Orogenic disseminated and Carlin gold deposits share much similarity in alteration and mineralization. The disseminated orogenic Zhenyuan Au deposit along the Ailaoshan shear zone, southeastern Tibet, was selected to clarify their difference. The alteration and mineralization from the different lithologies, including meta-quartz sandstone, carbonaceous slate,meta-(ultra)mafic rock, quartz porphyry and lamprophyre were researched.According to the mineral assemblage and replacement relationship in all types of host rocks, two reactions show general control on gold deposition:(1)replacement of earlier magnetite by pyrite and carbonaceous material;(2)alteration of biotite and phlogopite phenocrysts in quartz porphyry and lamprophyre into dolomite/ankerite and sericite.Despite the lamprophyre is volumetrically minor and much less fractured than other host rocks,it contains a large portion of Au reserve, indicating that the chemically active lithology has played a more important role in gold precipitation compared to structure.LA-ICP-MS analysis shows that Au mainly occurs as invisible gold in fine-grained pyrite disseminated in the host rocks, with Au content reaching to 258.95 ppm.The diagenetic core of pyrite in meta-quartz sandstone enriched in Co,Ni,Mo,Ag and Hg is wrapped by hydrothermal pyrite enriched in Cu,As,Sb,Au,Tl,Pb and Bi.Different host rock lithology has much impact on the alteration and mineralization features.Carbonate and sericite in altered lamprophyre show they have higher Mg than those developed in other of host rocks denoting that the carbonate and sericite incorporated Mg from phlogopite phenocrysts in the primary lamprophyre during alteration. The ore fluid activated the diagenetic pyrite in meta-quartz sandstone leading the hydrothermal pyrite enriched in Cu,Mo,Ag,Sb,Te,Hg,Tl,Pb and Bi,but the hydrothermal pyrite in meta-(ultra)mafic rock is enriched in Co and Ni as the meta-(ultra)mafic rock host rock contain high content of Co and Ni.However,Au and As shear similar range in both types of host rocks indicating that these two elements most likely come from the deep source fluid rather than the host rocks. It was shown in the disseminated orogenic gold deposit that similar hydrothermal alteration with mineral assemblage of carbonate(mainly dolomite and ankerite),sericite, pyrite and arsenopyrite develops in all types of host rocks. This is different from the Nevada Carlin type,in which alteration is mainly dissolution and silicification of carbonate host rock.On the other hand,Au mainly occur as invisible gold in both disseminated orogenic and Carlin gold deposits.

The Dest-Or epigenetic Au deposit occurs in a breccia zone within gabbro, basalt and andesite of the Archean Upper Deguisier Formation. It is located approximately 30 km NE of Noranda. Quebec and 2.5 km N of the Porcupine-Destor Fault, an important vertical shear zone that extends east-west for more than 100 km. The known orebody contains 2.44 Mt of ore at 4.29 g/t Au.Host rocks of the Upper Deguisier Formation typically contain 3.6 ppb Au, 0.8 ppm Sb and 4.5 ppm As. The Au values are comparable to those of tholeiitic mafic rocks elsewhere in the world. but Sb and As values are a little higher.Gold values on approximately 30% of the area of the Dest-Or and Bassignac properties define a log-normal distribution with a median at 9.4 ppb Au (P16 at 3.1 and P84 at 27). These are referred to as ore zone halos: they envelop orebody halos which in turn envelop orebodies. An orebody halo can best be defined by close sampling in the immediate vicinity of a known orebody. Around the Dest-Or orebody, this halo is approximately 100 m wide (60 m on the hanging wall and 40 m on the footwall), and it has a median value at 37 ppb Au (P16 at 17 and P84 at 74).Gold enrichment in the orebody is 1900 times background value. There are also lesser but significant Sb and As enrichments (20 /sX each). High W values occur in the ore ( > 30 ppm W), but background values were too low ( <5 ppm) to be established with confidence.Gold analyses in the 0.2–100 ppb range can be gainfully used in the search for blind gold ore deposits: As, Sb and W can also be used, but anomalies are less extensive and enrichment is also less pronounced.

