We have performed a detailed systematic search for multiperiodicity in the Population I Cepheids of the Large Magellanic Cloud. In this process, we have identified for the first time several new types of Cepheid pulsational behaviour. We have found two triple-mode Cepheids pulsating simultaneously in the first three radial overtones. In 9 per cent of the first overtone (FO) Cepheids, we have detected weak but well-resolved secondary periodicities. They appear either very close to the primary pulsation frequency or at a much higher frequency with a characteristic period ratio of 0.60–0.64. In either case, the secondary periodicities must correspond to non-radial modes of oscillation. This result presents a major challenge to the theory of stellar pulsations, which predicts that such modes should not be excited in Cepheid variables. Non-radial modes have also been found in three of the fundamental first overtone (FU/FO) double-mode Cepheids, but no such oscillations have been detected in single-mode Cepheids pulsating in the FU mode.
In 19 per cent of double-mode Cepheids pulsating in the first two radial overtones (FO/SO type), we have detected a Blazhko-type periodic modulation of amplitudes and phases. Both modes are modulated with a common period, which is always longer than 700 d. Variations of the two amplitudes are anticorrelated, and maximum of one amplitude always coincides with minimum of the other. We have compared observations of modulated FO/SO Cepheids with predictions of theoretical models of the Blazhko effect, showing that the currently most popular models cannot account for properties of these stars. We propose that the Blazhko effect in FO/SO Cepheids can be explained by a non-stationary resonant interaction of one of the radial modes with another, perhaps non-radial, mode of oscillations.  相似文献

The POMME survey (Pixel Observations of M31 with MEgacam) monitored two fields in the disc of M31 using MegaCam at CFHT over a timespan of 2.5 months in three filters (g′,r′,i′). Covering a large fraction of the disc of M31, it yields an unprecedented view on Cepheids, eclipsing binaries and microlensing events in M31. In this contribution we present the first results on the Cepheid populations in M31. Using difference imaging we detect more than 2500 Cepheids in the period range from 2 to 80 days, making the catalogue the largest and most homogeneous database of M31 Cepheids to date. The period distribution peaks at logP[day]≈0.63. We confirm the presence of a second peak in the period distribution at logP[day]≈1.13, consistent with previous findings on smaller samples, and which is also present in Galactic Cepheids, unlike those at the lower metallicities of the LMC. Using the Fourier parameters derived from light curve fitting we identify 200 first overtone pulsators among the POMME Cepheids. On-going work will include the derivation of period-luminosity relations and the extension of the analysis to eclipsing binary systems, yielding an improved distance to M31 and tighter constraints on systematics affecting the period-colour-metallicity-luminosity relations.  相似文献

Phenomena of bifurcation in hydrodynamic stellar models of radial pulsation are reviewed. By changing control parameters of models, we can see qualitatively different pulsation behaviors in hydrodynamic models with transitions due to various types of bifurcation. In weakly dissipative models (classical Cepheids), the bifurcation is induced by modal resonances. Two types of the modal resonances found in models are discussed: The higherharmonic resonances of the second overtone mode in the fundamental mode pulsator and of the fourth overtone mode in the first overtone pulsator are relevant to observations. The subharmonic resonance between the fundamental and first overtone modes is confirmed in classical Cepheid models. In strongly dissipative models (less-massive supergiant stars), the bifurcation of nonlinear pulsation is induced by the hydrodynamics of ionization zones as well as modal resonances. The sequence of the bifurcation sometimes leads to chaotic behaviors in nonlinear pulsation. The transition routes from regular to the chaotic pulsations found in models are discussed with respect to the theory of chaos in simple dynamical systems: The cascade of period-doubling bifurcation is confirmed to cause chaotic pulsation in W Virginis models. For models of higher luminosity, the tangent bifurcation is found to lead intermittent chaos. Finally, hydrodynamic models for chaotic pulsation with small amplitudes observed in the post-AGB stars are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The radiii of 17 classical Cepheids are determined. The linear surface brightness-colour relationS v=b(B–V)o+const is accepted. The present method permits the determination of the coefficientb for each star separately and the obtaining of the absolute magnitude of Cepheids. The coefficientb shows a slight dependence on the periodP of stars. The period-luminosity relation is approximately the same as the one obtained by van den Bergh (1976) for Cepheids in open clusters. The simultaneous radial velocity and photoelectric observation may show the phase shifts between motions of the continuum layer and of the level where the Fe I line is formed. The Cepheidl Car is outside the instability strip, and probably has a red companion as was suggested by Schmidt (1980a). Conclusions about the existence of overtone pulsators cannot probably be drawn only from the scattering in the period-radius relation.  相似文献

