A consolidated picture of oil pollution for the northern Indian Ocean is presented. Oil slicks were sighted on 5582 observations, about 83.5% of the total observations of 6689. The range of concentrations, of the floating tar balls, is 0–6.0 mg/m2 in the Arabian Sea. Similarly, the oil tanker route in the Bay of Bengal has the range of 0–69.75 mg/m2. North of this route, the Bay of Bengal is comparatively free from this floating tar. Mean concentrations of dissolved and dispersed hydrocarbons for 0–20 m are 32.5 and 24.1 μg kg?1, respectively, in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.  相似文献

Surface pelagic tar concentrations in the equatorial South Atlantic Ocean were low (< 0.001 to 14.6 mg m?2). With one exception, concentrations were less than 0.5 mg m?2. The tars were characterized by gravimetry, carbon isotopic composition, molecular compositions (gas chromatographically), sulphur content, total fluorescence spectra, and biological marker fingerprints. Most tars exhibited significant amounts of degradation. A total fluorescence technique was used to group the tars into two basic types. One type occurred at low concentrations and appeared to be due to chronic long-term oil pollution in the South Atlantic Ocean. The second group occurred at much higher concentrations and was associated with more coastal-influenced waters. Biological marker (triterpanes and steranes) fingerprints confirmed the fluorescence groupings. Carbon isotopic composition and pristane/phytane ratios exhibited few geographical trends.  相似文献

Analysis of hexane-extractable hydrocarbons in zooplankton collected off Bermuda in August 1979, and their faecal pellets, gave an estimated removal rate of hydrocarbons from surface waters by ‘grazing’ of 16–46 μg m?2 for a 4 h period. With a number of assumptions, this can be translated to 8–23 mg m?2 yr?1. When compared to the annual input due to petroleum discharge in the currents feeding the Sargasso Sea (18–70 mg m?2 yr?1 hexane-extractable hydrocarbons), this result implies that zooplankton are an important factor in the short-term removal of petroleum residues from open ocean surface waters.  相似文献

The 20th May 2006 lava dome collapse of the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, had a total non-dense rock equivalent (non-DRE) collapse volume of approximately 115?×?106?m3. The majority of this volume was deposited into the ocean. The collapse was rapid, 85% of the mobilized volume being removed in just 35?min, giving peak pyroclastic flow flux of 66?×?103?m3?s?1. Channel and levee facies on the submarine flanks of the volcano and formation of a thick, steep-sided ridge, suggest that the largest and most dense blocks were transported proximally as a high concentration granular flow. Of the submerged volume, 30% was deposited from the base of this granular flow, forming a linear, high-relief ridge that extends 7?km from shore. The remaining 70% of the submerged volume comprises the finer grain sizes, which were transported at least 40?km by turbidity currents on gradients of <2°. At several localities, the May 2006 distal turbidity currents ran up 200?m of topography and eroded up to 20?cm of underlying substrate. Multiple turbidites are preserved, representing current reflection from the graben margins and deflection around topography. The high energy of the May 2006 collapse resulted in longer submarine run out than the larger (210?×?106?m3) Soufrière Hills dome collapse in July 2003.  相似文献

A series of Mb 3.8–5.5 induced seismic events in the midcontinent region, United States, resulted from injection of fluid either into a basal sedimentary reservoir with no underlying confining unit or directly into the underlying crystalline basement complex. The earthquakes probably occurred along faults that were likely critically stressed within the crystalline basement. These faults were located at a considerable distance (up to 10 km) from the injection wells and head increases at the hypocenters were likely relatively small (~70–150 m). We present a suite of simulations that use a simple hydrogeologic‐geomechanical model to assess what hydrogeologic conditions promote or deter induced seismic events within the crystalline basement across the midcontinent. The presence of a confining unit beneath the injection reservoir horizon had the single largest effect in preventing induced seismicity within the underlying crystalline basement. For a crystalline basement having a permeability of 2 × 10?17 m2 and specific storage coefficient of 10?7/m, injection at a rate of 5455 m3/d into the basal aquifer with no underlying basal seal over 10 years resulted in probable brittle failure to depths of about 0.6 km below the injection reservoir. Including a permeable (kz = 10?13 m2) Precambrian normal fault, located 20 m from the injection well, increased the depth of the failure region below the reservoir to 3 km. For a large permeability contrast between a Precambrian thrust fault (10?12 m2) and the surrounding crystalline basement (10?18 m2), the failure region can extend laterally 10 km away from the injection well.  相似文献

