Many subtidal predators undertake regular tidal migrations into intertidal areas in order to access abundant prey. One of the most productive habitats in soft bottom intertidal systems is formed by beds of epibenthic bivalves such as blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). In the Dutch Wadden Sea, these bivalves might face substantial predation pressure by the shore crab (Carcinus maenas), which increased considerably in numbers during the last 20 years. However, the quantification of this species on bivalve beds is challenging, since most methods common for quantifying animal abundance in marine habitats cannot be used. This study investigated the potential of two methods to quantify the abundance of C. maenas on 14 epibenthic bivalve beds across the Dutch Wadden Sea. The use of the number of crabs migrating from subtidal towards intertidal areas as a proxy of abundance on bivalve beds yielded unreliable results. In contrast, crabs caught with traps on the beds were correlated with the abundance assessed on the surrounding bare flats by beam trawl and therefore provided usable results. The estimates, however, were only reliable for crabs exceeding 35 mm in carapace width (CW). The application of these estimates indicated that crab abundances on bivalve beds were influenced by the biogenic structure. Beds dominated by oysters attracted many large crabs (> 50-mm CW), whereas abundances of medium-sized crabs (35–50-mm CW) showed no relationship to the oyster occurrence. The combination of traps and trawls is capable of quantifying crab abundance on bivalve beds, which offers the possibility to study biotic processes such as predator-prey interactions in these complex structures in more detail.  相似文献

Soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria) can serve important ecological roles in intertidal mudflats and are an important economic and recreational resource in the northwestern Atlantic. However, environmental factors affecting newly-settled and juvenile clam abundances within a given settlement season remain uncertain. We conducted a field study assessing relationships between juvenile soft-shell clam abundance and spatial, temporal, and environmental variables in coastal mudflats of the northern shore of the Bay of Fundy. Sediment pH and low-tide water temperature (tide pools) were monitored in situ on a biweekly–monthly basis over the course of the M. arenaria settlement season in 2012 at four study sites to quantify diel variation in sediment pH and temperature. Core samples were also collected to quantify M. arenaria (<6 mm) abundance. Sea-surface and air temperature, and in situ sediment pH and water temperature were then used to predict clam abundance. Sediment pH was spatially and temporally variable, while in situ temperature was stable and declined over the sampling season. Akaike’s information criterion model selection indicated that models incorporating site, date, and air temperature best predicted 2012 recruitment patterns in linear models when all variables were included. When only environmental variables were included, the best linear model included minimum air temperature and sediment pH. When data were averaged across dates for each site to remove potential temporal effects, mean clam abundance displayed a significant positive relationship with sediment pH and sediment grain size, but not minimum air temperature. The results of this study suggest that sediment pH and/or sediment grain size may influence within-season juvenile soft-shell clam abundances across mudflats in the Bay of Fundy. Field experiments at the same (or similar) sites are now needed to confirm the mechanism driving the observed relationships.  相似文献

To meet demands of expanding tribal and recreational hardshell clam fisheries, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife has been developing new hardshell clam habitat. In Oakland Bay, near Shelton, Washington, two artificial substrates were studied to determine the best substrate for use in improving Manila clam (Tapes philippinarum) production. Treatments consisted of a control of natural substrate; a 10 cm layer of nonuniform size gravel ranging from 6 mm to 19 mm in diameter; and a 10 cm layer of a 50∶50 mixture of gravel and crushed oyster shell ranging from 10 mm to 30 mm in diameter. Effects of these substrates on species diversity and relative abundance of existing, benthic organisms were also investigated. Recruitment of Manila clam seed, less than 10 mm shell length, was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the control plots than in the gravel and gravel + shell plots, which showed no significant differences. Recruitment improved in the gravel and gravel + shell plots after a layer of organic debris and fine sediments collected on them. Manila clam survival was significantly higher in gravel and gravel + shell plots compared to control plots. No significant differences in survival were observed between gravel and gravel + shell plots. Manila clam biomass in the gravel and gravel + shell plots was significantly higher than in control plots. Between the gravel and gravel + shell plots there was no significant difference in biomass. Minor differences in species diversity and abundance of existing benthic organisms were observed among treatments. Gammarid amphipods and nemertean worms were enhanced in gravel and gravel + shell plots. Densities of polychaete worms were slightly lower in gravel and gravel + shell plots compared to control plots.  相似文献

