We measured both mass-dependent isotope fractionation of δ88Sr (88Sr/86Sr) and radiogenic isotopic variation of Sr (87Sr/86Sr) for the Neoproterozoic Doushantuo Formation that deposited as a cap carbonate immediately above the Marinoan-related Nantuo Tillite. The δ88Sr and 87Sr/86Sr compositions showed three remarkable characteristics: (1) high radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values and gradual decrease in the 87Sr/86Sr ratios, (2) anomalously low δ88Sr values at the lower part cap carbonate, and (3) a clear correlation between 87Sr/86Sr and δ88Sr values. These isotopic signatures can be explained by assuming an extreme greenhouse condition after the Marinoan glaciation. Surface seawater, mixed with a large amount of freshwater from continental crusts with high 87Sr/86Sr and lighter δ88Sr ratios, was formed during the extreme global warming after the glacial event. High atmospheric CO2 content caused sudden precipitation of cap carbonate from the surface seawater with high 87Sr/86Sr and lighter δ88Sr ratios. Subsequently, the mixing of the underlying seawater, with unradiogenic Sr isotope compositions and normal δ88Sr ratios, probably caused gradual decrease of the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the seawater and deposition of carbonate with normal δ88Sr ratios. The combination of 87Sr/86Sr and δ88Sr isotope systematics gives us new insights on the surface evolution after the Snowball Earth.  相似文献

The mobility and dietary preferences of now‐extinct proboscideans have not been comprehensively examined in the central USA. We used stable carbon (δ13C), oxygen (δ18O) and strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isotopic signatures in molar enamel to investigate the foraging ecology of four mastodons (Mammut americanum) and eight mammoths (Mammuthus spp.) from southwestern Ohio and northwestern Kentucky. We tested two hypotheses: (i) these individuals were nomadic migrants that were passing through the region when they died; and (ii) mammoths and mastodons foraged in different environments. Unexpectedly, our results suggest that 11 of the 12 sampled individuals were regional residents. With the exception of one mastodon, 87Sr/86Sr ratios for proboscideans and regional water samples were statistically indistinguishable; slightly lower ratios for waters suggest glacial loess has an impact on modern samples. Amongst the individuals identified as residents, 87Sr/86Sr ratios indicate that mammoths and mastodons foraged in discrete geographical areas, and δ13C values imply dietary differences between the genera, which is consistent with our expectations. Oxygen isotope values may be able to distinguish animals that lived during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) from those that lived more recently. Three mammoths and one mastodon yielded δ18O values that are similar to modern regional precipitation and surface water, but too high for estimated drinking water during the LGM. We propose that these individuals lived during a relatively warm period following the LGM. Compellingly, the mammoth with the highest δ18O value also has the lowest δ13C value, suggesting that this individual was alive after regional vegetation shifted from open parkland to deciduous forest dominated by C3 species. Our results demonstrate that a wealth of information can be gleaned from fossil museum specimens and lay a foundation for future work on the foraging ecology of proboscideans and other extinct megafauna from the Midwest USA.  相似文献

The Precambrian/Cambrian (PC/C) boundary is one of the most important intervals for the evolution of life. However, the scarcity of well-preserved outcrops across the boundary leaves an obstacle in decoding surface environmental changes and patterns of biological evolution. In south China, strata through the PC/C boundary are almost continuously exposed and contain many fossils, suitable for study of environmental and biological change across the PC/C boundary. We undertook deep drilling at four sites in the Three Gorges area to obtain continuous and fresh samples without surface alteration and oxidation. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the fresh carbonate rocks, selected based on microscopic observation and geochemical signatures of Mn/Sr and Rb/Sr ratios, aluminum and silica contents, and δ13C and δ18O values, were measured with multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometric techniques. The chemostratigraphy of 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the drilled samples displays a smooth curve and a large positive anomaly just below the PC/C boundary between the upper part of Baimatuo Member of the Dengying Formation and the lower part of the Yanjiahe Formation. The combination of chemostratigraphies of δ13C and 87Sr/86Sr indicates that the 87Sr/86Sr excursions preceded the δ13C negative excursion, and suggests that global regression or formation of the Gondwana supercontinent, possibly together with a high atmospheric pCO2, caused biological depression.  相似文献

