Iron coordination and redox reactions in synthetic and coastal seawater were investigated at nanomolar concentrations using 59Fe radiometry and ion-pair solvent extraction of iron chelated by sulfoxine (8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate) and BPDS (bathophenanthroline disulfonate). Using sulfoxine, we determined the rate at which the monomeric Fe(III) hydroxide species present in seawater of pH 8 are complexed by the microbial siderophore deferriferrioxamine B and the synthetic chelator EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). Forward rate constants of 2 × 106M−1s−1 and 20 M−1s−1, respectively, were obtained. The kinetics of these reactions have not been measured previously at pH values near that of seawater. Conditional equilibrium constants measured for the Fe(III)-EDTA system are consistent with published stability constants for EDTA complexes and for Fe(III) hydrolytic equilibria minus the neutral Fe(OH)3o species, suggesting it is not quantitatively significant near pH 8. Commercial humic acid was found to have sufficient affinity for iron to compete with Fe(III) hydrolysis in seawater, and limited evidence was obtained for an interaction with dissolved organic matter in coastal seawater. In our investigations of redox reactions using BPDS to trap Fe(II) produced in the medium, we observed enhanced photoreduction of Fe(III) by humic acid as well as reduction induced by solutes released from phytoplankton in seawater of pH 8. Although the method is sensitive enough to work at near-oceanic levels of iron, the difficulty in distinguishing Fe(II) generated by Fe(III)-BPDS interactions from Fe(II) produced by other means limits its utility. This analytical ambiguity may be generalizable to other methods which measure ferrous iron in seawater using Fe(II)-specific ligands.  相似文献

A sensitive method for iron determination in seawater has been adapted on a submersible chemical analyser for in situ measurements. The technique is based on flow injection analysis (FIA) coupled with spectrophotometric detection. When direct injection of seawater was used, the detection limit was 1.6 nM, and the precision 7%, for a triplicate injection of a 4 nM standard. At low iron concentrations, on line preconcentration using a column filled with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) resin was used. The detection limit was 0.15 nM (time of preconcentration = 240 s), and the precision 6%, for a triplicate determination of a 1 nM standard, allowing the determination of Fe in most of the oceanic regimes, except the most depleted surface waters. The effect of temperature, pressure, salinity, copper, manganese, and iron speciation on the response of the analyser was investigated. The slope of the calibration curves followed a linear relation as a function of pressure (Cp = 2.8 × 10− 5P + 3.4 × 10− 2 s nmol− 1, R2 = 0.997, for Θ = 13 °C) and an exponential relation as a function of temperature (CΘ = 0.009e0.103Θ, R2 = 0.832, for P = 3 bar). No statistical difference at 95% confidence level was observed for samples of different salinities (S = 0, 20, 35). Only very high concentration of copper (1000 × [Fe]) produced a detectable interference. The chemical analyser was deployed in the coastal environment of the Bay of Brest to investigate the effect of iron speciation on the response of the analyser. Direct injection was used and seawater samples were acidified on line for 80 s. Dissolved iron (DFe, filtered seawater (0.4 μm), acidified and stored at pH 1.8) corresponded to 29 ± 4% of Fea (unfiltered seawater, acidified in line at pH 1.8 for 80 s). Most of Fea (71 ± 4%) was probably a fraction of total dissolvable iron (TDFe, unfiltered seawater, acidified and stored at pH 1.8).  相似文献

The interactions of Fe(II) and Fe(III) with the inorganic anions of natural waters have been examined using the specific interaction and ion pairing models. The specific interaction model as formulated by Pitzer is used to examine the interactions of the major components (Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Sr2+, Cl, SO4, HCO3, Br, CO32−, B(OH)4, B(OH)3 and CO2) of seawater and the ion pairing model is used to account for the strong interaction of Fe(II) and Fe(III) with major and minor ligands (Cl, SO42−, OH, HCO3, CO32− and HS) in the waters. The model can be used to estimate the activity and speciation of iron in natural waters as a function of composition (major sea salts) and ionic strength (0 to 3 M). The measured stability constants (KFeX*) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) have been used to estimate the thermodynamic constants (KFeX) and the activity coefficient of iron complexes (γFeX) with a number of inorganic ligands in NaClO4 medium at various ionic strengths: In(KFeXFeγX) = InKFeX − In(γFeX) The activity coefficients for free ions (γFe, γx) needed for this extrapolation have been estimated from the Pitzer equations. The activity coefficients of the ion pairs have been used to determine Pitzer parameters (BFeX, BFeX0, CFeXφ) for the iron complexes. These results make it possible to estimate the stability constants for the formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes over a wide range of ionic strengths and in different media. The model has been used to determine the solubility of Fe(III) in seawater as a function of pH. The results are in good agreement with the measurements of Byrne and Kester and Kuma et al. When the formation of Fe organic complexes is considered, the solubility of Fe(III) in seawater is increased by about 25%.  相似文献

