Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Molecular hydrogen is the dominant chemical species in the atmospheres of the giant planets. Because of their low masses, neutral and ionized hydrogen atoms are the dominant species in the high atmospheres of many planets. Finally, protons are the principal heavy component of the solar wind.Here we present a critical evaluation of the current state of understanding of the chemical reaction rates and collision cross sections for several important hydrogen collision processes in planetary atmospheres, ionospheres, and magnetospheres. Accurate ab initio quantum theory will play an important role. The collision processes are grouped as follows:
(a)
H++H charge transfer,
(b)
H++H2(v) charge transfer and vibrational relaxation, and
(c)
H2(v,J)+H2 vibrational, rotational, and ortho-para relaxation.
In each case we provide explicit representations as tabulations or compact formulas. Particularly important conclusions are that H++H2(v) collisions are more likely to result in vibrational relaxation than charge transfer and H2 ortho-para conversion is at least an order-of-magnitude faster than previously assumed.  相似文献

We used the NIRSPEC instrument on the Keck-2 telescope atop Mauna Kea, HI to observe Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) in a Target of Opportunity campaign on UT 2001 July 9.5, 10.5 August 4.4, 10.5. We measured seven organic parent volatiles (C2H6, C2H2, HCN, CH4, CO, CH3OH, H2CO) simultaneously with H2O. We obtained absolute production rates and relative abundances for parent volatiles, and also measured rotational temperatures for several of these species. The chemical composition of C/2001 A2 differs substantially from any comet we have observed to date. The abundances we measure (relative to H2O) for C2H6, C2H2, HCN, and CH3OH are enriched by a factor of ∼2 to 3 in C/2001 A2 compared with most comets in our database. Other molecular species were detected within the typical range of measured abundances. C/2001 A2 presented a unique opportunity to study the chemistry of a fragmenting comet where pristine areas are exposed to the Sun.  相似文献

The neutral gas environment of a comet is largely influenced by dissociation of parent molecules created at the surface of the comet and collisions of all the involved species. We compare the results from a kinetic model of the neutral cometary environment with measurements from the Neutral Mass Spectrometer and the Dust Impact Detection System onboard the Giotto spacecraft taken during the fly-by at Comet 1P/Halley in 1986. We also show that our model is in good agreement with contemporaneous measurements obtained by the International Ultraviolet Explorer, sounding rocket experiments, and various ground based observations.The model solves the Boltzmann equation with a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo technique (Tenishev, V., Combi, M., Davidsson, B. [2008]. Astrophys. J. 685, 659-677) by tracking trajectories of gas molecules and dust grains under the influence of the comet’s weak gravity field with momentum exchange among particles modeled in a probabilistic manner. The cometary nucleus is considered to be the source of dust and the parent species (in our model: H2O, CO, H2CO, CO2, CH3OH, C2H6, C2H4, C2H2, HCN, NH3, and CH4) in the coma. Subsequently our model also tracks the corresponding dissociation products (H, H2, O, OH, C, CH, CH2, CH3, N, NH, NH2, C2, C2H, C2H5, CN, and HCO) from the comet’s surface all the way out to 106 km.As a result we are able to further constrain cometary the gas production rates of CO (13%), CO2 (2.5%), and H2CO (1.5%) relative to water without invoking unknown extended sources.  相似文献

Volatile organic emissions were detected post-perihelion in the long-period Comet C/2006 M4 (SWAN) in October and November 2006. Our study combines target-of-opportunity infrared observations using the Cryogenic Echelle Spectrometer (CSHELL) at the NASA-IRTF 3-m telescope, and millimeter wavelength observations using the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) 12-m telescope. Five parent volatiles were measured with CSHELL (H2O, CO, CH3OH, CH4, and C2H6), and two additional species (HCN and CS) were measured with the ARO 12-m. These revealed highly depleted CO and somewhat enriched CH3OH compared with abundances observed in the dominant group of long-period (Oort cloud) comets in our sample and similar to those observed recently in Comet 8P/Tuttle. This may indicate highly efficient H-atom addition to CO at very low temperature (∼10-20 K) on the surfaces of interstellar (pre-cometary) grains. Comet C/2006 M4 had nearly “normal” C2H6 and CH4, suggesting a processing history similar to that experienced by the dominant group. When compared with estimated water production at the time of the millimeter observations, HCN was slightly depleted compared with the normal abundance in comets based on IR observations but was consistent with the majority of values from the millimeter. The ratio CS/HCN in C/2006 M4 was within the range measured in ten comets at millimeter wavelengths. The higher apparent H-atom conversion efficiency compared with most comets may indicate that the icy grains incorporated into C/2006 M4 were exposed to higher H-atom densities, or alternatively to similar densities but for a longer period of time.  相似文献

