Approximately one thousand drilled wells were investigated for their natural radioactivity. The determinations of 238U, 234U, 226Ra and 222Rn from 310 samples showed a high state of radioactive disequilibrium between the members of the uranium series present in water. The 238U226Ra activity ratio usually fell in the range 1–20 and the 238U222Rn activity ratio in the range 1–20 × 10?4, the highest activity ratios being from samples with an elevated uranium content. The 234U238U activity ratio varied between 0.76 and 4.67, the most frequent values showing a 60% excess of 234U in the samples. Most of the 234U238U activity ratios near unity were found in samples with a high uranium content. Several drilled wells with anomalously high uranium contents were found in southern Finland. The average 226Ra and 222Rn contents of these wells were not exceptionally high, which suggests high mobility of uranium in groundwater from the areas involved.  相似文献

The 3He4He ratios measured in 27 Southern Africa diamond stones, four from Premier Mine and the rest of unidentified origin, range from 4.2 × 10?8 to 3.2 × 10?4, with three stones above 1 × 10?4. We conclude that the initial helium isotopic ratio (3He4He)0 in the earth was significantly higher than that of the planetary helium-A (3He4He = 1.42 × 10?4), but close to the solar helium (3He4He ? 4 × 10?4).The apparent K-Ar ages for the twelve diamonds of unidentified origin show enormously old age, indicating excess argon-40. 3He4He evolution in diamonds suggests that the diamonds with the high 3He4He ratio (>2 × 10?4) may be as old as the earth.Noble gas elemental abundance in the diamonds relative to the air noble gas abundance shows monotonie decrease with a decreasing mass number. This paper discusses the implications of these observations on the early solar system and the origin of diamonds.  相似文献

The Roving Automated Rare Gas Analysis (RARGA) lab of Berkeley's Physics Department was deployed in Yellowstone National Park for a 19 week period commencing in June, 1983. During this time 66 gas and water samples representing 19 different regions of hydrothermal activity within and around the Yellowstone caldera were analyzed on site. Routinely, the abundances of five stable noble gases and the isotopic compositions of He, Ne, and Ar were determined for each sample. In a few cases the isotopes of Kr and Xe were also determined and found to be of normal atmospheric constitution.Correlated variations in the isotopic compositions of He and Ar can be explained within the precision of the measurements by mixing of only three distinct components. The first component is of magmatic origin and is enriched in the primordial isotope 3He with 3He4He ≥ 16 times the air value. This component also contains radiogenic 40Ar and possible 36Ar with 40Ar36Ar ≥ 500, resulting in a 3He36Ar ratio ≥ 41,000 times the air value. The second component is assumed to be purely radiogenic 4He and 40Ar (41He401Ar = 4.08 ± .33). This component is the probable carrier of observed excesses of 211Ne, attributed to the α,n reaction on 18O. Its radiogenic character implies a crustal origin in U. Th, and Krich aquifer rocks. The third component, except for possible mass fractionation, is isotopically indistinguishable from the noble gases in the atmosphere. This component originates largely from infiltrating run-off water saturated with atmospheric gases. In addition to exhibiting nucleogenic 211Ne, Ne data show anomalies in the ratio 20Ne20Ne, which correlate roughly with the 21Ne22Ne anomalies for the most part, but not as would occur from simple mass fractionation. Some exaggerated instances of the 20Ne22Ne anomaly occur which could be explained by combined mass fractionation of Ne and Ar isotopes to a severe degree coupled with remixing with normally isotopic gases. Otherwise exotic processes have to be invoked to explain the 20Ne data.Relative abundances of the non-radiogenic and non-nucleogenic noble gases (22Ne, 36Ar, 84Kr, and 132Xe) are highly variable but strongly correlated. High Xe/Ar ratios are always accompanied by low Ne/ Ar ratios and vice versa. Except for water from the few cold (T < 20°C) springs analyzed, none of the samples have relative abundances consistent with air saturated water and the observed variations are not readily explained by the distillation of air saturated water. In characterizing each area of hydrothermal activity by the highest 3He4He ratio found for that area, we find that within the caldera this parameter is somewhat uniform at ~7 ± 1 times the air value. There are exceptions, most notably at Mud Volcano, an area located along a crest of recent and rapid uplift. Here the maximum 3He4He ratio is ~ 16 times the air value. Also noteworthy is Gibbon Basin which is in the vicinity of the most recent rhyolitic volcanism and exhibits a 3He4He ratio ~ 13 times the air value. Immediately outside the caldera the maximum sol3He4He ratio decreases rapidly to values < ~3 times the air value.  相似文献

