Main galaxy sample. Our Main galaxy sample is divided into two classes: Main galaxies only with TARGET_GALAXY flag (bestPrimtarget = 64), and ones also with other flags. It is found that for the second class Main galaxies, the early-type proportion monotonously increases with increasing luminosity nearly in the whole luminosity region. But for the first class Main galaxies, the early-type proportion increases with increasing luminosity only within a certain luminosity region (−22.2 < M r  < −19.8). In the high luminosity region (M r  < −22.2), the early-type proportion of the first class Main galaxies even decreases dramatically with increasing luminosity. We also analyze the correlation between morphologies and luminosity of galaxies around the peak of the redshift distribution ( 0.07 ≤ z ≤ 0.08 ). In such a narrow redshift region, we still observe strong correlation between morphologies and luminosity, which shows that this correlation is fundamental.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for companions around the isolated galaxies from the 2MIG catalog. Among 3227 2MIG galaxies we detected 125 objects with a total of 214 neighbors having radial velocity differences of ΔV < 500 km/s and projected separations of R p < 500 kpc relative to the 2MIG galaxies. The median luminosity of the companions is 1/25 of the luminosity of catalog galaxies, which has little effect on the dynamic isolation of the latter. The median ratio of the orbital mass to the K-luminosity determined from 60 companions of E and S0 2MIG galaxies, 63M /L , is significantly greater than that found from the spiral galaxy companions (17M /L ). We note that a fraction of 2MIG galaxies with companions may be a part of low-contrast diffuse structures: clouds and filaments.  相似文献

The Schmidt method for constructing the luminosity function of galaxies is generalized to include the dependence of the density of galaxies on distance in the near universe. The logarithmic luminosity function (LLF) of the field galaxies as a function of morphological type is constructed. It is found that the LLF for all the galaxies, as well as separately for elliptical and lenticular galaxies, can be represented as a Schechter function within a narrow range of absolute magnitudes. The LLF for spiral galaxies is a Schechter function over a rather wide range of absolute magnitudes, −21.0 ≤ M ≤ −14 . The parameter M* varies little over the spiral galaxies. The parameter α in the Schechter function decreases on going from early to later spirals. On going from elliptical to lenticular galaxies, from early spiral galaxies and onward to later spiral galaxies, a decrease in the average luminosity of the galaxies is observed in the bright end, −23 ≤ M ≤ −17.8 . The completeness and average density of the samples are estimated for galaxies of different morphological types. The average number density of all the galaxies within the range −23 ≤ M ≤ −13 is 0.126 Mpc-3.  相似文献

We review selected measurements of the galaxy luminosity function including the field, the local group, the local sphere, nearby clusters (Virgo, Coma and Fornax) and clusters in general. We conclude that, excluding the super-luminous cD and D galaxies, the overall cluster luminosity function is fully consistent with the field luminosity function over the magnitude range in common (–22 ≤ M B –5log h 0.68 ≤ –17). We find that only in the core regions of clusters (r ≤ 300 kpc) does the overall form of the luminosity function show significant variation. However when the luminosity function is subdivided by spectral type some further variations are seen. We argue that these results imply: substantial late infall, efficient star-formation suppression, and the confinement of mass-changing evolutionary processes to the core regions only. We present the results of our observational study of two candidates for polar-ring galaxies (PRGs). Both objects, A2330-3751 and SDSS J000911.57-003654.7, are giant edge-on galaxies with large-scale structures resembling polar rings observed along their minor axes. The optical diameter of the putative ring reaches 60 kpc in A2330-3751 and 18 kpc in SDSS J000911.57-003654.7. To estimate the space density of PRGs, we have constructed their luminosity function in the range of B-band absolute magnitudes from −17· m 5 to −21· m 5. We have found that ∼10−3 of the nearby galaxies exhibit polar structures. Polar rings around early-type (E/S0) galaxies are encountered approximately a factor of 3 more frequently than those around spiral ones. According to our estimates, ∼20–30 PRGs in which large-scale rings are seen almost face-on must be observed among relatively bright galaxies (B ≤ 15 m ).  相似文献

We have investigated the correlations among color, morphology and luminosity for all LRGs, cut I LRGs, cut II LRGs, and Main galaxies that are also classified as LRGs. It is found that the morphology of LRGs is tightly correlated with luminosity. The rest-frame u-g color of cut I LRGs and cut II LRGs is nearly independent of luminosity, but the color of Main galaxies is correlated with luminosity. For cut I LRGs and Main galaxies, the early type proportion apparently changes with color: at the rest-frame u-g < 1.3 it increases strongly with increasing color, while at the rest-frame u-g > 1.3 it decreases with increasing color. We also notice that the morphology of cut II LRGs is only a weak function of color. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 335–345 (August 2007).  相似文献