We investigate seasonal variations in the diet and drinking water of four Great Lakes mastodon (Mammut americanum) specimens using stable isotope analysis of serially sampled inner-enamel bioapatite structural carbonate (δ13Csc, δ18Osc), and previously published bulk analyses. Isotopic analyses and thin section measurements showed that mastodon tooth enamel extension rates (~ 12–4 mm/yr, decreasing toward the cervix) were lower than those of mammoths or modern elephants. Mastodons had distinct and highly regular seasonal variations in δ13Csc and δ18Osc, which we interpret in the context of local glacial history and vegetation changes. Seasonal variations in δ18O were large but variations in δ13C were small, and may have been obscured if coarser sampling methods than our inner-enamel sampling approach were used. Thus, our approach may be particularly useful for understanding relatively small seasonal changes in δ13C within C3 environments. The seasonal patterns, though not entirely conclusive, suggest that the Ontario mastodons did not migrate over very long distances. Rather, the climate and seasonal dietary patterns of mastodons within the region changed over time, from ~ 12,400 to 10,400 14C yr BP (~ 15,000 – 12,000 cal yr BP). Insights gained using these methods can contribute to a better understanding of megafaunal extinctions and Paleoamerican lifeways.  相似文献

A 4-yr study of spatial and temporal variability in the geochemistry of vadose groundwaters from caves within the Edwards aquifer region of central Texas offers new insights into controls on vadose groundwater evolution, the relationship between vadose and phreatic groundwaters, and the fundamental influence of soil composition on groundwater geochemistry. Variations in Sr isotopes and trace elements (Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios) of dripwaters and soils from different caves, as well as phreatic groundwaters, provide the potential to distinguish between local variability and regional processes controlling fluid geochemistry, and a framework for understanding the links between climatic and hydrologic processes. The Sr isotope compositions of vadose cave dripwaters (mean 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7087) and phreatic groundwaters (mean 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7079) generally fall between values for host carbonates (mean 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7076) and exchangeable Sr in overlying soils (mean 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7088). Dripwaters have lower Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios, and higher 87Sr/86Sr values than phreatic groundwaters. Dripwater 87Sr/86Sr values also inversely correlate with both Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios. Mass-balance modeling combined with these geochemical relationships suggest that variations in fluid compositions are predominantly controlled by groundwater residence times, and water-rock interaction with overlying soils and host aquifer carbonate rocks. Consistent differences in dripwater geochemistry (i.e., 87Sr/86Sr, Mg/Ca, and Sr/Ca) between individual caves are similar to compositional differences in soils above the caves. While these differences appear to exert significant control on local fluid evolution, geochemical and isotopic variations suggest that the controlling processes are regionally extensive. Temporal variations in 87Sr/86Sr values and Mg/Ca ratios of dripwaters from some sites over the 4-yr interval correspond with changes in both aquifer and climatic parameters. These results have important implications for the interpretation of trace element and isotopic variations in speleothems as paleoclimate records, as well as the understanding of controls on water chemistry for both present-day and ancient carbonate aquifers.  相似文献

The 87Sr/86Sr ratios for a series of ultramafic rocks from the Lake Chatuge region range from 0.7023 to 0.7047, suggesting a direct upper mantle source and precluding a multiple differentiation origin for these alpine-type rocks. Higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7058–0.7068) for serpentinized rocks from this suite apparently reflect the influx of radiogenic 87Sr from the surrounding gneisses and schists during serpentinization.  相似文献

Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, major and trace element compositions have been determined for the Paleogene granitic rocks in the Tsukuba district, Japan. Isotopic ages strongly suggest that the granitic rocks (seven units) were continuously emplaced and solidified during a short time interval. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios for seven granitic units vary from 0.7082 to 0.7132, while sedimentary and metasedimentary country rocks have ratios at the time of granitic magma emplacement ranging from 0.7149 to 0.7298. Continuous linear arrays for the granitic rocks in the diagrams of initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios versus some chemical parameters can be explained by either of following two processes. One is the assimilation — fractional crystallization (AFC) process between the parental magma (SiO2 of 68% and initial ratio of 0.7078) and sedimentary country rocks, and the other is magma mixing process between above parental magma and sediment derived acidic magma (melt) (SiO2 of 75%). The high initial ratios (0.7078–0.7098) for basic rocks such as gabbro or diorite in the Tsukuba district and the similar characteristics observed in the rocks of Ryoke belt (SW Japan) suggest that the parental magma had the same source region as the basic rocks, probably the lower crustal source.  相似文献

