The transformation conditions of oil hydrocarbons in water are considered for the case of Karkinitskii Bay, the Black Sea, where gas deposits have been developed actively in recent years and oil product pollution of marine environment has been recorded repeatedly. Data on measured oil hydrocarbon concentrations, their input into the northwestern part of the Black Sea, and experimental estimates of oil decomposition in the marine environment are presented. The biotransformation conditions of oil hydrocarbons are simulated by reproducing the biochemical activity of microflora and effecting substrate consumption processes, metabolic product excretions, and biomass decay. These processes maintain the biogenic substance turnover in water environment. The calculations are based on the morphometric characteristics of Karkinitskii Bay, and mean long-term data on the monthly dynamics of marine environmental characteristics (temperature, light intensity, transparency, atmospheric precipitation, and the characteristics of water regime and Danube runoff). A check calculation was performed to reproduce the concentration dynamics of biogenic substances and oil products with allowance made for the effect of river runoff and background pollution of the marine environment. The numerical scenarios take into account the marine environmental pollution conditions (an immediate discharge of 1000, 500, or 200 t of oil products per week) in winter, spring, summer, and autumn. The obtained model estimates of the rates of oil product decomposition and oxygen consumption are shown to agree well with experimental data. The time required for the concentration of oil products to reach the MAC after pollution of the marine environment is estimated.  相似文献

The results of monitoring performed by Southern Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (YugNIRO) in 1990–1998 in the course of dredging operations with dumping in the Black Sea of soils dredged in Kerch Strait are analyzed. The study covered the soil physical properties and particle size distribution; the extent of the soil pollution by heavy metals, oil products, and organochlorine compounds; the amounts of such pollutants delivered into the sea with these soils; the extent of pollution of water and bottom sediment in the zone of soil dumping offshore Kerch Strait. The amounts of pollutants entering the Black Sea as a result of soil dumping are compared with those entering the sea from other pollutant sources, and the extent of environmental pollution in the dumping zone is compared with the background level of the sea pollution. The admissible rates of soil dumping are estimated, and potential consequences of this process are predicted.  相似文献

The conditions of transformations of biogenic substances and the redistribution of their concentrations in the shelf water of Sakhalin Island are studied. Preliminary works have given the results for the water area of La Perouse Strait and Aniva Bay (the Sea of Okhotsk), while this paper gives such results for Tatar Strait (the Sea of Japan). Three electronic instruments of oceanographic studies are applied: an adapted version of Bergen Oceanic Model (for the reconstruction of the space and time distribution of seawater temperature, salinity, and density; the circulation intensity of water masses; and water exchange parameters with nearby water areas and within the strait); GIS “Sakhalin Shelf” (for the reconstruction of annual variations in thermohaline characteristics on a standard grid and horizons of oceanographic stations, and the parameters of the aquatic environment); hydroecological CNPSi-model (for studying the annual dynamics of biogenic element compounds, the biomasses, biohydrochemical activity and bioproduction of microorganisms—bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton, taking part in transformation of biogenic substances and petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as the internal fluxes of biogenic substances governed by the activity of microorganisms and the external load on the marine ecosystem). The results of modeling the spatial transport of biogenic substances through the outer boundaries of Tatar Strait water area and the boundaries of the three areas identified within it are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Mathematical simulation is used to study the biotransformation conditions of compounds of organogenic elements (C, N, P, Si) and oil hydrocarbons in the water of southeastern Sakhalin shelf. The input data for calculations were evaluated with the use of Sakhalin Shelf GIS or taken from the reference literature and materials of expedition studies. The values of water discharges through the boundaries of the zones chosen within the shelf water area and through the interface with the Sea of Okhotsk were derived from the characteristics of currents estimated by means of Bergen University oceanic model based on normal long-term monthly thermohaline parameters obtained from the Sakhalin Shelf GIS. The intraannual variations of the concentrations of organic and mineral compounds of C, N, P, and Si, as well as oil hydrocarbons because of biotransformation of substances by organisms of the community (bacteria, phytoand zooplankton) were evaluated in calculations with CNPSi-model. The results of calculations, revealing the features of the dynamics of substances, the biomass of organisms, and their activity in matter biotransformations were analyzed.  相似文献

