Despite the increasing understanding of bentonite behaviour, there is still missing evidence on how different hydro-mechanical loadings, including sequences of hydration and compression, affect the fabric and the volume change behaviour of the material. It is generally assumed that the interplay between the behaviour of clay assemblages and the overall fabric of the material is the reason of having final states that are dependent on the stress path followed. Here the results of an experimental campaign aiming to study these factors are reported and discussed. Free swelling and swelling pressure tests were performed, both followed by compression to a relatively high stress. The experimental program involved various samples that were dismantled at intermediate states in order to perform microstructural observations by means of mercury intrusion porosimetry and electronic scanning microscopy. It was observed that while the void ratio at a given stress level depends on the stress path, subsequent compression led to a unique virgin compression line. The data obtained at the microscale gave further insight for an interpretation of the volume change behaviour observed at the macroscale, showing that at high stress the material tends to recover the same fabric regardless of the path to saturation.

In the context of the French Cigéo-project, a mixture composed of 70% processed Callovo-Oxfordian claystone spoil and 30% MX80-bentonite could be a potential backfill material, whose installation aims to stabilize the surrounding rock formation and to limit the propagation of the excavation damaged zone. The backfill material must sustain the overburden pressure, despite that it might be exposed to different hydraulic and mechanical paths. The reference concept considers employing conventional compaction techniques, although their employment involves spatial variations in the dry density after compaction. In general, as the initial dry density has a significant impact on the hydro-mechanical behavior of backfill materials, it is of major importance to relate the variations in the initial dry density to differences in the behavior. This experimental laboratory study aimed to analyze how variations in the initial dry density affect the swelling and compression behavior of the claystone/bentonite mixture, in particular in unsaturated state. Further, it evaluated whether those variations affected possible hydro-mechanical path dependences. The experimental program comprised suction-controlled oedometer and constant-volume swelling pressure experiments, in which samples characterized by different initial dry densities were exposed to different hydro-mechanical paths. The analysis of microstructural and water retention characteristics complemented the program. Major results indicated that the magnitude of swelling pressure at a given suction depends considerably on the initial dry density, but it is independent of the imposed hydro-mechanical path. Interestingly, the dependency of the yield behavior on the hydro-mechanical path appears to be more pronounced as the initial dry density increases.

The Influence of Placement Conditions on the Swelling of Variable Clays   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The swelling of clay when it is subjected to moisture increase is a complicated process found to be influenced by several factors. The clay??s level of response is highly dependent on its mineralogical composition and structure. Practicing geotechnical engineers use the placement state and general index properties to forecast the swelling behavior of the soils. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of placement conditions on various clays and to demonstrate that the swelling of a particular clay type should not be predicted using information and trends obtained for other clays with different origins. Clay from Saudi Arabia was used to investigate the influence of initial moisture content and initial dry density on swelling. The prediction models created by other researchers were compared to the measured values in this study. The swelling behavior of both initially dry and wet prepared bentonite was examined, and the rate at which swelling developed in the bentonite clay was studied. The role of clay content in the volume change of sand?Cbentonite mixtures was also investigated. It was concluded that the prediction of clay-swelling parameters should not be based on the properties of other clays with different origins and mineralogical compositions. The trends published in the literature should be taken as a general guide only, and the influence of moisture content and dry density on swelling should be verified for individual sites. Because clay content significantly influences the overall volume change, it should be carefully assessed in each case.  相似文献

对两种高庙子钠基膨润土(简称GMZ001和GMZ07)在不同初始干密度下进行膨胀力试验、常压力下的膨胀变形试验以及压缩试验。试验结果表明,GMZ001的膨胀能力要比GMZ07的大,并且GMZ001比GMZ07更难压实。对饱和后两种膨润土进行压汞试验和扫描电子显微镜测试后发现,在相同孔隙比下,GMZ07集聚体间孔隙较多,并且GMZ001集聚体的水化程度大于GMZ07。结合土工和微观试验的结果,认为导致两者力学性能差异的主要原因是由于颗粒粒径大小的差异以及蒙脱石含量的不同。最后利用蒙脱石孔隙比的概念对两种膨润土的浸水膨胀试验结果进行归一化,并对膨润土的膨胀特性进行了预测。  相似文献

