Today one of the main questions standing before geology of Venus is comprehension of tectonic style on surface of this planet. The observed ridge belts on the images of the radar surveyors of Venera-15 and -16 are related to one aspect of a solution of this problem. In general there are two views on the origin of the ridge belts on the planet. Some of the investigators consider them as a result of compression while others as extension. These discrepancies are connected with uncertainties of interpretations of the major structures of these belts, i.e., the ridges. This paper represents a review of evidence in favor of extension and compression observed within the ridge belts. Moreover it discusses the major speculative ideas and models of the ridge belts origin. The supporters of a ridge formation by extension suggest that these linear features are results of crust cracking and intruding of magma along these cracks so they propose that the ridge belts on the plains of Venus can represent analogies of the spreading zones on Earth. Other investigators assume that the ridge of belts represent structures of folding and or thrust faulting due to the tectonic compression environment so the ridge belts can be analogies of the orogenic belts and subduction zones on Earth. So the question of the ridge belts' origin remains controversial and for a solution, set one's hope on the Magellan mission.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. Ridge belts, composed of closely spaced individual ridges 5–20 km wide, form sinuous patterns 30–400 km wide and 200–2000 km long in the plains of northern Venus. They are not homogeneously distributed, but occur primarily in two regions: between 0 ° E and 90 ° E ridge belts are associated with large blocks of tessera, and have a cumulative length of about 13,200 km; and between 150 ° E and 250 ° E, the ridge belts form a fan-shaped pattern and have a total cumulative length of about 25,800 km. Most ridge belts trend within 10 ° of N-S. Five morphologic components exist within the ridge belts: (1) broad ridges, which have no sharp crest and usually occur individually in the plains: (2) discontinuous ridges, with short ridge segments less than 20 km long; (3) paired ridges, with closely spaced ridges (less than 10 km apart) that never merge; (4) parallel ridges, with widely spaced (10–50 km), less prominent ridges; and (5) anastomosing ridges, in which ridges splay at angles up to 30 °. Subtle cross-strike lineaments cut the ridge belts at angles of 30–90 ° to the ridge belt, and augen-shaped plains are often present in anastomosing ridges. We examine the relationships between the components, plains, cross-strike lineaments, and augen-shaped plains in five ridge belts. Broad arches similar to the arches associated with wrinkle ridges on the Moon, Mars and Mercury appear in all of the ridge belts examined. Through studying each of these components individually and in the context of five specific ridge belts, we conclude that these ridge belts formed by compressional forces. The ridge belts form a continuum of deformation, from the simple broad arches (Nephele Dorsa), representing small amounts of shortening, through asymmetric ridge belts in the plains (Pandrosa Dorsa) and adjacent to tessera (Kamari Dorsa), to ridge belts in troughs representing underthrusting (Ausra and Lukelong Dorsa). Underthrusting is also observed along the borders of Lakshmi Planum, associated with Freyja and Danu Montes.The interpreted compressional origins for the ridge belt components suggests that many of the other ridge belts are of compressional origin, although complex origins (involving a combination of extension, shear, and/or compression) for some ridge belts cannot be ruled out. A survey of THEMIS visible wavelength images in the Aeolis/Zephyria Plana region over the two western lobes of the equatorial Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) shows ∼150 sinuous ridges having a variety of morphologies and contexts. To systematize investigation, we use a classification scheme including both individual ridge and ridge network types, as well as associations with impact craters and fan-shaped features. The morphology of the ridges, their location downslope from higher topography (e.g., crater rims and scarps), and their association with fan-shaped forms indicate that most sinuous ridges formed through overland aqueous flow. Analysis of observations by individual ridge type leads to interpretation of most of these sinuous ridges as inverted fluvial channels or floodplains and a few as possible eskers, with the origin of the remaining ridges under continuing investigation. About 15% of the sinuous ridges are associated with impact craters, but data analysis does not support a genetic relationship between the craters and the sinuous ridges. Instead, analysis of one sinuous ridge network associated with a crater indicates that the water source for the network was atmospheric in origin, namely, precipitation runoff. The broad areal distribution of these ∼150 ridges and the network morphologies, in particular the branched and subparallel types, suggest that an atmospheric water source is generally applicable to the population of sinuous ridges as a whole. This concentration of sinuous ridges is the largest single population of such landforms on Mars and among the youngest. These ridges are situated at a paleoscarp between Cerberus Palus and the Aeolis highlands, suggesting that the precipitation that formed them was orographic in origin. The ages of the equatorial MFF units in which this population of sinuous ridges is found imply that this orographic rain and/or snow fell during some period from the late Hesperian through the middle Amazonian.  相似文献