Surveys of fish larvae and oceanographic conditions were conducted along transects across the shelf break region in the East China Sea (ECS) in May 2001. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution and assemblages of fish larvae across the shelf break region and their relationships to mesoscale hydrographic features. There was a warm surface streamer from the Kuroshio which extended toward the shelf region of the ECS; concurrently, we observed the intrusion of the less saline shelf water into the subsurface layer towards the offshore. In all 66 taxa (65 families and 1 order) of larvae were collected by oblique net tows using a bongo net, the larval fish density and number of families sampled were lower in the low-temperature area. Based on cluster analysis and environmental factor, two larval fish assemblages were identified: off-shelf/Kuroshio and shelf break. In shelf break assemblage, Auxis spp. and Diaphus spp. were abundant in the warm surface streamer. In contrast, Maurolicus japonicus, Synagrops spp., Bregmaceros sp. and Champsodon spp. were found in the off-shelf region where the offshore intrusion of less-saline water occurred. This different pattern of the horizontal distribution would reflect vertical distribution of the larvae in the water column. Moreover, copepod nauplii density was higher in the upper layer of the shelf region. Thus, dynamic interactions between the Kuroshio and shelf waters at the frontal boundary are concluded to potentially affect larval fish transport and prey availability.  相似文献

The concentrations and the elemental and biochemical composition of dissolved and particulate organic matter (OM) characteristic of southern and Arctic seas are presented. The rate of OM transformation in the production–decomposition cycle and that of the phosphate cycle are estimated from the activity of the redox enzymes of the electron-transport system and that of phosphatase. Carbohydrates and protein are shown to be the main biochemical components in the water of all the seas under study in dissolved and particulate OM, respectively. The contribution of carbohydrates to particulate OM under the conditions of intense primary production is demonstrated to be comparable to that of protein. High concentrations of lipids are shown to be characteristic of the coastal ecosystems in the middle Caspian Sea and northwestern shelf of the Black Sea because of severe pollution in these areas. It is noted that at higher trophic levels, the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea intensely assimilates allochthonous OM, and that the Black Sea ecosystem transfers considerable amounts of OM to the hydrogen sulfide zone.  相似文献

Trends in mariculture development in Russia are studied. Global experience in controlling the after-effects of fish farm operation for the marine environment are analyzed. Statistical procesing of the data of field oceanographic surveys, carried out in 1957–1989 in a one-mile coastal zone in the Eastern Black Sea, was implemented. Results of studying natural factors determining the input of organic pollutants and the rate of their biogeochemical transformation, as well as the conditions of sediment accumulation and water aeration in the Russian part of the Black Sea coast were systematized. It was found that powerful natural self-purification mechanisms of aquatic environment act along the North Caucasian coast of the Black Sea. The conclusion on almost complete environmental safety of a marine underwater fish farm, which is under construction in the Sochi Region (Khosta Settl.) was made. Attention is attracted to the need to take into account the high hydrodynamic activity in the investigated region in the process of fixing keepnets on anchors while anchoring the fish farm.  相似文献

This study aims to examine the changing patterns of Changjiang material fluxes, which are influenced by anthropogenic activities, and the resultant modifications to the coastal and shelf oceanographic conditions, and to propose future research about the effect of these changes on the estuarine and shelf ecosystem. Within the catchment basin of the Changjiang River, the construction of more than 48,000 dams has caused significant sediment discharge reduction, together with modifications to the timing of seasonal freshwater discharge. In the future, the mean freshwater discharge will decrease following the completion of the water-diverting project for water supply to northern China. At the same time, the riverine nutrient loadings (N and P) have increased due to the extensive use of chemical fertilizers and the large discharge of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage. These changes are modifying the oceanographic conditions of the estuarine and shelf waters. The flushing time for the river water becomes longer in wet seasons but shorter in dry seasons. An increase in salinity can be expected after the completion of the water-diverting project. Nutrient concentrations will be enhanced in the shelf waters. In contrast to the decrease in the suspended sediment concentration of the river water, field measurements have not shown well-defined patterns of changes within the estuary; nevertheless, net sediment accumulation and carbon burial rates would be reduced in the deltaic areas because of the reduced sediment discharge. Finally, increase in the nutrient input appears to enhance the primary production in the East China Sea region, which, in turn, may enhance the fishery catch.  相似文献