Municipalities and recycling and environmental authorities are concerned about the growing amount of carpet waste produced by household, commercial and industrial sectors. It is reported that 500,000 tonnes of carpet waste fibre are plunged into landfills annually in the UK. In the United States of America, around 10 million tonnes of textile waste was generated in 2003. In geotechnical engineering, expansive clay soils are categorised as problematic soils due to their swelling behaviour upon increase in the moisture content. The problematic nature of such soils is intensified with the increase in the plasticity index. This paper presents results of a comprehensive investigation into utilisation of carpet waste fibres in order to improve the swelling characteristics of compacted cohesive soils. Therefore, two different clay soils with markedly different plasticity indices (i.e. 17.0 and 31.5 %) were treated with two different types of carpet waste fibre. Waste fibres were added to prepare specimens with fibre content of 1, 3 and 5 % by dry weight of soil. Soil specimens with different dry unit weights and moisture contents were prepared so as to the swelling behaviour of fibre reinforced compacted clays is completely attained under various scenarios. The results indicated that the behaviour of the fibre reinforced soils seems highly dependent on the initial compaction state and secondary on the moisture content. It was found that the swelling pressure drops rapidly as the percentage of fibre increases in samples prepared at the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content. Reducing the dry unit weight, while maintaining constant moisture content or increasing the moisture content at constant dry unit weight was found to reduce the swelling pressure.  相似文献

Engineering problems associated with expansive clay formations, which have a large swelling and shrinking potential, exist in different regions of Romania.In the general framework of the study of the behaviour of expansive clays, the present paper describes some particular aspects connected with the swelling and shrinkage processes and their engineering effects in Romania.The differences between swelling potential relationships, obtained by two different methods are presented and discussed. Swelling pressure tests were accomplished using the available standard techniques, as well as a specially developed cell pressure equipment.Attention is drawn to the stages of the shrinkage process as related to soil structure. It was found that, in a general case, there are three distinct?tages: initial, normal and residual shrinkage.Laboratory investigations have shown that in soils with an anisotropic structure, the directional variation of shrinkage strains is elliptical in shape, with the maximum shrinkage normal to particle orientation.The engineering aspects of the results are discussed.  相似文献

采用普通固结仪和收缩仪分别进行蒙自重塑膨胀土浸水膨胀变形试验和膨胀土失水收缩变形试验,系统地研究了不同初始状态下膨胀土胀缩变形规律与致灾机制,并应用Does Response模型,定量模拟了膨胀土胀缩时程规律。研究表明,蒙自膨胀土胀缩变形差异较大,一般吸水膨胀率远大于失水收缩率,相似状态下试样膨胀系数越大,收缩系数亦越大,表现出较强的各向异性;膨胀土含有的大量细小黏土颗粒与较强的蒙脱石晶体矿物及显著的微结构特征,是其产生强烈胀缩变形灾害的内因与本质,而土中发育的微孔隙-裂隙结构及其初始状态,是发生胀缩变形灾害的外因。  相似文献

A mixture of the MX80 bentonite and the Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone were investigated by carrying out a series of experiments including determination of the swelling pressure of compacted samples by constant-volume method, pre-swell method, zero-swell method and swell–consolidation method. Distilled water, synthetic water and humidity controlled vapour were employed for hydration. Results show that upon wetting the swelling pressure increases with decreasing suction; however, there are no obvious effects of synthetic water chemistry and hydration procedure on the swelling behaviour in both short and long terms. For the same initial dry density, the swelling pressure decreases with increasing pre-swell strain; whereas there is a well defined logarithmic relation between the swelling pressure and final dry density of the sample regardless of the initial dry densities and the experimental methods. It was also found that swelling pressure depends on the loading-wetting conditions as a consequence of the different microstructure changes occurred in different conditions. Furthermore, it was attempted to elaborate a general relationship between the swelling pressure and the final dry density for various reference bentonites.  相似文献

