Land application is the only currently available technique for sewage wastewater disposal along the Nile Valley in Upper Egypt. Wastewater disposal projects have been established in the lowland desert zone extending between the cultivated floodplain and the Eocene Limestone plateau. The plan is to use the treated wastewater in irrigating woody farmlands. Some wastewater disposal sites are already operating, and several others will be established in the near future. The proposed wastewater disposal sites are located in a sensitive desert zone that is extremely narrow and situated very close to vital resources including the cultivated floodplain, reclaimed lands, residential areas, and surface water resources. In addition, the subsurface sediments of this zone (Pleistocene sand–gravel succession) constitute a significant part of the Quaternary aquifer of the valley. The objective of this study is to characterize and investigate the wastewater disposal sites and assess their probable environmental hazards. The study showed that the available lands are insufficient to accommodate the projected quantities of wastewater. At the currently operating sites, excess raw wastewater is accumulating on the ground surface forming large uncontrolled ponds. Such wastewater ponds represent a potential environmental hazard and might cause disastrous health effects, where chemical and bacteriological pollution of soil, crops and water resources may occur.  相似文献

Recent research on the Somme Valley terrace deposits, that began in 1987, has resulted in an integrated sequence of geological and geomorphological evidence for this area that is of particular significance for prehistoric investigations. This has been achieved using previous evidence and new results from archaeological and geological excavations. These include longitudinal profiles, cartography and detailed synthesis of sections of alluvial deposits, stratigraphy of river deposits and overlying loess sequences. The work, based on a study of the geometry of the terrace system, has resulted in the identification of ninestepped alluvial formations that occur along 70 km of the valley. Detailed study permits the integration of the various alluvial sequences. This suggests that each alluvial sequence results from sedimentation through a single glacial-interglacial climatic cycle. This hypothesis is confirmed by investigation of soil and loess sequences of the deposits overlying the fluvial sediments. The synthesis presented provides a basis for understanding the deposition of the terrace system and an initial chronostratigraphic interpretation for the deposits.  相似文献

At least six devastating glacial floods occurred in the Karambar valley in the 19th and 20th century. Previously mainly the Karambar glacier was considered as the origin of these outburst floods. However, in this project more detailed investigations revealed that up to eight more tributary glaciers could have dammed the Karambar valley in historical and prehistorical times. The ice-dammed lakes reached an approximate length of up to about 5 km and more. The dense concentration of the glacier dams along a horizontal distance of only 40 km results in a complex interfingering of lake basins and flooded valley sections. In the individual flood events were probably involved almost synchronously the drainage of at least two lakes resulting in a lake outburst cascade. The Karambar case study highlights the characteristic geomorphological landforms of the glacier dams, their lake basins and the geomorphological impact of the outburst floods. The abundant occurrence of unconsolidated sediments mantling the valley flanks caused a high sediment load and enhanced the erosion potential of the flood. The erosion cliffs of sediment cones, up to 100 m high, wash limits along the slopes and longitudinal bars in the gravel floors are main characteristics of the flood landscape. Secondary temporary lake formations (back water ponding) during the flood events in consequence of blockages of the ice- and sediment-loaden flood masses occurred at many locations in the narrower valley sections and lasted for several days. Additionally, debris flows in-between the glacier dams have dammed temporarily the Karambar valley. On the basis of losses of settlement area and eye-witness reports, the extent, erosion rates and characteristics of the 1905 flood event could be reconstructed. In order to warn the villagers living downstream, the Karambar people established an early warning fire system (Puberanch) from Sokther Rabot to Gilgit which was operated until 1905. The reconstructed Karambar flood chronology represents one of the longest records for this region and provides also information on historical and recent glacier oscillations, especially on exceptional glacier advances. At present, the Chateboi glacier seals the Karambar valley over a distance of 4 km. An outburst flood would have disastrous impacts to the human infrastructure as the settlement areas expanded to the flood plains in the last decades.  相似文献