We simulated two models of classical Cepheids with the same effective temperature and luminosity but different masses. Neither model has significant resonance among linear nonadiabatic periods of the fundamental, the first overtone, and the second overtone radial modes. The higher mass model found to approach to the second overtone-only state. The lower mass model shows a complicated three-mode interaction and none of the amplitudes of three modes is negligible. The relation of the higher mass model to the shortest period Cepheid HR 7308, and that of the lower mass model to the double-mode Cepheids are discussed. It appears that three-mode nonresonant coupling should be considered to explain the behaviours of both models.  相似文献

A. N. Cox recently showed that a 20% opacity decrease in the 20,000-30,000 K region as indicated by the new Livermore OPAL opacities reconciles the discrepancy between pulsation and evolution masses of double-mode RR Lyrae variables. Nonlinear hydrodynamic calculations were performed for RR Lyrae models of mass 0.75M , 51L , andZ = 0.0001 (Osterhoff II type) including this opacity decrease. The Stellingwerf periodic relaxation method was used to converge the models to a limit cycle, and the Floquet matrix eigenvalues calculated to search for a tendency of the fundamental mode to grow from the full-amplitude overtone solution, and the overtone mode to grow from the full-amplitude fundamental solution, thereby predicting double-mode behavior. Models ofT eff < 7000 K with the opacity decrease have positive fundamental-mode growth rates in the overtone solution, in contrast to earlier results by Hodson and Cox (1982), and models withT eff > 7000 have positive 1st overtone growth rates in the fundamental-mode solution, but double-mode behavior was not found.  相似文献

We present a new set of Cepheid, full amplitude, non-linear, convective models which are pulsationally unstable in the second overtone (SO). Hydrodynamical models were constructed by adopting a chemical composition typical of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and for stellar masses ranging from 3.25 to 4 M. Predicted φ 21 Fourier parameters agree, within current uncertainties, with empirical data for pure first- and second-overtone variables as well as for first-/second-overtone (FO/SO) double-mode Cepheids collected by Udalski et al. in the SMC. On the other hand, predicted I -band amplitudes are systematically larger than the observed ones in the short-period range, but attain values that are closer to the empirical ones for log  P SO≥−0.12 and log  P FO≥0.1 . We also find, in agreement with empirical evidence, that the region within which both second and first overtones attain a stable limit cycle widens when moving towards lower luminosities. Moreover, predicted P SO/ P FO and P FO/ P F period ratios agree quite well with empirical period ratios for FO/SO and fundamental/FO double-mode SMC Cepheids.
Interestingly enough, current models support the evidence that pure SO Cepheids and SO components in FO/SO Cepheids are good distance indicators. In fact, we find that the fit of the predicted period–luminosity–colour ( V , V – I ) relation to empirical SMC data supplies a distance modulus ( DM ) of 19.11±0.08 mag . The same outcome applies to pure FO Cepheids and FO components in FO/SO Cepheids, and indeed we find DM =19.16±0.19 mag . Current distance estimates do not account for, within current uncertainties on photometry and reddening, the so-called short distance scale.  相似文献