Orogenic gold-bearing quartz veins in the middle Tertiary Bullendale Fault Zone, New Zealand were mined historically for coarse gold in a narrow zone (ca. 5 m thick). However, recent drilling has revealed a broad hydrothermal alteration zone extending into the host schist, in which disseminated sulphide and gold mineralisation has occurred. The evidence of alteration is first seen over 150 m across strike from the fault zone, and the best-developed alteration halo is about 50 m wide. The extent and intensity of alteration is strongly controlled by local structures that developed during regional Tertiary kink folding of the pervasively foliated and fissile metasedimentary schist host. The earliest structures are foliation-parallel microshears (micron to millimeter scale) formed during flexural-slip folding. Later, but related, structures are predominantly normal faults and associated shear zones that have formed extensional sites during the regional folding event. All these structures facilitated hydrothermal fluid penetration and rock alteration, with localised vein formation and brecciation. Where fluid has followed structures, metamorphic chlorite, phengite, and titanite have been altered to hydrothermal ankerite, rutile, and muscovite or kaolinite. Ankerite with Fe/(Fe + Mg) < 0.4 formed in host rocks with Fe/(Fe + Mg) of 0.6, and iron released by ankerite alteration possibly formed pyrite and arsenopyrite that host disseminated gold. Fault zones were extensively silicified and veined with quartz, albite, sulphides, and gold. Host rocks have wide compositional variations because of centimeter-scale metamorphic segregation. However, the alteration halo is characterised by elevated CO2 and S, as measured by loss-on-ignition (doubled to ca. 6 wt.%), elevated As (100–10,000 ppm), and weakly elevated Sb (up to 14 ppm). Strontium is elevated and Ba depleted in many altered rocks, so Sr/Ba ratio increases from < 1 (host rocks) to > 3 in the most altered and silicified rocks. Many altered and mineralised rocks have low Sr/Ba (< 0.5) as well. The subtle geochemical signature is not useful as a vector to ore because of the strong microstructural control on alteration. Likewise, there is no evidence for spatial mineralogical zonation across the alteration halo, although the most intense alteration is centred on the main fault zone, and intensity of alteration is controlled by microstructures at all scales. As documented in previous studies, hydrothermal alteration haloes enlarge the exploration target for some orogenic gold deposits, and may include disseminated gold, as in this Bullendale example.

The devolatilization model of the metasomatized lithospheric mantle without pre-enriched gold has been proposed to account for the giant gold mineralization. An excellent example is the world-class Jiaodong gold province with >5000 tonnes Au resources in the eastern North China Craton. The auriferous fluid transport and gold enrichment during wallrock alterations are two vital processes to determine the giant gold mineralization formation in this province. However, the effects of the fluid-rock interaction with alterations on the auriferous fluid transport and gold enrichment still keep poor understanding, which leads the above model to be imperfect. The giant Jiaojia goldfield in this province recorded a wallrock alteration evolution from K-feldspar alteration to pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration, and some parts of the latter can become gold orebodies when the gold grade is >1 ppm. This study conducts thermodynamic fluid-rock interaction modeling to reveal auriferous fluid transport and coupled relationship between gold enrichment and alteration mineral assemblage based on the alteration-mineralization and ore fluid characteristics of the goldfield. The modeling of fluid-rock interaction with cooling indicates the transformation of Au-Cl complexes to Au-S complexes combined with the total sulfur concentration decrease by pyrite precipitation when cooling from ∼460 °C can trigger the dispersive gold precipitation, which should hinder the gold long-range transport to lower ambient temperature. The high oxygen fugacity at >400 °C can enhance Au-Cl complexes stability, and the low pH can maintain high total sulfur concentration in the auriferous fluid, both of which facilitate the long-range gold transport to a lower-temperature environment. The auriferous fluid would acquire higher pH by the buffering of feldspars or sericite, which was beneficial for the high-efficiency precipitations of pyrite and gold. The ankerite-siderite assemblage without pyrophyllite in the pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration zone indicates that a cumulative fluid to rock mass ratio (f/r) of 3.8–4.8 should be needed for the transformation from K-feldspar alteration to pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration according to the fluid-rock interaction modeling at 300 °C and 2000 bar. In the case of auriferous fluids with ≤200 ppb Au concentration, the single fluid-rock interaction can only elevate the gold grade to ≤0.69–0.87 ppm in the pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration zone at f/r 3.8–4.8. Therefore, the fracture-induced fluid flow coupled with fluid-rock interaction is proposed to the prerequisite to elevate the gold grade to >1 ppm in the pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration zone. The metasomatized lithospheric mantle volume for the required ore fluid and Au in the Jiaodong province is estimated according to the modeling results and alteration-mineralization characteristics, which provides a link between the mantle without abnormal Au enrichment and the alteration-mineralization processes.