In coastal ecosystems, suspension-feeding bivalves can remove nitrogen though uptake and assimilation or enhanced denitrification. Bivalves may also retain nitrogen through increased mineralization and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This study investigated the effects of oyster reefs and clam aquaculture on denitrification, DNRA, and nutrient fluxes (NO x , NH4 +, O2). Core incubations were conducted seasonally on sediments adjacent to restored oyster reefs (Crassostrea virginica), clam aquaculture beds (Mercenaria mercenaria) which contained live clams, and bare sediments from Smith Island Bay, Virginia, USA. Denitrification was significantly higher at oyster reef sediments and clam aquaculture site than bare sediment in the summer; however, DNRA was not enhanced. The clam aquaculture site had the highest ammonium production due to clam excretion. While oyster reef and bare sediments exhibited seasonal differences in rate processes, there was no effect of season on denitrification, or dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) or ammonium flux at the clam aquaculture site. This suggests that farm management practices or bivalve metabolism and excretion may override seasonal differences. When water column nitrate concentration was elevated, denitrification increased in clam aquaculture site and oyster reef sediments but not in bare sediment; DNRA was only stimulated at the clam aquaculture site. This, along with a significant and positive relationship between denitrification and sediment organic matter, suggests that labile carbon limited nitrate reduction at the bare sediment site. Bivalve systems can serve as either net sinks or sources of nitrogen to coastal ecosystems, depending mainly on the type of bivalve, location, and management practices.  相似文献

Samples were collected from September 1990 to February 1992, at three subtidal sites of the middle reaches of the Queule River estuary, southern Chile, to analyze the spatial and temporal variability of the macroinfauna inhabiting substrata with different abundances of bivalves. In addition, water and sediment samples were obtained to study the relationships between the temporal variability in macroinfaunal abundances, physical factors and chlorophylla content. Temperature, salinity, and chlorophylla showed a rather strong seasonal variability but slight between-site differences. Sediment characteristics and bivalve abundances, by contrast, exhibited little temporal variability but large differences between sites. The macroinfauna was primarily represented by polychaetesPrionospio (Minuspio) patagonica being dominant in the three areas. Most dominant species showed similar trends of temporal variability, with maximum abundances recorded during spring and fall. The appearance of recruits was restricted to the summer with little difference among sites. Multiple regression analyses showed that the temporal variability of macroinfaunal adults and recruits, was primarily associated with variability in salinity and water temperature, respectively. Spatial variability of these organisms was also explained by variations in these factors, together with those of sediment texture and organic matter content. No evidence of interactions (significant relationships) was found between the abundances of bivalves and those of the macroinfauna, nor among macroinfaunal organisms.  相似文献

Crabs (Grapsidae,Sesarma) are the dominant macrofaunal group of mangrove forest soils in northern Australia. Little is known about the ecology of these crabs or the factors that influence their distribution in mangrove forests. Pitfall traps were used to sample grapsid crabs in the Murray River estuary in north Queensland. Sampling was conducted at five sites along a salinity gradient from <1‰ at upstream sites to >35‰ at the river mouth. At each site, trapping was done in both low and high intertidal forests. We characterized the sediments at each site by measuring percent sand, silt, clay and organic matter, Eh, pH, and soil pore-water salinity. Four species of grapsids dominated the crab fauna along the Murray River (Sesarma semperi-longicristatum, S. messa, S. brevicristatum, andS. brevipes). Distinct zonation patterns were found along the salinity gradient and between high and low intertidal forests.S. messa was dominant in high intertidal, downstream forests, high and low intertidal forests in the middle to downstream portion of the river, and in low intertidal forests in the central reach of the river.S. brevipes was dominant in both low and high intertidal zone forests at low salinity upstream sites.S. brevicristatum was most abundant in the central reaches of the river and only in the high intertidal zone.S. semperi-longicristatum was found only in the low intertidal zone, downstream forest. Subsequently, tests of salinity tolerances of these crabs were carried out in the laboratory. These indicated very wide tolerances over salinities from completely fresh to hypersaline (60‰). The osmoregulatory abilities of the crabs were also found to vary. However, neither their salinity tolerance nor osmoregulatory ability adequately explain the zonation patterns were measured in the field. For example,S. brevicristatum had the most restricted distribution, but it had the second broadest salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory ability. Sediment characteristics explained a significant amount of the variation in abundance for two of the crab species. Pore-water salinity provided no explanatory power for any of the species. Individual species abundances are probably influenced by additional factors such as interspecific competition and predation.  相似文献

