Lunisolar perturbations of an artificial satellite for general terms of the disturbing function were derived by Kaula (1962). However, his formulas use equatorial elements for the Moon and do not give a definite algorithm for computational procedures. As Kozai (1966, 1973) noted, both inclination and node of the Moon's orbit with respect to the equator of the Earth are not simple functions of time, while the same elements with respect to the ecliptic are well approximated by a constant and a linear function of time, respectively. In the present work, we obtain the disturbing function for the Lunar perturbations using ecliptic elements for the Moon and equatorial elements for the satellite. Secular, long-period, and short-period perturbations are then computed, with the expressions kept in closed form in both inclination and eccentricity of the satellite. Alternative expressions for short-period perturbations of high satellites are also given, assuming small values of the eccentricity. The Moon's position is specified by the inclination, node, argument of perigee, true (or mean) longitude, and its radius vector from the center of the Earth. We can then apply the results to numerical integration by using coordinates of the Moon from ephemeris tapes or to analytical representation by using results from lunar theory, with the Moon's motion represented by a precessing and rotating elliptical orbit.

The lunar disturbing function for a close-Earth satellite is expressed as a sum of products of harmonics of the satellite's position and harmonics of the Moon's position, and the latter are expanded about a rotating and precessing elliptic orbit inclined to the ecliptic. The deviations of the Moon from this approximate orbit are computed from Brown's lunar theory andthe perturbations in satellite orbital elements due to these inequalities are derived. Numerical calculations indicate that several perturbations in the position of the satellite's node and perigee have magnitudes on the order of one meter. The author is supported in part by a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

In the present study an investigation of the collision orbits of natural satellites of the Moon (considered to be of finite dimensions) is developed, and the tendency of natural satellites of the Moon to collide on the visible or the far side of the Moon is studied. The collision course of the satellite is studied up to its impact on the lunar surface for perturbations of its initial orbit arbitrarily induced, for example, by the explosion of a meteorite. Several initial conditions regarding the position of the satellite to collide with the Moon on its near (visible) or far (invisible) side is examined in connection to the initial conditions and the direction of the motion of the satellite. The distribution of the lunar craters-originating impact of lunar satellites or celestial bodies which followed a course around the Moon and lost their stability - is examined. First, we consider the planar motion of the natural satellite and its collision on the Moon's surface without the presence of the Earth and Sun. The initial velocities of the satellite are determined in such a way so its impact on the lunar surface takes place on the visible side of the Moon. Then, we continue imparting these velocities to the satellite, but now in the presence of the Earth and Sun; and study the forementioned impacts of the satellites but now in the Earth-Moon-Satellite system influenced also by the Sun. The initial distances of the satellite are taken as the distances which have been used to compute periodic orbits in the planar restricted three-body problem (cf. Gousidou-Koutita, 1980) and its direction takes different angles with the x-axis (Earth-Moon axis). Finally, we summarise the tendency of the satellite's impact on the visible or invisible side of the Moon.

Analytical methods for the orbits of artificial satellites of the Moon
The motion of a close artificial satellite of the Moon is considered. The principal perturbations taken into account are caused by the nonsphericity of the Moon and the attraction of the Earth and the Sun. To begin with, the expansions of the disturbing functions due to the nonsphericity of the primary body and the action of the disturbing mass-point body have been derived. The second expansion is produced in terms of the Keplerian elements of a satellite and the spherical coordinates of the disturbing body. Both expansions are valid for an arbitrary reference plane. The motion of a satellite of the Moon is studied in the selenocentric coordinate system referred to the Lunar equator and rotating with respect to the fixed ecliptic system. However, the coordinate exes in the equatorial plane are chosen so that the angular speed of rotation of the system is small. The motion of the satellite is described by means of the contact elements which enable one to utilize the conventional Lagrange's planetary equations and may be regarded as the generalization of the notion of the osculating elements to the case of the disturbing function depending not only o the coordinates and the time but on the velocities as well. Two methods are proposed to represent the motion of Lunar satellites over long intervals of time: the von Zeipel method and the Euler method of analytical integration with application of the variation-of-elements technique at every step of integration. The second method is exposed in great detail.Presented at the Meeting of Commission 7 of the IAU on Analytical Methods for the Orbits of Artificial Celestial Objects 14-th General Assembly of the IAU, Brighton, 1970.

This paper presents a new theory of the libration of the Moon, completely analytical with respect to the harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field. This field is represented through its third degree harmonics for the torque due to the Earth (second degree for the torque due to the Sun). The orbital motion of the Moon is described by the ELP 2000 solution (Chapront-Touzé, 1980) of the main problem of lunar theory.the physical libration variables are obtained as Poisson series and comparisons with the results of Eckhardt (Eckhardt, 1981) and Migus (Migus, 1980) are presented.