The energy balance and ablation of Glaciar Lengua were investigated during the austral summer of 1999/2000. Glaciar Lengua is located in Patagonia, in the southernmost Andes of Chile (53°S), within an extremely maritime climate. The aim of this study was to gain insight into current energy fluxes at this location and to evaluate how the energy fluxes depend on meteorological variables. From February to April 2000 an automated weather station was operated on Glaciar Lengua. Ablation was measured repeatedly at stakes during the same period. The point energy balance was calculated using the bulk approach formulation. The effective roughness length was adjusted in order to calibrate the model to the measured ablation. It was revealed that sensible heat transfer is the major contribution to the energy balance adding 54% of the energy available for melt. Net radiation contributes only 35% to the overall energy balance. Minor contributors are the latent heat flux (7%) and the heat flux by precipitation (4%). The net radiation shows little variance from day to day. Cross-correlations of the daily mean values of the energy fluxes derived from the energy balance model and meteorological variables reveal that air temperature and wind speed are the key factors controlling the summer energy balance in the ablation area. Melt derived from a multiple regression model based on these two variables correlates with computed melt with a correlation coefficient of 0.92. From the measured ablation, a summer-time degree-day factor of 7.6 mm·°C− 1 was derived for the ablation area.  相似文献

太阳耀斑中硬X射线(HXR)光子谱的低能变平过去一般认为是由于耀斑中非热电子的低能截止造成的,但现在也有作者认为耀斑光子与下层大气的逆康普顿散射(albedo效应)或者其他作用也能够使得HXR光子谱出现低能变平的情形.采用Gan etal.(2001,2002)中提出的求非热电子低能截止的方法,统计分析了Ramaty High EnergySolar Spectroscopy Imager(RHESSI)卫星在2002--2005年间观测的100个耀斑,发现经albedo校正,有18个耀斑的HXR光子谱可以利用单幂律谱来拟合,在80个可以用双幂律谱来拟合HXR光子谱的耀斑中,有21个耀斑可以直接用单幂律电子谱加一个低能截止来解释.低能截止范围为20-50keV,平均值约为30keV.同时也分析了耀斑光子谱特征的其他可能解释.  相似文献

It was shown in a previous paper (Smith, 1976) that the method of strained coordinates may be usefully employed in the determination of the structure of rotating polytropes. In the present work this idea is extended to Main-Sequence stars with conservative centrifugal fields. The structure variables, pressure, density and temperature are considered pure functions of an auxiliary coordinates (the strained coordinate) and the governing equations written in a form that closely resembles the structure equations for spherical stars but with correction factors that are functions ofs. A systematic, order-by-order derivation of these factors is outlined and applied in detail to a Cowling-model star in uniform rotation. The technique can be extended beyond first order and external boundary conditions are applied, as they should be, at the true surface of the star. Roche approximations are not needed.  相似文献