The internal fluid circulation of the Tahiti barrier reef has been studied with Sr isotopes and pore water chemistry. The study is based on 15 sample series recovered over 2 years from a 150-m deep core drilled through the entire barrier reef down to the volcanic basement.Temperature data suggest that the interstitial fluids originate from seawater that penetrated the volcanic basement to at least 200 m depth on the ocean-sided slope below the barrier reef. Subsequently, the fluids migrated upward driven by buoyancy through the entire reef.Chemical evolution of the interstitial fluids is mainly controlled by basalt–seawater interaction and by admixture of seawater from the open ocean during upward migration. These processes are monitored with 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios, H4SiO4 concentrations and alkalinity to give a picture of the evolution of interstitial fluid flow over 2 years. The results indicate that the internal circulation patterns change through time. The modifications concern mainly the residence time of the fluids within the volcanics and the intensity and localization of lateral seawater admixture within the karstified Pleistocene reef.  相似文献

The Nd and Sr isotopic ratios on a suite of continental alkali basalts from Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica, define a change in the source over the range of K/Ar dates between 1 and 28 m.y. ago. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios (0.7026 to 0.7031) are unusually low for continental alkali basalts, although the corresponding 143Nd/144Nd ratios (0.51283 to 0.51299) are similar to previously reported values. On a 87Sr/86Sr vs. 143Nd/144Nd diagram, they define a trend on the low 87Sr/86Sr side of the “mantle array”, which has a slope steeper than the mantle array. An explanation for the light rare earth elements (LREE) enrichment of the alkali basalts, with high 143Nd/144Nd ratios and low 87Sr/86Sr ratios, is suggested by a model which modifies the source region with a mantle-derived, CO2-enriched metasomatic fluid.  相似文献

We present in this study results obtained with a laser-ablation coupled with both a quadrupole and a multi-collector ICPMS. The simultaneous in situ Sr/Ca and 87Sr/86Sr measurements along growth profiles in enamel allows the concomitant diet and migration patterns in mammals to be reconstructed. Aliquots of the powdered international standard NIST “SRM1400 Bone Ash” with certified Sr and Ca contents, was sintered at high pressure and temperature and was adopted as the reference material for external reproducibility and calibration of the results. A total of 145 coupled elemental and isotopic measurements of herbivores enamel from the Kruger National Park, South Africa, gives intra-tooth Sr/Ca and 87Sr/86Sr variations that are well larger than external reproducibility. Sr/Ca profiles systematically decrease from the dentine-enamel junction to the outer enamel whereas 87Sr/86Sr profiles exhibit variable patterns. Using a simple geometric model of hypsodont teeth growth, we demonstrate that a continuous recording of the 87Sr/86Sr variations can be reconstructed in the tooth length axis. This suggests that the mobility of a mammal can be reconstructed over a period of more than a year with a resolution of a ten of days, by sampling enamel along growth profiles. Our geometric model of hypsodont teeth growth predicts that an optimal distance between two successive profiles is equal to the enamel thickness. However, this model does not apply to the Sr/Ca signal which is likely to be altered during the enamel maturation stage due to differential maturation processes along enamel thickness. Here, the observed constant decreases of the Sr/Ca ratios in the ungulates of Kruger National Park suggests that they did not changed of diet, while some of them were migrating.  相似文献

The Nandong Underground River System (NURS) is located in a typical karst area dominated by agriculture in SE Yunnan Province, China. Groundwater plays an important role in the social and economical development in the area. The effects of human activities (agriculture and sewage effluents) on the Sr isotope geochemistry were investigated in the NURS. Seventy-two representative groundwater samples, which were collected from different aquifers (calcite and dolomite), under varying land-use types, both in summer and winter, showed significant spatial differences and slight seasonal variations in Sr concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. Agricultural fertilizers and sewage effluents significantly modified the natural 87Sr/86Sr ratios signature of groundwater that was otherwise dominated by water-rock interaction. Three major sources of Sr could be distinguished by 87Sr/86Sr ratios and Sr concentrations in karst groundwater. Two sources of Sr are the Triassic calcite and dolomite aquifers, where waters have low Sr concentrations (0.1-0.2 mg/L) and low 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7075-0.7080 and 0.7080-0.7100, respectively); the third source is anthropogenic Sr from agricultural fertilizers and sewage effluents with waters affected having radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7080-0.8352 for agricultural fertilizers and 0.7080-0.7200 for sewage effluents, respectively), with higher Sr concentrations (0.24-0.51 mg/L). Due to the overlapping 87Sr/86Sr ratios, it is difficult to distinguish the sources of Sr in groundwater samples contaminated by agricultural fertilizers or sewage effluents based only on their 87Sr/86Sr ratios. However, 87Sr/86Sr ratios do provide key information for natural and anthropogenic sources in karst groundwater.  相似文献

