Fine sediment resuspension dynamics in a large semi-enclosed bay   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

A field study was conducted to investigate fine sediment resuspension dynamics in Moreton Bay, a large semi-enclosed bay situated in South East Queensland, Australia. One S4ADW current meter and three OBS sensors were used to collect the field data on tides, mean currents, waves and suspended sediment concentrations in a mean water depth of 6.1 m for about 3 weeks. Two small cleaning units were specially designed to automatically clean the OBS sensors several times every hour to avoid biological growth on the OBS sensors. Based on the collected field data, the main driving force for fine sediment resuspension is found to be the storm wind-waves generated locally in the Bay, not the tidal current or penetrated ocean swell. The critical wind-wave orbital velocity for sediment resuspension was determined to be Urms=7 cm/s and the critical bed shear stress τcr=0.083–0.095 Pa at this study site.  相似文献

Analysis of suspended-sediment concentration data in San Francisco Bay is complicated by spatial and temporal variability. In situ optical backscatterance sensors provide continuous suspended-sediment concentration data, but inaccessibility, vandalism, and cost limit the number of potential monitoring stations. Satellite imagery reveals the spatial distribution of surficial-suspended sediment concentrations in the Bay; however, temporal resolution is poor. Analysis of thein situ sensor data in conjunction with the satellite reflectance data shows the effects of physical processes on both the spatial and temporal distribution of suspended sediment in San Francisco Bay. Plumes can be created by large freshwater flows. Zones of high suspended-sediment concentrations in shallow subembayments are associated with wind-wave resuspension and the spring-neap cycle. A series of transient tests were conducted to determine the seafloor coupling characteristics of a new ocean-bottom seismometer (OBS) developed for the United States Office of Naval Research (ONR). The OBS comprises a large recording package and a separate sensor package that is deployed from the recording package. In addition to the coupling characteristics of both the sensor and the recording packages, the seismic energy radiated from the main recording package as a result of motion of the recording package was measured. The observed vertical coupling resonances of both the recording package and the sensor package are in good agreement with those predicted by a simple model of soil-structure interaction. The most important result of this study is that significant energy is radiated from the recording package in response to horizontal motions of the recording package. When the sensor package is 1 m from the recording package, the amplitude of the recorded signal is similar to that recorded in the recording package. In the field, this effect will result in distortion of seismic signals and increased background noise recorded by the sensor package if the recording package is disturbed by seafloor currents or biological activity. The amplitude of this signal attenuates by approximately a factor of two as sensor/recorder separation is increased from 1 to 6 m, suggesting that an improved response can be achieved by increasing the separation between the recording package and the sensors. A comprehensive field study has been undertaken to investigate sediment resuspension dynamics in the Moreton Bay, a large semi-enclosed bay situated in South East Queensland, Australia. An instrumented tripod, which housed three current meters, three OBS sensors and one underwater video camera, was used to collect the field data on tides, currents, waves and suspended sediment concentrations at four sites (Sites 1, 2, 4, and 5) in the bay. Site 1 was located at the main entrance, Site 2 at the central bay in deep water, and Sites 4 and 5 at two small bays in shallow water. The bed sediment was fine sand (d50=0.2 mm) at Site 1, and cohesive sediment at the other three sites. Based on the collected field data, it is found that the dominant driving forces for sediment resuspension are a combination of ocean swell and tidal currents at Site 1, tidal currents at Site 2, and wind-waves at Sites 4 and 5. The critical bed shear stress for cohesive sediment resuspension is determined as 0.079 Pa in unidirectional flow at Site 2, and 0.076 Pa in wave-induced oscillatory flow at Site 5.  相似文献