The pH of seawater can be measured in the field using potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods. The use of pH standards or buffers is an important aspect of the calibration of both methods in a laboratory on a common concentration scale. The buffers can also be used to monitor the performance of pH meter and spectrophotometer during a cruise. A procedure is described for the determination of the pH of seawater, where the proton concentration is expressed as moles kg-H2O−1 using seawater buffers. The buffers are prepared in synthetic seawater in the laboratory by the methods outlined by Bates and coworkers. We have prepared four buffers (Bis, Tris, Morpholine and 2-Aminopyridine) that cover a pH range from 6.8 to 8.8. The emf values of the buffers were measured with a H2, Pt/AgCl, Ag electrode system after their preparation and bottling for use at sea. The measured emf values were found to be in good agreement (±0.05 mV) with the original measurements of Bates and coworkers from 0 to 45°C. The measured pH of these buffers are in good agreement (±0.001 pH units) with the values calculated from the equations of Dickson on the total pH scale based on Bates et al. Studies are underway to access the long term stability of these buffers. We have also used these buffers to calibrate systems used to make potentiometric and spectrophotometric measurements of pH on seawater relative to the H2, Pt/Ag, AgCl electrode from 5 to 45°C.  相似文献

Self-diffusion coefficients of five major ions have been determined by a radioactive tracer method (capillary tube method) in seawater of salinity 34.86 at 25°C. Data are presented for Na+, Ca2+, Cl, SO42, and HCO3, which constitute about 95% by weight of sea salt. The influence of temperature and salinity on these coefficients has been studied for Na+ and Cl which are the major components of sea salt: self-diffusion coefficients of these two ions have been measured in seawater, at different temperatures for a salinity of 34.86 and at different salinities for a temperature of 25°C. Diffusion coefficients of the same ions have been determined at 25°C by using another radioactive tracer method (quasi-steady cell method). In this experiment, seawater ions were allowed to diffuse from natural seawater into dilute seawater. Data have been obtained at 25°C for Na+, Ca 2+, Cl, SO42− and HCO3, corresponding to different salinity gradients.  相似文献

Equilibria between Chelex 100* and manganese, zinc and cadmium ions were used to determine the complexation of these trace metals in 36‰ Gulf Stream seawater at 25°C and pH 8.2. The method utilized radiotracers (54Mn, 65Zn, and 109Cd) to quantify trace metal adsorption from trace metal-amended seawater and from seawater containing a series of ethylenediaminetetracetate (EDTA)—metal ion buffers. Results were consistent with Chelex adsorption of both trace metal ions and trace metal—EDTA chelates. Equilibrium models fitted to the data were used to establish conditional stability constants for Chelex adsorption of manganese, zinc and cadmium ions and for adsorption of EDTA-chelates. These models also yielded ratios of free metal ions to total dissolved trace metal concentrations in seawater: 10−0.1 for manganese, 10−0.2 for zinc, and 10−1.5 for cadmium. Independent measurements with a cadmium ion-selective electrode also yielded a free: total cadmium ratio of 10−1.5.  相似文献

The northern part of Okinawa Island suffers from red soil pollution—runoff of red soil into coastal seawater—which damages coastal ecosystems and scenery. To elucidate the impacts of red soil pollution on the oxidizing power of seawater, hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) and iron species including Fe(II) and total iron (Fe(tot), defined as the sum of Fe(II) and Fe(III)) were measured simultaneously in seawater from Taira Bay (red-soil-polluted sea) and Sesoko Island (unpolluted sea), off the northern part of Okinawa Island, Japan. We performed simultaneous measurements of HOOH and Fe(II) because the reaction between HOOH and Fe(II) forms hydroxyl radical (•OH), the most potent environmental oxidant. Gas-phase HOOH concentrations were also measured to better understand the sources of HOOH in seawater. Both HOOH and Fe(II) in seawater showed a clear diurnal variation, i.e. higher in the daytime and lower at night, while Fe(tot) concentrations were relatively constant throughout the sampling period. Fe(II) and Fe(tot) concentrations were approximately 58% and 19% higher in red-soil-polluted seawater than in unpolluted seawater. Gas-phase HOOH and seawater HOOH concentrations were comparable at both sampling sites, ranging from 1.4 to 5.4 ppbv in air and 30 to 160 nM in seawater. Since Fe(II) concentrations were higher in red-soil-polluted seawater while concentrations of HOOH were similar, •OH would form faster in red-soil-polluted seawater than in unpolluted seawater. Since the major scavenger of •OH, Br, is expected to have similar concentrations at both sites, red-soil-polluted seawater is expected to have higher steady-state •OH concentrations.  相似文献