C/2006 P1 McNaught is a dynamically new comet from the Oort cloud that passed very close to the Sun, driving overall volatile production rates up to about 1031 molecules s−1. Post-perihelion observations were obtained in a target-of-opportunity campaign using the CSHELL instrument at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii, on UT 2007 January 27 and 28. Eight parent volatiles (H2O, CH4, C2H2, C2H6, HCN, CO, NH3, H2CO) and two daughter fragments (OH and NH2) were detected, enabling the determination of a rotational temperature and production rate for H2O on UT January 27 and absolute and relative production rates for all the detected parent species on UT January 28. The chemical composition measured in the coma suggests that this close perihelion passage stripped off processed outer surface layers, likely exposing relatively fresh primordial material during these observations. The post-perihelion abundances we measure for CO and CH4 (relative to H2O) are slightly depleted while C2H2, NH2 and possibly NH3 are enhanced when compared to the overall comet population. Measured abundances for other detected molecular species were within the range typically observed in comets.  相似文献

The scientific rationale of the ROY multi-satellite mission addresses multiscale investigations of plasma processes in the key magnetospheric regions with strong plasma gradients, turbulence and magnetic field annihilation in the range from electron inertial length to MHD scales.The main scientific aims of ROY mission include explorations of:
(a)
turbulence on a non-uniform background as a keystone for transport processes;
(b)
structures and jets in plasma flows associated with anomalously large concentration of kinetic energy; their impact on the energy balance and boundary formation;
(c)
transport barriers: plasma separation and mixing, Alfvenic collapse of magnetic field lines and turbulent dissipation of kinetic energy;
(d)
self-organized versus forced reconnection of magnetic field lines;
(e)
collisionless shocks, plasma discontinuities and associated particle acceleration processes.
In the case of autonomous operation, 4 mobile spacecrafts of about 200 kg mass with 60 kg payload equipped with electro-reactive plasma engines will provide 3D measurements at the scales of 100-10000 km and simultaneous 1D measurements at the scales 10-1000 km. The latter smaller scales will be scanned with the use of radio-tomography (phase-shift density measurements within the cone composed of 1 emitting and 3 receiving spacecrafts).We also discuss different opportunities for extra measurement points inside the ROY mission for simultaneous measurements at up to 3 scales for the common international fleet.Combined influence of intermittent turbulence and reconnection on the geomagnetic tail and on the nonlinear dynamics of boundary layers will be explored in situ with fast techniques including particle devices under development, providing plasma moments down to 30 ms resolution.We propose different options for joint measurements in conjunction with the SCOPE and other missions:
simultaneous sampling of low- and high-latitudes magnetopause, bow shock and geomagnetic tail at the same local time;
tracing of magnetosheath streamlines from the bow shock to near-Earth geomagnetic tail;
passing “through” the SCOPE on the inbound orbit leg;
common measurements (with SCOPE and other equatorial spacecraft) at distances of ∼ few thousand km for durations of ∼several hours per orbit.
The orbit options and scientific payload of possible common interest are discussed in this work, including FREGAT cargo opportunities for extra payload launching and the “Swarm” campaigns with ejection of nano- and pico-satellites.  相似文献