Brief and impulsive signals of uncertain origin appear regularly on records from Ocean Bottom Seismographs (OBS) of several institutions. These signals have been recorded on nearly all deployments of the Texas OBS, including sites at depths greater than 7000 m. At some sites, they account for over 90% of the events recorded. They are of short duration (usually 0.5–4.0 s) and have a characteristic frequency (usually in the range of 4–18 Hz) that differs from site to site. When networks of OBS instruments are deployed, the signals are not recorded simultaneously by different instruments. Neither the frequency content nor the distribution of durations of these signals is similar to what is observed for known earthquake events.We present evidence suggesting that the signals are of biological origin, perhaps caused by animals touching the OBS units. (1) The distribution of these signals on instruments deployed at depths shallower than 1000 m shows a 24 h periodicity, while there is a 24 h periodic pattern on instruments deployed at sites deeper than 1000 m (where there is no visible light). (2) The frequency of occurrence of signals is similar to the vertical distribution of biomass in the oceans, i.e., they appear most frequently on OBS instruments deployed at very shallow depths. In most of the Ocean Bottom Seisometers (OBS) used today, the sensors, electronics, recorders, flotation, and ballast are contained in one rigid package. Usually this configuration requires a large mass, a large vertical cross section in the water, and relatively small bearing surface area in contact with the bottom, resulting in poor seismic characteristics and increased noise sensitivity. An OBS recently developed at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics (HIG) minimizes these problems by physically separating the sensor from the main OBS package. Direct comparison between signals recorded by a standard HIG configuration Pop-up Ocean Bottom Seismometer (POBS) and signals from the new Isolated Sensor Ocean Bottom Seismometer (ISOBS), deployed near each other in deep water, clearly demonstrates the advantages of the isolated sensor configuration. Although the ISOBS is superior to older OBS designs, recent testing suggests that further improvements can be made.  相似文献

We examined short-term phytoplankton and sediment dynamics in Tampa Bay with data collected between 8 December 2004 and 17 January 2005 from optical, oceanographic, and meteorological sensors mounted on a coastal oceanographic tower and from satellite remote sensing. Baseline phytoplankton (chlorophyll-a, Chl) and sediment concentrations (particle backscattering coefficient at 532 nm, bbp(532)) were of the order of 3.7 mg m−3 and 0.07 m−1, respectively, during the study period. Both showed large fluctuations dominated by semidiurnal and diurnal frequencies associated with tidal forcing. Three strong wind events (hourly averaged wind speed >8.0 m s−1) generated critical bottom shear stress of >0.2 Pa and suspended bottom sediments that were clearly observed in concurrent MODIS satellite imagery. In addition, strong tidal current or swells could also suspend sediments in the lower Bay. Sediments remained suspended in the water column for 2–3 days after the wind events. Moderate Chl increases were observed after sediment resuspension with a lag time of ˜1–2 days, probably due to release of bottom nutrients and optimal light conditions associated with sediment resuspension and settling. Two large increases in Chl with one Chl > 12.0 mg m−3 over ˜2 days, were observed at neap tides. For the study site and period, because of the high temporal variability in phytoplankton and sediment concentrations, a monthly snapshot can be different by −50% to 200% from the monthly “mean” chlorophyll and sediment conditions. The combination of high-frequency observations from automated sensors and synoptic satellite imagery, when available, is an excellent complement to limited field surveys to study and monitor water quality parameters in estuarine environments.  相似文献

The Bay of Banten, West Java, Indonesia represents a shallow coastal embayment harboring coral reefs subject to extremely turbid conditions. The sedimentary regime and flow structure of two contrasting coral reef islands in the embayment were investigated to identify the mechanisms responsible for mean and peak levels of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) around the reefs. Arrays of in situ calibrated optical backscatter (OBS) sensors were deployed across the reef slopes. Far field conditions were simultaneously monitored using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and a conductivity temperature and depth (CTD) probe, equipped with an OBS sensor. In addition, hydrographic surveys were conducted using the ADCP attached to a small fishing boat, navigating transects perpendicular to the reef islands. The direct influence of river plumes was found to be insignificant. Waves act only in the uppermost few meters of the reef slopes, where coral growth is most abundant and little sediment is available for resuspension. Tidal currents are the primary cause of high turbidity, which was inferred from peaks in the diurnal and semidiurnal frequency bands of SSC spectra, and the large depths where the turbidity variation sometimes initiates. The entrained sediment disperses upward across the reef slopes, which is likely due to a secondary current associated with bending of the flow along the curved, hydraulically rough reef slopes, in weakly stratified ambient waters. Changes in sediment availability, variable critical shear stresses for erosion and deposition, and the formation and evanescence of island wakes may explain the high variability of SSC at the reef slopes.  相似文献