Uraniferous Holocene sediments occur in the Carson Range of Nevada and California, U.S.A., between Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley. The hosts for the uranium include peat and interbedded organic-rich sand, silt, and mud that underly valley floors, fens, and marshes along stream valleys between the crest of the range and the edge of Lake Tahoe. The known uranium accumulations extend along the Carson Range from the area just southeast of South Lake Tahoe northward to the area just east of Carson City; however, they almost certainly continue beyond the study area to the north, west, and south. Due to the young age of the accumulations, uranium in them is in gross disequilibrium with its highly radioactive daughter products. These accumulations have thus escaped discovery with radiation detection equipment in the past. The uranium content of these sediments approaches 0.6 percent; however, the average is in the range of 300–500 ppm. Waters associated with these sediments locally contain as much as 177 ppb uranium. Modest levels of helium and radon also occur in these waters.Uraniferous waters are clearly entering the private and public water supply systems in some parts of the study area; however, it is not known how much uranium is reaching users of these water supplies. Many of the waters sampled in the study area exceed the published health effects guidance level of the Environmental Protection Agency. Regulatory standards for uranium in waters have not been published, however.Much uranium is stored in the sediments along these stream valleys. Estimates for a marsh and a fen along one drainage are 24,000 and 15,000 kg, respectively. The potential effects of man-induced environmental changes on the uranium are uncertain. Laboratory studies of uraniferous sediment rich in organic matter may allow us to evaluate the potential of liberating uranium from such sediments and creating transient increases in the level of uranium moving in water in the natural environment.  相似文献

基于在研究前人洞庭湖冲积平原区土壤测量资料时发现湘江、资水、沅江、澧水河口三角洲土壤中有明显的成矿元素聚集,且成矿元素的种类、含量与流域内的矿产种类、储量大小密切相关等的资料,以及6年来已经在湘江流域发现了一处巨型锡矿,铜、金矿勘查取得了重大进展的成果,对湘江、资水、沅江、澧水的三角洲及洞庭湖平原长江沉积物中的元素含量做进一步的预测研究。研究结果表明:1)用河口三角洲沉积物中的元素含量减去背景值后的值与汇水盆地面积、厚度及岩石密度相乘的乘积可以大致预测数万平方公里流域内的矿产储量;2)将沉积物厚度分别规定为1.5m,2m,3m和5m,可大致体现不同地质工作程度所取得的储量;3)6年来锡储量的增加完全证实了预测的一定可靠性;4)利用湘江、资水、沅江、澧水河口三角洲元素含量预测上游流域内矿产储量的可行性,大胆探索了利用洞庭湖沉积物中成矿元素含量预测长江上游100余万平方公里汇水流域内的矿产储量。2004年谢学锦院士与挪威的J.Bogen和R.Ottesen开始酝酿一个全球大科学计划“沿世界主要河流的全球地球化学填图”。计划在世界主要大江大河及其支流的河口共采集2000~2500个组合样,分析其中71~76种元素及一些有机物的含量,用以迅速评估全球矿产资源潜力与环境现状。文章认为,  相似文献

河流系统的发育往往能反映相关地质作用的细节.对东昆仑山东段北坡众多河流阶地及其沉积物的研究表明, 该区在早更新世晚期昆仑-黄河运动之后形成的东西向盆岭相间的地貌特征奠定了早期河流为东西向外流水系的基础; 中更新世晚期以来的又一次强烈构造抬升事件———共和运动, 导致昆仑山北坡各主要河流迅速溯源侵蚀发展, 伴随河流袭夺而形成现今的水系格局; 晚更新世晚期存在一段相对较长的构造稳定期, 河谷普遍发生堆积作用, 形成分布广泛且厚度较大的晚更新世冲积层; 接近全新世以来构造运动频繁而隆升的幅度趋于减弱, 形成了5级河流阶地, 并且阶地的发育类型普遍为以高级阶地(T5) 为基座的上叠阶地, 河流至今未能切穿晚更新世稳定期形成的厚冲积层.   相似文献