Laplace’s method is a standard for the calculation of a preliminary orbit. Certain modifications, briefly summarized, enhance its efficacy. At least one differential correction is recommended, and sometimes becomes essential, to increase the accuracy of the computed orbital elements. Difficult problems, lack of convergence of the differential corrections, for example, can be handled by total least squares or ridge regression. The differential corrections represent more than just getting better agreement with the observations, but a means by which a satisfactory orbit can be calculated. The method is applied to three examples of differing difficulty: to calculate a preliminary orbit of Comet 122/P de Vico from 59 observations made during five days in 1995; a more difficult calculation of a possible new object with a poor distribution of observations; Herget’s method fails for this example; and finally a really difficult object, the Amor type minor planet 1982 DV (3288 Seleucus). For this last object use of L1 regression becomes essential to calculate a preliminary orbit. For this orbit Laplace’s method compares favorably with Gauss’s.  相似文献

In Lindsley's thermometry, a revised sequence of calculation of components is proposed for clinopyroxene, in which kosmochlor component is added. Temperatures obtained for the components calculated by the revised method are about 50 °C lower than those obtained for the components calculated by the Lindsley's original method and agree well with temperatures obtained from orthopyroxenes. Ca‐partitioning between clino‐ and orthopyroxenes is then thought to be equilibrated in types 5 to 7 ordinary chondrites. The temperatures for Tuxtuac (LL5), Dhurmsala (LL6), NWA 2092 (LL6/7), and Dho 011 (LL7) are 767–793°, 818–835°, 872–892°, and 917–936°C, respectively, suggesting that chondrites of higher petrographic types show higher equilibrium temperatures of pyroxenes. The regression equations which relate temperature and Wo and Fs contents in the temperature‐contoured pyroxene quadrilateral of 1 atm of Lindsley (1983) are also determined by the least squares method. It is possible to reproduce temperatures with an error less than 20 °C (2SE) using the regression equations.  相似文献

The contribution to the continuous emission by electron scattering in anHii region (Pottasch's suggestion) is studied. The phenomenon is evaluated for different cases, and compared with the contribution due to atomic processes. It is proved, taking into account all the possible variables, that the contribution is neglected for typical Hii regions in our Galaxy, and in other galaxies.  相似文献

The main major ridge belts of Ganiki Planitia on Venus (Lama, Ahsonnutli and Pandrosos Dorsa) are part of the fan-shaped ridge belt complex along the 200 parallel of longitude. These ridge belts with evidence of crustal shortening support the idea of a large-scale E-W compression. The ridge belt patterns indicate a N-S shear component. These forces are explained by a triangular planitia area which compressed by surrounding terrains. The crustal shortening and ridge belt formation indicates compressional plate movement stresses in the uppermost lithosphere.Three sizes of ridge belt structure are to be found within Ganiki Planitia. (1) The ridge belt spacing of 200–400 km can be used to estimate the depth of the major uppermost homogeneous layer of Venus. There are numerous volcanic coronae, paterae and montes located along the main ridge belts or at their junctions. (2) Mid-size ridge groups or subbelts are to be found within the major ridge belts. These are formed by more local responses to tectonic stresses in the stratified uppermost crust. A wavelength of 40–70 km can be seen as a result of bending of the crustal strata and may relate to its thickness. (3) Small individual ridges are connected with most local stresses, defining places where the surface layers broke along the crests of large ridge belts or mid-scale subbelts. Radial and concentric mare ridge-like structures around coronae indicate that corona formation was effective at a sufficiently close vicinity to fault the surface.  相似文献

It is argued that all SNI come from short-lived stars and do not occur in a typical, isolationist, gas-free early-type galaxy. SNI occur only in those galaxies which accrete gas and form stars. SN properties of E/SOs are, therefore, determined by environmental factors. Presence of gas and dust in early-type galaxies, SN occurrence, nuclear emission, and radio-activity are all manifestations of the same phenomenon, namely availability of gas.What is now urgently required is multi-colour photometry of supernovic early-type galaxies around the regions of recorded SN to see if there are signs of recent star-formation.  相似文献