Luni-solar perturbations of an Earth satellite
Luni-solar perturbations of the orbit of an artificial Earth satellite are given by modifying the analytical theory of an artificial lunar satellite derived by the author in recent papers. Expressions for the first-order changes, both secular and periodic, in the elements of the geocentric Keplerian orbit of the earth satellite are given, the moon's geocentric orbit, including solar perturbations in it, being found by using Brown's lunar theory. The effects of Sun and Moon on the satellite orbit are described to a high order of accuracy so that the theory may be used for distant earth satellites.

The selenographic direction cosines of the Earth and of the pole of the ecliptic are developed in trigonometric series; the time dependence of each term enters through the Delaunay arguments. These and other series are tabulated for different libration parameters to provide means for calculating at any epoch the lunar librations and their partial derivatives with respect to the parameters.

In view of the scheduled satellite mission EXOSAT (European X-Ray Observatory Satellite) of ESA (European Space Agency) the lunar occultation technique to determine the position of point-like X-ray sources is investigated. An error analysis for the source coordinates resulting from this technique is presented and an occultation strategy is proposed to achieve optimum lunar occultations. The analysis takes into account the errors of the space coordinates of the satellite and the Moon, the unevenness of the lunar surface, the intensities of source and background, the apparent angular velocity of the Moon as seen from the satellite, the finite sizes of the preoccultation position error boxes of the X-ray sources and the inaccuracies in the satellite orbit correction manoeuvres necessary to achieve the occultations.

The effect of the Earth??s compression on the physical libration of the Moon is studied using a new vector method. The moment of gravitational forces exerted on the Moon by the oblate Earth is derived considering second order harmonics. The terms in the expression for this moment are arranged according to their order of magnitude. The contribution due to a spherically symmetric Earth proves to be greater by a factor of 1.34 × 106 than a typical term allowing for the oblateness. A linearized Euler system of equations to describe the Moon??s rotation with allowance for external gravitational forces is given. A full solution of the differential equation describing the Moon??s libration in longitude is derived. This solution includes both arbitrary and forced oscillation harmonics that we studied earlier (perturbations due to a spherically symmetric Earth and the Sun) and new harmonics due to the Earth??s compression. We posed and solved the problem of spinorbital motion considering the orientation of the Earth??s rotation axis with regard to the axes of inertia of the Moon when it is at a random point in its orbit. The rotation axes of the Earth and the Moon are shown to become coplanar with each other when the orbiting Moon has an ecliptic longitude of L ? = 90° or L ? = 270°. The famous Cassini??s laws describing the motion of the Moon are supplemented by the rule for coplanarity when proper rotations in the Earth-Moon system are taken into account. When we consider the effect of the Earth??s compression on the Moon??s libration in longitude, a harmonic with an amplitude of 0.03?? and period of T 8 = 9.300 Julian years appears. This amplitude exceeds the most noticeable harmonic due to the Sun by a factor of nearly 2.7. The effect of the Earth??s compression on the variation in spin angular velocity of the Moon proves to be negligible.

It is known that most of the craters on the surface of the Moon were created by the collision of minor bodies of the Solar System. Main Belt Asteroids, which can approach the terrestrial planets as a consequence of different types of resonance, are actually the main responsible for this phenomenon. Our aim is to investigate the impact distributions on the lunar surface that low-energy dynamics can provide. As a first approximation, we exploit the hyberbolic invariant manifolds associated with the central invariant manifold around the equilibrium point L 2 of the Earth–Moon system within the framework of the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. Taking transit trajectories at several energy levels, we look for orbits intersecting the surface of the Moon and we attempt to define a relationship between longitude and latitude of arrival and lunar craters density. Then, we add the gravitational effect of the Sun by considering the Bicircular Restricted Four-Body Problem. In the former case, as main outcome, we observe a more relevant bombardment at the apex of the lunar surface, and a percentage of impact which is almost constant and whose value depends on the assumed Earth–Moon distance dEM. In the latter, it seems that the Earth–Moon and Earth–Moon–Sun relative distances and the initial phase of the Sun θ 0 play a crucial role on the impact distribution. The leading side focusing becomes more and more evident as dEM decreases and there seems to exist values of θ 0 more favorable to produce impacts with the Moon. Moreover, the presence of the Sun makes some trajectories to collide with the Earth. The corresponding quantity floats between 1 and 5 percent. As further exploration, we assume an uniform density of impact on the lunar surface, looking for the regions in the Earth–Moon neighbourhood these colliding trajectories have to come from. It turns out that low-energy ejecta originated from high-energy impacts are also responsible of the phenomenon we are considering.

