This paper reports a study in the distribution of parameters of split shear waves excited by deep earthquakes in the Sakhalin and Hokkaido area, with the orientation of the axes of symmetry in the earth being estimated assuming a viscoelastic anisotropic model for the mantle. A mantle flow along NW 310° ± 20° has been identified beneath the Japan Sea. The flow is inclined at an angle of 20–30° relative to the horizontal plane and is consistent with the motion of the Pacific plate. Beneath the southern Sea of Okhotsk the fast a-axis [100] of olivine is oriented NE 30 ± 15°, nearly parallel to the trend of the Kuril arc, while the c-axis [001] is inclined at ~35° relative to the horizontal plane. Bearing in mind the increased heat flow in the region, we assume the development of a mantle flow along the olivine c-axis at NW 300° ± 20° and with the shear plane [010] in the conditions of partial mantle melting (the B-type LPO). The lowest anisotropy (1–2.5%) was identified beneath Sakhalin and the greatest (3–5%) beneath the Japan Sea. An increasing degree of anisotropy is also noted to occur with an increasing depth of focus (down to 350 km).  相似文献

It has been hypothesised that seismic and electrical anisotropy at the base of the lithosphere are caused by strain-induced lattice-preferred orientation (LPO) of olivine [100] axes parallel to present-day plate motion. This would imply that seismic and electrical anisotropy observations can provide geodynamicists with fundamental information for characterising mantle flow. The qualitative agreement between the fast direction of SV-waves and direction of maximum electrical conductance modelled deeper than 150 km below the North Central craton of Australia appear to support a common alignment mechanism, and the observed, anisotropic electrical conductances can be generated by hydrogen diffusivity in a water-poor (<1000 ppm H/Si) olivine mantle. A quantitative test is proposed for the hypothesis that electrical anisotropy is generated by anisotropic hydrogen diffusion rates (D) in olivine. Electrical anisotropy factors are computed using random resistor network models assuming that D[100]≈20×D[010]≈40×D[001]. Electrical and seismic anisotropies calculated from olivine LPO angular distribution functions modelled for a range of shear strains under a simple shear deformation demonstrate that the intensity of olivine [100] alignments (and associated shear strains) that would be required to explain the electrical anisotropy in the mantle below central Australia are significantly greater than predicted by Rayleigh wave anisotropies. The poor agreement between the observed electrical anisotropies and the electrical anisotropies that would be predicted from the Rayleigh wave anisotropies indicates that either (i) electrical anisotropy in the upper mantle below central Australia is not generated by hydrogen diffusivity alone or (ii) the seismic anisotropy is underestimated. The orientation of the olivine [100] axes maxima is inferred to be ∼30° rotated relative to the direction of present-day absolute plate motion (APM) that is determined relative to the hotspot reference frame (HS2-NUVEL1). Both the APM direction that is determined relative to a reference frame defined by requiring no-net rotation of the lithosphere (NNR-NUVEL1) and GPS-derived plate motion vectors fit the geophysical observations of upper mantle anisotropy better. This may support the contention that hotspots are not stationary relative to the deep mantle.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of water diffusivity in rhyolite melts over the range 650–950°C and [PT(H2O] = 700 bars is evaluated from water concentration-distance profiles measured in glass with an ion microprobe. Diffusivities are exponentially dependent on concentration over this temperature range and vary from about 10?8 cm2/s at 650°C to about 10?7 cm2/s at 950°C at 2 wt.% water. Water solubility also varies with temperature at a rate of ?0.14 wt. per 100°C increase. The avtivation energy (Ea) appears to be constant at 19 ± 1kal/mole for 1, 2,and 3 wt.% H2O. Comparison of these data with results for cation diffusion indicates that this value is a minimum Ea for diffusion of any species in a rhyolite melt.Compensation plots of log10D0 (the frequency factor) versus Ea indicate that hydrous rhyolite melts follow the same trend as anhydrous basalts. D0 increases for H2O and Ca2+ [1] as Ea decreases. This suggests that these molecules may diffuse by different mechanisms than do monovalent cations, and that hydration of the melt affects diffusion of Ca2+ and H2O differently than it does monovalent cation diffusion. The results imply that dramatic increases in cation diffusivities by hydration [1] may occur with additions of less than 1 wt.% H2O.  相似文献