Silicate and troilite from IAB iron meteorites were dated by the 40Ar-39Ar technique. Silicate from four IAB meteorites gave well-defined apparent-age plateaus which accounted for 71–99% of the released 39Ar. At low temperatures, only Copiapo showed appreciable loss of 40Ar, while Mundrabilla and Woodbine released excess 40Ar. The plateau ages are: 4.50 Byr for Copiapo, 4.57 Byr for Mundrabilla, 4.57 Byr for Woodbine, 4.54 Byr for unetched Pitts, and 4.57 Byr for etched Pitts; the 1σ error in each case is ± 0.03 Byr. A poorly-defined age plateau for Landes gives an age of 4.48 Byr, while the total K-Ar age (4.55 Byr) is significantly higher. The average (40Ar/36Ar)trapped ratio for all silicate samples is 0.4 ± 0.4.Simple and undisturbed K-Ar systems are rare for meteorites, yet it appears to be a common feature for IAB silicates. In addition, plateau ages of IAB silicates are as old or older than the mean age of unshocked chondrites (4.47 Byr).Troilite samples yielded complex patterns which were evaluated via 40Ar/36Ar vs 39Ar/36Ar plots. Data for Pitts troilite are consistent with silicate and troilite retaining Ar at about the same time initially, but then 4.25 Byr ago nearly all the Ar in troilite was redistributed. The 700–1000°C points for Mundrabilla troilite define a line which gives an age of 6.2 Byr and (40Ar/36Ar)trapped = 42. This line may be an artifact, perhaps produced by homogenization of Ar and K.Approximate estimates of cosmic-ray exposure ages are 240 Myr for Landes, 130 Myr for Copiapo, 190 Myr for Woodbine, 170 Myr for Mundrabilla troilite, and 60 Myr for Pitts troilite. The I-Xe study of these same samples revealed a good correlation between well-defined I-Xe ages of silicates and Ni contents of metal (Niemeyer, 1979). The poorer resolution of the 40Ar-39Ar technique hampers a similar evaluation; nevertheless, plateau ages of the silicates suggest a systematic trend with Ni contents.  相似文献

The isotopic composition of Ag and the concentration of Ag and Pd have been determined in Canyon Diablo (IA), Grant (IIIB), Hoba, Santa Clara, Tlacotepec and Warburton Range (IVB), Piñon and Deep Springs (anom.). Troilite from Grant and Santa Clara have also been analyzed. All of these meteorites, with the exception of Canyon Diablo, give 107Ag109Ag in the metal phase that is greater than the terrestrial value with the enrichments of 107Ag ranging from ~2% to 212%. These data show that Ag of anomalous isotopic composition is common to all IVB and anomalous meteorites. The results on Grant suggest that the anomalies may be widespread including more common meteorite groups. There is a general correlation of 107Ag109Ag with PdAg except for the data from FeS of Santa Clara. It is concluded that the excess 107Ag is the result of decay of 107Pd, a nuclide that is extinct at present with an abundance of 107Pd108Pd of about 3 × 10?5. The troilite in Grant exhibits normal 107Ag109Ag to within errors, a high Ag concentration and a low ratio of 108Pd109Ag ~0.17. Grant metal has 107Ag109Ag that is ~2% greater than normal and a high ratio of 108Pd109Ag ~ 103. The data from Grant appear to represent a 107Pd-107Ag isochron and indicate that the cooling rate at elevated temperatures was sufficiently rapid to preserve substantial isotopic differences between metal and troilite. Troilite in Santa Clara was found to contain Ag with a very high 107Ag109Ag ratio (108% above normal), an Ag concentration only a factor of three above the metal and a high value of 108Pd109Ag ~1.3 × 104. The troilite has a higher 107Ag109Ag than the metal. These data are not compatible with a simple model of in situ decay and subsequent local Ag redistribution between metal and troilite during cooling. These data suggest that Ag in Santa Clara and possibly other IVB meteorites is made up of almost pure 107Ag produced from 107Pd decay and 109Ag produced by nuclear reactions with only a small amount of “normal” Ag. This indicates an intense energetic particle bombardment history in the early solar system (~1020 p/m2) which occurred after the formation of small planetary bodies. We infer that a T-Tauri activity by the early sun contributed to some late stage “nucleosynthesis” and the heating of a dust cloud. In addition, implications on the early thermal evolution of iron meteorites are presented based on 107Pd decay and models of the cooling history.  相似文献

