Results of long-term (2002–2010) monitoring of giant radio pulses of the pulsar PSR B0531+21 in the Crab Nebula at ν = 44, 63, and 111 MHz are reported. The observations were conducted on the LPA and DKR-1000 radio telescopes of the Lebedev Physical Institute. The giant pulses were analyzed using specialized software for calculating the magnitude of the scattering τ sc , signal-to-noise ratio, and other required parameters by modeling the propagation of a pulse in the scattering interstellar medium. Three pronounced sharp increases in the scattering were recorded in 2002–2010. Analysis of the dependence between the variations of the scattering and dispersion measure (data of Jodrell Bank Observatory) shows a strong correlation at all frequencies, ≈0.9. During periods of anomalous increase in scattering and the dispersion measure, the index γ in the frequency dependence of the scattering in the Crab Nebula, τ sc (ν) ∝ ν γ , was smaller than the generally accepted values γ = 4.0 for a Gaussian and γ = 4.4 for a Kolmogorov distribution. This difference in combination with the piece-wise power-law spectrum may be due to the presence of a dense plasma structure with developed Langmuir turbulence in the nebula, along the pulsar’s line of sight. The magnetic field in the Crab Nebula estimated from measurements of the rotation measure toward the pulsar is 100 μG.  相似文献

The pulse structure of the pulsar B1822-09 has been studied at 112, 62, and 42 MHz. The observations were conducted in 2010 on the Large Scanning Antenna and the DKR-1000 radio telescope of the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory. The shape of the main pulse and interpulse undergo considerable changes at low radio frequencies. In the main pulse, the precursor disappears and is replaced by a new component that trails 50 ms behind the main component. At 62 MHz, the interpulse acquires a pronounced two-peaked shape. At 62 and 112 MHz, as well as at higher frequencies, the brighter second component of the interpulse follows the main pulse at 185° and has a relative amplitude of about 5%. The main pulse width changes with frequency according to the power law W 0.5ν −0.15 in the frequency range 42–4750-MHz. The interpulse width follows this law only in the range 325–4750 MHz; at 112, 102, and 62 MHz, the interpulse is almost a factor of three broader than themain pulse. The parameters of the pulse’s scattering on interstellar plasma inhomogeneities and the initial pulse width before it enters the scattering medium have been measured at 62 and 42 MHz. The frequency dependence of the characteristic scale for scattering of the pulses of B1822-09 corresponds to a Kolmogorov spectrum for the electron-density fluctuations in the interstellar medium in the direction toward this pulsar.  相似文献

The pulsar PSR B2111+46 has been observed at 112 MHz, and a new approach to analyzing pulsar pulses scattered in turbulent interstellar plasma applied. This method is based on the dependence of the normalized energy in the trailing part of a pulse on the intrapulse time. Since the trailing edge of a pulse follow exponential law to high accuracy, the inner turbulence scale of the interstellar plasma exceeds the field coherence scale. The measured scattering parameter is τ sc = 147 ± 1 ms. Analysis of the parameters of diffractive and refractive scintillations of the pulsar at 610 MHz together with the 112 MHz data shows that the spectrum of the interstellar plasma toward PSR B2111+46 is a piecewise power law: on scales of 1013–1014 cm, the exponent of the turbulence spectrum is n ≃ 4, whereas n = 3.5 on scales of 2 × 108−1013 cm. The spectrum flattens with approach to the inner turbulence scale l: n = 3–3.2. The obtained inner turbulence scale is l = (3.5 ± 1.5) × 107 cm. The distribution of the interstellar plasma toward the pulsar is close to statistically homogeneous. The local density (N e = 0.4 cm−3) and filling factor (F = 0.04) of the interstellar plasma have been estimated. The similarity of N e estimates obtained from the inner scale of the inhomogeneities and the ratio of the emission measure to the dispersion measure provides evidence that the inner turbulence scale corresponds to the ion inertial length.  相似文献

We have measured the pulse broadening by scattering at 40, 60, and 111 MHz for the pulsars PSR B0809+74, B0950+08, B1919+21, and B2303+30. The frequency dependence of the scatter-broadening parameter is analyzed based on these measurements and data from the literature. The dependence obtained purely from the literature data is not consistent with the theory, and the scattering magnitudes differs considerably from the data of the catalog of 706 pulsars of Taylor et al. A two-component model for the frequency dependence of the scattering of the pulsar radio emission in the interstellar medium is proposed. Allowing for the presence of two scattering scales removes both inconsistencies between the observational data for these four pulsars and differences between the observed and theoretical frequency dependences for the scattering, as well as the need to invoke anomalous scattering magnitudes. The data of the catalog of Taylor et al. need to be corrected for the difference in the scattering magnitudes in the two branches of the frequency dependence.  相似文献

