Using formula to describe the average spectrum of the extragalactic far infrared background (FIRB) radiation measured by the COBE FIRAS instrument in the 0.15–2.4 THz frequency interval at mean temperature T=18.5 K, the radiative and thermodynamic properties, such as the total emissivity, total radiation power per unit area, total energy density, number density of photons, Helmholtz free energy density, entropy density, heat capacity at constant volume, and pressure are calculated. The value for the total intensity received in the 0.15–2.4 THz frequency interval is equal to 13.6 nW?m?2?sr?1. This value is about 19.4 % of the total intensity expected from the energy released by stellar nucleosynthesis over cosmic history. The radiative and thermodynamic functions of the extragalactic far infrared background (FIRB) radiation are calculated at redshift z=1.5.  相似文献

The Space Environment Viability of Organics (SEVO) experiment is one of two scientific payloads aboard the triple-cube satellite Organism/ORganic Exposure to Orbital Stresses (O/OREOS). O/OREOS is the first technology demonstration mission of the NASA Astrobiology Small Payloads Program. The 1-kg, 1000-cm3 SEVO cube is investigating the chemical evolution of organic materials in interstellar space and planetary environments by exposing organic molecules under controlled conditions directly to the low-Earth orbit (LEO) particle and electromagnetic radiation environment. O/OREOS was launched on November 19, 2010 into a 650-km, 72°-inclination orbit and has a nominal operational lifetime of six months. Four classes of organic compounds, namely an amino acid, a quinone, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and a metallo-porphyrin are being studied. Initial reaction conditions were established by hermetically sealing the thin-film organic samples in self-contained micro-environments. Chemical changes in the samples caused by direct exposure to LEO radiation and by interactions with the irradiated microenvironments are monitored in situ by ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared (UV/VIS/NIR) absorption spectroscopy using a novel compact fixed-grating CCD spectrometer with the Sun as its light source. The goals of the O/OREOS mission include: (1) demonstrating key small satellite technologies that can enable future low-cost astrobiology experiments, (2) deploying a miniature UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer suitable for in-situ astrobiology and other scientific investigations, (3) testing the capability to establish a variety of experimental reaction conditions to enable the study of astrobiological processes on small satellites, and (4) measuring the chemical evolution of organic molecules in LEO under conditions that can be extrapolated to interstellar and planetary environments. In this paper, the science and technology development of the SEVO instrument payload and its measurements are described.  相似文献

Background modelling for LEO satellites with high orbital inclination is not an easy task. The diffuse background component is dominated by the background coming from strong interactions with Earth magnetosphere trapped particles. Magnetic shielding is variable along the orbits and crosses through the SAA induce high radioactivity decay counting ratios. The aim of this paper is to present a model for the background total counting ratio of the 17 operative CdZnTe detectors on LEGRI in the short time scales and for observing periods outside crosses through SAA having enough time to cool LEGRI after the last SAA transit. Fluxes measured have been modelled in terms of the McIlwain parameter L using polynomial fits and exponential laws in terms of the geomagnetic cut-off rigidity used on COMPTEL background modelling. A discussion of the results is also included.  相似文献

The low energy (1–20 keV) detector registering particles onboard the polar-orbiting low altitude (~ 850 km) DMSP-F2 and -F3 satellites also records high energy electrons penetrating the detector walls. Thus we can study the dynamics of this electron population at L = 3.5, during isolated periods of magnetospheric substorms identified by the indices of auroral electrojet (AE), geomagnetic (Kp) and ring current (Dst). Temporal changes in the electron flux during the substorms are observed to be an additional contribution riding over the top of the pre-storm (or geomagnetically quiet-time) electron population ; the duration of the interval of intensity variation is observed to be about the same as that of the enhancement of the AE index. This indicates the temporal response of the outer radiation belt to the substorm activity, since the observation was made in the “horns” of the outer radiation belt. The observed enhanced radiation at low altitude may associate with the instantaneous increase and/or dumping of the outer radiation belt energetic electrons during each isolated substorm activity.  相似文献