Peridotite xenoliths showing unusual tabular equigranular textures (addressed as flattened tabular equigranular) were found in Neogene alkali basalts from the Bakony-Balaton Highland Volcanic Field (Western Hungary), Carpathian-Pannonian Region. The olivines have a characteristic crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) with [0 1 0]-axes perpendicular to the foliation and the [1 0 0]- and [0 0 1]-axes forming a continuous girdle in the foliation plane. Contrarily, the CPO pattern of orthopyroxene is much more scattered, although a single maximum can be observed in [0 0 1] axes subparallel to the plane of foliation. In case of olivine, the activation of (0 1 0)[1 0 0] and also probably (0 1 0)[0 0 1] is suggested. The deformation micro-mechanisms of orthopyroxenes are suggested to be a combination of intracrystalline glide on the (1 0 0)[0 0 1] system and some kind of other mechanism resulting in quite scattered patterns. We suggest that the unusual orientation patterns of olivines and orthopyroxenes are the result of the complex tectonic evolution of the region. The flattened tabular equigranular xenoliths represent a structural domain within the subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath the volcanic field with particular seismic characteristics. The occurrence of flattened domains in the upper mantle may considerably influence the percolation and residence time of the mantle melts and fluids, which could promote or prevent melt/wall-rock interaction.  相似文献

Rock masses contain ubiquitous multiscale heterogeneities, which (or whose boundaries) serve as the surfaces of discontinuity for some characteristics of the stress state, e.g., for the orientation of principal stress axes. Revealing the regularities that control these discontinuities is a key to understanding the processes taking place at the boundaries of the heterogeneities and for designing the correct procedures for reconstructing and theoretical modeling of tectonic stresses. In the present study, the local laws describing the refraction of the axes of extreme principal stresses T 1 (maximal tension in the deviatoric sense) and T 3 (maximal compression) of the Cauchy stress tensor at the transition over the elementary area n of discontinuity whose orientation is specified by the unit normal n are derived. It is assumed that on the area n of discontinuity, frictional contact takes place. No hypotheses are made on the constitutive equations, and a priori constraints are not posed on the orientation on the stress axes. Two domains, which adjoin area n on the opposite sides and are conventionally marked + and ?, are distinguished. In the case of the two-dimensional (2D) stress state, any principal stress axis on passing from domain ? to domain + remains in the same quadrant of the plane as the continuation of this axis in domain +. The sign and size of the refraction angle depend on the sign and amplitude of the jump of the normal stress, which is tangential to the surface of discontinuity. In the three-dimensional (3D) case, the refraction of axes T 1 and T 3 should be analyzed simultaneously. For each side, + and ?, the projections of the T 1 and T 3 axes on the generally oriented plane n form the shear sectors S + and S ?, which are determined unambiguously and to whose angular domains the possible directions p + and p ? of the shear stress vectors belong. In order for the extreme stress axes T 1 + ,T 3 + and T 1 ? , T 3 ? to be statically compatible on the generally oriented plane n, it is required that sectors S + and S ? had a nonempty intersection. The direction vectors p + and p ? are determined uniquely if, besides axes T 1 ? , T 3 ? and T 1 + , T 3 + , also the ratios of differential stresses R + and R ? (0 ≤ R ± ≤ 1) are known. This is equivalent to specifying the reduced stress tensors T R + and T R ? The necessary condition for tensors T R + and T R ? being statically compatible on plane n is the equality p + = p ?. In this paper, simple methods are suggested for solving the inverse problem of constructing the set of the orientations of the extreme stress axes from the known direction p of the shear stress vector on plane n and from the data on the shear sector. Based on these methods and using the necessary conditions of local equilibrium on plane n formulated above, all the possible orientations of axes T 1 + , T 3 + are determined if the projections of axes T 1 ? , T 3 ? axes on side — are given. The angle between the projections of axes T 1 + , T 1 ? and/or T 3 + , T 3 ? on the plane can attain 90°. Besides the general case, also the particular cases of the contact between the degenerate stress states and the special position of plane n relative to the principal stress axes are thoroughly examined. Generalization of the obtained results makes it possible to plot the local diagram of the orientations of axes T 1 + , T 3 + for a given sector S ?. This diagram is a so-called stress orientation sphere, which is subdivided into three pairs of areas (compression, tension, and compression-extension). The tension and compression zones cannot contain the poles of T 3 + and T 1 + axes, respectively. The compression-extension zones can contain the poles of either T 1 + or T 3 + axis but not both poles simultaneously. In the particular case when the shear stress vector has a unique direction p ? on side ?, the areas of compression-extension disappear and the diagram is reduced to a beach-ball plot, which visualizes the focal mechanism solution of an earthquake. If area n is a generally oriented plane and if the orientation of the pairs of the statically compatible axes T 1 ? , T 3 ? and T 1 + , T 3 + is specified, then, the stress values on side + are uniquely determined from the known stress values on side ?. From the value of differential stress ratio R ?, one can calculate the value of R +, and using the values of the principal stresses on side ?, determine the total stress tensor T + on side +. The obtained results are supported by the laboratory experiments and drilling data. In particular, these results disclose the drawbacks of some established notions and methods in which the possible refraction of the stress axes is unreasonably ignored or taken into account improperly. For example, it is generally misleading to associate the slip on the preexisting fault with the orientation of any particular trihedron of the principal stress axes. The reconstruction should address the potentially statically compatible principal stress axes, which are differently oriented on opposite sides of the fault plane. The fact that, based on the orientation of the intraplate principal stresses at the base of the lithosphere, one cannot make a conclusion on the active or passive influence of the mantle flows on the lithospheric plate motion is another example. The present relationships linking the stress values on the opposite sides of the fault plane on which the orientations of the principal stress axes are known demonstrate the incorrectness of the existing methods, in which the reduced stress tensors within the material domains are reconstructed without allowance for the dynamic interaction of these domains with their neighbors. In addition, using the obtained results, one can generalize the notion of the zone of dynamical control of a fault onto the case of the existence of discontinuities in this region and analyze the stress transfer across the system of the faults.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope exchange between anhydrite and water was studied from 100 to 550°C, using the partial equilibrium method. The exchange rate was extremely low in NaCl solution. In the lower-temperature range, acid solutions were used to produce sufficient reaction to determine the oxygen isotope fractionation factors. The fractionation factors obtained in the present study are definitely different from those given by Lloyd [8]. They are similar to those for the HSO4?-water system studied by Mizutani and Rafter [19], and are consistently 2‰ higher than those of the barite-water system by Kusakabe and Robinson [5]. The temperature dependence of the oxygen isotope fractionation factors was calculated by the least squares method in which the weight was taken to be inversely proportional to the experimental error. The fractionation is given by:103lnαanhydrite-water=3.21×(103/T)2?4.72Available δ18O values of natural anhydrite were used to test the validity of this expression. It is shown that this newly revised geothermometer can be successfully applied to natural hydrothermal anhydrite.  相似文献

