The isotopic composition of lead was determined for two carbonaceous, two H, and two L chondrites. All are falls. The206Pb/204Pb ratios cover a range from 9.45 to 37.33; the207Pb/204Pb ratios range from 10.39 to 26.10. The isotopic data define a207Pb/206Pb age of 4.635 AE. Uranium and lead concentration data indicate that the isotopic lead ages for the Bruderheim chondrite are concordant within approximately 20%. This contrasts with lead data in the literature for chondrites, which consistently indicate discordant isotopic lead ages due to large excesses of radiogenic lead by factors of two or more. The isotopic lead ages for Pultusk may be concordant; those for a sample of Richardton are not. The lack of concordance for Richardton is not due to the analytical procedures, rather it is likely a result of the handling history of the chondrite prior to analysis. The L-3 chondrite, Mezo-Madaras contains such a high concentration of lead - 5.27 PPM - that accurate ratios for primordial lead can be obtained. These are 206Pb/204Pb= 9.310;207Pb/204Pb= 10.296, values which are in close agreement with a recently reported measurement on lead in troilite from the Canyon Diablo iron meteorite.  相似文献

207Pb/204Pb-206Pb/204Pb whole meteorite isochrons for Richardton (H5) and Farmington (L5) are presented and give Pb-Pb ages of 4.545 ± 0.010 and 4.620 ± 0.010 Ga respectively (errors ± 2σ). The Pb-Pb isochron for Farmington passes below the Can?on Diablo troilite composition, which may therefore not be the initial Pb composition for this meteorite. All samples show an apparent excess radiogenic lead for single-stage (closed-system) evolution when Can?on Diablo troilite is used for the initial lead composition. Evidence is presented to show that the apparent excess Pb cannot be explained by terrestrial contamination. There is no unique isotopic composition for initial lead that yields concordant ages at 4.55 Ga for all samples for either meteorite. The data likewise cannot be reconciled to Can?on Diablo initial lead through any of the conventional two- and three-stage evolution models. The apparent excess Pb, with respect to a Can?on Diablo troilite composition and a single-stage closed-system history, and the apparent inhomogeneous initial Pb isotopic compositions, appear to be real. This may be an indication that the U-Pb systems in these meteorites are disturbed, but this disturbance cannot be described consistently by any of the conventional episodic evolution models.  相似文献

Historical volcanic rocks of the Aeolian islands range in composition from shoshonitic basalts to rhyolites, which might reflect fractional crystallization of a shoshonitic parent magma. However Sr and Pb isotopic data indicate a more complex history. The shoshonitic basalts at present erupted at Stromboli, although chemically similar to the postulated parent magma, are genetically unrelated to the other studied rocks. Sr isotopes indicate that Vulcano, Vulcanello and Lipari had independent magma sources. It is proposed that crustal contamination raised the Sr isotopic composition of the Lipari rhyolites. The rocks of these island are related by a common very steep trend of207Pb/204Pbvs. 206Pb/204Pb. Such a trend is a common feature of orogenic magmas and shows that Pb was derived by mixing of at least two components. Presently it is impossible to constrain precisely either the timing or the physical meaning of the Pb end members. The Pb isotopic trend in the Eolian island is very distinct from those recorded in volcanic rocks both from behind the arc (Etna, Iblean Mts.) and from Central and Southern Italy.  相似文献

Nitrogen contents range from a few parts per million in ordinary chondrites and achondrites to several hundred parts per million in enstatite chondrites and carbonaceous chondrites. Four major isotopic groups are recognized: (1) C1 and C2 carbonaceous chondrites have δ15N of+30to+50%.; (2) enstatite chondrites have δ15N of?30to?40‰; (3) C3 chondrites have low δ15N with large internal variations; (4) ordinary chondrites have δ15N of?10to+20‰. The major variations are primary, representing isotopic abundances established at the time of condensation and accretion. Secondary processes, such as spallation reactions, solar wind implantation and metamorphic loss may cause small but observable isotopic variations in particular cases. The large isotopic difference between enstatite chondrites and carbonaceous chondrites cannot be accounted for by equilibrium condensation from a homogeneous nebular gas, and requires either unusually large kinetic effects, or a temporal or spatial variation of isotopic composition of the nebula. Nitrogen isotopic heterogeneity in the nebula due to nuclear processes has not been firmly established, but may be required to account for the large variations found within the Allende and Leoville meteorites. The unique carbonaceous chondrite, Renazzo, has δ15N of+170%., which is well beyond the range of all other data, and also requires a special source. It is not yet possible, from the meteoritic data, to establish the mode of accretion of nitrogen onto the primitive Earth.  相似文献