Princess Charlotte Bay, located on the northern Great Barrier Reef, is an environment of terrigenous and carbonate deposition. The dynamics on this shelf are controlled by the Great Barrier Reef at the edge of the shelf, and the mid-shelf, shore-normal reefs. This study examines the dynamics during the dry season, with six time-series records from instrumented tripod deployments and numerous hydrographic stations.The shallow nearshore waters and the estuaries prove to be the sites where most active sediment resuspension and transport takes place. Sediment resuspension is effected primarily by waves in the nearshore, and channeling of tidal currents in the estuaries. Bedload transport did not occur during this study, mainly because current velocities were too low. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) transport in the bay is governed by tides and winds. Strong tidal flow imparts a strong offshore component to the transport, and strong southeast winds impart an alongshore component that transports SPM out of the bay to the northwest. Rattlesnake Channel, east of Princess Charlotte Bay, is another route by which SPM leaves the bay. Flow through this channel is predominantly tidal, with ebb waters (leaving Princess Charlotte Bay) carrying higher SPM concentrations than flood waters.SPM flux in the nearshore was an order of magnitude higher than at offshore stations, with highest fluxes generally occurring at times of sustained southeast winds. Transect data show that SPM drops to average bay values in water 11 m deep, indicating most SPM is transported in nearshore waters.  相似文献

The dynamics of concentrations of oil products spilled into the aquatic ecosystem as a result of accidents in the Kerch Strait is discussed. Provision is made for the analysis of the results of long-term monitoring and for the revealing of differences in concentrations and distribution of oil hydrocarbons in the Sea of Azov and in the Black Sea after emergency spills. The available information was used to outline the course of events that led to such redistribution of spilled mazut in marine ecosystems.  相似文献

The paper presents data on pollutant input into and the state of biota in Ussuri Bay—the largest inner water area of Peter the Great Bay (the Sea of Japan), which is of significance for fishery and recreation. The study revealed negative dynamics in pollutant input over the past 15 years, reversible changes in the structural-functional characteristics of communities and molecular biomarkers in regional indicator species in most parts of the bay. Areas with heaviest pollution and water toxicity for biota are identified.  相似文献

Beached bird surveys provide an important tool for monitoring the level of oil pollution at sea, which is the most significant observable cause of death for a large number of waterbird species and pose a serious threat to wintering seabird populations. Linear regression analyses of oil rates from the Danish 22 year dataset show a decline in the oil pollution level in offshore areas of the eastern North Sea and Skagerrak and in near-shore parts of the Kattegat; but a worsening in the offshore areas of the Kattegat. These results raise concern for species such as common scoter, velvet scoter, eider and razorbill, for which the Kattegat serves as a globally important wintering area. It is recommended that surveillance for oil spills is intensified in inner Danish waters, and that action is taken to make responses towards offenders faster, and penalties for oil seepage higher.  相似文献

A large-scale field experiment took place in the marginal ice zone in the Barents Sea in May 2009. Fresh oil (7000 L) was released uncontained between the ice floes to study oil weathering and spreading in ice and surface water. A detailed monitoring of oil-in-water and ice interactions was performed throughout the six-day experiment. In addition, meteorological and oceanographic data were recorded for monitoring of the wind speed and direction, air temperature, currents and ice floe movements. The monitoring showed low concentrations of dissolved hydrocarbons and the predicted acute toxicity indicated that the acute toxicity was low. The ice field drifted nearly 80 km during the experimental period, and although the oil drifted with the ice, it remained contained between the ice floes.  相似文献

We applied a three-dimensional general ocean and coastal circulation model to the Irish Sea in order to determine water renewal time scales in the region. The model was forced with meteorological data for 1995, a year with relatively warm summer and when extensive hydrographic surveys were conducted in the Irish Sea. We investigated intra-annual variability in the rates of net flow through the Irish Sea and carried out several flushing simulations based on conservative tracer transport. The results indicate that the net northward flow of 2.50 km3/d is seasonally highly variable and under certain conditions is reversed to southward. The variability in obtained residence times is high; baroclinic effects are significant. Obtained results point at the importance of spatial and temporal consideration for transport of pollutants in the shelf seas. Implications for management are numerous and involve activities such as transport, fishing, use of resources, nature conservation, monitoring, tourism and recreation.  相似文献

A hydroecological model is used for simultaneous studying water pollution processes by petroleum hydrocarbons and their decay under the oceanographic conditions of Tatar Strait. The model calculations were based on long-term averaged observational data on interannual variations of water temperature, light intensity, and transparency. Some oceanographic characteristics of the strait were reconstructed with the help of GIS “Sakhalin Shelf.” The strait’s water area was divided into three regions, and water exchange between them and the neighboring regions of the Sea of Japan was estimated by a hydrodynamic model. The results of the study made it possible to assess interannual variations in the concentrations and inner fluxes of petroleum hydrocarbons, oil-oxidizing bacteria biomasses, and the characteristics of their oxidation activity.  相似文献