Increased interest in using bivalve cultivation to mitigate eutrophication requires a comprehensive understanding of the net carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) budgets associated with cultivation on an ecosystem scale. This study quantified C and N processes related to clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) aquaculture in a shallow coastal environment (Cherrystone Inlet, VA) where the industry has rapidly increased. Clam physiological rates were compared with basin-wide ecosystem fluxes including primary production, benthic nutrient regeneration, and respiration. Although clam beds occupy only 3 % of the ecosystem’s surface area, clams filtered 7–44 % of the system’s volume daily, consumed an annual average of 103 % of the phytoplankton production, creating a large flux of particulate C and N to the sediments. Annually, N regenerated and C respired by clam and microbial metabolism in clam beds were ~3- and ~1.5-fold higher, respectively, than N and C removed through harvest. Due to the short water residence time, the low watershed load, and the close vicinity of clam beds to the mouth of Cherrystone Inlet, cultivated clams are likely subsidized by phytoplankton from the Chesapeake Bay. Consequently, much of the N released by mineralization associated with clam cultivation is “new” N as it would not be present in the system without bivalve facilitation. Macroalgae that are fueled by the enhanced N regeneration from clams represents a eutrophying process resulting from aquaculture. This synthesis demonstrates the importance of considering impacts of bivalve aquaculture in an ecosystem context especially relative to the potential of bivalves to remove nutrients and enhance C sinks.  相似文献

Production and resource use by intertidal taxa were studied in the estuarine fjord of Puget Sound, Washington, USA. Along nearly 100 km, salinity is similar, and intertidal habitat and immersion time were kept consistent, thus allowing a focus on other environmental variables such as temperature and resource availability that could influence growth. Primary producers (ulvoid and fucoid macroalgae) and suspension feeders (oysters and barnacles) were transplanted on three beaches in each of three regions and assessed for individual-level growth, carbon and nitrogen ratios, and stable isotopes. In most transplants, δ13C and C/N showed no regional variation but δ15N was enriched up-estuary. Among environmental variables, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, and particulate organic matter had small and/or inconsistent regional variation, but temperature was higher up-estuary. For the most intensively studied species (Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas) transplanted four times over 2 years, seasonal and regional variation in growth were best predicted by temperature rather than resource availability. Growth rates continued to increase into Totten Inlet, a shallow finger inlet at the head of Puget Sound. As indicators of environmental conditions, the growth and tissue chemistry of intertidal study taxa affirm that sources and amounts of resources show no strong gradients along this estuarine fjord, and they also support temperature as a key factor for performance, with species-specific responses. Higher temperatures may also have community-level impacts, given prior evidence linking beach temperatures to reduced intertidal diversity and biomass into Puget Sound.  相似文献

Depth-specific sampling at a single location was used to examine the vertical distribution of pediveliger larvae of bivalve mollusks in the York River, an estuary of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. The water column at the sampling site was usually well mixed, lacking consistent temperature or salinity gradients for larvae. Four species showed strong vertical stratification when collected simultaneously at three depths. Pediveliger stage larvae of a clam (Cyrtopleura costata), an oyster (Crassostrea virginica), and a shipworm (Bankia gouldi) were most abundant near the benthos, and least abundant near the surface. A mussel (Geukensia demissa), showed the reverse trend, with most pediveliger larvae near the surface. Tidal stage had a slight effect on two species (C. costata andC. virginica), but only to increase the relative abundance of larvae near the benthos during flood tide. Otherwise, neither tidal phase nor light levels (night versus day) had detectable effects on distribution patterns. Sampling very close to the sediment-water interface provided no evidence that pediveliger larvae spent a significant proportion of their time in this location. While the behavior of precompetent bivalve larvae may tend to retain them within an estuary, that of competent-to-metamorphose pediveliger larvae does not appear to have that function. Pediveliger larvae may regulate their depth to best locate potential settlement substrate. Such an hypothesis is consistent with adult habitat zones of at least some of these species in Chesapeake Bay. Removing competent-to-settle larvae from analyses of larval distributions in estuaries will enhance or clarify depth distribution patterns observed for earlier-stage larvae.  相似文献

