It has been hypothesized (Moore et al., 1978; O'Brien et al., 1978), that equatorial upwelling and subsequent coastal upwelling on the eastern boundary of the Atlantic Ocean are the result of eastward propagating equatorially trapped Kelvin waves in the Atlantic. Concurrent satellite and ship sea surface temperature observations taken during the GATE experiment permit validation of the satellite data as well as relating sea surface temperature (SST) variability to the local current dynamics. A method based on cross-correlations and cross-spectra of the SST field at various locations is utilized to test the Kelvin wave hypothesis. Significant periodic variation of time lags in the SST variability in the eastern Atlantic is observed by the spectral techniques. Satellite data for the 1974 summer show periodic variability which fits either eastward or westward propagating waves with 1 m s-1 phase speed, i.e., SST supports the quasi-continuous presence of Kelvin or Yanai waves. We find no evidence for a seasonally solitary eastward propagating signal in the eastern Atlantic from SST.  相似文献

Several computed cases of a model of the subtropical gyre with a partially ventilated thermocline (Luytenet al., 1982) are presented to illustrate the sensitivity of the field of density stratification, mean flow and location of unventilated regions to slight changes in surface boundary conditions. The structure of the low latitude thermocline is less sensitive to climatic change in amount of water forced down by convergence of wind-driven surface layers at higher latitudes than might be expected, even allowing for the well-known localness of vertically integrated meridional transport. On the other hand changes in structure at low latitudes do arise from changes in boundary conditions on the surface density at higher latitudes. The main climatic inference for transient tracers injected into a thermocline in steady state is that there are two time-scales in the subtropical thermocline: an advective time scale associated with distance from regions of direct ventilation of a density layer at the surface, and a subsurface diffusive time scale from ventilated to unventilated region.  相似文献

In this work, we study the characteristics of a stably stratifiedatmospheric boundary layer using large-eddy simulation (LES).In order to simulate the stable planetary boundary layer, wedeveloped a modified version of the two-part subgrid-scalemodel of Sullivan et al. This improved version of themodel is used to simulate a highly cooled yet fairly windy stableboundary layer with a surface heat flux of(W)o = -0.05 m K s-1and a geostrophic wind speed of Ug = 15 m s-1.Flow visualization and evaluation of the turbulencestatistics from this case reveal the development ofa continuously turbulent boundary layer with small-scalestructures. The stability of the boundary layercoupled with the presence of a strong capping inversionresults in the development of a dominant gravity wave atthe top of the stable boundary layer that appears to be relatedto the most unstable wave predicted by the Taylor–Goldsteinequation. As a result of the decay of turbulence aloft,a strong-low level jet forms above the boundary layer.The time dependent behaviour of the jet is compared with Blackadar'sinertial oscillation analysis.  相似文献

本文对Nickerson的中尺度模式作了一些修改,加入了地表热量平衡方程和一个13层的土壤层模式,并对Therry等的行星边界层参数化形式作了调整.使之较好地模拟出太阳辐射和地表温度的日变化.对不同地形、纬度和夏、冬季海陆风的模拟表明,本模式具有较强的海陆风模拟能力.  相似文献

Summary The problem of representing the drag due to subgridscale orography is examined. Results from model simulations are used to illustrate clear deficiencies in the global angular momentum budgets and possible ways of correcting for these deficiencies are considered. It is argued that a formulation for the stress due to subgridscale gravity waves is required, as was first recognized by Boer et al. (1984a, b), and the impact of a scheme based on Palmer et al. (1986) is presented. The scheme is improved by using directionally-dependent subgridscale orographic variances. Results from 90-day integrations using the ECMWF and UKMO models with similar resolutions are very much in accord both with and without a wave drag parametrization scheme; showing much improved wintertime circulations.The relationship between the wave drag and the model orography is examined with the use of idealized stress profiles whereby the wave drag is limited to either near the surface or in the stratosphere. A combination of parametrized wave drag with an envelope orography performs best at this stage of development.Results are presented from a substantial series of ten-day forecast experiments with the ECMWF operational model using mean and (1 ) envelope orographies, these show significant improvements in forecast skill.With 26 Figures  相似文献