Reinvestigation of Quaternary sediments in West Feliciana Parish, southeastern Louisiana, and adjacent Wilkinson County, southwestern Mississippi, has resulted in revision of previous terrace stratigraphy of this portion of the Gulf Coastal Plain. Plant-macrofossil and pollen assemblages incorporated in fluviatile terrace deposits in the study area are reexamined in light of the current stratigraphic understanding. Macrofossils identified as white spruce (Picea glauca), tamarack (Larix laricina), and northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), recovered from these terrace deposits along with fossil remains of distinctly southern plant species, were initially interpreted as the result of dynamic intermixing of aggressive boreal species within a southern forest during the early Wisconsin (Brown, 1938). Failure to distinguish chronologically separate fossiliferous deposits resulted in the conceptual “mixing” of northern and southern plant species which came from two distinct fluviatile terrace sequences. Terrace 2 is now believed to be a fluviatile and coastwise depositional terrace of Sangamon Interglacial age; deposits of terrace 2 contain a distinctly warm-temperate plant assemblage. Fluviatile terrace 1 dates from 12,740 ± 300 to 3457 ± 366 BP and is now considered to be related to late glacial and Holocene aggradation and lateral migration of the Mississippi River (the local base level for streams in the study area); basal portions of terrace 1 contain fossils of white spruce, tamarack, and many plant species today characteristic of the cool-temperate Mixed Mesophytic Forest Association. Terrace 1 fossil deposits occur in fluviatile terraces along tributary streams of the Mississippi River at elevations 15 to 30 m above the maximum recorded historic flood stage of the Mississippi River. The plant macrofossils represent remains of species that grew at or very near the site of deposition; they were not “rafted in” by floodwaters of the Mississippi River. We present quantitative data for plant macrofossils and pollen that support our hypothesis that at least local cooling along the Blufflands of Mississippi and Louisiana promoted southward migrations of mixed mesophytic forest species and certain boreal species along this major pathway during late Wisconsin continental glaciation.  相似文献

Comprehensive analysis of the data of high-precision seismoacoustic profiling, drilling and sampling of deposits using seabed corers, biostratigraphic studies, and radiocarbon age data was performed for the first time for Mangyshlak sediments in several bottom sites of the North Caspian. It was found that the Mangyshlak sediments comprise numerous linearly stretched depressions of 5–10 m in depth (morphologically similar to modern substeppe ilmen areas in the Volga River delta), which are covered by the Novocaspian sedimentary cover, and river incisions (among them the largest Volga River valley). In addition, the Mangyshlak sediments comprise the deltaic alluvial fans of different sizes along the shelf zone of the North Caspian. Analysis of mollusks and biogenic remains indicates that accumulation of the Mangyshlak sediments occurred in freshwater and slightly salty water environments under various hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions. According to radiocarbon dating of organic matter, the Mangyshlak sediments formed during sea regression in the range of 10-8 ka (isotopic age) or 11.5-8.5 ka (calendar age). Several types of sediments are distinguished: clayey-carbonate sediments, enriched with organic matter up to the formation of sapropel and peat, accumulated at the lowest sea level; weakly calcareous silty-clayey silts, formed during the subsequent intense filling of paleodepressions with terrigenous material. The features of the mineral composition of sediments are as follows: polymineral composition of clayey material with a high proportion of hydromica and disordered mixed-layered formations, a high content of minerals of the epidote group, amphiboles, and other accessory minerals. All of this indicates a genetic relationship between the Mangyshlak sediments and the Volga terrigenous material.  相似文献

Quartz sand grains obtained from a deeply gullied topography along the banks of two tributaries of River Pravara in Godavari Basin, Maharashtra have been examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to make the environmental interpretations of these deposits. The sediments reveal features resulting from mechanical grinding as well as from chemical alteration. Conchoidal fractures, cleavage planes, grooves, v-shaped indentations etc are the mechanical features documented on the grains whereas solution pits of varying sizes and intensity, precipitation surfaces, oriented v-pits, solution crevasses and etching are the features of diagenetic origin. Few sand grains show the evidence of wind transported sediments. Several evidence indicate that the samples have undergone digenetic changes. Few grains exhibit the features of intense chemical breakdown. The overall assemblages of the grain surface features suggest that the samples have been subjected to subaqueous transport for a considerable period of time. The chemical features such as etching, solution pits or semi circular arcuate steps that are found in abundance in these grains are due to the dissolution of the sediments in a low energy fluviatile environment, such as in floodplain region.  相似文献