We investigated greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, CH4, and N2O) from reservoirs located across an altitude gradient in Switzerland. These are the first results of greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs at high elevations in the Alps. Depth profiles were taken in 11 reservoirs located at different altitudes between the years 2003 and 2006. Diffusive trace gas emissions were calculated using surface gas concentrations, wind speeds and transfer velocities. Additionally, methane entering with the inflowing water and methane loss at the turbine was assessed for a subset of the reservoirs. All reservoirs were emitters of carbon dioxide and methane with an average of 970?±?340?mg?m?2?day?1 (results only from four lowland and one subalpine reservoir) and 0.20?±?0.15?mg?m?2?day?1, respectively. One reservoir (Lake Wohlen) emitted methane at a much higher rate (1.8?±?0.9?mg?m?2?day?1) than the other investigated reservoirs. There was no significant difference in methane emissions across the altitude gradient, but average dissolved methane concentrations decreased with increasing elevation. Only lowland reservoirs were sources for N2O (72?±?22???g?m?2?day?1), while the subalpine and alpine reservoirs were in equilibrium with atmospheric concentrations. These results indicate reservoirs from subalpine/alpine regions to be only minor contributors of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere compared to other reservoirs.  相似文献

The lake without any outlet (11 ha, 55000 m3, zmax 2,25 m) has a weak thermal stratification with maximum surface temperatures of 32.5 °C. The annual variation of temperature and depth of visibility is unimodal, with the maxima or minima in August. Phytoplankton consists mainly of Cyanophyceae. The primary production determined by the light-dark bottle technique (oxygen method) varies in the annual variation between 0.3… 0.5 g m?2 d?1 C (winter) and 3.4… 4.6 g m?2 d?1 C (summer); as the annual means of 1975 and 1976 there were found 1.9 and 2.4 g m?2 d?1 C, resp., gross production at a utilization of 0.42… 2.85% of the radiation energy. The chemism is a well-buffered hydrogen-carbonate water (pH 8.1… 9.0) with 74… 90 mg/1 Na and 20.5… 31.5 mg/1 K and with a good nutrient supply (20… 40 μg/1 PO4—P and 100… 240 μg/1 NO3—N) at the same time.  相似文献

Quantitative beach sampling conducted after the S. W. monsoon season yielded average standing stocks of tar ranging from 5 to 2325 g m?1 of shoreline with overall average of 224 g m?1. Values are among the highest reported for any world area and show a trend of increasing levels of oil residues close to the Strait of Hormuz. Data support the premise that tanker deballasting is a major source of oil pollution on the Omani coast. Locally high levels were seen near offshore tanker loading facilities. Petroleum hydrocarbons in rock oysters increased in a south to north gradient consistent with beach tar observations. But relatively low hydrocarbon levels in biota coupled with observations of very little floating tar suggests that oil released in Omani coastal waters aggregates, sinks, and reaches the coast as heavy tar lumps. Except for elevated levels of Cd at two stations, heavy metal and chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations were low compared to more industrialized world areas. Suggestions are made to improve the effectiveness of future pollution studies in the Gulf Region.  相似文献