Diese bisher verborgen gebliebene, aberheute unabweisbare Tatsache liefert den Schlüssel zur Lösung der sehr zahlreich gewordenen zyklogenetischen Probleme, zu ihrer übersichtlichen Ordnung und zur Beseitigung ihrer Widersprüche. Vor allem das Hauptproblem, diegemeinsame Entstehung des zyklonalenWirbels und Tiefdruckgebiets inallen Schichten der Troposphäre (und Substratosphäre) wird dadurch zwanglos erledigt. 45 Einzelergebnisse sind am Schluß der Abschnitte 5 bis 49 zusammengefaßt.
Summary The formation of atmospheric cyclones depends substantially on friction and exchange, friction of the air at the earth's surface on the one, isentropic lateral mixing on the other hand. This fact, hitherto unknown but now incontestable, provides us with the key for the solution of the many cyclogenetic problems, for their classification and for the elimination of contradictions. Above all the central problem gets a satisfactory solution: the joint formation of cyclonic whirl and depression through all layers of troposphere (and substratosphere). 45 individual results are summarized at the end of each paragraph 5 to 49.

Résumé La formation des dépressions atmosphériques repose essentiellement sur le frottement et l'échange turbulent: frottement de l'air sur le sol, échange turbulent entre petites masses d'air ascendantes et descendantes. Ces faits ignorés jusqu'ici, mais aujourd'hui incontestables, donnent la solution des nombreux problèmes de cyclogénèse et de leur classement, et écartent leurs contradictions. A ce point de vue on peut aisément expliquer la formation simultanée de tourbillons atmosphériques et de zones de basse pression dans toutes les couches de la troposphère et de la substratosphère. Les résultats de 45 problèmes distincts sont résumés à la fin des paragraphes 5 à 49.

Summary Using scattering coefficient profiles of the Pinatubo aerosols derived from the observation of skylight polarization and lidar backscattering ratio in Beijing, the radiative effect of Pinatubo aerosols in middle latitudes is assessed by a delta-four-stream radiative transfer model. It is shown that the Pinatubo aerosols significantly change the radiation field. Due to the presence of the volcanic aerosols, the downward short wave flux at the surface decreases with a maximum of 8 W/m2 while the upward short wave flux at the top of the atmosphere increases with a maximum of 6.5 W/m2. The volcanic aerosols are injected into the region bounded below by the tropopause and up by the 25 km level. The upward and downward radiative fluxes are changed in opposite directions at those two boundaries. Downward short wave fluxes below the tropopause are 7–9 W/m2 less than background values and downward long wave fluxes below the tropopause are 2 W/m2 more than background values. Upward short wave fluxes above 25 km level is 5–7 W/m2 more and upward fluxes above there are about 3 W/m2 less.The effects of the Pinatubo aerosols on heating rates are also significant. The maximum increase in the short wave heating rate can be as large as 0.2 K/day at 22 km. The increase in the long wave heating rate is less with a maximum amplitude of about 0.15 K/day. The maximum increase of the total heating rate is about 0.35 K/day, which is comparable with the heating rate caused by the ozone 9.6 µm band in this region.Results of this study are compared with studies of Lacis et al. (1992) and Russell et al. (1993) as well as ERBE measurements. The results generally agree well. Causes for the differences are analyzed.Based on the numerical study, it is also found that the LOWTRAN fresh volcanic model is not representative for the Pinatubo aerosols.With 9 Figures  相似文献

The heated boundary layer for DAY 33 of the Wangara data of southeast Australia (Clarke et al., 1971) is studied numerically with a three-dimensional model using 64000 grid points within a volume 5 km on a side and 2 km deep. Subgrid-scale transport equations were utilized in place of eddy-coefficient formulations. The rate of growth of the mixed layer is examined and parameterized, and the vertical profiles of heat flux, moisture flux and momentum fluxes are examined. The momentum boundary layer is found to coincide essentially with the mixed layer, and to grow with the latter during the hours of solar heating of the surface.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

An attempt is made to explain the physical mechanism for the Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment (MODE) bottom pressure observations of Brown et al. (1975) by means of a joint laboratory and theoretical study. First, possible relevant effects in an f-plane model are considered, where pressure driving forms and transient effects can be evaluated. If atmospheric pressure change is local (of a standing wave nature), sea surface response increases with increasing subinertial frequency. If pressure changes are advective, sea surface response decreases with increasing speed. Overreaction of the free surface to forcing, causing overshoot, can occur when the free inertia-gravity modes of the basin are excited. Laboratory experiments are performed which agree with the theory of the local pressure change mechanism to within assinged experimental error.The study is extended to consider the response of an equivalent β-plane system in a more laboratory-oriented approach. It is found that the β-effect is important in the entire range of frequencies studied in the laboratory, with the response approaching that of an f-plane ocean at higher frequencies. The excitation of free planetary modes of the basin proves to be important in the barometric response, allowing for local oversoot and undershoot and for the generation of a substantial pressure signal at a distance from the driving, allowing a significant contribution to the incoherent bottom signal to be forced by distant atmospheric pressure disturbances in the ocean basin.  相似文献