We explain the global variation of Benioff zone seismicity with depth and the orientation of stress axes of deep and intermediate earthquakes using numerical models of subducting slabs. Models that match the seismicity and stress require a barrier to flow at the 670 km seismic discontinuity. The barrier may be a viscosity increase of at least an order of magnitude or a chemical discontinuity. Instantaneous flow is subparallel to the slabs for models with a viscosity increase but contorted for models with a chemical barrier. Log N (number of earthquakes) decreases linearly to 250–300 km depth and increases thereafter. Stress magnitude in our models shows the same pattern, in accord with experiments showing N proportional to e, with k a constant and σ stress magnitude. The models predict downdip compression in the slabs at depths below 300–400 km, as observed for earthquake stress axes.  相似文献

This paper advances new evidence for elastic anisotropy in the continental subcrustal lithosphere in southern Germany. The range of petrological models compatible with the observed azimuthal variation of seismic P-wave velocity is explored. The azimuthal distribution of amplitudes of mantle phases and the observed increase of P velocity with depth both indicate a continuation of anisotropy with depth together with an increase of preferred orientation. Even depletion of the upper mantle in basaltic components, as suggested by mantle xenoliths from various parts of Germany, cannot explain the velocity-depth and azimuthal amplitude observations without an increase of anisotropy with depth.Preferred orientation of olivine is the most likely mechanism for the observed phenomena. Its fast a-axis at the Moho level is directed towards N22.5°E. The b-axis is also required to be horizontal; i.e., the b-plane, one of the preferred glide planes of olivine, is vertical, with a strike of N22.5°E. Therefore, this preferred glide plane of olivine practically coincides with the plane of maximum horizontal shear stress deduced from fault-plane solutions of earthquakes in western Germany. This is a strong indication that the preferred orientation of olivine is formed in the recent West European crustal stress field leaking into the upper mantle. The distribution of velocities to a depth of at least 50 km requires slight horizontal rotation of the a-axis with depth by ~ 10° towards N32°E, and a change in the modal composition towards a depletion increasing with depth compatible with the composition of mantle xenoliths from western Germany. Further experiments are needed to substantiate this suggestion, which could lead to a better understanding of the interaction of crustal and upper-mantle stress-strain fields.  相似文献