We detected CH4 in eight Oort cloud comets using high-dispersion (λλ∼2×104) infrared spectra acquired with CSHELL at NASA's IRTF and NIRSPEC at the W.M. Keck Observatory. The observed comets were C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake), C/1999 H1 (Lee), C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley), C/1999 S4 (LINEAR), C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR), C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), and 153/P Ikeya-Zhang (C/2002 C1). We detected the R0 and R1 lines of the ν3 vibrational band of CH4 near 3.3 μm in each comet, with the exception of McNaught-Hartley where only the R0 line was measured. In order to obtain production rates, a fluorescence model has been developed for this band of CH4. We report g-factors for the R0 and R1 transitions at several rotational temperatures typically found in comet comae and relevant to our observations. Using g-factors appropriate to Trot as determined from HCN, CO and/or H2O and C2H6, CH4 production rates and mixing ratios are presented. Abundances of CH4/H2O are compared among our existing sample of comets, in the context of establishing their place of origin. In addition, CH4 is compared to native CO, another hypervolatile species, and no correlation is found among the comets observed.  相似文献

We have identified a number of gullies that could be aqueous in origin near or at the rim of several impact craters in Utopia Planitia and western Elysium Planitia (30.0°-59.0° N; 241.0°-291.0° W). Based on the sharpness of their incisions and the general absence of superposed craters, we ascribe a relatively recent origin to the gullies. Scalloped depressions are commonplace throughout the region, as well as on the crater walls, rims and floors near the areas of gully issuance. Occasionally, the depressions cross-cut the gully debris-aprons, suggesting that the formation of some depressions is even more recent than that of the gullies. Previous research has proposed that the depressions are collapse basins formed by thermokarst processes. On Earth, thermokarst landforms occur in areas of low gradient topography where the permanently frozen ground (permafrost) is ice rich and has undergone a change in thermal equilibrium. This change can be triggered by long-term or episodic/cyclic climate change and accompanying rises in mean temperatures towards ∼0 °C as well as by rises in seasonally sustained summer temperatures well above ∼0 °C. In order to explain the origin of the rim or near-rim gullies we invoke high obliquity and the possibility that this region of Mars experienced obliquity-driven rises in temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity sufficient to keep surface water and near-surface ground-ice stable for extended periods of time. We propose that gully formation is closely related to local freeze-thaw processes that, in turn, generate a thermokarst landscape (of which the gullies are a part). This geological and climatological scenario comprises the following steps:
1.
An inundation of meltwater at high obliquity (due to the thawing of an atmospherically-deposited snowpack or ice-sheet) and the subsequent saturation of the underlying regolith to tens of metres of depth.
2.
Loss of water on the surface, perhaps as obliquity decreases slightly, followed by the progressive freezing of the saturated regolith; this creates an aggrading mass of ice-rich regolith.
3.
Obliquity-induced temperature rises that engender the thaw, drainage and partial evaporation of the near-surface, ice-rich regolith.
4.
Localised formation of thermokarst collapse-basins (alases), as water is evacuated from these basins.
5.
Formation of gullies near, or at, some impact-crater rims as the result of meltwater migration from nearby alases through the thawed regolith to the areas of gully issuance.
Although the plains' materials in this region are in part very old (possibly Hesperian or even Noachian), the mantling deposits and their deformation by thermokarst processes appears to be relatively young. This suggests that recent climatic conditions could have been episodically warmer and wetter than had been previously thought.  相似文献

High resolution infrared spectra of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) were obtained during 2-5 March 1997 UT from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, when the comet was at r≈1.0 AU from the Sun pre-perihelion. Emission lines of CH4, C2H6, HCN, C2H2, CH3OH, H2O, CO, and OH were detected. The rotational temperature of CH4 in the inner coma was Trot=110±20 K. Spatial profiles of CH4, C2H6, and H2O were consistent with release solely from the nucleus. The centroid of the CO emission was offset from that of the dust continuum and H2O. Spatial profiles of the CO lines were much broader than those of the other molecules and asymmetric. We estimate the CO production rate using a simplified outflow model: constant, symmetric outflow from the peak position. A model of the excitation of CO that includes optical depth effects using an escape probability method is presented. Optical depth effects are not sufficient to explain the broad spatial extent. Using a parent+extended-source model, the broad extent of the CO lines can be explained by CO being produced mostly (∼90% on 5 March) from an extended source in the coma. The CO rotational temperature was near 100 K. Abundances relative to H2O (in percent) were 1.1±0.3 (CH4), 0.39±0.10 (C2H6), 0.18±0.04 (HCN), 0.17±0.04 (C2H2), 1.7±0.5 (CH3OH), and 37-41 (CO, parent+extended source). These are roughly comparable to those obtained for other long-period comets also observed in the infrared, though CO appears to vary.  相似文献