Orogenic Gold Mineralization in the Qolqoleh Deposit, Northwestern Iran
The Qolqoleh gold deposit is located in the northwestern part of the Sanandai‐Sirjan Zone, northwest of Iran. Gold mineralization in the Qolqoleh deposit is almost entirely confined to a series of steeply dipping ductile–brittle shear zones generated during Late Cretaceous–Tertiary continental collision between the Afro‐Arabian and the Iranian microcontinent. The host rocks are Mesozoic volcano‐sedimentary sequences consisting of felsic to mafic metavolcanics, which are metamorphosed to greenschist facies, sericite and chlorite schists. The gold orebodies were found within strong ductile deformation to late brittle deformation. Ore‐controlling structure is NE–SW‐trending oblique thrust with vergence toward south ductile–brittle shear zone. The highly strained host rocks show a combination of mylonitic and cataclastic microstructures, including crystal–plastic deformation and grain size reduction by recrystalization of quartz and mica. The gold orebodies are composed of Au‐bearing highly deformed and altered mylonitic host rocks and cross‐cutting Au‐ and sulfide‐bearing quartz veins. Approximately half of the mineralization is in the form of dissemination in the mylonite and the remainder was clearly emplaced as a result of brittle deformation in quartz–sulfide microfractures, microveins and veins. Only low volumes of gold concentration was introduced during ductile deformation, whereas, during the evident brittle deformation phase, competence contrasts allowed fracturing to focus on the quartz–sericite domain boundaries of the mylonitic foliation, thus permitting the introduction of auriferous fluid to create disseminated and cross‐cutting Au‐quartz veins. According to mineral assemblages and alteration intensity, hydrothermal alteration could be divided into three zones: silicification and sulfidation zone (major ore body); sericite and carbonate alteration zone; and sericite–chlorite alteration zone that may be taken to imply wall‐rock interaction with near neutral fluids (pH 5–6). Silicified and sulfide alteration zone is observed in the inner parts of alteration zones. High gold grades belong to silicified highly deformed mylonitic and ultramylonitic domains and silicified sulfide‐bearing microveins. Based on paragenetic relationships, three main stages of mineralization are recognized in the Qolqoleh gold deposit. Stage I encompasses deposition of large volumes of milky quartz and pyrite. Stage II includes gray and buck quartz, pyrite and minor calcite, sphalerite, subordinate chalcopyrite and gold ores. Stage III consists of comb quartz and calcite, magnetite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and gold ores. Studies on regional geology, ore geology and ore‐forming stages have proved that the Qolqoleh deposit was formed in the compression–extension stage during the Late Cretaceous–Tertiary continental collision in a ductile–brittle shear zone, and is characterized by orogenic gold deposits.

Vein-type gold deposits in the Atud area are related to the metagabbro–diorite complex that occurred in Gabal Atud in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt. This gold mineralization is located within quartz veins and intense hydrothermal alteration haloes along the NW–SE brittle–ductile shear zone, as well as along the contacts between them. By using the mass balance calculations, this work is to determine the mass/volume gains and losses of the chemical components during the hydrothermal alteration processes in the studied deposits. In addition, we report new data on the mineral chemistry of the alteration minerals to define the condition of the gold deposition and the mineralizing fluid based on the convenient geothermometers. Two generations of quartz veins include the mineralized grayish-to-white old vein (trending NW–SE), and the younger, non-mineralized milky white vein (trending NE–SW). The ore minerals associated with gold are essentially arsenopyrite and pyrite, with chalcopyrite, sphalerite, enargite, and goethite forming during three phases of mineralization; first, second (main ore), and third (supergene) phases. Three main hydrothermal alteration zones of mineral assemblages were identified (zones 1–3), placed around mineralized and non-mineralized quartz veins in the underground levels. The concentrations of Au, Ag, and Cu are different from zone to zone having 25–790 ppb, 0.7–69.6 ppm, and 6–93.8 ppm; 48.6–176.1 ppb, 0.9–12.3 ppm, and 39.6–118.2 ppm; and 53.9–155.4 ppb, 0.7–3.4 ppm, and 0.2–79 ppm for zones 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The mass balance calculations and isocon diagrams (calculated using the GEOISO-Windows program) revealed the gold to be highly associated with the main mineralized zone as well as sericitization/kaolinitization and muscovitization in zone 1 more than in zones 2 and 3. The sericite had a higher muscovite component in all analyzed flakes (average XMs = 0.89), with 0.10%–0.55% phengite content in wall rocks and 0.13%–0.29% phengite content in mineralized quartz veins. Wall rocks had higher calcite (CaCO3) contents and lower MgCO3 and FeCO3 contents than the quartz veins. The chlorite flakes in the altered wall rocks were composed of pycnochlorite and ripidolite, with estimated formation temperatures of 289–295 °C and 301–312 °C, respectively. Albite has higher albite content (95.08%–99.20%) which occurs with chlorite in zone 3.