It is shown that the data of Kremling (1983) for iron concentrations in sulphidic basin water fit to a solubility curve assuming reasonable constants for FeS in equilibrium with Fe2+, Fe(HS)2 and FeHS2. Explanations are offered for the fact that the iron and manganese concentrations are considerably lower in the Framvaren bottom water with high sulphide concentrations (6–8 mM) than in the Gotland Deep with lower sulphide concentrations (0.001–0.052 mM). For other trace metals (Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb) equilibrium conditions do not seem to exist.  相似文献

To characterize more fully the nature of the fluorophores present in the dissolved organic matter found in seawater, steady state and time-resolved measurements of the luminescence quenching of a number of samples of marine dissolved organic matter with known quenchers, such as iodide, acrylamide and methyl viologen (MV) (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium), were compared. Quenching characteristics of these systems were analyzed using Stern-Volmer plots for both intensity and lifetime measurements. The bimolecular quenching constants, κq, for these quenchers were found to decrease in the order MV2+q 1010M−1s−1) > Iq 2 × 109 M−1 s−1) >CH2CHCONH2q 2 × 108 M−1 s−1) for the samples measured. The results also show that different samples are quenched to differing extents by the quenchers studied, that ionic strength alters the quenching constants, and that both static and diffusional quenching mechanisms may operate.Such studies are appropriate to the quantification of the reactivity of the singlet states of the chromophores found within marine dissolved organic matter. Although excess energy of the singlet state may be readily transferred to another chemical species, the combination of competing physical deactivation paths and the low concentrations of efficient quenches in the oceans serves to lessen the direct chemical impact of this process.  相似文献

A liquid-liquid partition, ligand exchange procedure involving the formation of copper(II) complexes with acetylacetone is presented for the determination of stability constants and concentrations of copper chelators in seawater. Acetylacetone competes with natural ligands for copper, and the equilibrium concentration of the copper acetylacetonate complex is used in speciation calculations. The concentration of the complex is calculated by partitioning a fraction of it into an organic phase and determining the total Cu concentration in that phase by back extracting with acid, and analyzing by flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentration of Cu acetylacetonate in seawater in equilibrium with the organic phase is calculated from the partition coefficient. The simple, thermodynamically well characterized procedure offers several advantages over previous techniques. Studies using organic free seawater and model ligands show good agreement between experimental and calculated conditional stability constants. Studies from seawater in Biscayne Bay, Florida, indicate two ligand types are present; type 1, K1 = 1.2 × 1012, CL1 = 5.1 × 10−9 M; type 2, K2 = 2.8 × 1010, CL2 = 1.1 × 10−7 M. Speciation is dominated by ligand type 1. Depth profiles of [Cu(II)]free/[Cu(II)]total measured with the procedure at ambient copper concentrations show an increase from < 5 × 10−5 at 50–60 m to > 1 × 10−3 at the surface at two stations off the Florida coast.  相似文献

Cadmium is a biologically important trace metal that co-varies with phosphate (PO43− or Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate, DIP) in seawater. However, the exact nature of Cd uptake mechanisms and the relationship with phosphate and other nutrients in global oceans remain elusive. Here, we present a time series study of Cd and PO43− from coastal Antarctic seawater, showing that Cd co-varies with macronutrients during times of high biological activity even under nutrient and trace metal replete conditions. Our data imply that Cd/PO43− in coastal surface Antarctic seawater is higher than open ocean areas. Furthermore, the sinking of some proportion of this high Cd/PO43− water into Antarctic Bottom Water, followed by mixing into Circumpolar Deep Water, impacts Southern Ocean preformed nutrient and trace metal composition. A simple model of endmember water mass mixing with a particle fractionation of Cd/P (αCd–P) determined by the local environment can be used to account for the Cd/PO43− relationship in different parts of the ocean. The high Cd/PO43− of the coastal water is a consequence of two factors: the high input from terrestrial and continental shelf sediments and changes in biological fractionation with respect to P during uptake of Cd in regions of high Fe and Zn. This implies that the Cd/PO43− ratio of the Southern Ocean will vary on glacial–interglacial timescales as the proportion of deep water originating on the continental shelves of the Weddell Sea is reduced during glaciations because the ice shelf is pinned at the edge of the continental shelf. There could also be variations in biological fractionation of Cd/P in the surface waters of the Southern Ocean on these timescales as a result of changes in atmospheric inputs of trace metals. Further variations in the relationship between Cd and PO43− in seawater arise from changes in population structure and community requirements for macro- and micronutrients.  相似文献