Accumulation of bivalve recruits in the bottom convergence at the center of coastal eddies has been suggested as a possible mechanism resulting in locally abundant adult populations. We investigated transport of juvenile gem clams (Gemma gemma) in a headland wake to determine whether they accumulated, and where. Velocity measurements during three flood tides showed that a wake consistently formed, but that flow speeds were too slow to transport juvenile clams to the eddy center. Instead, the clams were deposited just inside the wake perimeter, where shear velocities decreased to levels below critical erosion velocities of the clams. This result demonstrated that accumulation in a coastal flow separation can occur even in the absence of a well-defined eddy or a strong bottom convergence. Juvenile gem clams were carried, probably as bedload, to regions in the wake dominated by sediments with similar grain sizes, rather than similar fall velocities, suggesting that bedload transport was particularly dependent on particle diameter in this flow regime. Adult gem clam populations tended to be locally abundant in regions receiving transported juveniles, but clam transport on any specific flood tide was not sufficient to fully predict the adult distributions.  相似文献

Prey ingested byMnemiopsis mccradyi collected in Link Port (Indian River, east coast of central Florida) consisted mostly of copepod nauplii, barnacle nauplii, bivalve veligers, and adult copepods (Acartia sp.,Oithona sp.); abundances in that order. Compared to relative in situ densities, there was an increased consumption of barnacle nauplii, bivalve veligers, andAcartia sp., and a decreasesed consumption of copepod nauplii andOithona sp., implying that prey selection had occurred. In situ clearance rates (based on numbers of ingested prey, digestion rates, and in situ prey densities) forM. mccradyi (5 cm mean length) were 0.1 to 1.31 h?1 individual?1, depending on prey taxon. These rates are less than those measured previously in the laboratory; however, it is not possible to state if this difference is statistically significant.  相似文献

Molluscs were collected monthly for a year from two low salinity (0–9‰) intertidal marshes dominated by the macrophytesJuncus roemerianus orSpartina cynosuroides in St. Louis Bay, Mississippi. TheJuncus marsh had lower soil organic matter, higher pH and was more frequently inundated than theSpartina marsh. Eight species of gastropods were abundant and dominated in the higherSpartina marsh, while three bivalve species were dominant in theJuncus marsh. Of the common species,Succinea ovalis, Vertigo ovata andDeroceras laeve are gastropods of terrestrial origins;Geukensia demissa granosissima (bivalve) andMelampus bidentatus (gastropod) are euryhaline estuarine species and the remaining gastropods (Detracia floridana, Littoridinops palustris, Onobops jacksoni) and bivalves (Polymesoda caroliniana, Cyrenoida floridana) are brackish species. Most species were capable of continuous recruitment (based on size class analysis), but exhibited peak activity in particular seasons. Bivalve abundance correlated to temperature, and gastropod abundance was negatively correlated to soil pH. These correlations reflect the influence of flooding regime at the two sites. Biomass was greater in theJuncus marsh because of the increased presence of the large-bodiedPolymesoda. Polymesoda represented >90% and >50% of the total biomass in theJuncus andSpartina (except summer) marshes respectively but always <-5% of the individuals collected. Gastropod biomass was the same in both marshes. Species diversity (H′) was greater inSpartina except for summer months. TheJuncus marsh always exhibited greater species richness. Evenness (J′) determined seasonal changes in diversity (H′). Similarity values (Cz) were always quite low, with highest values in spring In contrast to faunal studies from Gulf and East Coast salt marshes, we found 1) fewer species, 2) communities comprised of unique species combinations, 3) greatest mean densities in summer, and 4) potentially less productivity by the molluscs of our sites. These mollusc communities exhibit structural characteristics that emphasize the unique ecotonal nature of the oligohaline marshes within which they are found.  相似文献