应用锚式悬挂沉积物捕捉器法,研究了我国北方重要海水养殖区域桑沟湾悬浮颗粒物沉降通量的分布特征,并通过金属Al标记法,同步测定了沉降颗粒物再悬浮比率。结果表明,桑沟湾的底层悬浮颗粒物(SPM)、颗粒有机碳(POC)、颗粒态总氮(PTN)和颗粒态总磷(PTP)平均表观沉降通量分别为1 511.4g/(m2·d)、20.01g/(m2·d)、1.497g/(m2·d)和0.474g/(m2·d),显著高于我国其他近岸海域,但底层沉降颗粒物再悬浮比率平均值高达92.8%,认为在养殖内湾,受再悬浮程度的影响,测得的底层表观沉降通量是中层的2.7倍,秋季明显大于夏季,海带和扇贝养殖区大于牡蛎养殖区。经再悬浮比率校正后的净沉降通量,仍存在着显著的空间和季节变化,但受控因素发生了根本转变;这主要表现为净沉降颗粒物质主要源于生物代谢活动强烈中上层水体,贝类的排泄作用使牡蛎和扇贝养殖区的净沉降通量显著大于海带养殖区,养殖贝类个体增大、排泄量增加使秋季净沉降通量高于夏季。在我国近岸海域,再悬浮作用的影响,会对该区域悬浮颗粒物沉降通量的估算带来巨大误差,因此该作用不容忽视。  相似文献

We describe a recent modification to the MIT Ocean Bottom Seismometer by which the geophones are housed in a separate package that is deployed on the sea floor about 1 m distance from the main unit several hours after the OBS reaches the ocean bottom. Records from deep-sea experiments and shallow-water tests show two improvements over records from geophones housed in the main instrument package. Signals recorded by the external geophones have a much better signal-to-noise ratio because tape recorder noise and instrument vibrations generated by water currents are effectively eliminated. As a result, the overall frequency response of the sensors to ground motion has a demonstrably smoother spectral shape. The second improvement is that the cross coupling of horizontal instrument motion to vertical ground motion is apparently greatly reduced because of the simpler design for the sensor package.  相似文献

为了更有效地将卫星数据应用于北极航行导航,被动微波(PM)产品的海冰密集度(SIC)与从中国北极科学考察中收集到的船基目视观测(OBS)资料进行了比较。在2010、2012、2014、2016和2018年的北极夏季总共收集了3667组目测数据。PM SIC取自基于SSMIS传感器的NASA-Team(NT)、Bootstrap(BT)以及Climate Data Record(CDR)算法和基于AMSR-E/AMSR-2传感器的BT、enhanced NT(NT2)以及ARTIST Sea Ice(ASI)算法。使用PM SIC的日算术平均值和OBS SIC的日加权平均值进行比较。比较了PM SIC和OBS SIC之间的相关系数,偏差和均方根偏差,包括总体趋势以及在轻度/普通/严重冰况下的情况。使用OBS数据,浮冰尺寸和冰厚对不同PM产品SIC反演的影响可以通过计算浮冰尺寸编码和冰厚的日加权平均值来评估。我们的结果显示相关系数的范围为0.89(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2)到0.95(SSMIS NT),偏差的范围为-3.96%(SSMIS NT)到12.05%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2),均方根偏差的范围为10.81%(SSMIS NT)到20.15%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2)。浮冰尺寸对PM产品的SIC反演有显著的影响,大多数PM产品倾向于在小浮冰尺寸情况下低估SIC,而在大浮冰尺寸情况下高估SIC。超过30 cm的冰厚对于PM产品的SIC反演没有明显影响。总体来看,在北极夏季,SSMIS NT SIC与OBS SIC之间有着最好的一致性,而AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2 SIC与OBS SIC的一致性最差。  相似文献

Sources of very low frequency (0.01 to 1.0 Hz) ambient seismic noise in the shallow (<100 m) water continental margin sediments are investigated using Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS). The predominant seismic motions are found to be due to surface gravity (water) waves and water-sediment interface waves. Actual experimental measurements of seabed acceleration and hydrodynamic pressure are given, including side by side comparisons between buried and plate-mounted OBS units. OBS-sediment resonant effects are found to be negligible at the low frequencies under investigation. Wherever there exists relative motion between the seabed and the water, however, an exposed OBS is subject to added mass forces that cause it to move with the water rather than the sediments. Calculations based on measured seabed motions show that a neutral density, buried seismometer has superior sediment coupling charactersitics to any exposed OBS design.  相似文献