膨胀力是膨胀岩土地区工程设计和施工中的重要参数,目前常用的膨胀力试验方法主要有膨胀反压法、平衡加压法和加压膨胀法3种。膨胀力大小容易受试验方法的影响。为了研究试验方法对膨胀力的影响,以延吉膨胀岩为研究对象,采用上述3种方法开展了不同初始含水率试样的膨胀力试验,分析比较了3种试验方法的特点和适用范围。结果表明,膨胀力具有强烈的水-力路径效应,3种方法确定的膨胀力存在较大差异,膨胀反压法测得的膨胀力最大,加压膨胀法最小;3种方法确定的膨胀力与初始含水率之间存在明显的线性负相关关系,随着试样初始含水率的增加,不同方法得到的膨胀力与初始含水率的关系曲线逐渐靠拢,水-力路径对膨胀力试验结果的影响逐渐减弱,每一种方法有其自身的特点和特定的适用范围,膨胀力测试应该根据实际工况选择合适的试验方法。  相似文献

The laboratory dynamic compaction test was used to study the effects of dynamic impact loads on the shear strength characteristics of loess. Loess specimens were compacted by different numbers of blows and their shear strengths measured. The experimental results revealed that the shear strength varies in stages with the number of blows. During the initial stage, the shear strength increases with the number of blows. It reaches a peak value and then decreases with the number of blows. To reveal the relationship between this alternation in shear strength and microstructural variation, quantitative microstructural analyses were performed on some tested specimens at different stages of strength evolution. This microstructural study demonstrated that the variation of shear strength is directly related to the alteration of microstructure. It is concluded that the shear strength of loess is basically controlled by its microstructural state. Growing particle size heterogeneity, varying particle orientations and increasing microstructural damage are the main causes of the alternation of shear strength.  相似文献

根据典型上海软土重塑土样的等向压缩试验,测K0与不测K0的单向压缩试验结果,得到不同试验条件下的压缩指数Cc和膨胀指数Cs,并分析了它们之间的关系。进行三轴排水剪切试验,得到了重塑上海软土在不同超固结比和围压下的变形和强度特性,并计算出重塑上海软土的内摩擦角。最后,根据一组不同荷载下的长期单向压缩试验结果,得到重塑上海软土的次压缩系数C?与荷载之间的关系。上述研究得到的初步结论及相关参数可为工程实践、超固结上海软土本构模型的建立提供参考数据。  相似文献

Expansive soils exhibit large volume changes when their water content changes. Alternate heave and settlement due to seasonal climatic variations result in distress and damage in civil infrastructure systems. This research focuses on the understanding of swelling and shrinkage phenomenon in the surface layer of expansive soils. Undisturbed field samples were used to capture the effect of in situ conditions (geologically induced fissuring and environmentally caused saturation) on volume change properties of Regina clay. Based on laboratory investigations, the swelling potential and swelling pressure of the native clay at S = 82% were found to be 1.5% and 3.5 kPa, respectively. The swell-shrink path during progressive soil drying followed an S-shaped curve comprising of an initial low structural shrinkage followed by a sharp decline during normal shrinkage and then by a low decrease during residual shrinkage. The soil microstructure correlated well with the observed volume change behaviour as well as with the consistency limits. The presence of fissures in field samples at various degrees of saturation confirmed that the investigated deposit is at an equilibrium condition with respect to the swell-shrink phenomenon. The swelling properties at any initial saturation state were estimated using the free swelling test and the swell-shrink test data in conjunction. The swelling potential increased 12 times (from 2 to 24%) and the swelling pressure increased by two orders of magnitude (from 27 to 2500 kPa) with a change in the degree of saturation from 80% (at the plastic limit) to 60% (at the shrinkage limit).  相似文献