In the El Minia district of northern Upper Egypt, the Pleistocene deposits of the Nile Valley include (?)Early Pleistocene conglomerates of the Armant Formation and (?)Middle Pleistocene sands of the Qena Formation. These sediments are exposed along both sides of the valley in terraces at different heights, unconformably overlying Eocene limestones. Field observations suggest that the conglomerate facies of the Armant Formation was deposited in proximal and mid-alluvial fans. The sands of the Qena Formation are differentiated into two facies: a cross-bedded sandstone, representative of alluvial fan—braided stream environments, and a facies of sand interbedded with mud that may have been deposited by a meandering river. The heavy minerals of the Armant Formation are markedly different from those of the Qena Formation, suggesting derivation from different sources. Surface textures of quartz grains from the Qena sands, observed by SEM, exhibit chemical features, attributed to a fluviatile origin. Sand from the Armant Formation is characterized by mechanical and chemical surface textural features that suggest original aeolian derivation followed by later fluvial sedimentation.  相似文献

文章通过对泸定大渡河上松林-大板厂地段T6阶地基座古堰塞坝崩塌-块体流堆积的识别,以及与其上游邻近地段甘海子T6阶地基座昔格达组崩塌、块体流堆积至湖相沉积序列的对比和成因联系分析,阐明了泸定昔格达组的堰塞湖成因。该区在晚新生代时,由于古大渡河岸坡的不稳定性,发生大型崩塌-块体流,堵塞河道,形成古堰塞坝和古堰塞湖,并在湖盆中充填了以海子坪昔格达组上部为代表的湖相沉积和少量的低能河流相沉积;同时,指出在对昔格达组大区域对比和综合研究中,特别是在分析它的地质意义时,必须考虑这种复杂性和非等时性。古堰塞坝和古堰塞湖应对地质灾害监测和水利工程建设有很好的启示。  相似文献

In this paper we present Quaternary stratigraphy of the area around Chennai based on archaeological findings on the ferricrete surface, geomorphological observations supplemented by radiocarbon dating. The coastal landscape around Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has preserved ferruginised boulder gravel deposits, ferricretes and fluvial deposits of varying thickness. The area studied is approximately 150 km east to west and 180 km north to south with a broad continental shelf towards the seaward. Several rivers enter the Bay of Bengal along its shores like the Koratallaiyar, Cooum and the Adyar. Precambrian charnockite and Upper Gondwana sandstone and shale bedrock rim the shelf margin. For the most part, the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene fluvial sediments overlie an erosion surface that has cut into older Pleistocene sediments and ferricrete surface. Incised valleys that cut into this erosion surface are up to 5–6 km wide and have a relief of at least 30 m. The largest valley is that cut by the Koratallaiyar River. Holocene sediments deposited in the incised valleys include fluvial gravels, early transgressive channel sands and floodplain silts. Older Pleistocene sediments are deposited before and during the 120-ka high stand (Marine isotope stage 5). They consist of ferricretes and ferricrete gravel formed in nearshore humid environments. Muddy and sandy clastic sediments dated to the ca. 5 ka highstand suggest that the climate was semi arid at this time with less fluvial transport. The coarsening up sequence indicates deposition by high intensity channel processes. Pedogenic mottled, clayey silt unit represents an important tectonic event when the channel was temporarily drained and sediment were sub aerially exposed. Uplift of the region has caused the local rivers to incise into the landscape, forming degradation terraces.  相似文献

三江一河(金沙江、怒江、澜沧江、红河是流经云南境内的4条主体水系,将上述4条河流河谷第四系的野外观察加以总结得出;金沙江河谷局部发育早一中更新世的湖相层和河湖相层,常形成晚期阶地的基座,晚更新世至全新世冲积层构成四级阶地;怒江河谷第四系发育较差,在六库的上游河谷中冲积层极不发育,只有局部地方有少量的河漫滩砂砾层(全新世),在六库至过街河段中,尤其是过街盆地,发育有中更新世至全新世的冲积层和洪积层,前者构成五级阶地,后者形成巨大的洪积扇分布在河流右岸的谷底或苍坡上;澜沧江除景洪、勐罕(橄榄坝)盆地外,其它河段主要为峡谷,第四系很少,在景洪盆地中发育有第二、第一级阶地和河漫滩冲积层;红河的第四系有中更新世至全新世的冲积层,并构成五级阶地。基于上述第四系特点,简要地讨论了这4条河流的形成时代。  相似文献