—A microphysical model of seismic wave attenuation is developed to provide a physical basis to interpret temperature and frequency dependence of seismic wave attenuation. The model is based on the dynamics of dislocation motion in minerals with a high Peierls stress. It is proposed that most of seismic wave attenuation occurs through the migration of geometrical kinks (micro-glide) and/or nucleation/migration of an isolated pair of kinks (Bordoni peak), whereas the long-term plastic deformation involves the continuing nucleation and migration of kinks (macro-glide). Kink migration is much easier than kink nucleation, and this provides a natural explanation for the vast difference in dislocation mobility between seismic and geological time scales. The frequency and temperature dependences of attenuation depend on the geometry and dynamics of dislocation motion both of which affect the distribution of relaxation times. The distribution of relaxation times is largely controlled by the distribution in distance between pinning points of dislocations, L, and the observed frequency dependence of Q, Q, Q∝ωα is shown to require a distribution function of P(L)L -m with m=4-2α The activation energy of Q ?1 in minerals with a high Peierls stress corresponds to that for kink nucleation and is similar to that of long-term creep. The observed large lateral variation in Q ?1 strongly suggests that the Q ?1 in the mantle is frequency dependent. Micro-deformation with high dislocation mobility will (temporarily) cease when all the geometrical kinks are exhausted. For a typical dislocation density of ~ 108 m?2, transient creep with small viscosity related to seismic wave attenuation will persist up to the strain of ~ 10?6, thus even a small strain (~ 10?6?10?4) process such as post-glacial rebound is only marginally affected by this type of anelastic relaxation. At longer time scales continuing nucleation of kinks becomes important and enables indefinitely large strain, steady-state creep, causing viscous behavior.  相似文献

The adsorption characteristics of orthosilicate on hydrous γ-Al2O3 from dilute aqueous solution (10?4 to 10?3 M) at constant ionic strength (0.1M NaCl) was investigated in the laboratory. The extent of adsorption is affected by pH, concentration of silicate, or the relative concentration of silicate and oxide surface. With short reaction time (24 hours), adsorption is the major interfacial reaction and follows an S-type adsorption isotherm. The steepness of the S-curve isotherm is influenced by the degree of equilibrium. The slower the adsorption reaction is, the flatter the S-curve becomes. Two steps, an initial fast followed by a second slow, of silicate removal were observed. The first fast step, which lasts for about one to two hours, depends greatly on pH and has the following expressions: ?d[Si]/dt = 1.3 × 10?3 [A]2[H+]?0.5[Si]1.5; pH < 9 and ?d[Si]/dt = 4.0 × 1010 [A]2[H+][Si]1.5; pH > 9. The second slow step is a first-order form with respect to the concentration of silicate. The specific rate constant depends on pH, concentration of silicate and surface area.Specific chemical energy contributes significantly to the adsorption of silicate and a value of ??12RT was found.  相似文献

We present 9 bottom222Rn profiles measured from the western and southern Indian Ocean during the 1977–1978 GEOSECS expedition. These profiles can be grouped into three cypes: one-layer, two-layer, and irregular types. The one-layer profiles with quasi-exponential distributions allow one to estimate the apparent vertical eddy diffusivity,Kv, with a simple model. The two-layer profiles show that there is a benthic boundary layer of the order of 50–100 m in which the excess222Rn distribution shows a vertical gradient much smaller than that of the layer immediately above. Within the boundary layer, the STD potential temperature (θ) and density(σ4) profiles are practically constant, and theKv values are of the order of 1000 cm2/s. The STD profiles for the water column above the boundary layer show gradients of increasing stability, and theKv values are of the order of 100 cm2/s. Modeling of the Rn data in the water column above the boundary layer indicates that there is a transition layer which effectively reduces the penetration of excess Rn from the benthic boundary layer into the upper layer.Sarmiento et al. [10] have shown that the buoyancy gradient or stability is inversely correlated with the apparent vertical eddy diffusivity, and the resulting buoyancy flux is fairly uniform, ranging from 1 to 14 × 10?6 cm2/s3 in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, Sarmiento et al. [11] show that a much higher buoyancy flux is associated with an intensified flow of the bottom water through a passage. In the Indian Ocean basins, we have found that the buoyancy flux has a comparable range (3–14 × 10?6 cm2/s3), except for a couple of stations where both stability and apparent vertical diffusivity are higher, resulting in a much higher buoyancy flux, probably indicative of rapid bottom water flow.  相似文献