The statistical dependence of τ/(DM)2 (the ratio of the broadening of a pulsar pulse due to scattering in the interstellar medium to the square of the pulsar’s dispersion measure) on the pulsar’s dispersionmeasure, Galactic coordinates, age, and the angular distance to the nearest supernova remnant are studied. This parameter describes the relative level of electron density fluctuations in the turbulent interstellar plasma. It is shown that the interstellar plasma turbulence level is three orders of magnitude higher in the spiral arms of the Galaxy than outside the arms. The plasma turbulence level is approximately an order of magnitude higher in the Galactic arms, in regions within ?0.3° of supernova remnants, than outside these regions. We conclude that the source of energy for the turbulence in the Galactic arms is supernova explosions in the denser medium there.  相似文献

The emission of hydrogen radio recombination lines from a cloud of cool interstellar matter toward the radio source Cassiopeia A has been detected. The formation of the radio recombination lines is initiated by cosmic rays. The rate of ionization of the interstellar hydrogen by cosmic-ray protons measured from the radio recombination lines using the most direct method is ζH = (1 ± 0.25)×10−16 s−1. This value of ζH is compared with measurements obtained using other methods.  相似文献

Measurements of the broadening of pulsar pulses by scattering in the interstellar medium are presented for a complete sample of 100 pulsars with Galactic longitudes from 6° to 311° and distances to three kiloparsec. The dependences of the scattering on the dispersion measure (τ sc(DM) ∝ DMα), frequency (τ sc(v) ∝ v ?γ ), Galactic longitude, and distance to the pulsar are analyzed. The dependence of the scattering on the dispersion measure in the near-solar neighbourhood can be represented by the power law τ sc(DM) ∝ DM2.2±0.1). Measurements at the low frequencies 111, 60, and 40 MHz and literature data are used to derive the frequency dependence of the scattering (τ sc(v) ∝ V ?γ ) over a wide frequency interval (covering a range of less than 10: 1) with no fewer than five frequencies. The index for the frequency dependence, γ = 4.1 ± 0.3, corresponds to a normal distribution for inhomogeneities in the turbulence in the scattering medium. Based on an analysis of the dependence of the scattering on the distance to the pulsar and on Galactic longitude, on average, the turbulence level C n 2 is the same in all directions and at all distances out to about three kpc, testifying to the statistical homogeneity of the turbulence of the scattering medium in the near-solar region of the Galaxy.  相似文献

The results of simultaneous multifrequency observations of giant radio pulses from the Crab pulsar, PSR B0531+21, at 23, 111, and 600 MHz are presented and analyzed. Giant pulses were detected at a frequency as low as 23 MHz for the first time. Of the 45 giant pulses detected at 23 MHz, 12 were identified with counterparts observed simultaneously at 600 MHz. Of the 128 giant pulses detected at 111 MHz, 21 were identified with counterparts observed simultaneously at 600 MHz. The spectral indices for the power-law frequency dependence of the giant-pulse energies are from ?3.1 to ?1.6. The mean spectral index is ?2.7 ± 0.1 and is the same for both frequency combinations (600–111 MHz and 600–23 MHz). The large scatter in the spectral indices of the individual pulses and the large number of unidentified giant pulses suggest that the spectra of the individual giant pulses do not actually follow a simple power law. The observed shapes of the giant pulses at all three frequencies are determined by scattering on interstellar plasma inhomogeneities. The scatter-broadening of the pulses and its frequency dependence were determined as τ sc = 20(ν/100)?3.5±0.1 ms, where frequency ν is in MHz.  相似文献

Interstellar turbulent plasma can be considered to be a radio astronomy antenna—an interstellar diffraction grating, with an aperture size roughly equal to the scattering-disk radius, R sc = z eff θ sc ≈ 1 AU (where z eff is the effective distance and θ sc the scattering angle). The angular resolution of this interstellar diffraction grating is of the order of ϕ dif = 1/(k R sc ). A single ground-based radio telescope can be used as a receiver for the interstellar diffraction grating. The grating’s parameters can be obtained only from observations on a system of interferometers with an angular resolution comparable to the scattering angle θ sc . The range of baselines necessary to determine the parameters of the grating is close that of the Earth-space RadioAstron interferometer.  相似文献