The ‘Mars Energetic Radiation Environment Models’ (dMEREM and eMEREM) recently developed for the European Space Agency are herein used to estimate, for the first time, background Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) radiation and flare related solar energetic particle (SEP) events at three candidate martian landing sites under conditions where particle arrival occurred at solar minimum (December, 2006) and solar maximum (April, 2002) during Solar Cycle 23. The three landing sites were selected on the basis that they are characterized by significantly different hydrological conditions and soil compositions. Energetic particle data sets recorded on orbit at Mars at the relevant times were incomplete because of gaps in the measurements due to operational constraints. Thus, in the present study, comprehensive near-Earth particle measurements made aboard the GOES spacecraft were used as proxies to estimate the overall particle doses at each perspective landing site, assuming in each case that the fluxes fell off as 1/r2 (where r is the helio-radial distance) and that good magnetic connectivity always prevailed. The results indicate that the particle radiation environment on Mars can vary according to the epoch concerned and the landing site selected. Particle estimations obtained using MEREM are in reasonable agreement, given the inherent differences between the models, with the related NASA Heavy Ion–Nucleon Transport Code for Space Radiation/HZETRN. Both sets of results indicated that, for short (30 days) stays, the atmosphere of Mars, in the cases of the SEPs studied and the then prevailing background galactic cosmic radiation, provided sufficient shielding at the planetary surface to maintain annual skin and blood forming organ/BFO dose levels below currently accepted ionizing radiation exposure limits. The threat of occurrence of a hard spectrum SEP during Cruise-Phase transfers to/from Mars over 400 days, combined with the associated cumulative effect of prolonged GCR exposure, poses an as yet unsolved hazard to prospective onboard personnel.  相似文献

Analysis of observed spectrograms is based on comparison with synthetic spectra. The O2(b1Σ+g?X3Σ?g Atm. (1,1) band in high latitude auroras observed from the ground is found to be the strongest in the Δv = 0 sequence. It is enhanced with altitude relative to the N2 1P(2, 0)and N+2 M(2,0) bands, but the O2 Atm. (2, 2) band has an unexpected low intensity. The range of rotational temperatures of the O2 Atm. bands varies from approx. 200 to above 500 K which indicates that the altitude of the centroid of the emission region varies from about 100 km to the F-region. The highest temperature is found in the midday aurora associated with the magnetospheric cusp. Conspicuous relative variations between the intensities of N2 and O2 spectra are documented, but a satisfactory explanation of the variety is not given. Deviations of the observed O2 Atm. band intensities from the vibrational intensity distribution predicted by Franck-Condor factors indicate that the excitation of the O2 Atm. bands in aurora is not mainly due to particle impact on O2, and the contribution due to energy transfer from hot O(1D) atoms has to be found in future research.  相似文献

Night airglow of oxygen 130.4 and 135.6 nm emissions was measured by a spectrophotometer aborad an S520 sounding rocket, launched at 19:50 JST (10:50 UT) on 14 February, 1982 from Kagoshima, Japan. The altitude variation of the emissions was obtained from 110 to 266 km at zenith angles of 35.5°±4°. The emission intensity around 260 km was about 160R and is roughly compatible with model calculations taking account of O++e radiative recombination as well as O+–O mutual neutralization. Some excess of about 50R, compared to the model calculation, was observed around 200 km. Possible explanations of the excess are: (i) remnant oxygen ions during the transition period from day to night and (ii) diffuse radiation from the background sky. Model calculations taking account of remnant oxygen ions were also performed by adding an excess electron density to the original density profile. However, it was found that an unreasonably large electron density is required around 200 km (5×105 cm–3) to produce the observed intensity. It is also probable that some contribution from the background sky is present in the observed intensity.  相似文献