The photoelectricV observations of the Scuti star 59 Aur have been analysed using the techniques of periodogram analysis and least-squares solutions. The fundamental mode is found to be more prominent than the first overtone in the pulsation of 59 Aur. The period ratio of the first overtone to the fundamental (i.e.,P 1/P 0=0.748) indicates that the star pulsates in the radial mode. The absolute magnitude, effective temperature and mass of the star are derived to be 1 . m 22, 7300 K and 2.0M , respectively. No variations exceeding±0 . m 01 about the mean values ofB-V andU-B colours have been found during a pulsation cycle.  相似文献

Based on our radial-velocity measurements and on published photometric observations, we calculated the radii of 64 classical Cepheids that were previously assumed to be fundamental-mode pulsators. Our detailed analysis of the period-radius diagram shows that the sample of Cepheids with pulsation periods shorter than 9 days probably contains a significant fraction (up to 30%) of stars pulsating in the first overtone. This fact leads to incorrect luminosity estimates for Cepheids and may be partly responsible for the discrepancy between the short and long distance scales.  相似文献

V440 Per is a Population I Cepheid with a period of 7.57 d and low-amplitude, almost sinusoidal light and radial velocity curves. With no reliable data on the first harmonic, its pulsation mode identification remained controversial. We obtained a radial velocity curve of V440 Per with our new high-precision and high-throughput Poznań Spectroscopic Telescope. Our data reach an accuracy of 130 m s−1 per individual measurement and yield a secure detection of the first harmonic with an amplitude of   A 2= 140 ± 15 m s−1  . The velocity Fourier phase φ21 of V440 Per is inconsistent at the 7.25σ level with those of fundamental-mode Cepheids, implying that the star must be an overtone Cepheid, as originally proposed by Kienzle et al. Thus, V440 Per becomes the longest-period Cepheid with securely established overtone pulsations. We show that a convective non-linear pulsation hydrocode can reproduce the Fourier parameters of V440 Per very well. The requirement to match the observed properties of V440 Per constrains the free parameters of the dynamical convection model used in the pulsation calculations, in particular the radiative loss parameter.  相似文献

The cosmological distance ladder crucially depends on classical Cepheids (with P=3–80 days), which are primary distance indicators up to 33 Mpc. Within this volume, very few SNe Ia have been calibrated through classical Cepheids, with uncertainty related to the non-linearity and the metallicity dependence of their period–luminosity (PL) relation. Although a general consensus on these effects is still not achieved, classical Cepheids remain the most used primary distance indicators. A possible extension of these standard candles to further distances would be important. In this context, a very promising new tool is represented by the ultra-long period (ULP) Cepheids (P≳80 days), recently identified in star-forming galaxies. Only a small number of ULP Cepheids have been discovered so far. Here we present and analyse the properties of an updated sample of 37 ULP Cepheids observed in galaxies within a very large metallicity range of 12+log(O/H) from ∼7.2 to 9.2 dex. We find that their location in the colour-magnitude (VI,V) diagram as well as their Wesenheit (VI) index-period (WP) relation suggests that they are the counterparts at high luminosity of the shorter-period (P≲80 days) classical Cepheids. However, a complete pulsation and evolutionary theoretical scenario is needed to properly interpret the true nature of these objects. We do not confirm the flattening in the studied WP relation suggested by Bird et al. (Astrophys. J. 695:874, 2009). Using the whole sample, we find that ULP Cepheids lie around a WP relation similar to that of the LMC, although with a large spread (∼ 0.4 mag).  相似文献

The rationale behind recent calibrations of the Cepheid PL relation using the Wesenheit formulation is reviewed and reanalyzed, and it is shown that recent conclusions regarding a possible change in slope of the PL relation for short-period and long-period Cepheids are tied to a pathological distribution of HST calibrators within the instability strip. A recalibration of the period-luminosity relation is obtained using Galactic Cepheids in open clusters and groups, the resulting relationship, described by log L/L =2.415(±0.035)+1.148(±0.044)log P, exhibiting only the moderate scatter expected from color spread within the instability strip. The relationship is confirmed by Cepheids with HST parallaxes, although without the need for Lutz-Kelker corrections, and in general by Cepheids with revised Hipparcos parallaxes, albeit with concerns about the cited precisions of the latter. A Wesenheit formulation of W V =−2.259(±0.083)−4.185(±0.103)log P for Galactic Cepheids is tested successfully using Cepheids in the inner regions of the galaxy NGC 4258, confirming the independent geometrical distance established for the galaxy from OH masers. Differences between the extinction properties of interstellar and extragalactic dust may yet play an important role in the further calibration of the Cepheid PL relation and its application to the extragalactic distance scale.  相似文献