The spectra and visibility functions of giant pulses of the Crab Nebula pulsar derived from VLBI observations carried out through the “RadioAstron” project in 2015 are analyzed. Parameters of the scattering of the pulses in the interstellar medium are measured, namely, the scattering time and decorrelation bandwidth. A comparative analysis of the shapes of the spectra and visibility functions of giant pulses obtained in real observations and via modeling of their scattering is carried out. The results suggest the presence of short bursts (dt < 30 ns) in the structure of the giant pulses at 1668 MHz, whose brightness temperatures exceed 1038 K. These pulses propagate in the pulsar magnetosphere in a strong electromagneticwave regime, leading to the generation of additional radiation perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the giant pulses. This radiation may be associated with anomalous components of the mean pulse profile observed at frequencies above 4 GHz.  相似文献

One well-defined OH Raman band at 3651 ± 1 cm−1 and one weak feature near 3700 ± 5 cm−1 are recognized for the hydrous γ-phase of Mg2SiO4. Like the hydrous β-phase, the H2O content in the γ-phase shifts most of the corresponding silicate modes towards lower frequencies. Variations in Raman spectra of the hydrous γ-phase were investigated up to about 200 kbar at room temperature and in the range 81–873 K at atmospheric pressure. Unlike the anhydrous γ-phase, which remains intact up to at least 873 K, the hydrous γ-phase sometimes converts to a defective forsterite structure above 800 K. Although the hydrous γ-phase remains intact up to at least 800 K, Raman signals of the OH bands disappear completely above 423 K. The Raman frequency of the well-defined OH band decreases linearly with increasing temperature between 81 and 423 K. In the region of the silicate vibrations, the Raman frequencies of the two most intense bands increase nonlinearly with increasing pressure, and decrease with increasing temperature. The frequencies for all other weak bands, however, decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The latter most likely reflects the larger scatter of the data for the weak bands.  High-pressure Raman investigations were carried out on a synthetic fluorapatite up to about 7 GPa to analyse the behaviour of the phosphate group's internal modes and of its lattice modes. The Raman frequencies of all modes increased with pressure and a trend toward reduced splitting was observed for the PO4-stretching modes [(ν3a(Ag) and ν3b(Ag); ν3a(E2g) and ν3b(E2g)] and the PO4 out-of-plane bending modes [ν4a(Ag) and ν4b(Ag)]. The pressure coefficients of phosphate modes ranged from 0.0047 to 0.0052 GPa−1 for ν3, from 0.0025 to 0.0044 GPa−1 for ν4, from 0.0056 to 0.0086 GPa−1 for ν2 and 0.0046 for ν1 GPa−1, while the pressure coefficients of lattice modes ranged from 0.0106 to 0.0278 GPa−1. The corresponding Grüneisen parameters varied from 0.437 to 0.474, 0.428, 0.232 to 0.409 and 0.521 to 0.800 for phosphate modes ν3, ν1, ν4, ν2, respectively, and from 0.99 to 2.59 for lattice modes. The vibrational behaviour was interpreted in view of the high-pressure structural refinement performed on the same crystal under the same experimental conditions. The reduced splitting may thus be linked to the reduced distortion of the environment around the phosphate tetrahedron rather than to the decrease of the tetrahedral distortion itself. Moreover, the amount of calcium polyhedral compression, which is about three times the compression of phosphate tetrahedra, may explain the different Grüneisen parameters.  The incorporation of hydrogen (deuterium) into the coesite structure was investigated at pressures from 3.1 to 7.5 GPa and temperatures of 700, 800, and 1100 °C. Hydrogen could only be incorporated into the coesite structure at pressures greater 5.0 GPa and 1100 °C . No correlation between the concentration of trace elements such as Al and B and the hydrogen content was observed based on ion probe analysis (1335 ± 16 H ppm and 17 ± 1 Al ppm at 7.5 GPa, 1100 °C). The FTIR spectra show three relatively intense bands at 3575, 3516, and 3459 cm−11 to ν3, respectively) and two very weak bands at 3296 and 3210 cm−14 and ν5, respectively). The band at 3516 cm−1 is strongly asymmetric and can be resolved into two bands, 3528 (ν2a) and 3508 (ν2b) cm−1, with nearly identical areas. Polarized infrared absorption spectra of coesite single-crystal slabs, cut parallel to (0 1 0) and (1 0 0), were collected to locate the OH dipoles in the structure and to calibrate the IR spectroscopy for quantitative analysis of OH in coesite (ɛ i ,tot=190 000 ± 30 000 l mol−1 H2O cm−2). The polarized spectra revealed a strong pleochroism of the OH bands. High-pressure FTIR spectra at pressures up to 8 GPa were performed in a diamond-anvil cell to gain further insight into incorporation mechanism of OH in coesite. The peak positions of the ν1, ν2, and ν3 bands decrease linearly with pressure. The mode Grüneisen parameters for ν1, ν2, and ν3 are −0.074, −0.144 and −0.398, respectively. There is a linear increase of the pressure derivatives with band position which follows the trend proposed by Hofmeister et al. (1999). The full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the ν1, ν2, and ν3 bands increase from 35, 21, and 28 cm−1 in the spectra at ambient conditions to 71, 68, and 105 in the 8 GPa spectra, respectively. On the basis of these results, a model for the incorporation of hydrogen in coesite was developed: the OH defects are introduced into the structure by the substitution Si4+(Si2)+4O2−= [4](Si2) + 4OH, which gives rise to four vibrations, ν1, ν2a, ν2b, and ν3. Because the OH(D)-bearing samples do contain traces of Al and B, the bands ν4 and ν5 may be coupled to Al and/or B substitution. Received: 19 December 2000 / Accepted: 23 April 2001  相似文献