We present calculations which should be of interest in connection with the problem of radiative transport through the magnetospheres of pulsars and the envelopes of quasars, where not only are particle speeds of the order of the speed of light expected, but also variations of refractive index with frequency and position. The calculations show that by shining monochromatic light normally onto an interface between two media of different refractive indices it is relatively easy for the transmitted radiation to be spread out in frequency and of higher total intensity than the incident radiation. In asserting this we are assuming that the boundary between the two media is moving non-uniformly in time. The two idealized examples which have been worked through to illustrate this parametric conversion and amplification mechanism are:
  1. monochromatic light passing normally through a slab of material which is bounded by two fixed transparent plates and which is accelerating parallel to the plates. The intensity of the transmitted light exceeds the intensity of the incident light by a factorO(γ) where γ is the usual Lorentz factor.
  2. monochromatic light, of frequency ω, passing normally through a plane interface between vacuum and a medium of constant refractive index,n 1, where the interface is oscillating around some fixed equilibrium position with a maximum speedO(c). In this case the transmitted intensity exceeds that which would be transmitted through an identical interface at rest by a factor 1+(γmax?1)(n 1?1)2. For fixed refractive index and large γ this factor can be considerably in excess of unity. The frequency distribution of the transmitted radiation varies as ω?2/3 for frequencies in the range ????γ3?.
Altogether, the calculations reported in this paper indicate that the production of broad-band, high-intensity radiation from relatively weak monochromatic light is a process which is likely to occur in most astrophysical objects where it is believed, or suspected, that rapid motions and spatial variations occur.  相似文献

We provide our estimates of the intensity of the gamma-ray emission with an energy near 0.1 TeV generated in intergalactic space in the interactions of cosmic rays with background emissions. We assume that the cosmic-ray sources are pointlike and that these are active galactic nuclei. The following possible types of sources are considered: remote and powerful ones, at redshifts up to z = 1.1, with a monoenergetic particle spectrum, E = 1021 eV; the same objects, but with a power-law particle spectrum; and nearby sources at redshifts 0 < z ≤ 0.0092, i.e., at distances no larger than 50 Mpc also with a power-law particle spectrum. The contribution of cosmic rays to the extragalactic diffuse gammaray background at an energy of 0.1 TeVhas been found to depend on the type of sources or, more specifically, the contribution ranges from f ? 10?4 to f ≈ 0.1, depending on the source model. We conclude that the data on the extragalactic background gamma-ray emission can be used to determine the characteristics of extragalactic cosmic-ray sources, i.e., their distances and the pattern of the particle energy spectrum.  相似文献

The irreversible changes of the intensity of trapped protons with energy above 1 MeV in the Earth's magnetosphere near the outer boundary of trapping are observed after moderate geomagnetic storms on the low-altitude polar-orbiting satellite Intercosmos-17. These changes are interpreted in terms of nonadiabatical effects of proton motion in the disturbed geomagnetic field (assuming Dst variation) which affects the conditions for stable trapping of protons during the storm. The decrease of proton intensity is due to an adiabatic decrease of energy, an increase of mirror-point altitude and nonadiabatic scattering and losses. The interaction of two types of particle motion—gyrorotation and the ‘bounce’ motion, which leads to the instability of motion, is assumed. The importance of nonadiabatical losses of trapped protons with low equatorial pitch angles for changes near the proton boundary is pointed out.  相似文献

The dayside hydrogen exosphere was observed in October–November 1975 with a Lymanalpha photometer carried on board Venera-9 and 10. In addition to intensity measurements, the use of a hydrogen cell allowed for the first time linewidth measurements. Both intensity and linewidth measurements below 1500 km of altitude are well fitted by a single exospheric component (Tc = 500 ± 100 K, nc = 1.5 × 104 atom cm?3at 250 km). Above 3000 km, the measured linewidth increased sharply, to decrease again above 4500 km. This feature is interpreted as the signature of an additional population of “hot” atoms circulating on satellite orbits, created just behind the bow-shock by charge-exchange collisions (with an efficiency of 4%) between the neutral atoms and the solar wind protons, which became turbulent after bow-shock crossing. The density ratio of “hot” to standard population is of the order of 10% around 3500 km of altitude.  相似文献

Constraints of the laboratory physics on the model of the universe are considered. The constraints are derived from the measurement procedure for the flux of electromagnetic radiation and valid for any model of the universe. In classical physics, an observer in the frame of the detector can measure the transformation (1+z)?1 for the energy flux of the electromagnetic wave emitted in the frame of the source but cannot any transformation for space and time between the frames of the source and detector. In quantum mechanics, the energy of the electromagnetic radiation as a function of the distance may be measured as a redshifted frequency of photon (1+z) or as a decrease of the intensity of radiation (1+z).  相似文献