The peculiar velocity field for 907 galaxies with heliocentric radial velocities VH ≤ 3000 km/s is examined. The data are divided into three samples, organized according to the principles behind the method for determining the distance to the galaxies: the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), fluctuations in the surface brightness, and the infrared Tully-Fisher relation for spiral galaxies viewed edge-on. The latter sample includes 410 galaxies. For determining the distance to the galaxies in this sample, additional regressors were introduced into the Tully-Fisher relation, in particular the “color index” K-m21, which make it possible significantly to reduce the dispersion with respect to the regression curve. All three samples showed good agreement in the peculiar velocity distribution. Based on each of these samples, as well as on the combined sample, detailed maps of the field of peculiar velocities of the galaxies are constructed for VH ≤ 3000 km/s. An analysis shows that most of the observed features of this map can be explained by large-scale density variations in the galactic distribution. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 3, pp. 409–422 (August 2008).  相似文献

We explore the evolution of the early-type galaxy population in the rich cluster Abell 2390 at z=0.23. For this purpose, we have obtained spectroscopic data of 51 elliptical and lenticular galaxies with MOSCA at the 3.5 m telescope on Calar Alto Observatory. As our investigation spans both a broad range in luminosity (–22.3≤MB≤–:19.3)and a wide field of view (10′×10′), the environmental dependence of different formation scenarios can be analysed in detail as a function of radius from the cluster center. In this paper, we present first results on the Faber-Jackson relation and, for a subsample of 14 galaxies with morphological and structural parameters from HST, we also investigate the evolution of the Kormendy relation and the Fundamental Plane. We find a mild luminosity evolution of the early-type galaxies in Abell 2390: our objects are on average brighter by m B∼0.4 mag. The widely varying dwarf galaxy counts in different environments provide a strong challenge to standard hierarchical clustering models. The luminosity function is not universal, but seems to be strongly dependent upon environment. In this paper we describe an automated procedure for detecting and measuring very Low Surface Brightness (LSB) features in deep CCD data. We apply this procedure to large area CCD survey fields of the Virgo cluster and find 105 dwarf LSB galaxies previously uncatalogued over an area of ∼14 sq deg. We show that there are many more faint (14≤MB≤–10) LSB galaxies than would be predicted from extrapolation of the Virgo cluster catalogue luminosity function. Over our limited range of measurement the faint end slope of the luminosity function becomesα=–1.6. Although these galaxies contribute a small fraction of the total stellar light of the cluster, they may contribute significantly to the mass in galaxies if they have large mass-to-light ratios similar to those recently measured for Local Group dwarf galaxies. By a comparison with different environments, the Virgo Cluster seems to be highly `dwarf rich' if considering the dwarf to giant ratio or it's luminosity function faint end slope. We have derived the galaxy luminosity function in various regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 496 from a wide field image in the I band. A Schechter function fit in the 17≤ IAB ≤22(–19.5≤ MIAB ≤ –14.5) magnitude interval gives a steep power law index, which is somewhat steeper in the outer regions than in the inner zones. This result agrees with previous findings obtained by several teams on the Coma cluster and can be interpreted as due to the fact that faint galaxies are accreted by large ones in the central regions. We present a list of 75 isolated dwarf galaxies of later types which have no neighbors with a relative radial velocity difference of less than 500 km/s or projected distances of less than 500 kpc. These were selected from ~2000 dwarf galaxies with radial velocities VLG<3500 km/s within the volume of the local supercluster. In terms of their sizes, luminosities, and the amplitudes of their internal motions, the isolated dwarf galaxies do not differ significantly from gas-rich dwarf galaxies in groups and clusters. However, the median mass of neutral hydrogen per unit luminosity for the isolated galaxies is a factor of two greater than for the galaxies of later types in groups. We have also identified 10 presumably isolated spheroidal dwarf galaxies. The discovery of isolated dwarf galaxies populated exclusively by old stars is of great interest for modern cosmological scenarios of galaxy formation.  相似文献