The relations between lake surface sediment diatoms and water environmental variables were revealed effectively by use of a new multivariate canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) based on 45 lakes in the Tibetan Plateau. Water depth, conductivity, Cl?, Mg2+, K+ and pH, identified from 12 contemporary water environmental variables, can significantly and independently explain the diatom distributions (p<0.05). The first two axes (λ1=0.34, λ2=0.27) capture 16.1% of the variance in the species data, and account for 57.4% of the variance in diatom-environment relationship. The deletion of redundant environmental variables and unusual samples do not influence the explanation to diatom data. The final CCA result indicates that the water depth and the salinity are the two important environmental gradients and influence the diatom distribution in the plateau lakes. The water depth correlates with axis 1, while conductivity, Cl?, Mg2+ and K+, indicating the direction of salinity changes, correlate with both of the first two axes. The definition of diatom-environment model may provide a basis for further quantitative inference on diatom-environment transfer function.  相似文献

We present the distribution of226Ra in eight vertical profiles from the eastern Pacific. The profiles are located along a meridional trend near 125°W, from 43°S to 29°N. Surface226Ra concentrations are about 7 dpm/100 kg, except for the two stations south of 30°S where the higher values are due to the Antarctic influence. Deep waters show a distinctive south-to-north increase in the226Ra content, from about 26 to 41 dpm/100 kg near the bottom. Unlike in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, the effect of226Ra injection from bottom sediments is clearly discernible in the area. The presence of this primary226Ra can be traced up to at least 1–1.5 km above the ocean floor, making this part of the sea bed among the strongest source regions for the oceanic226Ra. Numerical solutions of a two-dimensional vertical advection-diffusion model applied to the deep (1.2–4 km)226Ra data give the following set of best fits: upwelling velocity(Vz) = 3.5m/yr, vertical eddy diffusivity(Kz) = 0.6cm2/s, horizontal (north-south) eddy diffusivity(Ky) = 1 × 107cm2/s, and water-column regeneration flux of226Ra(J) = 3.3 × 10?5dpmkg?1yr?1 as an upper limit. These parametric values are in general agreement with one-dimensional (vertical) model fits for the Ra-Ba system. However, consideration of226Ra balance leads us to suspect the appropriateness of describing the vertical exchange processes in the eastern Pacific with constantVz and Kz. If future modeling is attempted, it may be preferable to treat the area as a diffusion-dominant mixing regime with depth-dependent diffusivities.  相似文献

“The Ekman Drain”: a conduit to the deep ocean for shelf material   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A long (167 days) acoustic Doppler current profiler time series from the European continental slope west of Scotland has been analysed to investigate the influence of bathymetric steering on the slope current and the extent of down-slope transport in the bottom boundary layer. Within an interior region between the surface and bottom boundary layers, the direction of the flow is found to be remarkably consistent as required by the Taylor-Proudman theorem for geostrophic flow. The mean value of this interior flow direction is taken to be the effective direction of the bathymetry in controlling the geostrophic flow and so defines the rotation of coordinates required to determine along and cross-flow transports. Within a bottom boundary layer (BBL) of thickness ~100 m, the direction of the flow was deflected increasingly to the left with the mean veering angle ~12.5° at 12 mab and a down-slope speed of 2.6 cm s?1. The corresponding integrated transport (the “Ekman drain”) had an average value of ~1.6 m2 s?1 over the full observation period. This down-slope flow was significantly correlated (at 0.1 % level), with the stress applied by the along-slope flow although with considerable scatter (r.m.s. ~1 m2 s?1) which suggests the influence of other forcing mechanisms. Combining the BBL volume transport with an estimate of the mean concentration of suspended particulate material indicates an annual down-slope flux of 3.0?±?0.6 tonnes m?1 year?1, of which ~0.36?±?0.1 tonnes m?1 year?1 is carbon. Biogeochemical measurements indicate that the carbon flux in the Ekman drain predominates over settlement of organic material through the water column over the slope and provides for relatively rapid delivery of material to deep water.  相似文献