Data processing and interpretation of the nephelometer measurements made in the Venus atmosphere aboard the Venera 9, 10 and 11 landers in the sunlit hemisphere near the equator are discussed. These results were used to obtain the aerosol distribution and its microphysical properties from 62 km to the surface. The main aerosol content is found in the altitude range between 62 km (where measurements began) and 48 km, the location of the cloud region. Three prominent layers labeled as I (between 62 and 57 km), II (between 57 and 51 km) and III (between 51 and 48 km), each with different particle characteristics are discovered within the clouds. The measured light-scattering patterns can be intrepreted as having been produced by particles with effective radii from 1 to 2 μm depending on height and indices of refractivity from 1.45 in layer I to 1.42 in layer III. These values do not contradict the idea that the droplets are made of sulfuric acid. In layers II and III the particle size distribution is at least bimodal rather than uni-modal. The index of refraction is found to decrease to 1.33 in the lower part of layer II, suggesting a predominant abundance of larger particles of different chemical origin, and chlorine compounds are assumed to be relevant to this effect. In the entire heightrange of the Venera 9–11 craft descents, the clouds are rather rarefied and are characterized by a mean volume scattering coefficient σ ~ 2 × 10?5 cm?1 that corresponds to the mean meteorological range of visibility of about 2 km. The average mass content of condensate is estimated to be equal to 4 × 10?9 g/cm3, and the total optical depth of clouds to τ ~ 35. Near the bottom of layer III clouds are strongly variable. In the subcloud atmosphere a haze was observed between 48 and 32 km; that haze is mainly made of submicron particles, reff ~ 0.1μm. The atmosphere below that is totally transparent but separate (sometimes possibly disappearing) layers may be present up to a height of 8 km above the surface. A model of this region with a very low particle density (N ? 2–3 cm?3) strongly refractive large particles (reff ? 2.5 μm; 1.7 < n < 2.0) provided satisfactory agreement. The optical depth of aerosol in the atmosphere below the subcloud haze does not exceed 2.5.  相似文献

An altitude profile of the λ3914 emission of Na2+ measured in an aurora by two rocket-borne spectrometers has been used to compute height-intensity profiles of the OI radiations at λ1304 and λ1356. Comparison of predictions with observations shows that the shape of the altitude profiles can better be reproduced by assuming a Doppler frequency profile rather than a Voigt profile in the radiative transfer computations. There are serious discrepancies between the observed and predicted intensity maxima for both oxygen features that could be due to the particular value for the cross sections we have adopted for excitation of oxygen by electron impact. We have also carried out calculations for two model aurorae characterized by widely differing primary electron spectra, and find that simultaneous zenith-nadir measurements would not only be useful for specifying the nature of the precipitating electron flux, but also for further testing important assumptions made in the radiative transfer calculations.  相似文献

The particle size distribution in the coma and tail of Comet Bennett has been determined by several methods, each sensitive to a particular size range. It is confirmed that a minimum value of the particle density (?), size (d), and radiation pressure efficiency (Qrp) function (?d/Qrp) exists at about 3–10 sx 10?5g cm?2. The existence of such a cutoff is probably due to the decreasing radiation pressure efficiency for particles smaller than the wavelength of the light being scattered. An exact determination of this cutoff may allow identification of the particle type.  相似文献

The Fabry-Perot interferometer on Dynamics Explorer 2 was used as a low sensitivity photometer to study the O2 Atmospheric A band during the daytime. A study of the brightness of the emission showed that the assumed source of O2(b1Σg+) in the thermosphere, O(1D), can account for the observed intensity up to about 250 km but with a significantly different scale height. This combined with an enhanced brightness above this altitude suggests an additional source for this emission.  相似文献

Within the framework of quantum mechanics in a curved space-time the transitions between energy levels of a charged particle (elementary particle, atomic nucleus) being in a Schwarzschild field are considered. The DeWitt conservative self-force acting on the charge is taken into account. Energy and intensity of the electric dipole radiation are calculated for charged particles in the field of miniholes with masses ranging from 1014 to 10−5 g.  相似文献