A new approach to investigations of the structure of the boundary layer above waves is discussed. The approach is based on direct numerical simulation of wave motions in the boundary layer produced by a moving curved surface. Model equations are derived, which are the Reynolds equations in a curvilinear nonstationary system of co-ordinates, evolution equations for turbulent kinetic energy, and Kolmogorov's approximate similarity formulae relating the coefficient of turbulent viscosity to the dissipation of turbulent energy; the length scale is assumed to grow linearly with increasing distance from the surface. Principles of constructing the model numerical scheme are described. Results are given of modelling the structure of the boundary layer above a nonsteady surface, which, in a general case, is a superposition of progressive waves with assigned dispersion relations and amplitudes. Mechanisms of energy and momentum transfer to the surface, effects of density stratification and energy structure in the boundary layer are studied. Merits and demerits of the approach are discussed.  相似文献

The linearized, two-dimensional flow of an incompressible fully turbulent fluid over a sinusoidal boundary is solved using the method of matched asymptotic expansions in the limit of vanishing skin-friction.A phenomenological turbulence model due to Saffman (1970, 1974) is utilized to incorporate the effects of the wavy boundary on the turbulence structure.Arbitrary lowest-order wave speed is allowed in order to consider both the stationary wavy wall, and the water wave moving with arbitrary positive or negative velocity.Good agreement is found with measured tangential velocity profiles and surface normal stress coefficients. The phase shift of the surface normal stress exhibits correct qualitative behavior with both positive and negative wave speeds, although predicted values are low.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Auf Grund von mehrjährigen Messungen mit einem Kugelpyranometer wird über das Verhalten der Zirkumglobalstrahlung, also der von Sonne, Himmel und Bodenreflex auf einen kugelförmigen Empfänger auffallenden Strahlung, am Alpensüdfuß berichtet und ihr Zusammenhang mit der Sonnenscheindauer einerseits und der Globalstrahlung, die auf eine horizontale Fläche bzw. einen Würfel fällt, andererseits untersucht. Dabei zeigt es sich, daß diese Beziehungen dazu verwendet werden können, um von einer kurzen Beobachtungsperiode auf eine längere zu reduzieren, und daß sich aus den Angaben eines Kugelpyranometers zuverlässige Schlüsse auf den Strahlungsgenuß eines Würfels (also z. B. eines Gebäudes) ziehen lassen.
Summary The present paper deals with the measurements of circumglobal radiation, i. e. the total radiation incoming from sun, sky and ground reflection on a spherical pyranometer, which have been carried out for several years at the southern slope of the Alps. The investigation shows that there is a strict relation between the circumglobal radiation and the duration of sunshine on the one hand and the global radiation, falling either on a horizontal surface or a cube on the other. This relation can be used for the reduction from a short period of observations to a longer one, and it is possible to draw from measurements with a spherical pyranometer reliable conclusions on the radiation economy of a cube, as e. g. a building.

Résumé En se basant sur plusieurs années de mesures avec un pyranomètre sphérique, on discute les conditions du rayonnement circumglobal, c'est-à-dire du rayonnement du soleil, du ciel et de la réflexion au sol qui tombe sur un récepteur sphérique, au versant sud des Alpes. Ces recherches montrent les relations étroites qui existent entre la radiation circumglobale et la durée d'insolation d'une part et la radiation globale, tombant sur une surface horizontale, respectivement sur un cube, d'autre part. On constate que l'on peut utiliser ces relations pour réduire d'une courte période d'observations à une longue période; on reconnaît, d'autre part, qu'il est possible de tirer des conclusions importantes sur l'économie de rayonnement d'un cube, comme p. e. un bâtiment, à partir de mesures avec un pyranomètre sphérique.