The results of a potentiometric investigation (by ISE-H+, glass electrode) on the speciation of phytate ion (Phy12−) in an ionic medium simulating the major components (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl and SO42−) of natural seawater, at different salinities and t = 25 °C, are reported. The work was particularly aimed at determining the possible formation of mixed Ca2+–Mg2+–phytate ion pairs, and to establish how including the formation of these mixed species would affect the speciation modeling in seawater media. After testing various speciation models, that considering the formation of the MgCaH3Phy5−, MgCaH4Phy4−, Mg2CaH3Phy3− and Mg2CaH4Phy2− species was accepted, and corresponding stability constants were determined at two salinities (S = 5, 10). A discussion is reported both on the choice of the experimental conditions and on the possibility to extend these results to those typical of real seawater. A detailed procedure is also described to demonstrate that the stability of these species is higher than that statistically predicted. As reported in literature, a parameter, namely log X, has been determined in order to quantify this extra stability for the formation of each mixed species at various salinities. For example, at S = 10, log X113 = 2.67 and log X114 = 1.37 for MgCaH3Phy5− and MgCaH4Phy4− (statistical value is log Xstat = 0.60), and log X213 = 6.11 and log X214 = 2.15 for Mg2CaH3Phy3− and Mg2CaH4Phy2− (log Xstat = 1.43), respectively. Results obtained also showed that the formation of these species may occur even in conditions of low salinity (i.e. low concentration of alkaline earth cations) and low pH (i.e., more protonated ligand).  相似文献

Thermodynamic considerations based on existing data from various laboratory studies of plutonium species in aqueous solution are used to predict the speciation of this radioactive pollutant in seawater. Oxidation-reduction data for plutonium suggest that Pu(VI) should be very dominant in seawater solution compared to Pu(IV), and that Pu(III) and Pu(V) should be absent. The disproportionation reactions and the alpha reduction mechanism are probably of no consequence to the oxidation state in seawater. However, the irreversible hydrolysis of Pu4+ and the associated formation of polymeric Pu(OH)4 colloids are important mechanisms of speciation control and plutonium removal to sediments, by adsorption onto suspended matter. Stability constants for plutonium complexation with inorganic ligands in seawater suggest that Pu(VI) dissolved in seawater will be dominantly PuO2CO3OH.The theoretical predictions of plutonium speciation and behaviour in seawater are compared to the only available data on plutonium speciation in seawater (Nelson and Lovett, 1978). Good agreement between the predictions and field observations was obtained, within the limitations imposed by the scarcity of data on this subject.  相似文献

We report a simplified synthesis, and some performance characteristics, for 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HOQ) covalently bonded to a chemically resistant TosoHaas TSK vinyl polymer resin. The resin was used to concentrate trace metals from stored, acidified seawater samples collected from Jellyfish Lake, an anoxic marine lake in the Palau Islands. The Mn, Fe, and Zn profiles determined from the 8-HOQ resin extraction were similar to those determined using Chelex-100 resin. The Zn and Cd profiles did not exhibit removal by sulfide “stripping” in contrast to other anoxic marine basins. The profiles of Co and Ni also exhibited elevated concentrations in the anoxic hypolimnion. The solution speciation and saturation states for the metals were calculated using revised metal-bisulfide stability constants. The calculations suggest that the MS(HS) species dominates the solution speciation for Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Pb. Cu(I) is modeled as the CuS or Cu(HS)2 species, while Fe(II) behaves as the free Fe2+ cation. The Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Cd concentrations appeared to be at least 10-fold undersaturated, while the Fe(II), Zn, and Pb concentrations were close to saturation with respect to their metal sulfides.  相似文献