In this work, I construct a LRG sample with the redshift of 0.6 ≤ z ≤ 0.75 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 15 (SDSS DR15), which contains 184172 CMASS LRGs and 27158 eBOSS LRGs and examine the environmental dependence of the u–r, u–g, g–r, r–i, and i–z colors in this galaxy sample. I divide this LRG sample into subsamples with a redshift binning size of Δz = 0.01, and analyze the environmental dependence of the u–r, u–g, g–r, r–i, and i–z colors for these subsamples in each redshift bin. Overall, the u–r, u–g, g–r, and r–i colors of galaxies in LRG sample with the redshift of 0.6 ≤ z ≤ 0.75 are very weakly correlated with the local environment, which shows that minimal environmental dependence of galaxy parameters can continue to higher redshifts. It is noteworthy that i–z color of this CMASS + eBOSS LRG sample shows substantial correlation with the local environment in the redshift region 0.70 ≤ z ≤ 0.75.  相似文献

The low-dispersion spectra of the First Byurakan Survey and the red and blue images of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey have been used to identify optically 100 infrared sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The work was carried out over the region 3h 50m ≤ α ≤ 7h 40m and +69° ≤ δ −73° with an area of 75 square degrees. The optical coordinates, their deviations from the infrared coordinates, V magnitudes, color indices, preliminary classes for all the objects, and a number of remarks on interesting objects are presented. Three objects were found to be quasars, 36 are galaxies (including Seyferts and an interacting pair), 5 are faint planetary nebulae, 9 are carbon stars, and 47 are stars of late M subclasses. Summary. Hubble's (1936, p. 125) view that the Local Group (LG) is “a typical, small group of nebulae which is isolated in the general field” is confirmed by modern data. The total number of certain and probable Group members presently stands at 35. The half-mass radius of the Local Group is found to be kpc. The zero-velocity surface, which separates the Local Group from the field that is expanding with the Hubble flow, has a radius Mpc. The total mass of the LG is . Most of this mass appears to be concentrated in the Andromeda and Milky Way subgroups of the LG. The total luminosity of the Local Group is found to be :. This yields a mass-to-light ratio (in solar units) of . The solar motion with respect to the LG is \,km s, directed towards an apex at , and . The velocity dispersion within the LG is km s. The galaxies NGC 3109, Antlia, Sextans A and Sextans B appear to form a distinct grouping with kpc relative to the LG, that is located beyond the LG zero-velocity surface at a distance of 1.7 Mpc from the Local Group centroid. The luminosity distribution of the LG has a slope . This value is significantly less negative than that which is found in rich clusters of galaxies. The luminosity distribution of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies is steeper than that for dwarf irregulars. Furthermore the dSph galaxies are strongly concentrated within the Andromeda and Milky Way subclusters of the Local Group, whereas the majority of dIr galaxies appear to be free-floating members of the LG as a whole. With the possible exception of Leo I and Leo A, most LG members appear to have started forming stars simultaneously Gyr ago. Many of the galaxies, for which evolutionary data are available, appear to have shrunk with time. This result is unexpected because Hubble Space Telescope observations appear to show galaxies at to be smaller than they are at . In the Large Magellanic Cloud the rate of cluster formation was low for a period that extended from Gyr to Gyr ago. The rate of cluster formation may have increased more rapidly 3–5 Gyr ago, than did the rate of star formation. The reason for the sudden burst of cluster formation in the LMC Gyr ago remains obscure. None of the dwarf galaxies in the LG appears to have experienced a starburst strong enough to have produced a “boojum”. Received 14 April 1999  相似文献

From the Main galaxy data of the SDSS Data Release 4 (SDSS4), we have identified close galaxy pairs at neighbourhood radius R = 100 kpc by three-dimensional cluster analysis. Using the criterion that an "isolated galaxy pair" must be separated from its "nearest neighbor" by more than 500 kpc, we constructed an isolated galaxy pair sample of 1158 pairs. We also constructed a random pair sample by randomly selecting 1158 galaxy pairs from the Main galaxy sample, which has the same redshift distribution as the isolated galaxy pair sample, and in which the two components of any pair have the same redshifts. Comparative studies of luminosity and size between the members of the galaxy pairs are performed. We find and further confirm there is no tendency for paired galaxies to have similar luminosities or sizes. From the isolated pair sample we also selected a subsample with the magnitude limit of the primary raised by 2 magnitudes, so as to include pairs in which the secondary is 2 magnitudes fainter than the primary. This subsample contains 82 pairs. A random pair sample is similarly constructed.  相似文献

A fourth list of optically identified point sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog, containing 34 nonstellar objects, is given. The identifications were made on the basis of the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), the First Byurakan Survey, blue and red maps from the Palomar Sky Survey (FBS), and infrared fluxes at 12, 25, 60, and 100 μm in the region of +61° ≤ δ ≤ 65° and 11h15m ≤ α ≤ 18h35m with an area of 200 sq. deg. For the identified objects we determined their optical coordinates, their departures from the IR coordinates, their stellar V magnitudes, color indices CI, and preliminary types. The optical magnitudes of the objects are in the range 12m.5-27m. The identified galaxies include Seyfert candidates, interacting pairs, galaxies with companions, superassociations, etc. The galaxies are encountered in groups in many cases, and the IR emission may be due to heating of intergalactic matter within a group. Finder charts from the DDS are given for these objects. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41, No. 3, pp. 359–366, July–September, 1998.  相似文献