The effects of vertical eddy viscosity on simple mesoscale waves in the ocean are studied. The decay of Rossby waves is investigated by one-dimensional depth-dependent linear stability problems which are derived for the interior non-viscous or viscous quasigeostrophic flow using parameterizations of the top and bottom boundary layers corresponding to Ekman suction, no-stress and bottom-stress boundary conditions.The non-slip condition at the bottom yielding an O(Ev1/2)-Ekman layer causes very short damping times for the 0th Rossby mode. This suggests that this boundary condition is not suitable for mesoscale wave studies, because a Rossby wave fit for the MODE eddy can be done satisfactorily without any damping. Reasonable results for damping times of Rossby waves are obtained by prescribing the bottom stress, resulting from the constant-stress layer at the bottom, and the free-slip condition at the surface. The growth rates of Eady waves are reexamined using this bottom-stress condition.Vertical viscosity in the interior of the ocean, e.g. internal wave induced viscosity, may have a significant influence on the dynamics of the mesoscale motions, comparable to that of the boundary layers in some cases. The results are compatible with the sparse observations available.  相似文献

An investigation is made of the mechanics of amplitude vacillation in a numerically simulated rotating annulus flow system. Amplitude vacillation is characterized by a periodic change of vertical wave structure in concert with growth and decay of wave amplitude and phase speed. The temperature wave amplitude profile for the dominant component consists of three local maxima: (1) lower boundary layer, (2) upper half layer and (3) lower half layer. The lower layer waves lead the time-dependent structural variation during vacillation. Two types of amplitude vacillation found in the experimental measurements (Buzyna et al., 1989: J. Atmos. Sci. 46, 2716–2729) can be distinguished in the temperature wave by whether the lower layer waves split from and travel behind the upper layer waves by one wave period in each cycle of vacillation. Linear eigenvalue analyses with respect to the instantaneous axisymmetric state at various points in time are performed to elucidate the simple interaction between the dominant wave and the zonal mean state. During the vacillation cycle, the zonal mean state is modified by the wave, which causes a change in growth rate and vertical structure of the linearly most unstable eigenmode. This, in turn, forces the actual changes of the nonlinear solutions.  相似文献

Results of measurements carried out in the Caspian Sea in 1975 and 1976 have been used to study the thickness of the molecular temperature boundary layer and the difference of temperature in this layer as functions of hydrometeorological parameters. This thickness of the molecular temperature boundary layer was found to be dependent on both the friction velocity and wave phase. The same is also true for the temperature difference. On the other hand, it was not possible to observe a definite dependence upon the roughness of the surface of the sea and the stability.  相似文献

In the framework of the equivalent barotropic dynamics, we show that the kinetic energy and enstrophy a small scale perturbation superimposed on a large scale solitary wave do not grow in time as long as the perturbation scale remains much less than that of the wave. This property is proved to hold for the equivalent modons of Flierl et al. which therefore turn out to be resistant to small scale perturbations. These conclusions appear to explain the numerical results of McWilliams et al. on non divergent modons.  相似文献

A slab model of the boundary layer was used to study the dynamics of the internal boundary layer associated with changes in surface temperature. The usual numerical procedure involving finite differences was avoided by solving the governing equations in a Lagrangian framework. The results of the modelling study showed that mixed-layer growth was enhanced by: (a) an increase in surface roughness; (b) an increase in the surface temperature change; and (c) a decrease in the horizontal velocity. It was found that the vertical velocity induced by variations in the horizontal velocity could play an important role in controlling the expansion of the mixed layer.The second part of the study involved the formulation of a model by simplifying the governing equations. The analytical solution obtained from the model compared favourably with the results of the numerical model. Furthermore, the analytical expression for the mixed-layer height was virtually identical to that presented by Raynor et al. (1974) to fit their observational data.  相似文献

Wave-Modified Flux and Plume Dispersion in the Stable Boundary Layer   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
The effects of a pressure jump and a following internal gravity wave on turbulence and plume diffusion in the stable planetary boundary layer are examined. The pressure jump was accompanied by a sudden increase in turbulence and plume dispersion. The effects of wave perturbations on turbulence statistics are analysed by calculating fluxes and variances with and without the wave signal for averaging times ranging from 1 to 30 min. The wave signals are obtained using a band-pass filter. It is shown that second-order turbulence quantities calculated without first subtracting the wave perturbations from the time are greater than those calculated when the wave signal is separated from the turbulence. Estimates of the vertical dispersion of an elevated tracer plume in the stable boundary layer are made using an elastic backscatter lidar. Plume dispersion observed 25 m downwind of the source increases rapidly with the arrival of the flow disturbances. Measured plume dispersion and plume centreline height correlate with the standard deviation of the vertical velocity but not with the wave signal.  相似文献