We have constructed a model of the physical processes controlling Titan's clouds. Our model produces clouds that qualitatively match the present observational constraints in a wide variety of model atmospheres, including those with low atmospheric pressures (25 mbar) and high atmospheric pressures. We find the following: (1) high atmospheric temperatures (160°K) are important so that there is a large scale height in the first few optical depths of cloud; (2) the aerosol mass production occurs at very low aerosol optical depth so that the cloud particles do not directly affect the photochemistry producing them; (3) the production rate of aerosol mass by chemical processes is probably greater than 3.5 × 10?14 g cm?2 sec?1; (4) and the eddy diffusion coefficient is less than 5 × 106 cm2 sec?1 except perhaps in the top optical depth of the cloud. Our model is not extremely sensitive to particle shape, but it is sensitive to particle density. Higher particle densities require larger aerosol mass production rates to produce satisfactory clouds. Particle densities of unity require a mass production rate on the order of 3.5 × 10?13 g cm?2 sec?1. We also show that an increase in mass input causes a decrease in the mean particle size, as required by J. B. Pollack et al. (1980, Geophys. Res. Lett. 7, 829–832), to explain the observed correlation between the solar cycle and Titan's albedo; that coagulation need not be extremely inefficient in order to obtain realistic clouds as proposed by M. Podolak and E. Podolak (1980, Icarus43, 73–83); that coagulation could be inefficient due to photoelectric charging of the particles; and, that the lifetime of particles near the altitude of unit optical depth is a few months, as required to explain the temporal variability observed by S. T. Suess and G. W. Lockwood and D. P. Cruikshank and J. S. Morgan (1979, Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.11, 564). Although Titan's aerosols are ottically thick in the vertical direction, the atmosphere is so extended that the horizontal visibility is greater than that found anywhere at Earth's surface.  相似文献

Based on the results from three balloon flights, made at Hyderabad(7.6°N geomagnetic latitude) using omnidirectional gamma ray spectrometers, the different aspects of the low energy atmospheric gamma rays at equatorial latitudes in the energy interval 100 keV to 1 MeV are investigated and detailed discussion is presented. The energy loss spectrum in this energy range is found to consist of a continuum superimposed on which is a photopeak due to 0.51 MeV line arising from electron positron annihilation. The continuous background spectrum is similar to that observed at mid and high latitudes. The intensity of 0.51 MeV line is estimated to be 0.079 ± 0.01 photons cm−2 sec−1 at 6 g cm−2 over Hyderabad and the altitude dependence of its intensity is established for this low latitude station. The latitude effect of the intensity of this line at 6 g cm−2 is derived for the first time by comparing the results of the present measurements with those available for mid and high latitudes. The contribution of the cosmic gamma rays to the observed count rates at 6 g cm−2 is shown to be negligible in the case of the omnidirectional spectrometers of the type used in the present observations even for low latitude stations.  相似文献

The detection and identification of carbonates on Mars are of prime importance to establish the evolution of its atmosphere, correlated to the history of the liquid water, or even to determine the existence of a possible ancient biological activity. Till date, no large deposits of carbonates have been found. In fact, their detection is specific to local areas and in very low amounts. The absence of such deposits is commonly attributed to the harsh environmental conditions at the surface of Mars. Additionally, the presence of UV radiation has been proposed to explain their photodecomposition and hence their absence. However, contradictory results from laboratory experiments mimicking Mars’ surface UV radiation did not resolve the behaviour of carbonates in such an environment, which is why we exposed, in low Earth orbit and in laboratory experiments, both abiotic and biotic calcium carbonates to UV radiation of wavelength above 200 nm, the same spectral distribution as the one reaching the surface of Mars. For low Earth orbit (LEO) exposure, this was done for the UVolution experiment on board the BIOPAN ESA module, which was set outside a Russian Foton automated capsule, and exposed to space conditions for 12 days in September 2007. The targeted carbonates are biominerals and abiotic samples. Our laboratory results mainly show that the exposed carbonates appear to be stable to UV radiation if directly exposed to it. The LEO experiment results tend to the same conclusion, but the integrated exposition time to Solar UV during the experiment is not sufficient to be conclusive. However, the stability of the biominerals derived from the laboratory experiment could strengthen the interest to explore deeper their potential as life records at Mars. Hence, they should be considered as primary targets for in situ analyses during future missions.  相似文献