Surf smelt Hypomesus pretiosus are an important part of the Salish Sea food web and obligate beach spawners, yet little is known about the spatiotemporal distribution of spawning and beach characteristics related to spawning success. We counted smelt eggs at 51 sites around Camano Island, Puget Sound, Washington every 2?weeks for 1?year and at 13 of those 51 sites each month in the following year. At each site, we measured beach characteristics hypothesized to affect spawning habitat suitability as measured by egg abundance and mortality. Eggs were collected at 45 sites and pooled by month for analyses. Few sites (N?=?10, 19.6?%) contributed 87?% of total eggs and 89?% of all live eggs collected. Mean total egg counts at sites were higher (p?<?0.019) in Jul?CSep (1,790.7, SE?=?829.5) than in Jan?CMar (26.1, SE?=?10.2). Principal component and regression analyses suggested that aspect, fetch, solar radiation, and beach temperature predicted egg abundance but not mortality. Because a small proportion of sites appear to support most spawning activity, a conclusion consistent with year?2 egg counts, impacts to relatively few beaches could greatly affect surf smelt production.  相似文献

Populations of the hard clam,Mercenaria mercenaria, were sampled at thirty sites in the lower Chesapeake Bay region in 1972 and 1973. Subsamples were taken for analysis for the trace metals cadmium, copper and zinc. Emphasis was placed on samples from the York and James rivers, two very productive and commercially utilized clam grounds. The levels of metals determined were comparable to those reported from other regions except Southampton Water in the United Kingdom. Differences in levels between the York and James rivers were statistically significant (P<0.001) which indicates that the James River probably suffers from contamination by these metals. One metal, copper, varied significantly with the age of the organism whereas the other two, cadmium and zinc, varied with salinity. InMercenaria the salinity of the sampling site must be considered before cadmium and zinc data can be interpreted. A standard action-level to denote pollution from copper would be adequate in this species.  相似文献

Effects of petroleum covered substrate on intertidal oyster spat (Crassostrea virginica) set were measured at three intertidal elevations in a southeastern North Carolina estuary.Mercenaria mercenaria shells were coated with Bunker C crude oil or a 40∶1 mixture of gasoline: 2-cycle engine oil and placed intertidally for seven 13-d periods. Spat densities were significantly lower on oil treatments versus control and gas-treated shells in the high intertidal zone. This was principally attributed to an increased sediment coat on oiled shells. Maximum spat size was smaller on oil-treated shells at all elevations when compared to gas and control shells, indicating that setting may be delayed on oiled shell. For all experimental 13-d periods in the low intertidal zone and for three periods in the mid-tidal zone, barnacle densities (primarilyBalanus improvisus andB. eburneus) were significantly greater on oiled shells than on control shells.  相似文献

Climate changes affect marine ecosystems and the survival, growth, reproduction and distribution of species, including those targeted by commercial fisheries. The impact of climate change has been reported for many fish species, but studies focusing on the effects of climate on bivalve resources are lacking. In Portugal, the harvesting of bivalves is an old and artisanal activity, of special importance along the Algarve coast (South of Portugal). This study aims to evaluate the influence of climatic, environmental and fisheries factors on the landings of intertidal coastal lagoon and coastal bivalve species (subtidal nearshore species). The environmental and fisheries parameters considered to affect the landings of bivalves in the eastern Algarve were: fishing effort (number of fishing events), sea surface temperature, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, upwelling index, wind magnitude and direction and river discharges. Analysis of time series data using min/max autocorrelation factor analysis and dynamic factor analysis showed that, for most species, fishing effort was positively related with landings per unit effort trends in the following year. Lagoon bivalve species (Cerastoderma edule and Ruditapes decussatus) responded to different environmental variables than the coastal bivalve species (Chamelea gallina, Pharus legumen, Donax spp. and Spisula solida). Upwelling index had a significant effect on the lagoon bivalves while the NAO index, wind magnitude and direction, and river discharges only affected the coastal species. This study highlighted the need to adapt fishing effort regimes, while considering the background effects of environmental variability, in order to improve fisheries management.  相似文献