Al26 and noble gas contents of 6 ordinary chondrites with He3Ne21 ratios above 6.0 or below 4.0 are used to infer the variability of the production rates of He3 and Ne21 (PHe3 and PNe21). The ratio of the observed Al26 content to a calculated, normal value is taken as a measure of the change of PNe21 from its normal value. The corresponding change in PHe3 is then computed from the observed He3Ne21 ratio and an average value of PHe3.According to these calculations which exclude orbital effects, PHe3 will be near the average value in meteorites with high He3Ne21 ratios, while PNe21 will be about 30 per cent below normal. In meteorites with low He3Ne21 ratios, PHe3 may be depressed by as much as 25 per cent from normal while PNe21 may be 15–20 per cent above the average.  相似文献

The solution of radioelements and radiogenic 4He by groundwaters in fractured rocks is dependent upon the radioelement distribution in the rock matrix and the extent of the rock-water interface. The 234U238U activity ratio and the dissolved U, Rn and He contents of such groundwaters respond to changes in the flow regime with time. Although 234U238U activity ratios change with groundwater residence time as a consequence of 234Th-recoil induced solution of 234U, the activity ratio is strongly influenced by the U distribution within fractures, by the extent of the rock-water interface and by the amount of 238U in solution. A model for the quantitative evaluation of these effects is presented.Groundwaters from depths up to 880 m in the Stripa granite have variable dissolved uranium contents and 234U238U activity ratios. The uranium geochemistry is primarily determined by variations in flow path rather than by groundwater age.Dissolved radiogenic 4He in the groundwaters increases with their depth of origin, and is dependent upon the U content of the granite and upon its fracture porosity. It increases with groundwater residence time but movement of 4He by diffusion and transport processes make the actual groundwater age indeterminate.  相似文献

He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe concentrations and isotopic abundances were measured in three bulk grain size fractions prepared from sample L-16-19, No. 120 (C level, 20–22 cm depth) returned by the Luna 16 mission. The expected anticorrelation between the concentrations of trapped solar wind noble gases and grain size is observed. Elemental abundances of solar wind trapped noble gases are similar to those previously found in corresponding grain size fractions of the Apollo 11 and 12 fines. The trapped ratio 4He20Ne varies in the soils from different lunar maria due to diffusion losses. A rough correlation of 4He20Ne with the proportion of ilmenite in these samples is apparent. The elemental and isotopic ratios of the surface correlated noble gases in Luna 16 resemble those previously found in Apollo fines. Based on 21Ne, 78Kr and 126Xe a cosmic ray exposure age of 360 my was determined. This age is similar to those obtained for the soils from other lunar maria.  相似文献