Recent attempts using high resolution spectra to detect N+2 in several comets were unsuccessful [Cochran, A.L., Cochran, W.D., Baker, E.S., 2000. Icarus 146, 583-593; Cochran, A.L., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L165-L168]. The upper limits on N+2 in comparison with the positively detected CO+ for Comets C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp, 122P/1995 S1 de Vico and 153P/2002 C1 Ikeya-Zhang range between . Ar was not detected in three recent comets [Weaver, H.A., Feldman, P.D., Combi, M.R., Krasnopolsky, V., Lisse, C.M., Shemansky, D.E., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L95-L98], with upper limits of Ar/CO<(3.4-7.8)×10−2 for Comets C/1999 T1 McNaught-Hartley, C/2001 A2 LINEAR and C/2000 WM1 LINEAR. The Ar detected by Stern et al. [Stern, S.A., Slater, D.C., Festou, M.C., Parker, J.Wm., Gladstone, G.R., A'Hearn, M.F., Wilkinson, E., 2000. Astrophys. J. 544, L169-L172] for Comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp, gives a ratio Ar/CO=7.25×10−2, which was not confirmed by Cosmovici et al. [Cosmovici, C.B., Bratina, V., Schwarz, G., Tozzi, G., Mumma, M.J., Stalio, R., 2006. Astrophys. Space Sci. 301, 135-143]. Trying to solve the two problems, we studied experimentally the trapping of N2+CO+Ar in amorphous water ice, at 24-30 K. CO was found to be trapped in the ice 20-70 times more efficiently than N2 and with the same efficiency as Ar. The resulting Ar/CO ratio of 1.2×10−2 is consistent with Weaver et al.'s [Weaver, H.A., Feldman, P.D., Combi, M.R., Krasnopolsky, V., Lisse, C.M., Shemansky, D.E., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L95-L98] non-detection of Ar. However, with an extreme starting value for N2/CO = 0.22 in the region where the ice grains which agglomerated to produce comet nuclei were formed, the expected N2/CO ratio in the cometary ice should be 6.6×10−3, much higher than its non-detection limit.  相似文献

We present the results of a program of comet long-slit spectroscopy with the Kast Dual Spectrograph on the 3-m Shane Telescope at Lick Observatory. A total of 26 comets, from a variety of dynamical families, were observed on 39 different nights from 1996 to 2007. A new statistical method extracted the twilight sky from comet frames, because traditional sky subtraction techniques were inadequate. Because previously published Haser model parent and daughter scale lengths did not fit the data well, unbiased ranges of scale lengths were searched for the best-fitting pairs. Coma gas production rates for OH, CN, C2, C3, NH, NH2, and OH confirmed the widely reported carbon-chain depletion for a sub-class of comets, most notably high-perihelion Jupiter-family comets observed at rh > 1.5 AU, with different behaviors for C2 and C3. Our long-slit spectroscopy data was also adapted for the A(θ) dust production parameter. The assumption that A(θ) is constant throughout the nucleus was not upheld. High dust-to-gas ratios for comets with large perihelia were not a selection effect, and suggest that the dust was released earlier in the formation of the coma than the gas. The dust-to-gas ratio did not exhibit any evolutionary traces between different comet dynamical families. The comet survey illuminates the diversity among comets, including the unusually carbon poor Comet 96P/Machholz.  相似文献