A wave flume experiment was conducted to study nutrient fluxes at water-sediment interface of Meiliang Bay under different hydrodynamic conditions. The results reveal that hydrodynamics has remarkable effects on nutrient fluxes in this area. With a bottom wave stress of 0.019 N m?2 (equivalent to disturbance caused by wind SE 5–7 m s?1 at the sediment sample site of Meiliang Bay), the fluxes of TN, TDN and NH4 +-N were separately 1.92 × 10?3, ?1.81 × 10?4 and 5.28 × 10?4 mg m?2 s?1 (positive for upward and negative for downward), but for TP, TDP and SRP, the fluxes were 5.69 × 10?4, 1.68 × 10?4 and ?1.29 × 10?4 mg m?2 s?1. In order to calculate the released amount of nutrients based on these results, statistic analysis on the long-term meteorological data was conducted. The result shows that the maximum lasting time for wind SE 5–7 m s?1 in this area is about 15 h in summer. Further calculation shows that 111 t TN, 32 t NH4 +-N, 34 t TP and 10 t TDP can be released into water (the sediment area was 47.45% of the whole surface area), resulting in concentration increase of 0.025, 0.007, 0.007 and 0.002 mg L?1 separately. With stronger disturbance (bottom wave stress is 0.217 N m?2 which is equivalent to disturbance caused by wind SE 10–11 m s?1 at the same site), there has been significant increase of nutrient fluxes (1.16 × 10?2, 6.76 × 10?3, 1.14 × 10?2 and 2.14 × 10?3 mg m?2 s?1 for TN, DTN and NH4 +-N and TP). The exceptions were TDP with flux having a decrease (measured to be 9.54 × 10?5 mg m?2 s?1) and SRP with flux having a small increase (measured to be 5.42 × 10?5 mg m?2 s?1). The same statistic analysis on meteorological data reveal that the maximum lasting time for wind SE 10–11 m s?1 is no more than 5 h. Based on the nutrient fluxes and the wind lasting-time, similar calculations were also made suggesting that 232 t TN, 134.9 t TDN, 228 t NH4 +-N, 42.7 t TP, 2.0 t TDP and 1.1 t SRP will be released from sediment at this hydrodynamic condition resulting in the concentration increases of 0.050, 0.029, 0.049, 0.009, 0.0004 and 0.0002 mg L?1. Therefore in shallow lakes, surface disturbance can lead to significant increase of nutrient concentrations although some components in water column had negative flux with weak disturbance (e.g. TDN and SRP in this experiment). In this case, sediment looks to be a source of nutrients. These nutrients deposited in sediment can be carried or released into water with sediment resuspension or changes of environmental conditions at water-sediment interface, which can have great effects on aquatic ecosystem and is also the characteristics of shallow lakes.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, diffusive boundary-layer thickness, and sediment composition on fluxes of inorganic N and P were estimated for sediment cores with oxidized surfaces from nearshore waters (2?C10?m) of a montane oligotrophic lake. Fluxes of N and P were not affected by diffusive boundary-layer thickness but were strongly affected by temperature. Below 16?°C, sediments sequestered small amounts of P and released small amounts of N. Above 16?°C, the seasonal maximum water temperature, sediments were substantial sources of N (NH4 +?CN?=?2?C24?mg?m?2 d?1; NO3 ??+?NO2 ??CN?=?2?C5?mg?m?2 d?1) and P (0.1?C0.4?mg?m?2 d?1), indicating potential responsiveness of sediment?Cwater nutrient exchange, and of corresponding phytoplankton growth, to synoptic warming.  相似文献

Over an oceanic peatland, the concentration of Na in fog averaged 38.1 mgl?1 compared with 1.8 mgl?1 in rain, resulting in a significant flux of mineral elements to the surface. Between 16 May and 20 June 1990 the average mass flux of Na to the bog surface by fog, rain, and dry deposition was 21.9, 10.4 and 7.0 mg m?2 d?1. There was little long-term storage of Na within the peatland system, where Na losses measured in stream runoff averaged 34.8 mg m2 d?1, and deep groundwater losses 4 mg m?2 d?1. Calcium and Mg were preferentially retained in the organic soil, whereas K was relatively mobile. Potassium tended to become concentrated in the unsaturated zone. Stream runoff had a consistently higher pH than groundwater, corresponding to higher Ca and Mg concentrations, which may have been from mineral sources in the headwater ponds. Otherwise, the stream water chemistry was closely related to groundwater in the upper layers of the peat deposit.  相似文献

A 3-D numerical modeling approach is applied to the effect of screening of the magnetotelluric (MT) field by high resistance (≥106 Ω m2) layers, which up to now has mainly been studied in terms of 2-D heterogeneous models of geological sections [Berdichevsky and Yakovlev, 1990]. Three-layer models above a poorly conducting basement (ρ=104 Ω m) are used. The resistance of the screening layer was generally taken equal to 2×106 Ω m2 and its thickness was varied from 200 to 2000 m. The resistivity of the host medium was set at 10 Ω m. Heterogeneities of a low and a high resistivity (ρ=10?3 and 104 Ω m, respectively) ranging in horizontal size from 4 to 40 km and having a height of 1–2.8 km (a protrusion on the basement) were examined. Based on calculations of these models, 2-D and 3-D screening effects were compared. The 3-D modeling determined values of model parameters at which the screening properties are preserved both in the case of a screen of limited horizontal dimensions and in the presence of a rupture in the screen comparable in horizontal size with the 3-D heterogeneity. As follows from the modeling results, the screening effect of the high resistivity model layers seriously complicates the use of MT soundings for the identification of a local heterogeneity of both a low and a high resistivity (ρ=10?3 and 104 Ω m, respectively) if its lateral size is smaller than the 4-km thickness of the studied three-layer section in question and its height is 1–1.5 km. The regular patterns of the screening effect revealed in this work are of interest in electromagnetic sounding applications.  相似文献