The available observational data on the pollution of tributaries and areas of the Caspian Sea by petroleum hydrocarbons and products are examined. The possible petroleum input from sources in the sea is assessed using up-to-date data of satellite observations of sea surface pollution by oil films. The hydroecological CNPSi-model is applied to studying water pollution processes by petroleum hydrocarbons in ten areas chosen in the Caspian Sea and the subsequent biodegradation of those pollutants. The model calculations of the within-year dynamics of petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations use mean annual observational data on within-year variations in water mediium characteristics (water temperature, light intensity, and transparency), as well as the morphometric parameters of sea areas (the area, mean depth, and water volumes). The characteristics of water exchange between the areas were evaluated using a hydrodynamic model. The model calculations were used to characterize the within-year variations in petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations, the biomasses of petroleum-oxidizing bacteria, the characteristics of their oxidation activity and bioproduction, and the internal fluxes of petroleum hydrocarbons (their input from various sources, horizontal and vertical transport, and biotransformation) in different sea areas. Calculation results were used to compile annual balances for the processes of input and consumption of petroleum hydrocarbons in the chosen and aggregated sea areas.  相似文献

In 2002, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany, started to use FerryBox-automated monitoring systems on Ships of Opportunity to continuously record standard oceanographic, biological and chemical in situ data in the North Sea. The present study summarises the operational experience gathered since the beginning of this deployment and reflects on the potential and limits of FerryBox systems as a monitoring tool. One part relates to the instrumental performance, constancy of shipping services, and the availability and quality of the recorded in situ data. The other considers integration of the FerryBox observations in scientific applications and routine monitoring campaigns. Examples are presented that highlight the added value of the recorded data for the study of both long- and short-term variability in water mass stability, plankton communities and surface water productivity in the North Sea. Through the assessment of technical and scientific performance, it is evident that FerryBoxes have become a valuable tool in marine research that helps to fill gaps in coastal and open ocean operational observation networks.  相似文献

Large canyons incise the shelf break of the eastern Bering Sea to be preferred sites of the cross-shelf exchange. The mesoscale eddy activity is particularly strong near the shelf-break canyons. To study the mesoscale dynamics in the Navarin Canyon area of the Bering Sea, the time series of velocities derived from AVISO satellite altimetry between 1993 and 2015, drifters, Argo buoys, and ship-borne data are analyzed. We demonstrate that the strength of anticyclonic eddies along the shelf edge in spring and summer is determined by the wind stress in March–April. The increased southward wind stress in the central Bering Sea forced a supply of low-temperature and low-salinity outer shelf water to the deep basin and formation of the anticyclonic mesoscale circulation seaward of the Navarin Canyon. Enhanced northwestward advection of the Bering Slope Current water leads to increase in an ice-free area in March and April and increased bottom-layer temperature at the outer shelf. The strong (weak) northwestward advection of the eastern Bering Sea waters, determined by eastern winds in spring, creates favorable (unfavorable) conditions for the pollock abundance in the western Navarin Canyon area in summer.  相似文献

An atlas of oceanographic data on the shelf zone of Sakhalin Island and a mathematical model describing the transformations of nutrient compounds (N, P, Si, C) are used to study the biotransformation and transport of organic and mineral components of these elements in the La Perouse Strait. To make the analysis more convenient, the area under examination was divided into four zones, which differ in the conditions of transport of matter in water flows. Transport calculations are made using a complex graphic method with geostrophic approximation, which takes into account the results of instrumental observations of flow velocities, sea level variations, and annual variations in the water volumes. The obtained patterns of dynamics of nutrient compounds are compared with the results of modeling of internal and external fluxes of those components. Calculated fluxes of the elements were used to assess the rate of chemicals and biomass transport through the boundaries of water areas (in particular, between the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk).  相似文献

Samples of water, sediment and mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the southern Baltic Sea have been analysed for total hydrocarbons by fluorescence spectroscopy and capillary gas chromatography. The sediment and mussel samples have also been analysed for specific aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons by computerized capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The highest hydrocarbon concentrations in all samples occurred either inshore (particularly in Gdansk Bay) or in deep offshore basins where fine sediment accumulates.  相似文献