We have developed a theory of the rotation of the Moon, for the purpose of obtaining libration series explicitly dependent upon lunar gravitational field model parameters. A nonlinear model is used in which the rigid Moon, whose motion in space is that of the main problem of lunar theory, and whose gravity potential is represented through its third degree harmonics, is torqued by the Earth and Sun. The analytical series are then obtained as Poisson series. Numerical comparisons with Eckhardt's solution are briefly exposed.

The circular maria - Orientale, Imbrium, Serenitatis, Crisium, Smythii, and Tsiolkovsky -lie nearly on a lunar great circle. This pattern can be considered the result of a very close, non-capture encounter between Moon and Earth early in solar-system history. Of critical importance in analyzing the effects of such an encounter is the position of the weightlessness limit of the Earth-Moon System which is located at about 1.63R e, measured from the center of Earth to center of Moon. Within this weightlessness limit, material can be pulled from the lunar surface and interior by Earth's gravity and either escape from the Moon or be redistributed onto the lunar surface. In the case of an encounter with a non-spinning Moon, backfalling materials would be distributed along a lunar great circle. However, if the Moon is rotating during the encounter, the backfall pattern will deviate from the great circle, the amount depending on the rate and direction of spin. Such a close encounter model may be related to the pattern of circular maria if materials departing from the source region are visualized as spheroids of molten lunar upper mantle basalt. These spheroids, then, would impact onto the lunar surface to form a pattern of lava lakes. Radiometric dates from mare rocks are consistent with this model of mare formation if the older mare rock dates are considered to date the encounter and younger dates are considered to date subsequent volcanic eruptions on a structurally weakened Moon.

The general perturbations in the elliptic and vectorial elements of a satellite as caused by the tidal deformations of the non-spherical Earth are developed into trigonometric series in the standard ecliptical arguments of Hill-Brown lunar theory and in the equatorinal elements ω and Ω of the satellite. The integration of the differential equations for variation of elements of the satellite in this theory is easy because all arguments are linear or nearly linear in time. The trigonometrical expansion permits a judgment about the relative significance of the amplitudes and periods of different tidal ‘waves’ over a long period of time. Graphs are presented of the tidal perturbations in the elliptic elements of the BE-C satellite which illustrate long term periodic behavior. The tidal effects are clearly noticeable in the observations and their comparison with the theory permits improvement of the ‘global’ Love numbers for the Earth.

The Delaunay-Similar elements of Scheifele are applied to the problem of an Earth satellite that is perturbed by the Sun, Moon andJ 2. All three effects are assumed to be the same order of magnitude. Since the external body terms depend explicitly on time, the time element appears as an additional angle variable. Also, the eccentric anomaly is used as a noncanonical auxiliary variable. A solution to the first Von Zeipel equation allows simultaneous elimination of short and intermediate period terms. The canonical transformation to mean elements is defined by a generating function that is a series involving Bessel coefficients.

The design of a lunar landing trajectory which satisfies certain constraints is considered and discussed. The constraints are of two kinds, kinetic constraints, which deal with the relative positions among the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, the spacecraft and tracking stations, and dynamic constraints, which deal with the orbital motion of the spacecraft. After a discussion of the characteristics of lunar flight trajectory, a method of designing standard flight trajectory is suggested that satisfies the constraints. This method is applied to the Chinese lunar landing flight and to the pre-design of the orbit of a lunar satellite.

Based on a large body of observational data on radio emission from the Moon, we study the dependence of lunar radio temperature variations on illumination conditions. The data were obtained with the RATAN-600 radio telescope with a high sensitivity and resolution, which has not yet been used to construct radio images of the Moon. The harmonic parameters (amplitudes and phase angles) were determined both for the average Moon and for regions with temperature anomalies revealed by the RATAN-600 observations. These parameters allow the physical properties of the lunar soil to be investigated. The distribution of the loss-angle tangent (tan ), one of the characteristics of the lunar material, over the Moon was determined. The loss-angle tangent is related to the content of ilmenite, a rock containing oxygen, iron, and titanium, in the lunar soil. Studies of the ilmenite distribution on the Moon are particularly important in view of the prospects for building a habitable lunar base that needs oxygen. It is relatively easy and cheap to extract oxygen, iron, and titanium from ilmenite.

A theory of the libration of the Moon, completely analytical with respect to the harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field, was recently built (Moons, 1982). The Lie transforms method was used to reduce the Hamiltonian of the main problem of the libration of the Moon and to produce the usual libration series p1, p2 and . This main problem takes into account the perturbations due to the Sun and the Earth on the rotation of a rigid Moon about its center of mass. In complement to this theory, we have now computed the planetary effects on the libration, the planetary terms being added to the mean Hamiltonian of the main problem before a last elimination of the angles. For the main problem, as well as for the planetary perturbations, the motion of the center of mass of the Moon is described by the ELP 2000 solution (Chapront and Chapront-Touze, 1983).