Aftershock locations, source parameters and slip distribution in the coupling zone between the overriding North American and subducted Rivera and Cocos plates were calculated for the 22 January 2003 Tecomán earthquake. Aftershock locations lie north of the El Gordo Graben with a northwest-southeast trend along the coast and superimposed on the rupture areas of the 1932 (M w?=?8.2) and 1995 (M w?=?8.0) earthquakes. The Tecomán earthquake ruptured the northwest sector of the Colima gap, however, half of the gap remains unbroken. The aftershock area has a rectangular shape of 42?±?2 by 56?±?2?km with a shallow dip of roughly 12° of the Wadati-Benioff zone. Fault geometry calculated with the Náb??lek (1984) inversion procedure is: (strike, dip, rake)?=?(277°, 27°, 78°). From the teleseimic body wave spectra and assuming a circular fault model, we estimated source duration of 20?±?2?s, a stress drop of 5.4?±?2.5?MPa and a seismic moment of 2.7?±?.7?×?1020?Nm. The spatial slip distribution on the fault plane was estimated using new additional near field strong motion data (54?km from the epicenter). We confirm their main conclusions, however we found four zones of seismic moment release clearly separated. One of them, not well defined before, is located toward the coast down dip. This observation is the result of adding new data in the inversion. We calculated a maximum slip of 3.2?m, a source duration of 30?s and a seismic moment of 1.88?×?1020?Nm.  相似文献

It has been an enigma that in the Tieschitz, H3, and other unequilibrated chondrites the silicates show quench textures yet their metallic minerals, according to the Wood [6] model, appear to have cooled extremely slowly. In Tieschitz, spherical metallic chondrules up to 500 μm in diameter, with textures indicating an origin as liquid droplets, consist of polycrystalline intergrowths of α(kamacite), γ(taenite) and troilite. Interface Ni compositions of contiguous α (~5 wt.%) and γ (~50 wt.%) grains define equilibrium tie-line relationships in the Fe-Ni system indicating equilibration to ~350°C (620 K). Polycrystalline γ(taenite) is multi-zoned with respect to Ni and is interpreted as the relict of a primary solidification structure. A mechanism whereby Ni compositional heterogeneities were produced in γ(taenite) by the rapid, non-equilibrium cooling of FeNiS melts during chondrule formation is discussed.Comparisons with lunar metal globules indicate solidification rates for Tieschitz metallic chondrules in the range 1–106 K/s. It is suggested that before or during aggregation, sub-solidus cooling in the temperature range ~700–1400°C with cooling times of days to weeks allowed the preservation of a relict solidification structure in metallic chondrules. At a temperature of ~700°C accretion and shallow burial (1–10 m) on the surface of the Tieschitz parent body provided insulation with slower cooling required to nucleate and grow α(kamacite) from the heterogeneous γ(taenite) under equilibrium conditions by the process of solid state diffusion proposed by Wood [6]. The cooling rate (1 K/106 yr) through 500°C derived using the Wood model is shown to be an underestimate of the real cooling rate of Tieschitz metal through that temperature, since it does not take into account Ni heterogeneities produced at higher temperatures. A rough estimate of the post-accretional cooling rate is obtained from the average size of α(kamacite) grains(<100 μm) andTeqα ~ 350°C indicating a cooling rate of the order of<1K/103yr through 500°C.  相似文献