This article presents observations on the natural hazard potential for permanent and seasonal mountain settlements and infrastructure such as routeways and irrigation canals in the North-West Karakorum. The remote high mountain settlement Shimshal (3080 m), located in the upper Shimshal valley and surrounded by three potential natural glacier dams, is of particular interest. The permanent settlement of Shimshal and its seasonal pasture settlements in the Shimshal Pamir at heights of 3200 and 4600 m respectively, reach the upper limits for permanent and temporary settlement. The choice of location for settlement and agricultural activities is already dictated by relief conditions. Primary settlement areas are the sediment accumulations in the valley floors. The wide distribution of unconsolidated screes in particular prevents settlement expansion upwards along the valley slopes. Glacial outburst floods as well as seasonal flooding events further reduce the scanty settlement area, as well as being among the most devastating sources of danger. The production of debris and the supply of loose material deposits induced in connection with the glaciation history of the area becomes a permanent source of danger for human settlement through resedimentation in the form of rockfall or mudflow. Furthermore, canal systems essential for the survival of oasis settlements suffer annual destruction through mass movements on the slopes, induced by the glacially pre-formed relief. Thus the adaptation of settlement locations to a glacially formed mountain relief will be examined in this study, with particular reference to the geomorphological landscape situation. What makes the Shimshal settlement particularly interesting is its very isolated location at a distance of 80 km from the Hunza valley which contains the main settlement concentration of the North-West Karakorum. Traditional ways of life can be expected to be well protected from outside influences. In the North-West Karakorum we find a debris landscape which differs greatly in its development and distribution from that of the Himalayas, influenced particularly in the lower valley locations between 1000 and 3000 m by the different climatic situation, and where therefore in comparison with the Himalayas a completely different pattern of natural hazards arises.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a preliminary study of the heavy mineral (HM) potential of the northwest coast of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland that was funded by the Queensland Government's Future Resources Program Industry Priorities Initiative. The study found that the northwest coast may have the potential to host world-class HM deposits. All the essential ingredients in a HM mineral system are present: fertile source rocks, effective transport mechanisms and abundant potential trap sites, particularly along the well-preserved Pleistocene coast.

The source rocks are Proterozoic metamorphic and Paleozoic granitic rocks of the Coen Inlier and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Laura and Carpentaria basins, all of which crop out along the spine of the Peninsula. These rocks were exposed in the early Cenozoic and were vigorously eroded by seasonally active rivers throughout the Quaternary. Most of these rivers are currently carrying HM, and the zircon content in river sediments in the region is comparatively high. It is speculated that in the late Pleistocene HM delivered by rivers to the northwest coast were transported predominantly in a southwesterly direction, and trapped in the swash zone of prograding beaches. It is further speculated that at this time the coastline was deeply embayed with cliffs and headlands formed in bauxite, and that structural trap sites formed on the northeastern side of prominent headlands.

Pleistocene coastal sediments were partially reworked by Holocene coastal processes, and HM liberated by these processes may have been captured by prograding Holocene beach ridges. These Holocene beach ridges are not as extensive as the Pleistocene beach ridges but are more prominent, partly because they are less well vegetated. The Holocene coastline was probably more regular than the Pleistocene coastline, with fewer headlands to create structural traps. The modern coastline is relatively starved of river sediment because the Holocene and Pleistocene coastal sediments act as barriers to river flow.

It is recommended that ongoing exploration for HM in the region should focus on potential trap sites on the Pleistocene coast and that two sites, Vrilya Point and Jackson River, where structural traps may have been formed by coastal promontories, should be priority targets. It is also noted that if the exploration of Cape York Peninsula for HM deposits is to be effective, further research needs to be carried out into the geomorphological evolution of the west coast and, in particular, the role of cyclones in forming HM deposits in tropical climates.  相似文献

通过对国内外近100多年来山地蚀源区沉积类型的研究成果系统梳理,结合第四系现代沉积的野外考察,根据沉积物是否发生搬运、搬运机制、沉积位置、沉积部位的坡度以及地貌特征等,将山地蚀源区沉积类型划分为残积物、坡积物、坠(崩/塌)积物、山间河流沉积物、洪积物和冲积物等6种类型,各种类型在基本概念及其内涵上存在明显差异。残积物是母岩风化的产物在较平缓的地貌上(<3°)形成的原地堆积;坡积物是母岩风化后形成的产物在坡面流水或重力作用下沿着具有一定坡度(>3°,但一般不超过30°)的斜坡滑动或滚动至斜坡坡脚(即山麓)形成的堆积物;坠积物是仅在重力作用下以坠落或崩落或崩塌的方式沿着较陡峭的坡地(>30°)滑动或滚动至坡脚形成的沉积物;山区河流沉积物是残积物、坡积物和坠积物被坡面流水带到沟谷或山间河道中形成的沉积物;洪积物是洪水期山间洪流携带的大量母岩风化产物在出山口形成的沉积物;冲积物是平水期山间河流携带的大量母岩风化产物在出山口形成的沉积物。此外,山地蚀源区还存在滑坡、滑塌、泥石流等几种重力流沉积物。  相似文献