With ever increasing information being collected by the offshore continental shelf tide gauges, it became inevitable that researches into ocean tides would require instrumentation to collect tidal data in the deep oceans.This paper briefly describes the temperature and pressure sensors developed, and used by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Wormley), in response to this requirement. Also described are the techniques and equipment used to calibrate these sensors.The deep sea tide gauges, each of which include two pressure and one temperature sensor, have now been operationally deployed on four occasions at pressures up to 300 bars (3000 m) providing well over 100 days of tidal data. In an international exercise to evaluate the performance of existing deep sea pressure sensors, results show that the unit described in this paper compares favourably with the other sensors. For example, the amplitude of the semi-diurnal components were within 1% of the average value, determined by all the sensors. The temperature sensor has an operational range within the limits — 1° and + 40°C and exhibiting a stability of the order 8 milli°C/month.  相似文献

本文利用高分辨率数值模型,以2001年秋季为例,详细分析了影响坦帕湾水交换的三种因素:潮汐、河流和风。论文共设置了三组实验,驱动力分别为潮汐,潮汐和河流,潮汐、河流和风。模拟结果显示:只有潮汐作用时,由于坦帕湾潮汐较弱,潮程较短,坦帕湾与其临近海域的水交换主要发生在湾口附近;当潮汐和河流共同作用时,由于河流和湾口海水盐度的不同形成了水平密度梯度,在其产生的水平密度梯度力的作用下,坦帕湾形成了表层流向湾外、底层流向湾内的重力环流,从而加强了坦帕湾跟其临近海域的水交换;由湾内指向湾外方向(2001年秋季平均)的风应力加强了流向湾外的表层流,同时水位梯度力发生了反转,变成了由湾口指向湾顶,这加强了流向湾内的底层流,表层流和底层流的加强最终促进了坦帕湾跟其临近海域的水交换;在航道处,水深较深瑞利数较大,该处的重力环流较强,这使得相对于两侧的浅水区,航道处的水交换能力较强。此外,文章还分析了坦帕湾水交换的空间差异,在Old Tampa Bay的西侧和北侧,滞留时间最长,水交换能力最弱。为减少海洋生态灾害发生,今后应重点加强对该地区的生态环境保护。  相似文献

在海底布设的海底地震仪(OBS)能比较清晰地记录到海底的环境噪音,而台风可以直接或间接的产生在海底传播的弹性波,从而影响海底的环境噪音,并在较大程度上影响OBS的数据记录。本文通过分析台风对工作区的整个影响过程中OBS记录数据的振幅变化,再选择合适的滤波方式,首次发现台风产生的风浪及涌浪在短周期海底地震仪的记录数据上有良好的表现特征,指出了台风对海底环境噪音的另一种可能的影响方式,并由此得出:1)台风产生的风浪和涌浪对海底环境噪音的影响模式不同;2)风浪和涌浪所加强的海底环境噪音的范围和程度不同;3)短周期OBS可以比较清晰的记录涌浪信息,其周期主要是6—8 s,且能量稳定(简称“8秒现象”)。这三点结论为后期的海洋地震研究和海洋学其他研究提供经验与借鉴。  相似文献

In order to apply satellite data to guiding navigation in the Arctic more effectively, the sea ice concentrations(SIC)derived from passive microwave(PM) products were compared with ship-based visual observations(OBS)collected during the Chinese National Arctic Research Expeditions(CHINARE). A total of 3 667 observations were collected in the Arctic summers of 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. PM SIC were derived from the NASA-Team(NT), Bootstrap(BT) and Climate Data Record(CDR) algorithms based on the SSMIS sensor, as well as the BT,enhanced NASA-Team(NT2) and ARTIST Sea Ice(ASI) algorithms based on AMSR-E/AMSR-2 sensors. The daily arithmetic average of PM SIC values and the daily weighted average of OBS SIC values were used for the comparisons. The correlation coefficients(CC), biases and root mean square deviations(RMSD) between PM SIC and OBS SIC were compared in terms of the overall trend, and under mild/normal/severe ice conditions. Using the OBS data, the influences of floe size and ice thickness on the SIC retrieval of different PM products were evaluated by calculating the daily weighted average of floe size code and ice thickness. Our results show that CC values range from 0.89(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2) to 0.95(SSMIS NT), biases range from-3.96%(SSMIS NT) to 12.05%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2), and RMSD values range from 10.81%(SSMIS NT) to 20.15%(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2). Floe size has a significant influence on the SIC retrievals of the PM products, and most of the PM products tend to underestimate SIC under smaller floe size conditions and overestimate SIC under larger floe size conditions. Ice thickness thicker than 30 cm does not have a significant influence on the SIC retrieval of PM products. Overall, the best(worst) agreement occurs between OBS SIC and SSMIS NT(AMSR-E/AMSR-2 NT2) SIC in the Arctic summer.  相似文献