The concentrations of uranium. 226Ra and 222Rn were determined in 308 drilled and 58 dug wells in the Helsinki region. The study area was about 400 km2 and geologically highly variable, with granites, amphibolites and migmatites the dominant rocks. The radioactivity of water in the dug wells was on a “normal” level, but in numerous drilled wells it was anomalously high. In 14 drilled wells the concentration of uranium exceeded 1000 μg/l, the highest concentration being 14,870 μg/l. For 222Rn the maximum concentration was 880,000 pCi/l. The 226Ra228Ra and 230Th232Th activity ratios showed the isotopes of the uranium series to be dominant in the study area. A state of disequilibrium between 238U and 234U was very common in the samples. The 234U238U activity ratios varied in the range 1.0–4.0 regardless of the amount of uranium in the water. The conclusion can be drawn from the isotopic data that the high radioactivity of water is in some cases caused by primary uranium mineralizations, but mostly by uranium deposited in fissures of the bedrock. The paper includes a summary of the results of two studies carried out between 1967 and 1977.  相似文献

Both the dissociation and evaporation of troilite. heated to its melting point in vacuo, are isotopically selective. The elemental sulphur from the dissociation of troilite has a 34S32S ratio which is 13.0‰ less than that of the undissociated material while the 34S32S ratio in evaporated troilite is 5.4‰ less than that of the residual material. The two processes occur simultaneously and the isotopic variations during the course of the reaction are in accord with those for a branched reaction where the unreacted material remains isotopically well-mixed, as in a Rayleigh distillation process. This isotopic selectivity must be taken into account, along with that in other lunar surface processes, when considering the heavy isotope enrichment of sulphur in lunar soils.  相似文献

15 ordinary chondrites for which unusually high spallogenic Ne22Ne21 or He3Ne21 ratios had been reported and one meteorite with marked shock characteristics were selected in order to investigate the relations between Ne22Ne21 ratios, Al26 contents and depth. We report Al26 and K contents of 13 samples from 11 of these and-noble gas contents of 30 samples from all of these stones.A decrease in the Al26 production rate accompanies the increase of Ne22Ne21 towards the pre-atmospheric surface: Alobs26Alcalc26 = 3.2?2.0 Ne22Ne21 for 1.08 ≤ Ne22Ne21 ≤ 1.2. Large deviations from this relationship may indicate that a meteorite experienced an abnormal flux of cosmic rays. For Ne2Ne21 > 1.2 this trend continues but the data scatter more, probably because of the steadily increasing influence of pre-atmospheric size. Ne22Ne21 ratios increase most rapidly in the outermost few centimeters according both to a plot of Ne22Ne21 vs (recovered mass)13 and to track studies. The increase seems to derive from the enhanced importance of nuclear reactions on Si.Ne22Ne21 < 1.08 defines a region where the Al26 production rates are less sensitive to depth and vanish in the limit of large shielding; the weak correlation between Ne22Ne21 and Al26 in this region rules out the use of the Ne22Ne21 ratio as a basis for a shielding correction to Al26.  相似文献

The relative abundance of 226Ra and 228Ra were determined in the groundwater from 125 drilled wells containing from < 0.1 to 51.3 pCi/l of 226Ra. The determination of 228Ra was carried out with a liquid scintillation counter by measuring only the weakly energetic β particles emitted from 228Ra. Thus the interference from the daughter nuclides of 226Ra was avoided, without specific separation of 228Ac. The direct measurement of 228Ra made the method decisively simpler and faster in terms of the chemistry involved. The concentration of 228Ra was found to be independent of the amount of 226Ra present in the samples. The concentrations of 228Ra were nearly the same over the whole range of 226Ra concentrations and the average sol226Ra228Ra ratio sharply increased as the 226Ra content of water increased. The 226Ra228Ra ratio in the drilled wells varied from 0.3 to 26. Abnormally high 226Ra228Ra ratios were found in areas with known uranium deposits as well as in several drilled wells at other locations. The abnormally high 226Ra228Ra ratios present in groundwater suggest that the radioactivity anomaly is caused by uranium deposits and not by common rocks. In samples with a low radioactivity level the average 226Ra228Ra ratio was slightly below unity, corresponding to the typical U/Th ratio of granite, the most common kind of rock in the study area. The samples from the rapakivi area proved to be exceptional in that they had a low 226Ra228Ra ratio independent of the concentration of 226Ra.  相似文献