The results of the multiaperture photometry of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 1991 T2 in the pre-perihelion and P/deVico in the post-perihelion period with the narrowband CN, C2 and Blue Continuum (BC) IHW filters are presented. A Haser model of the molecular coma was used for the determination of the parent and daughter scale-lengths and production rates of the radicals. The comets showed some substantial differences between their parent scale-lengths. The CN parent scale-length (at 1.0 AU) was 16×103 km for Comet Shoemaker-Levy and 39×103 for P/deVico, the C2 parent scale-lengths were respectively 29×103 and 54×103 km. Such divergences could be interpreted in the frame of different scenarios of emission of cometary parents, either from a nucleus or from a volume source. The daughter scale-lengths for these comets were quite similar, namely: 306×103 and 318×103 km for CN and 69×103 and 66×103 km for C2. We determined the Afρ parameter for apertures of different radii. A Monte Carlo model of the dust coma was used to obtain the dust ejection velocity. It was of the order of 0.1 km s−1 for both comets. The power index of the distribution of the β-parameter of dust particles (ratio of light pressure to the solar gravitation) was of the order of 3 for C/Shoemaker-Levy and close to 2 for P/deVico. The dependence on heliocentric distance (rh) of the radical and dust production rates for P/deVico in the range of 0.7-1.0 AU was described by the power law function with a power index equal to: 5.55±0.14 for CN, 5.70±0.24 for C2 and 5.22±0.19 for dust. Relative abundances of the dynamically new Comet Shoemaker-Levy and short-period P/deVico were quite similar with an enhancement of C2 comparing with standard values taken from A'Hearn et al. (1995).  相似文献

We present millimeter-wave observations of HNCO, HC3N, SO, NH2CHO, H13CN, and H3O+ in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)obtained in February–April, 1997 with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). HNCO, first detected at the CSO in comet C/1996B2 (Hyakutake), is securely confirmed in comet Hale-Bopp via observations of three rotational transitions. The derived abundance with respect to H2O is (4-13) × 10-4. HC3N, SO, and NH2CHO are detected for the first time in a comet. The fractional abundance of HC3N based on observations of three rotational lines is (1.9 ± 0.2) × 10-4. Four transitions of SO are detected and the derived fractional abundance, (2-8) ×10-3, is higher than the upper limits derived from UV observations of previous comets. Observations of NH2CHO imply a fractional abundance of (1-8) × 10-4. H3O is detected for the first time from the ground. The H13CN (3-2)transition is also detected and the derived HCN/H13CN abundance ratio is 90 ± 15, consistent with the terrestrial12C/13C ratio. In addition, a number of other molecular species are detected, including HNC, OCS, HCO+, CO+, and CN(the last two are first detections in a comet at radio wavelengths). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The origin of CN radicals in comets is not completely understood so far. We present a study of CN and HCN production rates and CN Haser scale lengths showing that: (1) at heliocentric distances larger than 3 AU, CN radicals could be entirely produced by HCN photolysis; (2) closer to the Sun, for a fraction of comets CN production rates are higher than HCN ones whereas (3) in the others, CN distribution cannot be explained by the HCN photolysis although CN and HCN production rates seem to be similar. Thus, when the comets are closer than 3 AU to the Sun, an additional process to the HCN photolysis seems to be required to explain the CN density in some comets.The photolysis of HC3N or C2N2 could explain the CN origin. But the HC3N production rate is probably too low to reproduce CN density profile, even if uncertainties on its photolysis leave the place for all possible conclusions. The presence of C2N2 in comets is a reliable hypothesis to explain the CN origin; thus, its detection is a challenging issue. Since C2N2 is very difficult to detect from ground-based observations, only in situ measurements or space observations could determine the contribution of this compound in the CN origin.Another hypothesis is a direct production of CN radicals by the photo- or thermal degradation of complex refractory organic compounds present on cometary grains. This process could explain the spatial profile of CN inside jets and the discrepancy noted in the isotopic ratio 14N/15N between CN and HCN. Laboratory studies of the thermal and UV-induced degradation of solid nitrogenated compounds are required to model and validate this hypothesis.  相似文献

Three methods permitting to characterize space and onboard spacecraft radiation environment have been developed and/or upgraded in our laboratories: MDU equipment with a semiconductor detector as sensitive element devoted to register energy deposition spectra in the Si-diode; a spectrometer of the linear energy transfer (LET) based on chemically etched polyallyldiglycolcarbonate (PADC) track etch detectors (TED); and thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) with different dependences of relative TL yield on the LET of particles transferring their energy in them.We have used all these types of dosimetry equipments onboard spacecrafts since several years and succeeded to treat directly read data in terms of both quantitative and qualitative dosimetry characteristics and deduce from them related radiation risk.During last few years all these three types of detectors have been intensely studied to understand still better their possibilities to characterize space radiation fields. Particularly:
1.
Both PADC TED LET spectrometer and TLDs have been exposed in heavier ion beams with LET in water ranging from 1 to about 700 keV/μm with the goal to upgrade their calibration curves;
2.
A new method of MDU directly read data has been developed, permitting to measure not only dose in Si-detector, but also to estimate radiation protection quantities and the neutron contribution to the onboard exposure level;
3.
All three methods have been tested onboard spacecrafts during several missions.
Contribution presents, analyses and discusses the results obtained in items 1-3 and, also, the possibilities of these detectors to help in characterizing radiation fields during longer space missions, above 1 year.  相似文献