Geochemical anomaly separation and identification using the number–size (N–S) model at Bardaskan area, NE Iran is studied in this paper. Lithogeochemical data were used in this study which was conducted for the exploration for Au and Cu mineralization and enrichments in Bardaskan area. There are two major mineralization phases concluded epithermal gold and a disseminated systems. N–S log–log plots for Cu, Au, Sb, and As illustrated multifractal natures. Several anomalies at local scale were identified for Au (32 ppb), Cu (28 ppm), As (11 ppm), and Sb (0.8 ppm) and the obtained results suggest existence of local Au and Cu anomalies whose magnitudes generally are above 158 and 354 ppm, respectively. The most important mineralization events are responsible for presence of Au and Cu at grades above 1,778 and 8,912 ppm. The study reveals threshold values for Au and Cu are a consequence of the occurrence of anomalous accumulations of phyllic and silicification alteration zones and metamorphic rocks especially in tuffaceous sandstones and sericite schist types. The obtained results were correlated with fault distribution patterns, revealing a positive direct correlation between mineralization in anomalous areas and the faults present in the mineralized system.

The Late Archaean Bronzewing lode-gold deposit is in the Yandal greenstone belt, Western Australia. It is located in a 500-m-wide, N–S trending, structural corridor consisting of an anastomosing set of brittle–ductile shear zones and is chiefly hosted by tholeiitic basalts, which are metamorphosed at mid- to upper-greenschist facies. Syn-peak metamorphic alteration surround all ore bodies, and alteration extends laterally for ≤80 m from individual mineralised structures. Individual alteration haloes partially overlap and form a >1.5-km-long and ≤300-m-wide domain. The alteration sequence, studied here at 140 m below the present undisturbed surface, comprises distal calcite–chlorite–albite–quartz, intermediate calcite–dolomite–chlorite–muscovite–albite–quartz and proximal ankerite–dolomite–muscovite–albite–quartz–pyrite zones. Mass transfer calculations indicate that chemical changes during alteration include enrichment of Ag, Au, Ba, Bi, CO2, K, Rb, S, Sb, Te and W, and depletion of Na, Sr and Y. The elements Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Ti, V, Zn and Zr are immobile. The degree of chemical change increases with proximity to gold ore zones. In addition, abundant quartz veins indicate substantial silica mobility during the hydrothermal event, although there is no large relative silica loss or gain in the host rock. The broadest anomaly surrounding the Bronzewing gold deposit is defined by tellurium (>10 ppb) which, if it is a hydrothermal anomaly, extends beyond the 400 × 600 m study area. Anomalous values for CO2, K, Rb and Sb also define wider zones than does anomalous gold (>4 ppb), although even the lithogeochemical gold anomaly extends across strike for as much as 80 m away from ore and >600 m along the N–S strike of the shear zone corridor. Also carbonation and sericitisation indices outline large exploration targets at the Bronzewing deposit. Sericitisation indices define anomalies that extend for tens of metres beyond visible potassic alteration, whereas the anomalies defined by the carbonation indices do not extend beyond visible carbonation. None of the individual alteration indices or pathfinder elements are able to define consistent gradients towards ore. However, the respective dimensions of individual geochemical anomalies can be used as an extensive, although stepwise, vector towards ore. This sequence is, from species with broadest dispersion first, as follows: Te > CO2/Ca ≥ Sb, 3K/Al, Rb/Ti ≥ Au, W > Y/Ti (depletion) > Ag ≥ Bronzewing ore.

The Golden Pride gold deposit (∼3 Moz) is located in the central part of the Nzega Greenstone Belt at the southern margin of the Lake Victoria Goldfields in Tanzania. It represents an inferred Late Archaean, orogenic gold deposit and is hosted in intensely deformed meta-sedimentary rocks in the hanging wall of the approximately E–W striking Golden Pride Shear Zone. The hanging-wall sequence also includes felsic (quartz porphyritic) to mafic (lamprophyric) intrusions, as well as banded iron formations. Hydrothermal alteration phases associated with mineralisation are dominated by sericite and chlorite. Two main ore types can be distinguished, chlorite and silica ore, both occupying dilational sites and structural intersections in the hanging wall of the main shear zone. Sulphide minerals in both ore types include pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, sulphosalts and Ni–Co–Bi sulphides. Gold and tellurides are late in the paragenetic sequence and associated with a secondary phase of pyrrhotite deposition. Sulphur isotope compositions range from −6 to 7 per mil and are interpreted to reflect contributions from two distinct sources to the mineralising fluids in the Golden Pride gold deposit. A redox change, potentially induced by the intrusion of mafic melts, together with structural elements in the hanging wall of the Golden Pride Shear Zone, are interpreted to be the main controls on gold mineralisation in this deposit.