The inert gases have been measured in six size fractions covering the range below 500 μm, in a single feldspathic fragment weighing 523 μg, and in an agglutinate particle weighing 465 μg. The two size fractions between 125 and 250 μm as well as 250 and 500 μm were separated into magnetic and non-magnetic portions, which were measured separately. Like the Apollo and Luna 16 fines, the terra fines represented by Luna 20 are very rich in trapped solar-wind gases, but they contain relatively less He4 and Ne20, which is revealed by their average He4Ne20 ratio of 35 and Ne20Ar36 ratio of 2.9. Obviously the terra materials are less retentive for solar-wind He and Ne than typical mare fines such as 10084. Whether this is due to the relatively small TiO2 or the relatively large plagioclase content of the former is not resolved. (Ar36Kr84)trapped and (Ar36Xe132)trapped ratios are relatively large; the average values are 2800 and 14400, respectively. The apparent Ne21 radiation ages of all the size fractions are in the range 209–286 × 106 yr; the average is 260 × 106 yr. This is in the range of values known for the Apollo and Luna 16 fines. The feldspathic fragment has a much greater apparent Nec21 age of 780 × 106 yr. The Ar40-Ar36 systematic reveals the presence of two Ar40 components, because Ar40 = (1.41 ± 0.076)Ar36 + (0.490 ± 0.130) × 10?4 (cm3 STP/g). The Ar40Ar36 slope of 1.41 is not inconsistent with an origin of the sample from a relatively old terra region.  相似文献

Analytical techniques have been developed for using a secondary ion mass spectrometer, the ion microprobe mass analyzer (IMMA), to determine, in situ, 207Pb206Pb and U/Pb ages on approximately 10-μm areas of individual mineral phases containing relatively abundant radiogenic Pb isotopes. Standard samples of known age and U, Th and Pb contents, together with the Andersen-Hinthorne local thermal equilibrium (LTE) model for predicting ionization parameters are used to establish a semi-empirical relationship for correcting observed U/Pb intensities to atom ratios. Measurements of isotope standards show that mass fractionation corrections are not required and that the accuracy and precision of analysis are generally limited by Poisson counting statistics. Many U-rich accessory minerals yield spectra which consist only of Pb at masses 204, 206, 207 and 208; thus the measurement of 207Pb206Pb ages is accomplished by simply measuring the intensities of these peaks and the background. An excellent correspondence of the ages determined using the IMMA with those from more conventional techniques is demonstrated for terrestrial, lunar and meteoritic phases. For example, the following 207Pb206Pb ages were obtained from polished thin sections of crystalline lunar samples: 10047, 3.75 ± 0.05 (2σ) Ga; 14310, 3.96 ± 0.03 Ga; and 15555, 3.36 ± 0.06 Ga. From small U-rich phases in CaAl-rich inclusions in the Allende carbonaceous chondrite, seven 207Pb206Pb ages were obtained, averaging 4.60 ± 0.09 (2σ) Ga.A method of correcting low-resolution Pb-isotope data for molecular ion interferences in zircon and baddeleyite is presented and shown to be practical through the analysis of terrestrial and lunar samples.  相似文献

We describe the analytical techniques developed for the precise measurement of the titanium isotope abundances using a TiO+ ion beam. Terrestrial, lunar, and bulk meteorite samples yield identical results. Using a normalization to 46Ti48Ti for mass dependent isotope fractionation, we obtain the normal Ti composition: 46Ti48Ti = 0.108548; 47Ti48Ti = 0.099315 ± 0.000005; 49Ti48Ti = 0.074463 ± 0.000004; 50Ti48Ti = 0.072418 ± 0.000004 (2σ grand mean), taking 18O16O = 0.002045 and 17O16O = 0.00037. Measurements on thirteen coarse-grained and fine-grained Ca-Al-Ti-rich inclusions from the Allende and Leoville meteorites show the presence of widespread, significant, nonlinear isotope anomalies in the Ti isotopes which were not used for normalization. The data require the addition of at least three exotic components. The distinct correlation of non-linear effects for the most neutron-rich isotopes of Ca and Ti and the absence of substantial effects at 46Ca in the FUN samples EK-1-4-1 and C-1 indicate that the effects reflect neutron-rich equilibrium or quasi-equilibrium nucleosynthetic processes in the outer layers of a supernova core. The results on Ca and Ti in conjunction with the isotopic effects on other elements (Mg, Sr, Ba, Nd, Sm) show that the samples represent mixtures of different nucleosynthetic components from distinctive processes (‘e’, ‘r’, ‘p’) which do not appear to be related to processes in the same stellar sites.  相似文献