The main goal of the study was to compare two methods of structural analysis, based on different principles: an engineering method and the Eraso method. The first one was developed with the intention of studying geotechnical and hydraulic properties on freshly exposed rock surfaces, while the second one is based on microtectonic analysis and is mainly applied on surface outcrops. Structural analysis of discontinuities in fractured and karstified rock at one experimental field site in Slovenia was performed. Measurements were carried out on surface outcrops and in an underground artificial tunnel, twice in two different seasons (autumn 1999 and summer 1996), but by the same personnel. Both methods were found to be more or less repeatable and applicable both on the surface outcrops (weathered rock) and on freshly excavated rock surfaces (artificial tunnels and quarries), and on a macroscale. 青山铅锌矿床是黔西北矿集区内威宁-水城成矿亚带的典型矿床之一,矿体产出严格受构造和岩性双重因素控制。含矿断裂带中构造岩既是构造变形作用的载体,也是相应变形环境的受体,其具有显著的分带特征。针对斜落走滑构造环境下弱蚀变构造岩与热液成矿成生联系研究的薄弱环节,基于构造岩-岩相学填图方法以及不同岩相带内节理、裂隙构造解析,系统采集不同构造岩-岩相带内定向构造岩样品,进行显微构造与地球化学分析,剖析不同岩相带内构造岩类型、物质组成、内部结构、构造及其分带特征,构建了该矿床构造岩-岩相分带模式,即从矿体向外,依次为:张裂岩相带→泥化相带(一、三中段及以上)→扭裂岩相带→压裂岩相带。扭裂岩相带内发育黄铁矿化、铅锌矿化、方解石化、弱白云石化,压裂岩相带内主要发育方解石化,矿化蚀变随着远离矿体呈现出从强变弱的变化规律,成矿环境也随着温度逐渐降低,呈现氧化→弱氧化-弱还原→还原的变化特征。同时,结合宏观和显微构造应力场分析,认为矿体外侧不同类型的构造岩是在统一构造应力场作用下,因不同位置的局部应力场变化而形成的不同类型的构造岩,发育在北西向断裂下盘的次级断裂不仅控制了矿体定位和形态产状,也控制了其外侧构造岩-岩相带。   相似文献

对取自江苏省淮安市的膨胀土进行了浸水后的膨胀变形和压缩变形试验。在竖向压力25~800 k Pa范围下,研究了不同初始含水率和初始干密度对浸水膨胀变形特性的影响。结果表明:浸水饱和膨胀变形量主要取决于初始干密度,且初始含水率也有一些影响;在相同的含水率下,膨胀变形量随着干密度的增加而增大;在相同干密度条件下,含水率越大,浸水膨胀变形量略微减小。根据各组的固结状态线和浸水饱和膨胀后状态线的交点,得出了介于浸水膨胀和浸水压缩的分界状态线,此线基本上不受初始含水率的影响,进而可以判定不同孔隙比、不同竖向压力下土样处于浸水膨胀还是压缩。最后,基于浸水变形试验结果,提出了一种简便的预测弱膨胀土在不同竖向压力下膨胀变形量的方法。  相似文献

Soils containing expansive clays undergo swelling that can be both detrimental and beneficial in various applications. In the Arabian Gulf coastal region, natural heterogeneous soils containing clay and sand (tills, shales, and clayey sands) support most of the civil infrastructure systems. Likewise, mixes of clay and sand are used for local earthwork construction such as roads and landfills. A clear understanding of the swelling behaviour of such soils is pivotal at the outset of all construction projects. The main objective of this paper was to understand the evolution of swelling with increasing clay content in local soils. A theoretical framework for clay–sand soils was developed using phase relationships. Laboratory investigations comprised of mineralogical composition and geotechnical index properties of the clay and sand and consistency limits, swelling potential, and morphology of clay–sand mixes. Results indicated that soil consistency of mixes of a local expansive clay and an engineered sand depends on the weighted average of the constituents. Mixes with 10% clay through 40% clay capture the transition from a sand-like behaviour to a clay-like behaviour. Influenced by the initial conditions and soil matrix, the swelling potential of the investigated mixes correlated well with soil plasticity (SP(%) = 0.16 (I p)1.188). The parameters sand void ratio and clay–water ratio were found to better explain the behaviour of blended clay–sand soils.  相似文献