Populations of suspension feeding bivalves constitute a metabolically important component of the benthos in Colorado Lagoon, Long Beach, California. Oxygen and nutrient flux were measuredin situ at monthly intervals over a two-year period. Estimates of bivalve metabolism were based on regressions of oxygen and ammonium flux on a measure of clam biomass adjusted allometrically. The introduced bivalve,Mercenaria mercenaria, occurs at maximum densities exceeding 400 per m2. Based on mean densities (143 per m2), bivalves contributed more than 50% of the 77 mg O2 per m2 per hr mean annual oxygen uptake and the 191 μM per m2 per hr mean ammonium release. Although bivalve biomass was not correlated with other inorganic nutrient flux, on an annual basis the sediments were a source of phosphate (26 μM per m2 per hr annual average, range 5 to 50) and a small sink for nitrate and nitrite. Net primary production, ammonium flux, and phosphate flux showed great annual variability while respiration was relatively constant. Total community oxygen uptake was not correlated with temperature. Long term incubations revealed no obvious rhythms having a period between four hours and four days. The benthic flux of ammonium and phosphate was calculated to supply more than the annual requirement of Lagoon phytoplankton.  相似文献

Breeding activity of the horseshoe crab,Limulus polyphemus, was quantitatively monitored in Apalachee Bay, Florida, throughout one breeding season. Breeding peaked at times of full and new moon at the hour of high tide. Breeding activity was heavier on night tides than on corresponding day tides of the same date. Males routinely outnumbered females and indications of sperm competition were present. Many horseshoe crabs buried in the intertidal zone throughout the subsequent low tide and returned to the beach to breed again on the following high tide. A tagging study of the horseshoe crab indicated that male animals return to breeding beaches more frequently than females. Most animals tagged at breeding beaches did not move away from the tagging site during a breeding season and were recovered at the point of release. No long-range movements were noted. The sex ratio of animals tagged near breeding beaches was predominately male while it was predominately female for animals collected and tagged 3–6 miles offshore. A nine percent recovery rate was achieved. Existing localized populations are potentially subject to depletion due to heavy collecting pressure on breeding beaches.  相似文献

Surface water transport and larval dispersal potential within Mission Bay, San Diego, California and along the southern California coast were studied with drift test tubes. Drift tubes, released once during each season at six sites inside Mission Bay, traveled up to 173 km north and 205 km south of Mission Bay at maximum rates of 36 cm per s (north) and 50 cm per s (south). These findings were used to estimate probability of larval transport out of Mission Bay for the intertidal spionid polychaete Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata (Okuda) which occurred in the back of the bay. Outer coast drift tube returns were used to determine potential for gene flow, via larval exchange, between populations in isolated bays along the California coast. Drift tube recoveries and larval abundances in the plankton indicate that few Pseudopolydora larvae leave Mission Bay, but that longshore currents can carry those which do to other suitable bay habitats.  相似文献

Two polynomial constitutive equations of nonlinear stress–strain relationship were used to construct two nonlinear 1-D wave equations with external pressure (source term) applied. Nonlinear model 1 was a concave downward curve, and nonlinear model 2 was a concave upward curve. The time-dependent stress and strain of a 300-m length were calculated. The computation for nonlinear model 1 terminated at time t?=?5.0 s. The evaluated stress versus position at different times was mainly at position x?=?0 m. The stress versus position had a concave point at position x?=?0.3 m. Between x?=?0 m and x?=?0.3 m, the graph of stress versus position showed a small convex upward curve. Moreover, at the two sides of x?=?0.3 m, the strain position had distinctively different slopes. The distinctive difference in the slope of strain at position x?=?0.3 m can therefore be used to estimate the rupture position of a rock. The terminal evaluation time for nonlinear model 2 was at t?=?1.55 s. The stress versus position and the strain versus position to time change were within the 0–3 m interval from the pressure end. Time increase produced the phenomenon of stress and strain solitons. These stress and strain solitons moved forward and increased in peak value with time. During the compression process, the stress and strain soliton resulted in instability which rendered the rock situation more easily broken. The position of the rock rupture might have occurred away from the pressure side.  相似文献