Approximation of terrestrial lead isotope evolution by a two-stage model   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Parameters on which models for terrestrial lead isotope evolution are based have recently been revised. These parameters are the isotopic composition of troilite lead, the age of the meteorite system and the decay constants of uranium and thorium. As a result, the normal single-stage model in which the age of the earth is taken to be that of the meteorite system is now untenable.A two-stage model has been constructed which permits the age of the earth to be that of the meteorite system and which also yields good model ages for samples of all ages. The new model postulates that lead developed initially from a primordial composition assumed to be that of troilite lead beginning at 4.57 b.y. ago. The average values of 238U/204Pb and 232Th/204Pb for this first stage were 7.19 and 32.21 respectively. At approximately 3.7 b.y. ago differentiation processes brought about the conditions of a second stage, in which 238U/204Pb ≈ 9.74 and 232Th/204Pb ≈ 37.19 in those portions of the earth which took part in mixing events, giving rise to average lead.  相似文献

The Ca-Al-rich inclusions within Allende are described as quickly frozen non-equilibrated partial melts arising from energetic collisions between centimeter-sized mechanical accumulations of cold presolar grains. The resulting minerals are refractory-rich because refractory supernova condensates are the most persistent components of the preheated accumulates. The shock heating drives off most of the more volatile matrix that had accumulated cold around the refractory cores, which quickly recrystallize while picking up isotopically homogenized trace elements. This picture is advanced to account for the isotopic anomalies in those elements for which fractionation of stardust from gas also fractionates a special isotope whose stellar condensation history can be expected to have been special.I call the anomaly that would have existed before the special component was added anisotopic ghost. These ghosts can be larger than the special anomaly surviving today in meteorites and planets. I argue that ghosts in26Mg/24Mg,87Sr/86Sr, and206,207Pb/204Pb have caused erroneous cosmoradiogenic estimates of large age differences between meteorites, their special phases, and even the Moon.  相似文献

Lead (Pb) isotope ratios were measured in the marine macroalga Iridaea cordata collected from four locations in the Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. Based on the masses of thalli collected, samples analysed in this study were likely to be a mixture of one and two year old thalli. For a sample of thalli of various ages (<12 months to 2 years old) from the same site there was no apparent variation in Pb concentration or Pb isotope ratio with thallus mass/age, indicating that contaminant sources had been constant over the lifetime of the thalli sampled. I.cordata samples close to the Thala Valley waste disposal site (Brown Bay Inner) near the Australian Station, Casey, displayed isotopic signatures (208Pb/204Pb 35.99; 206Pb/207Pb 1.066; n = 3; average values shown) trending towards that possessed by major Australian Pb sources (Broken Hill and Mt Isa, 208Pb/204Pb 35.60; 206Pb/207Pb 1.041) suggesting that these samples had been exposed to anthropogenic Pb originating from the Thala Valley waste disposal site. Material collected hundreds of metres from the tip location at Brown Bay Outer had isotopic values (208Pb/204Pb 36.32; 206Pb/207Pb 1.088; n = 10) intermediate between Brown Bay Inner and sites further from the contaminant source at Sparkes Bay and Wilkes (208Pb/204Pb 36.46; 206Pb/207Pb 1.094; n = 4) showing that contaminant transport was predominantly restricted to Brown Bay Inner. This study demonstrates that the isotope ratios of Pb in marine macroalgae can provide valuable information as to the origin and extent of heavy metal flux in a marine environment.  相似文献