The detection of pulsed radio emission from the X-ray pulsar AXP 4U 0142+61 with a period of P = 8.68832935(6) s and a period derivative of $ \dot P $ \dot P = 18.713(4) × 10−13 s/s is reported. The observations were carried out on two high-sensitivity radio telescopes of the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory: the Large Phased Array at 111MHz and the DKR-1000 at 40MHz.Mean pulse profiles are presented; the measured flux density is S 111 = 30 ± 20 mJy. The estimated distance derived from the dispersion measure, 27 pc/cm3, is 1.4 kpc, and the integrated radio luminosity is L R = 1.5 × 1027 erg/cm. Comparison with X-ray data shows an appreciable difference in the pulse duration (the radio pulse is about a factor of 20 more narrow) and strong variations in the flux density.  相似文献

We present an analysis of pulsar observations carried out on two frequency channels at 1634 MHz and 1650 MHz with a time resolution of 62.5 ns on the 70-m radio telescope of the NASA Deep Space Network in Tidbinbilla. The data were recorded using the S2 system, intended primarily for VLBI observations. Microstructure with characteristic timescales of 270, 80, and 150 µs was detected in pulsars B0833-45, B1749-28, and B1933 + 16, respectively. The distribution of microstructure timescales for the Vela pulsar (B0833-45) is characterized by a gradual growth with decreasing timescale to 200 µs; the distribution has a maximum at 20–200 µs and falls off sharply for timescales below 20 µs. The statistical relation between the microstructure modulation index m and the corresponding timescale τµ can be approximated by the power law dependence Rτ 0.5 ; i.e., the intensity is higher for micropulses with longer durations. This contradicts the predictions of nonlinear models for the formation of micropulses by supercompact soliton wave packets. In all the pulsars studied, the time delays of the micropulses between the two frequency channels deviate from the expected dispersion laws for the interstellar plasma. In particular, the micropulses in the low-frequency channel arrive earlier than predicted by the dispersion measures derived previously from the mean pulse profiles. The deviation from the dispersion delay is determined most accurately for B0833-45, and is 4.9±0.2 µs. Such anomalous delays are probably associated with the effects of propagation of the radio emission within the pulsar magnetosphere.  相似文献

Observations on the RadioAstron ground–space interferometer with the participation of the Green Bank and Arecibo ground telescopes at 1668 MHz have enabled studies of the characteristics of the interstellar plasma in the direction of the pulsar PSR B0525+21. The maximum projected baseline for the ground–space interferometer was 233 600 km. The scintillations in these observations were strong, and the spectrum of inhomogeneties in the interstellar plasma was a power law with index n = 3.74, corresponding to a Kolmogorov spectrum. A new method for estimating the size of the scattering disk was applied to estimate the scattering angle (scattering disk radius) in the direction toward PSR B0525+21, θ scat = 0.028 ± 0.002 milliarcsecond. The scattering in this direction occurs in a plasma layer located at a distance of 0.1Z from the pulsar, where Z is the distance from the pulsar to the observer. For the adopted distance Z = 1.6 kpc, the screen is located at a distance of 1.44 kpc from the observer.  相似文献