This study used realistic representations of cloudy atmospheres to assess errors in solar flux estimates associated with 1D radiative transfer models. A scene construction algorithm, developed for the EarthCARE mission, was applied to CloudSat, CALIPSO and MODIS satellite data thus producing 3D cloudy atmospheres measuring 61 km wide by 14,000 km long at 1 km grid-spacing. Broadband solar fluxes and radiances were then computed by a Monte Carlo photon transfer model run in both full 3D and 1D independent column approximation modes. Results were averaged into 1,303 (50 km)2 domains. For domains with total cloud fractions A c  < 0.7 top-of-atmosphere (TOA) albedos tend to be largest for 3D transfer with differences increasing with solar zenith angle. Differences are largest for A c  > 0.7 and characterized by small bias yet large random errors. Regardless of A c , differences between 3D and 1D transfer rarely exceed ±30 W m?2 for net TOA and surface fluxes and ±10 W m?2 for atmospheric absorption. Horizontal fluxes through domain sides depend on A c with ~20% of cases exceeding ±30 W m?2; the largest values occur for A c  > 0.7. Conversely, heating rate differences rarely exceed ±20%. As a cursory test of TOA radiative closure, fluxes produced by the 3D model were averaged up to (20 km)2 and compared to values measured by CERES. While relatively little attention was paid to optical properties of ice crystals and surfaces, and aerosols were neglected entirely, ~30% of the differences between 3D model estimates and measurements fall within ±10 W m?2; this is the target agreement set for EarthCARE. This, coupled with the aforementioned comparison between 3D and 1D transfer, leads to the recommendation that EarthCARE employ a 3D transport model when attempting TOA radiative closure.  相似文献

High demand for horticultural peat has increased peatland drainage and peat extraction in Canada. The hydrology and carbon cycling of these cutover peatlands is greatly altered, necessitating active restoration efforts to permit the regeneration of Sphagnum mosses and the re‐establishment of natural peatland function. The effect of peatland extraction and restoration on the export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was examined for three successive seasons (May to October, 1999 to 2001) at two different sites (cutover and restored) in eastern Québec. A shift towards higher DOC concentrations was observed following peatland extraction (maximum: 182·6 mg L?1) and concentrations remained high post‐restoration (maximum: 191·0 mg L?1). The cutover site exported more DOC than the restored site in all three study seasons. The highest exports occurred during the wettest year (1999), with cutover and restored site export of 10·3 and 4·8 g m?2, respectively. In 2000, 8·5 g C m?2 was released from the cutover site, while the restored site released less than half that amount (3·4 g C m?2). In 2001, the restored site released about the same amount of DOC as in the previous year (3·5 g C m?2), while the cutover site load dropped to 6·2 g C m?2. Stranded pelagic tarballs were collected from two beaches on the island of Bermuda from January 1982 until June 1983. A significant decrease in the quantity of stranded tarballs was noted after comparison to data collected from the same beaches in 1978-79. There is also an indication that the amount of tar arriving on Bermuda is less than or equal to the levels measured in 1971-72. The decline in the quantity of pelagic tar in the Sargasso Sea is attributed to a reduction in the operational discharges of oil tankers and a decrease in the occurrence of maritime oil spills since 1980.  相似文献