Late Cretaceous (66.2 ± 0.5 Ma amphibole and 66.7 ± 0.2 Ma phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar ages) nephelinitic volcanic rocks from Godzilla Seamount in the eastern North Atlantic (34°N latitude) have trace element and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf-isotope compositions similar to the Enriched Mantle I (EM-I) endmember, except for their low 207Pb/204Pb relative to 206Pb/204Pb ratios (206Pb/204Pbin = 17.7, 207Pb/204Pbin = 15.34) plotting below the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line on the uranogenic Pb isotope diagram. O isotope data on amphibole separates are mantle-like (δ18O = 5.6–5.8‰). Age and location of the isolated Godzilla Seamount, however, preclude it from being derived from the Madeira or Canary hotspots, making a lower-mantle origin unlikely. Therefore we propose derivation from a shallow (lithospheric/asthenospheric) melting anomaly. As observed in mid-ocean-ridge and ocean-island basalts, there is a systematic decrease of 207Pb/204Pb ratios (and Δ7/4) in the individual EM-I endmember type localities towards northern latitudes with Godzilla lying on the extension of this trend. This trend is mirrored in ultra-potassic volcanic rocks such as lamproites and kimberlites, which reflect the composition of enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Therefore, a global pattern in 207Pb/204Pb ratios and Δ7/4 is suggested. The geochemical composition of EM-I endmember type localities, including Godzilla lavas, and the enriched (DUPAL) anomaly in the southern hemisphere could reflect derivation from ancient, metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle. We propose a two-stage model to explain the trace element and isotopic composition of the EM-I mantle endmember localities worldwide: 1) during the early history of the Earth, subcontinental lithosphere was metasomatized by melts from subducted slabs along convergent margins generating high μ (238U/204Pb) sources, and 2) as the Earth cooled, hydrous fluids replaced hydrous melts as the main slab component metasomatizing the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (generating EM-I sources with lower μ). In accordance with this model, the global variations in 207Pb/204Pb ratios and Δ7/4 could reflect geographic differences in μ and/or the age at which the transition from stages 1 to 2 took place in the Archaean lithosphere. The model would require a re-definition of the EM-I endmember to low 206Pb/204Pb, high 208Pb/204Pb (positive Δ8/4) but variable 207Pb/204Pb (positive and negative Δ7/4).  相似文献

A unique terrestrial large impact melt sheet is preserved in the 1850 Ma Sudbury Structure, Ontario. We have undertaken a Pb isotope investigation of the southern limb of the melt sheet, termed the South Range Main Mass. The model initial Pb isotope ratios (207Pb/204Pbm) vary stratigraphically through the predominantly quartz monzogabbroic Lower Unit, varying from 15.40 to 15.45 at the base to ca. 15.35 at the top of the sequence. Lateral variations of similar range occur in basal Lower Unit samples over scales of less than 5 km. The range of these variations is similar to those of locally exposed upper crustal target rocks, and it is evident that the melt sheet has efficiently preserved inherited variability. During the violent phases of crater formation superheated impact melts are expected to be well-mixed mechanically, therefore significant post-impact melting of target rocks, fallback material and entrained clasts is required to explain such heterogeneity. The Sudbury Structure hosts world class Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide ore deposits. Systematic variation in 207Pb/204Pbm occurs throughout sulphide ores within the Creighton Embayment, from massive (15.42–15.45) to interstitial (ca. 15.40–15.41) and disseminated (ca. 15.39) sulphide. Linking the Pb isotope composition of these ores to the immediately overlying Lower Unit stratigraphy, a protracted sulphide segregation history is apparent. Massive sulphides segregated early, prior to or during initial silicate crystallisation, although the total time involved in sulphide accumulation spanned much of the crystallisation of the Lower Unit. It is also shown that lateral variations in Ni depletion throughout the Main Mass correlate with Pb isotopes. Those segments with the strongest chalcophile element depletion signatures, reflecting the accumulation of significant basal sulphides, have high initial Pb isotope values, consistent with early sulphide segregation. The characterisation of Pb isotopic heterogeneity has therefore provided insights into the evolution and scales of mixing of the melt sheet, with the identified chemical variability between melt cells having a significant influence on ore forming processes.  相似文献