扬子准地台为大型克拉通碳酸盐发育的地区,从震旦系到中三叠统为典型盖层沉积,其中许多地层中不乏碳酸盐沉积。新中国建国以来,在其周边及其隆起边缘的碳酸盐地层中,陆续发现了许多层控铅锌矿床。近几年来,随着地质大调查的开展,又发现一批很有希望的铅锌矿化集中区。笔者总结了这些铅锌矿床的地质特征,并将这些矿床与国外的MVT矿床进行对比,探讨它们的矿质来源、成矿溶液、成矿机制和成矿控制因素等。  相似文献

This paper records the findings from c. 80 prehistoric sites that have been discovered in the alluvial deposits of the rivers Creuse, Cher, and Loir, tributaries of the middle Loire River, over the period since 1981. These deposits comprise river terrace aggradations formed during successive glacial–interglacial cycles which have recorded climate and environment during Quaternary time. The systematic dating of these river deposits by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) applied to optically bleached sedimentary quartz has resulted in the establishment of a chronological framework for the evolution of these rivers during Lower and Middle Pleistocene (between 1.7 Ma and 130 ka). Evidence for Early Palaeolithic (Mode 1) industries with an in situ context (workshops, soils) in the highest aggradations indicates that Hominins were present in the study area, near the geographical centre of France (47°N), around 1.1 Ma. Examination of the sites indicates that Human occupations were located along valley bottom sites during temperate episodes. Subsequently, after a gap of several hundred thousand years industries with handaxes appear in the Middle Loire Basin in the interval between 700 and 600 ka, and then continuously from 400 ka. These two phases of settlement produced industrial assemblages with clear differences in their responses to the supplies of raw materials and in the modes of making flakes.  相似文献

The Ganga Plain is one of the most densely populated regions of the world due to its fertile soil and availability of water. The rivers of this plain are the lifeline for millions of people of this vast alluvial plain. All rivers of this plain are characterized by narrow channel confined within wide valley. Continuously increasing pressure of population on this plain has led to the intensification of settlement even into the valley of the river. This unplanned expansion has enhanced the damage due to flooding during high-discharge period and lateral erosion during low-discharge period. Flooding and lateral erosion are identified as fluvial hazards in the Ghaghara River area. Extensive studies have been carried out on flooding, but not much attention has been paid to the phenomenon of lateral erosion. However, it has been observed that lateral erosion is an independent fluvial hazard that operates during low-discharge period. Low degree of compaction due to the presence of sandy and silty facies in the river valley deposits, mass movement, palaeocurrent pattern, and fractures initiates and enhances the lateral erosion. The present paper deals with the fluvial hazards in the Ghaghara River area.  相似文献

Sedimentary sequences within headwater valleys on the landward side of the Great Escarpment of South Africa are elucidated and their significance as indicators of environmental change is assessed. This study focuses on the Sneeuberg Range, the most prominent mountain range in the semi‐arid central Great Karoo. Valley fills of a hitherto unrecognised complexity and of a greater age than any previously recorded in the central Great Karoo are reported. Three phases of deposition spanning the Late Pleistocene up to the present are documented from sites where gully erosion has incised the valley fills. The earliest depositional phase is represented by deeply weathered, calcretised gravel deposits, which probably were emplaced by debris flow and fluvial processes in the form of a fan. These deposits subsequently were buried by finer grained, largely unconsolidated sediment, with much of this emplacement occurring during the Holocene. There is evidence for phases of landscape stability and instability within this facies. Finally, sheetwash has removed fine‐grained sediments from valley flanks and has deposited it either on valley bottoms, or in presently active gullies. This process appears to be ongoing, and is the subject of current investigation. The sedimentary deposits are interpreted as representing a wide range of palaeoenvironmental conditions that have prevailed within the central Great Karoo since the penultimate glaciation.