The Fourier coefficients of the hydrodynamic variables are calculated for the limit-cycle models of classical Cepheids having periods from 7.2 to 10.9 days. In adiabatically pulsating layers of the stellar envelope, each Fourier harmonic of orderk 8 is shown to be identified with a corresponding standing wave, so that the pulsation motions of the adiabatic layers may be represented as a superposition of standing waves. Each Fourier harmonic of orderk may also be identified with the eigenfunction of orderl of the linear adiabatic wave equation when the resonance condition l /0 =k is fulfilled. The spectra of the oscillatory moment of inertia and the spectra of kinetic energy obey the power law for the Fourier harmonics of orderk 15, the spectrum slope being steeper for shorter pulsation periods. In the helium and hydrogen ionizing regions all of the Fourier harmonics drive the pulsation instability, whereas in the radiative damping region the mechanical work done by each Fourier harmonic is negative. In classical Cepheids having periods shorter than 10 days the period dependence of the secondary bump is due to phase changes of the second order Fourier harmonic in the outer nonadiabatic layers of the stellar envelope. At a pulsation period of II 9.7 days the second order Fourier harmonic is identified with the second overtone. At periods II > 10 days the second order Fourier harmonic tends to be attracted by the fundamental mode in such a way that their phases coincide in the outer layers of the stellar envelope.  相似文献

We review the classification of the variable star SW Equulei, formerly classified as a close binary of the W UMa type with a period of 0.83632 d and components of spectral types O–A or F–G and later. New observations indicate that the light curve is not that of an eclipsing binary but of a pulsating star with a period half of the old value. Further examination shows that SW Equulei is a double mode star of the RRd Lyrae type with a fundamental period of P = 0.560727 d and an overtone of P = 0.4181777 d at a distance of ≈ 7.1 kpc. Results concerning the dependence of photometric and radial velocity amplitudes on metallicity are presented based on about 200 Galactic classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental mode. The Galactic distribution of the [Fe/H] value of Cepheids is also studied. We show that the photometric amplitude ratio AI/AV is independent of metallicity. The observed dependence of this ratio on the pulsation period does not correspond to the theoretical predictions. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The kinematics and distribution of classical Cepheids within ∼3 kpc from the Sun suggest the existence of the outer ring R1R2 in the Galaxy. The optimum value of the solar position angle with respect to the major axis of the bar, θb, providing the best agreement between the distribution of Cepheids and model particles, is θb = 37° ±13°. The kinematical features obtained for Cepheids with negative galactocentric radial velocity VR are consistent with the solar location near the descending segment of the outer ring R2. The sharp rise of extinction toward of the Galactic center can be explained by the presence of the outer ring R1 near the Sun. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