A new technique for high-precision isotopic analyses of Ni was developed and applied to terrestrial samples, Allende inclusions and materials from other meteorites. Most of the Allende inclusions analysed here were previously reported to contain isotopically anomalous Ti. In contrast, the Ni isotopic abundances are indistinguishable from normal within presently obtainable precision with only one possible exception. The latter inclusion was shown by others to contain a significantly fractionated magnesium isotopic pattern of 9‰/amu. A normal Ni isotopic pattern has also been observed for the chromite/carbon fraction of an Allende acid residue which is known to contain heavy noble gases of highly anomalous isotopic composition. All other meteoritic samples analysed (Khohar matrix and chondrules, Murray matrix, a Tieschitz chondrule and an Orgueil magnetic fraction) also show normal isotopic compositions of Ni; no evidence for effects from now extinct60Fe could be detected. In spite of ubiquitous isotopic anomalies in Ti from normal Allende inclusions, there is no signature of isotopic variations in Ni from the same samples. Possible constraints for the nucleosynthesis of iron peak elements and for astrophysical and cosmochemical conditions during formation of the solar system are discussed.  相似文献

The lead content of five whole-rock peridotite inclusions (four lherzolites and one harzburgite) in alkali basalt ranges from 82 to 570 ppb (parts per billion). Approximately 30–60 ppb of this amount can be accounted for by analyzed major silicate minerals (olivine ≤ 10 ppb; enstatite 5–28 ppb; chrome diopside ~400 ppb). Through a series of acid leaching experiments, the remainder of the lead is shown to be quite labile and to reside in either glassy or microcrystalline veinlets or accessory mineral phases, such as apatite and mica. The lead isotopic composition of the peridotites (206Pb/204Pb= 18.01–18.90;207Pb/204Pb= 15.52–15.61;208Pb/204Pb= 37.80–38.86) lies within the range of values defined by many modern volcanic rocks and, in particular, is essentially coextensive with the abyssal tholeiite field. In all but one instance, isotopic differences were found between the peridotite and its host alkali basalt. Two of the peridotites clearly demonstrated internal isotopic heterogeneity between leachable and residual fractions that could not simply be due to contamination by the host basalt. However, there is no evidence that these ultramafic rocks form some layer in the mantle with isotopic characteristics fundamentally different from those of the magma sources of volcanic rocks.  相似文献

Isotopic anomalies in Mo and Zr have recently been reported for bulk chondrites and iron meteorites and have been interpreted in terms of a primordial nucleosynthetic heterogeneity in the solar nebula. We report precise Zr isotopic measurements of carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondrites, eucrites, mesosiderites and lunar rocks. All bulk rock samples yield isotopic compositions that are identical to the terrestrial standard within the analytical uncertainty. No anomalies in 92Zr are found in any samples including high Nb/Zr eucrites and high and low Nb/Zr calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs). These data are consistent with the most recent estimates of <10−4 for the initial 92Nb/93Nb of the solar system. There exists a trace of isotopic heterogeneity in the form of a small excess of r-process 96Zr in some refractory CAIs and some metal-rich phases of Renazzo. A more striking enrichment in 96Zr is found in acetic acid leachates of the Allende CV carbonaceous chondrite. These data indicate that the r- and s-process Zr components found in presolar grains were well mixed on a large scale prior to planetary accretion. However, some CAIs formed before mixing was complete, such that they were able to sample a population of r-process-enriched material. The maximum amount of additional r-process component that was added to the otherwise well-mixed Zr in the molecular cloud or disk corresponds to ∼0.01%.  相似文献