The paper considers possible observational implications of the presence of dark matter in the Galaxy in the form of dense gas clouds—clumpuscules with masses M c ~10?3 M and radii R c~3×1013 cm. The existence of such clouds is implied by modern interpretations of extreme scattering events—variations in quasar radio fluxes due to refraction in dense plasma condensations in the Galactic halo. The rate of collisions between these clouds is shown to be rather high: from 1 to 10M per year is ejected into the interstellar medium as a result of such collisions. The optical continuum and 21-cm emission from hot post-collision gas could be observable. Gas clouds composed of dark matter could be formed around O stars in an H II region with radius R~30 pc and emission measure EM?20 cm?6 pc. They could also be observable in the Hα line. The evaporation of clumpuscules by external ionizing radiation could be a substantial source of matter for the interstellar medium. Assuming that the total mass of matter entering the interstellar medium over the Hubble time does not exceed the mass of luminous matter in the Galaxy, upper limits are found for the cloud radii (R c<3.5×1012 cm) and the contribution of clouds to the surface density of the Galaxy (<50M pc?2). Dissipation of the kinetic energy of matter lost by clumpuscules could provide an efficient mechanism for heating gas in the Galactic halo.  相似文献

Data on the profiles and polarization of the 10- and 20-cm emission of radio pulsars are used to calculate the angle β between the rotational axis of the neutron star and its magnetic moment. It is shown that, for these calculations, it is sufficient to use catalog values of the pulse width at the 10% level W 10, since the broadening of the observed pulses due to the transition to the full width W 0 and narrowing of the pulses associated with the emission of radiation along tangents to the field lines approximately cancel each other out. The angles β 1 are calculated for 283 pulsars at 20 cm and 132 pulsars at 10 cm, assuming that the line of sight passes through the center of the emission cone. The mean values of these angles are small and similar for the two wavelengths (〈β 1〉 = 18° at λ = 10 cm and 〈β 1〉 = 14° at λ = 20 cm). The angle β 2 is estimated for several dozen pulsars for the case when the orientation of the angle to the line of sight is arbitrary. The mean value of β 2 at 10 cm is found to be 〈β 2〉 = 33.9° if the maximum derivative of the polarization position angle C is positive and 〈β 2〉 = 52.1° ifC < 0. We find at 20 cm 〈β 2〉 = 33.9° ifC > 0 and 〈β2〉 = 54.1° ifC < 0. The values at the two wavelengths are equal within the errors, and close to the β 2 value obtained earlier at 30 cm (〈β 2〉 = 36.4° if C >0 and 〈β2〉 = 49.1° if C < 0). The mean 〈β 2〉 for the entire set of data can be taken to be 43.5°. The period dependence of the pulse width W(P) √ P −0.25 differs from the relation that is usually used in the polar-cap model, W(P) √ P −0.5. This difference could be associated with the rate of development of plasma instabilities near the surface of the neutron star (in the region where high-frequency radiation is generated). The role of the quadrupole component of the magnetic field is not important here. There is no dependence of the angle β on the pulsar age (z distance, luminosity L, or characteristic age τ = P/(2dP/dt)) for the studied sample.  相似文献

The effects of the modulation of radio waves during their passage through turbulent interstellar plasma on measurements of the structure of radio sources made with ultrahigh angular resolution using space radio interferometers are considered. Typical scattering angles?scat, pl for an extragalactic radio source at various wavelengths are estimated from scattering observations for pulsars and extragalactic sources. The (?0λ) plane, where ?0 is the source size and λ is the wavelength of the radio emission, can be divided into five regions, in which different regimes of radio-wave modulation and image reconstruction are realized. Possibilities for image reconstruction in each of these regions are investigated.  相似文献

The interstellar scintillation of the pulsars PSR B0809+74 and B0950+08 have been studied using observations at low radio frequencies (41, 62, 89, and 112 MHz), and the characteristic temporal and frequency scales for diffractive scintillations at these frequencies determined. A comprehensive analysis of the frequency and temporal structure functions reduced to a single frequency shows that the spectra of the inhomogeneities of the interstellar plasma toward both pulsars are described by a power law. The index of the interstellar plasma fluctuation spectrum toward PSR B0950+08 (n = 3.00 ± 0.05) differs appreciably from the Kolmogorov index. The spectrum toward PSR B0809+74 is a power law with index n = 3.7 ± 0.1. Strong angular refraction has been detected toward PSR B0950+08. Analysis of the distribution of inhomogeneities along the line of sight indicates that the scintillations of PSR B0950+08 take place in a turbulent layer with an enhanced electron density localized approximately 10 pc from the observer. The distribution of inhomogeneities for PSR B0809+74 is quasi-uniform. The mean square fluctuations of the electron density are estimated for inhomogeneities with characteristic scale ρ 0 = 107 m along the directions toward four pulsars. The local turbulence in the 10-pc layer is a factor of 20 higher on this scale than in the extended region responsible for the scintillations of PSR B0809+74.  相似文献