Thirty-one selected volcanic rocks from the Myoko volcano group which comprises a volcanic chain of four independent volcanoes of Quaternary to Recent age are analyzed for 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The rocks of the lizuna volcano, the oldest among the Myoko volcano group, have higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios and show a larger scatter ranging from 0.70437 to 0.70556 than those of other volcanoes. The Kurohime volcanic rocks have a restricted range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70403∼0.70435). 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the Myoko volcanic rocks are almost the same in average to those of the Kurohime volcanic rocks, although somewhat varied ranging from 0.70378 to 0.70461. A single analysis of the Yakeyama volcanic rock yielded a 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70427. A characteristic pattern in 87Sr/86Sr ratios is observed through the volcanic activity of the Myoko volcano group; 87Sr/86Sr ratios are high in the early stage of the volcanic activity and then decrease to low values, the late eruptives being characterized by constant 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The negative correlation between 87Sr/86Sr and Rb/Sr, and positive correlation between 87Sr/86Sr and Sr found in the rocks of the Iizuna volcano are interpreted to show the occurrence of contamination by materials with high 87Sr/86Sr ratios (>0.7056), low Rb/Sr ratios (<0.01) and high Sr contents (>300 ppm). Sialic crustal contamination may have played only a minor role.  相似文献

Sixty-four Rb-Sr and two K-Ar isotopic measurements from seven ring complexes in central Nigeria provide evidence for a systematic age trend along a 200 km zone ranging from 174±5 m.y. in the north to 154±4 m.y. in the south. A peak of anorogenic magmatism occurred in the Jos Plateau region about 164±4 m.y. ago. Although a small syenitetrachyte complex at Zaranda, near Bauchi, gives an age of 190±15 m.y., unpublished ages of 290–330 m.y. for the southern Niger ring complexes confirm the existence of an overall southerly decreasing age trend in the Niger-Nigeria province of West Africa. Isotopic measurements on two small, oversaturated syenite intrusions at Zaranda and Pankshin suggest that syenitic liquids had initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7048—not significantly different from the mantle range of values, but that related peralkaline silicic variants from the same complexes are depleted in total Sr and have higher 87Sr/86Sr initial ratios characteristic of the earth's crust. This variation of initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios in syenite-related granitic liquids of the peralkaline spectrum has also been noted at the Shere Hills, near Jos, and at Liruei, near Kano, and may be representative for all syenite-granite occurrences in the Nigerian Younger Granite province. Such isotopic variations in the initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio may be attributed to “crustal enrichment” of syenitic liquids whose source lies in the mantle. Coarse-grained, peraluminous biotite granites have consistently low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the range 0.706–0.709 (similar to the ca. 600 m.y. Pan-African granites of the basement), and may represent further modifications of originally syenitic liquids in the crust, or the granites may have originated from an independent source within a “dioritio” lower crust. Although the magmatic trends show small variations in the initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio, much higher initial ratios are recorded in granites which have been modified within their roof zone by deuteric (autometamorphic) and/or metasomatic processes.  相似文献

Strontium isotope compositions of ancient sulphate deposits not only provide chemostratigraphic information but also offer insight into the system in which the evaporites precipitated. Primary gypsum from two Middle Miocene (Badenian) sections in southern Poland shows steadily higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios than those expected from a marine‐derived formation. The ratios are interpreted as the result of increasing inflow into the basin at the time of gypsum precipitation. Palaeogeographic reconstructions suggest that riverine runoff sources were situated in the West and East European platforms (to the north and east, respectively) and the Carpathians (to the south), which are mostly composed of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; their dissolution cannot be responsible for the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios recorded. We conclude that Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic igneous and supracrustal rocks of the Ukrainian Shield were the source of the higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios recorded in the Badenian primary gypsum. A distinctive decreasing trend of 87Sr/86Sr ratios from western Ukraine to southern Poland is explained by a consistent direction of brine inflow during gypsum crystallization (typical cyclonic circulation controlled by the Coriolis effect).  相似文献

The vertical distribution of atmospheric 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in soil is compared to the distribution of recent atmospheric 90Sr deposition. 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of soil leachates are correlated with 90Sr activities. Samples from the uppermost part of a soil profile have low 87Sr/86Sr ratios and high 90Sr activities. Samples from the deeper part of the soil profile, however, have high 87Sr/86Sr but low 90Sr activities. This points to mixing between an atmospheric and a geogenic component. Mixing calculations indicate that 50–80% of the Sr in the topsoil of a small catchment in the Vosges mountains is of atmospheric origin. Similarly 87Sr/86Sr of roots point to the presence of an atmospheric and geogenic component. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of soil leachates and corresponding roots are very similar indicating, that the roots integrate at each level of the soil profile the leachable Sr of the corresponding soil.  相似文献