New isotopic analyses are presented for 3 plagioclase-rich fractions and one mafic fraction from ferroan anorthosite 60025. The observed206Pb/204Pb ratios vary between 52.5 and 60.5, all much higher than the ratio for terrestrial contamination. In a207Pb/206Pb204Pb/206Pb correlation diagram, the plagioclase data define a model PbPb age of 4.520 ± 0.007 AE using meteoritic primordial lead for the non-radiogenic component. In the concordia diagram the plagioclase data yield intersections at 4.503 ± 0.007 and 0.28 AE. The meaning of the lower intercept is obscure. The earlier 60025 analysis of Tera and Wasserburg [1], with an observed206Pb/204Pb of 23.0, agrees closely with the new plagioclase data in the isotope correlation and concordia diagrams. Since the apparent age does not correlate with the206Pb/204Pb ratios and U contents of the samples, it does not appear to be controlled by terrestrial lead contamination. The time-averaged μ values for the plagioclase leads are exceptionally low, 16–55, and agree within factors of 2 with the observed μ values in the samples. These are much lower than the values observed for mafic rocks or their sources, showing that the anorthosite lead has never been associated for a substantial length of time with any high μ source. In this way the 60025 data differ substantially from UPb data for two other lunar anorthosites, 15415 and 60015. The results suggest that the averaged model Pb ages of 4.51 ± 0.01 AE closely approximate the crystallization age for the plagioclase fraction of the anorthosite, and that it dates back to an early phase in lunar history. One sample from the mafic fraction of 60025 yields a younger model Pb age of 4.42 AE. The age may have been lowered by post-crystallization disturbances or perhaps this fraction is not coeval with the plagioclase fraction.  相似文献

We have analyzed the nickel isotopic composition of meteoritic materials by high-precision mass spectrometry. The samples analyzed include almost all meteorite types for which large isotopic anomalies have been reported for oxygen, silver, magnesium and titanium. These samples are C1, C3, L, LL, H and E chondrites, IVB irons, Eagle Station pallasite and inclusion, matrix and “whole rock” samples of the Allende meteorite. The result is that we have not found any anomaly for nickel isotopic compositions within our accuracy of 0.7‰ for61Ni/60Ni, 0.4-0.08‰ for62Ni/60Ni and 1–1.5‰ for64Ni/60Ni.  相似文献

New trace element and Hf, Nd, and Pb isotope data are reported for 22 basalts collected between 22°N and 35°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. (La / Sm)N ratios identify the presence of enriched (E)-MORB in the northernmost part of this area and normal (N)-MORB elsewhere. A negative correlation is observed when 143Nd / 144Nd is plotted against 206Pb / 204Pb, 207Pb / 204Pb, and 208Pb / 204Pb, whereas 176Hf / 177Hf appears not to correlate with any of the other isotopic ratios. The E-MORB samples are characterized by high 206Pb / 204Pb, 207Pb / 204Pb, 208Pb / 204Pb, and low 143Nd / 144Nd. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of Pb isotopes alone identifies three, and only three, significant geochemical end-members (‘components’). Including Nd and Hf isotopic data in the PCA produces spurious components, partly because of curved mixing relationships, and partly because of fractionation during melting. Our preferred interpretation of why 176Hf / 177Hf is decoupled from the other isotopic ratios is, as inferred from recent experimental data, that the Hf isotopic compositions of the melt and the residue fail to equilibrate during melting. A strong correlation between (Sr / Nd)N and (Eu / Eu*)N indicates that plagioclase is a residual phase of N-MORB, but not of E-MORB melting. The three end-members identified in this study are the depleted mantle, a common-type component, and an enriched plume-type end-member. The common, or ‘C’-type, end-member is characteristic of E-MORB and may itself be a mixture containing recycled oceanic crust (the MORB suite, terrigenous sediments, and/or oceanic plateaus). The plume-type end-member is likely to represent the lower mantle and may involve some primordial material. It is shown that mantle isochrons in general and the Pb–Pb isochron in particular do not characterize a specific geodynamic process acting to create mantle heterogeneities.  相似文献

Cosmogenic neon in sodium-rich oligoclase feldspar from the ordinary chondrites St. Severin and Guaren?a is characterized by an unusually high22Ne/21Ne = 1.50 ± 0.02. This high ratio is due to the cosmogenic22Ne/21Ne production ratio in sodium which is 2.9 ± 0.3, two to three times the production ratio in any other target element. The relative production rate of21Ne per gram sodium is one quarter the production rate per gram magnesium. The striking enrichment of22Ne relative to21Ne in sodium arises from enhanced indirect production from23Na via22Na.The unusual composition of cosmogenic neon in sodium and sodium-rich minerals explains the high22Ne/21Ne ratios observed in inclusions of the Allende carbonaceous chondrite, and observed during low-temperature extraction of neon from ordinary chondrites. The isotopic composition of cosmogenic neon released during the stepwise heating of a trapped gas-rich meteorite containing sodium-rich phases can be expected to vary, and use of a constant cosmogenic neon composition to derive the composition of the trapped gas may not be justified. Preferential loss of this22Ne-enriched cosmogenic neon from meteoritic feldspar can result in a 2–3% drop in the measured cosmogenic22Ne/21Ne ratio in a bulk meteorite sample. This apparent change in composition can lead to overestimation of the minimum pre-atmospheric mass of the meteorite by a factor of two.  相似文献