于1986年11月-1987年9月对福建罗源湾海水悬浮的含量的观测结果表明,水动力条件引起的再悬浮过程和生物活分别是罗源湾冬季和夏季悬浮物分布及性质变化的主要影响因素。底部沉积物的再悬浮对水体营养盐的再生和补充及有机碎屑的提供起重要的作用,夏季颗粒有机碳的学降能量一般占水柱浮游植物初级生产量的67-85%,大部分初级生产的有机碳沉降海底。  相似文献

A permanent real-time geophysical observatory using a submarine cable was developed and deployed to monitor seismicity, tsunamis, and other geophysical phenomena in the southern Kurile subduction zone. The geophysical observatory comprises six bottom sensor units, two branching units, a main electro-optical cable with a length of 240 km and two land stations. The bottom sensor units are: 1) three ocean bottom broadband seismometers with hydrophone; 2) two pressure gauges (PGs); 3) a cable end station with environmental measurement sensors. Real-time data from all the undersea sensors are transmitted through the main electro-optical cable to the land station. The geophysical observatory was installed on the continental slope of the southern Kurile trench, southeast Hokkaido, Japan in July 1999. Examples of observed data are presented. Sensor noises and resolution are mentioned for the ocean bottom broadband seismometers and the PGs, respectively. An adaptable observation system including very broadband seismometers is scheduled to be connected to the branching unit in late 2001. The real-time geophysical observatory is expected to greatly advance the understanding of geophysical phenomena in the southern Kurile subduction zone  相似文献

Phosphorus dynamics in Tokyo Bay waters were investigated along with other oceanographic variables. Seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and particulate phosphorus (PP) are inversely correlated with each other, and reflect variation in biological activity. A high concentration of PP in summer surface waters is caused by high primary production. The PP settled in the deeper layer is decomposed, and orthophosphate is regenerated within the water column and in sediments. Even during summer stratification period, the regenerated orthophosphate is occasionally advected upward by wind-induced water mixing and contributes to phytoplankton growth in the upper layer. Some dissolved organic phosphorus is producedin situ from PP, but it may be rapidly decomposed in the water column. The ratios of Cchlorophylla and CN in particulate matter suggest that phytoplankton in the summer surface waters of Tokyo Bay are limited neither by nitrogen nor by phosphorus. The PN ratio in particulate matter varies substantially but it is positively correlated with the ambient concentration of DIP. Phytoplankton take up and store phosphorus within their cells when ambient DIP exceeds their demand. An abundance of total phosphorus in the summer water column can be attributed to increased discharge of river waters, although enhanced release of orthophosphate from anoxic sediments cannot be discounted.  相似文献

A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the appropriateness of cross-flow ultrafiltration (CFUF) techniques for the determination of the phase speciation of monomethyl mercury (MeHg) in natural waters. Spiral-wound cartridge (Amicon S1Y1) and Miniplate (Amicon) were evaluated for their nominal molecular weight cut-offs of 1 and 10 kDa, respectively. The ultrafiltration behavior of standard macromolecules showed that the permeation of high molecular weight (HMW) organic macromolecules was not significant when a concentration factor (CF)>15 was used. The retention of low molecular weight (LMW) molecules was significant, especially at a low CF<5, suggesting that the use of a high CF (15) will minimize the retention of LMW molecules. Sorptive losses of MeHg in the solution phase to the 1 kDa membrane were negligible, but MeHg bound to HMW macromolecules was still retained (20%), even with a preconditioned membrane. The mass balance recovery of MeHg during ultrafiltration averaged 101±15% (n=7) and 105±14% (n=5) for the 1 and 10 kDa membranes, respectively. Sample storage over 24 h caused significant coagulation (47%) of the <10 kDa MeHg into the 10 kDa–0.45 μm colloidal or the particulate MeHg pool. The 1 kDa–0.45 μm colloidal MeHg in Galveston Bay and the Trinity River water samples accounted for 40–48% of the filter-passing MeHg, although the most abundant fraction (52–60%) of MeHg was the truly dissolved fraction (<1 kDa). The partition coefficient between the colloidal (1 kDa–0.45 μm) and truly dissolved MeHg (average log KC=5.2) was higher than the partition coefficient based on particle/filter-passing (average log KD=4.6) or particle/truly dissolved MeHg (average log KP=4.8), suggesting that MeHg has stronger affinity for natural colloids than macroparticulate materials (>0.45 μm).  相似文献