Metal and silicate portions from 13 mesosiderites, one pallasite, Bencubbin (“unique”) and Udei Station (‘iron with silicate inclusions’) have been analysed for their content of He, Ne and Ar; in most cases 36Cl could be determined as well. 36Cl-36Ar cosmic ray exposure ages fall between 10 and 160 Myr. Half of the metal samples show a deficit of spallogenic 3He (up to 30%) which we ascribe to a loss of tritium. The observed depletion of 3He in the silicates is correlated with their mineralogical composition: feldspar has lost its 3He in all cases, pyroxene definitely in one and possibly in five others, while olivine has been affected in only two meteorites. The thermal histories during their exposure to the cosmic radiation have been different for different meteoroids. Nevertheless, with the exception of Veramin, the data are compatible with the assumption of a continuous diffusion loss during a considerable fraction of the exposure era. For Veramin, however, an episodic event late in the exposure history is required. The exceptionally high 39Ar36Cl ratio in the metal, which is due to a high 39Ar activity, indicates that the event occurred during the last 500,000 years or so and resulted in an extremely excentric orbit (large aphelion).Production rates of 38,39Ar from Ca and 21,22Ne from Mg are given. The ratio P38CaP21Mg is close to unity. The ratios P38CaP38Fe vary between 20 and 50, and are not correlated with the absolute production rate of 38Ar from metal. The 22Ne21Ne production ratio from Mg is found to be close to but below unity.Of the mesosiderites only Veramin shows unambiguous evidence for primordial rare gases with larger amounts and a higher 20Ne36Ar ratio in the olivine, suggesting in situ fractionation to have at least been partly responsible for the abundance pattern found. Bencubbin contains large amounts of strongly fractionated primordial gases, but again part of the fractionation may have occurred in situ. Udei Station shows an excess of (3.5 ± 0.6) × 10?10 cm3 STP 129Xe/g in the non-magnetic portion.  相似文献

A black inclusion from the Krymka LL3 chondrite was analyzed for 20 trace elements and five noble gases, by radiochemical neutron activation and mass spectrometry. The trace element pattern somewhat resembles that of C1 or C2 chondrites, but with several unique features. Elements of nebular condensation T ? 1000 K (U, Re, Os, Ir, Ni, Pd, Au, Sb and Ge) are essentially undepleted, as in C1 chondrites, but ReIr is 1.49 × higher than the characteristic Cl value. Among elements condensing below 1000 K, Cs, Se, Te, and In are depleted to approximately C2 levels (~0.6 × C1), whereas Ag, Bi, Tl are enriched to ~ 1.6 × C1. Such enrichments are thought to be characteristic of late nebular condensates. The noble-gas pattern also is unique. Gas contents are higher than in C1s, by factors of 2.6 to 19 for Ne through Xe. The Ar36Xe132 ratio of 500 is higher than mean values for C1s or C2s (109 or 89) and exceeds even the highest value seen in C3Os, 420, whereas the He4Ne20 ratio of 62 is much lower than the values for C1s and C2s (200–370). The Xe129Xe132 and Xe136Xel32 ratios of 1.040 and 0.320 resemble those of C1 chondrites, and seem to imply typical proportions of radiogenic Xe129 and ‘fissiogenic’ xenon. It appears that the inclusion represents a new primitive meteorite type, similar to C-chondrites, but probably a late condensate from a region of higher nebular pressure.  相似文献