It is shown that it is possible to make a change of variables in a Lagrangian in such a way that the number of variables is increased. The Euler-Lagrange equations in the redundant variables are obtained in the standard way (without the use of Lagrange Multipliers!). These equations are not independent but they are all valid and consistent. In some cases they are simpler than if the minimum number of variables are used. The redundant variables are supposed to be related to each other by several constraints (not necessarily holonomic), but these constraints are not used in the derivation of the equations of motion. The method is illustrated with the well known Kustaanheimo-Stiefel Regularization. We present a first overview of variable stars in the Bochum Galactic Disk Survey (GDS) with emphasis on eclipsing binaries (EBs). This ongoing survey is performed by a robotic twin refractor at the Universitätssternwarte Bochum located near Cerro Armazones in Chile. It comprises a mosaic of 268 fields in a stripe of Δb = ±3° along the Galactic plane observed once per month simultaneously in the Sloan r and i filters with a detection limit of rs ∼ 16 mag and is ∼ 15 mag. The data from the first three years until the end of February 2014 yields a total of 41718 variable stars with variability amplitudes between 0.1–6 mag. A cross‐match with SIMBAD identified 11 465 of these variables unambiguously, while 2184 had multiple matches; most of the remaining stars could be matched with 2MASS objects. Among the SIMBAD‐listed objects with single matches, only 1982 turned out as known variables while a further 256 are suspected of variability. That leaves a total of 39480 potentially new variables. The group of known variables comprises 419 stars (21 %) that are classified as EBs while 443 (22%) are of other types; for the remaining 1120 catalogued variables (57 %) the type is unknown. Investigating variability as a function of spectral type, we find that SIMBAD provides spectral types for 2811 (25 %) of the identified stars. Spectral classes B (26 %), A (20 %), and M (25%) contain the most numerous variables, while all other classes contribute less than 10% each. More than half of the B (55 %) and A (56%) stars are designated as EBs, suggesting that hundreds of new B‐ and A‐type EBs may be contained in the GDS archive. The structure, dynamical equilibrium, and evolution of Saturn’s moon Iapetus are studied. It has been shown that, in the current epoch, the oblateness of the satellite ε2 ≈ 0.046 does not correspond to its angular velocity of rotation, which causes the secular spherization behavior of the ice shell of Iapetus. To study this evolution, we apply a spheroidal model, containing a rock core and an ice shell with an external surface ε2, to Iapetus. The model is based on the equilibrium finite-difference equation of the Clairaut theory, while the model parameters are taken from observations. The mean radius of the rock core and the oblateness of its level surface, ε1 ≈ 0.028, were determined. It was found that Iapetus is covered with a thick ice shell, which is 56.6% of the mean radius of the figure. We analyze a role of the core in the evolution of the shape of a gravitating figure. It was determined that the rock core plays a key part in the settling of the ice masses of the equatorial bulge, which finally results in the formation of a large circular equatorial ridge on the surface of the satellite. From the known mean altitude of this ice ridge, it was found that, in the epoch of its formation, the rotation period of Iapetus was 166 times shorter than that at present, as little as T ≈ 11h27m. This is consistent with the fact that a driving force of the evolution of the satellite in our model was its substantial despinning. The model also predicts that the ice ridge should be formed more intensively in the leading (dark and, consequently, warmer) hemisphere of the satellite, where the ice is softer. This inference agrees with the observations: in the leading hemisphere of Iapetus, the ridge is actually high and continuous everywhere, while it degenerates into individual ice peaks in the opposite colder hemisphere.  相似文献

The reflectance spectra of asteroids 10 Hygiea (C-type), 135 Hertha (M-type), and 196 Philomela (S-type) are obtained in a range of 0.40–0.91 μm with different time intervals. In this paper, the technique of the spectral measurements of asteroids is analyzed and the reflectance spectra of Hygiea, Hertha, and Philomela are interpreted. The main physical and chemical factors and processes influencing the spectral characteristics of asteroids are considered. It is determined that the spectra of Hertha and Hygiea contain variations exceeding the measurement errors several times at different relative rotation phases, whereas spectral variations of Philomela caused by its rotation hardly exceed the error limits. Most probably, these variations are caused by local manifestations of the impact metamorphism of the material of asteroids in serious impact events. Results show that, to determine the prevailing spectral type and the corresponding mineralogy of each asteroid, one should estimate and take into account the changes in its spectral characteristics for a time interval comparable to the rotation period.  相似文献