Rare earth element (REE) distributions and 87Sr/86Sr ratios were determined for nodule crusts and associated surface sediments collected in the southeastern Pacific Ocean between South America and the Tuamotu archipelago. The shale-normalized patterns of the REE from the surface sediments show pronounced negative anomalies in Ce which indicate a marine origin. One 87Sr/86Sr ratio also has a value characteristic for seawater strontium. REE patterns from the nodule crusts, when normalized to shales, seawater or associated surface sediment, show that a marine origin can also be proposed for the oxy-hydroxides. Only the Ce shows a systematic scatter, which could be the result of fluctuations in the oxidation-reduction conditions during nodule growth. The marine origin for REE is corroborated by the 87Sr/86Sr ratios which average 0 · 70905 ± 0 · 00019 (2σ), a value close to the seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0·70910 ± 0 · 00035. If the major metals of the polymetallic nodules have the same origin as these trace elements, then a direct precipitation from seawater can be postulated for the crusts studied here.  相似文献

The unaltered magmatic rocks of the Zadoi Massif were analyzed for Sr isotopic composition and concentrations of major oxides and trace elements by ICP MS. The evolution of the massif involved four phases: (i) perovskite and ilmenite clinopyroxenites, (ii) ijolites, (iii) nepheline syenites, and (iv) carbonatites. The perovskite clinopyroxenites have anomalously high Ce/Pb (223–1132) and Pr/Sr × 1000 (70–360) ratios at a low initial Sr isotopic ratio (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.70247–0.70285. The ilmenite clinopyroxenites have Ce/Pb and Pr/Sr × 1000 ratios approaching those in basalts of oceanic islands (OIB) (decreasing to 39 and 30, respectively) at a simultaneous increase in the (87Sr/86Sr)0 ratios (0.7030–0.7036). The ijolites and nepheline syenites have patterns of incompatible trace elements similar to those in OIB and the highest (87Sr/86Sr)0 ratios (0.70346–0.70414). The carbonatites are complementarily enriched in incompatible elements of the nepheline syenites and have (87Sr/86Sr)0 = 0.7029–0.7034, which is comparable with the range of analogous ratios for the ilmenite clinopyroxenites. Our geochemical data indicate that the carbonatites were formed as an immiscible liquid or fluid, which separated from the ijolite-nepheline syenite melt during its interaction with the source material of the perovskite and ilmenite clinopyroxenites.  相似文献

An Early Permian volcanic assemblage is well exposed in the central-western part of the Apuseni Mountains (Romania). The rocks are represented by rhyolites, basalts and subordinate andesites suggesting a bimodal volcanic activity that is intimately associated with a post-orogenic (Variscan) syn-sedimentary intra-basinal continental molasse sequences. The mafic and mafic-intermediate rocks belong to sub-alkaline tholeiitic series were separated in three groups (I–III) showing a high Th and Pb abundances, depletion in Nb, Ta and Sr, and slightly enriched in LREE patterns (LaN/YbN = 1.4–4.4). Isotopically, the rocks of Group I have the initial ratios 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.709351–0.707112, 143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.512490–0.512588 and high positive ?Nd270 values from 3.9 to 5.80; the rocks of Group II present for the initial ratios values 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.709434–0.710092, 143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.512231–0.512210 and for ?Nd270 the negative values from −1.17 to −1.56; the rocks of Group III display for the initial ratios the values 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.710751–0.709448, 143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.512347–0.512411 and for ?Nd270 the positive values from 1.64 to 2.35. The rocks resembling continental tholeiites, suggest a mantle origin and were further affected by fractionation and crustal contamination. In addition, the REE geochemistry (1 > SmN/YbN < 2.5; 0.9 > LaN/SmN < 2.5) suggests that these rocks were generated by high percentage partial melting of a metasomatized mantle in the garnet peridotite facies. The felsic rocks are enriched in Cs, Rb Th and U and depleted in Nb, Ta, Sr, Eu, and Ti. The REE fractionation patterns show a strong negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.23–0.40). The felsic rocks show the initial ratios the values: 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.704096–0.707805, 143Nd/144Nd(i) = 0.512012–0.512021 and for ?Nd270 the negative values from −5.27 to −5.44. They suggest to be generated within the lower crust during the emplacement of mantle-derived magmas that provided necessary heat to crustal partial melting.  相似文献