This paper is devoted to spectroscopic studies of three bright Cepheids (BG Cru, R Cru, and T Cru) and continues the series of our works aimed at determining the atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of southern-hemisphere Cepheids. We have studied 12 high-resolution spectra taken with the 1.9-m telescope of the South African Astronomical Observatory and the 8-m VLT telescope of the European Southern Observatory in Chile. The atmospheric parameters and chemical composition have been determined for these stars. The averaged atmospheric parameters are: T eff = 6253 ± 30 K, log g = 2.15, V t = 4.30 km s?1 for BG Cru; T eff = 5812 ± 22 K, log g = 1.65, V t = 3.80 km s?1 for R Cru; and T eff = 5588 ± 21 K, log g = 1.70, V t = 4.30 km s?1 for T Cru. All these Cepheids exhibit a nearly solar metallicity ([Fe/H] = +0.04 dex for BG Cru, +0.06 dex for R Cru, and +0.08 dex for T Cru); the carbon, oxygen, sodium, magnesium, and aluminum abundances suggest that the objects have already passed the first dredge-up. The abundances of other elements are nearly solar. An anomalous behavior of the absorption lines of metals (neutral atoms and ions) in the atmosphere of the small-amplitude Cepheid BG Cru is pointed out. The main components in these lines split up into additional blue and red analogs that are smaller in depth and equivalent width and vary with pulsation phase. Such splitting of the absorption lines of metals (with the hydrogen lines being invariable) is known for the classical Cepheid X Sgr. The calculated nonlinear pulsation model of BG Cru with the parameters L = 2000 L , T eff = 6180 K, and M = 4.3M shows that this small-amplitude Cepheid pulsates in the first overtone and is close to the blue boundary of the Cepheid instability strip. According to the model, the extent of the Cepheid’s atmosphere is relatively small. Therefore, no spectroscopic manifestations of shock waves through variability are possible in this Cepheid and the observed blue and red components in metal absorption lines can be explained solely by the presence of an extended circumstellar envelope around BG Cru.  相似文献

This paper concerns the calibration of the K period–luminosity relation for Mira variables using Hipparcos parallaxes. K magnitudes are available for 255 Mira-like variables which were observed by Hipparcos . Period–luminosity zero-points are evaluated for various subgroups of data. The best solution for oxygen-rich Miras, which uses 180 stars, omitting the short-period red group (which had different kinematics from the short-period blue stars) and the low-amplitude variables, provides a zero-point of     which implies a distance modulus for the Large Magellanic Cloud of     or perhaps slightly greater if a metallicity correction is required, in good agreement with the value derived from Cepheids. The zero-point of the period–luminosity relation for carbon stars is briefly discussed.
Linear diameters are derived for red variables with measured angular diameters and parallaxes, and are used to examine the long-standing question of the pulsation mode(s) of these stars. Evidence is presented to suggest that most of them are pulsating in the same mode and, if published model atmospheres are correct, this is probably the first overtone. Some discussion is given of sequences in the period–luminosity and period–colour diagrams and their bearing on the pulsation mode problem.  相似文献

For seven faint southern Cepheids (WW Car, SX Car, UZ Car, UY Car, GX Car, HW Car, YZ Car), we have determined their atmospheric parameters and chemical composition for the first time based on ten high-resolution (R = 50 000) spectra taken with the 1.5-m Hexapod telescope at the Joint Observatory of the Northern Catholic University (Antofagasta, Chile) and the Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany). Six objects from the list demonstrate atmospheric parameters and chemical composition typical of Cepheids that have passed through the first dredge-up phase, while WW Car is probably an anomalous Cepheid. According to our preliminary estimates, it has an overabundance of CNO, a deficit of sodium and aluminum, and a slight deficit of magnesium, with iron and other elements being underabundant relative to the Sun.  相似文献

We have tested the method of determining the solar Galactocentric distance R 0 and Galactic rotation velocity V 0 modified by Sofue et al. using near-solar-circle objects. The motion of objects relative to the local standard of rest has been properly taken into account. We show that when such young objects as star-forming regions or Cepheids are analyzed, allowance for the perturbations produced by the Galactic spiral density wave improves the statistical significance of the estimates. The estimate of R 0 = 7.25 ± 0.32 kpc has been obtained from 19 star-forming regions. The following estimates have been obtained from a sample of 14 Cepheids (with pulsation periods P > 5 d ): R 0 = 7.66 ± 0.36 kpc and V 0 = 267 ± 17 km s?1. We consider the influence of the adopted Oort constant A and the character of stellar proper motions (Hipparcos or UCAC4). The following estimates have been obtained from a sample of 18 Cepheids with stellar proper motions from the UCAC4 catalog: R 0 = 7.64 ± 0.32 kpc and V 0 = 217 ± 11 km s?1.  相似文献