In an earlier study of Mesozoic and Cenozoic mineralization in Central America and the Caribbean region, we found that lead isotopic compositions of deposits in northern Central America, which is underlain by a pre-Mesozoic craton, ranged to higher206Pb/204Pb and207Pb/204Pb compositions than did deposits from elsewhere in the region, where the basement is Mesozoic oceanic material. Using 16 analyses for 12 new deposits, as well as new analyses for 11 of the samples studied previously, we have found that lead isotopic compositions correlate closely with crustal type but show little or no correlation with depth to the M-discontinuity. The deposits are divisible into three main groups including (in order of increasing207Pb/204Pb and208Pb/204Pb ratio): (1) deposits in southern Central America and all deposits in the Greater Antilles except Cuba; (2) all deposits in northern Central America; and (3) the Cuban deposits. Southern Central American and Caribbean lead is higher in207Pb/204Pb and208Pb/204Pb than most mid-ocean ridge basalts but could have been derived directly or indirectly from undepleted mantle. Northern Central America can be divided into the Maya block, which belongs to the Americas plate, and the Chortis block, which belongs to the Caribbean plate. Maya block deposits fall along a linear array whereas those of the Chortis block (except the Monte Cristo deposit) form a cluster. These results suggest that the Maya block is underlain by crust or mantle with a large range of U/Pb and Th/U ratios, whereas the Chortis block basement is more homogeneous. Two-stage model calculations indicate an age of about 2280±310 m.y. for the Maya block basement, although no such rocks are known in the region. Comparison of the Chortis block data to our recently published lead isotopic analyses of Mexican deposits shows considerable similarities suggesting that the Chortis block could have been derived from Mexico.  相似文献

Lead isotopic measurements were made on Andean igneous rocks of Jurassic to Recent age in Moquegua and Tacna Departments, southernmost Peru, to clarify the petrogenesis of the rocks and, in particular, to investigate the effect of crustal thickness on rock composition. This location in the Cordillera Occidental is ideal for such a study because the ca. 2 Ga Precambrian basement rocks (Arequipa massif) have a distinct Pb isotopic signature which is an excellent tracer of crustal interaction, and because geomorphological research has shown that the continental crust was here thickened drastically in the later Tertiary.Seven samples of quartz diorites and granodiorites from the Ilo and Toquepala intrusive complexes, and seven samples of Toquepala Group subaerial volcanics were analyzed for Pb isotopic compositions. The plutonic rocks range in age from Jurassic to Eocene; the volcanic rocks are all Late Cretaceous to Eocene. With one exception, the Pb isotopic ratios are in the ranges 206Pb/204Pb= 18.52–18.75, 207Pb/204Pb= 15.58–15.65, and 208Pb/204Pb= 38.53–38.74. The data reflect very little or no interaction with old continental material of the Arequipa massif type.Lead from four Miocene Huaylillas Formation ash-flow tuffs, two Pliocene Capillune Formation andesites and five Quaternary Barroso Group andesites has lower 206Pb/204Pb than that in the pre-Miocene rocks, but relatively high 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb (206Pb/204Pb= 18.16–18.30, 207Pb/204Pb= 15.55–15.63, 208Pb/204Pb= 38.45–38.90). Tilton and Barreiro [9] have shown that contamination by Arequipa massif granulites can explain the isotopic composition of the Barosso Group lavas, and the new data demonstrate that this effect is evident, to varying degrees, in all the analysed Neogene volcanic rocks. The initial incorporation of such basement material into the magma coincided with the Early Miocene uplift of this segment of the Cordillera Occidental [32], and thus with the creation of a thick crustal root. The data strongly imply a relationship between crustal thickness and degree of crustal contamination of magmas in this area, but a rigorous relationship is not yet established.  相似文献