The photochemical instability of several related pteridines in seawater was investigated by aseptic incubation of solutions at 20–22°C under illumination from cool-white light of intensity 6 kerg cm−2 sec−1, and the chemical changes were spectrophotometrically monitored. All the pteridines showed markedly accelerated degradation from this illumination relative to their behaviour in total darkness.Pterin and lumazine were degraded very slowly with zero-order reaction kinetics, while the other pteridines photolysed rapidly (according to first-order kinetics) with decomposition rates increasing in the order dioxylumazine (2,4,6,7-tetrahydroxypteridine) < leucopterin < isoxanthopterin < xanthopterin < oxylumazine (2,4,6-trihydroxypteridine). Excepting leucopterin and dioxylumazine, the photolysis rates were attributable to the pH of seawater and not its salt content; this was also the case with oxylumazine which required the salt content of seawater for decomposition in darkness. Leucopterin and dioxylumazine (both 6,7-dihydroxylated pteridines) gave evidence of complexation with the major divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) of seawater, by virtue of which their photolytic degradation rates were enhanced to magnitudes obtained in pH-10 buffer without seawater. It is proposed that such complexation produces structural forms of these pteridines analogous to their normal ionic forms at pH 10–12.The photolysis of the 6-hydroxylated pteridines (xanthopterin, oxylumazine) proceeded via intermediate formation of their corresponding 7-hydroxylated derivatives (leucopterin, dioxylumazine).  相似文献

The equimolal Tris buffer (0.04 mol/kg-H2O Tris + 0.04 mol/kg-H2O Tris-HCl) prepared in synthetic seawater of salinity 35 has been shown to be stable when sealed in a borosilicate glass bottle with a greased ground-glass stopper (drift rate ≤ 0.0005 in pH per year). The error in pH of such buffers resulting from uncertainties in the preparation of such buffers is typically less than 0.002 in pH (relative to the results of DelValls and Dickson, 1998 [DelValls, T.A., Dickson, A.G., 1998. The effect of ionic interactions on the kinetics of disproportionation of HO2, and the oxidation of Fe(II) and Cu(I) has been examined. The interactions of O2 with Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater increases the lifetime by 3–5 times compared to water. The effect of OH on the oxidation of Fe(II) in water and seawater shows a second degree dependence from 5 to 45°C. The effect of salinity on the oxidation of Fe(II) was found to be independent of temperature, while the effect of temperature was found to be independent of salinity. The energy of activation for the overall rate constant was found to be 7 ± 0.5 kcal mol−1.The effect of pH, temperature, salinity and ionic composition on the oxidation of Cu(I) has also been examined. In NaCl solutions from 0.5 to 6 M, the log k for the oxidation was a linear function of pH (6–8) with a slope of 0.2 ± 0.05. The reaction was strongly dependent on the Cl concentration with variation of from 0.3 to 340 min from 0.5 to 6 M Cl. The rates of oxidation of Cu+ and CuCl0 responsible for these effects are dependent upon ionic strength. The energy of activation for the reaction was 8.5–9.9 kcal mol−1 from 0.5 to 6 M. Studies of the oxidation in various NaX salts (X = I, Br and Cl) give rates in the order Cl > Br > I as expected, due to complex formation of Cu+ with X.  相似文献

A reproducible, low-blank, isotope-dilution technique for the determination of inorganic Cr(III) and total dissolved chromium in seawater has been developed. Analysis of coastal water from Brittany, France, confirms that inorganic Cr(III) exists in excess of the thermodynamic equilibrium value calculated from the model of Elderfield (1970). A vertical profile of total chromium at 13°N on the East Pacific Rise confirms the general features of Cr behaviour: slight depletion at the surface (Cr = 2.0 nmol l−1 compared to 2.6 nmol l−1 below 1000 m) and bottom excess possibly due to Cr (III) release from sediments (up to 15.8 nmol l−1). A maximum enrichment of six times the average seawater value is obtained in hydrothermal waters. The chromium content of metalliferous sediments is mainly due to scavenging from the water column; input of chromium into the ocean through hydrothermalism is negligible.  相似文献

Analyses of the concentration product (Ca2+) × (CO32−) in the pore waters of marine sediments have been used to estimate the apparent solubility products of sedimentary calcite (KSPc) and aragonite (KSPa) in seawater. Regression of the data gives the relation In KPSPc = 1.94 × 10−3 δP − 14.59 The 2°C, 1 atm value of KSPc is, then, 4.61 × 10−7 mol2 l−2. The pressure coefficient yields a at 2°C of −43.8 cm3 atm−1. A single station where aragonite is present in the sediments gives a value of KSPa = 9.2 × 10−7 (4°C, 81 atm). The calcite data are very similar to those determined experimentally by Ingle et al. (1973) for KSPc at 2°C and 1 atm. The calculated is also indistinguishable from the experimental results of Ingle (1975) if is assumed to be independent of pressure.  相似文献