The nature of secondary geochemical dispersion of As, Sb, Hg and Bi in soil and ground water of the semi-arid, tropical, Archaean, auriferous, Hutti-Maski greenstone belt has been investigated for identification of appropriate geochemical techniques for Au exploration in similar terrains. Results indicate that the <180 μm size-fraction of C-horizon soil is an appropriate sampling medium for delineating pedogeochemical anomalies of As, Sb, Hg and Bi related to gold mineralisation. These pedogeochemical anomalies along with anomalous values of alkalinity, chloride, sulphate, As and Sb in groundwater are controlled significantly by primary mineralisation located along shear zones in the greenstone belt. Arsenic anomalies in soil are broad, whereas, those of Sb and Bi are restricted to narrow zones directly over mineralised areas. In contrast, Hg anomalies around known mineralised areas are irregular and do not clearly demarcate the mineralised areas. The study indicates that anomalies of As, Sb and Hg in soil are principally hydromorphic, whereas those of Bi are clastic. The study recommends use of groundwater sampling at 2–3 km spacing with routine analysis of chloride, sulphate and alkalinity along with As and Sb in the first phase. This may be followed up with sampling of C-horizon of soils on a 1 km square grid for As-anomalies. Arsenic-anomalous areas may be sampled for As, Sb, Hg and Bi on a 500 m square grid for detailed exploration.

The Nyasirori gold deposit, located in the middle-western end of the Musoma-Mara Archean greenstone belt in Tanzania, is a tectonic altered rock type gold deposit controlled by shear tectonic zone. This work conducted high-precision ground magnetic measurements to delineate fault structures and favorable prospecting targets, utilized induced polarization (IP) intermediate gradient to roughly determine the distribution and extension of the tectonic altered zone and gold ore (mineralized) bodies, and further carried out IP sounding and magnetotelluric sounding to locate the tectonic altered zone and gold ore (mineralized) bodies. The anomalous gradient belt of the combination of positive and negative micromagnetic measurements reflects the detail of shallow surface tectonic alteration zone and gold mineralization body. Micromagnetic profile anomalies indicate the spatial location and occurrence of concealed tectonic alteration zone and gold (mineralized) ore bodies. Soil geochemical measurements indicate that the ore-forming element Au correlates well with As and Sb, and As and Sb anomalies have a good indication to gold orebodies. Based on the multi-source geological-geophysical-geochemical information of the Nyasirori gold deposit, this work established an integrated prospecting model and proposed a set of geophysical and geochemical methods for optimizing prospecting targets.

Orogenic, lode gold mineralisation in the South Eastern Desert of Egypt is related to quartz veins spatially and temporally associated with conjugate NW- and NE-trending brittle–ductile shear zones. These structures are assumed to be linked to a regional transpression deformation which occurred late in the tectonic evolution of the area. In the Betam deposit, gold is confined to quartz(±carbonate) veins cutting through tectonised metagabbro and metasedimentary rocks in the vicinity of small granite intrusions. The ore bodies contain ubiquitous pyrite and arsenopyrite, in addition to minor disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, tetrahedrite and rare gold/electrum. New ore microscopy and electron microprobe studies indicate that most free-milling Au is intimately associated with the late-paragenetic galena–tetrahedrite–chalcopyrite assemblage. An early Fe–As sulphide assemblage, however, shows minor traces of refractory gold. New mineralogical and geochemical data are used to better constrain on possible element dispersions for exploration uses. This study indicates that parameters that most consistently define primary dispersion of gold in the mine area include pervasive silicification, sericite and carbonate alteration. The trace element data of gold lodes reflect a systematic dispersion of gold and certain base metals. Low-cost, extensive exploration programs may use elevated concentrations of Ag, Sb, Cu and Pb as tracers for Au ore zones in the Betam mine area and surroundings.

金的迁移形式可能存在AuH3SiO04、Au(HS)2-、H2Au(Sb,As)S02和HAu(Sb,As)S3-等多种迁移方式。