From the volume-limited Main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6), we construct three samples with g–r color bins , labeled S1–S3, to investigate how other properties of galaxies depend on environment at fixed color. For each sample, we measure the local three-dimensional galaxy density in a comoving sphere with radius equal to the distance to the 5th nearest galaxy for each galaxy, select about 5% galaxies and construct the two subsamples at both extremes of density. Our study suggests that the environmental dependence of luminosity is mainly due to the environmental dependence of galaxy color and the correlation between color and luminosity. In addition, we preferentially conclude that concentration index and morphologies are not strongly correlated with local density at fixed color, and that galaxy color is a galaxy property very predictive of the local environment. Because SDSS spectroscopy is incomplete for bright galaxies at very low redshifts, we also use a volume-limited Main galaxy sample with a lower redshift limit z = 0.05, which contains 94,954 galaxies at 0.05 < z < 0.089 with −22.40 < Mr < −20.16, and reach the same conclusions.Due to the bimodality of the u–r color distribution, we classify galaxies as ‘red’ and ‘blue’, respectively, and further subdivide the samples into star-forming galaxies and passive ones using Hα equivalent width, W0(Hα). Results show that color and star formation activity of galaxies are galaxy properties very predictive of the local environment.  相似文献

We use the C24668, Fe4383, H γ A and H δ A spectral absorption line indices, together with U - and V -band photometry of 101 galaxies in the Coma cluster, to investigate how mean age and metal abundance correlate with galaxy luminosity. In particular, we use the line index measurements to address the origin of the colour–magnitude relation (CMR). We find that the CMR in Coma is driven primarily by a luminosity–metallicity correlation. We additionally show evidence for a relation between age and luminosity, in the direction predicted by the semi-analytic hierarchical clustering models of Kauffmann & Charlot, but this is only present in the C24668 index models, and could be an effect of the lack of non-solar abundance ratios in the Worthey models used.
By comparing deviations from the CMR with deviations in absorption index from analogous 'index–magnitude' relations, we find that colour deviations bluewards of the mean relation are strongly correlated with the hydrogen Balmer line series absorption. We show that the properties of these blue galaxies are consistent with the presence of a young stellar population in the galaxies, rather than with a reduced metallicity.  相似文献

The relationship between the IR luminosity of spiral galaxies in the 40-120 mm range and their radio luminosity at 0.408,1.49,2.38,5.0, and 10.7 GHz is investigated. At all frequencies there is a close correlation between the radio luminosity and the infrared luminosity of spiral galaxies. The slopes of the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are less than unity at all frequencies, but they differ little from it within the error limits. A close correlation also exists between the fluxes of radio and IR emission. The correlation coefficients are high for objects of all morphological subtypes, while the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are nearly linear. They are also nearly linear for spiral galaxies of different classes in the Byurakan classification. It is also shown that the correlation between radio and IR luminosities is weakened for high IR luminosities. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 1, pp. 33-44, January–March, 2000.  相似文献

Part three of optically identified point sources from the IRAS Point Source Catalog contains 113 objects. The identifications were based on the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS), the First Byurakan Survey, blue and red maps from the Palomar Sky Survey, and infrared fluxes at 12, 25, 60, and 100 μm in the region of +61° ≤ δ ≤ + 65° and 11h15m ≤ α ≤ 18h35m with an area of 200 sq. deg. Of the 119 sources in this region, 6 could not be identified owing to the absence of optical counterparts with the given coordinates. For the identified objects we determined their optical coordinates, their departures from the IR coordinates, and their stellar V magnitudes, color indices (CI), and preliminary types. The objects have optical magnitudes in the range of 8n–21m. Of the 113 objects, 31 turned out to be stars of spectral types K and M, 1 is a planetary nebula, 2 are candidates to be quasi- stellar objects, and 79 are galaxies. A list of the 48 nonstellar objects is given. The identified galaxies include Seyfert candidates, interacting pairs, galaxies with companions, superassociations, etc. The galaxies are in groups in many cases, and the IR emission may be due to heating of intergalactic matter within a group. Finder charts for these objects from the DSS are given. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 41, No. 2, pp. 251–262, April-June, 1998.  相似文献