传统的湿度应力场理论处理硬石膏围岩膨胀问题时,未反映膨胀特性与湿度状态之间的时变关系。以该理论为基础,设计硬石膏岩膨胀试验:不同初始湿度下的膨胀,不同浸水时间的膨胀,以及膨胀后的抗拉强度测试。试验发现:随初始湿度的增加,硬石膏岩膨胀持续的时间增长,最大膨胀应变和应力增大,终止时的吸水率和结晶水率增加,而自由水率近于0;相同初始湿度下,随浸水时间增加,其吸水率先快速后缓慢增加,结晶水率逐渐增大到接近于吸水率,自由水率逐渐减小到接近于0;随吸水率的增加,其最大轴向膨胀应变、最大侧向膨胀应力和抗拉强度都呈增大趋势。根据试验结果,建立了湿度状态时变系列方程以及含时间效应的膨胀本构模型。  相似文献

This paper presents results from an experimental study performed on natural and compacted expansive soils in different loose and dense states using principally osmotic oedometers. The loose soils showed significant shrinkage, while the dense soils produced a swelling accumulation during the suction cycles. These cycles induced an equilibrium stage, which indicates an elastic behaviour of the samples under suction cycles. At the end of suction cycles, a loading/unloading test was performed on all samples at different constant suctions to define LC (loading collapse) yield curve as well as the newly defined SC (saturation curve) yield curve. Generally, the suction cycles for the looser soils approached the LC and SC yield curves while they became the same at the equilibrium state. For the denser soils producing the swelling strain accumulation, the unique LC and SC curves were activated together. Additionally, we found that at the equilibrium stage, both initially loose and dense samples presented the same mechanical parameters. In other words, the LC or SC yield curves superimposed for different initial states of the samples at the equilibrium stage. Moreover, these compression curves provided sufficient data to propose a simplified model for the mechanical behaviour of the swelling soils at the equilibrium stage.  相似文献

The crystallographic preferred orientation (here referred to as texture) developed in extruded ionic polycrystalline aggregates with the NaCl-structure is studied as a function of extrusion temperature and ionicity of the material. In pure alkali halides and silver chloride a 100111 double fibre texture is found for all extrusion temperatures investigated. In extruded natural rock salt the 100 fibre is replaced by 115 at or below room temperature. The temperature dependence of the intensity of preferred orientation together with microstructural investigations suggest the 100 and 115 components to be primarily due to dynamic recrystallization. The 111 deformation texture agrees with model calculations based on simultaneous slip on both the {110}110 and {100}110 slip systems, generally observed as primary and secondary slip systems in NaCl-type ionic crystals, respectively. Possible applications to the study of the diapirism of salt domes are discussed.  相似文献

为探讨水化状态对饱和压实膨胀土应力-应变-强度特征的影响,以压实度为95%的荆门弱膨胀土为研究对象,开展了2种典型水化状态下的固结与三轴试验,其中第1种水化状态采用常规饱和方法,第2种水化状态为试样自由膨胀至稳定状态。结果表明:(1)受变形约束条件与渗径的影响,不同水化状态下体膨胀率有较大差别;(2)第2种水化状态下的饱和压实膨胀土具有更大的硬化指数λ与膨胀指数κ、较小的弹性剪切模量,其有效内摩擦角为第1种水化状态下的77.2%,体现出膨胀土饱和强度的变动性;(3)2种水化状态下的固结曲线均呈现出明显的屈服现象,其屈服应力分别为123.2 kPa与94.5 kPa;(4)第1种水化状态下,低围压下试样应变软化与剪胀,高围压下应变强化与剪缩;第2种水化状态下试验围压范围内均发生剪缩和轻微的应变软化;(5)2种水化状态下试样在固结与剪切过程中均表现出超固结性,这种超固结性并非完全由先期固结压力所致,而是试样受荷过程中膨胀受到约束造成的;(6)不同水化饱和状态下初始孔隙比不同,膨胀势也不同,膨胀势与外部约束条件、排水条件、应力状态相互作用,造成其应力-应变-强度特征的差异性。  相似文献