An extensive region of low, sinuous ridges occupies the Hesperian plateau above Echus Chasma in the upper Kasei Valles, Mars. The ridges have lengths of up to 270 km, heights of 100 m and widths of 10 km. The total volume of the ridge material is 6×1011 m3. In this paper, volcanic flows, depositional and erosional features are discussed using Mars Observer Laser Altimeter (MOLA), THEMIS and Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) imagery and a chronology that places the ridge formation in the Late Hesperian is developed.The plateau is bounded to the north and west by more recent Late Hesperian and Amazonian lava flows. The plateau floor suddenly changes from being relatively smooth, to elevated, rough, hummocky terrain that extends eastwards to Echus Chasma. This rough terrain is penetrated by 2 km broad, shallow entrant channels that join with the canyons of Echus Chasma. The sinuous ridges appear to control the surface drainage associated with the entrant channels.The sinuous ridges’ size and morphology are similar to those associated with volcanic ridge eruptions. Their degraded structure is reminiscent of Moberg ridges. The rough, hummocky terrain is interpreted as glacial outwash, subsequently eroded by short-lived floods associated with ridge eruptions. The presence of both volcanic and glacial structures on the Echus Plateau raises the possibility that the ridge system arose from subglacial, volcanic events. The resulting jokulhlaups eroded the broad, entrant channels. As surface flow declined, groundwater flows dominated and canyon heads eroded back along the entrant channels, by sapping.  相似文献

讨论了激光测距仪测距本领的限制因素,找出了诸多限制因素的内在联系,得出了影响测距能力的关键因素是目标的照明概率.在前人已有的对激光测距仪最佳发散角的选取方法基础上,对其进行了改进.新得到的方法在选取最佳发散角时具有快速、简洁和精确度高等特点,并利用多项式拟合对其进行了简化,使其可用于粗略估算.最后,利用数值模拟对新方法进行了验证分析.  相似文献

The phenomenon of the sudden disappearance of equatorial sporadic E at two stations, namely, Trivandrum and Kodaikanal is studied. It is established that whenever there is a sudden disappearance of Es, there is a depression in the horizontal magnetic field (H) range. Electron velocities during the presence and absence of sporadic E have been estimated. These results show that the irregularities responsible for sporadic E are present even when the electron velocities are less than the ion thermal velocity.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with identifying the spatial and temporal patterns in the annual maximum and minimum water level in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. The Mann–Kendall test and Pettitt test are used to detect trends and abrupt change points, and the Trend Free Pre-Whitening (TFPW) approach then eliminates the effect of serial correlation in data series with significant autocorrelation. Approximately fifty years of the annual hydrological variables from 18 stations in the three major rivers (the West River, the North River, and the East River) are examined. The changing trends of the extremes in water level show different features in different parts of the PRD region. Generally speaking, in the upper part of the delta, the water levels show a decreasing trend while in the middle and lower part there is an increasing trend. This spatial pattern of the extreme water level variation is unlikely to be due to a long-term change in stream flow in the PRD region because the water level changes do not always coincide with the extreme stream flow variations. Sand excavation initiated in the 1980s and continuing for more than 20 years in almost all tributaries around the PRD region is one of the most serious intensive human activities affecting water levels. The result of the Pettitt test indicates that most abrupt change points occurred in 1980s–1990s, which reveals that sand excavation and channel regulation are likely to have been the most significant factors contributing to the change over this period. These anthropogenic activities modify the annual extreme water level dramatically in a way that affects the morphology of river channels and estuaries of the PRD and also the redistribution of discharge. However, there are differences in the geographic locations of significant trends for the water level investigated, which implies that these impacts are not spatially uniform.  相似文献