Presently available data on the reaction of SO2 with OH radicals (OH + SO2 + \(M\xrightarrow[{k_1 }]{}\) HSO3 +M) are critically reviewed in light of recent stratospheric sulfur budget calculations. These calculations impose that the net oxidation ratek of SO2 within the stratosphere should fall within the range 10?7k≤10?9, if the SO2 oxidation model for the stratospheric sulfate layer is assumed to be correct. The effective reaction rate constantk 1 * =k 1[M] at the stratospheric temperature is estimated as $$k_1^* = \frac{{(8.2 \pm 2.2) \times 10^{ - 13} \times [M]}}{{(0.79 \mp 0.34) \times 10^{ - 13} + [M]}}cm^3 /molecules sec$$ where [M] refers to the total number density (molecules/cm3). Using the above limiting values ofk 1 * , and the estimated OH density concentrations, the net oxidation rate is calculated as 3.6×10?7k≤1.3×10?8 at 17 km altitude. This indicates that the upper limit of thesek values exceeds the tolerable range imposed by the model by a factor of about four. Obviously the uncertainty of thek 1 * values and of the OH concentrations in the stratosphere is still too large to make definite conclusions on the validity of the SO2 model.  相似文献

Abstract

In a rapidly rotating, electrically conducting fluid we investigate the thermal stability of the fluid in the presence of an imposed toroidal magnetic field and an imposed toroidal differential rotation. We choose a magnetic field profile that is stable. The familiar role of differential rotation is a stabilising one. We wish to examine the less well known destabilising effect that it can have. In a plane layer model (for which we are restricted to Roberts number q = 0) with differential rotation, U = sΩ(z)1 ?, no choice of Ω(z) led to a destabilising effect. However, in a cylindrical geometry (for which our model permits all values of q) we found that differential rotations U = sΩ(s)1 ? which include a substantial proportion of negative gradient (dΩ/ds ≤ 0) give a destabilising effect which is largest when the magnetic Reynolds number R m = O(10); the critical Rayleigh number, Ra c, is about 7% smaller at minimum than at Rm = 0 for q = 106. We also find that as q is reduced, the destabilising effect is diminished and at q = 10?6, which may be more appropriate to the Earth's core, the effect causes a dip in the critical Rayleigh number of only about 0.001%. This suggests that we see no dip in the plane layer results because of the q = 0 condition. In the above results, the Elsasser number A = 1 but the effect of differential rotation is also dependent on A. Earlier work has shown a smooth transition from thermal to differential rotation driven instability at high A [A = O(100)]. We find, at intermediate A [A = O(10)], a dip in the Rac vs. Rm curve similar to the A = 1 case. However, it has Rac ≤ 0 at its minimum and unlike the results for high A, larger values of Rm result in a restabilisation.  相似文献

D/H fractionation factors between serpentine (clinochrysotile) and water were experimentally determined to be: 1000 In αser-w = 2.75 × 10 7/T2 ? 7.69 × 104/T + 40.8 in the temperature range from 100 to 500°C. The present results do not support the semi-empirical fractionation factors employed by Wenner and Taylor [1] for the interpretation of δD values of natural serpentines. About 100 serpentines from the Japanese Islands have δD values from ?110 to ?40‰ SMOW, with antigorite being from ?40 to ?60‰. The results are in accord with the two conclusions by Wenner and Taylor [1,2], that is, the presence of a latitude ?δD correlation and the more uniform and higher δD values of antigorite than chrysotile and lizardite.According to the present fractionation factors, almost none of the continental lizardite-chrysotile serpentines could have formed at a temperature below 500°C under equilibrium with fluids of δD values similar to the present-day local meteoric waters. The fluid responsible for oceanic serpentinization could be either a mixture of oceanic and magmatic water or oceanic water alone. However, full interpretation of the δD values of natural serpentines should wait until kinetic behaviors of hydrogen isotopes in serpentinization are better understood.  相似文献

Spectra of internal friction between 2 and 8 Hz were studied in a single crystal of enstatite, in a polycrystal of synthetic forsterite and in several samples of natural peridotite. Measurements of Q?1 and μ were performed in vacuum (10?6 torr), from room temperature up to 1100°C. For these experimental conditions no peak was observed in the polycrystalline undeformed forsterite, but the background attenuation irregularly increased from 5 · 10?3 to 10?2.A peak Q?1 = 7 · 10?2 appears in a deformed peridotite at 930°C. It is reduced of 60% after 5 h of annealing at 1100°C. But the background attenuation persists. In the single crystal of enstatite, a peak is observed at 760°C (Q?1 = 6 · 10?2). A mechanism involving dislocations is suggested as a possible explanation for the peak obtained with the peridotite samples. If this hypothesis is right, the observed effect would be diffusion controlled so that one can expect pressure to translate it towards higher temperature. This mechanism could therefore appear in the upper mantle. Background attenuation could be the result of intergranular thermal losses.  相似文献