We present a comparative study on molecular abundances in comets basedon millimetre/submillimetre observations made with the IRAM 30-m,JCMT, CSO and SEST telescopes. This study concerns a sample of 24comets (6 Jupiter-family, 3 Halley-family, 15 long-period) observedfrom 1986 to 2001 and 8 molecular species (HCN, HNC, CH3CN,CH3OH, H2CO, CO, CS, H2S). HCN was detected in all comets,while at least 2 molecules were detected in 19 comets. From the sub-sample of comets for which contemporary H2O productionrates are available, we infer that the HCN abundance relative to water variesfrom 0.08% to 0.25%. With respect to other species, HCN is the moleculewhich exhibits the lowest abundance variation from comet to comet. Therefore,production rates relative to that of HCN can be used for a comparative study ofmolecular abundances in the 19 comets. It is found that: CH3OH/HCN varies from ≤ 9 to 64; CO/HCN varies from ≤ 24 to 180; H2CO/HCN varies between 1.6 and 10; and H2S/HCN varies between 1.5 and 7.6. This study does not show any clear correlation between the relative abundancesand the dynamical origins of the comets, or their dust-to-gas ratios.  相似文献

Detections and upper limits to the continuum emission (1 ≤ λ ≤6 cm) and spectral line emission (OH, CO, CS, HCN, HCO+, CN, CH3CN, CH3C2H, NH3, H2O, HC3N, CH3CH2CN) are reported from radio observations of Comets 1983d and 1983e. Comparison is made with observations of CN at optical wavelengths. These results may be useful in planning future cometary observations.  相似文献

We investigated the parent volatile composition of the Oort cloud Comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) on 23-25 November 2001, using the Near Infrared Echelle Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. Flux-calibrated spectra, absolute production rates, and mixing ratios are presented for H2O, HCN, CH4, C2H2, C2H6, H2CO, CH3OH and CO. Compared with “organics-normal” comets, WM1 is moderately depleted in HCN, CH4 and CH3OH, and is even more depleted in C2H2 and CO. Its composition is thus intermediate to comets that are severely depleted in their organic volatile composition and those that exhibit “normal” organic volatile abundances. We argue that WM1 may have formed closer to the young Sun than “organics-normal” comets, but at greater distance than the severely depleted comets, before its ejection to the Oort cloud. The mixing ratios of the above-listed organic volatiles agree day-by-day for 23-25 November 2001. Thus, there is no evidence of macroscopic heterogeneity in chemistry of this comet’s nucleus at the achieved measurement accuracy. As the first comet to show moderate organic depletion in parent volatiles, WM1 represents an important addition to the emerging taxonomic classification based on chemical composition.  相似文献

We present an analysis of OH, CN, and C2 jets observed in Comet Hale-Bopp during April 22-26, 1997. We conclude that an extended source, which peaks in productivity after a certain amount of time has passed after being released from the nucleus (8.5, 2.5, and 42.6×104 s, respectively) is responsible for the observed coma jet morphology in all three species. Sub-micron organic grains are the favored explanation for the extended source. Our models indicate that this extended source produces approximately 40% of the OH, 50% of the C2, and 75% of the CN. The balance for each species is created by a diffuse nuclear gas source. Compared with the nuclear gas source and normalized to the CN abundance, the composition of the extended source is depleted in OH by a factor of ∼6, and depleted in C2 by a factor of ∼2. The existence of anti-sunward jets do not require production of radicals throughout the cometary night. Instead, our model demonstrates that active areas exposed to near-twilight conditions throughout the comet's rotational period can produce the observed anti-sunward morphology.  相似文献