Petroleum hydrocarbons in the sediments of the Bothnian Bay, Baltic proper, Öresund, Kattegatt and Skagerrak were analysed in a survey of oil pollution along the Swedish coast in 1974 and 1975. Sixty-one of these sediment stations were revisited in 1982 and analysed with the methods used in the first survey. The mean content of petroleum hydrocarbons (paraffin-naphthene fraction) in the sediment surface showed a statistically significant increase from 199 to 252 μg g?1 dry wt. The main increase had taken place in the coastal areas. Within 0–20 km distance of urbanized areas (>20 000 inhabitants) petroleum hydrocarbons had increased from 371 to 447 μg g?1. Sediment levels increased from 76 to 117 μg g?1, 20–50 km from urbanized areas. The increase in these areas was equivalent to 0.119 g m?2 yr?1.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a key component of the global carbon cycle, but, to date, large uncertainties still exist on its source and fate in first‐order streams. In a 23 ha rangeland and steep‐slope headwater of South Africa, our aim was to quantify the contribution of overland flow (OF), soil water (SW) and ground water (GW) to DOC fluxes (DOCF), and to interpret the results in terms of DOC sources and fate. The average 2010–2011 DOC concentration (DOCC) at the catchment outlet was 4.7 mg C l?1 with a standard error of ±2.5 mg C l?1, which was significantly lower than in SW (15.2 ± 1.6 mg C l?1) and OF (11.9 ± 0.8 mg C l?1), but higher than in GW (2.3 ± 0.6 mg C l?1). Based on end‐member mixing using Si and Na concentration in the water compartments, the average SW contribution to DOCF was 66.4%, followed by OF (30.0%) and GW (3.6%). The resulting estimated DOCF at the catchment outlet was 8.05 g C m2 y?1. This was much higher than the observed value of 2.80 g C m2 y?1, meaning that 5.25 g C m2 y?1 or 65% of the DOC is lost during its downslope and/or downstream transport to the catchment outlet. Complementary investigations revealed that the DOCC in SW dropped from 15.2 ± 1.6 to 2.6 ± 0.3 mg C l?1 during its downslope transport to the river system, which corresponded to a net loss of 5.10 g C m2 y?1, or 97% of the catchment DOC losses. These results on DOC sources and potential fate in headwaters are expected to improve our understanding of the impact of hydrology on the global C‐cycle. Runoff and sediment lost due to water erosion were recorded for 36 (1 m2) plots with varying types of vegetative cover located on sloping gypsiferous fields in the South of Madrid. 75% of the events had maximum 30‐minute intensity (I30) less than 10 mm h?1 in the period studied (1994–2005). As for the vegetative cover, maximum correlation between runoff and soil loss was found in the least protected plots (0–40% cover) during the most intense rainfall events; however, a significant positive correlation was also observed in plots with greater coverage (40–60%). If coverage exceeded 60%, rainfall erosivity declined. The average amount of sediment produced in high‐intensity events was significantly greater (approximately 7 g m?2 per I30 event >10 mm h?1) than that produced in the rest of the moderate‐intensity events (approximately 3 g m?2 per I30 event <10 mm h?1), but due to the high rate of occurrence of the latter throughout the year sediment loss during the period studied totaled 128 g m?2. By comparison, only 40 g m?2 was produced by the I30 events greater than 10 mm h?1. Even though the amount of soil lost is relatively insignificant from a quantitative standpoint, the organic matter content lost in the sediment (six times more than in the soil) is a permanent loss that threatens the development of the surface of the soil in this area when the vegetative cover is less than 40%. The soil here experiences a chronic loss of 0·02 mm annually as a consequence of frequent, moderate events, in addition to any loss produced by extraordinary events, which, though less frequent, are much more erosive. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) originating in peatlands can be mineralized to carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), two potent greenhouse gases. Knowledge of the dynamics of DOC export via run‐off is needed for a more robust quantification of C cycling in peatland ecosystems, a prerequisite for realistic predictions of future climate change. We studied dispersion pathways of DOC in a mountain‐top peat bog in the Czech Republic (Central Europe), using a dual isotope approach. Although δ13CDOC values made it possible to link exported DOC with its within‐bog source, δ18OH2O values of precipitation and run‐off helped to understand run‐off generation. Our 2‐year DOC–H2O isotope monitoring was complemented by a laboratory peat incubation study generating an experimental time series of δ13CDOC values. DOC concentrations in run‐off during high‐flow periods were 20–30 mg L?1. The top 2 cm of the peat profile, composed of decaying green moss, contained isotopically lighter C than deeper peat, and this isotopically light C was present in run‐off in high‐flow periods. In contrast, baseflow contained only 2–10 mg DOC L?1, and its more variable C isotope composition intermittently fingerprinted deeper peat. DOC in run‐off occasionally contained isotopically extremely light C whose source in solid peat substrate was not identified. Pre‐event water made up on average 60% of the water run‐off flux, whereas direct precipitation contributed 40%. Run‐off response to precipitation was relatively fast. A highly leached horizon was identified in shallow catotelm. This peat layer was likely affected by a lateral influx of precipitation. Within 36 days of laboratory incubation, isotopically heavy DOC that had been initially released from the peat was replaced by isotopically lighter DOC, whose δ13C values converged to the solid substrate and natural run‐off. We suggest that δ13C systematics can be useful in identification of vertically stratified within‐bog DOC sources for peatland run‐off.  相似文献

Quiet daily magnetic variations recorded by magnetometer arrays in Australia are analysed to obtain electromagnetic response parameters for two parts of the Australian continent remote from electrical conductivity anomalies. The parameters are based on measurements of vertical-field and horizontal-field spatial gradient, and three different methods are followed in their computation. The response parameters are checked for consistency with a compilation of globally-determined Earth apparent resistivities, and are then interpreted for one-dimensional conductivity structure in the two different parts of the continent. There is evidence that the rise in electrical conductivity from 10?1 S m?1 to 100 S m?1 which occurs at a depth of order 500 km beneath central Australia may occur at a substantially shallower depth of order 230 km beneath southeast Australia.  相似文献
